riff lorton x shy!reader hc's
nav. | m.list
requested by @luckyrabbits - hi! if requests are open, can i request something (fic or hcs are alright!) w riff lorton and a fem / gn reader who’s very shy? ty and have a great day!
word count: 500
a/n: sorry this took so long to make! and as a shy person myself, i totally loved this prompt lol. hope you like this 💗
pairing(s): riff lorton x fem!reader
Tumblr media
riff first sees you when he stops by at doc’s. you’re working alongside tony and laughing at something he’s saying to you, one hand coming up a little self-consciously to cover your smile
riff melts on the spot
he bothers tony for next few days, trying to convince him to introduce the two of you
tony first says no, he knows you aren’t too comfortable around strangers
but riff manages to wear him down eventually
you’re a little scared when you first talk to him, and you’re really thankful that tony and riff manage to carry the conversation on their own with little input from you
but over time, talking to riff gets a little easier
until the mf starts flirting with you
my god, you get so flustered
riff’s a pretty smooth guy, with lots of confidence, he knows what he’s doing
you’re the exact opposite
the first time riff calls you “girly girl”, you get so flustered, you have to walk away to the staff room
he always keeps himself in check though
yes, he loves making you blush, but he never wants to actually make you uncomfortable, so he stays within his limits
he takes you out on multiple dates, usually in secluded places
originally, he did this so you’d feel better, but he ends up liking it more himself, it’s quality time with you AND he’s the sole receiver of all your attention
this isn’t always the case though
sometimes you insist on going dancing because you know all the jets are
and riff loves it too, but he won’t go without you
so you try and bear with it as much as you can
you’re too shy to dance in the hall with all the people milling about you though, so you encourage riff to dance with grazie and the other girls
and even if he does, he always manages to find his way back to you
will probably drag you out of the hall to dance in the parking lot
the music is muted, he sings along to it as he sways you around before pulling you into a kiss
you melt against him, knees unsteady, thankful for the arm he secures around your waist to keep you standing
riff’s also great at extracting you from social situations you don’t want to be in
all you have to do is tug on his sleeve once, and he’ll offer the people around you a pleasant smile and believable excuse before whisking you away
he’s usually the one to initiate physical touch, but on the rare occasions that you do?? fucking dead
just imagine, dragging him down by the collar of his shirt to kiss you?? out of absolutely nowhere?
he always makes the most surprised gasp, too
it fuels your ego, gives you the very necessary confidence boost that you need
riff kind of tends to keep the jets away from you, they’re a really loud and often rude gang
he knows you don’t need to be a part of a crowd like that, so the only jets you properly know are riff and tony
all in all, he’s a great boyfriend, and he finds your shyness endearing instead of annoying
it’s just one of the many things he’s loves about you :)

Death Wish
“happy rumble day, Y/N,” riff said excitedly as he came out of Y/N’s small bedroom and into the kitchen where Y/N was preparing breakfast in the middle of the afternoon.
“you know i’m not a fan of this, riff.”
she kept her back to him, and he came up behind her and wrapped his arms around the tops of her shoulders.
Y/N was the complete opposite of riff. she wasn’t even sure how she fell in love with him in the first place. they had opposing views, as she was constantly promoting peace between the two gangs in the city. but, they did have something in common. Y/N was outspoken, and brave, and stood up for herself. she was a good girl who liked bad guys, because bad guys brought out a fiery personality in her. and riff fit that definition perfectly.
riff squeezed Y/N’s body a little tighter. “come on girly, you know me. i’m going to be safe. those sharks can’t lay a finger on me,” he said quietly, kissing the back of her head before stepping away.
“i know you, you can hold your own. that’s not what i’m against. i don’t like the idea of this rumble in general,” she stated.
riff’s calm demeanor was growing into an impatient one. “it’s necessary. this is our turf, and no one gets to come into this city and steal what we worked so hard to build.”
Y/N noticed a complete switch in his tone. he went from being sweet to being sharp all in a matter of seconds. she turned around to find riff’s cold eyes fixated on her own.
she walked closer to him, and he looked down at her. “the sharks can’t steal land that was already previously stolen.”
riff frowned, his accent getting thicker with every word. “we were here first.”
“were you?” Y/N replied sassily.
riff’s playful side smile came back once more. “why are we arguing? i love you, and you love me, and you’re making me breakfast,” he said, wrapping his arms around her waist. Y/N couldn’t help but fall into his trance. “we can agree to disagree.”
she rolled her eyes. “fine. that’s not going to stop me from trying to prevent this though.”
“i know it won’t.”
Y/N went back to her spot at the stove and continued to cook the meal. she finished it up, and split it into two for both her and riff. they sat down together at the small table, awkward silence thick between them.
“what time do you have to go tonight?” she asked, breaking the silence.
“it starts at midnight in the salt shed,” he replied.
“are you worried?” Y/N questioned quietly.
riff shook his head. “no. the sharks can’t do anything to me and my boys. we have the upper hand.”
she knew it was better to stay quiet than fight riff again, so she silently nodded her head and continued to eat. eventually, they finished eating and they cleaned up their messes.
“i’m going to go out, gotta see my boys before the big night,” riff said, smiling to himself. he stepped closer to her. “i’ll see you tonight, right?”
Y/N nodded. “yeah, i’ll meet you before you go to the shed,” she said back, her voice almost monotone.
riff rested his hands on her hips. “good,” he replied before placing a loving kiss on her lips. “see you later.”
he excitedly ran out the door, and Y/N watched as her one love walked out of her apartment to go make the most stupid decision he’s made yet. which, considering the amount of dumb decisions he’s made, truly says something.
she didn’t have the greatest feeling about tonight. maybe that was just because she was prone to excessive worrying. regardless, something didn’t feel right about what riff was doing. she tried her hardest to ignore the gut feeling that was making it’s presence known.
Y/N tried to keep herself occupied for the rest of the afternoon. her anxious thoughts kept her from going anywhere, so she decided to release her crowded thoughts into deep cleaning the entire apartment. it was long overdue, and she figured keeping busy would help calm her racing mind. by the time she had completed her task, it was nearing six o’clock. she decided to go out and meet riff at his jets group spot in the city.
she took a walk in the cool summer air as the sun began to fall behind the skyline. she arrived at the spot, and her quiet footsteps alerted baby john.
“riff, you’ve got a visitor,” he stated, causing the rest of the jets to flick their eyes to whoever it may be.
riff rounded a corner, and Y/N took notice of his appearance. he looked like he was ready for war in his vest covering his cream colored shirt, and his icy eyes widened when he saw her. she wondered why riff was so surprised, until she glanced down and saw a gun in his hand. he quickly slid his hand behind his back to hide it.
“Y/N, what are you doing here?” he asked almost frantically, stepping closer to her. every few steps he made, she would take a step back.
“riff, why the hell do you have a gun?” she asked, her voice cracking. “what do you think you’re going to do with it?”
“it’s just a precaution, darling,” he reassured, trying to calm her down. she shook her head. “the sharks are bringing heat, so i gotta bring heat.”
“oh yeah? and what happens if you get hurt? you and your boys are going to shoot them? what if they take your gun and shoot you?”
“that’s not going to happen, Y/N, i know what i’m doing,” riff said back, dropping the gun and finally approaching Y/N. he held her shoulders tightly.
“please riff, don’t do this,” she said in response, her eyes brimming with tears.
riff sighed. he considered it, but eventually removed his hands. “i’m going to bring it, but i won’t use it. okay?”
Y/N wasn’t happy with that either, but she nodded nonetheless. she felt a little bit better knowing riff wouldn’t be using it.
riff kissed her forehead. “the boys and i are goin’ out soon. i’ll see you when the rumble is over, yeah?”
“yeah. i love you,” she said quietly, resting her head on riff’s chest. his calm heartbeat immediately relaxed her. he wrapped his arms around her shoulders.
“i love you too, girly. it’ll be over before we know it.”
Y/N left, not sure what to do with herself in the meantime. she decided that since she wanted to be awake when riff came home, she would take a short nap back at her apartment. she walked home without a sound, and immediately went to her bedroom and went to sleep.
before she knew it, her body shot up out of bed and she checked the clock on the wall, which read 11:30. she paced around the room a little bit, and came to the conclusion that she couldn’t wait at the apartment for riff to come home; she had to see him.
Y/N threw on a sweater and hurriedly walked out the door, running down the streets to the salt shed. she kept a close eye on her watch, knowing that the rumble would start at midnight.
as she approached the shed, she heard the familiar sounds of footsteps down the pavement, and she spun around a building to hide from the jets. she held her breath as she watched the boys prepare for war and wait outside the shed. riff didn’t look like the sweet boy she knew and loved, he seemed almost animalistic.
then, right as her watch showed her that it was midnight, the boys walked in, and she knew the sharks had arrived. Y/N made her way closer to the shed when she knew the coast was clear, but on her way, a figure ran past her vision.
she tilted her head, and ran closer. that’s when she saw anybodys trying to get into the shed.
“anybodys!” she whisper yelled, catching their attention.
“Y/N, what are you doin’ here?” anybodys asked, catching the closing shed door.
Y/N ran up to the door. “i’m here for riff.”
Y/N always liked anybodys. she knew riff and the rest of the jets wouldn’t let anybodys in the gang, and quite frankly, they treated him like garbage. if Y/N caught this behavior, she would try her best to put a stop to it. anybodys was a great friend to her.
“it ain’t safe for you here!” anybodys whisper yelled back.
“i gotta be here, i wouldn’t be able to live with myself if i wasn’t.”
anybodys finally gave in, and together they slid under the door and gently closed it, hiding together behind a pile of salt. not long later, the door began to make noises from the outside, as if someone was trying to get in.
Y/N and anybodys sunk further down, until tony and chino slid their way under the door as well. she knew tony didn’t want the rumble to happen just as much as she did.
her eyes then stayed fixated on riff. Y/N could see from a mile away the reckless abandonment that was ever present in riff’s demeanor. he was prepared for anything.
“why are they talking so much?” Y/N asked to herself quietly. then, she watched as riff slid tony his gun. at least he was keeping his word.
they all talked more and more, and tony shared some words with bernardo. she couldn’t make out what was being said.
then, bernardo sent a punch to tony. Y/N gasped, and covered her mouth. tony didn’t fight back. bernardo flung his fists repeatedly at tony as the sharks and jets simultaneously yelled.
tony quietly said something to bernardo, and a full out brawl started between the boys.
“i can’t watch,” Y/N whispered, not being able to pry her eyes off the sight in front of her.
tony pinned bernardo and sent punches as the boys roared. then, as bernardo was nearing a blackout, he stopped. Y/N knew tony didn’t want to fight. he stood up and saw the outcome of what he was doing.
Y/N looked away for a split second, and when she turned around, bernardo and riff had knives in their hands and were eyeing each other.
“oh dear god,” she whispered. her face went pale as she watched riff.
she could tell riff didn’t want to do this anymore. there was fear in his eyes that wasn’t there before. bernardo and riff were afraid of each other.
they swung around the knives like it was choreographed. tony caught riff, leaving his back open for attack from bernardo. Y/N felt like yelling to tony to let him go. riff struggled to get out of his grasp.
then, he freed himself and turned around right into bernardo’s knife, which impaled him in his upper leg.
Y/N screamed. she didn’t care if she was caught at this point. she heard anybodys exclaim her name, but her world went silent. she came out behind the salt pile when she saw riff fall to the ground. tony took the knife and in return stabbed bernardo.
Y/N gasped again and took a step back. the room froze, confused as to what had happened. in a matter of seconds, two rival gang leaders lay injured on the ground, one being sprawled out dead.
Y/N ran into the action, and her footsteps alerted the group. their shock didn’t last long, for red and blue lights began to shine in through the windows.
the boys scattered, and tony backed away slowly, realizing what he had done.
“Y/N! tony! we have to go, now!” anybodys yelled trying to stop Y/N.
she ran to riff’s side and bent down next to him. he was still alive, but losing a lot of blood.
“Y/N… w-why are you here?” riff asked quietly.
“don’t talk about me, i’m here to help you, okay? we’re going to get you out of here.” she rested her hand on his cheek, and riff gently held her wrist.
