here is a moodboard I made based on the fact that I feel like there should be more water themeing in padmé’s costumes
naboo is a world with a water core, with an amphibious indigenous species, and actual sea monsters! padmé deserves to dress like a sea queen!

Woke up with a fanfic idea. Fighting the urge to start writing it bc I have too many WIPs already. Would much rather just read that story. Not sure if anyone's done it tho. Anyways. Anyone know of any Star Wars AUs where Padme is never Queen/Senator, but is just always a handmaiden? Like a roleswap AU with Sabe or something along those lines. I have a mighty need lmao
Making a new post bc I want it to show up in tags lmao
Anyways.
After a non-exhaustive search of AO3 I could not find any fic with this AU, so being the absolute clown I am, I had to write the story and pick up another WIP.
I wrote over 7k this afternoon and damnit I'm gonna share something (it got a little long, so most of it's below a cut)
Have some Handmaiden Padme Naberrie to Queen Sabe Amidala Roleswap AU!
There was a long argument when they were forced to land on Tatooine. Sabé wanted to go with the Jedi, see what life was like on this Outer Rim planet. Panaka absolutely refused. He would not let the Queen go wandering around unsupervised on a Hutt planet, even if the Jedi was also with her. Too much could happen, too much could go wrong. The Jedi wanted to go into the city alone anyway, he was used to this kind of work and negotiation. When Padmé volunteered to go in the Queen’s place, Panaka agreed reluctantly, knowing that even if he said no, his orders would be ignored anyway.
He'd rather know which handmaiden was where than have the girls pull the decoy routine behind his back.
So Padmé got to accompany the Jedi into town, observe his negotiation for the necessary parts to get them on their way to Coruscant, met a funny little boy who dreamed of visiting every star, saw first-hand the harsh realities of life outside of the Republic.
But she also saw the love and kindness, the hope carried by people who had no reason to be hopeful other than the fact that it was all they had.
And after.
After appealing to the Senate, after realizing there was nothing that could be done except with their own hands, after forging alliances, exposing their decoy routine, taking back their own castle, battles, liberations, aftermath and healing and two long terms serving as the Queen’s bodyguard, double, and closest confidant, Padmé realized she didn’t know what to do with her future now.
Eighteen years old and facing a mid-life crisis.
Who was she, if she wasn’t Sabé’s handmaiden?
Sabé could still use her, still had need for close bodyguards, but the life of a Senator was less fraught than the life of a Queen, and Royal Handmaidens were no longer needed. Senators didn’t need decoys (they all assumed).
Padmé had some ideas, had some plans, but she was uncertain of their viability. Even still, with Sabé’s blessing she went back to Tatooine to search for the woman who had opened her home to strangers and sent her precious, gifted son off to become a Jedi.
Slavery was a scourge, and Padmé might not be able to end the practice single-handedly, but she still might be able to make a difference to some people.
She found Shmi Skywalker, recently freed, newly married to the man who had fallen in love with her and bought her freedom. Once again, Padmé was welcomed into Shmi’s home with little question. Padmé met Shmi’s husband, a farmer named Cliegg, and her stepson, a fourteen-year-old named Owen. After much careful questioning and a late-night conversation at the kitchen table over cups of tea, Padmé learned that Shmi was exactly where she wanted to be, and a knot of worry that Shmi had traded one kind of slavery for another loosened.
Shmi asked about Anakin, wondering if the handmaiden had heard anything about her boy since she last saw him. Padmé could only relay stories of Anakin’s bravery during the battle of Naboo, how he was instrumental in saving her planet, how he had been accepted by the Jedi Order. Beyond that, she knew nothing. She’d almost forgotten about the boy, and she wondered how his Jedi training was going. Maybe, she would ask Sabé to inquire, out of professional curiosity.
“I still want to help,” Padmé told Shmi. “I want to help other slaves. I know I can’t fix everything, but…”
“One person can make a world of difference to slaves,” Shmi concluded knowingly.
