Donnie Mikey Raph April
Splinter is drowning. He can hear his son’s grunts and hurt as the Kraang beat him. He’s killing him. Splinter can only listen while April wraps her arm around him.
“Splints,” she says. “Splinter, I know. I know.”
He has lost his son. Gone in the blink of an eye, like his mother. Splinter is bundling his robe into his paws, crying freely.
The sky is a perfect blue, almost like Leonardo’s mask and Splinter continues to cry.
If Splinter had left their dynamic alone—if he didn’t mess anything else up—his son would still be here. If Raphael as still in charge he wouldn’t have let Leonardo do that. He’d order him to stay, he’d… he’d…
Or maybe Raphael would be in the same place as Leo. Maybe Splinter would have lost his oldest, or even lost all four of them.
But he hasn’t lost all four of them. He’s lost one, but oh god does it feel like he lost everything. The world is so, so quiet—Splinter realizes. It’s too quiet.
Leonardo was the last one to speak. Everyone else was babbling away and learning things, but not Leonardo. Splinter nearly tore out his hair trying to get him to say something—anything—but Leonardo wouldn’t. Donatello would always translate though, and would always tell Splinter that this was normal. Leo just didn’t want to talk yet, but he will.
And when he finally did, Splinter remembers just how everything fell into place. Leonardo spoke like he’d never stop, always cracking jokes and quips and Michelangelo followed him like he’d hung the moon—and Splinter knew they’d be okay.
But now? Crying his eyes out with April next to him and mourning the loss of his son, Splinter knows it won’t be okay. The world is quiet without Leonardo, and Splinter knows he will never feel at peace again.
And his sons. Raphael who tried to get him not to, Donatello who is Leonardo’s twin through and through, and Michelangelo who is the only person to make Leonardo laugh even when his anger gets the better of him.
Splinter has to be strong for them. April won’t tell them, he knows. But he needs a few more minutes to mourn, to grieve, and then he will stand up and find his remaining sons, and he will be strong for them.
But for now Splinter cries for a world that is too quiet, and knows that he’ll never see Leonardo again.
Except for his memories.
