Hartley heads Toyota front row lockout over Ferraris in the Algarve | World Endurance Championship
Brendon Hartley secured Toyota their first pole position of the WEC season ahead of the Six Hours of Portimao, while Kamui Kobayashi ensured a front-row lockout for the manufacturer. Hartley’s best time of a 1’30.171 was enough to secure pole for the number eight car, two tenths quicker than the number seven. The two Ferrari 499Ps of numbers 50 and 51 will start behind the Toyotas, both over 1.5s slower than the pole time. When the session began, the Glickenhaus car driven by Romain Dumas was the first car to set a representative time, before the number eight Toyota driven by Brendon Hartley jumped immediately to the top of the times with a 1’30.480 – easily the quickest time of the weekend. The two Ferraris of number 50 with Nicklas Nielsen and James Calado’s number 51 car could not get within a second of the Toyota, before the second number seven Toyota piloted by Kamui Kobayashi moved to second, just over a quarter of a second slower than its team mate. With less than five laps remaining, Hartley pulled the number eight Toyota into the pit lane to end his session early. He was soon joined by Kobayashi in the second Toyota, leaving the number eight car on provisional pole position. Any threat of Toyota being ousted from the front row quickly evaporated as the two Ferraris also retired to the pit lane, joined by the two Porsche Penskes and the Cadillac car. As the final two minutes ticked down, only the two non-hybrid hypercars of the Glickenhaus and the Vanwall remained on track. Frederic Makowiecki ventured out in the number five Porsche with under two minutes remaining, but did not have enough time to begin a final flying lap. As the chequered flag flew, the number eight Toyota was confirmed on pole position, with Kobayashi’s best lap in the number seven car securing an all-Toyota front row. The two Ferraris of number 50 and 51 will start third and fourth on the grid, with the two Porsche Penskes split by the number 94 Peugeot behind. The Cadillac car will start from eighth on the grid ahead of the second number 93 Peugeot, with the two non-hybrid hypercars of Glickenhaus and Vanwall completing the hypercar order. Prema took pole position in the LMP2 class with the number 63 car, but are under investigation by the stewards after receiving emergency rear bodywork repairs in the pit lane while waiting for the session to begin. In GTE Am, Corvette will start on pole after Ben Keating set the quickest time in the sole C8.R in the field, two tenths of a second faster than the Iron Dames Ferrari. Porsche Hunts 2021 Title at Belgium
The Porsche works team tackles the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Spa-Francorchamps on May 1, 2021, with two Porsche 911 RSR’s.
For the six-hour race in the Ardennes region of Belgium, the factory drivers Gianmaria Bruni from Italy and Richard Lietz from Austria share the cockpit of the car. 515-hp GT racing vehicle with the starting #91. The crew in the #92 sister car has changed from previous years: this season, Frenchman Kévin Estre, the 2018/2019 WEC champion, shares the vehicle with Neel Jani. In preparation for his WEC mission with the Porsche 911 RSR, the Swiss racer contested the final round of the 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in Sebring and took part in extensive tests.
The Race
The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is located in the far east of Belgium close to the German border. Opened in 1921, the 7.004-kilometre racetrack is the longest dedicated racetrack on the FIA WEC calendar. With 21 corners and several long straights, the track undulates through the Walloon countryside – not surprisingly, the circuit is also known as the “Ardennes rollercoaster”. Fast passages like Raidillon/Eau Rouge and Blanchimont are as notorious as the La Source hairpin at the end of the start-finish straight.
“Our team has prepared meticulously for the 2021 season. With a top result at the opening round in Spa-Francorchamps, we’d like to send a clear signal from the very start that there can only be one goal for us: to win the world championship,” clarifies Pascal Zurlinden, Director Factory Motorsport. “Our class win in 2020 at the first round in Belgium clearly underlined that the latest version of the Porsche 911 RSR suits the special characteristics of the ‘Ardennes rollercoaster’ very well,” explains Alexander Stehlig, Head of Operations FIA WEC. “During test drives at Hockenheim, among other venues, we gave our teams and cars the final touches. At the two-day prologue in Spa, we’ll do our utmost to find the best setup for the special characteristics of this track. We’re ready to race!”
