I felt so much guilt. Maybe it was the way that the muscular boy in front of me gazed into my eyes. His chocolate brown iris’ melted into mine as he gazed at me with concern.
It was no secret that Jacob was infatuated with me, hell, even Rosalie brought it to my attention a couple times. My heart always cracked a little each time I’d turn him away.
“I’m fine, Jake. It’s just a little cut.” I reassure him. My attempt at dispelling his fear was void. He gripped the cloth at my wound, which was oozing with crimson horror.
“If you’re really that concerned, take me to Carlisle. He’ll h-“ “Are you kidding me?” The werewolf cut me off.
“I’m not taking you to those freaks! They’ll drain you dry.” He exclaimed, eyebrows furrowing.
“You know they aren’t like that, Jacob.” I attempt to stay calm. Edward and Jacob have always been at odds, so convinced that the other is this monster whose only purpose is to cause me harm.
“Bells… if you think what you need right now is a… blood sucker… I will take you. But I want you to know that I am not leaving your side.” He said slowly, and I nodded, absorbing every word.
Jacob was silent the whole ride over to the Cullens. I could tell he was angry by the way he clenched his jaw, the way his knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel with vigor.
Believe it or not, I really had no intention of stressing Jacob out. It was my decision to want to go to the Cullens. Even though Jake is insecure about my previous relationship with Edward, Edward isn’t really the person he should worry about. We ended things about a month ago… for the better of course.
The tall vampire stood outside his modern home as we pulled up, almost as if he knew we were on our way. I cautiously open the car door, and get out of the vehicle. The cloth that was wrapped around my wound squelched with every press of the fabric, crimson liquid daring to seep out of the fibers. I gave Edward a questioning look as I held the cloth to my torn skin.
Golden eyes danced between Jacob and I, he didn’t know which look to address first. “Alice…” he mumbled, revealing that the petite vampire had a premonition of my little accident. Great… someone else had to witness that.
The door swung open, revealing a certain pale, blond, vampire doctor that had recently been the main character of all my dreams. My heart leapt in my chest at the sight of him. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing the veins that ran up his forearm.
Flashbacks of last night’s dream came crashing down on me. My eyes clouded as I remembered gazing at Carlisle, his toned body on top of mine. I knew this Carlisle was merely a figment of my own imagination, but damn it felt good to even picture it. To hear him say my name over and over again.
Bella… Bella… “Bella!”
Jacob exclaimed, shaking my shoulders, forcing me to exit my dazed state. “God damn!” He yelled in relief as I finally responded to his attempts to bring me back to reality. I took a look around me. We’re inside now? “Okay, Jacob. I think it’s time to give Bella some space and let me take a look at this wound here.” Carlisle said softly, his velvety voice made me slowly melt.
“I’m not leaving her alone!” Jacob retaliated. God, can he shut up. “I’m fine, Jake.”
It was sweet of Jacob to be so concerned but I really was not in danger. Especially not with Carlisle.
Jacob glared at me, flickering his gaze to Carlisle before turning around and slamming the door. I sighed at his discourteousness. “I’m sorry about him… he’s just…” I begin to apologize to the wise man before me.
“Territorial.. almost like a wolf.” He finishes my sentence with a light hearted chuckle before continuing. “It’s quite alright Bella… Let's see what we have here.” He said, carefully removing the red stained cloth.
“Do you mind sharing what happened?” He asked softly.
“I was out in the woods with Jake… I… slipped on some rocks.” I say, struggling to make out the words under the pressure of his gorgeous honey eyes boring holes into my entire being.
“Good thing is, I don’t think you’ll need stitches. Just a couple bandages and you should be on your way.” He said with a small smile, eyes trailing off. “I noticed some blood on your shirt… do you have another wound?”
I did.
“Oh.. It’s probably nothing.” I laughed nervously.
“Come on, Bella. If you’re injured, I need to take a look.” He said somewhat sternly. The tone of his voice sent shivers up my spine.
My hands shakily removed my top, pulling it over my head to reveal more skin. Goosebumps rose against the surface of my bare arms and stomach as my upper body now merely wore a bra.
My arms wrapped around my body as he gazed down at me.
“Bella, I am a doctor. There is so need to be ashamed.” He coaxed, slowly easing my arms away from my body. The wire of my bra painfully clamped over the wound.
Carlisle’s large hands came up, cautiously hovering around my back. “May I?”
I nodded, maybe a little too eagerly. One hand alone unclasped the 3 hooks in the back and the padded material fell to my lap. My exposed nipples harden immediately at the touch of the cool air.
A small breath escaped my lungs as I was now topless in front of the eldest vampire.
He’s a doctor, Bella. There’s no other reason for him to be doing this. But here, half exposed in front of him just felt so right… even if it wasn’t.
The large man slowly dropped to his knees. I shifted uncomfortably on the table as his fingertips softly grazed the underside of my right breast, examining the small gash underneath.
My skin blazed with a trail of passion where he touched me as he lightly circled the wound with his pointer finger. His other large hand came up to rest on my hip.
“Hmm… doesn’t look too deep.” He almost whispered, yellow eyes peering up at me from his kneeling position on the ground.
His honey eyes dropped from my gaze, right down to my breasts as if he were taking in every detail. The vampire’s throat bobbed as he gulped before swiftly standing up and breaking eye contact with my exposed bosom.
It didn’t take long for me to notice the peculiar sight in front of me. The growing tent in his trousers, an ironically human feature, was quite eye-catching.
“Let’s get you cleaned up,” he said quickly as to avoid any awkward silences. I nodded as he returned to his kneeling position.
“I hear things didn’t work out between you and Edward.” He diverted, grabbing a warm, damp cloth to gently swipe it over the torn area of skin. The motion stung the wound and I found myself biting my bottom lip to keep from hissing out. Carlisle continued to steadily sterilize the wound.
“Edward’s a good guy,” I say, not daring to move my eyes as I studied his every move. “It’s just better this way.”
He raises his eyebrow as his free hand digs into my hip. “Well what else would you need from a man?”
I scoff at him, only taking my eyes off of him to roll them sarcastically. “Uhh, I think there’s a lot more on my checklist than just being a nice person.”
Carlisle chuckled as if he found amusement from my discomfort. “I can understand that,” He said, grabbing a bandage and ripping the paper cover on it. He strategically placed it over the gash. “Besides, I’m not one to talk about relationships with the state my marriage is in.”
My eyebrows knitted together in confusion as he rose to his feet once again. “What do you mean?” I ask him, to which a solemn smirk spread across his lips.
“I think you know, Bella.”
Why would I know? If I knew then I wouldn't ask…
Sensing the confusion still displayed on my features, Carlisle sighs. “My wife is many things, but she is not clueless.” He stated, inching toward me agonizingly slowly.
“She’s not dumb.” He moves his body closer to mine until the tent in his pants pushed against my clothed core, achingly.
He leaned down, so close. His face was inches from mine. “She knows that something…someone… has been on my mind… and I just can’t seem to get them out.” He whispered. I could smell the fresh mintiness of his breath as he dipped in ever so slowly, planting a sweet kiss on my lips.
The embrace was warm and slow at first. Our lips moved in perfect synchronization. I could feel the cravings deep within my soul being satisfied as his tongue darted out to deepen the kiss.
I could feel his icy hands making their way to the hem of my pants, fingers dancing around the edge. His two digits dipped down below the fabric of my pants and panties, making immediate contact with my aching heat, a significant contrast to the chill of his skin.
Carlisle seemed to swallow my soft moans as he slowly rubbed me from inside my clothes.
A wince left my vacant mouth as the vampire pulled away, trailing his mouth down my neck and collarbones, right to my breasts.
He took one in his mouth right away, working his tongue around the pebbled skin as he kneaded the other with his free hand.
Ecstasy overcame my body as more pleasure was being delivered to me than I thought was humanly possible.
Better than Edward for sure.
Carlisle removed his mouth from my chest, trailing his sloppy kisses down my stomach. Removing his hands from my arousal, he swiftly yanked my pants and panties down in one go, returning to his knees for the third time tonight.
