It seemed to be a handsome, leather-covered book. Harry opened it curiously. It was full of wizard photographs. Smiling and waving at him from every page were his mother and father.
“Sent owls off ter all yer parents’ old school friends, askin’ fer photos… knew yeh didn’ have any… d’yeh like it?”
Harry couldn’t speak, but Hagrid understood.

"There are all kinds of courage," said Dumbledore, smiling. "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom."

“D’you think he meant you to do it?” said Ron. “Sending you your father’s Cloak and everything?”
“Well,” Hermione exploded, “if he did — I mean to say — that’s terrible — you could have been killed.”
“No, it isn’t,” said Harry thoughtfully. “He’s a funny man, Dumbledore. I think he sort of wanted to give me a chance. I think he knows more or less everything that goes on here, you know. I reckon he had a pretty good idea we were going to try, and instead of stopping us, he just taught us enough to help. I don’t think it was an accident he let me find out how the mirror worked. It’s almost like he thought I had the right to face Voldemort if I could. . . .”
I wonder why despite THIS⬆️, Hagrid picking up the stone with Harry, constantly dropping clues, giving him a flute, Dumbledore giving Harry the Cloak with perfect timing and explaining to him how the mirror works, not to mention the confirmation above, why pray tell me, the stone quest puzzles finale fight simply being Dumbledore’s vibe check for his Chosen One is considered just a whacky "theory" in the HP fandom?

