How does working In tv work with everyone in separate places?

So the show I work on permanently is a political roundtable show discussing the week’s events (not like, talking heads fighting all the time, usually it’s like ‘here’s what republicans feel about this event, here’s what the democrats feel, here are statehouse reporters offering neutral takes’, pretty chill usually).

I was a camera op on the show in the studio (technically still am studio lead), but the graphics director and line producer had other work to do at a pharmaceutical company (they have in-house media teams) and he’s STILL there because of all the stuff they’re doing internationally to help develop COVID treatments and tests.

How it works is that in the control room (a large glass-wall room like what you see on TV) are only 3 people: The Audio guy (and I bought a curtain for the audio booth to help dampen noise a while back from talkative producers, so it’s fairly insulated now), me about 15-20 feet away at the producer’s station with the graphics keyboard pulled over, and the director at the front of the room like 20 feet from me (there is a hard wall separating the audio booth from his back, so he and Audio are safe from one another).

In the studio is one camera op (the other 2 shots are locked). The host sits at a desk with an earpiece in connected to me and a single camera operator standing about 30 feet away from him. Behind the set wall is our TEAMS Coordinator.

Usually the guests sit around a big desk to talk about the events (I say ‘guests’, but most of them have been ‘guests’ every episode for 25 years minus days when they’re ill, so I just call them ‘hosts’ usually). During COVID, we’re keeping them at home and they dial in via a TEAMS chatroom (or Skype or Zoom if we’re having issues with TEAMS that day). The TEAMS coordinator monitors the room and once the show starts pretty much has nothing to do unless there’s an issue.

Tape (the people who record the show) is always their own private room because they roll the packages during the show so they need to be able to talk as they need (they = gender neutral pronoun, not plural. It’s one person).

During the show itself I communicate with the person who does captioning (we use a California company and pipe them a private signal for the show), time the show for the director, and give separate time cues to the host so he can pace packages. I also make the call to drop packages if we’re running long (we rarely get all 6 in, but the 6th is always a throwaway, it’s more of an emergency bumper if they get through the 5 topics too fast).

After the show is done we upload the raw audio file to a private server where the radio engineers can access it and turn it around to air live on radio about 60-45 minutes after we finish shooting.

So it’s really easy to do our shows actually. Everyone connects via their computer and then we just have the host relay messages before we start like “center your shot, don’t leave too much space above your head”, stuff like that :)

I am first alternate on another weekly show we do that is business themed (so I fill in for teleprompter, studio cameras, or audio if any of those people can’t make it, which I’ll be doing this week actually). For that one things are a bit more complex, but we have 2 studios. So if we have to have another person on camera beside the host and they won’t just skype in, we can throw them in an entirely separate room.

The lead producer for the political show described trying to adapt to all of this during COVID “Redesigning the aircraft while in flight”, but we’ve come out the other side and have figured most of the issues out :)

it is SO GORGEOUS 😭💞💞💞 i debated a bit before getting it because i have...so little room for more albums HAHAHA but i’m really glad i did, all the pics are so pretty 😭💞 AND YEAHHHH LAN BROTHERS CARDS! I would have also loved Sizhui or Wuxian-Booping-Noses-With-A-Bun (who doesn’t want that tbh) cards, but i’m so happy with Xichen and Wangji ;~~~; and like?? the odds?? of getting the brothers TOGETHER?? what LUCK omg. i usually have very rotten luck when it comes to photocards, so THANK YOU CQL ALBUM FOR BEING NICE TO ME 💘 i looked through the whole thing before flipping over the cards to see who i got and i just sorta gasped out “BROTHERSSSS” immediately, i was so pleased 😂😅

I actually don’t have a drivers license so I never took one myself but the last time I was in a car for a long time was.. two years ago when my brother, cousins and I drove to a concert! if 2 hours already count as a long drive?? i don’t travel around much tbh