My knees were propped up, resting on the older man’s muscular shoulders. His face was so close to my entrance; I could feel his breath fanning on my glistening folds as he eyed me carefully. His tongue darted out, licking a stripe up my blazing heat. I almost cried out in agony, barely stopping to remember that there were vampires and a werewolf outside with advanced hearing.
Carlisle chuckled against my swollen core, sending vibrations swirling around my body in the most delicious way as his mouth began to attack my tender flesh.
His tongue expertly lapped at my clit and I struggled to contain the sounds that were persistently spilling from my lips. The tension burned deep within my stomach as I tensed up, never wanting this feeling to stop.
Carlisle’s face was buried between my legs as my heat began to spasm, becoming overridden with pleasure. One hand tangled in Carlisle’s straight, blond hair as the other came up to clamp my mouth shut while I road out my high, Carlisle’s tongue eagerly lapping at the liquid that oozed out of me.
His mouth finished cleaning me off as I lay on the flat surface, chest still heaving.
I shot straight up as a sturdy knock sounded at the door. “What’s taking so long in there?” Jake yelled through the wooden barrier. Carlisle handed me my clothes and I swiftly slipped them on just in time before Jacob barged through.
I was fully aware of the blush on my face, the redness of my lips.
“She’ll be fine. Nothing major.” Carlisle said, glancing at me, before exiting the room we committed those acts in just moments ago.
What the hell just happened?

“What on earth are you staring at?” Val asked me with a concerned look on her face. I snap out of my trance with a ‘huh?’
“You were staring at the door with that look of impending doom.”
“Oh.. um,” I start, trying to think of any other excuse I could give as to why I was staring off into space with a frown on my face. “I was jus-“ Fortunately for me, I didn’t have to think of an excuse; not that Val would buy it anyway. Riff and Diesel come walking through Doc’s.
“What do you want?” Val asks them, narrowing her eyes.
This is awkward. This is very awkward.
“Hey princess.” Diesel says with a wink, ignoring Val. Normally it would be cute, but somehow the nickname made my insides turn. “Hey,” I said awkwardly, giving a small smile. If I’m being honest, I totally forgot about Diesel. Sure the dance was fun with him and all, but I don’t really know if I’m all that interested anymore.
My eyes flicker to Riff, who doesn’t even acknowledge my presence. “We’re here for Tony.” He says.
Valentina sighed. “I told you to leave him alone. Tony is trying to better himself. It’s time you do the same, Ri-“ “I didn’t come here for this, I came here for Tony.” He interrupts. His voice is strict. Riff picks a toothpick from the shaker on the counter and inserts it into his mouth. Jeez what is his problem today?
“I’ll go get ‘em.” Diesel signs, disappearing into the basement. Valentina chases after him, “Ay, you’re not allowed down there.” She says, her voice fades away as she enters the basement.
I shuffle awkwardly as Riff stands in silence. “Hi,” I say, breaking the uncomfortable silence that was in the room.
“What’s up, kid.” He said nonchalantly, not daring to look at me. My face burned. Kid? That’s what you call the person who sucked your dick only a night ago without even kissing you? If you’re wondering what happened last night when he came over again, he didn’t. He simply didn’t show up. Now he’s calling me kid? Leave it to me to do something intimate with a literal gang leader, only for him to like never talk to me again.
“I thought you were coming over last night,” I said quietly. He kept playing with the toothpick in his mouth so I went on. “You sa-“ “I dunno what ya want me to do, Lily.” He said, sternly.
I stood up from my stool. “I want you to talk to talk to me!” I say, whisper-shouting. He turns away again. “Why won’t you just talk to me?” I say quietly, my voice breaking a bit. My eyes stung with shame, welling up.
“I’m talking to ya right now, kid.” He said, head still facing another direction.
“I’m right here. Why won’t you even look at me or have a normal conversation with me?” I whisper.
“I really don’t got nothin‘ to say to ya, Lilianna. We ain’t dating.” If he wants to play like that, so can I.
“Don’t come to my window anymore.” I say with anger and hurt in my tone. I rush upstairs before the tears spill, not that he would actually care to look at me and see them anyway.
———
I felt bad for Val, of course. I didn’t come out for the rest of the day. She must have known it was Riff, though. Val always knows.
I stayed curled up in my bed. A small fraction of my innocence just…. Gone.
A small knock on my window drew my attention away. My heart filled with joy. Despite what I told Riff earlier, I’d actually been hopeful that he would show up again.
I rushed over to the blurry window and unlatched it, however it was not Riff. It was Diesel.
“Hey,” he said, entering through the window. “I came to ask ya somethin’” he said cheerfully. I faked a smile, hoping he wouldn’t see through me. He couldn’t; I didn’t even really know the guy that well.
“What’s up?” I ask.
“So when I came up from the basement, you disappeared. What happened?” He asked. My heart leapt in my chest. Was it that obvious that we were having a moment up there? “Uhh, I don’t know.. I guess I just wanted to go upstairs for a bit. Why do you ask?” I said, slightly stammering. He pondered for a bit before speaking.
“Ahh it’s probably nothin’. I came up and the guy seemed… off.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I don’t wanna assume nothin’ but he seemed like he was on the verge a’ tears. An’ that ain’t like Riff, y’know?”
I nod slowly. Verge of tears? That’s some bullshit. Did he send Diesel here to try and make me feel bad? He wouldn’t. So maybe he was actually about to cry. It doesn’t change the fact that he was literally such an asshole today.
Despite what happened today, my heart really did ache for him. I so desperately wanted to press my cheek against his chest and go to sleep again. It all seemed like so long ago that I was able to do so.
“I also came to ask ya something else.” He said nervously. Oh no…
“Would you be up for another dance tomorrow? Some of the gang will be there and I think it’ll be a good time.” He said, meekly. Jesus, how many dances does this place have?
I sighed. “Listen Diesel,” “We can just go as friends.” He interrupts quickly, a rosy blush spreading on his face. “I’m usually pretty good at telling when a girl ain’t into it. The gang’s cooled down now too, so ya don’t gotta worry about that.”
I smile at him, “Then that sounds lovely. I’m in.”
His eyes light up in excitement. “I’ll pick ya up same time as last time. Goodnight Lily.” He said, kissing my cheek. I wished him a ‘goodnight’ as he exited back out through the window.
My sleep was troubled that night. How could someone who acted like they adored me, just turn their back the day after doing something intimate.
———
“Val! Do you know where I put my silver earrings?“ I called down to Valentina. Diesel would be here any moment and I still don’t have my jewelry ready yet.
I catch sight of myself in the mirror and twirl my red dress at the sight of myself. “Si, amor,” Valentina answered my previous question, coming up the stairs to deliver me the earrings.
She gasped when she saw me. “You look beautiful as always.” She said affectionately as she handed me the earrings.
I gently slipped them on.
“Perfect.”
Diesel arrived not too long after, clad in a grey suit and tie. We arrived to the dance without Tony tonight. He and Maria decided to go for milkshakes before stopping by the dance.
“Ya wanna dance? I promise there won’t be any gunshots.” Diesel asked, chuckling. I can’t promise.
I smile at him and grab his hand. He wraps me in a tight position as we slowly dance to the sentimental music. Diesel’s hands tightly wrapped around my waist.
If I was being totally honest, I couldn’t help but wish they were Riff’s hands. That he was Riff, and he was coming to tell me he felt the same. But that wouldn’t happen.
It didn’t take too long to spot Riff in the crowd of dancers. It was who I spotted him with that caused bile to rise up to my throat. Was he dating her the entire time when I was in my attic, obliviously sucking him off? Was he with her when he told me I was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen? When I slept peacefully on his chest?
Riff seemed to notice me too, and the anxious look on my face. His gaze was empty, void of any emotions.
“Ya seem distracted,” Diesel says, his thumb rubbing soft circles around my hip. Oh god. No matter how light-hearted the action was, it made my skin crawl a bit. I snap my attention back to him. “Let’s try this again,” he said with a small smirk. No. “I thought we were here as friends…” I tell him as he leans in close to me. His face was so close and my heart leapt in my chest. “Diesel stop,” I whisper, but he doesn’t budge. “Please Lily. Ever since I saw ya I’ve been dyin’ to kiss ya.” Out of the corner of my eye, I see Riff storm out of the gym. I back away from Diesel. A ‘WTF’ look was written on my face and I leave, immediately going outside to follow Riff.
