ー He kisses her hand softly. ー

Yui: ( “Mother”… )

( So, all those run-ins with Ryuuto-san… )

( He was working with Reiji-san’s uncle – his father – after all… )

You have pieced it together? It is about time.

Ryuuto was such a good boy, keeping a close eye on you and Reiji. It’s all thanks to him that my return worked out so smoothly.

Ryuuto: It was far easier this way, than to rely on Father…

I am just grateful the wait is over; To think, he was selfishly holding off on telling me, however, of your return…

Yui: Ufufu~! Nothing much has changed between you, it seems.

ー The door opens, and a tray is wheeled in. ー

Reiji: …My apologies for the wait.

Ryuuto: Aah, finally. Pour us some tea, won’t you, Reiji?

Reiji: You cannot even do that much yourself? Good grief...

Although, if you insist, I do suppose it saves me the potential clean-up should you spill the tea yourself.

Yui: ( Reiji-san, you… actually went and brewed them tea? )

ー He pours two cups. ー

You know, I was beginning to wonder where you had gone. I hope you didn’t detour past your laboratory, to lace our drinks with something.

I surely hope you do not expect me to fall for that trick again.

Reiji: … …

Ryuuto: …You suspect he has, Mother?

Yui: There is only one way to find out, isn’t there? I’ll need someone to test my tea for me, before I even think of taking a sip.

Ryuuto: Allow me.

Reiji: Be my guest.

ー He makes a reach for the cups. ー

Yui: No, no. Not you, Ryuuto.

( Wha… Not Reiji-san, surely! )

Why not? Whoever better than the one who brewed it himself?

If Beatrix’ son is skilled with anything, Mother, it is his hands; Anything could have been slipped in, in the blink of an eye, you know.

Reiji: … …

Yui: Oh, hesitation? Perhaps you were onto something~?

Ryuuto: …Enough of this. If I may, I insist.

ー Ryuuto now takes a sip of her cup. ー

Reiji: … …

Ryuuto: …It seems as if we were overly cautious.

Just to be safe, please, allow me another taste, Mother…

ー He sips it again. ー

Yui: ( For Reiji-san to hesitate, he must have done something… )

( Did he really spike it again? )

I think I’ll see for myself. Ryuuto… come closer.

ー Cordelia kisses Ryuuto. ー

Reiji: …!!

Yui: ( Ryuuto-san’s lips… on mine! )

( C-Cordelia! What are you…!? )

ー Ryuuto shares the tea with her through the kiss. ー

( The tea, Ryuuto-san is… p-pushing it right past my lips, into my mouth!! )

ー Cordelia slowly pulls away now. ー

Reiji: …Well? Have I earnt an apology for your distrust?

Yui: ( He didn’t even bat an eye at what happened, just now…? )

…Fufu, let us not get ahead of ourselves. You have a ways to go before someone like yourself is “trustworthy”. However…

I do commend your brewing skills. That was delicious.

Reiji: Thank you.

Yui: In the end, there wasn’t any reason to worry.

Ryuuto: It never hurts to be overly cautious, with something like this.

Reiji: Well, then. I’ll be returning to my notes, if you need nothing else.

Yui: Just a moment. There is an awful lot to catch up on with Ryuuto, before I see him off… Although, I’d hate for you to miss out on it.

Why don’t you stay? It wouldn’t hurt to involve yourself in a little bit of gossip, after all?

Reiji: I must decline, I have no interest in engaging with whispers behind closed doors.

That bad habit is far more suited to your side of the family.

i love these two specifically so much shin being a megane is completely coincidental because i never had any intentions to like him but after seeing him as the villain in other routes it made me get really interested in him and his dark fate and lost eden routes really seal the deal

// I’m making this post, as a result of seeing way too much hate and misinfo regarding every character. Nobody stops anyone from voicing their opinion but the need to degrade a character, while providing BAD reasons or stating incorrect/out-of-context facts about them only for the sake of internet validation, is such a loser move.

We’re all in this fandom to have fun and even if you have something negative to say about a character you don’t like, keep it to yourself or in private with your friends.

Ayato:

“I don’t like Ayato, he’s overrated”, omg you’re just sooo different! Definitely not like other girls/guys!

