Billionaire fossil fuel mogul David Koch died August 23, 2019. Though he will rightfully be remembered for his role in the destruction of the earth, David Koch’s influence went far beyond climate denial. Ronald Reagan may have uttered the famous words, “Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem” back in 1981—but it was David Koch, along with his elder brother Charles and a cabal of other ultrarich individuals, who truly reframed the popular view of government. Once a democratic tool used to shape the country’s future, government became seen as something intrusive and inefficient—indeed, something to be feared.
“While Charles was the mastermind of the social reengineering of the America he envisioned,” said Lisa Graves, co-director of the corporate watchdog group Documented, “David was an enthusiastic lieutenant.”
David Koch was particularly instrumental in legitimizing anti-government ideology—one the GOP now holds as gospel. In 1980, the younger Koch ran as the vice-presidential nominee for the nascent Libertarian Party. And a newly unearthed document shows Koch personally donated more than $2 million to the party—an astounding amount for the time—to promote the Ed Clark–David Koch ticket.
“Few people realize that the anti-American government antecedent to the Tea Party was fomented in the late ’70s with money from Charles and David Koch,” Graves continued. “The Libertarian Party, fueled in part with David’s wealth, pushed hard on the idea that government was the problem and the free market was the solution to everything.”
In fact, according to Graves, “The Koch-funded Libertarian Party helped spur on Ronald Reagan’s anti-government, free-market-solves-all agenda as president.”
Even by contemporary standards, the 1980 Libertarian Party platform was extreme. It called for the abolition of a wide swath of federal agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Bureau of Land Management, the Federal Election Commission, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Federal Trade Commission, and “all government agencies concerned with transportation.” It railed against campaign finance and consumer protection laws, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, any regulations of the firearm industry (including tear gas), and government intervention in labor negotiations. And the platform demanded the repeal of all taxation, and sought amnesty for those convicted of tax “resistance.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Koch and his libertarian allies moreover advocated for the repeal of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other social programs. They wanted to abolish federally mandated speed limits. They opposed occupational licensure, antitrust laws, labor laws protecting women and children, and “all controls on wages, prices, rents, profits, production, and interest rates.” And in true libertarian fashion, the platform urged the privatization of all schools (with an end to compulsory education laws), the railroad system, public roads and the national highway system, inland waterways, water distribution systems, public lands, and dam sites.
The Libertarian Party never made much of a splash in the election—though it did garner almost 12 percent of the vote in Alaska—but doing so was never the point. Rather, the Kochs were engaged in a long-term effort to normalize the aforementioned ideas and mainstream them into American politics.

loki x black!reader
1 9 8 1 BRANCHED TIMELINE Loki had no idea how he found himself outside of a 1980’s roller rink(well, he did, just not the exact purpose), but as O.B., or “A.D. Doug” had said, his time slipping is not random, as it had always brought him to someone important.
As soon as he had stepped into the building, he immediately felt out of place. He tried to ignore the weird stares he was being met with as he made his way to the “Rent-A-Skate” counter.
“Uh, do you perhaps know what year it is?” He asked the woman at the counter, who was staring boredly at her nails. He didn’t think anything of her until she looked up, making him realize it was in fact the love of his life staring right back at him; you.
“1981.” You bluntly answered. Loki looks around, his hopes that people stopped staring vanishing. “Would you by any chance have the time to talk?” You whispered something to the girl next to you. “I guess I do,” You said, grabbing your coat. “But not for long.”
You exited the counter, taking him by the hand to lead him outside through the back door. Once he exits the building, he realizes that this roller rink is on a cliff, the result of destruction below it.
You two sit down on a bench. “So…” You start pulling on your coat. “What were you trying to talk about?” You asked, mimicking his accent, making him smile. “Oh, right. Well, how crazy would it sound if I told you that you aren’t from here?” You raise an eyebrow. “Not from here? Well of course I’m not.”
He leans forward. “What do you mean?” He asked, a bit hopeful that you remembered everything you two went through with the TVA. You nudge his shoulder with yours, scooting closer to him. “You know what I mean. Do you really think I’m spending my life working at a skating rink? Hell no. I’ve been spending my time trying to find a way back; back to you.” You explained. “See, that’s the thing. The TVA…it’s gone.” You pull your coat tighter around you. “Gone? That can’t be true.” Loki shakes his head, a sympathetic look on his face. “I’m sorry.” You look up at the sky, then down at your shoes.