“i can’t walk. you can’t get me out of here yourself. besides…” he took a deep breath in. “you’ve got company coming. you need to go now, Y/N.”
she began to cry. “i’m not leaving you riff,” she looked up to see anybodys ushering tony out.
“anybodys, tony! help me get riff out of here!”
tony left, and anybodys hesitated before running to riff’s side to help Y/N.
“Y/N, don’t do this. you’ll be caught,” he said again.
“you’re an idiot if you think i’m going to leave you here to die,” she fired back. she took off her socks and quickly tied them into a makeshift tourniquet to wrap around his leg. the pair stood him up on his good leg and he wrapped his arms around Y/N and anybodys’ shoulders, and together they hobbled out of the shed just in the nick of time.
anybodys and Y/N guided him into an alley not far from the shed, but far enough to stay out of the eyes of the police. they laid him down against the wall as he faded in and out of consciousness. “stay with me riff, please!” Y/N said as anybodys sent her a look. “thank you anybodys, i owe you one. i can take it from here,” she said hurriedly. anybodys nodded before running off to find tony.
“i’m going to fix you up, okay?” she told him frantically. luckily, she brought her purse which contained gauze, alcohol, and tape.
“y-you’re not a nurse,” riff said quietly.
“i know i’m not, but i’m not going to leave you alone to die. i can’t.”
she used the tourniquet around his leg to dab up the blood after untying it, and then she took the alcohol out of her purse and poured it over the wound. riff grimaced and squeezed Y/N’s arm tight.
she finished it off by wrapping it in gauze tightly and taping it down. “this won’t last you long, you need stitches.”
“we gotta wait until the heat dies down, Y/N. they’ll know this is from the rumble,” he pleaded.
“riff, we can’t wait any longer. that gauze can only hold you off for so long. i know the people that work the emergency room, they know i don’t get involved with the rumbles. it wouldn’t make sense for me to even be at the rumble. trust me, i know what i’m doing. they won’t know a thing.”
riff rolled his eyes, complying with the plan. Y/N helped him stand, and they hobbled a few blocks away to the nearest emergency room.
they walked in, and immediately the nurses took action. they took riff back and got to work on fixing his wound. Y/N knew them, for her mom actually used to work with these ladies in the same emergency room.
“how did this happen?” one of them asked, writing on a clipboard. riff looked to Y/N for an answer.
“um…he was getting ready for the big rumble tonight. when him and one of his gang members were practicing, he accidentally jabbed him in the leg before the rumble even began,” Y/N said, hoping the excuse was good enough. “riff just now decided to tell me.”
“he wasn’t at the rumble?” the nurse asked. Y/N shook her head.
“looks like your buddy got you pretty deep there. Y/N did everything right though to take care of you,” one said to riff, peeling away the soaked gauze to unveil the wound.
“we’re going to go get the equipment we need to fix him up,” another said before all of them piled out of the room.
“i don’t want to get stitches,” riff said as Y/N pulled over a seat next to him.
“you would have died, riff. it’s kind of a miracle you’re still here. the stitches are going to save your life.”
“what if i didn’t want to be saved?” riff said loudly, causing Y/N to be taken aback.
“what?” she questioned.
riff avoided eye contact. “why do you think i wanted you to leave me there? my death wish was obvious to everyone but you, Y/N. i kept it from you because of this exact reason. i always knew the outcome of today, i was supposed to die.”
tears formed in Y/N’s eyes. “riff, i-”
“what do i have to live for? tony’s no longer a jet, i’m losin’ my territory, you deserve better than me, so what do i have?”
Y/N took riff’s hand. “you have me. i don’t need anything better.”
riff finally made eye contact with her. he squeezed her hand back, and tears formed in his eyes as well. “you’ve been there for me more than anyone else, and here i am treatin’ you like shit.”
“i don’t care, riff. i’ll always love you regardless of anything. i love you more than you’ll ever know. i couldn’t bear to lose you today.”
riff smiled and rested his hand on Y/N’s cheek. “i don’t deserve you.”
the nurses came back in and gave him pain medications while also numbing the area around and in his wound to prepare to stitch it up.
“i’m scared, Y/N,” he said quietly. she went to the free side of the bed and took his hand.
the nurses quickly stitched him up, and riff pressed his eyes closed the entire time. he held on to Y/N’s hand tightly.
“all done!” the nurse said, stepping away from the bed. “we’ll keep you here for a while longer to monitor you and make sure everything is okay, but you should be able to leave later tonight.”
they thanked the nurses and Y/N and riff were left alone again.
“thank you for not giving up on me,” riff said, admiration in his eyes.
“i would never.”

Cool Your Jets- Ch. 3: Let’s Dance (Riff x newcomer)
Tumblr media
I finish cleaning up my sad attempts to make dinner and then go to freshen up when I hear a knock on the door.
“Riff, if that’s you I’m gonna rip your arms off-!” I hiss as I yank the door open, only to find a dark blue swing dress with a note attached to it.
Marilyn,
Anita made this for you! She wants you to show those Jets who’s boss! See you at the dance!
Maria :)
A smile grows on my face as I take the gorgeous blue dress inside. There’s a dotted pattern on the skirt and low-cut bodice, and like my other new dress it’s very flowy. I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to repay Anita for this! I slip it on with a tulle petticoat and twirl in front-a the tiny bathroom mirror. After some makeup and a halfway-decent hairstyling I think I’m ready, and I almost feel too dressed up. Back in the country, simply wear’n a dress with no mud spots on it was fancy enough, but I know city folks got higher standards.
As I head out I remember that I’ve got no clue where this place is, so I decide to go with my intuition and follow a group-a dressed up Puerto Ricans to a school. I wish I could go to school, but since I gotta pay rent there’s no use try’n to squeeze in time.
Inside I can already hear blare’n swing music and the sound-a lots-a people talk’n and laugh’n. I stick to the wall and scope the gym out, noticing that the Sharks and Jets have divided the room.
“Marilyn!”Maria rushes up, dressed in white, and engulfs me in a hug. “You came! And you look wonderful!”
“Of course she does!” Anita walks up, she herself wear’n a black and red dress.
“I must admit, amor- this it definitely the best dress you’ve made.” Bernardo smirks. “Sorry about earlier, chica. I think we got off on the wrong foot.”
I wave it off. “Nah, it’s fine. I’m new here same as you, more water under the bridge. I haven’t been to a dance in months, so let’s dance!”
We group together and walk onto the dance floor, and I notice that Anita and Bernardo take no regard for the line separating the Sharks and Jets. I feel awkward just stand’n here by myself, so I just stay off to the side.
“Hey! Ya made it!”
Mouthpiece runs up with a big smile on his face. “How’re ya supposed to dance when you’re tucked away in the corner? Come dance!” He takes my hand and starts lead’n me to the center-a the room.
“Uh I donno, Mouthpiece. Everybody here’s dancing so intense, and back home we’ve never had social events like this-”
“Just relax! Have fun!” Mouthpiece jerks my arm and sends me falling towards the floor, only to scoop me back up and twirl me around.
“Aw- oh- Oh my God!” I cry as he lifts me up. “What are you doing?!”
“I’m dancing with a pretty goil!” He grins as he twirls me again.
I chuckle sarcastically. “You’re too kind, Mouth!”
“That your new nickname for me?”
“No, it’s just that you can sometimes have a big mouth.”
“Aw!” He dramatically clutches his chest. “I’m scarred beyond repair!”
“Get over it!” I playfully push him and he takes me in for anodda dip.
“I’ll take over from here.”
We both turn and see Riff standing next to us with an amused smirk on his face.
“Jeez, boss. We just got started,” Mouthpiece whines.
“I’m sure Velma wants a fella to dance with,” Riff waves him off. Mouthpiece leaves after giving me a quick look of apology. Now Riff turns to me and offers a hand.
I put my hands on my hips. “Why on Earth would I dance with you after that? Mouthpiece invited me to a nice dance, and now you come here all high-and-mighty try’n to cut in!”
“I just wanna get to know the new goil in town. C’mon, ya won’t regret it!” He winks.
Cautiously, I look around and spot Grazi with anodda Jet.
“Won’t your goil get jealous?”
Riff follows my gaze. “Grazi? Nah, Diesel’s keep’n her company. Right now I’m all yours.”
I give him one more skeptical look, then roll my eyes in defeat. “Fine.”
He takes my waist, a lot more snug than Mouthpiece I might add, and starts waltz’n us all over the room.
“Took a while to find ya! You been look’n for me?”
“When I came I expected to find the leader of a stubborn gang.” I shrug.
He laughs. “Oh really?”
I give a devious smirk. “I’ve been trying to find him, but all I can see is a cleaned-up Jet boy.”
“Ey! Get away from her!” Bernardo comes up and shoves Riff away from me.
“You got a problem, amigo?” The Jets leader pushes Bernardo and they both start circle’n each odda.
“Guys, just stop it!” I try to break them up but it’s no use.
“She’s with us, punk!”
“That’s funny ‘cause last I checked she was meet’n with us!”
“Guys!!” I get in-between them and they seem to remember I’m still there. “I’m here for everyone! Can you guys just go ten minutes without fighting?”
“Hey, hey, hey! Everybody please calm down!” A chaperone comes up to stand in the middle of the Jets and Sharks mob. “There are beautiful goils here that wanna dance, can’t we all just get along?” He goes to talk more about social rules, but then-
“There you are!” Anita comes over and yanks me over towards Maria on the sidelines. “What are you doing? I suggest you stay with Maria and Chino until this mess gets settled.”
Maria huffs. “Anita! We want to dance!”
Anita shakes her head as she heads back to dance with Bernardo. “You can, away from the Jets!”
I sulk in the corner as a massive dance-fight takes place: Sharks vs Jets.
“¡Oye, Javi! Ponle fuego, ¡vamos!” Anita shouts.
Maria and Chino eventually join in, but me being alone leaves me awkwardly pacing back and forth.
“Mambo!”
“Mambo!”
“Go!”
As I watch the dance break out, I can’t help but be a little bit jealous of Riff ‘nd Grazi. She looks like she’s having so much fun, but Riff seems… distracted. He keeps look’n at Bernardo, and Bernardo keeps look’n at Riff. I gotta say- he ain’t a sight for sore eyes. I can understand why Grazi keeps him so close, and can’t help but feel sad that I don’t got no fella to call my own.
I make my way to the back, but then Riff seems to recognize someone next to me. He leads Grazi over, leaving me to stiffly loiter around and stare at the ground.
“Tony! Ya made it! I knew you’d come!” Riff beams with joy. He pulls me forward and gestures to a tall, dark, and handsome guy. “Marilyn, this here’s Tony. One-a the Jets’ founding members and my best friend! Tony-” He gestures to me. “This is Marilyn Jackson. Just moved here from upstate, so we’s make’n her feel welcome.”
Tony shakes my hand. “Pleasure to meet ya! I’d ask ya to dance but I promised my parole offer I wouldn’t get too involved with social events. I only came ‘cause Riff said I would-”
“And ya still came!” Riff smiles.
Tony gives him a glare. “Only for half an hour. I’s here for you, not to cause a rumble!”
Riff shrugs. “Ya can’t back outta this, buddy boy. Soon as the coast is clear we’s meet’n the Sharks to set it up.”
My face twists to a confused expression. “What’s a rumble-?”
“C’mon Riff, let’s dance!” Grazi grasps Riff’s wrist and pulls him back to the crowd, leaving me with Tony.
“Is he always this reckless?’ I ask.
He sighs. “Ever since we was kids. I was the one to hold him back, but since I’s been gone I fear that Riff’s been get’n outta hand.” He looks around the gym, then says: “I think I’m just gonna drift around ‘nd make sure the Jets play fair, if ya get my drift? You go on ahead- enjoy yourself!”
I go back to watching everyone jive and dance, and wondering what other odd characters I’m gonna meet in this city. I’m already caught between 2 gangs- what else is in store for Miss Jackson?
“You wanna dance, buddy boy?” I hear Riff jab- most likely at Bernardo.
Uh-oh.