Everyone is allowed to dislike whatever they want but if Ayato is your least/one of your least favorite DL characters, then your opinion ISN’T valid. This is a franchise full of abusive characters and he’s literally the most heroic love interest. Why would you hate the hero…?

“He’s dumb and annoying”, says the person who spends their time insulting FICTIONAL characters. 1) Japanese fans like dumb characters, since they come off as endearing; 2) Ayato outdid everyone throughout the routes.

He did more good than all of his brothers and saying that X, Y or Z deserves the main role more, is fake fan behavior because at this point you’re just setting up your favs.

Kanato:

No, you’re not cool for calling him ugly. It’s okay if you’re not into that type of characters but his design is not bad at all.

“He had no development”, he does in CL. It’s not major but it can still be visible.

The whole Teddy thing might be annoying to some of you, but his fans get why he acts that way. Let’s not forget that he is a victim of neglect.

Yes, he was sexually exploited too. Don’t forget this x2.

Laito:

“I hate Laito so much, he was so cruel in HDB 😢”; stop living in the past and move on already.

His development shouldn’t be overlooked only because your opinion about him was formed on something that came out more than 10 years ago.

He’s still the most fascinating DL character and I get that he might make some of you feel uncomfortable but don’t project your triggers on a character that’s merely made after a trope.

Shu:

No, it’s not Shu’s fault for the way Reiji acted. Envy is never a good reason to hurt someone.

“Shu roasts the heroine the most!”, I get that it’s rude but his insults are actually funny?? A bunch of people will like him for being brutally honest or a jerk because it’s literally a game for players with masochistic fantasies. They WANT to be roasted by good-looking men. That’s the point.

“Shu is lazy and stupid, he’s the only one who failed his school year”, genuine question: If you were an immortal creature that doesn’t need food or sleep to survive, would you still care about grades? Besides, he’s really smart.

“Shu doesn’t care about Yuma, he just feels guilty”, in LE he sacrificed himself for him and reincarnated merely because he wished to meet Yuma again and get on well with him in another life—

Reiji:

“He hurt Shu and Yuma”, well yeah but he was shown plenty of times regretting it and trying to fix things. Stop reminding this to Reiji stans because that conflict is already closed.

“He is so mean in other routes”, obviously?? If you don’t teach him how to love, he won’t suddenly act nice towards anyone.

Without him Yui would fail her tests and the Sakamaki household would be in chaos.

Subaru:

“W-What do you mean baby Tsundere is not soft innocent virgin boy? 🥺”; he has never been like that, that’s how YOU perceived him. Stop acting so shocked every time Subaru does something bad because he’s still a vampire after all??

Also, why are so many people reducing his character to Kou and/or Yui—? He’s much more than that and has his own interests, struggles, likes, dislikes, and so on.

“He’s irrelevant”; Diabolik Lovers has 13 love interests, they can’t make everyone extremely important to the general plot. Just enjoy a character as it is, it’s not that hard.

Ruki:

The cat jokes were funny when the Meow Meow Vampire art came out but MOVE ON. I hate that scene and Ruki was in the wrong but come on now, that’s not even the worst thing he has done and MB happened in 2013.

I understand not liking Ruki as a person, because he’s mostly not a good one, but this doesn’t mean he’s not a good character.

“Ruki deserved what happened to him in the past because he was cruel towards everyone”; while I agree that Karma hit him, I wouldn’t say any child really deserves to go through that. He was just a spoiled brat, who most likely wasn’t taught by his parents about modesty or kindness.

Kou:

“He was so cruel in MB 😣”, and HE HAD DEVELOPMENT! He’s not the same anymore, nobody is.

“He overreacts”, sometimes he’s not in the wrong and has all rights to be angry.

Kou isn’t afraid of going against Ruki, even if he’s the brother he admires the most, as long as he knows that what Ruki is doing isn’t good.

Yuma:

“He beat Yui up in the MB bad ending!😡😡”, it’s a bad ending for a reason, lol.

Pretty reminder that Yuma always tries to help others with Kou and Azusa, and was even willing to save the ghouls in LE.

“Yuma doesn’t care about Shu”, did we play the same game or…?

