A Vancouver woman who is eight months pregnant says her landlord is threatening to raise the rent once her child has been born.
Joy Maynard and Antoine Moore are expecting their first child any day and have been living in their Vancouver basement suite since April 2021.
They told their landlord earlier in the summer about the pregnancy and Maynard said he informed them that his son is the owner of the house so they need to be talking to his son about these matters.
That’s when they said they were informed that any additional occupant would cost them $600 a month.
“We also told them that my mom is coming to visit. The son said that my mom is going to be considered an occupant,” Maynard said.

for renters, a note:
An important fundamental legal principle is that if you obtain an asset, you are also responsible for the associated liabilities. In the case of a house with tenants in it, the house is considered an asset and the existing leases would be associated liabilities.
This means that unless there is a sale clause in your lease, if your landlord sells your property while you're still in it and your lease is still in effect, you have the right to be there until the end of the original lease. You do not have to supercede the old lease with anything.

New Detroit ordinance seeks to end no cause evictions, lease terminations - WXYZ
It’s a topic many Detroiters have been vocal about for years and it’s now a focus of closer review by city council.
The issue — evictions and lease terminations without cause.
“Families and children are being evicted... thru really no fault of their own,” said Detroit City Councilman Coleman Young Jr.
Councilman Young Jr. told 7 Action News, one-third of all evictions during the pandemic were no cause, meaning renters who paid on time and had no issues still often found themselves forced to move.
A new ordinance he’s put forth seeks to end leases allowing the practice.
“Selling the property or doing a major renovation, those are not just cause in the sense a tenant has done anything wrong,” said Julia Belian, law professor at University of Detroit Mercy.
Belian shared her take on both sides of the issue.
“How do you see this affecting tenants and landlords?” Simon asked Belian.
“It does seem to say that landlords and tenants can no longer enter into leases that have a clause that says the landlord can kick the tenant out at any time for no reason. This gives them that protection,” she said.
Young Jr. says not only does this make sense, but it’s a way of making the system more fair for all. He also wants to be sure landlords who play by the rules can still be successful given the economic challenges facing many Detroiters.
“We have an affordable housing crisis taking place in Detroit. An inflation crisis... and we just got over a public health pandemic crisis,” he said.  ...

Ricardo Tranjan wants Canadians to rethink what we call our national housing crisis. Tranjan, a researcher with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, says what we’re experiencing can’t even be called a crisis—our housing system hasn’t suddenly failed. Instead it’s working exactly as designed, enriching property owners at the expense of everyone else. The problem is that it’s gone into sudden overdrive.
That’s why he thinks the fixes espoused by government and industry—more supply, for the most part—aren’t going to get us where we need to be. Instead, he wants to inject politics back into the housing discussion, framing the problem as an issue of class, with tenants on one side and landowners on the other.

Landlords are different from other jobs though, in that their income comes mostly from rents, in a way it doesn’t for say, entrepreneurs.
yes, and landlords as a drag on the economy has been pointed out by economists foundational to the field, like ricardo and smith, but as long as you have private real property of any sort, and as long as leasing that property is legal, you will have some quantity of landlords in your economy
the question is, what specific negative outcomes are you looking at and wish to avoid? because only once you begin to identify those can you begin to make real policy decisions. is not enough housing being built? are rents rising too fast? is it too hard to enter the property market? do you just want to increase the rate of home ownership? these are all, like, operationalizable. you can do something with them.
"landlords are parasites" isn't, really. it has a negative effect in both directions: it raises the hackles of anybody who owns property (which, again, unless you're in favor of mass expropriation and/or collectivization of housing, is something a nonzero number of people in your society will own), and it doesn't suggest any specific policy solution, besides "do things which hurt landlords' interests."
but hurting landlords doesn't actually necessarily help everybody else! there are lots of ways to make life worse for random groups of people that do not, in fact, help society at large. and the policies that do in fact make a difference very often aren't, like, satisfying as revenge. they're boring, unsexy stuff like improving tenant protections, or encouraging tenants' unions, or building social housing, etc., etc.

Still thinking about that passage in Spinning Silver where the author describes entering the waters of women's domestic labours. It's easy to go along with the current, to be swept up, a drop of water in a lake. Everyone is happy to see you, you are easily interchangeable. You understand the demands, they seem easy and effortless. And it comes when you want to stop fighting!! Tired of pushing and pushing to do something alone or out of the ordinary or in the world of men. You can always submerge yourself in the water of women's work.

So yesterday, a number of people tried to explain to Ash Sarkar why her tweets were in poor taste at best.
Rather than choosing to listen to people who are definitely not in a position of power talking about their experiences of eviction, or having to leave their homes etc, or Cornish people in general trying to explain why we are not in a position of privilege here, and asking for her solidarity- she’s chosen to take one of these tweets out of context, and effectively ask for a pile on.
Ash Sarkar has regularly used the plight of renters to make money, writing in the media and similar. But now she’s using our housing crisis for laughs.
This isn’t the behaviour of a leftist, it’s the behaviour of a class traitor.

