Here is a quick way to create resin gems for your cosplay.

1) Buy clear cabochons in the size you want

2) Use metallic nail paint and paint a few layers. Make sure you use metallic paint as I’ve experimented with a few others and they do not provide the varying color effects.

The last picture compares ones painted with metallic paints vs ones painted with regular nail paints. Bottom left has metallic gems. Ones with glitter and ones without. The upper right has gems painted with normal nail paint except for the yellow gem which was painted with metallic paint as well. See the difference?

3) Glue polystyrene, silver scrapbook paper, or aluminum foil for backing so your paint doesn’t chip or tear away. Most use hot glue but I just use a very thin layer of Sobo (fabric/craft glue) and it does the trick. Enjoy!

Glow bitch, glow! I have a very focal point of light. But I’ll live. This is a hot glue gem. With an LED tea-light in it. And red nail polish on it. What if your favorite way to make gems? I made a prototype bib necklace this weekend hours before going to a real party (with vaccinated people, beverages and catered finger foods laid out buffet style. Weird, huh?!? 😂). I had some experimental resin gems and made polymer clay bezels for them. Sewed the bib necklace and added sequin bling and other accoutrements to it and a soft ribbon to attach it around my neck. If time allowed, I would have sewn the sequins on, but that’s ok. Turned out great and was a hit. Have you been to a “real” gathering yet? Since I am compelled to cosplay every single one of Weiss' outfits, it was only a matter of time before I started recreating her ice skating outfit from @rwbyamityarena. Here are the gem setting and accents. I chose to use a purchased gem from @allstarco. The gem in the artwork looks pink, but I thought red better suited Weiss' overall color scheme, so I opted to go with the purchased gem instead of casting a pink version. The settings are sculpted from Fimo polymer clay. It took about 5-6 hours to make the gem setting and 1-2 to make the accent. It takes so long because the piece has to be as perfect as possible since I am taking a mold. The molds are @smoothon silicone rubber. I use legos to make mold boxes since they are watertight. The pieces themselves are cast in black epoxy resin and will be burnished with a chrome powder after 7-8 hours of curing. I was doing some experiments with my resin gems to get the right look and I'm so happy with the results. The final process was a layer of iridescent flakie nail polish, iridescent cellophane, then gold metallic cardstock. The iridescent parts add so much depth and change colors and sparkle in the light. These two were bad castings that I used for tests, so they're broken and bubbly, I know. Can't wait for the real deal!