Azusa:

“Azusa is so horrible, he threw Teddy in the fire!”; and he only did it to save Yui, it was not intentional.

While not all his actions are good, keep in mind that he never means any harm and is overall such a sweet guy.

“He is too clingy”; I know that might not be everyone’s cup of tea but is it really worth hating a character just for wanting affection?

The Tsukinamis and Kino:

“They were too easy to defeat in DF!”; Dark Fate wasn’t entirely about them to begin with. Most routes focused on the boys’ internal struggles with their trauma and how to move past it.

“Kino is sometimes mean for the sake of being mean”; it’s almost as if he’s the ✨villain✨

It’s dumb questioning the morals of characters supposed to have an antagonistic role.

“Kino hurt Ayato in LE”; out of all characters who have wronged Ayato, at least Kino felt bad and wanted to apologize.

Yui:

“She’s dumb and ugly”; Japanese fans literally love her for being an idiot because it wouldn’t be fun to see the heroine being the best at everything or not making mistakes at all. Plus, her design is definitely not ugly.

Stop creating your own version of Yui in your head and ending up disappointed when she doesn’t act the way you expect her to. No, Yui is not OOC for liking being bitten, having a low learning ability or saying things she shouldn’t in the wrong moments. Nobody is perfect and everyone has their own kinks and flaws.

“She’s too innocent”; she’s not?? If you really want to see her thirsty, go play Ayato’s routes, especially the heaven scenarios.

“She’s weak”, she’s the opposite. Yui is one of the most mentally strong DL characters.

I can’t understand people who hate on heroines when they’re present in all routes and are the most positive characters.

Moni's Ships Ranking

OK let's go with my ranking for all DL ships. All these ranking is my personal opinion and nobody have to be agree with it. So be respectful and don't impose your opinions to me. Thank you ^^

1_ Shu Sakamaki x Yui Komori

This ship is my comfort ship. From all stories even out of DL fandom. Their relationship is so adorable. Shu is so loyal to Yui. And he improved a lot just because of Yui. He learnt to love and care for people who are important to him. And even when Yui was blind Shu didn't give up on her and continues his love to her. He afraid of fire but jumped into fire to save Yui. And even in Ruki's lost eden bad ending Shu protected Yui after she lost her mental health. This man is great. His love to Yui is so adorable.

2_ Ruki Mukami x Yui Komori

I love Ruki so much and in my opinion he can be best boyfriend for Yui in some ways. Ruki and Yui both love books and I can see they spending their times on reading books and sharing their ideas together. Ruki really improved so much. When he found out that he doesn't want to be snake and he wants to love Yui and betrayed Karlheinz shows that he can change so much because of Yui. And I love how Ruki calls Yui Angel. Because she really is.

3_ Carla Tsukinami x Yui Komori

I guess you all see that I have a soft side for older brother T_T . Carla is Victorian king to me and I really love historical and Victorian stories. Even though Carla started very rough but we see how much he improved. He always said that Yui taught him kindness and I really adore their ship. Carla learned to Love just because of Yui.

4_ Subaru Sakamaki x Yui Komori

I think this ship is already enough popular. Both in Japanese and western fandom. After Shuyui this ship is second in Japan and I don't blame them. Subaru is so adorable and he really loves Yui to the point he can't live without Yui. His tsundere and soft side towards Yui always make me cry so loud T_T. Pure angel with another angel is best.

5_ Kino Sakamaki x Yui Komori

After reading lost Eden I suddenly trapped by Kino. He is just a cutie and he needs more attention by fandom. When he said he loves Yui even more than his own life I felt my heart was going crazy. He is my baby boy. And I love his ship with Yui.

6_ Yuma Mukami x Yui Komori

Baby bear with his tiny girlfriend. Shut up their relationship is God. They are so fucking adorable together I can't T_T and let's accept Yuma has saddest bad endings. Whenever he loses Yui, he apologize for failing to protect her. This boy is really angel and nobody can change my mind.

7_ Laito Sakamaki x Yui Komori

Let me be honest guys. I have a very big dirty mind and Laito's completes it so well. TBH I didn't like Laito's HDB route. It was too cruel for my baby girl Yui. But let's accept Laito improved almost more than all characters.