“Riff!” I call. The light from the sunset blinds me as I quickly run down the school steps. The boy turns around, a defeated look on his face. “Ya were right y’know.” He said quietly. I didn’t answer, waiting for him to continue.
“I shoulda talked to ya. I dont even know why I did it. I couldn’t bear to hurt ya anymore- Seeing ya kiss him-“ he stuttered, stopping before a loud sob/ breath escaped his lips.
“Woah, woah, Diesel and I never kissed,” I whisper, inching toward him.
“What do you mean hurt me?” I asked softly.
“Ya got so much ahead… and I’m just a street boy slowly losing my territory. I’m only gonna drag ya down, Lils.” He choked out. Tears pricked my eyes. “Graziella made sure I was aware a’ that. Told me I’d ruin yer innocence, being so infatuated with ya the way that I am. Didn’t take me long to realize I was already starting to.” He said softly, reaching up to cup my cheek.
I smiled softly. “You’re not ruining my innocence Riff. Do you really think I want to stay a virgin forever?” I asked with humor lacing my tone.
“Yer the only thing I need.” He whispered.
The bright glow of the sunset lit up his face, and mine. His blue eyes shine bright, that little patch of brown turning honey in the sunset.
Riff quickly pressed his lips to mine, engulfing us both in a sweet state of bliss. A content sigh left my mouth as our mouths worked together in perfect unison.

I decided to sleep in some more, after all, I didn’t have work and I kinda wanted to continue my dream, that included some details about last night… maybe even some extras. I screwed my eyes shut, trying to wipe the grin off my face. A loud bang to my attic door forced my eyes open.
“Lily, are ya’ awake and decent?” Asked Tony from the other side of the door. Part of me wanted to pretend to be asleep but he probably would barge in anyway. “Yeah, what’s up?”
“Wanna go get a milkshake at Cubby’s?”
Ok, a milkshake doesn’t sound too bad right about now…
“Yeah, sure. Give me a couple minutes to get ready.” I called out to him and quickly sprinted to my bathroom.
The outfit I chose was a simple black top with some shorts. My hair was styled in a high ponytail and I didn’t bother to apply any makeup to my face.
I walked downstairs as Tony looked at me with a sheepish grin. “What?” I asked defensively, to which he also puts his hands up in defense. “Nothin’, nothin’.”
We exit Docs with an awkward tension in the air. I feel Tony stealing glances at me from time to time, lips still pressed into that stupid smile. I turn to him, annoyed. “Tell me what’s going on, Tony.” I snap. He starts to laugh and my face burns bright red. “How about ya tell me what going on instead… either you was watching a movie with someone that sounds exactly like Riff, or the guy was in yer room last night.”
My face flushes with embarrassment. He continues, “God that's so weird to think my best guy friend and my best girl friend sleeping togetha’.”
I nearly choke at his words. “We did not sleep together!” Tony raises his eyebrow at me.
“I mean we slept… But that's all we did.”
“But why?”
“That’s a great question, Tone.” I say, cracking a genuine smile. “I know Val tells me that he’s dangerous and I should stay away but… when I’m with him, I-“ “feel like you’re falling?” He interrupts and I softly nod.
“We haven’t done anything yet… not even kissed and somehow I just feel this.. connection to him. But I’m half Puerto Rican and he’s a jet and- I don’t know where to go from here.” I confess and Tony slightly smiles. “How ‘bout I introduce ya’ to Maria? She’ll tell ya all about it.” He laughed and I found myself laughing along. “Look,” he continues. “I may not know what’s goin’ on in Riff’s brain 24/7, but I do know that he is absolutely smitten with ya. Known it from the first day ya met.” He says rather proudly.
Tony and I enter the restaurant and take a seat at a free table. “Hey Lily,” Tony starts and I hum in response, still looking over the choices of milkshake flavors. “How come I’ve lived here all my life, yet I’ve never really met you before all this?” He asked softly.
“Well… my family lived in an apartment in the same building as Valentina,” I explain. Neither the jets or the sharks went there. While I was able to see Tony or Riff from afar, they never saw me.
I continue,”When my parents died, I moved in with her. And then when tío Doc passed, things would get a little hectic so I volunteered to move in at Doc’s… which exposed me to all sorts of… trouble.” I say the last part teasingly.
“Do you remember ‘em? Yer parents?” Tony asked softly. “I was 7 so the memory comes and goes. I have one specific memory of my father and I. I was on his shoulders and I just remember laughing at the way eyes would look when he looked up at me.”
Images of my father, lovingly looking up at me flashed through my mind; eyes shining the same green color as my own.
A pretty waitress with short brown curls came over to take our order. “Hi! Welcome to Cubby’s, what can I get ya today?” She said with a bright smile on her face.
“I’ll get a chocolate shake.” Tony says. I look at the menu for the first time, instantly knowing what I want. “I’ll get a berry blast shake with extra whipped cream please.” I say and Tony starts laughing. “What?” I ask, defensively.
“Berry blast, huh? Make that two chocolate shakes.” A familiar voice taunts from behind me. Oh gosh. Riff motions for me to scoot over in the booth, taking a seat as I did so.
Tony meets him with a fist bump. “Yo what’s up man. Glad ya made it.” He invited Riff?
Riff turns his head to look at me but I keep my gaze straight in front of me. “Yeah me too, buddy boy. Had a great night. Only fitting to start off with a bang.” He says as his eyes burn holes into me.
Tony eyes us with humor in his gaze. The waitress comes back over with our shakes and I’m relieved that the focus between us 3 is now located elsewhere.
The woman hands me my drink and I immediately take the straw out and use it to spoon whipped cream into my mouth.
“Woahh. This is all going in here.” Tony whistles, pointing to his stomach. He begins to greedily slurp at the drink.
I swiftly twirl the red and white straw between my fingers as I continue to pick up a bit of whipped cream and plop it in my mouth, awkwardly lapping the cream off the straw. Riff’s eyes stayed glued to me, and I couldn’t help but notice he hadn’t touched his shake. His hand was in a tight fist that popped his veins out. My eyes slowly reached up to meet his. His jaw clenched, eyes stayed focus on my every move. He looks uncomfortable… or sick. What did I do now? “Are you okay?” I ask, softly.
He lightly nods and looks away after screwing his eyes shut for a few moments. A gnawing feeling built up in my lower stomach. Did I make him feel upset? He was fine a moment ago. My gaze dropped to my lap. What di- then I noticed it.
His trousers restricted his growing arousal as a tent formed in his crotch area. I avert my eyes quickly, but it’s too late. I watch as Riff smirks at me from the corner of my eye. A rosy blush spreads, confirming my embarrassment.
“Yo… María!” Tony calls, staring past us to the glass window. Great. Just great. “I’ll see ya guys later.” He said and rushed out the door, slapping a 20 dollar bill on the table. Well at least he covered for our bill too. I steadily sipped at my blue drink as Riff and I both stayed silent. He quickly gulped his down within a couple seconds.
“Can we go?“ I ask quietly. He nods and stands up from the booth, offering me a space to slide out. I pretended not to notice as Riff subtly covers his obvious erection, that he knows I saw.
The silence nearly swallowed me whole as we walked, shoulder to shoulder. I’ve never been in a situation where a boy has this type of reaction to me. It ignited a flame somewhere inside of me and tingled all the way down to my core.
I practically shoved Riff in my attic the second we got to Doc’s. I was particularly grateful that Valentina was in the basement at the moment. She didn’t have to witness him entering my room, trying to cover up what looked like a painful erection.
I pressed Riff up against the door, leaning closer with every passing second. I’ve never wanted him more. The desire, the hunger for him gnawed at my core, my lips, my most intimate areas.
“Lily,” he said, stopping me. He lightly grabbed my shoulders and pushed me back. What is he doing? Did he stop being attracted to me within the 24 hours we were last together? My face stung with shame and I walked away, taking a seat on the bed. My eyes met with the ground and they dared not to look up any more.
Riff rushed over to me, crouching right in front and cupping my face with his hands. He tilts my chin up to look at him. “I don’t want you to feel like you have to just because you saw.” He says softly. He doesn’t understand. I’ve never felt this way before. Fully consumed with desire for him. To taste him, feel him, smell him, see him, hear him.