“Knowing you, I’m sure you’ll find a way to get it back, right?” You assure, mainly trying to convince yourself. The TVA was like your home; it might as well have been.
“Have you spoken to the others?” You asked, trying to steer the conversation. You scooted back to your original spot, not realizing how close you were to him. If your cheeks could get red, they would be. “Sort of. I’m just trying to figure out how to control my time slipping.” “Time slipping…” You muttered to yourself.
“Yeah, it could happen at any moment. O.B. is trying to make a tempad.” “O.B…I’m sure he should have no trouble.” You joke. “You know…” He says, looking out into the distance. “I’m not sure how long I have, so I figured that I should just say that I-” You look up from your lap. “Loki?” You call out. You stand up from your spot on the bench. “Loki?
You go back inside, distraught–and annoyed–that the one person you wanted to talk to randomly appears in your life again, then disappears just as quickly. “What were you doing out there?” One of your co-workers, Amanda, asked.
“You didn’t see who just walked up in here a while ago? She was talking to that white guy…” Your other co-worker, Tricia, said. “Guys, shut up. It’s not that serious..” You told them in a preoccupied tone as you saw him enter the building, once again.
“Time slipping.” You muttered to yourself.

TW: DISCUSSION OF DOMESTIC ABUSE TACTICS
Something that really puts me off wolfstar, at least in canon and anything vaguely canon compliant, is that it takes Sirius being a shit friend in 1981 (something that becomes mutual by November 1981) and sprinkles in abuse.
If Remus and Sirius were in a romantic relationship in 1981, Sirius is using some classic abuse techniques on Remus.
Namely: (image taken from the NHS website)
Tumblr media
Isolate: Sirius goes to lengths to isolate Remus from his friends. By guaranteeing Remus isn’t told the secret (poa ch18), Remus will never see James, Lily, or Harry again because that’s how the fidelius charm works. He could have turned up at their door and still wouldn’t be able to see them. He has been very successfully cut out of their lives. According to Remus ,James wouldn’t have believed any of his friends were the spy (DH ch 5), meaning this all came from Sirius as we’re told in PoA (ch18).
Peter was also in hiding as the secret keeper, though to what extent we’re never told (“when I arrived at his hiding place, he was gone” (poa ch18)). If they’re trying to keep Peter safe from the spy and not tell Remus about the switch (which they are, poa ch18), it’s likely Remus has been cut out of his life too. Based on Sirius’ will.
Remus doesn’t have a major support network to fall back on; he refused to go to his father for help (pottermore) and his lycanthropy makes it difficult for him to have pretty much anyone (DH ch11). So if Sirius has been able to get James, Lily, and Peter out of Remus’ life by his conviction that Remus is the spy, he has successfully cut Remus off and isolated him from all of his close friends.
Money: This leads on from the previous point. Remus, at that point, didn’t work. His lycanthropy made it incredibly difficult for him to get and keep employment and so most of his time was dedicated to the Order (pottermore). As he wouldn’t return to living with his father, it was James that funded Remus’ entire life and paid his rent (leaky cauldron interview with JKR 2007).
Needless to say, cutting Remus off from James doesn’t just mean he has one less friend - it means Sirius has cut Remus off from his finances. If James and Remus are no longer in contact, and it stands to reason they’d have to be otherwise Remus would figure out that Sirius isn’t the secret keeper (which is the thing they want to avoid (poa ch18)), then Remus has no form of income. How quickly that would turn dire we don’t know, but probably not very long. Sirius’ actions are controlling Remus’ access to money.
Blame: We don’t know why Sirius thinks Remus is the spy, neither the books nor pottermore goes into any details (it’s not because Remus was with the werewolves, he doesn’t do that until 1996), only that he does. Meaning the isolation and controlling of his finances happens because of something Sirius believes of Remus - if Remus had noticed this (and if Peter hadn’t betrayed them within a week he would have) Remus would have been blamed for Sirius’ actions.