Before the start of the race weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, a so-called prologue will be held at the venue. Porsche and its customer teams take part in the two-day test session on 26 and 27 April with a total of seven 2019-generation 911 RSR.
The Porsche GT Team Drivers
In the No. 91 Porsche 911 RSR, the works team relies on Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz for the third year in a row. In 2019, the experienced pair won the season-opening round at Silverstone in Great Britain. Kévin Estre, who shares driving duties in the No. 92 car with Neel Jani, travels to Spa-Francorchamps as last year’s winner. Last season, the Frenchman also won the finale in Bahrain and concluded the year ranking third. Jani returns to the WEC after competing for the Porsche TAG Heuer Formula E Team.
The Customer Teams
Dempsey-Proton Racing fields two Porsche 911 RSR at the start of the WEC season. Works driver Matt Campbell from Australia joins forces with the team owner Christian Ried (Germany) and the former Porsche Junior Jaxon Evans from New Zealand. Andrew Haryanto from Indonesia, German Marco Seefried and Alessio Picariello from Belgium have been announced as the drivers in the No. 88 sister car. The German customer team Project 1 also campaigns two 911 RSR in all six events this season. The squad from the German town of Lohne in Lower Saxony tackles round one with the Norwegians Dennis Olsen and Egidio Perfetti as well as the Italians Matteo Cairoli and Riccardo Pera. The all-British driver crew, Michael Wainwright, Ben Barker and Tom Gamble, compete for GR Racing in the No. 86 car.

Motorsport-Programm 2019
Porsche tritt in Le Mans erneut mit vier Werksautos an
Stuttgart.

WEC confirms 13 Hypercar entries for 2023 season | World Endurance Championship
The full season entry list for the 2023 World Endurance Championship has been published, and features 13 cars in the top Hypercar class. Toyota return to defend their 2022 title with the all-star line-up of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa. The second GR010 Hybrid will be driven by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez, who won the title together in 2020 and ‘21. Their main 2022 rival Alpine, which raced a grandfathered LMP1 car, are gone, but Toyota now face opposition from several other manufacturers. The most anticipated new entry is Ferrari, who have filled their 499P prototypes by promoting several of their GT stars and also giving a second chance to their Formula 1 reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi after he failed to land an F1 seat for 2023. Cadillac, who are planning to enter F1 with Andretti Autosport but have that team’s arch rival Chip Ganassi Racing running their Hypercar, have brought 2017 WEC champion Earl Bamber, Alex Lynn and Richard Westbrook across from their IMSA line-up. ByKolles Racing meanwhile has had its Vanwall-branded car accepted as an entry and with a crew consisting of Formula V8 3.5 champion Tom Dillmann, World Touring Car ace Esteban Guerrieri and 1997 F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve. Despite his race-winning experience in prototype sports car racing, Dillmann is rated as a Gold driver by the FIA rather than a Platinum like his team mates and the majority of the Hypercar entry list. Penske will run two of the four Porsche 963s There will be four of the new Porsche 963s, and run by three different teams. Team Penske are running two ‘factory’ entries in affiliation with Porsche, and their line-up includes the likes of WEC GTE Am class champion Kevin Estre, Formula E’s Andre Lotterer and one of Porsche’s leading GT stars Laurens Vanthoor. Jota Sport’s line-up is led by Euroformula Open and European Le Mans Series champion Yifei Ye. Proton Competition have two-times WEC GTE Pro champion Gianmaria Bruni on their books. Their team mates are yet to be confirmed. Peugeot have two full-time entries and both are being run in-house. In the first car is former F1 driver Paul di Resta, IMSA LMP2 champion Mikkel Jensen and two-times FE champion Jean-Eric Vergne, and the second car will be piloted by 2013 World Endurance champion Loic Duval, 2016 WEC LMP2 champion Gustavo Menezes and DTM star Nico Muller, a continuation of the line-up the team finished 2022 with. The final Hypercar entry is Glickenhaus Racing. The American team so far only have two-times Le Mans 24 Hours winner Romain Dumas signed to drive their car. The official entry list published today also included 11 LMP2 entries and 14 in the LMGTE Am class. The new WEC season will begin at Sebring in March. Porsche: The Road to the World Championship Title
As the Porsche 911 RSR rolls on to the grid at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) on May 5, 2018, it begins its second season in the FIA Sports Car World Endurance Championship. The model has already notched up two race wins in North America, as well as the North American Endurance Cup (NAEC), which includes the prestigious endurance races at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta. However, there is one thing still missing from resume of the most sophisticated 911 ever: a world championship title. Exactly one year later, at the penultimate round of the 2018/2019 Super Season, this major goal is ticked off.