He stands up straight now, ready to walk away, but I grab his hand. My face is eye level with his crotch.
My heart thuds in my chest. I’ve never done this before. What if I get it wrong? What if I can’t make him feel good? What if I’m just bad at everything all together.
My hand shakily comes up to palm Riff through his trousers. A groan comes from his throat. I look up for any sign of protest, but there weren’t any. Riff’s eyes were glued on me, filled with lust. He gives me a small nod. I continue to palm him through the trousers, small stifled groans unleashing here and there.
I trail my hands up, my fingers dancing around the waistband of his trousers. My heart pounds in my chest as I get bolder. I slowly dip my fingers below the waistband, slowly pushing my hand into the warmth underneath.
I wrap my fingers around his manhood and slowly start to pump him, still from inside his trousers. My eyes widened at the size. Woah, that’s big.
I was frightened to pull the trousers down, to see what was underneath.
My hands continued massaging the soft, warm skin. It moved easily, with each back and forth motion that I performed. Riff’s groans were louder now, he struggled to silence them, clenching his jaw every now and then.
It’s time. I slowly pull down the trousers, firstly revealing a patch of light blond, curly hair on his pubic bone. I go further, pulling his trousers down even more to reveal his throbbing erection. The veins showed his arousal even more as his hard dick pointed straight out, facing me.
“God you’re so beautiful,” he whispered, breathlessly.
I wrap my hand around the base of his dick and continue to pump faster now. His groans grow consistent and faster. Here goes nothing.
I take the soft pink head of his cock between my lips, slowly pushing him further and further into my mouth. The taste of his skin was satisfying, soothing every urge that previously told me to jump his bones. Every urge except one… my core throbbed and ached for him. Riff moaned, loud and vocal this time.
I broadened my tongue as I bobbed my head back and forth, brushing against the underside of his dick. Riff’s fingers played with the ponytail on my head.
“Lils… I-I’m about to finish. Ya don’t g-gotta swallow if ya don’t wanna.” He struggled to make out, but my mouth remained on him, sucking and licking to give him the pleasure he needed.
His breathing became irregular, quickening as he finished, spurting his hot liquid down my throat. I coughed, choking on the liquid as he fixed himself into his trousers and collapsed on the bed.
“God damn Lils. Where’d ya learn to do that?”
“Heard about it, I guess.”
The truth is, before moving into Docs, my friends would tell me all about their experiences with various different shark members. I’d always feel different from them, like I was the only one who hadn’t done those things… but hey, at least I picked up some experience for my firsts.
“Ya never done somethin’ like that before, have ya?” He asked softly and I shook my head.
“Well then I gue-“ “Lily!” Tony interrupted from downstairs. “Come down! I got a surprise for ya.”
“I’ll be right down!” I yell back, silently urging Riff to get up. He makes his way toward the window.
“Wait,” I call to him and he turns around to face me. “I’ll see you later?”
A bright smile pulls at the corners of his lips. “That you will, Lils.” He says and then disappears through the window.
I sigh, a small grin forming on my lips. What just happened?
I make my way downstairs to see what Tony has to show me. There he stands, smiling near the counter. As I get further downstairs, I see someone is with him. A pretty girl with a tan complexion and the prettiest thick black hair. Maria. I could tell why he was so smitten with her. She’s beautiful. “Lily,” Tony said giddily.
“This is Maria. Maria, this is Lily.”
Maria smiles brightly at me and I reciprocate. “Hi! I’ve heard so many great things about you!” She says. Her accent is strong and melodic. “I can say the same about you as well! Nice to meet you.” I say, complying as she extends for a hug.
Maria is lively, funny, smart, witty. As I talked to her, it seemed like she brought out the best in Tony. However I couldn’t say my mind was fully with the conversation. How could it be, with the lingering taste in my mouth and the new vivid memories that made my core ache and clench uncontrollably.

———
My fingers fiddled with my keys as I stood behind the counter. Tony held a broom in his hand firmly and swept the black tiles. The day was mostly silent, with an exception of the occasional sign from one of us. My eyes threatened to shut as I desperately fought sleep. The chime of the bell connected to the front door awoke my senses as I put on my automatic smile for our new customer.
The smile faltered a little when I realized who the customer was.
Grazi.
“Lilianna!!!” She exclaimed and I internally died. “Graziella!” I say, trying to show false enthusiasm, my eyes flickering between her and Tony.
“We came to see ya since we know ya got a job here and everything!” She says and I smile.
A pretty girl with bright blue eyes pushes her way past Graziella. “Hi! Nice to meet ya. I didn’t get to go to Cubby’s the other night so we never met. I’m Velma.” she says with a genuine smile. “I’m Lily.”
It’s good to know not all the Jet girls are like Grazi, who’s now giving Velma a menacing death glare.
“Anyway,” Graziella diverts. “I also stopped by because I wanted to buy snickers for my Riffy.” She says.
Tony pipes up from the back, “Riff hates snickers. Yer better off gettin’ a milky way.”
Grazi glanced at Tony, then back at me, quickly snatching up the milky way. She set the snickers bar down on the counter.
She turned to a girl on her right. “I can’t wait for tonight! I’m gonna have the time of my life, over, and over again.” She says, purposely making her voice louder and looking over at me. I do my best to smile, ignoring the pangs of jealousy that silently urge me to rip her face off.
“I wish you the best of luck with that, Grazi.”
She smiled a forced smile as I charged her for the Milky Way. “5 cents.”
She hands me the cash and makes her way to the door. “See ya’ round, Lily.”
Velma waves to me sympathetically as they all exit the store.
“Y’know, I’m really starting to understand everything you said about her.” I say to Tony, emitting a chuckle from him.
———
My window remained ajar that night.
I knew Riff would be spending the night with Grazi, “Having the best time of her life”, but part of me… longed for him. Longed for his touch again.
“Hola, Lils!” A booming voice exclaims, emitting a loud scream from my mouth.
“Jesus Christ, Riff, you nearly gave me a heart attack!” I scold and he laughs loudly. “What are you doing here? Aren't you… supposed to be with Graziella?” I ask, trying to ease the jealousy in my voice.
He looks at me with his eyebrows furrowed. “She tell ya that?” he asked. “When did ya see ‘er?”
“She came around here this morning talking about how she will have the time of her life with you,” I say, trying to read his expression. When he doesn’t respond, I continue. “She came in trying to buy you snickers. Tony had to tell her you hated them.”
He smiled, “That girl couldn't tell ya a thing about me.”
“Lily? Are ya okay? I heard a scream.” Tony called from downstairs.
My heart beats faster at the thought of Tony catching Riff in my room. “Yeah! Sorry, I saw a bug.”
The footsteps seemed to withdraw, thudding back down the basement stairs.
I stare down to the floor as he takes a seat next to me on my bed.
“Riff,” I start, looking up. Riff’s eyes are already glued to me, studying every feature on my face. My face heats up as his gaze remains on me. He hums in response.
“Why are you here?”
“Cuz I like spendin’ time with ya.”
“But Gra-” “Forget about Graziella.” He interrupts.
But I can't.. Images of Graziella and Riff passionately making out filled my mind. I hate the fact that he gets to do that but he ruined my first kiss.
“You ruined my first kiss.” I confronted him. “I know.”
Anger seethes through me. “You know? Are you kidding me? I literally get 1 night to experience this and you take it a-”
My words are silenced by Riff almost closing the gap between our faces. Once again, our lips were centimeters apart. My breath hitched as I tried to ignore the tingling sensation in my lips, as if they were drawn to his, aching for me to lean in and close the space between us completely. But I couldn’t do that as I was frozen in place.
This is wrong. He was supposed to be meeting with Graziella, but here he is with his face only centimeters away from mine. “Riff,” I say breathlessly. “I can’t do this knowing you’re with her.”
I turn my head to the side, resisting the urge to grab him and kiss him right there. He doesn’t say anything so I continue. “It’s wrong and I jus-“ “Lils,” he cuts me off. “The reason I called Grazi over, was so I could end things with ‘er.” He said, darting his tongue out to carefully wet his lips.