I try to get closer to the clump-a angry dancers, but the chaperones and policemen are block’n my path. Once I do make it through, an argument’s already panning out.
“But I wanna dance! Riff, you said we could dance!” Grazi wines.
“I know, I know doll. Lemme just-”
“No! I’m sick-a this!” She shoves him and storms past, but then turns back. “We’re through!” She glares at me. “He’s your problem now!”
I just stare wide-eyed as people around me begin to argue, until Anita comes over and guides me into the hallway.
“Come, chica. This is no place for a young lady.”
I shake my head. “Is it always like this? Stupid gangs ruining social events?”
Anita nods. “I’m afraid so. All we can do is try to calm them down when it’s over.”
She goes off to the bathroom to fix her makeup, while I go sit next to Maria in the hallway. But she seems… distant.
“Maria? Are you ok?”
She nods, but then seems to rethink and shakes her head.
“Maria, what’s wrong?”
“I- I danced with a Jet boy,” she whispers. “And… I think I like him.”
I frown. “Who?”
“I think his name is Tony?”
“Oh, Riff’s friend! I kinda know him, he seems nice. What’s wrong with that?”
“Because Bernardo hates him! He hates all the Jets.”
I notice Tony walk up with Riff and the odda Jets as they go off with the Sharks.
Anita huffs. “Come, Maria. We’ve had enough drama for one night, so let’s head home. You coming, Marilyn?”
I look back and forth between the Jets that are still present and Anita. “Sorry Anita, but I’m gonna stay a bit longer and keep the guys in-check. You go on and get home safely.”
She nods and starts guiding Maria away, leaving me standing next to Tony.
“Buenas noches, Marilyn!”
“G’night, Maria!” I call back.
“Maria? Maria…” I see Tony get a dazed look in his eyes.
I wave a hand in front of him. “Uh, Tony? Earth-to-Tony? Ya with us?”
He blinks. “Marilyn? Have you ever heard-a luv at foist sight?”
“Uhh,” My eyes widen and my jaw drops. “Kinda?”
Tony gives a dopey smile. “Then I think I’m in luv! Marilyn, I just kissed the most beautiful goil I’ve ever met, and her name’s Maria!”
I gasp. “Maria? You mean my neighbor, Maria?”
“She’s your neighbor? Wow, you’re lucky!”
“She was just talk’n ‘bout you!” I hiss, look’n around to make sure nobody’s listen’n.
Tony gawks at me. “She was? What’d she say?!”
“I ain’t gonna be spill’n gossip- it’s just plain evil!” I cross my arms.
“Aw, c’mon Marilyn! Please! Does she luv me back? Did she like dance’n with me?” His smile fades. “Or- or does she hate me, and never wanna see me again…?”
I hold my hand up to steady the poor guy. “Alright, alright, fine! She luvs ya! Just don’t go have’n a meltdown on me! I got enough emotional baggage as it is!”
Tony’s face looks as if he’s been born again. “In that case, I’m gonna go find her!”
He starts off towards the exit, leaving me nearly speechless.
“Tony- Tony! Ya can’t just track her down! That’s creepy-!”
But it’s too late. Tony’s already head-over-heels and is out the door.
“Marilyn!”
Riff, now look’n more smug than ever, strides up. “Where’s Tony? He's gonna miss the meeting.”
I point to the door. “Just missed ‘im.”
Riff shrugs. “Guess I’ll have to fill him in later. Right now I gotta go meet with Bernardo.”
“Ay ay! Leave her alone!” Anita comes up and waves him off. She leads me away, but not before I look back one more time and see Riff air-kiss me goodbye.
As he turns to leave, Anita scrunches her face. “I suggest you stay away from that Jet boy- Riff. He’s no good for you. I’m going to tell Maria the same thing about her Jet boy- they’re all the same.”
“Tony’s not. He’s not like them, and he wants noth’n to do with the Jets. He’s only here because he’s their friend.”
“Once a Jet, always a Jet,” Antia argues as Bernardo strolls up to us. “Hola, mi amor! I left Maria with Chino.” She points at me. “And came back for you because Bernardo said he just scheduled a rumble for tomorrow night, and I do not want you around those Jets!” She walks off again, and that word keeps ringing in my head.
“A- A what?” I frown. “I’ve heard that word before… Riff mentioned it…”
Bernardo nods. “It’s a rumble, señorita. An all-out fight between gangs when only one comes out on top. We just planned out with the Jets for tomorrow night, so I suggest you stay in unless you want trouble.”
Bernardo storms outta the room with Anita, leaving me alone to think over this idea until Mouthpiece finds me again.
“Hey! I lost ya! Where’ve ya been?”
“Do you know about the rumble?” I ask darkly.
Mouthpiece opens his mouth, then shuts it again. “Who told you?”
“Bernardo.”
He scoffs. “Figures some PR would tell ya.”
“Is it really that bad?” My voice is uneven.
He avoids my gaze and nods. “Yeah, it can get pretty bad. That’s the reason Tony got locked up ‘cause he nearly beat a kid to death last year.”
My hand flies to my mouth. “Death? Mouthpiece… I don’t want anyone to die, is there any way to settle this without fighting?”
He smiles a little. “Ya worried ‘bout me, doll?”
“I’m serious! None-a you deserve to die! I could talk to Bernardo, he might call it off…”
“Fat chance.”
I roll my eyes. “What ‘bout Riff? If I could talk to him-”
“Ask and ye shall receive.” Riff strolls in, leans against the wall, and motions for Mouthpiece to leave. “Ya look’n for me, beautiful?”
I storm up to him and poke a finger at his chest.
“So. Tonight was all a ruse to plan a fight. And all for what? Territory? Because Tony danced with Maria?”
“That’s the broad’s name?” Riff asks with a scrunched face.
I smack him and start to breathe heavily.
“I was right. The rough gang leader was here tonight- a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You should be ashamed of yourself. They have every right to be here, same as you!”
Fed up with this, I storm off outta the gym and into an alley, all the while ignoring the faint calls from the aggravating Jet leader.

When We're Alone
A/N: 18+ Smut based on request
"Riff smut plz!!! (Maybe the reader being one of the Jets little sister)"
Masterlist
I arrived at my building and immediately recognized the sound of The Jets. As I climbed the stairs to my apartment, their hollering became louder and I groaned in frustration. Diesel told me he was working at the auto shop late tonight, why are they here? I open the door, slowly looking around, my eyes land on a small group of rowdy boys standing around my kitchen table. When I walk closer, silence fills the room as they turn to stare at me.
“What are you doing here?” I ask pointedly, looking from one to the other before looking at Riff, their leader. He’s sitting at the table, casually with his legs propped on the chair next to him and a tooth pick in his mouth.
“We’re waitin’ on yer brother, girly,” He leans back further into the chair.
“Well, you’ll be waitin’ a while,” I say walking past them to the fridge, pulling out a jug of lemonade and pouring myself a glass. “He’s workin’ late,” I turn back to face the group, “There’s really no point in you all hangin’ round.” I mumbled the last part, hoping not to anger them.
Mouthpiece lets out a loud groan, “Yer kiddin.” He turns his attention to Riff, “Can we go now?” he sounded like a whining child.
“Yeah,” A-Rab shouted, “She said he’ll be late.” The boys started to get worked up again, all shouting over each other. I attempted to get them to quiet down, but of course, they ignored me. Until Riff stood up, silencing them all.
“Alright,” he spoke slowly, taking the toothpick out of his mouth. I watched as he locked eyes with Ice briefly before giving a nod. “Roll out, boys.”
I watched as they began to file out the door, running down the stairs, the yells starting to become distant. All of them, except Riff. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw he had returned to his earlier position at the table. A lump grew in my throat, as I felt his stare.
“Mind if I wait here?” His voice was much softer than when I had heard him speak earlier. Not knowing what to say, I nodded back quickly returning to my lemonade. “Sorry about them,” he gestured towards the door.
“It’s fine,” I sigh out, “I’m kind of used to it by now.” I rolled my eyes and he smiled back. He had a beautiful smile that lit up his face, he looked like he wouldn’t hurt a fly when he smiled but I know better than that. I realised I was staring and quickly shook myself out of the trance. I watched his smile turn into his signature smirk, as he stood up from the table slowly.
“When did Diesel say he’d be home?”
“He didn’t,” I croaked out. My eyes went big at the sound of my voice, I had really hoped I wouldn’t sound nervous. I coughed, pretending to clear my throat. “Just that it’ll be late.” I stood up a little straighter, trying to recover from my little hiccup.
“I see,” Riff slowly began to walk towards me. “So it’s just you and me tonight,” he spoke lowly and I felt his hand lightly brush against my waist before resting on my hip. “Hows about we have a little fun?” He looked down at me, mischief reflecting in his eyes and I watched as he lowered his gaze on my body.
I was used to this side of Riff, whenever we were alone he couldn’t keep his hands off me. Not that I mind at all, he’s gorgeous. We always had to be careful though, Diesel would kill me if he knew I was foolin’ around with one of the Jets, not to mention the leader. I looked Riff up and down, returning his smirk before turning away and walking towards my bedroom. He quickly followed me, closing the bedroom door behind himself.
“I don’t know how long we have,” I said while slowly unbuttoning the shirt I had on. He nods at my words, but he’s too distracted by my body.
“Better get started then girly girl,” he replies smugly. I take off my top, revealing a red bra and Riff groans to himself before closing the space between us. “You sure you weren’t expectin’ someone? You’re lookin’ real sexy.”
“This is nothin’,” I say gesturing to my bra, doing my best not to blush. “Besides The Jets always come on Fridays and yo-,” I realize what I said and freeze, stopping mid-sentence.
“Oh really?” Riff wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me in even closer. He clearly caught what I said. “You mean to say, you get all dolled up for me?” His lips were on my neck in seconds, kissing and sucking lightly. I moaned quietly at the contact and I felt him smirk against my neck. “Jump,” he mumbled, as he moved his hands to my thighs. I did as he said and he caught me, wrapping my legs around his torso.
His lips now crashed onto my own in a wave of passion. I felt him walking me over to the bed before dropping me on it. His eyes, now dark and filled with lust, racked over my body. I felt his hands grip my skirt and rip it off in a matter of seconds, my panties were gone next. I propped myself up so I could see him better, his muscles glistened from sweat with each movement. I smirked to myself as I watched him frantically remove his clothes. His hands returned to my body, slowly making their way up my legs, I knew Riff was doing it on purpose.
“Riff,” I moaned, “stop teasing.”
“Where’s the fun in that?” He asked, in a playful manner. I watched as he slowly lowered his face to my pussy, maintaining eye contact with me.
I gasped as I felt his mouth leave kisses around my folds. His tongue moved expertly on my clit, rubbing small circles and earning a moan from me. A shiver ran through my body, feeling him suddenly blow onto the sensitive area. My hands grabbed his hair and he let out a grunt, burrowing his face into my pussy deeper. My legs began to shake as I got closer to my climax, I couldn’t help but moan out in pleasure.
“I’m so close, Riff,” I moan out and I feel him stop abruptly, pulling himself up to a standing position. I sat up, watching his every movement, mesmerized by his beauty.
“Not yet,” he said sternly, yanking off his boxers. His cock was already hard and looking at it made my mouth water. I instinctively licked my lips, looking up at him, waiting for approval. His smirk reappeared, “ya wanna suck me doll?” I nodded back in response. “How about ya suck me and then I pound that pretty little pussy?”
“Yes please,” I moan back in response. I grab his member by the base and slowly insert him into my mouth. He lets out a quiet moan as I take in his length, putting his hands in my hair. I feel him start to push my head further into his cock, making me gag slightly, the feeling making me wet. I let out a moan on his dick and I feel his grip on me tighten.
“Just like that,” He moaned, “be a little slut for me.” I moaned again at his words and hollowed out my mouth, starting to deep throat him faster. I moved my hand to his balls, massaging him lightly, earning another moan from Riff.
“That’s enough,” he practically growled and pulled me off of him, pushing me back onto the bed. He lined his cock up with my opening, thrusting deep into my pussy. I moaned as he quickened his pace, digging my nails into his back. My moans turned into screams moments later and I did my best to match his movements.