It’s also likely Sirius would deny his tactics if Remus called him out on it, tiptoeing pretty close to the “deny the abuse is happening, or downplay it” line too.
Accuse of affairs: Of course I say kinda this one not because of actual affairs, but because of what Sirius has accused Remus of doing elsewhere. Replace affairs with ‘accusations of murdering their comrades, planning to murder more, and conspiring with a fascist dictator’. Remus hasn’t done any of that, and yet it doesn’t stop Sirius from accusing him.
For comparison, when Remus believes Sirius was the spy; he has been told Sirius was the secret keeper, Dumbledore corroborated that Sirius was the secret keeper, Peter has been ‘killed’, there were eye witness accounts saying that Sirius murdered Peter and then blew up a street, Sirius was caught at the scene laughing and, as far we can discern, goes with law enforcement quietly, and he is imprisoned. There’s nothing to suggest Remus thought Sirius was the spy before he’s provided with the evidence (even if that evidence turned out to be wrong). Sirius did all this to Remus without evidence.
This is one hell of thing to accuse your boyfriend of doing. It’s a hell of a thing to accuse a friend of doing don’t get me wrong, but when this is the person you’re supposed to love and be the closest to? That shit is rough.
Viewing Sirius and Remus’ interactions in this period through a romantic lens takes it from just being shitty to being downright grim. Listen I love a good bit of angst in a ship, so long as the angst is built on a solid foundation of trust and respect, but this goes beyond like casual angst for me. And people’s claim that Sirius being in a relationship with Remus at the time is the thing that makes it okay is just not the one.

Built in 1927, the Barbizon Hotel billed itself as “New York’s Most Exclusive Hotel Residence for Women.” From 1927 to 1981, no men were allowed above the ground floor and it rented exclusively to women. Some of the Barbizon's most famous residents included Joan Crawford, Frida Kahlo, Grace Kelly, Sylvia Plath and Liza Minnelli.
In 2002, it was renovated and renamed The Melrose Hotel. In 2005, the hotel closed and the building was gutted and rebuilt for condominium use. It has since been renamed Barbizon 63. Even after the condo renovation, there were still 14 women living under the old arrangements at the hotel due to rent control in 2006. Sources: here and here

Sarah Burton is leaving Alexander McQueen at the end of this month. End of an era!!
New York Fashion Week just passed, sorry will be running through the good looks another time - terms to think about. Flaneur-core with a side of intellectualism (Helmut Lang, Proenza Scholar), princess at work/Practical princess (Sandy Liang, Mirror Palais), "In-Dario-Argento-World" - slick, but saturated colours (Coach). Earth Child rave (Collina Strada, Eckhaus Latta).
Design Director at Prada and Miu Miu Fabio Zambernardi, has decided to leave the Prada Group after approx 40 years (since 1981) at the company. What could the future of both of those brands hold? What would it look like if Miuccia retired?
Ezra Collective won the Mercury Prize 2023.
Coco Gauff won the US Open 2023!! Woop! Love the New Balance 2 piece also - she won in the red version.

There's been a lot of climate related events in the world - Morocco earthquake, Greece/China flooding, heatwaves in the Western Hemisphere in September - I really can't imagine that people will continue to ignore it when it happens every summer now. I do think we need to adapt quickly - in natural ways (modifying houses and buildings for air, doing less, finding ways to cool our bodies etc) and younger people will be speaking up about it (even during the US Open women single semi final!) or finding orgs that align with sustainable lifestyles. This might be jarring for a while but honestly....we need to get everyone on board and find ways to make sustainability sexy and engage with the masses.

For NYFW, Chanel created "Lucky Chance Diner", a food popup to celebrate the launch of CHANCE EAU FRAÎCHE, their new Eau de Parfum. This diner also serves ice cream and lasts from the 8-10th September.
Interesting product of the week:

Made me think about how many people may just travel to meet their friends, or travel with friends and this becomes a convenient travel companion. This is also related to the flux and movement of people within the city. It's a screen that's easy to pack away in case of (unstable) housing which many young people in the UK live in due to lack of rent controls. Bit of a conceptual reach but definitely designed for easy packing.