“Why?” Was all I managed to choke out.
“I realized that when I’m with ‘er, there’s always someone else on my mind.” He said, laying back on the bed and putting his feet up. I do the same, laying on my back, right next to him. Riff turns his face to look at me as I stare up at the ceiling. “God I’m in trouble.” He whispers, and I tilt my head to look at him, remaining silent. He continues,”Ya might just be the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, Lily girl.” He says, never raising his voice above a whisper. Once again, the heat rises to my cheeks. Does he really mean that? His eyes continue to examine me as I look away, trying to conceal the blush spreading on my face.
“Really?” I choke out. “Ya think I’d lie ‘bout that?” He says, a grin starting to form on his face at my reaction to his words. Even with all Grazi’s beauty, he still thinks that?
My eyes start to feel heavy and I stop fighting to keep them open. “Goodnight, pretty girl.” He whispers and I mumble out something, too tired to make sure my words formed a coherent ‘Goodnight’.
Riff gently pulls my arm, rolling my body on top of his. My head rests on his chest, taking comfort in the soft, rhythmic thumping of his heart. I finally feel at home.
———
The sun shines through my window, birds chirping away like a typical sunny Saturday morning.
My cheek pressed against the mattress as I yawned. My hand reached as I brushed my fingers along the sheets next to me. They were still warm.
I sit up and glance over at the window. Open.
My lips curl into a smile at the memories of my night with Riff. The fluttering feeling in my stomach returned from last night as I chuckled to myself in exhilaration.

———
My eyes fluttered open as the sun shone directly into them. The birds happily chirped outside. There was no trace of Riff ever being in my room.
I sat up as my eyes scanned the area. Nothing at all signified that Riff was ever in my bedroom. For all I know, it was a dream.
I got out of bed and began getting ready in the small bathroom in the attic.
I started to scrub away at my teeth, when suddenly I heard a familiar voice. Oh gosh he’s here now? My hands worked the toothbrush faster. “Lily! Ya got a visitor!”
No no no no…
I shamefully walked down the stairs with my hair in a messy bun, and a toothbrush in my mouth.
Riff stood at the front of the store, grinning at me. I groaned “Why now?”
“I’m here to carry out my end of the deal. It’s ice cream time.” He said with a smile on his face.”
My eyes flicker between him and Tony.
“What.. now?”
He nods. He’s acting completely normal right now. Maybe it was a dream. He doesn’t even look hungover.
“Give me a sec.” I say and run back upstairs.
I threw on a denim skirt and a cute white top that fits like a glove on my torso.
After a few moments of battling with myself, I decided on some light makeup. I carefully applied the concealer and mascara. I lightly swiped a rose pink gloss to my lips.
It didn’t take long to fully straighten my hair since it was already done yesterday.
I look at myself in the mirror and finish up before grabbing my bag and hurrying downstairs.
As I arrive downstairs, I can see Riff and Tony leaning over the counter. Riff has a Milky Way in hand and is happily munching on it.
They both turn to look at me. Riff’s eyes twinkle a bit and his lips curl into a grin. “C’mon Lils.” He says walking around the corner and extending his arm to me.
I take it and roll my eyes. “Didn‘t I tell you not to call me that?”
He chuckled as a response.
The feeling of my arm entangled with his reminds me of his warm hands cupping my face last night. The way his thumb caressed my cheekbone. The chill I felt as soon as his touch left me. Even if it wasn’t real, it just felt so… euphoric. Maybe I should just ask him. “Last n-“
“So how’s things goin’ wit’ ya and Diesel?” He asked, interrupting me. “Oh um… they’re fine. He’s a really sweet guy.”
He nods in agreement. “So what? Y’two are togetha’ now?”
“Uhh something like that, I guess.” Not really.
His face holds a foreign expression but quickly returns neutral.
“What?” I ask defensively.
“I don’t know whatcha talking about girly g-“
“What was that face for?” I interrupt.
“I ain’t make a face.” He says with a sly grin.
“Last night, you came to my room didn’t you?” I finally ask, free of interruption.
His breath hitches for a second but he remains stoic. “Again, I don’t know w-“ “Cut the bullshit, Riff.”
He sighs and I continue to question him.“You know, for someone who introduced me to your friend, you sure seem very opposed to us actually working out.”
“I don’t have friends. Jets are family.”
We arrived at the ice cream stand. I examine the board, looking at all the flavors I could possibly choose from.
“Welcome to Twisters. What can I get ya.” The lady in front said, her voice and face were free of any emotions.
“What’s ya favorite?” Riff asks.
“Berry blast.” I say proudly
Riff snorts at my answer and I scowl at him.
Riff playfully puts his hands up in defense at my reaction. “I ain’t saying it’s bad, I’m just saying why eat somethin’ that makes ya look like ya just drank a gallon of blue paint.”
My jaw playfully drops, as I feign offense taken by his words. “Well what’s your favorite?”
“Rocky road motha’ fucka’!” He exclaims a little too loudly, attracting the attention of a mom and her child. The woman scowls at us and moves her child away.
“Riff there are children here.” I scold but he ignores me, giving out orders to the woman in the front counter. “1 berry blast and 1 rocky road, por favor.” He said, mocking the Puerto Rican woman. I slap him in the shoulder and she shoots me a look of gratitude.
The woman doesn’t take long to bring out our ice cream cones. I thank her as Riff just nods.
We slowly start walking back while eating the ice cream. “I have a question,” I start, darting my tongue out to lick the ice cream around my mouth. Riff hums as a response.
“Why did you ask me to meet Diesel if you hate the idea of us being together?”
“Who said I hated ya together?” He asked, not daring to look at me.
“You have this…. look, every single time that we interact. I mean, he said you wouldn’t even tell him where I live.” I say, but he remains silent.
I continue,”Diesel is the reason you’re taking me for ice cream anyway.”
“Nah, I take ya for ice cream because I want to take ya for ice cream.” He says, nonchalantly and I raise an eyebrow at him.
“What, I can’t take my friend for ice cream?” He asked with a sly smirk.
“Friend? I thought you didn’t have friends.” I remark and he breaks out in a full smile, showing his straight and, surprisingly healthy, teeth. “I have my exceptions.”
Riff darts his tongue out to lick his lips, and I can't help but stare at them. God, he’s cute. No.. no no no. I’m not supposed to be thinking like that. I can’t. But I wonder what it would be like to be Graziella. To kiss him tenderly. Hell, I don’t even know what it feels like to kiss in general.
By now, we’re in front of Docs. I peer in through the glass door and see Tony sitting with Valentina. He’s scribbling something in a notebook and smiling giddily.
“He’s got it bad for that girl.” I say, smiling at the boy, oblivious to the fact that we were watching him.
Through the reflection of the glass, I can make out Riff’s eyes on me. “I know the feeling.”
The feeling of being watched combined with those words make the heat creep up to my cheeks… even if it wasn’t for me, necessarily. I turn around to face Riff.
“Oh yeah… you should get back to Graziella.” I say.
His expression falters a bit at mention of the pretty blonde. “I’ll see ya, Lils.” he says saluting in the process.
“Thank you, Riff. I didn’t actually think you would hold up on your end.” I say with gratitude
He holds his hands up. “I’m a man of my word!” as he fades away into the city.
The soft chime of the bell alerts Val and Tony of my arrival as I walk into Docs with a smile plastered on my face. “That smile is for Riff?” Valentina asks and my face unintentionally reddens.
“No, this smile is for my ice cream.” I say, holding the cone up in my hand.
“I’ve warned you about him, Lily,” She starts but I cut her off. “It was just a deal, Val, this isn’t going off and making out with him.” No matter how badly I wanted to.
‘Just promise me you won't kiss him.’ Riff’s words rang through my ears as Val and Tony began speaking. I pictured his face, stained with dried tears and dirt, his expression was broken. Eyes were red and filled with tears.
‘I promise.’

Tap tap…
My eyes stay closed as the sounds swish around in my brain. The distant melody of whatever the hell that was, was far behind me.
Tap tap…
My brain starts to open up. Shut the fuck up.
Tap tap….
“God dammit,” I groan, sitting up and throwing the covers off me. My feet meet the cold wooden floor and sends shivers down my spine as I stomp toward the window.