I could feel my orgasm nearing, and I threw my head back in pleasure, Riff’s name spilling from my mouth. I wrapped my legs around him tighter, pulling him impossibly closer to me. He leaned in, connecting our lips again sloppily. I bucked my hips into him, and he moaned into my mouth before lightly biting my lip. I came hard on his cock, a small scream of pleasure escaping my mouth. Quickening his pace, Riff quickly filled me with his cum before pulling out.
We stayed in bed for a moment before the sound of the door made us both jolt up. I started to fix myself, making it look like I was sleeping. Riff scrambled to his feet, putting his clothes on in record time before heading over to the window. He looked at me then back and the window, pausing briefly. Within seconds he was right in front of me, placing one last kiss hungrily on my lips and then dashing right back over. He sent me one last glance, giving me a wink then slipped down the fire escape.

Riff x Reader: Breakfast
Tumblr media
POV- You get your period and Riff shows his loving, sweet side by helping you out.
Notes: Hi guys! I’m not a new writer but I’m fairly new here so I hope this isn’t totally horrible. Welcome to my page and I hope you enjoy!
words: 566
Warnings: Blood, swearing, riff being too darn cute to handle.
——-
The familiar ache in your lower belly was enough to jolt you out of your sleep. It was either that or the gushing feeling of “Oh shit, I just ruined my sheets!”
You throw the covers off of you and stand up in one swift motion. Sure enough; an angry red stain grinned up at you, soaking up in the sheets. You swore under your breath as you changed your sheets and made your way to the bathroom.
You could’ve sworn you had at least another week before life grew its monthly horns. The ache in your lower belly grew to harsh pangs as they spread to your back.
’Of fuckin’ course you had to bleed through’ you thought, peeling the bloody shorts and underwear off your body. Of all days, this was the one that had to begin awful.
Your boyfriend, Riff, was supposed to be coming over in an hour to go for breakfast. The last thing he needed to be met with was his girlfriend turning into bloody Mary.
/////
Water droplets slowly dripped from
each bundled strand of hair and you dried yourself off from your shower. It really had a way of waking you up and you got dressed quickly. As you made your way to the door, a familiar pang in your stomach made you groan. Checking the time on your phone, you still had about 20 minutes until Riff would show up.
‘I can go lay down for a little and take a bit of a rest before going out.’ you thought to yourself, making your way to the bedroom.
The pain relievers looked tempting as you glanced at them on your way. You knew they would only worsen your bleeding as they’d always done in the past. Now you were left to deal with the cramps. You’d rather that than an overly heavy flow.
You curled yourself into a ball on your bed in desperation to stop the cramps that beat the shit out of you. You found yourself dozing off.
———
A soothing hand rubbed your back and you opened your eyes to see Riff staring back at you, a concerned look etched onto his handsome features.
“Thank god, Angel, ya nearly gave me a heart attack!”
How long were you asleep? You rubbed your eyes and smiled at him. “Sorry, I fell asleep for longer than I meant to. I had some…. issues.. but I’m ready.” Riff stared at you blankly.
“Issues? What issues, sweetheart? What’s wrong?” Your face turned a shade of red and you stared down, pursing your lips to prevent a goofy grin from spreading on your face.
“Wait… Do- Are you- Have- oh.”
You kept your head down in embarrassment but Riff’s rough calloused hands lifted your chin up and forced you to look into his eyes.
He cupped your face with his hand. “Let’s stay here today, girly girl. I’ll make you breakfast, well I’ll try to make you breakfast. How does that sound?”
Your heart fluttered at his sweetness. You leaned in and sweetly kissed him on the lips. “Perfect, baby. Thank you.”
Breakfast consisted of eggs and slightly burnt toast, which he was very apologetic about, but you didn’t care. It was perfect. Riff spent the rest of the day massaging your back and making sure you were okay. You fell asleep that night in the arms of your loving boyfriend.

Now, Sit Still. [riff lorton x reader]
*this will not follow the exact plotline of wss. pov will switch after line break.
~~~~~
“Valentina, are you sure about this? I can always stay later, you know that I-”
Valentina waved Y/n’s offer off with a wave of her hand, “Ay, mi querida, do not worry. You know how those...boys...can get...I do not want you to be walking home alone so late.” She shivered at the thought of the two fighting gangs, before going back to organizing the glass box the cash register sat on. Y/n’s face scrunched up in worry before she walked up to Valentina, helping her organize.
“Valentina, let me help, por favor.” Y/n had been trying to work on her Spanish slowly, so she began integrating bits and pieces into her vocabulary slowly. She wanted to make things easier for Valentina for being so kind to her. “It’s the least I can do.” Y/n affirmed softly, causing the older woman to smile and playfully smack Y/n’s shoulder. “You are too much like your-”
The door of Doc’s slammed open so hard that Valentina could’ve sworn the window broke. Both employees rushed forward towards the door, but the older one stopped before rolling her eyes.
“I told you, I do not want you in my store!” She said, a scowl resting on her face. For someone as kind and loving as her, any sort of displeasure on her was nerve inducing. Her eyes landed on the tall boy standing in the doorway. “C’mon, you know me. I’m not going to-”
“You’ve been stealing from me since you were six. Now get out,” Valentina deadpanned. Riff completely ignored her, his eyes and attention finding her, “Hi there, gorgeous.” He flashed a smile at Y/n, “Don’t you usually get off earlier than this?” He questioned before walking a bit closer to her. As enticing as Riff was, she knew he had an ulterior motive.
“What’re you hiding from now, Riff? Or who?” It was Y/n’s turn now to walk closer to him, causing him to scoff then swallow before looking at the girl nervously. “No one. A Jet don’t hide. Guys hide from me, it ain’t the other way around.” He spoke lowly before starting to walk towards the Milky Ways.
“Wanna cover me, girly girl?” He asked holding up a Milky Way and shaking it a bit, his typical smirk back on his face as if anything he just said never left his mouth. Rolling her eyes, she opened her mouth to say something before an idea came to mind. It was time for Y/n to wear her own smirk to challenge Riff’s. “Hmm, only if you tell me why you’re really in here.”
Clearly, Riff didn’t expect that. His eyes widened and Y/n had to fight very hard not to laugh. Riff didn’t expect Y/n to tease back, pleasantly surprising him. Riff swallowed his nerves and cleared his throat, looking at the candy bar in his hand. “Can we talk somewhere else?”
Y/n was taken by surprise by Riff’s request. Skeptically, she glanced between her boss and the tall Jet, “Ir. Estar a salvo.” The older woman spoke, before smiling at Y/n and repeating herself in English, “Go, be safe.” At that, Y/n smiled nervously and nodded before grabbing her bag and leading Riff to the door. The two walked together before Y/n ran back to the cash register, placing a coin into the drawer before walking back over to Riff who was holding the door open for her.
“Y’know, girly girl... I didn’t expect you to actually cover me.” Riff teased before shutting the door behind them, chuckling at her.
Valentina held her hands in front of her mouth, watching Y/n and Riff walk off together. Her nerves were frayed enough, but watching her surrogate child walk into the arms of a gang leader frightened her. She trusted Y/n, not Riff.
****
“Girly girl? And, yes, Riff, I had to cover you. Valentina is too sweet of a woman for you to keep stealing from her.” You reprimanded, causing Riff so smile. Has he always been this smiley? You shook the thought from your head and looked at your surroundings, “You’re not gonna try anything with me, are you?” She raised a brow, causing Riff to laugh. “Relax. I just didn’t want the old woman to hear me say what I wanna say. But, we’re here.” Riff kept walking to the edge of the park, to the river. He sat down at the edge and held a hand for you. You took his hand and sat next to him, looking out at the river.
“So...Are you going to tell me what you wanted to say?” You queried, a teasing tone evident in your voice. Riff was staring out at the river as if you never said anything at all. You leaned forward and waved a hand in front his face, causing him to snap out of it. “Hm?” he hummed quietly, finally looking over at you. “What did you-”
You had never noticed the slight heterochromia in his eyes until now and you were at a loss for words. Riff was a magnet and you were being pulled in, fast. Riff swallowed, his eyes staring deeply into yours. “I wanted to tell you,” Your lips were almost touching at this point, but he finally finished his thought when your lips brushed, “I love you.”
Then your lips touched, and your heart soared. For the entire time you’ve known Riff, you had longed to hear those words. You kissed him deeply and leaned into him, a hand coming up to hold your cheek. Riff pulled you closer with his other hand, resting it on your waist. You were ecstatic, for so long you had acted like you hated Riff, and now you could actually show how you truly felt about him.
Before you got too carried away though, a sudden loud whistle caused you to jump, “Ah, look at this. The Jet boy is taking our precious Y/n.” A voice said, causing your head to flick to it. “Anxious...?” You asked softly, looking at one of the Sharks, swallowing your nerves. You stood quickly, feeling Riff stand, a protective hand on your hip. You pushed the butterflies from your stomach out of your body and paid close attention to Anxious. You had no idea if he was alone.
As comforting as you found Riff’s hand placement, clearly this angered Anxious. He stepped closer to the two of you, grabbing you by your dress. “Hands off her, asshole.” Riff said, shoving him off you. Anxious stumbled back a bit, before going head to head with Riff. He grabbed Riff and wound up for a punch. You ran to him and pulled on his arm, “It’s okay, Anxious, you don’t have to-”
Too caught up in his own anger, he jerked his arm away and shoved you away, causing you to fly to the ground. With a whine of pain, both men’s heads snapped to you. You looked down at yourself and noticed your arm was scraped and bleeding, it dripping onto the bodice of your dress. You frowned as it was now ruined, as blood was next to impossible to remove from fabric.
Your eyes flicked up to Riff and you had sworn you’d never seen him so angry. You were happy that it wasn’t directed at you, but you were nervous that Anxious would get beat to a pulp. Riff swung a punch directly into Anxious’s nose, causing you to flinch. “Now look at what you did!” He said, venom lacing his words. Anxious held his nose as Riff gripped his shirt and prepared to throw Anxious to the ground.
“Riff!” You called out, standing up. Riff looked at you with sadness in his eyes and the anger in him returned at seeing the bloodstains on your dress. The dangerous fire of anger burned brightly as his eyes locked back onto Anxious.
“Riff, no! Stop. Don’t--” You took a second to pry his hands off of the other man, “Let him go.” You kissed his temple softly and Riff tsked, “But he-” Riff tried, but you held a finger up to his lips, “Let him go.” You repeated to him. Riff sighed softly and shoved Anxious away. “I see you again, you’re fuckin’ dead. Got it?”
Anxious spit out blood before turning around and glaring at Riff before turning t look at you. “I-”
“Anxious, please leave while I’m still entertaining the idea of not telling Bernardo about this whole thing.” You said flatly, a brow raised and a hand waving him off. At your words, Anxious turned around and took off running.
As soon as Anxious turned around, Riff was on you in a second, examining your injuries closely. “I’m sorry princess, I shoulda killed him before he had the chance to-” You shook your head very quickly, “Violence is not the answer to everything, darling.” A light blush fanned over Riff’s face at the use of the pet name. He placed a kiss onto your forehead before nodding. “I’ll work on that, just for you.” He smiled, causing you to smile too. He leaned in to kiss you, holding your face in his hand,
“Ow.” Your sudden word of pain caused Riff to almost fly back. He had temporarily forgotten your injuries and he tsked once again. “C’mon...” Riff spoke, leading you away from the river by your uninjured arm.
Riff led you back to his home, showing you a plethora of first aid and tattered cloths you could only assume were used to wrap wounds and other injuries. “Woah...” You let out quietly, causing the boy to laugh softly. “Yeah, gang fights’ll do that to ya...” He trailed off before sitting you down next to his first aid station. “ ‘M sorry for the mess.” He mumbled before starting to get to work on cleaning you up. He looked around his room before handing you one of his spare shirts. “Do you want to change into this?” Riff asked, starting to stand. “I wouldn’t look, don’t worry.” He put his hands up as he backed up and inched closer to the door before smirking, “Unless you want me to.” he winked, causing you to blush dark.