8_ Kou Mukami x Yui Komori

Well Kou is kinda like Laito. He was so sadistic at first. But he saw Yui as his blue sky and I adore it so much. If he tries more he can be a really good boyfriend.

9_ Shin Tsukinami x Yui Komori

My feelings towards them is a little complicated. I need to know them more but still I like them so much.

10_ Reiji Sakamaki x Yui Komori

Don't blame me. Reiji is always against my baby Shu so I can't love him that much. But his ship with Yui is so fucking hot. Really daddy.

11_ Azusa Mukami x Yui Komori

Azusa is literally an angel. I almost love him as much as I love Yui. But you know his ship with Yui is so soft and cute. I can't help my dirty mind but I need sexy ships more. Still in my personal opinion Azusa is the only one who really deserves Yui.

12_ Kanato Sakamaki x Yui Komori

Kanato is not my type. Most of the times he scares me and I think Yui has very hard time with him. Of course Kanato grows but poor Yui is really tired. I hope Kanato grows more.

13_ Ayato Sakamaki x Yui Komori

Sorry not sorry but I even don't ship Ayato with Yui. Because I don't like him. He always gets on my nerves and he is not really my cup of tea. I still respect his fans and I know he has a lot and I ask them to respect me too. I think rejet completely forgot about other boys and everything is about Ayato just because they wanna make him look popular and big????? Sorry but Ayato really doesn't need this attention by rejet. He already has enough attention and rejet is making other boys to be forgotten. I really don't like it. His personality is not my type. Sorry.

Honestly i feel like u start talking more about shuyui so the post won't end. U have a way of using words and I like your description.

omg thank you so much anon!! now that you have said it-

one of the best developments of Shu was his view on his brothers and other families. We don't see him interacting or giving attention to what his brothers' do, and yes it's probably because of everything that happened to him in the past. In HDB and MB unless it's his route he shows a very lazy and not caring attitude BUT after DF in EVERY route Shu was seen showing concern for everyone, even Mukamis(Yuma's DF route) plus we also got his own perspective of things after yui came into his life about how he used to deal with things before by detaching himself and he still tries to do that but Yui's presence won't let him because she is precious and his family, and also it's not only yui, but he goes out his way for the the cat they adopted in DF. This proves how unlike in HDB and MB where there was only Yui, Shu is starting to accept other people too as precious and protect them.

In his LE vampire end, when Reiji sacrificed himself to save Yuma, Shu can be seen very affected by Reiji's death and his sad monologue appeared on how whenever such things happen he always detaches himself to hear nothing, feel nothing, think nothing just to stabilize his emotions and lessen the mental burden.

In CL he even protected everyone going out of his own way and laziness after recovering his memories.

DF was definitely a turning point for each and every character of DL fandom, even for the Tsukinamis in their own route.

Shu does everything for Yui, even the littlest things even if it is a "drag" or "bothersome" for him, like how he went to awaken Yui in that one Maniac (between 1-5). he said that it was something she would love and glee about after all they are family. even Yui was surprised and happy by his such behaviour. He even waited for her for hours to select the couple mugs in a mall until she was satisfied with the design and everything.

yeah you can't give me reasons to hate shu because he has developed a lot. he is still lewd, lazy, teasing, unbothered but there is change in how he sees compared to first game and I think time plays a great role as the more time he spent with yui who always made him do things he don't want to or bothersome for him, he started to see things differently.

Yui really helped all of them out a lot and that was one massive development because we know how each and every one of them was in the start.

Like even Carla who hates vampires changes his perspective on them even though he still hates them to some degree. he gave up on his revenge against karlheinz because he realised yui>>>>>>>>>

Yui is the best girl and one of the best FLs out there (⁠≧⁠▽⁠≦⁠)♡

I don't remember where I read this, but is it true that Cordelia is attracted to Beatrix's sons?

On Reiji's HDB route Cordelia admitted that she found Reiji very physically attractive. She also tried to seduce Shuu in his HDB After Story to have sex with her.

I guess her attraction to them is because in some way, they both might remind her of Karlheinz. I have always believed that Cordelia envied Beatrix, Cordelia may have been the first wife, but Beatrix gave Karl his first two sons, plus both Reiji and Shuu are prodigies, extremely talented, strong and intelligent, everything Cordelia wished her own children to be.