THUD.
I stop dead in my tracks. My heart beat loudly in my ears as I gulped back my own fear.
Without thinking, my hands grabbed a big box and pulled the curtain back swiftly.
I let out a blood curdling scream as Diesel pressed his face up against the glass. His breath fogged the window, adding to the already blurry effect on the glass. “God damn Diesel, What the fuck!” I exclaim, unlocking the latch.
He laughs wholeheartedly, entering my room. “This yers?” He asked, gesturing to the room. “Well no shit, I was sleeping.” I say, still annoyed.
Diesel still chuckles but apologizes. “Look Lil, I’m sorry. I ain’t think ya was gonna get scared.”
“It’s fine,” i sigh. “What are you doing here? And how do you know where I lived?”
“Well I know ya work at Docs so I figured ya might be here still. I noticed this was the only window that wasn’t boarded up. I aint know ya lived here wit’ Tony.”
“Yeah I moved in not too long ago.”
“I wasn’t too sure at first so I asked Riff where ya lived. Guy wouldn’t even gimme a hint.”
I furrow my eyebrows. “Really?”
“Yep, even bribed him with free milky ways for a month. Son of a bitch wouldn’t budge.”
What is Riff’s problem? Although I didn’t really appreciate Diesel’s surprise attack on me, isn’t this what Riff wanted?
“Anyways,” he continued. “There’s a dance tomorrow night and I.. uhh I wanted to know if ya maybe… wanted to go with me.” He asked, meekly. It was quite adorable actually to see him crawl into an invisible shell that I failed to notice at first. He was actually shy when it came to these things.
“I would love to go with you, Diesel.” I say, smiling brightly at him. “That‘s great. That’s- wow.” He said laughing to himself. “I’ll pick ya up, 7 pm tonight, okay?”
I nod.
“Goodnight Lily. Have a great night. I’m sorry for scaring ya.” He said quietly and I whispered back. “Goodnight Diesel.”
Heat crept up to my cheeks once again as he leaned forward and pressed his lips to my cheek, softly.
He flashed a quick smile and disappeared through the window.
What the hell just happened?
———
“Good morning Valllll….” I say as Valentina walked in for the morning. The giddy feeling hadn’t left my gut since I woke up this morning.
“Beautiful Lily! You seem excited today. Should I be worried?” She joked. “Maybe,” I say, ignoring the rush of excitement bubbling up from within me.
“Diesel asked me to a dance.”
“Mi amor, haven’t you learned a lesson with those dances?”
I sigh, the excitement fading. “Yeah I guess but…. This will be different. I can feel it. Please.”
Val let out a long sigh and met my gaze. “If you are happy, then I am happy.”
My lips pull into a smile and I run to hug her. Valentina wraps her arms around me and pats my back. “I really do think this will be a good thing, tia.”
“I hope so, for you, Lily.”
“Who died?”
Val and I separated from the brief hug to see Tony standing at the top of the basement stairs. “Diesel asked me to a dance.” I say, proudly. He grins down at me. “And ya turned him down?”
“Nope. I’m goin with him.”
Tony chuckles and holds his fist out for a bump to which I comply. “Thats awesome, and now, Lil, if ya could convince Valentina to even consider letting me go with Ma-” Tony says but Valentina cuts him off. “Ay Tony, I’ve said it before, don’t you have enough trouble right now? You are supposed to lay low. Going to a dance with the sister of a gang leader isn’t ideal for you.” she reprimands.
Tony scowls. “Lily is going with a Jet-” Val cuts him off again. “Lilianna didn’t go upstate to prison for a year.”
I frown upon seeing the look on Tony’s face. “Come on Val, he’ll be careful. Won’t you Tony?” I ask, trying to get her to lighten up.
Tony deserved to go with Maria, even if it was risky. All the times he stared into space with his lips curling into a small smile; I knew it was all for Maria. His mind seemed to be on her constantly.
“More than anything. C’mon. These are all memories I’m trying to make.” He says and I try not to burst out laughing at the cringiness of his words.
“You always had a thing for the dramatics,” Valentina chuckled. “Fine. Go with her, but when Bernardo turns his ugly head, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Tony smiles brightly, “Ya won’t regret it, Val!”
—---
“Wow,” Diesel says breathlessly as I twirl in an emerald green dress. “Ya look stunning.” He remarks, making my cheeks heat up. “Thanks! You clean up nice for a Jet.” I say lightheartedly and he replies with a chuckle.
“Come on, Tony! Hurry up, we don’t wanna be late!” I yell down to the boy taking literally forever.
Tony emerges from the basement, clad in a suit and dress shoes. “Woww Ton’. Looking real fancy.” I say. He keeps his eyes on his shoes and dusts a stray fabric from his pocket. “Thanks Lily… You don’t look so- woah..” He says as he finally looks up to meet my gaze. “I’ve never seen you in that color before.” He says and I laugh. “Yeah… Valentina’s been real generous letting me borrow her old dresses. Woman’s got taste y’know.” I say, raising an eyebrow.
“Shall we?” Diesel asks, soliciting a nod from both Tony and I.
The crisp air nips at my nose as we walk to the dance. The nerves start bubbling up from my chest as I gulp, desperate to push them back down. This time will be different. Diesel and I enter the dance as Tony wanders off to go find Maria. My eyes scan the dance floor, but I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for. Or maybe I was.
“Do you wanna dance?” Diesel asks me and I nod. I may not be the best at dancing but hey, at least Tony taught me some stuff. I take his hand as he leads me to the dance floor.
Diesel’s hands gently rest on my waist and I wrap my palms around the back of his neck. My hands played with the light brown curls as he smiled down at me. “Ya really do look gorgeous tonight, y’know.” He said, and I could feel my cheeks becoming 10 shades redder.
Diesel leaned in closer, tilting his head a bit and I froze in place. He must’ve noticed the change in my demeanor because he softly smiled and whispered, “Don’t worry Lily, relax.”
I did my best to relieve the tension building up in my muscles as he leaned closer, our lips almost touching.
Suddenly, a loud pop was heard, almost like a gunshot. Diesel and I jumped back to look at the source. Riff.
Officer Krupke shoved through the people trying to get through. “What the fuck Riff! What the fuck are you doing?” He angrily exclaimed, trying to get the attention of the dirty blond boy. But Riff’s eyes remained locked on one thing. Me.
—------
The dance ended pretty quickly after that. The majority of it was Graziella being so pissed off at Riff for ruining her night. I don’t even blame her in this case. The guy’s messed up. What still baffles me is that he was the one who tried to set Diesel and I up in the first place and now it seems like he resents the idea completely.
I felt it more for Tony, who couldn’t even have Maria in his arms for a good hour without being evacuated from the premises. I really would love to know what his prob-
Thud… Thud…Thud
Diesel again? I suppose he probably just wanted to finish up our moment together before we were so rudely interrupted.
Thud… Thud
The thudding at the window got louder as I made my way toward it and unlatched it. Diesel’s blurred figure crouched on the shed outside. “Jesus, Diesel, you can use the fro-” The window swung open, nearly slamming me in the face. It was not Diesel.
It was Riff.
I backed up in surprise as he crawled in. The cool air seeped in from the window and “What are you doing here?” I asked slowly, my eyes stay glued to his chest, not daring to move up to meet his.
“Sweet place ya got here, love the designer boxes.” He remarks, rather sarcastically. Yet there was something odd, something that I just couldn’t put my finger on. He laughed at his own joke and took a seat on my bed. My eyes were forced to become somewhat leveled with his. They were bloodshot and watery. “Riff,” I start, an uneasy feeling boiling up in my chest.
“Are you okay?” I whisper. He doesn’t respond, but a single tear leaks out of his left eye. I haven't even known the guy for more than a couple days, but my heart breaks for him. He… smiles. It’s not a witty half smile that he usually gives. It’s broken and melancholic. “I did this.” He slurs, struggling to make out the words. He visibly swallows.
“Did what, Riff?”
He stands up and his large frame towers over my smaller one. He leans over slightly, bringing his face only centimeters from mine. “Just promise me you won't kiss him.” He whispers, his breath fanning my face. The smell of alcohol whirled through my nose. So he was drunk.