You took a second to think before reaching your hand forward to him, flicking your fingers to and from yourself. “Give it to me.” Riff did as you asked and turned around and leaned on the door frame, his eyes on the wall. You removed the dress and slid Riff’s shirt over your head, it draping over your underdress. “Ya decent?” He asked. You nodded, forgetting he couldn’t see you. “Yes.” You said shortly before he turned around and smiled at you.
Riff walked back over to you and his smile only grew as he crouched again with you near his first aid, “You look good in my shirt. Maybe I’ll let you keep it.” You laughed softly, your heart swelling just a bit. Your laugh caused Riff to begin laughing too. Eventually though, your laughter died down and Riff began to frown, “Doll face, you know this is gonna hurt right?” You nodded and held your arm out to him, “It’s okay. I trust you.” You reassured Riff, smiling at him. “Gotta trust my boyfriend, don’t I?”
Riff’s breath caught in his throat and he sputtered. His usual calm and collected personality had faltered, “Woah there, girly girl. And who said that’s who I was?” He asked quietly, his pupils growing in size. You could see the love in his eyes and you blushed before leaning forward and kissing him.
You pulled away, much to his dismay. He leaned forward to catch your lips in his once again, leaving you to only raise a brow at him. “Okay...Okay, I say that’s who I am. Give me those cute lips again, doll.” He grinned, causing you to laugh and kiss him again. He wrapped his arms around you, pulling you impossibly close. He ran his hands up and down your body before you pulled away. “You’re getting carried away, darling.” You teased, causing him to only smile and kiss your nose before leaning back to look at your wound. “Can’t help myself with you, Y/n. You’re changin’ me, doll.”
Another smile spread on your face, “And you’re changing me, Riff.” Riff turned your arm for further examination, “How could that asshole be so careless? I swear to ya, Y/n, the very next time I see that motherfucker, I’m really gonna-”
“Riff?”
“Yeah, baby doll?”
“Could ya just clean it please?”
The two of you laughed and he nodded and finally picked up the first aid, “Okay okay, workin’ on it. Keep in mind how bad it’s gonna hurt though.” You nodded, “I know.” Riff picked up the alcohol and poured it over your open wound.
“Ow.” You whined, a frown burning deeper onto Riff’s face. “I know baby doll, I’m sorry. Almost done.” The Jet reassured, cleaning the last bit of your injury. After wrapping up your wound, he took the dress you were wearing and walked to another part of his room, started to scrub at it. You smiled at his dedication and followed behind him. You watched him try everything he had to attempt to get the stains out. Ultimately though, he accidentally made it worse.
“I’m sorry about your shirt.” Riff said sheepishly, frowning at the stained and soaked fabric. You sat next to him and rubbed his shoulder, kissing his temple. “It’s okay. I was going to throw it out anyways.” Riff smiled and laughed softly,
“No you weren’t.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“That’s what I thought. Now, sit still.”
i am ash from your fire | riff lorton
summary: catalina torres, anita palacio’s cousin, arrives in new york city for bernardo’s funeral. meeting riff lorton is, admittedly, the worst part of it.
warnings: canon/time period typical racism, cursing, mentions of death & violence (stabbing)
a/n: hi y’all! this is the result of falling headfirst into a mike faist rabbit hole lmao. this is first installment of my enemies with benefits to fwbs to lovers riff series, and i’m beyond pumped to get into the characters and the storyline. everything is basically the same as west side story (2021) except riff survives, so this story takes place after the events of the film. i hope you love catalina as much as i do, as well as her and riff’s story, and i’m super excited for this! enjoy!
They buried Tony and Bernardo on the same day. The cemeteries were side by side, close enough to hear the faint strainings of each service.
Anita never stopped crying.
In all her days, Catalina Torres had never seen her cousin so distraught. Her last memory of Anita had been her smiling face, waving a handkerchief as she rode off with Bernardo and Maria, beaming with the light of a thousand suns. The tears that marked her face now fell viciously, carving her pain in clear tracks down her face. This Anita had American scars, and Catalina did not know quite what to make of them yet.
“Maria should be here,” Anita hiccuped, black handkerchief quivering between them.
“I know,” Catalina whispered back, squeezing her hands as hard as she could, “I know.”
Catalina had not imagined her first day in America to be one of such sorrow. Still, she was not naive enough to believe she would have left it in Puerto Rico. Sorrow follows you, stacking stones along your back until you either cast them off and kick to the surface or drown under their weight. One look at Anita told Catalina she was drowning. As she always would, Catalina threw her a life vest.
She took Anita’s face into her hands gently and murmured, “Escúchame bien — Maria volverás soon, okay? She wouldn’t miss her brother's funeral.”
And she didn’t. Maria’s arrival wasn’t heralded by any pomp or circumstance, simply a black veil covering her face and her stumbling headfirst into Anita’s arms. They held each other and cried as Catalina looked on, wondering how all of this could have happened so quickly. The last time she had seen Bernardo, he was holding onto Anita, staring at her like she was the so-called land of dreams they were soon to discover together. Catalina remembered promising Anita and Maria that he would take them to America with him as soon as he figured out a way. Anita went to bat for Catalina, convincing him that she, as her cousin (and truthfully, more of a sister), should come as well. Though it took some time, he eventually agreed. The three of them were to go over first, and when they were settled and prepared, send for Catalina. They set a date – and when her feet touched American soil for the first time, she wondered why Bernardo and Maria were not there to greet her. She thought of Chino, who would have stood in, but she was overjoyed to see Anita nonetheless, even if she was alone. She’d held the woman tighter than she ever had in her entire life, assuming the sobs wracking her body were like hers, a result of this joyous reunion. It wasn’t until they had gone to Anita’s apartment that Catalina learned of Bernardo’s fate and Maria’s sudden disappearance.
Three weeks had passed since Catalina’s arrival, and in them, she had become a full fledged member of the Sharks. With Chino in jail and the Jets leaderless as well, the only thing keeping the two gangs from an all out war was the promise of similar fates to their leaders, or to join their comrades on both sides locked away in a dingy space behind cold iron bars. New York City was ripe for the taking, yet no one had come to claim it. It was as though they were all tiptoeing around a powder keg, waiting for someone to light a match before they scrambled to steer clear of the blast.
“I have to — I have to go see him,” Maria blubbered, looking past Anita to the gates of the other cemetery some yards over. Anita said nothing, stone faced. Naturally, Catalina spoke up.
“You shouldn’t go alone.”
She took Maria’s hand and offered her half a smile, accompanied by a light squeeze. She’d always thought of Maria as a younger sister, the determined little girl chasing after her and Anita. They would find her running up under their feet, and the three of them became inseparable, spending their time daydreaming of what their lives would be once they left the island. The woman standing before her now wasn’t one Catalina entirely recognized. She had never seen her grief hardened shoulders, the dulled glint in her eyes, as though she were a ghost surrounded by the living.
“You two, take Camilo with you,” Anita said, too overwhelmed with emotion to fight the simple request. Maria’s mouth opened to protest until Catalina murmured, “Trust me,” to her under her breath. To Anita, she nodded, allowing Camilo to walk them away from Bernardo’s grave when he appeared. The path was muddy, but her mind was far from how difficult it would be to clean the pile of shoes that would undoubtedly appear in the apartment later. Instead, she focused on Maria, in her simple black lace trimmed dress, hiccuping every other second. She’d heard the story of the rumble recounted from Anita, who was told by Chino. Bernardo had fought valiantly, his quick feet and rapid movements aided by his boxing career. He stabbed the leader of the Jets, Riff Lorton, and the young man had collapsed to the ground. Tony, Maria’s beloved, was overcome by a murderous rage. He killed Bernardo, the sister of the woman he loved, in cold blood. Then he’d run off like the coward he had been, disappearing into the night until he had been about to reunite with Maria and Chino shot him. What Anita had told her, what Chino did not know, was the lie she had told in her own anger and rage, as well as what the Jets had done to her. When Catalina first heard the tale recounted, she had almost been sick. But the more she thought of it, that sickness turned to devastation. And from that devastation rose rage that burned with all the heat of her homes, new and old, combined.
The group’s pause at the gates of the other cemetery forced Catalina from her head. It was nearly identical to the one they had just come from, only there was no carved inscription in Spanish underneath the angel. Chino had done it on his first day here, when one of the Sharks had fallen at the hands of a Jet. In her time in America, she’d begun to understand the dynamics of the two groups. Catalina had gotten a job with Anita, mending other women’s clothes. Maria’s position at the bridal shop and a position at Doc’s had both opened up, but Catalina felt comfort in the familiarity of the routine. She had mended her own clothes and others back in Puerto Rico, and it was rather easy to return to tailoring in this slightly altered context. She had worked on the dress she wore now, a long sleeved knee length black number with red lace hidden underneath the layers of black fabric. She was a Shark now, and this small act of rebellion and remembrance was the least she could do to honor Bernardo’s memory.
Catalina took a quick look past the gates and exhaled in relief upon seeing a general lack of presence around what she assumed was Tony’s grave. Both ceremonies had long ended, leaving only a smattering of mourners in each space. Maria’s body trembled as she stepped forward. Camilo laid a hand on her arm and her eyes flashed, her lips set into a tight twist.
“Camilo,” Catalina said quietly, stepping in between the two, “I forgot my handkerchief. It’s with Anita — can you please go get it? Maria’s is ruined.”
As if cued, Maria held out her soaked square of fabric. Camilo stared at them both for five seconds before he swallowed, nodding twice before darting off.
“Thank you,” Maria whispered, and Catalina nodded, albeit a bit stiffly. It went unsaid (though not misunderstood) that she’d offered her assistance for Maria’s sake and not out of any semblance of respect for Bernardo’s killer. The girl wasted no time, practically sprinting over to the grave. Catalina followed leisurely behind, acting as a lookout. Rather than standing close to Maria, she settled in the shadow of a mausoleum a yard or so away. She had no sympathy for the dead man in the dirt, but her respect for the dead dictated she not observe Maria’s mourning.
The stream of curses from flooding her mouth cared not for her morals.
“That gringo hijo de puta.”
Catalina spat into the dirt, taking out the cigarette she had stashed in her dress and lighting it with Bernardo’s lighter and a prayer for her minor blasphemy.
“Death is too good for him. And to have your sister weep at the sight of his body in the ground – ojala se lo coman los gusanos. And I know – I know – Maria loved him – loves him – pero… a mi no, y a mi nunca. He doesn’t deserve her love, or anyone’s. He’s nothing but a cold blooded murderous bastardo – jodele! Dios, Nardo, if you were here to see this— ”
“Take that back.”
The unfamiliarity of the voice is what paused her. Not the fact that it slurred half the syllables spoken and was dark as the dirt underneath her shoes, weighed down by an emotion far more powerful than grief alone. She noted the fact that it was strange and foreign to her, American, and that was what made it potentially dangerous. She had turned away from Maria’s direction to give her privacy, but she found that the voice’s demand came from that direction, so Catalina pivoted slowly, taking a drag from the cigarette. She blew it out, and when the smoke cleared, found herself looking into eyes colored the brightest blue she had ever seen. They were extremely bloodshot, which, curiously enough, only heightened their coloration. It was as though all the sorrow in the world had swirled into those eyes, every tear, choked sob, murmured gasp. In them she saw a pain she was all too familiar with – the loss of a brother. A skinny frame came into view as her eyes flicked over the new figure, accompanied by light brown hair sticking up in all directions which was slightly offset by their pale skin.
“I don’t know what the hell you just said, but take it back.”
His voice was low, a bit more controlled but still teetering on the edge of calamity. The wrong breath could have knocked him over, she thought. What refused to brush past her was the strength of his New York accent. He spoke with a certainty she’d found clung to native New Yorkers like blood to white fabric; that no matter who or what came their way, they would claw over anyone and anything to get to the top. Or perhaps that was merely the Jets she’d encountered thus far.
Catalina raised her eyebrows up ever so slightly, inhaling another drag and exhaling it calmly.
“What, are you going to make me? You can barely stand there without falling on your ass.”
The man took a step forward, swaying a little bit. She spotted a paper bag with a bottle neck peeking out of one hand, his own cigarette in the other.
