Heyyy everyone!
I love reading books but never seem to have a bookmark. I can actually remember the page numbers where I stop reading and have no problem going back to the correct page, but bookmarks are fun!
And though it's a very simple one, I made a bookmark for myself with my absolute favourite phrases from the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard!

The Butler
Chapter 1: The Card Game
Rating: T for teen
Summary: Butler begins his weekly card game with his associates when one of them demands the story of his name should he lose.
Playing cards shuffled between hands, slid across tables. Small round coins clicked into place. Butler passed the last card to each of the men sitting around him, his claws pulling the cards he wanted in close and up his sleeve. Sometimes the only way to win at cards was to cheat at cards.
Andre cursed under his breath as his skeletal fingers flipped over the double of hearts Butler had replaced the Queen he would have been dealt with. His hand was now abysmal.
And Butler was glad it was. It gave him a fighting chance. He held in the devilish smile that curved across his muzzle. He couldn’t give up the game now.
“I fold,” Andre muttered, placing his hands on the table. “Guess tonight’s not my night.”
“There will be other nights,” Butler said, snapping his cards down. “I’m in.”
The Tarling brothers across the way glanced between their large, clawed hands. They had a habit of sharing their cards, and goading each other on. Butler knew it would never be allowed at another game table, but he didn’t care. Not his circus, not his monkeys.
It made it all the easier to cheat them.
“We’re in,” The Tarlings said, decidedly as one. Butler knew they had yet to realize they couldn’t mix and match from each other’s hands.
“And I’m sorry but I’ve got to fold,” disgusting wet Toby said.
Across the way, Eskender Ryber chewed his lip with his stupid square teeth. His gaze flicked to Butler. “You know,” He drawled slow and infuriating, “I’m in, but with a catch.”
His pale hands, knuckles bruised pink, pushed another clinking pile of coin to the middle. Butler threw a few more coins in the pile too. Fair was fair.
“And what, pray tell, is your catch, Ryber?” Butler said, his claws drumming pointedly on the table wood.
“You tell us why you’re named Butler,” Eskender said. One of his ugly twig eyebrows arched.
Andre’s skull spun on the column of his spine. He stared Butler in the eyes. “You know, I’d like to hear that too.”
The Tarling brothers made an agreement, and disgusting wet Toby licked his eyeball which was basically a yes. Butler’s claws drummed. He had no intention of telling these people anything. Saying anything was dangerous. He owed them nothing.
“Fine,” he said. “I’ll accept your catch, Ryber.”
There was no way he was going to lose. He knew exactly what cards he had dealt Ryber, and his own were better. He had made certain to keep his own hand royal. With a little cheating, he would take the cash and tell no one his secrets, and no one would be the wiser.
Dagda and Fachta Tarling, to the left of the dealer, threw their hands down as was their right. As Butler had engineered, Dagda’s hand was three of hearts, seven of clubs, five of clubs, a four of spades, and a eight of diamonds. Fachta’s hand held a two of diamonds, a nine of clubs, a three of spades, a six of diamonds, and a lonely little seven of hearts.
“We have pairs!” they cried in unison.
“Once again, gentleman, this is not a doubles game,” Butler drawled. “You can’t play from each other’s hand.”
The brother’s face fell. They looked between each other, round cheeks and four mouths falling into blood red frowns. Poor babies.
Eksender placed his cards down. “Read them and weep, Butler.”
A royal flush, of the heart variety. It seemed Butler wasn’t the only one cheating. He was annoyed that someone else was onto his game.
“Well, we seem to be at a standstill,” Butler said as he placed his cards down. “Royal flush, clubs.”
They were tied. For now. With two cheaters in the house, Butler figured he had better get his story straight.