Ariane Lalonde pays more than $1,200 a month for a studio apartment she's converted to a two bedroom in Montreal — and she's had enough.
"We're all paying way too much," said Lalonde, who feels that she should be paying at most $800 or $900 for the space she's renting.
"My generation, we won't be able to have a house," she said. "I never thought I would not be able to when I was young. I took that for granted. It's insane."

Shitty, blonde white landlady: 0
Me: 1 2
Honey, you can have your friend compliment my home and my style and my taste all you want - I still have the email where you condescendingly ask if I've "tried cleaning" my already clean home, and insinuate that pest control said it could be my pets "using the bathroom in the closet" that's causing the nasty smell coming from within the wall.
Oh, and, there is no 'federal law' about not being able to feed birds from your porch if you live in an apartment, which she also tried to say while she was here, as well - that's a state regulated thing, and in the state of Illinois you can feed birds "...in an elevated feeder within 100ft. of a dwelling devoted to human occupancy." And they openly admitted it isn't stipulated in the lease that you can't do so, either, so making up fake laws really won't win you any more points than accusing me of letting my cats shit in the floor.
Never be afraid to do your research (your state laws are easily accessible online) and hold your ground - landlords aren't people, they're parasites who don't respect your rights.
Even if you have anxiety, you can do it! Let the power of being legally correct give you a confidence power up! (Or imagine Gritty backing you up.)
(Tumblr is a global community, so I'll note that this ocurred in/is all pertinent to the U.S., and my lived experience in it.)
Tumblr media
Quicktips:
- Make sure most of your correspondence is in writing/email! Once something is on the internet, it's there forever (much to many a politician's chagrin).
- If they visit in person, check your state's laws about your right to record your conversation - Illinois, for instance, is one of the last remaining states to require 2 party consent to be recorded, so I would have needed her permission to record the conversation. (Although I like that this means people can get in trouble for filming you without permission for Tiktok, for instance.)
- Don't be afraid to have a third party present as a witness!
- CYA: Cover Your Ass. That's what these tips are for, so take whatever precautions you can, pre-emptively. These people have THEIR best interests at heart... not yours. And I was once a timid 22 year old who didn't know any better, and went a whole December taking cold showers because my landlady wouldn't fix my hot water heater... and in that state, I could have refused to pay rent until she did. But I had no idea!

Aha! It's been less than 12h since the fight about "I'm not giving away my key as long as I still pay rent here", and we're already at the next one! At 8am as I'm on my way out the door to a class I hate that I have to get up too early for.
It was just the more annoying one this time, and apparently they've decided now that it's okay if I keep my house key, but I am not allowed to keep the key to my room because... of reasons, I guess. Something something I can't just lock the room if I don't live there anymore? And when I said I'm keeping both keys until the next renter has taken over my contract and is paying rent for the room and then that renter gets them from me, she yelled after me as I was walking out the door about what's wrong with me.
Of all the things we've had fights about so far, this is the dumbest one yet I think - why in the world would I give up my keys if I might still be paying rent for another three months?? Regardless of if I never show up there again because why the fuck would I want to, or sleep there or let my parents or friends sleep there every weekend, that's none of their business - it's MY room that I pay rent for and I can do with it whatever I want.
#also she asked if I'd already cleaned my room for the showings tomorrow#ma'am i am not a toddler who needs to be micromanaged; you don't tell me how to clean; and it's my room and I clean it when and how I want#I was thinking hmmmm. what if the new renter takes the contract from 1 january?#say I'm not taking everything this weekend because I'm not up for the fith but it turns out I'm allowed to take the table etc#how petty would it be to drive there early on christmas morning; because they surely won't be there then; and just take away the furniture#they don't own? and give the keys to the new renter without meeting those two again and block everyone's number?#now that's a theoretical scenario of course and probably would cost me more nerves than it'd be worth#i just hope they'll decide on a renter in the next two days with the many showings they have#that they told me I can't be here for because they'd be embarrassed about me#i mean i won't be here because i can't be bothered but it's so fucking stupid they think they have the right#to kick me out of my own home and room#jess' flatmate rants#she 'informed herself' about if i can just take furniture. on juraforum dot de. a german forum. where anyone can write anything. we're also#in austria not germany#i'm going over to the rental advice place tomorrow and at this point it's out of pure spite#i'm so fucking sick of them#and if they want to be more annoying tonight they can reschedule all their showings because then i'll insist that#no one is looking at my room unless i'm there and they schedulded stuff for when i'm not there#so if they want to be annoying they can reschedule everything to times when i'll be at homr
