Do you like Vivia x Vaness?

I do like Vivia x Vaness!  However, I’m not fully committed to them becoming a couple in future books.

One of the things I value the most from The Witchlands is its strong female friendships.  No matter where the story is at, no matter how the romance is progressing, nothing ever overshadows Safi and Iseult’s relationship.  Even when they’re apart.  That’s… a rarity in popular YA writing.  It’s really frustrating that I can rattle off 10+ romantic relationships that I love, but struggle to come up with as many friendships that stuck with me after reading something.  That isn’t to say there aren’t great female friendships in other books or series.  But I’m talking about strong female friendships that the story unequivocally revolves around, where they are the central theme.  The Witchlands is god-tier in that regard.  Really I should be arguing that the best thing about The Witchlands is its friendships in general because everything I’m saying applies just as much to Merik and Kullen as it does to Safi and Iseult.  Kullen is, above all else, at the forefront of Merik’s mind.

I think Susan Dennard works harder than most popular YA authors to give readers strong female friendships, so while I wouldn’t be upset if something blossomed between Vivia and Vaness, ultimately, I think a romance would deviate from the theme of the series.  These two people need a friend more than anything.  Not a friend they have a crush on.  Not a captor turned tentative friend.  I mean a tried and true organically cultivated friend.  Stix and Safi are undeniably important to Vivia and Vaness, but there’s so much doubt clouding those relationships right now - whether it’s imagined or not.  I think both of these women have what the other one needs and I would like to see them find support in one another.

I think Vaness and Stix could get rid of the high council in a day between the Iron Bitch Glare (tm) and the Sotar shit eating grin (tm). The chaos potential for them is golden.

The chaos is, of course, caused in Vivia’s defense.

Okay so. Witcheries aren't hereditary. So. concept. Vaness' great aunt's wife happens to be an ironwitch too, but not as powerful obviously, and they can bond over it