Helena Bonham Carter’s Harper’s Bazaar UK interview | February 2023
A WOMAN SCORNED Helena Bonham Carter tells Lydia Slater why her latest role, exploring the life of the 1970s soapstar Noele Gordon, feels like restorative justice Those of a certain vintage may remember the ponderous sequence of nine guitar notes that were the signal to cluster around the television for Crossroads. Set in a Midlands motel, the soap was much derided for its flimsy sets, implausible storylines and clunky dialogue; nevertheless, in the mid-Seventies, the series was attracting 15 million viewers, and battling Coronation Street for ratings supremacy. The unquestioned star of the show was Noele Gordon, known to the nation as Nolly, who played the matriarchal, auburn-haired motel owner Meg Richardson (later Mortimer). The role had been created with Gordon in mind, and she remained Crossroads’ most popular character from the show’s launch in 1964 until 1981, when she was suddenly sacked. Her defenestration, and the reasons behind it, are the premise on which Russell T Davies has based his new three-part series, Nolly. ‘One of my very first jobs in TV was a trial script for Crossroads, and I’ve wanted to write the story of behind the scenes on that show for 40 years,’ he said. ‘Russell has always been a real supporter of the underdog,’ says Helena Bonham Carter, who portrays Gordon, complete with coiffure and carefully modulated accent. ‘He thought Nolly was really badly treated, and I think he wanted to give her the send-off and the recognition she deserved.’ Bonham Carter was ‘very aware’ of the soap as a child. ‘It was part of the perma-wallpaper, and I knew all the characters.’ She was immediately drawn to the complexity of the woman in Davies’ screenplay. ‘Nolly was a highly complicated character and a mix of many things – and not an easy mix,’ she says. ‘But I love playing people who are complex.’ Gordon was a child stage star who came from a modest background. She trained at Rada and went on to work both behind and in front of the television camera, becoming Britain’s first female TV executive; she helped Ned Sherrin and Reg Watson launch ATV Midlands in 1956, and was the first woman to interview a British prime minister when Harold Macmillan appeared on her chat show. Steeped in the workings of daytime television, Gordon was unafraid to voice her opinions on how things should be done on Crossroads. ‘She was outspoken, she was herself, she was utterly authentic,’ says Bonham Carter. ‘I think, frankly, she terrified the people who ran the show. And she was punished for that. It’s not new, is it, that women aren’t allowed to have a strong voice?’ Certainly, the first episode presents the ‘Queen of the Midlands’ as a daunting figure, swanning to the studios in mink coat and Rolls-Royce, changing a new character’s accent from Brummie to RP (in the teeth of the producer’s protests), and then playing an on-screen practical joke on the same rookie performer, after she dared to cast doubt on Gordon’s assertions of the programme’s popularity. But the series also shows how Gordon was greatly loved and respected by (most of) the people she worked with – particularly the actor Tony Adams. He played the motel’s suave, moustachioed accountant, Adam Chance, and in reality not only rented a flat from Nolly but was her closest ally – for, having been jilted by her fiancé, she never married or had children. ‘The show gave her a real sense of identity, belonging and purpose,’ says Bonham Carter. ‘She said she had two lives, as Meg Mortimer and Noele Gordon. And whenever she went to a hotel or a restaurant, inevitably they would take her to inspect the kitchen… the line was very smudged.’ As a result, Gordon lost far more than just her job when Charles Denton, the incoming controller of programmes at ATV, informed her agent that ‘all good things must come to an end’, a decision that this series lays squarely at the door of misogyny and ageism. ‘I think Nolly is quite right when she says, “You wouldn’t have sacked me if I’d been a man”,’ says Bonham Carter. ‘Men are allowed to be difficult and dictatorial. It really feels like Greek tragedy – she’s cut off in her prime.’ Gordon refused to take the decision lying down and complained to the press, resulting in national headlines, and sackfuls of irate letters sent to ATV from her devoted fans, while the series shows how producers retaliated by declining to tell Gordon how she would be written out and going to the extent of staging her fake funeral. Bonham Carter herself has never joined a long-running franchise. ‘Even after just two seasons with The Crown, by the end, with the best will in the world, you’re beginning to get a bit automatic – and if you’re faintly bored, it’s time to move on.’ Fortunately, at 56, her own career is as busy and diverse as ever. ‘We might have less collagen, but we’re much more interesting when we’re over 50,’ she says, with a laugh. ‘Life makes you more interesting, you’ve got more depth, the map of the soul is so much bigger if you’ve survived.’ Sadly, Gordon did not. She died of cancer in 1985, just four years after her sacking, while Crossroads itself only limped on until 1988. This charming series, and Bonham Carter’s portrayal, are a worthy tribute to a national treasure, and an overdue acknowledgment of the unjust treatment meted out to her.