synopsis: on what would have his twentieth birthday, you visit geto's grave
pairing: suguru geto x reader
themes/content: semi-canon curse au. angst. language. death/loss.
word count: 1.3k
a/n: here's some angst bc i've been in a mood for the past few days and am allergic to being happy!
Tumblr media
The grass is damp under your skin, the rain from this morning clinging to your clothes, the smell of wet earth lingering despite the absence of clouds in the sky. This is the closest it’s gotten to raining on this day in years, what would be a sign of late winter opening into spring, but today it just feels dreary and cold.
Sighing, you place the bouquet of lilacs - his favorites - onto the stone, careful to not cover the plaque adorning the granite. At this point you could recite it in its entirety without needing to see it, the words burned into your mind from the countless days you spent reading and rereading it, hoping that the shape of the characters would finally make it sink in.
Suguru Geto
Cherished and loved.
The epitaph still feels halfhearted, empty. Even though you and Satoru spent weeks trying to figure out what to write, everything you came up with felt hollow, unable to capture his essence. You wanted to do him justice, but you just couldn’t; he’s more than a plot of land and some words engraved in stone.
Of course, it’s a moot point: the grave is empty, anyways. After the fight against Toji, Shoko had to completely destroy his body, the risk of it being used maliciously too great. A shudder runs down your spine as you picture it, the cruelty of using your best friend’s corpse for something malevolent.
Would he notice? Would it bother him to know what had happened to his flesh? What makes a person, anyways; is it the body, or is it something else? You hope he doesn’t mind what had to happen to him after his heart quieted and his breathing stilled.
Are you at peace, Suguru?
You can’t help but wonder if, after everything, death brought him a respite from the pain he endured while alive. You knew the nature of his cursed technique, the necessary consumption of evil; in absorbing it, did it make him, too, evil? Was he plagued by the darkness he was destined to destroy?
You hope not. Despite the wickedness he witnessed, he nevertheless dreamed, hoping for a brighter future.
“What did you wanna be when you were a kid?” you ask through a mouthful of ramen.
Suguru sits across from you in the booth, forearms resting on the table as he eats his lunch. “What do you mean?” he questions, tilting his head ever so slightly.
“What did you want for a job? There’s no way you wanted to be a sorcerer,” you chuckle. “Like, I wanted to be one of those people who makes the cool brick patterns along sidewalks.”
He holds back a laugh at your answer. “I’m not sure, I don’t think I ever really thought about it.” He pauses, taking another bite of his food. “But I guess if I had to pick, probably a musician or something, maybe guitar, I always liked how they could make something sound beautiful with just their hands,” he muses softly.
“I could totally see you on a sick guitar,” you grin.
“Yeah, but I got my cursed technique too early. I never really got a chance to do anything but this,” he shrugs. “Maybe in another life.”
“Maybe,” you smile.
Now, the guitar you picked out for him, an acoustic one crafted in dark wood, sits in the back of your closet collecting dust. You were supposed to give it to him for his birthday. He was supposed to play it. He was supposed to be here, be alive, be celebrating with you.
Pain shoots up your palm as you look down, realizing your hands have been clenched into fists, your nails beginning to draw blood. Shaking out your arms you take in an uneven breath, a desperate attempt to steady yourself.
All the things he never got to do.
“I’m sorry, Suguru,” you whisper to yourself, placing a bloodied hand over the grass covering his grave.
He should be here. He never even got to turn twenty, never got to have kids or the family he wanted, hell, he was just a kid himself when he died. Just a fucking kid.
“That…that can’t be right,” you stammer. “There’s no way.”
“I’m sorry,” Satoru places a hand on your back, tears slowly rolling down his cheeks. “I - fuck - I couldn’t save him. I was too late.”
“No, no, no, no,” you begin to spiral, gaze rapidly shifting over the ground as you process his words.
Suguru was dead. Killed by a man named Toji Fushiguro, trying to protect the Star Plasma Vessel, the one who was supposed to assimilate with Master Tengen.
“I don’t…I don’t know what happened,” Satoru chokes out, “But…I saw his body. He’s gone.”
A scream echoes down the corridor - was it yours? Everything feels far away as Gojo wraps his arms around you, sobs racking your body as you cry into one another.
Shaking your head, you wipe the tears that have begun to fall as you remember the day you lost him. Despite the years that have passed, you remember it like it was yesterday, the way the setting sun covered you and Satoru as the night air came in, unable to move from that spot as you wept together.
The sickest fucking part was that it didn’t even matter.
When Riko Amanai, the Vessel, was found dead, they just got a replacement, another body to stand in for Master Tengen’s needs. They told Suguru to protect her with his life and he did, but ultimately the loss of hers was inconsequential to the upkeep of Jujutsu society; just as one flower died they plucked another.
But they couldn’t regrow Suguru’s soul.
Four men.
That’s how many it took to carry his body from the basement of Jujutsu High. You watched in silence as they passed you, unspeaking, unwavering, unbothered as they bore his weight.
It feels wrong, somehow, like he should be heavier. He always had this gravitational pull, this universe-sized soul that drew everything to him - shouldn’t they be able to feel that?
How heavy is a body? How heavy is the grief it carries?
“Hey,” a voice pulls you back to the present, the sun beginning to hang low in the sky as you ground yourself, idly tugging at the dirt beneath you. “I’m glad to see you,” Satoru greets warmly as he walks across the graveyard towards you.
Since the last time you saw him he’s aged, the creases around his eyes deeper than a twenty-year-old’s should be, an air of sadness clinging to him like wet clothes after being caught in the rain.
“You too,” you smile as he sits next to you in the damp grass.
Neither of you explicitly make plans to see each other here every year, yet you both tacitly know you wouldn’t miss this, the annual reconvening one you simultaneously cherish and dread. Suguru deserves to be celebrated, but it’s also a reminder of the time he didn’t get, the birthdays cut short when his life was stolen from him.
The two of you sit in silence for a while, content without speaking as a cool breeze picks up, dusk settling in.
“He should be here,” Satoru mutters, his knees tucked up to his chest.
“I know,” you murmur as you lay on your back, gaze unfocused on the darkening sky above you.
Another momentary pause falls between you.
“Did you love him?” he asks.
“Yeah,” you answer truthfully. “Did you?”
“Yeah.”
You let out a shaky breath. “Satoru?”
“Mhm?”
“Do you think that was enough, that we loved him?”
He tilts his head to look down at the grave that separates you, the lilacs you brought now lightly covered in a layer of dew. Sighing, he brushes away the tears that had been forming along his lash line. “I hope so.”
“I hope so, too.”
He reaches an arm out to you, holding your hand in his as you both place your empty palms onto the dirt.
“Happy birthday, Suguru,” you whisper.

The staff laid on the table next to Lance. It was rather simple looking, except for the large deep crimson red stone at the top. There was engraved markings up the side, though neither of them could read the writing. It almost cost them their lives getting it. The sorcerer they stole it from did everything in his power to try and take it back. That only meant the staff must have been one of a kind and powerful.
Lance studied the picture harder, before rereading the paragraph he had just finished. He was pretty sure he had just found what they were looking for, but he silently prayed he was wrong. The description and picture matched perfectly. Sighing heavily, he slid the book he was looking at to the edge of the table, before slumping back in his chair.
"Think I found it." His hand ran through his dirty blonde hair as he pulled the staff closer. "I hope I'm wrong, man." The staff was pulled closer as he continued to look it over. "I didn't read much, but the little I did says it does nothing good."