“Tony was better than all of us. Better than me, better than you, better than that walking death certificate crying over his grave right now— ”
“Her name is Maria,” Catalina hissed fiercely, her eyes flashing in warning. No matter her thoughts on Tony, Maria was family. There would be no slander of her or another Shark’s name in her presence. Ever. “And your precious Tony killed Bernardo, so Chino killed him. A life for a life.”
“Bullshit,” he spat, “He didn’t have to die. He should be here right now. Not her.” He took a swig from the bag, a cold gleam entering his eyes. “That broad’s the one that got him killed. His death is on her hands. What the hell is she even doin’ here?”
The words burst from Catalina’s lips before she could stop them. Not that she particularly wanted to. After holding back for so long, she was overdue for an explosion.
“He got himself killed! All Maria did was love him. His fate is his own.”
The man opened his mouth to speak, glaring at her with daggers of fury, a spark away from a rampage, but the floodgates had opened. The water rushed forth, unforgiving.
“Bernardo should be here right now,” Catalina growled, fisting part of her skirt in her hand and stepping up to the man, “And he isn’t. Maria deserves to be here. That gringo does not deserve her tears, or any defense. He deserves to be in the ground.”
They were only three feet from each other, each sixty seconds away from going nuclear. Red had started to bleed into Catalina’s vision, painting the man before her in the scarlet tones of her temper. How dare he speak upon Maria, or Bernardo, or any of them. What could he have possibly known?
“Riff!” a new voice yelled, and another person ran up, short dark black hair and a rock in their step. From behind her, Camilo reappeared at her side silently.
“We got a problem here?” the Jet asked with an icy snear, “What are you PRs doing on our turf anyway?”
“It could be our turf any day now, gringo,” Camilo returned, equally chilled.
Both of them set their hands at their sides, each casting a look to Riff and Catalina.
Maria, still weeping at the foot of Tony’s grave, looked up.
“A friend came to pay her respects,” Catalina said, forcing an evenness into her tone as the red receded. “Now we’re leaving.”
She took Camilo’s arm and subtly tugged him with her, walking past Riff and his Jet.
“Don’t come back,” Riff called, and Catalina’s head whipped over her shoulder at him.
“Vete a la mierda,” she hissed, “And take your pathetic excuse for a gang with you.”
She missed the murmured retaliation in maintaining the confidence in her steps.
“Maria, vamo cariña,” Catalina murmured, gently lifting her friend from the dirt and holding her upright. They returned to the apartment and Anita and Catalina climbed in with Maria, enveloping her between them. The young girl fell asleep first, then her cousin, leaving Catalina alone with her mind and the moonlight shining down through the fire escape. She replayed the events of the day, concentrating until the words, “Cool it, Anybodys, I got a plan,” appeared. In the moment, she hadn’t thought much of him, or his name. But with nothing else to consider, a ferocious scowl painted her face as the pieces clicked together. Riff Lorton, the leader of the Jets, was alive, and already scheming their next movements.
Catalina’s eyes drifted downwards to the two women slumbering beside her. They both looked so young in their sleep, unburdened by the trials and tribulations they had gone through to get here, by the losses they’d endured, the triumphs that had slipped through their fingers. And in that moment, Catalina made a vow. She would not rest until her family was safe, until the Jets were properly dealt with and the Sharks were up on top. She would do whatever it took to secure them all, make the American dreams they’d long been chasing a reality. And no one, especially not a mess of a man somehow recalled to life, would stand in her way.
Catalina fell asleep calmly. In the morning, she could plot and plan. But tonight, she would be with the two people that meant the most to her in the world and pretend that everything would be all right.
The next morning, Maria was gone. All that remained of her presence was a note and the promise of living in her heart forever, and maybe the occasional visit or two if she believed she could handle it. New York City was no longer her home, and she could not bear to remain without Tony. Catalina saw the look in her cousin’s eyes change, witnessed the exact moment when the old Anita died. She rose from the kitchen table differently, as though the strings that had been pulling her through her life for the last few weeks had been cut and she was now fully in control of her body.
“Chino is in jail,” Anita said slowly, “Maria left. Bernardo is –” Her hands shook for two seconds before she flexed her fingers and regained control. She continued with an unwavering voice. “Bernardo is dead. The Jets are biding their time, waiting for the opportunity to move. They’ve taken everything from us. They cannot have this, too.”
The steel in her tone drew a spark of pride into Catalina’s eyes.
Anita pushed her shoulders back, wiping the last of the tears from her eyes and exhaling.
“The Sharks need a leader. And because Bernardo and Chino aren’t here, that falls to me. I think I can make them listen, I think I can do this, but not alone. I need you. I need you, Cati.”
She was silent for a moment, letting the weight of Anita’s words truly settle into the space between them. And when she was ready, she spoke.
“I just have one question,” Catalina said, the barest hint of a smirk beginning to cross her face, “When do we start?”
“You’re joking.”
“I’m not, I swear!” You laughed, a little because you were tipsy, but mostly at the incredulous look on Riff’s face.
“Tony?” His eyebrows alternated between shooting high and furrowing, unable to process the fact that you, his partner, used to have a crush on his best mate. “What? Why? When?”
“Uh, I think it was when he used to work at Doc’s? I had popped in just to buy some medicine, but what can I say? Have you seen that man’s smile?” You rambled, oblivious to the deepening scowl on Riff’s face.
“And that hair, he could be starring in freaking shampoo commercials with those locks. Not to mention,” you went on, well past drunk now, “His face looks like it’s been sculpted by the gods.”
“Right,” Riff said sourly, causing your head to snap towards him at the change in his tone, but you were still unable to place the emotion on his face- was it anger? Jealousy? Deciding to find out, you put your drink down on a table to the side of the couch, scooting over closer to him and squinting your eyes to scrutinise his expression.
He simply scoffed, taking your actions as a way of making a move on him, and turned his head away, tilting his chin up to take a large swallow of his drink. Definitely jealous, you thought to yourself, noticing the way his jaw had tightened over the course of your conversation, the way his hand tightened on the cool glass bottle, God, you’re hot when you’re jealous. You realised too late that you had vocalised your last thought out loud.
Riff sputtered on his swallow, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, turning to look at you with wide eyes, “I’m not jealous!”
You just giggled at his blatant lie, leaning up slightly to place a series of gentle kisses on his tense jaw, loving the way he immediately relaxed to your touch, the goosebumps you could feel forming against your cheeks as you peppered fluttery kisses on his skin. “Sure you aren’t, Lorton,” you said, words muffled into his body.
“I’m not,” he said, but with a lot less conviction as he sighed, leaning in closer to you. You pulled away from your soft assault on his skin, your hands coming up to gently sweep across his exposed collarbone, finding their way to the hair on the nape of his neck, turning him so he could meet your eyes again.
“Well,” you said slowly, “In that case, wanna know what I thought Tony’s best feature was?”
His shoulders slumped visibly and his eyes looked defeated, but he nodded yes anyways. “Go on.”
He let out a sharp gasp as you suddenly swung one of your legs over his thighs, straddling him, your hands moving to grab the collar of his shirt, tugging him closer to you.
“His best friend,” you whispered, closing the distance between you.
Confidential Couple
“good afternoon, riff.” Y/N said in her thick puerto rican accent, meeting up with him in a secluded alleyway.
riff looked up from lighting his cigarette. “hey Y/N, how’s my lady feeling today?”
“good. and you?”
“my day has gotten a whole hell of a lot better now that you’re here.” riff replied.
riff and Y/N both knew how bizarre of a partnership their relationship was. gringos weren’t supposed to like puerto ricans, and vice versa. especially when riff is the leader of the jets, infamously known for being overprotective of their territory.
Y/N and riff met completely on accident. one day, riff stumbled across a group of puerto rican men beating up on a girl who he believed to be white at first. when he scared the men away and saw that the girl was, in fact, not white, he felt the need to help her anyway. normally, in any other circumstance, he wouldn’t have helped. but she seemed different than all the girls he’d been betrayed by in the past. she carried herself differently, and riff took note of that right away.
riff tried not to become friends with Y/N. and Y/N tried not to become friends with riff. she was extremely shy, and she didn’t want to let her walls down for riff. when Y/N mentioned to him that it was a regular occurrence for the group of older men to beat her up, riff couldn’t help but feel remorse for her. that was a weird feeling for him, as he had never truly experienced it before, especially with a puerto rican girl. given her inherited introverted nature, riff wanted to keep the men that hurt Y/N at bay for as long as possible.
riff tried his hardest to avoid Y/N because he knew if any of the jets saw him anywhere near a puerto rican, he’d practically be exiled. however, something about her kept drawing him back. maybe it was because he desperately craved an escape from living his life as a gang leader. whatever it may be, as more and more time passed, the more often he found himself with Y/N. eventually, a casual friendship developed into a secret romance.
riff opened his arm to give Y/N a hug. given her small stature, she rested her head just below his shoulder in the hug, and riff reached down to reciprocate it.
“what would you like to do today?” Y/N asked, pulling away.
“not like we can go many places, right?” riff replied, taking a puff from his cigarette.
Y/N loved her relationship with riff, despite hating how secretive it had to be. she completely understood why he needed to keep it a secret, it was just a downside to falling in love with a gang leader.
she shrugged in response, looking down.
“you’re extra quiet today, what’s wrong?” riff asked bluntly, stepping closer to her.
“i’m always quiet, riff.”
he laughed and ruffled her hair playfully. “i know that, i just thought you seemed even more quiet than usual, that’s all.”
Y/N shrugged. “i know, i just wish we could do more together. i wish we didn’t have to hide.”
riff sighed, rubbing her shoulders with his hands. “i know girly girl, but it’s safer for the both of us if we keep it a secret. my boys find out, i’m dead. your people find out, you’re dead. the more secretive we are, the better.”
Y/N looked down, and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “we can still have fun today.”
after more discussing, the couple decided on playing card games, eating snacks, and resting for the whole day at riff’s place.
riff’s hang out spot was an abandoned train car in the junkyard. he had set up a small table and a bed for him to rest on. for him, it was home. Y/N liked the simplicity of his “house”. she wasn’t into everything lavish and grand.
Y/N couldn’t decide if riff let her win at cards over and over again, or if she was actually really good at them. but, she also figured riff would actually play every so often so she would lose, and riff could tease her about being bad at cards. regardless of the outcome, she enjoyed this valuable time with him.
after a few hours into one of their last games, riff sat up in his spot, holding up a finger that silenced Y/N.
“riff, what-”
“shhh!” he interrupted, listening. Y/N sunk back in her chair a bit.
then, she heard it too. it was the sound of footsteps growing closer and closer to riff’s train car.
“shit,” riff started, standing up. “you gotta hide.”
“hide, seriously?” she whispered back.
“yes, i mean it. these people will not approve of you, and i don’t want them to hurt you, now hide!”
Y/N scrambled to find a sufficient spot to hide in riff’s small abode. suddenly, she realized there was just enough space under his bed for her to hide.
“go, go!” riff said, helping her under the bed. when she disappeared, he sat quietly at his table when a knock sounded on the metal outside his home. Y/N held her breath, trying to keep anxious tears from spilling out of her eyes.
“who is it?” riff asked monotonously.
“a-rab and tiger.”
riff lit a cigarette and took a quick puff. “come in.”
they stepped into his train car and looked around. “who were you talking to in here, riff?” a-rab asked.
riff kept the cigarette he was smoking resting on his lips. “no one.”
“so you were talking to yourself?” tiger asked, not believing riff for a second.
“yes.” riff said coldly, with a sharp “s”.
a-rab squinted at him, before smiling playfully. “you hidin’ a girl here, riff?”
“no.”
“then how ‘bout we have a look around?” asked tiger.
“not like you can even look around much, this is a small place.” riff replied.
meanwhile, Y/N watched the feet from outside the bed walk past multiple times, and it took all of her energy to not make a noise. she was frightened of riff’s friends.
she watched as a pair of shoes stopped in front of the bed, and before she knew it, a pair of eyes that weren’t riff’s caught sight of Y/N. she snapped her own eyes shut, hoping that if she didn’t see him, he wouldn’t see her.
“oh tiger, i think i found something.”
“a lady?” tiger asked, bending down to take a look.