“Wha- What are you talking about, Riff? You’re n-not making any sense.” I stammer nervously. Shouldn’t he be in bed with Graziella right now? He gets drunk and comes here out of all places?
“Just- Just promise me, Lilianna.” He whispers as his voice breaks, lightly. His hand comes up to cup my face. The soft touch catches me by surprise, but somehow manages to spread a comfortable warmth all throughout my body, silencing the chilly air blowing through my window.
“I promise.” I whisper back. I bring my eyes back up to fully meet his gaze. His face is so close, I can see the slight heterochromia in his left eye that I never seemed to notice before. It’s beautiful.
“Good.” He says, his voice is still slightly shaky. With that, he disappears through the window and into the night.

———
“Ready yet?” Tony asked as I walked downstairs, twirling in my cute baby blue dress.
“I think so.” I replied, smiling at Valentina as she smoothed my hair.
“Wow, mija, you look amazing.” “Gracias!”
Tony stifled a chuckle making us turn toward him. “Yer wearing jet colors. Y’know if ya start going out with Diesel, ya gonna have to be a jet girl.”
I shuddered in disgust. “No way am I gonna be sittin’ ‘round all day waitin’ for some bloodied up boys to come through after a playground fight!” I exclaim, earning a chuckle from Valentina and Tony.
“No pienso que sea buena idea pero…. You kids have fun. Don’t hesitate to come home if you have second thoughts.” Valentina says trying to mask the worried look clouding in her eyes.
“Don’t worry Val. Everything will be fine. I’ll keep Lily safe and we’ll be careful.” Tony reassures and extends his arm, urging me to take it. I comply and we leave for the night after saying our last goodbyes to a very worried Val.
———
The cool air from inside the Diner slaps me in the face as my skin instantly forms goosebumps.
“Hey gu-“ Tony starts but was quickly interrupted by Riff.
“Tony, ya made it! C’mon I got seats for ya both.”
I was disheartened to see that the seats weren’t next to each other. Leave it to Riff to separate me from the one person I know in this gang meeting.
“Lily, ya sit… here… next to Diesel. Tony ya sit here.”
Diesel flashed me a smile and pulled the chair, urging me to sit. I meekly smiled back.
“I’m Diesel. I know yer Lilianna.” He said, trying to make small talk.
“Lily is fine.” I laughed awkwardly. “I hear you were also at the dance. I didn’t see you at all.”
He flashes a bright smile, pulling the toothpick between his teeth.
“Yeah, I uh, noticed ya from afar. I hope that don’t weird or nothin’… I meant to say hi but ya looked so disoriented. I figured ya drank that spiked punch.”
Sneaking a glance across the table, I catch sight of Riff and Graziella passionately making out… again. God do they ever do anything else?
“I was just nervous,” I replied, quickly looking away from the couple. “I’ve never really been anywhere in a while and it was a little nerve wracking.”
“I hope ya ain’t nervous here though?” He says sweetly. If I’m being honest, Diesel is not what I expected him to be. He honestly doesn’t seem like that gang type.
“Maybe a little on edge.” I answer honestly.
Diesel puts his hand on mine for a brief moment. “There’s no need to be.” He says, flashing a genuine smile. I actually find myself smiling back.
My eyes wander around the table and I lock eyes with Tony. He grins at me, eyes flickering between me and Diesel. I flash him a small smile. Diesel isn’t so bad. He’s actually sweet. I was wrong… maybe I will see where things go with him.
“Are ya cold, Lily?”
I withdraw from my thoughts. “Huh?”
“I asked if you were cold. I uh- noticed your hand was freezing and you have goosebumps.” Diesel says sweetly. “Oh that’s really kind of you-“ before I can finish, he wraps his own leather jacket around my bare shoulder. My chest tightens and heat rises to my cheeks. “Thank you.” I whisper, in fear of it sounding like a croak if I go any louder.
The feeling of being watched emerges from my gut and I swallow uncomfortably. Looking directly across the table, I make uncomfortable eye contact with the piercing brown eyes of Graziella. She quickly drops her gaze on to the table and places her legs over Riff’s. I avert my gaze to Riff and see his eyes piercing holes into my upper body. Damn. Way to be subtle Riff. I look down and realize what he’s actually glaring at. Diesel’s jacket.
Why is he so angry? Is it his jacket? Was Diesel not supposed to give me it? Isn’t this what he wanted in the first place?
“So, Lilianna,” the room goes quiet. I look up to see the owner of the voice. Grazi.
My eyes flicker to Tony, who is equally as confused.
She continues, “I’ve been around Doc’s before. That is where ya work right?”
“Yeah, I started a few months ago,” I say slowly.
“Ya seem awfully close with that woman Valentina. Don’t she Riff?” She asks, wiping the smudged red lipstick off the sides of her mouth.
“C’mon girly ya-“ Riff starts to speak but Grazi cuts him off. “How is it that ya know her again? I’m sure Riffy told me but I just can’t seem to put my finger on it.”
I gulp. “She, um, she used to take care of my mother.”
Grazi feigns perplexity. “Oh that must have been so hard with ya motha’ havin’ to learn spic and all that huh?”
Tony pipes up from the far end of the table. “Knock it off Grazi. Don’t be like that.”
I knew that hell would break loose if they knew I was part Puerto Rican, but I’m not interested in hiding who I am. Before her passing, my mother made sure to ingrain it in my brain that the truth is always the right path to go down.
“My mother’s Puerto Rican actually.” I say. A few of the jet girls gasped, while the guys grumbled.
“C’mon Riff leave it to you to invite a fucking PR to our group.”
Diesel reached for my hand. “Watch ya mouth, Ice!” He yelled out.
“She’s a shark! She’s gonna be speaking spic and telling ’em PR’s all about our plans!”
Riff stands up “Everyone shut the fuck up. She ain’t a damn shark. Another person who says another fucking word about it is gonna go through me!”
The room went quiet and I remained speechless.
Tony stormed around and grabbed my arm. “C’mon Lily, we’re goin’.”
I slipped the jacket off of me and handed it to Diesel with a smile. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Lily.” He says sweetly. My eyes wander further up. Grazi desperately tries to caress the side of Riff’s face but he moves out of her grasp, fuming. He stands up and walks up to Tony and I.
Tony, Riff and I walk away with the others whispering behind.
“Way to go, Graz.” “What? I ain't do nothin’ but talk!” “That’s too much sometimes.”
The air of the night cooled down significantly as we walked out.
“I’m sorry,” I say to Tony. “I shouldn’t have agreed to go.”
“I’m sorry.” Riff says and both Tony and I turn to him in shock. “I ain’t know Grazi was gon’ be like that.”
“What’s gotten into her anyway?” Tony remarks, peering through the glass door at the blonde.
Riff shrugs. “Girl got a real jealousy problem.”
“Why would she be jealous?” I furrow my eyebrows in confusion, but Riff dismisses my question.
“It’s getting late, don’t want you prisoners getting home past ya curfew. Safe trip.”
He says and Tony guides me away. “Goodnight to you too, asshole.” He yells back and Riff chuckles.
Tony and I begin our walk home, arm in arm. The chill wind brushes along my forearm but I pretend not to notice. “Tony,” I start, to which he replies with a ‘hmm’.
“You and Grazi,”
“Lil, ple-“
“You two were a thing right?”
He inhales sharply and nods.
“What happened?” I ask.
“Well before I went upstate things were… complicated. We were together but, like Riff said, she got jealous over the most meaningless things and… it was like she always had to be the star. Y’know?” He asked and I nodded in agreement.
He continued, “I broke it off before I left. Course I still loved her when I left. Thought of her almost every second I was on that bus but over time…. All I could remember was the bad. Honestly when Riff told me they was together I was kinda relieved.” He said as we neared Doc’s.
Tony dug his keys out of his pocket and unlocked the door as I began to speak. “Yeah I totally get that… Why would she be jealous tonight though?” I asked.
We enter the store and Tony flips the light on, shutting the door and locking it. “Don’t get angry or anything,” he starts and my heart beats quicker with those words. Oh gosh. What now?
“Maybe she noticed Riff’s eyes on you the entire night.”
I scowled. “Oh gosh! Goodnight Tony!” I huff.