Elain: “He snapped your wings, he broke your bones.” Cassian: “It will take more than that to kill me.” Elain: “No it will not.”
What if Elain wasn't talking about Cassian and Hybern? What if it was Cassian later on in life? Or do we think that Nesta with her power over death, blocked his death from reaching him? “Will I hear the earthworms writhing through the soil? Or the stretching of roots? Will the bird of fire come to sit in the trees and watch me?” Dusk coming back to life. Or the leylines (roots) activating with Bryce opening the portal. The Midgard worm which appears to eat / be attracted to magic. Bird of fire is Vassa
"I can hear your heart beating through the stone. I can hear hers too" Vesperus and Nesta? I can't remember who she said this to. On rereading Koschei and Vesperus? Or Koschei and Aelin?
"I can hear her crying. Everyone thinks she is dead, but she isn't. She was changed, like I was."
Who is this! Another made person? Another seer? "I can hear the sea. Even at night. Even in my dreams. The crashing sea—and the screams of a bird made of fire.”
The sea, Dusk? The bird of fire Vassa? Why is she screaming?
“They sold her—to … to some darkness, to some … sorcerer-lord …”
The human queens sold Vassa to Koschei.
“I can never see him. What he is. There is an onyx box that he possesses, more vital than anything … save for them. The girls. He keeps other girls—others so like her—but she … By day, she is one form, by night, human again.”
He has his heart (soul?) trapped in an onyx box, and he is looking for the key. Reminds me of what the Bone Carver said, that the blood of a power High Fae trapped Koschei and her blood still runs through the humans. He is trapping humans to see if they will open the box for him. Vassa has "Blue eyes" and "reddish gold hair" - like Meave? Like Theia? I actually think that Stryga was Koschei's wife and stole his heart locking it in a box as punishment for something. Similar to Meabh and Erawan.
“There is … a lake. Deep in—in the continent, I think. Hidden amongst mountains and ancient forests. He keeps them all at the lake.” “Other women like her?” “Yes—and no. Their feathers are white as snow. They glide across the water—while she rages through the skies above it.”
Is this Vassa the Firebird (Mala) and Mab (as a swan)?
This reads to me like a retelling of the Children of Lir.
“I can hear her—crying.” “Everyone thinks she’s dead." “But she’s not. Only—different. Changed. As I was.”
Who is she? Briallyn? Mab? Who people think is dead? Her crown was never recovered? Another made person, mortal to immortal? Miryam?
“She stared into the darkness above. “I think they used it to … to trap their enemies and their enemies’ children into the stone itself.”
The Asteri trapping the fae into stone in the prison? Looking up at the darkness, to the sky, the stars / asteri on different planets. Who are their enemies? Aelin, the fae, and the starborn. "He did. He saw me. He will not now.”
He? As in Hybern? The Cauldron? Koschei?
“It made sense, I supposed, that Azriel alone had listened to her. The male who heard things others could not … Perhaps he, too, had suffered as Elain had before he understood what gift he possessed.
The biggest questions for me are the flaming feather on the snow.

Top 5 favorite characters of all time?
Okay, this is a big one, and i actually had tough time picking five (and i ended up with six ((or even seven XD)) anyway lol), but this is what i came down to, and it was pretty interesting to think on it to be honest, a good ask:
Master Twardowski - a character from several Polish legends to which i trace all my fascinations with the Deal with the Devil trope: a noble, a sorcerer, dealing in dark arts, kinda like a Polish doctor Faustus i guess? Witcher 3 Heart of Stone expansion was heavily based on these legends too, to add a more recognisable pop culture reference here. Anyway, these were some of the stories I was reading a lot as a kid, and I think they leaked through pretty heavily lol, so even tho I am not exploring the character as is that much I'm gonna give him first place on this list.
Honourable mention on this one: Devil as a character in general.
Tumblr media
Raistlin Majere - ok, this is actually a crime that I never painted him, so something I have to definitely change in the nearest future. But this character had a massive impact on my interests, regarding fantasy in general, and in terms of specific character tropes, and I remember being absolutely fascinated by his arc. Gotta reread these books actually.
Tumblr media
Sheogorath - yeah, so I don't paint this dude enough too, so another thing I gotta add to my list, but Shivering Isles may be my favourite game expansion still, the aesthetics, the plot, the reveal, and I have a feeling this character influenced quite a lot, directly or indirectly, also you know, I am not that big on Funko Pops but i got one of his, and that means a lot lol.
Tumblr media
Baba Yaga - listen, this is just gonna be a list of characters I have to paint more or actually paint lmao, but in case you wondered where the witchy themes come from.
Tumblr media
Morte - i didn't expect this dude to show up on this list, but here he is, both because he is a damn floating skull, duh, but also for sentimental reasons because Planescape: Torment, and i needed something to reference that influence, and Morte is the best face Planescape can get (tho Lady of Pain is a close second). Also he is a fantastic character.
Tumblr media
Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy - okay, it is a top 6 apparently, but screw that, i need a vampire on this list too. both because a vampire and all fascinations related to this one, but also because of that gentle monster trope that I do adore.