“yep, riff’s hiding a lady.”
“and for good reason too,” riff started harshly. “there’s a reason she had to hide when she heard you two. she doesn’t want anything to do with you.”
“we just want to meet the lucky gal.” tiger said.
“no means no, tiger. now leave.” riff said with a very stern tone.
tiger and a-rab exchanged looks, before going on either side of the makeshift bed and lifting it to the side before riff could stop them.
tiger and a-rab gawked at the sight before them. “woah.” they both saw that Y/N was puerto rican, and not white like they had expected. she had light tear marks on her face.
Y/N looked up to the men and saw their confused, angry, and hurt faces before backing herself as close to the wall as possible.
“you assholes!” riff yelled, storming over to the two jets.
“riff, what the hell is this?” tiger asked.
“how could you do this to the jets? how could you betray us like this?” a-rab continued. “she’s puerto rican!”
“you guys didn’t have to see this. i kept this a secret for a reason. you guys stormed in here and did your own thing, and now we’re all angry. you two need to leave. as your leader, that is an order.” riff yelled, stepping closer to the boys.
Y/N watched the scene unfold in front of her in horror. tiger turned to her, and began to speak. “what have you done to riff?” he started. “he used to be like us. what kind of puerto rican witch shit did you do to make him like you?”
Y/N froze, trying to find words. she stuttered as more slow tears fell out of her eyes. she hated that she was so shy.
“look, she can’t even speak when spoken to, lousy pig!” a-rab yelled.
“hey!” riff yelled again, pushing the boys towards the opening of his train car. “the only person that gets to say anything about Y/N, positive or negative, is me, you hear? now scram before i take a chain to your head.”
he pushed them again and they ran out, not looking back. riff watched as they ran far away.
riff whipped his head around and saw Y/N crying on the floor. he walked over to her, sat down next to her, and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. she leaned her head in and rested her head on his chest, and riff kissed the top of her head.
“i’m sorry, Y/N. i’m so, so sorry.” riff said quietly, gently rubbing her arm.
Y/N lifted her head up and looked at riff. he turned his head so his eyes met hers. “i was scared, that’s all. i guess this crying is a little over dramatic, isn’t it?” she said, laughing a bit.
riff wiped her tears away. “yeah, it is.” he teased.
Y/N giggled, and riff laughed back. “i’m kidding, you handled it just fine. i’m happy they didn’t do anything to you.”
the two sat comfortably together until Y/N fully calmed down. when she did, they stood up, and riff looked down on her. he held her hands in his own for a moment, and then he let go of one and placed it on the side of her face, tilting her head up so she looked at him.
“you know, i always forget how short you are.” riff whispered.
Y/N rolled her eyes. “riff, ni siquiera vayas allí. don’t even go there.”
A Clean Slate (Balkan x OC)
Tumblr media
I also have a request. Balkan x OC. Idc what happens in it, I just need him!
Another sunny day. Too bad I have to spend it working indoors.
“God I hate this place,” Rita groans from across the shop. “I can’t wait to get outta here!”
“Calm down, mi querida!” Valentina assures her. “You may not like it here, but some of us had to work hard to get here!”
My coworker goes on complaining while I zone out and scrub the counter. Rita’s always complaining because of her position in the Jet gang. Apparently the Jets are a big deal, but I’ve never personally met them because I just moved from Brooklyn. My father’s in the police force and he transferred to the West Side, which meant I had to wipe a clean slate and start over with making friends. Turns out the goils of the West Side ain’t so friendly and instead of being social I’ve decided on keeping a steady job during summer vacation. Doc’s is the perfect place because Valentina needs all the help she can get.
I hear the door bangs open and a man wearing jeans and a white tank top steps in.
“Ey, Rita! Ya done woirk’n yet? We’s got business in ‘Hattan to deal with!”
“Alright, alright.” Rita follows the brute out, strangely looking more bored than before.
Time slips by, only providing us with a few customers, and before I know it it’s already 5:30.
“Time to clock out, Lottie.” Valentina walks out from the back room holding the keys. “Don’t worry about the clean up. Tony’s stopping by to mop. Buenas noches!”
“Good night, Valentina.” I grab my purse and head into the cool summer night. The sun hasn’t set yet and a gorgeous collage of orange and pink spreads across the sky. I clutch my purse close and begin the walk home-
“Hey! Runaway coin!”
The clinking sound of metal draws my attention to a silver-colored coin rolling down the sidewalk. It nearly reaches the sewer until I step on it with my blue heel.
“Much obliged, doll!” A man jogs up from behind and kneels down to look for his coin. “Um, where’d it go?”
“Oh, sorry.” I lift up my foot to reveal the gleaming coin. “Here it is.”
The man keeps his face down as he retrieves his possession. What I don’t expect is for him to lean down to kiss my foot.
“Excuse me?” I jerk away. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Now the man stands up and I can see him. He’s wearing an olive-green shirt with the sleeves rolled up under a blue vest, along with dark jeans and sneakers. At first I think he’s too bizarre to trust, however the thankful expression on his face makes me reconsider.
“Sorry, doll. ‘S just that this coin means everything to me. Guess I overreacted.” He holds out a hand and we both shake, causing my heart to respond by racing much too fast than I’d like it to.
“You ain’t from here, are ya? I’d remember you if you were.”
I shyly shake my head and fidget with my purse. “No, I just moved from Brooklyn.”
“Brooklyn, eh? Well then let me be gentlemanly enough to officially welcome you to the West Side!” He gives me a quick salut. “Name’s Balkan, from the Jets.”
My breath catches and I step away. “Jets? That’s the gang everyone talks about. I heard some people were almost killed in a fight last month.”
Balkan pockets his coin and holds up a steady hand, eyeing me with a calm demeanor.
“Yeah, there were a few close calls. But that was before the peace agreement. You got nothing to worry about.”
I want to believe him, but my father’s teachings are spinning through my head.
“My father’s a police officer. If you do anything to me, he will find you.”
There’s a noticeable spark in Balkan’s eyes, something that imitates fear. But it only lasts a split-second. He steps a few feet back and holds his hands out for me to see.
“I’m unarmed, I swear. I don’t want you to feel unsafe. What’s your name?”
He knows his law procedures. This is how dad says criminals are supposed to stand when they’re arrested. Has he ever been arrested? Calm down, Lottie. He asked a decent question.
“I’m Lottie.” My voice shakes a little. “Nice to meet you, Balkan.”
Balkan nods respectfully. “That’s a pretty name. If you want you can call me Marcus. That’s my real name, Marcus Jackson.”
I’ll have dad run a background check on him later.
“Since you’re new, would you want me to show you around?”
Keep calm, relax. He’s just being friendly.
“Um, maybe some other time? During the day?”
It’s strange how Balkan isn’t getting annoyed by my paranoid behavior. He’s been nothing but respectful, which is something I don’t expect from a gang member.
“I get that. Is your home nearby? I wanna make sure you get there safely.”
I inch further away towards the direction of home. “I’d rather not have you know where I live, if you don’t mind. Now if you’ll excuse me.”
Taking a deep breath, I swiftly walk past the now-stuttering Jet.
“What’s it gonna take for you to trust me?”
I keep walking. “In Brooklyn I learned to trust nobody. People are disappointing, they will take what they want and spread lies when they’re through with you.”
Now Balkan is walking to keep up. “I’m sorry that happened, but not everyone is like that. It doesn’t have to be too serious. I’ll start.” He clears his throat. “Hello, my name is Marcus. I come from a broken family because my own father left when I was 5. I met the Jet leaders Tony and Riff a few years ago, and since then I've become one-a the Jets’ best fighters. I know that sounds whacky to you, but to me the Jets are my family.”
His sad background sounds like lots of the cases dad talks about at home. He says delinquents are unpredictable. But this is the first time I’ve heard the other side of the story.
I stop walking and look at Marcus with a different perspective. “I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that. We both have conflicted pasts, but that shouldn’t define the future. Would you, um, still be willing to walk me home?”
Dad’s going to kill me.
Marcus grins in delight and offers an arm. More gentleman than delinquent. “I’d luv to, Lottie.”
I take his arm and we resume walking. Another trait that surprises me is his smell. It’s mint. Like a fresh peppermint pattie.
“Why is your coin important to you?” Just keeping up the conversation.
“It was my old man’s. He gave it to me before he left, said a million-dollar fortune could be made out of a single coin.” Marcus shakes his head and laughs. “Some fortune now, huh?”
His unfaltering optimism is something to admire. “What is it you plan to do for a living after school?”
“Dunno, maybe something with mechanics. I’m pretty good with building things. Have you met Jackie yet?”
The name brings no familiarity. “No?”
“She works with me in the shop. Jackie’s Velma’s little sister.”
I grit my teeth. “I do know Velma. Her and Grazie are… interesting.”
Marcus chuckles. “Yeah, they can be a handful. Jackie ain't like that, though. She’s nice.”
I give him a questioning look. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because you’re new here and I can tell you’s looking for friends. Am I right?”
Ok this guy’s growing on me. First he offers to take me home, now he’s taken interest in helping me fit in.
“Y-Yeah. I’m not too good at finding friends. Thank you.”
“No problem.” We turn the block and start walking down my street. “So what’s your plans for after school?”
I don’t wanna lie, but I feel that my planned career will make him feel embarrassed.
“Um, I’m looking into being a professor of anatomy.”
Marcus’ head swings to look at me with wild eyes. Here it comes. Go ahead, make fun of the weird, nerdy outcast newcomer-
“That’s amazing!”
What?
I stare at him. “You’re not upset?”
Balkan repeatedly shakes his head, still smiling. “Why would I be? That’s a top-notch job! You must be one smart cookie, Lottie!”
I slowly realize that my brain isn’t going to get me mocked. “Thank you! Normally people hear that and think it’s crazy for a woman to be teaching at a university.” I bite my lip. “That’s- that’s actually part of the rumors I had back in Brooklyn. The girls used to say I was less feminine for wanting to take up a man’s job.”
Balkan stops walking and puts a hand on my shoulder. Earlier my instincts would’ve been to kick his crotch and run, but now I’m not afraid anymore.
“Those bitches don’t know what they’re saying. They’s jealous because you’s smarter than them, Lottie. Being smart don’t mean you’s less feminine. In fact, lots-a guys admire a goil with brains.” A smile grows on his face. “I know ‘cause I’m one-a them.”
Oh God. Steady, Lottie. But it’s no use. The walls I’ve built to keep people out are cracking. How has this man been able to make me feel special when he literally just met me?
“Who are you, Marcus Jackson?” I whisper. “You show up chasing a coin, a complete stranger. And now you treat me like an actual person.” My body reacts by giving him a soft hug, one that Marcus accepts gently.
“You’s a real nice goil, Lottie. Anyone should treat you like one.” I hear him sigh. “I’m probably gonna get killed for this.”  Before I can ask Marcus pulls away and looks down at me with soft eyes. “Lottie, would you maybe wanna go out with me sometime? It don’t have to be much, just- Maybe as friends?”
It’s a good thing Marcus is still holding me because if he wasn’t I’d be crumbling to the floor.
“You mean that? An actual date?” I can’t hide my excitement. “No one’s ever asked before. Are you sure?”
The Jet boy’s eyes widen. “Yes! Yes, a thousand times yes!”
Through my sudden happiness I feel tears beginning to form. “I’d luv to, Marcus. But first-” I give a small laugh. “You should probably meet my parents first.”
He doesn’t even flinch. “Absolutely!”
“Good! Because… This is me.” I point to the door of the small house we’re standing in front of.
“Nice place,” the Jet compliments.
“Thank you. Would you like to come in? Dad won’t be home for another hour but I can ask if you can stay for dinner.”
Marcus looks as if I’d just offered him a million dollars. “Um, yeah! I mean, if it’s alright with your folks- Am I dressed well enough?”
I can’t help but laugh at his adorable statement. “You’re fine, Marcus.” Taking his hand, I lead him to the front door and lead him deeper into my life.
“Mother! I’m home! I brought some company.”
“Hello, dear!” Mother comes bustling from the kitchen. When she sees Balkan she freezes and her eyes narrow. “Lottie, who is this man?” she asks in a stern voice.