“Hey! All I’m saying is I ain’t ever seen him look at somebody like that, not even Grazi herself.”
His voice grows distant as I enter my little attic room. An unstoppable smile stretched across my face.
He was staring at me for longer than I thought he was? That’s interesting.
I could feel my face heating up just thinking about it.
God, why the hell am I feeling like this?

———
My mind wandered as my eyes struggled to stay closed. The easy glow of the moon seeped through my window, illuminating the tiny room. The silhouettes of boxes danced along the walls as each car passed by.
Of course my mind was on one thing in particular; my little conversation with Riff earlier. Sure it was short lived, but damn I really felt like I could talk to him forever. The heat of my pillow aggravated me as I flipped it over. Plopping my face down on the pillow again, I was not met with a cool side, as a result of doing this all night long.
I huffed and dragged myself out of bed. Cool air was just what I needed.
My arms tugged at the window, forcing it open. Allowing myself to crawl through, I propped myself up on the roof of the shed that was located just outside my window.
The cool air filled my lungs blissfully, instantly relieving the cluster headache starting to form.
Tonight was such a blur. I mostly stayed by Anybodys that whole night. The most I heard was that Tony met a girl; una puertorriqueña. Things didn’t go down too well. We left shortly after that. I tried probing Tony about it on the way home but he didn’t say too much. Riff was nowhere to be seen either.
A familiar hushed voice shook me out of my thoughts.
“Come on baby please! You can stay at mine! My pop don’t even come home half the time.” The voice whined. I recognized the voice to be Graziella. What the hell was Grazi doing out at this hour?
Shifting from my position, I quietly hid in the shadows of the rooftop, nestling myself in a snug corner.
“Y’know I can’t, girly girl.” Oh no. The voice. The nickname. Wow, Riff and Grazi, huh? Who would’ve thought. “The Jets gotta prepare for tomorrow night. Without Tony, we gotta step up our game.” He continued.
A soft movement danced across my left knuckle, making my eyes widen in horror. My eyes slowly moved down. Crawling around on my hand, was a spider. All 8 legs expertly moved around my skin, tickling the area.
A loud gasp emerged from my mouth as I violently shook my wrist to get the unwanted critter off. . My palm flew to my mouth. Both heads snapped to my direction.
“Did you hear that?” Riff questioned, inching toward the shed. To my relief, Grazi ignored the question. “C’mon Riffy. Please let’s go home.” She whined. “I guess I can stay for a little.” He gave in, earning a giggle from Grazi. He pulled her in for a long kiss. There, right in front of me, Riff and Graziella passionately made out. I struggled to keep my gag in. However gross it was, I couldn’t ignore the deep burning feeling in my gut. Almost…. Jealousy?
———
My eyelids drooped, threatening to close as I loosely held the broom in my hand. The wood stick almost left my hand completely, but was saved by Valentina. “Ay Lily, why do you keep yourself up at night?” She asked sympathetically. I dramatically yawned as a response. Val smirked and playfully slapped my arm.
“Don’t know… couldn’t sleep, I guess.”
“Is it what happened with Tony?” She asked in a hushed voice.
I peered up with curiosity. “What even happened with that anyway?”
“Tony, he uh, had an exchange with a Puerto Rican girl.”
I gasped. “He slept with her?”
Valentina put her hands up in Tony’s defense. “No, no! Nothing like that, mija. He danced with her.”
I scrunch my nose up in confusion. “Oh. So what? It’s just a dance.”
Valentina widens her eyes solemnly. “Yes, but this wasn’t any normal girl. Of all the girls in the West Side… Tony chose María Vasquez.” She said ominously.
I blinked, hoping for an explanation, but Val continued to stare at me blankly. “I’m still lost.”
“María Vasquez is Bernardo’s little sister. The leader of the Sharks!”
My eyes widened. “And that’s what the whole thing was about? Leave it to Tony to dance with the one girl he can’t have.” I chuckle. Valentina sighed and shook her head.
“He’s so adamant about this one girl. He even came in here trying to learn some Spanish. He’s got it good, I’m afraid. I wonder what his criminal associate, Riff, thinks of this.”
I scoff. “Hey Val, Riff’s not that bad.” She turns to face me and tilts her glasses down. “Oh really? Where is that coming from?”
“Nowhere, I mean I get that I barely know the guy but so far he’s been nice to me and I’m una puertorriqueña-” I rambled before she cut me off. “Sí, Lilianna, pero you are also half white. He thinks that makes you a gringa, the same way he thinks I’m a gringa because I married a white man!”
“Whatever,” I divert. “I think you should have some faith in Tony with his little romance. I mean after all you did marry a white man and things worked out well. Maybe it will for them too.”
“I think Tony has enough trouble already.” She waved her hand around, as to brush off the topic. I didn't push. “Come on, mi amor, come eat.
I rest the broom against the wall and take a seat. Val places a plate of fries in front of me and I give her a thankful smile. “This is great Val, thank you.”
Valentina watched me carefully as I pushed a french fry into my mouth. The savory flavor caressed my taste buds and made my mouth slightly drier than it had been before. “I knew you needed a little fuel after I heard about your catastrophe yesterday.” She smirked and I blushed bright red, desperately trying to conceal my embarrassment with my hands. Valentina laughed heartily. “What happened?”
“Oh gosh, tia, I should have listened to you y Tony. I wasn't ready… like at all! I pushed myself and- oh god I was about puke on the dance floor!” Once again, my hands flew up to my face and dragged the skin down as if I pulled the shame from my body. Val came around the counter and began to rub my back soothingly. “I was jus-“
The door slammed open. “Howdy amigas!” A sarcastic voice said. I peek one eye out from my rather sweaty palms. Riff’s face grinned back at me, but his features quickly fill with concern upon seeing my tomato faced state. “What’s uh… What’s going on here?” he asked nervously. Valentina rolled her eyes and made her way back around the counter, but not before opening the basement door and yelling down.
“Tony! Your delinquent friend is here to see you!”
“Actually, I was here to see Lily.”
Valentina and I both turn to look at him in shock as Tony rushes up the stairs. “Sorry buddy boy, I’m afraid my sweet presence ain’t here for you this time.” Riff continues.
“What do you want, Riff?” I questioned. Then, it hit me.
What if he saw me looking at him and Graziella last night?
Embarrassment coursed through my veins and I could feel myself turning an even darker shade of red, if that was even possible.
The corners of his lips twisted up into a devious smirk as he stared into my soul. “One of my jets has taken a liking to you.”
Valentina scoffed, as if to say something, yet Riff kept talking. “I was wondering if ya would come out to dinner with us tonight. You too, Tony.”
“No! Absolutely not,” Valentina burst out. “Esos gringos odian tú cultura! ¡Odiaban a tu madre, Lily!” (Those gringos hate your culture! They hated your mother, Lily!)
“Yeah I’m gonna take your side on this one Val, sorry.” I say quietly. I knew the type of people the jets were from the beginning. A jet only hangout? No way.
“C’mon girly girl, Diesel came home smitten with ya yesterday. Couldn’t keep his eyes off ya while you were with that other girl.”
I narrow my eyes. “Anybodys is not a girl.” Riff widens his.
“But she wants to be a jet so bad and ya seem fine with her. C’mon Lils! Honestly, I can't convince Tony, but if you go then he will. Please.” He begged, a foreign expression on his face.
“First of all, never call me that again.”
“You’ll have so much fun!” He interrupted.
“Fine. But if, and only if, you buy me ice cream for the rest of the month.” I replied.
A bright smile appears on Riff’s face. “Deal. Come to Cubby’s, 8:00. What about you, buddy boy? Whaddya say?” He says turning to Tony, who sighs.
“I guess I have no choice now?” He says regretfully. My eyes catch Valentina, who has her face buried in her palms.
Riff laughs in excitement and wraps his arm around Tony, leading him out the door. “We’re gonna show them guys that you ain’t done with the Jets….” The voice faded as they got further away.
“Hey tía, you don’t have anything to worry about. I’ll be responsible about this.”
“Ay Lily, nothing about this is responsible. You two are messing with trouble. Pure trouble. I don’t get what you see in that criminal.”
See in him? What does that mean?