Koschei's box
While rereading the acotar books I noticed something.
Book of Breathings is described as a box.
The box would be heavy—and cold. Who are you, who are you, who are you— I flexed my fingers and cracked my neck. I am summer; I am sea and sun and green things. “Come on, come on,” Amren murmured. Above, water trickled over the stones. Who are you, who are you, who are you— I am Tarquin; I am High Lord; I am your master. The box quieted. As if that were answer enough. I snatched the box off the pedestal, the metal biting into my hands, the power an oily smear through my blood. An ancient, cruel voice hissed: Liar. And the door slammed shut.(Acomaf)
The box—the Book—was silent. Then it said, Like calls to like. “Open,” I gritted out. Unmade and Made; Made and Unmade—that is the cycle. Like calls to like.(Acomaf)
And we have Koschei's onyx box which we know from Elain. And koschei is a...sorcerer.
Elain shifted her face toward him. Another blink. “They sold her—to … to some darkness, to some … sorcerer-lord …” She shook her head. “I can never see him. What he is. There is an onyx box that he possesses, more vital than anything … save for them. The girls. He keeps other girls—others so like her—but she … By day, she is one form, by night, human again.” (acowar)
But Vassa’s freedom would end. Lucien had said as much months ago, and still visited her often enough that I knew nothing in that regard had improved. She would have to return to the lake, to the sorcerer-lord who kept her prisoner, sold to him by the very queens who had again gathered in their joint castle. Formerly Vassa’s castle, too.
And from bone carver we know he is a death-god.
“They are death-gods, girl,” the Carver hissed. “You are immortal—or long-lived enough to seem that way. But my siblings and I … We are different. And the two of them … Stronger. So much stronger than I ever was. My sister … she found a way to eat life itself. To stay young and beautiful forever thanks to the lives she steals.”
So...I went to look at what Book of Breathings was from. It is from Egyptian Mythology.
The Books of Breathing (Arabic: كتاب التنفس, romanized: Kitab al-Tanafus) are several late ancient Egyptian funerary texts, intended to enable deceased people to continue to exist in the afterlife. The earliest known copy dates to about 350 BC.[1] Other copies come from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods of Egyptian history, as late as the second century AD.[2] It is a simplified form of the Book of the Dead
So what if the box koschei has is not a box at all but a book like book of breathings? What if he has a spell book? He is a sorcerer after all.
And in that egyptian myth part I added it says the book of breathing is a simplified version of the book of dead. What if koschei has the book of dead...he is a death-god???

Rereading Drac's intro and monologues it's kinda hilarious how he prides himself of his warlike past, all "I HAVE STRUCK FEAR IN THE HEARTS OF THE OTTOMAN TURKS AND MADE THEM FLEE BEFORE ME ONCE I INVADED THEIR LANDS"
and then he ships himself away from England after getting attacked by one (1) guy with a big knife
In canon, I think it's meant to sell his overall 'super empowered noble has been resting on his laurels/perks so long he doesn't want to deal with the riffraff or effort of an even marginally fair fight.'
In MY canon--and honestly, with all the context clues Stoker left laying around--it's yet more proof that Jonathan got hit with his own supernatural edge and is the legitimate Threat+ among the heroes. Especially in the context of Dracula having lived in a place that was entirely aware of how dangerous he was, and how he still kept getting victims disappeared, and how he did all this despite the fact that all the Transylvanian locals had almost the exact same accoutrement as Van Helsing handed out to the gang, and it still did not result in anyone just killing off Dracula at home.
The Brides? The Bloofer Lady? Easy. They aren't jacked up mega vampires who went to sorcerer school at the Scholomance. They're regular-grade vampires. Stake and a slice is all they need.
But Dracula, who basically suffered the equivalent of a bee sting when he touched Jonathan's crucifix, running from a handful of dudes with holy crackers, flowers, and crosses rather than use anything at his disposal to attack them? Doesn't make sense.
Dracula, fleeing at full tilt from the same* man he toyed with for two months just because he happened to have a knife on him? The same man who was running after him, on foot, alone, and was never attacked in the chase? Doesn't make sense.
What does make sense is that, finally, after the last supernatural straw has broken the camel's back, Jonathan Harker tipped fully over the line between human and Inhuman the night Dracula made his biggest fuckup yet and went after Mina. A final, fatal bit of stimuli to complete the stunted change into Something Else.
And when Dracula sees Jonathan in the Piccadilly house he knows it.
And he knows that he's now got Something after his head who can--and very much plans to--kill him stone dead as if he were any common bloodsucker. Scholomance sorcery perks revoked. Actual Threat Registered. Fuck that entirely, time to hide out in Transylvania.
All that said, while I believe having his heart and head attacked by anyone else might have hurt him at the climax in the snow? I genuinely think that if it had been anyone other than Jonathan handling at least one half of the execution, it would not have done the trick. Just as, if the Harkers had never been involved in the standoff in the Piccadilly house, I believe Dracula would have tried to make some counter assault on Van Helsing and the Suitors Three--God knows he's been running circles around similarly armed Transylvanians for centuries; enough to have drained the local feeding grounds so thin he had to move.
Dracula was hauling ass back to the castle specifically to avoid Jonathan 'Spade-Stabbing, Wall-Crawling, Coffin-Chucking, Cadaver-Carving Cryptid' Harker.

