yandere!zhongli who is basically him fighting his erosion, his mind slowly deteriorating as his consciousness shifts back and forth between his mortal identity and his younger, ruthless self.

he rarely dreams, if not ever, and yet now he's plagued with nightmares of all the souls he reaped in the past, moments of when his friends lost their lives, and the sight of you and your gruesome death - over and over and over again, in thousands of ways, each new vision worse than the last.

he wakes and internally panics when your arms aren't around him, when he can't feel your warmth or presence nearby. though in the end, he finds you pouring a glass of water for yourself in the kitchen, for once, your smile fails to ease his corroded heart.

he's a lot more silent, now, which is worrying. no longer does he talk about the beautiful sceneries of liyue - in his head, he sees the devastating scene of the battlefield of the archon war, of the blood staining his spear, and the bloodlust of the other gods.

he does not comment when you tell him about your day anymore - mind ringing, screaming, spiraling, alarm bells clamoring like a loud battle horn amidst the warzones when you remark about how someone was kind enough to give out flowers today on the street.

he fails to register the fact that they haven't just given it to you, but to everyone who passes by. all he heard was someone giving you a gift, you seem happy about it, and that won't do at all. someone is threatening his position, sniffing around his territory, eyeing his most treasured possession, and he does not appreciate it. the only way they'll manage to touch even just one strand of your hair is when liyue harbor has burnt down to ashes, when your soul has left your body, when he will surely follow right after to join you in celestia.

he doesn't seem happy when you confront him about how he has forgotten your birthday this year - he always had this bittersweet smile as he congratulated you whenever this occasion comes around... but for some reason, this year, the dark look that consumes his usually warm amber eyes strikes a chilling sensation in your chest.

he's silent as he steps forward steadily, eerily stoic with his eyes seemingly staring through you, despite your soft pleas and calls of his name. he corners you between his arms and the wall of what's supposed to be the safest place you could be - were those geo markings along his limbs always this dim? and was it your imagination or did it occasionally flicker to abyss black?

talking with a friend the other day gave me ideas....

sulky hubbies being ignored in favor of their own (representative animals/chibi) plushies.

zhongli hiding the rex lapis plushie under the mattress with murder™️ in his eyes (idea: crack short comic series where he regularly 'fights' with said plushie, titled: "how to dispose of your rival dragon")

human al haitham silently seething across the coffee table with his book being stuck on page 67 for the past hour as i read one of his favorite books outloud to the plushie al haitham while cradling it close to my chest. "haha are you mad because someone took your favorite pillo-" "where's the rent this month, kaveh?" ".... 🖕"

imagine the physiological mindfuck you could explore with this. one could even claim essentially akin to a curse, and for the super devoted ones like zhongli, i imagine it would hit so much harder. what do you mean his steadfast devotion was an illusion all along? what do you mean the fact that he can't get fully angry and not resorting to bury you ten thousand feet under is because he was cursed with this very predicament? why would you do this?

and then maybe you feel so bad that one day you just decide to use up all your power to erase this core trait from all lifeforms walking upon teyvat. due to the sheer scale of the action, i'd imagine it wouldn't be a stretch to result in your death. or at the very minimum a coma of sorts. (cliche i know but imagine the mental stress of it all for a moment. personally i'd go insane from the combination of guilt, impostor syndrome, doubting my self-worth 24/7, and paranoia. but if your mental fortitude can handle it then congrats ig)

a 'happy ending' alternative would be for your favorite to wake up the next day and realize what you've done... and yet instead of being glad that they were freed from the 'curse', all they felt was dread. they rush towards your side, fall onto their knees, and cradle your hand, their own ones shaking terribly.

they find themselves loving you, still.

for them, it was never a curse.

thinking about mundane daily things with zhongli...

zhongli absentmindedly giving you back scratches when you feel that itch but your arm can't reach that specific spot.

holding back zhongli's hair when he eats and he forgot his hair clip.

brushing your teeth in the morning with zhongli, side-by-side, your free hands holding onto each other.

zhongli randomly passing by a rather beautiful wildflower on his stroll and he proceeds to pick it up so he can slip it behind your ear when he meets you.

honestly i'm probably gaslighting myself and there may be lores/texts that disproves this, but the fact that zhongli and neuvillette has so many parallels, how zhongli is avoiding neuvillette constantly, how zhongli isn't given the spotlight on the literal year of the dragon, and hyv's tendencies to fuck around and drop 'misleading' hints (i.e. we're made to believe that zhongli is avoiding neuvillette because the latter wants to 'judge' him in that voiceline).... it all makes me feel like they're doing all of it because don't want to expose zhongli as the geo dragon sovereign.

listen. i say they don't want to expose zhongli's dragon form up close in detail for too long in-game because they know we'll catch onto something. and wouldn't it be crazy if this is yet another parallel, but in reverse? wherein neuvillette had only half of his power but gained it completely after he received the gnosis, while zhongli had his full power from the start and then later it's 'taken away' because he chose to give the gnosis to tsaritsa? plus, if the tsaritsa is planning to do anything with the gnosis ー for example, destroying it in the process of using it to overthrow heavenly principles/celestia, in any case the power will return to him anyway. like, come on. man has lived for 6k+ years. he's mischievous behind that elegant facade. it's a win win situation for him either way. man is gonna say 'get bamboozled bitches' at the end of the game i just know it /j /silly

today the plot bunnies are repeatedly kicking my poor brain about zhongli x adeptus!reader who has been with him since his rex lapis era....

.... except it's been thousands of years and neither of you has confessed yet and your adepti friends are constantly pestering you to GO GET MARRIED ALREADY YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER WHAT KIND OF PINING LASTS FOR MORE THAN A MILLENIA HELLO???????? they know rex lapis is a patient man but really this is ridiculous

they proceed to not-so-subtly coerce the traveler to help you two hook up. the quest lasts for five hours (you could say it's an archon quest in itself.................. haha get it? /bonked)

or alternatively,

zhongli x adeptus!reader who were once a loyal follower of rex lapis who died in battle at the archon war. thousands of years later, you get reincarnated as a mortal living in the now flourishing liyue harbor with your memories intact. inevitably, you manage to meet him again, but this time as zhongli. and naturally, you recognize the god who you used to devote your entire life's purpose to. but you decide to hide this fact because you don't want him to recognize who you actually are, believing that now that he has cast aside his title, he wants to move on from the painful memories associated with the archon war behind him.

little do you know that he does recognize your soul. yet he also hides the fact that he's rex lapis and refrains from telling you about the past, because he didn't think you would want to remember all the bloodshed that happened. besides, he always wished that you would treat him equally, not as a god you have to serve and put on a high pedestal. as zhongli, he just wants to become your mortal lover who dotes on you, pampers you senseless, and eventually grows old together with you.

tldr: you actually know each other's identity but pretend you don't and the ones who know the truth of the situation are facepalming so hard.

madam ping is so tempted to shift onto her former form to drop-kick the both of you, maybe then you'll regain your senses...