THE VALUE OF EDUCATION
THE VALUE OF EDUCATION - https://keywestlou.com/the-value-of-education/There was a time when an education represented in most instances the ticket to economic success. Unfortunately, no longer the case. Not as much a certainty. It was for me. It was for Steve Thompson. Steve knows and openly admits it. When I got out of the Air Force, I enrolled in Seattle Community College in accounting. There was a taco stand in Seattle called the Outrageous Taco Co. It was a small storefront in the University District. They expanded all over the city in the next two years. I went there dozens of times and studied the whole operation. A large corn tortilla on a flat grill with all the fixings and sour cream on top. You could watch the whole process right in front of you. Not only did I think it was the best thing I ever ate, I thought I could run that operation myself. That's how clueless I was. A couple of years of Accounting in Junior College and way too much confidence. My twin brother invited me to Fort Lauderdale and that was all it took. My girl friend and I hitchhiked to Florida. That was 1971 and the last time in my life I ever hitchhiked anywhere. My folks suggested I go to work for a restaurant before investing in one. That turned into the best advice of my life. I went to work for Taco Viva in Fort Lauderdale for $1.62 an hour. Not only was that job extremely physical and mental, I realized immediately I knew nothing about the restaurant business.  After six months of hard labor and sleeping on my brother's couch, I went to work for the first disco on Fort Lauderdale Beach. It was called the Village Zoo. It was a whole new world for me. Bell bottom pants and celebrities. I served Alice Cooper, Della Reese, Joe Namath, Jerry Lee Lewis, and met dozens of really neat people. I kept hearing about Key West and how laid back it was. After a year at the Zoo, I had enough saved up to open my own taco stand. Or, so I thought. A couple of trips to Key West and I found a location on the 200 block of Duval.  My good friend Dave Moran who I met in Lauderdale came down to help me. I had no idea he was a master carpenter and I owe everything to him. A lot of help from friends like Dave and a lot of luck and I got open in March 1974. After years of planning to get open, I could not accept that from now on life was just one taco after another. That was the day I realized I had to keep opening stores or I'm going to go nuts. And finally, all those accounting classes started paying off. The second store was in Gainesville across from the University, 500 miles away. The third was in Cocoa Beach, 350 miles north. The next three were in Key West: 501 Duval, Sloppy Joe's, and Key Plaza Shopping Center. The last two were Satellite Beach and Merritt Island next to Cocoa Beach. In 1981, I married Cindy the love of my life. We immediately had two lovely daughters and I realized right then and there, this is the only really important thing I will do in my life.  One at a time, the stores disappeared as the rent went through the roof. Cocoa Beach was the last to close in 1996. The Gainesville store is still operating under the name Burrito Brothers. It's across from the University of Florida football stadium, The Swamp. One thing I realized after 50 years in business, the fun is in creating, not maintaining.  The Democrats have sealed control of the Senate with the win in Nevada. The win small, less that 1/2 point. Whatever, a win is a win. The Democrats now 50 seats. Republicans, 49. The Georgia run off next month. Regardless of who wins, the Democrats will retain control because of the Vice-President's vote. Despondency is upon me. Syracuse lost again last night. Blown away by Florida State 38-3. After winning the first 6 games, Syracuse has lost the last 4. The second half of the season has been a slow death. Enjoy your Sunday!