Okay, so, @risingfire17-in-wonderland-blog and I are doing a "12 ship fics for 12 years of friendship" writing challenge, in which we write each others' fave ships, regardless of our personal feelings. The only real rule is we both have to be familiar with the source material. One of the ships on my list for her is Harry/Hermione, one of my oldest OTPs (and one of the very, very rare non-canon ships I actually have Feelings for lol)
The only problem is that my bestie hasn't touched the series since 2011, when the last film came out lol so she couldn't recall any "canon" evidence of Harmony feels. And since rewatching the films is infinitely easier than rereading the books, we're doing weekly watches of the series!
Last night, we watched Sorcerer's Stone, and she took notes of EVERY POSSIBLE HARMONY MOMENT, like a scientist taking notes on animals in the wild lmao
Transcript of her notes below cut:
[Transcript: picture of notebook with my best friend's writing
"Why to Ship Harmony
Movie 1:
she repaired his glasses
"she's kinda a bitch, but she fixed my glasses, so I'll give her a chance" kind of attitude
she always sits next to Harry
she rushed to his side during Quidditch convo
she knows more about him than he does
she gets his attention before Snape does during class
"this is your fault" look he gives Ron bc she's crying
Harry remembers she's in the bathroom
he jumps on a troll's back to protect her & he dragged Ron into action
she set a teacher on fire to protect him
she cheered like a psycho when he won Quidditch
chess - she screams "that's barbaric" when Ron's piece kills Harry's
she walks on Ron's side but rushes to Harry's side when his scar hurts & when he rushes off
"lucky Hermione pays attention in Herbology"
(book only) potions test ⬇
she calls him a great wizard ➡ he replied "not as good as you" ➡ and admits there are more important things than books & cleverness
(book only) she gives him his first hug
when Harry asks Hermione after he gets out of hospital how she is and she says "never better" (because she saw Harry)
The back pat & look he gave her when she won 50 pts -- he didn't even get that excited about Ron - he clapped and smiled for Ron while he was looking but continued to look admirably at Hermione even after she looks away"

While Ron told Hagrid all about Charlie’s work with dragons, Harry picked up a piece of paper that was lying on the table under the tea cozy. It was a cutting from the Daily Prophet:
GRINGOTTS BREAK-IN LATEST
Investigations continue into the break-in at Gringotts on 31 July, widely believed to be the work of Dark wizards or witches unknown.
Gringotts goblins today insisted that nothing had been taken. The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied the same day.
“But we’re not telling you what was in there, so keep your noses out if you know what’s good for you,” said a Gringotts spokesgoblin this afternoon.
Harry remembered Ron telling him on the train that someone had tried to rob Gringotts, but Ron hadn’t mentioned the date.
“Hagrid!” said Harry, “that Gringotts break-in happened on my birthday! It might’ve been happening while we were there!”
There was no doubt about it, Hagrid definitely didn’t meet Harry’s eyes this time. He grunted and offered him another rock cake. Harry read the story again. The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied earlier that same day. Hagrid had emptied vault seven hundred and thirteen, if you could call it emptying, taking out that grubby little package. Had that been what the thieves were looking for?
Tumblr media
Yeah there was no "robbery" I just know Dumbledore leaked fake news to Daily Prophet, the fake news newspaper, and had Hagrid have the clipping on display when Harry visits, to get the ball rolling for his year end chosen one vibe check in the no don't go there or you'll die a most horrible death aha room.