Scoring positions third and eighth from the six-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Porsche has claimed an early world championship title win in the GTE-Pro class of the World Endurance Championship WEC. Now with 246 points, the sports car manufacturer from Weissach heads to the final round of the 2018/2019 Super Season at Le Mans holding an unassailable lead in the manufacturers’ championship.
The highlight: Double victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Clinching a double victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2018, Porsche impressively underlines its title aspirations. At the long-distance classic in France, the two ca. 510 hp Porsche 911 RSR from the WEC turn up sporting the legendary “Rothmans” (No. 91) and “Pig” (No. 92) designs, thrilling fans not only from a sporting perspective but on an emotional level as well. Michael Christensen from Denmark and his two factory driver teammates Kévin Estre (France) and Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) score a commanding victory in the fiercely competitive field of manufacturers in the GTE-Pro class. Their Porsche colleagues Gianmaria Bruni (Italy), Richard Lietz (Austria) and Frédéric Makowiecki (France) put the icing on the cake for Porsche with second place. The enormous potential of the Porsche 911 RSR is clearly evident, particularly in qualifying. Lapping the track in 3:47.504 minutes, Bruni sets a convincing new lap record for GTLM vehicles.
The key: Lights-to-flag win with consistently strong performances At the 2018 season-opening round at Spa-Francorchamps, the Porsche factory squad Manthey Racing lays the foundations for the world championship title: With Estre/Christensen finishing on second, and Bruni/Lietz on fourth, Porsche takes the overall lead. After scoring a double victory at the Le Mans 24-hour race, a strong race at Silverstone (Great Britain) follows. While Bruni/Lietz are removed from the standings after round three of the season after initially ranking second, the No. 92 car earns important points towards the world championship with position three. After round three, the lead in the overall standings is now 36 points. The driver pairing Estre/Christensen follows up with another win at Fuji (Japan), with both Porsche 911 RSR finishing on the podium at Shanghai (China). At the first WEC race at Sebring (USA) since 2012, Bruni/Lietz celebrate their first joint victory. The lead over the opposition has now increased to 100 points. As usual, the Porsche GT Team easily wins the match point at Spa.
The secret to success: Teamwork at the highest level “I’m immensely proud of the entire team,” says Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “The Manthey Racing squad are highly professional, exceptionally success oriented and always make time for some fun, which in turn has a positive effect on the team structure and performance. To be so successful in the face of such tough competition between factory teams is always the result of hard and consistent work. Pascal Zurlinden and all his colleagues have found the perfect recipe.” The factory squad is made up of around 30 highly qualified members of the racing operation. “I can only reiterate Fritz Enzinger’s praise,” declares Pascal Zurlinden, Director GT Factory Motorsport. “The team structures are modern and ideally tailored to highly competitive motor racing and the drivers make the best use of the potential. And confidence increases with each success. This is always a decisive factor in sport.”
The Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC In the Sports Car World Endurance Championship (WEC), which was first contested in 2012, sports prototypes and GT vehicles compete in four classes: LMP1, LMP2, GTE-Pro and GTE-Am. They all compete together in one race but are classified separately. The Porsche GT Team contests the GTE-Pro class, while the customer teams Dempsey Proton Racing, Project 1 and Gulf Racing fight for honours in the GTE-Am class.
During the first six years since the foundation of the WEC, a classic race calendar applied, with the start of the season in spring and the final round in early winter. 2018 heralded a major change. The 24 Hours of Le Mans in June is the new season finale. To implement this change to a “winter calendar”, FIA chose a so-called Super Season as a transitional model. Eight races are contested from May 2018 to June 2019. The special feature: The Le Mans classic and the six-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps are held twice during the Super Season. The following season begins at Silverstone in September 2019 and ends in June 2020 with the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