Your analyzes are really helpful and so valuable to the community. It was from your latest analysis of Reiji that I got motivated to research the boys more thoroughly and became very knowledgeable about behavioral issues. But as I replayed each HDB and MB route, I suddenly realized something.

Each of the brothers is very different, but they all seem to share a lot in common when it comes to punishment and obedience. Despite being raised by such different types of mothers, many of the brothers use one common control tactic - a "reward" for obedience or punishment for disobedience. Of course, some of them can take the reward as such, while others have it quite twisted. And it seems that this practice really works on Yui, because this way they train her to obey without a second thought so that she can to avoid the pain, but I got the impression that they didn't see it that way. For most of the development of Yui's "relationship" with one of the boys, this goes to an extreme and eventually she starts to lose the line between pain and pleasure and things get complicated. But I wonder if they are doing this to make her a masochist? As far as I am informed, a man cannot suddenly become a masochist, but is born with such a tendency, and over time, so to speak, learns to awaken it. Does this mean that Yui is actually really a masochist, and it's not just words when brothers say so?

Of course I know your focus is mainly Reiji and I have no idea if you've played any of the other routes to you know. Also, Reiji isn't as mentally screwed up as Cordelia's sons and he acts very carefully and thinks his actions out more than his brothers. But since you also mentioned this reward and punishment tactic, I would be very happy if you could give me your opinion on the subject.

This is a very astute observation! You are right with each brother engaging in Operant Conditioning (or punishment and reward) even though they each have different mothers; I don't think this is coincidental. From what we see of their mothers, it can be implied that the behaviour is learned - we predominantly see this with Cordelia and her general behaviour, but we also see this with Beatrix and Shuu (I would mention Christa but I feel I lack a thorough understanding of her character). From each of the brothers, to the mothers and by extension even the Mukamis, they all seem to exhibit this form of behaviour; the only way for this to occur [beyond coincidence] is for there to be an interlinking variable. In this case, our good friend Karlheinz - CEO of Beans, Means, Heinz.

From what we learn from Ayato's and Laito's routes, it's implied that Cordelia met Karheinz when she was young - in other words, he preyed on her for her blood, and for her heritage. This can imply that Cordelia may have, in fact, been groomed (for Karl's plan) - since it can be implied that he too engages in the punishment and reward system. This is mainly theoretical, however, from Cordelia's extensive collection of fine jewellery - that, (if I'm right) come from Karlheinz (and can even be implied to be 'love bombing'). We know that Cordelia becomes self-destructive and abusive when she isn't with Karl, possibly implying that his time and gifts act as the "reward" - whereas him marrying Beatrix, Christa and generally discarding Cordeila acts as the "punishment". Cordelia possibly learned her behaviour from Karl and imprinted it onto her children - a sort of "cause and effect" if you will - whereas I've implied Beatrix to suffer from some form of generational trauma; though Karl may have also [possibly] used Operant Conditioning on Beatrix, and Christa, too.

And yes, you're right - some brothers are generous with the rewards and do something that actively makes Yui happy, such as Ayato, Azusa and Kou. However, brothers such as Laito, Kanato and Reiji present a more twisted version of 'reward' - such as Laito forcing himself on Yui [in basically every chapter let's be real] or Kanato wanting to turn Yui into a wax corpse - but that's heavily due to their response to their trauma.

You're also right about Yui being easily 'trained' via Operant Conditioning. However, I think this is a precaution - a means to demonstrate complete and utter control - and like I've mentioned with Reiji, he spares no time in enforcing that; meaning that he's likely done this hundreds of times before (and most likely so have the others). In other words, the Operant Conditioning may just be a standard routine among the brothers. I do like your interpretation that they're doing this so that Yui can avoid their punishments - it definitely puts them in a more sentimental light (and I appreciate that you've read it like this). For characters like Subaru, Shuu, Ayato (and even Kanato) I can definitely see this interpretation - as punishing Yui is more trouble than it's worth; they want her to behave and do exactly as they want.