Okay, okay, okay, I wanna contribute to this thing about Witchshadow.
I REALLLLLLY liked this book. I liked just as much as much as Bloodwitch actually. Anyway, besides the point.
I keep on seeing people saying that they didn’t like Witchshadow as much as the other Witchlands books but I just… don’t get it. This book was fucking amazing imo. Iseult’s whole thing where she didn’t know what to do anymore because she was just so fucking done with holding back her weaverwitchery made sense to me. I get so tired of seeing people in fantasy books hold back their big bad power and when they do finally let it loose and wreak havoc over everyone, suddenly their the villain and that’s just sounds like the author got tired to write their character. BUT with Susan Dennard… it’s a whole different story. She actually wrote Iseult and decided fuck it, let’s make this woman go through shit. Manipulate her, destroy this fucking woman, make her suffer and in the end, she’s still a good person. AND THAT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD TO SEE. Now, I do get it with Aeduan. I do get why people didn’t like the whole thing he went through with the Paladin possessing him and that whole shit but I’m just a sucker for this trope that Susan did. It’s so interesting and it may just be me.
Vaness and Vivia’s POV felt somewhat kinda boring… Vivia isn’t that fun to read about. I’ve felt the same about her since I first read these books when I was thirteen. Vivia is just meh. I really want to see Vaness’s POV tho. That woman is so cool.
Safi’s situation is another one of my favorite tropes. I’ve noticed this trope is sometimes there in epic fantasy series. During the second to the last or last book in the series, the main character or side main character always ends up being held captive. I like this trope. Makes the characters go through shit and it’s just nice to see. I also like that we got nuance with Hendrick’s character yet he’s still a pathetic little worm.
Stix and Ryber were one of my favorite POV’s besides Iseult and Safi. I want the best for Stix and she goddamn better get it.
Anyway, people say this book was mostly just a Hellbard book more than an Iseult book but I strongly disagree. We may have gotten more world building on the Hellbards but it’s still Iseult’s book. Most of the character building is on Iseult and most of the book surrounds Iseult. At the end of the book, everything is about Iseult.
This whole book was supposed to be two books and I fucking hate Tor Teen for making Susan Dennard have to put it into one book while also being pregnant and going through postpartum depression. Susan is so cool through and this book was so cool and I just love this series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for Witchshadow

The witchlands ships and who they could not fool in a fake dating au/who would be like oh fucking finally
Safik: They can’t fool Iseult because she can literally see the pining and it drives her nuts. Kullen calls bs too because he knows Merik too well. They can get around everyone else.
Baesult: Everyone is firmly in the oh fucking finally camp. The pining is obvious and Safi is very happy she won the bet.
Vix: Fucking finally. I refuse to believe that no one knows how Vivia feels about Stix. The palace staff were very excited to see their princess finally have her woman.
Rylen: Merik refuses to believe Kullen actually pulled it together to ask Ryber out. He is happy to be proven wrong when Kullen confesses for real.
V^2: They’re too awkward to make anyone think they worked it out on their own. No one is fooled.
Laden: Fucking finally. Lev and Zander throw a party in celebration.
I think that’s all of the ships. Let me know if I forgot any!

Do we need to read Sightwitch to understand Bloodwitch? I understand that some scenes were put in place because of Sightwitch but I wanted to know if we NEEDED to read it
Look, while I did definitely did my best to write knowing not everyone would read Sightwitch, the fact is that you won’t catch any of the Big Plot Reveals if you haven’t read book 2.5. Like, you won’t realize…
Who Aeduan’s mom really is
Who Aeduan’s dad really is
Who that old “crow” with Safi is
What the Rook King is
What the Paladins actually are
What the mountain is
What “sleeping ice” means…
And a ton more. So, while I truly did my best, the fact is that much of the Big Plot Reveals are FOR READERS ONLY.
In other words, our main cast of characters also don’t know any of this stuff yet…But Ryber does, which means readers of Sightwitch do too.
So I hope you’ll check out the book. I’m really proud of it. It’s different and integral to the broader tale of the Witchlands. :)