High Inflation May Already Be Behind Us
Tumblr media
High inflation has captured the headlines as of late particularly as CPI recently hit the highest levels since 1981. Some are even suggesting we will face hyperinflation. However, while inflation is certainly present, the question to be answered is whether it will remain that way, or if the worst may already be behind us? To answer that question, let’s define the difference between an inflationary increase and hyperinflation. “Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon. It is always and everywhere a result of too much money, of a more rapid increase of money, than of output. Moreover, in the modern era, the important next step is to recognize that today the governments control the quantity of money so that, as a result, inflation in the United States is made in Washington and nowhere else.“ Milton Friedman’s statement is backed up by the chart below of the M2 money supply compared to inflation (with a 9-month lag). So, where did that surge in the money supply come from? Massive government bailout programs sent money directly to households that far exceeded economic activity. With production shutdown, demand dwarfed supply. However, what we are experiencing is high inflation. “Hyperinflation” is not a threat. At least not yet. “Hyper-inflation comes from a complete loss of faith in a currency from the threat of losing a war (Weimer Republic), an economic collapse, or some other catastrophic event. The U.S., even with all of our economic ills and woes, is still the safest place, in terms of liquidity, depth, and strength, to store excess reserves. The near historic low yield on government treasuries tells the story here.” – Real Investment Show With that understanding, we can now examine what comes next in terms of high inflation. The Peak Of Inflation May Be In When discussing the inflation rate it is critical to remember that we measure the “rate of inflation” on an annualized basis. In other words, compare the current level of inflation index to the index level 12-months prior. That calculation provides the annual “rate,” or rate of change, in the consumer price index. With the latest read of the inflation index, the annual rate of change was 8.2%. Here is where it gets interesting. If we assume that homeowners’ equivalent rent, food, gasoline, energy, and healthcare costs all remain at the current elevated rate into 2023, inflation will fall back to 2%. Such is because as we move forward, the inflation index will be calculated against rising index levels. The result will be lower levels of the “inflation rate” even though the cost of goods and services had no change in price. While that seems confusing, it is just a function of the underlying math. Evidence Of Disinflation However, the decline in the inflation rate may be substantially more prominent as the Federal Reserve begins its rate hike campaign and reduction of its balance sheet. Already, higher interest rates are slowing the housing market, and high prices are creating demand destruction. Already, consumer confidence is dropping sharply as expectations for consumers are collapsing. Of course, that lack of confidence leads to decisions to consume less as the cost of living increases outstrip wage growth. The decline in demand is showing up in the Cass Freight Index. As Bloomberg’s Simon White writes, real economic activity in the U.S. is slowing sharply, and: “This is showing up in lower demand for new trucks and autos, and a tailing off in freight volumes, leaving transport stocks facing more downside.” Not surprisingly, heavy truck sales in the U.S. are, as Simon notes, a “Very good leading indicator of economic activity, with 65% of the dollar value of North American freight moved by trucks. But new truck sales have been falling sharply, now at -23% on an annual basis. New auto sales are falling at a similar rate. Truck and auto sales combined are falling at a rate previously only associated with recessions. As shown in the latest CPI report, auto sales are indeed dropping sharply. Deflation Likely A Bigger Issue For The Fed The surge in “artificial inflation,” from the flood of liquidity against a supply shortage, will revert to a disinflationary trend. Debt and demographics will continue to drive deflationary pressures leading to a reversal of the inflation trade. As the fear of inflation rose, investors piled into the commodity trade. While commodity prices rose due to the supply shortage, the reversal of that liquidity will undermine those assets. (Commodity prices track interest rates) As we showed recently, the reversal in commodity prices will worsen if the Fed proceeds with its monetary tightening. “Historically, when the Fed hikes rates or tapers its balance sheet, oil prices decline from slower growth and deflationary pressures.” – Real Investment Report 01-21-22 Many continue to compare the current economic environment to the 1970’s inflationary spike. However, the impact of demographics and debt are vastly different. Throughout 2022, disinflation will likely be the most significant threat to the markets and economy. Such was the point in early 2021 in “Sugar Rush.”  Unless the Government remains committed to a continuous stimulus, once the “sugar rush” fades, the economy will “crash” back to its organic state. The bottom line is that America can’t grow its way back to prosperity on the back of social assistance. The average American is fighting to make ends meet as their living cost rises while wage growth remains stagnant. The 3-Ds suggest inflation will give way to deflation, economic strength will weaken, and over-zealous investors will once again get left holding the bag. Original Article Here: Read the full article