And she directed Padmé to the Whitesun family. They had been working for generations to get what slaves they could off Tatooine and into freedom. They could always use more help, people with ships and Republic credentials.
So Padmé became a freedom runner, smuggling workers, families, children, babies sometimes alone and parentless, into the sanctuary of the Republic. It was not easy work, or safe, it wasn’t steady either. Some years she only got a handful of people to freedom. But she did the work, assimilating into Tatooine under a false name, establishing herself there, making a network through the seedy underbelly of the galaxy. Sometimes it served to have friends in low places just as much as it did to have friends in high places. She made a difference. She changed lives for the better.
Sometimes she returned to Coruscant, when Sabé needed her, when things became dangerous and the Senator from Naboo needed a decoy once again. Padmé would always return when Sabé asked. She would have followed the Queen’s orders to her own death as a child, and as an adult, her resolve was only stronger.
They were twenty-four when the most serious threat in a long time reached Sabé’s ears and Padmé was called back into service. The galaxy was humming with threats of war and Sabé, ever the staunch pacifist, was ruffling feathers once again as old enemies moved in to oppose her. It was dangerous to be Sabé Amidala, so Padmé Naberrie stepped in, never far from her side.
When Cordé was killed, they realized the threat was closer than ever before, and additional reinforcements were called in at the behest of Chancellor Palpatine.
Padmé was not the only one surprised to see a familiar Jedi enter the Senator’s apartments, nor was she the only one to look up (and up) at who she last knew to be a little boy of nine years old. My had little Ani grown up over the years. Shmi would be proud.
There was some argument between Sabé and Padmé and the Jedi about the best way to protect the Senator, but eventually Anakin and Obi-Wan bowed to the expertise of the handmaiden who had been protecting the Senator for over a decade now. After all, the Jedi were there as additional security, not to completely rewrite all of the Senator’s security protocols. Padmé had already given them a thorough look and patched any cracks she found.
They had shared rooms, even shared beds before in the past, but time and maturity and distance had changed their relationship some, and when Sabé retired for the night, she didn’t want anyone, even Padmé standing over her in the dark. She never agreed to the security cameras the Jedi suggested, and Padmé knew she wouldn’t have, but she did agree to letting R2-D2 stand as sentry. Padmé and the Jedi would be just a moment away as they stood watch throughout the night.
After helping Sabé with her highly routine, as they had done a thousand times before, Padmé entered the sitting room to find the Jedi in the middle of an argument – or perhaps a lecture, judging by Anakin’s prickly mood and Obi-Wan’s mildly scolding tone. She’d overheard some things while she lingered in the hallway – ‘I’ve thought about her every day.’ ‘Be mindful of your feelings. We are here to do a job.’ – and she knew that they were talking about her. Anakin’s interest in her was obvious, his eyes never left her when they were in the same room.
His crush was… not entirely unwelcome, he would not be the first man to look at Padmé and fall head over heels, but it was uncomfortable. They’d been apart for so long and they both had a job to do. Sabé’s safety was most important, not whatever romance may or may not bloom between them.
The three sentinels settled in to wait out the long night. They traded small talk, sipped strong caf, inquired about how things had been over the past ten years.

Undercover Queen [ 2021 ]
My annual Star Wars day aka May the 4th picture I made back in 2021. Seems just like yesterday I was working on this. Not the worst digital painting I’ve done not the best either lol. But I still wanted to share my favorite Queen and her badass handmaiden bodyguard!

Favorite au you’ve made?
Damn this was hard to answer because I love all my AUs, but I would have to say Cannibal Ursa AU, I had a lot of fun making it up and talking about it with my friends. But a close second would definitely be either Twin Azula and Zuko AU and ATLA in LOK Setting (it’s a long story) AU, because in both of those AUs Azula and Zuko have a more complex relationship which I always find fun to write (or at least think of writing). Thanks for the ask anon!