I give Marcus’ hand a squeeze. “Mother, this is Marcus. He walked me home from work.”
The Jet sets himself in a respectful stance. “Good evening, ma’am. I just wanted to make sure your daughter got home safe. I meant no disrespect.”
“Could he stay for dinner?” I ask hopefully.
Mother stews over my words with a conflicted expression. “Could I talk with you for a moment? Your friend can wait outside.”
That’s not exactly a no. Balkan doesn’t seem to mind because he gives a nod and walks back out without question. Once he’s gone, mother rushes over to put her hands on my shoulders.
“Sweetie, I am so happy you are trying to socialize. But is that boy the kind of crowd you think is right to be around?”
My confidence doesn’t slip. “I didn’t trust him either, but Marcus is a good man even if he is part of the Jets. You know how hard I’ve had it trying to find friends, mom. Well, Marcus and I are both starting with a clean slate. He’s not like the criminals dad deals with.”
Mother lets out a deep sigh. “Your father may not be happy at first.”
“I know. But please at least let him stay for dinner? Give him a chance for you to warm up to him.”
I think my goose is cooked. My parents have always been strict, and someone like Balkan isn’t exactly the prime example of dinner company-
“Very well, he can stay.” Mother’s worried look changes to a smile. “We’ve raised you well enough to have good judgment. I’m sure this young man is quite catching enough for you to bring him home. You’re growing up so fast, Lottie!” She gives me one last squeeze. “Alright, let him in.”
Feeling full of giddy hope I rush back to the door and open it to find an anxious-looking Balkan.
“My mother passed her blessing for you to join us! Come right in.”
Marcus looks like I just hung the moon. “O-Ok!”
I show him to the dining room and we both help set the table. Mother keeps a watchful eye as she brings out dishes of chicken and potatoes, but relaxes after she starts to see Marcus isn’t a threat.
“We usually eat before dad gets home,” I explain as we sit down. “Sometimes he gets overbooked with paperwork and doesn’t want us waiting too long.” I lean in and whisper: “You’ve met my mom, now you just need to survive my dad.”
Balkan’s face freezes in a look of new-found terror, but mother just laughs.
“I’ll talk him into it,” she assures. “Your father may be the head of the house, but the mother is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants.”
Marcus and I grab hands under the table, and for once in my life I’m glad we moved from Brooklyn. This new start is refreshing for both me and Marcus, one that I hope will lead to something special.
(Sneaked in a My Big Fat Greek Wedding reference!)
Chapter 4: Getting Good at Waiting
I woke up to find myself alone. The sunlight poured in through my window, causing me to roll away.  I had almost convinced myself that last night was a dream, the way his hands felt on my body, the way our tongues danced together. It was too perfect to be real, or at least that’s what I thought until I was face to face with my mirror. My hands instinctively went to touch the dark mark on my neck, it was real but he was gone. Boy am I stupid.
“That’s it, Maggie,” I scolded myself, “sleep with the gang leader you just met, that’ll work out fine.” I can’t believe how stupid I was. I quickly get dressed, tossing my hair into a ponytail before turning to look at the bed, hands on my hips. I exhaled, taking in the sight of tangled sheets and disheveled pillows. I wonder when he left.
“Margaret!” Jo’s voice quickly pulled me out of my thoughts. I leave my room, closed the door behind me, and made my way over to where she stood by the stove. “I made you eggs.”
“That’s nice,” I say eyeing Jo suspiciously, “What do you want?”
She lets out a gasp “What do you mean? I’m just being nice.” She transfers the egg onto a plate smoothly, without making eye contact.
“Well then thank you,” I smirk slightly before grabbing the plate and going to sit at the table.
“I was thinking though,” I try not to laugh at Jo’s words - there's always something with her. She quickly joined me at the table, “there’s this dance.”
I nod slightly, beginning to eat my egg, “Let me guess, you want Mr. Wonderful from last night to take you.”
“Yes!” she exclaimed loudly, causing me to smile over at her, “Well actually he already asked, and I already said yes,” Her voice trailed off at the end, looking down at the table.
“Well,” I started, “If you already said yes,”
“Oh my god!” Jo shrieked making me jump, as she threw her arms around me. “Thank you thank you thank you!” I laughed as she jumped around our small kitchen. I finished my breakfast to the sound of Jo rambling about what to wear later until I managed to usher her out of the apartment.
We walked the 3 blocks it was to the subway station, and I waved her off like usual as she hopped on to get to school. It was unseasonably cold this morning and I couldn’t help but shiver as I walked back up to the top of the stairs.
“So I guess I was too late to catch ya this mornin’,” I looked over my shoulder to see where the voice came from and saw Riff. Looking as casual as ever, leaning on the stairway railing with a smoke in hand. “Or do ya always wake up so early?”
I scoffed, “Well someone’s gotta make sure Jo gets to school. Besides clearly you were in a rush to get out of there” I continued walking a few more steps before turning back towards him, he looked a little stunned at my words. “So are you coming or what?” I asked laughing slightly as he caught up quickly.
“I uh really thought I’d be back before ya woke,” I heard him mumble beside me, his hand went up to rub the back of his neck. “I had some business to take care of last night.”
“I get it,” letting a smirk appear on my face and nodding slightly, I continued to look at the ground as I spoke, “I’m sure being a juvenile delinquent is harder than it looks.”
He chuckled quietly, “Well it definitely has its perks,” he hopped in front of me, stopping me from walking. Smiling down at me, his blue eyes glistening in the sunlight, “I’m always free to walk ya round, girly girl.” He slid an arm around my waist pulling me into him.
“I can’t exactly walk like this,” I say looking up at him, feeling my cheeks redden at our proximity. Leaning down slightly, I watched as his gaze left my eyes and were now looking at where my hair rested on my neck. He slowly moved his hand up to my neck, brushing the hair over my shoulder with his fingertips, I watched a smirk appear as he noticed the hickey he gave me.
“Ya shouldn’t cover this up,” his fingers began to trace the mark lightly before he leaned down to whisper in my ear, “how am I supposed to show the fellas you’re my girl?” My breath hitched at his words before I found my confidence again, pushing him off me lightly.
“Who said I’m your girl?” I smirked up at him, moving around him quickly to continue the walk. I heard him laugh from behind me before he pulled me back into his chest so fast that I almost fell over in the process.
“I say, doll,” He smirked down at me again and I could feel the butterflies in my stomach. “You ain’t gettin’ rid of me that fast. Not after last night.” My face got hot at his words and I looked down at the ground. He pulled my face up to look at his, not letting me avert my gaze again.
We stayed like that for what felt like an eternity until I felt something bump into us both. Riff whipped his head around to see some paperboy riding his bike away, faster than I’d ever seen before. I could tell he was going to yell something, so I put my hands upon his chest, grabbing his shirt, and pulling his attention back to me.
“It’s some kid,” I said looking at his stern face melt slightly at my words, “I’m sure he didn’t mean it.” He nodded lightly, looking back in the kid’s direction to see that he was no longer in view, taking a long drag of his smoke before exhaling. I laughed, causing him to raise an eyebrow at me, “Are you always like this?”
“Like what?”
“Ready to punch someone at all times?” I asked laughing again, causing him to smile back at me.
“Well if a pretty girl is involved, I can’t help it,” His grip on me tightened lightly, “besides I didn’t hit anybody.” His expression changed momentarily and his blue eyes began to search my green ones. “Don’t wanna scare ya off too early, do I?”
“I don’t scare easy,” I said almost surprising myself at the response. I smiled up at him, “You’re going to make me late for work.”
He scoffed in response, “How abouts ya stay with me instead, I'll show ya the city.”
“As tempting as that is,” I say letting out a soft groan, “I have to go.” I pushed him lightly again and he nodded, reaching down to grab my hand before walking us off in the direction of my work.
—----------------------------------------------------
“Have you been here all day?” I asked with a smile, noticing Riff waiting for me outside of the building. He pretended to look offended before he offered me his arm, which I gladly took. I couldn’t help but notice the looks we got from people as we made our way through the city. “Do people always stare at you?”
“Not at me babe,” He said smirking, “they’re all lookin’ at you.” I took in his words. Looking around us on the street, I noticed he was right, they were all staring at me and avoiding Riff’s gaze completely.
“You have quite the effect on people.” He let out a laugh and shook his head lightly. I continued to watch as Riff kept his eyes focused in front of him, people dodged out of our way. I could definitely get used to this.
“So what’s the plan tonight girly girl?” He asked as we approached the apartment, “Are ya in need of an escort again?”
“I wouldn’t get your hopes up, Jo has plans,” I respond stopping in front of the building and turning to face him, watching him nod slightly at my words, “I’ll be in for the night.”
A smirk returned to his face, “So I guess you wouldn’t mind some company later?”
“We’ll see,” I said walking away back towards the door. He eyed me up and down and I watched as he placed his hands on his hips.
“You’re not going to make this easy for me are ya, doll?”
I laughed lightly, “You’ll have to wait and see.” I turn around, unlocking the door smoothly with my key.
“See that’s the problem,” he called out after me, “I’ve never been too good at the waitin’ part.”
I turned around smiling at him, “There’s plenty of time to get good at that,” I blew a kiss before entering the apartment and watched as he shook his head at me, still smirking while I closed the door.
riff as your boyfriend hc's
nav. | m.list
requested by anon: hi !! you’re like the only person on this app who writes for riff. so i was wondering, if you’re still writing for him and you write hcs, if i could get like a riff as ur boyfriend hcs??
word count: 0.5k
a/n: i wrote this so quick lol, i hope it's okay? i went for gender neutral reader as you didn't specify what you'd like, i hope it still works. oh also, i'm sorry about the ending, i know i strayed away from the topic a little, but maybe this is fine??
pairings: riff lorton x gn!reader
warnings: none? woah is this maturity
Tumblr media
even before you and riff were dating, the jets (especially riff) were super protective of you
and once you two start going steady, they only get MORE protective
riff used to make sure a jet would walk you home if he couldn’t make it
but after you two start dating, it’s always him there, 9 times out of 10
riff tried his hardest to keep you out of the sharks vs. jets rivalry, he couldn’t stand the thought of something happening to you
and this idiot thought the best way to go about this was to not tell you ANYTHING at all
you had a series of long fights about him disappearing on you randomly, or blowing you off, leaving you to wonder about which ditch he was lying dead in
you lose track of the amount of times you have to show up to val’s, interrogating poor tony about the whereabouts of his best friend
(tony always gives in, you’re fucking scary when you want to be)
the two of you eventually sort things out, staying up all night talking and making up
riff promises to talk to you more, though he knows you’d prefer it if he wasn’t a part of this feud at all
but hey, at least it’s progress
riff always takes you as his date to the dances, no question
and if you don’t know how to dance, he will take the time to teach you properly
low-key, you took longer than necessary to learn
the lessons were so much fun, and the time together made both of you genuinely happy
riff definitely wasn’t complaining about being able to put his hands on you ;)
one of his favourite things to do is watch you get ready
not in a creepy way, though he can’t argue that watching you change your shirt is sometimes the highlight of his day (he can’t help it)
but your meticulous routine is something just so calming to him, it’s a nice change of pace
he swears that he falls deeper in love every time your eyes meet in the mirror, and you give him that sheepish smile
another thing riff loves is playing with your hair
when you’re exhausted, he’ll gently drag you down to lie in his lap, fingers already threading through your locks
you’re asleep in seconds
you and riff don’t go on too many dates, maybe one every fortnight
but that’s okay, because riff comes around your place almost everyday
and if he can’t, he’ll ensure that he at least drops by during one of your breaks at work
even those fifteen minutes of talking are precious to both of you
the two of you love meddling with tony’s love life and pissing him off
you’re always organising double dates to go on
which, to be fair, does not end well for tony, so it’s a little counter-productive
the girl usually gets pissed that he doesn’t pay her the same attention that riff does you
which leaves tony a little baffled
how is he supposed to replicate your relationship with riff? how is anyone?
secretly, tony’s rooting for you guys to get married. so much so that he’s already started his best man’s speech.
he can’t wait for the day he gets to say the words out loud.