However, for characters like Reiji and Laito, they particularly enjoy pushing Yui around, they enjoy making her slip up so they can punish her. I see this as more of a demonstration of power and control - as well as a boost to their ego. Reiji and Laito are two characters that lacked control and authority in their childhood - implying that their actions towards Yui are possibly a way to achieve that. For characters such as these, I don't belive that they want Yui to avoid pain in the beginning. Throughout the mid-way section and the end of their respective routes, they don't delight in Yui's pain - it's only in the beginning, and I think this is due to their trauma-response. In other words, the abused become the abuser - they delight in Yui's pain because she feels a physical manifestation of their mental/emotional pain. It's sadism at its most ironic.

So yes, I agree with you on that front - I don't think they see Yui's 'training' in a pet-like way - instead I believe it's a fail-safe. It's a way for each brother to be in complete control, while having the security that Yui can't escape, act out or leave them. At the end of the day, each brother values and desires affection and acceptance - using this form of control over Yui guarantees that. It's a twisted way for them to garner the emotional security they need.

However, I don't believe that any of the brothers use Operant Conditioning to actively or purposefully make Yui a masochist. From what I know, researched and from my own experiences, no one is born a sadist or a masochist. Instead, I believe it to be a learned response. Sadism and masochism are responses to pain - I don't believe people are intrinsically born to enjoy pain - it's called 'pain' for a reason. However, and this is drawn upon my own experiences, I believe that sadism and masochism arise from the exposure to suffering.

If you're exposed to constant and unyielding pain, there's only a small selection of responses to choose from. You can't run from it, you can't hide from it - fighting it only makes it worse - therefore, the only way to deal with the relenting pain is to accept it, tolerate it...enjoy it. I touch on this in my MB analysis regarding Azusa and Yui (and how Azusa is a "dark parallel" to Yui regarding this exact topic). Since the female brain doesn't full mature until mid-twenties, I can afford to take some liberties regarding Yui.

When you're exposed to heavy abuse and physical abuse as a child, your brain does funny things. Now, I'm only talking from my own experiences - so any other views on this are greatly appreciated. But like I said, when you're exposed to pain at a young age, your brain tries to rationalise it and find an effective response. If it's constant, unyielding and inescapable, you can either fight it - and in some cases, make it worse - or you can accept it. When you're a child, or a young adult, you're constantly told the message that you should enjoy life; that you have nothing to sad about or anything worth crying over. Notice how I used the word: enjoy. This is intentional because this is where the brain begins to warp. So, instead of crying about the pain, you instead learn to see the positives - that whoever's inflicting the pain is giving you 'special treatment' for example. This is what we see with Azusa and his attachment to Justin.

People inflict pain because they want to see you suffer; from how my brain responded to that, the only way to combat that is to enjoy it. Once the pain's over - or it's finally stopped for good - that sentiment doesn't go away; instead it finds something to latch onto. Think of your brain as one big circuit board, and the masochism as a cord. Once the pain stops for an extensive period, that cord becomes unplugged - and another cord is plugged in its place; the circuit board fills up. The masochism is still there, the cord hasn't disappeared; it's dangling, and it needs something to latch onto. Once you grow older, your brain develops more plugs, more sockets for different cords and branches that need to be filled in - one of those plugs is sexuality. Now obviously, sadism and masochism aren't intrinsically sexual, they are both sexual and non-sexual: the sexual being self-explanatory and the non-sexual being oriented around amusement - again, it's irony being displayed in its most painful form. But I digress, once sexuality opens itself up to the brain - like with Yui - the unplugged cord of masochism has a socket to wire itself into.

The point I'm getting at is that I believe masochism - and Yui's masochism - to be a trauma-response. It acts as a way for her to 'deal' with the pain - however, since her brain is underdeveloped, her mentality surrounding it warps and distorts. The line between pain and pleasure does become blurred. In other words, it can be implied that Yui's masochism (and Azusa's) are coping mechanisms that have become warped and distorted over time.

Note that Yui never starts the game(s) as a masochist. If anything, she hates the pain. Yet by the end of the game, she is a masochist. She's masochistic due to the severe mental stress she's under and the vile abuse she endures - and her brain can't revert back due to the extent of the distortion. Routes such as Reiji's and Laito's hinge on Yui's mentality unravelling; becoming fragile and mouldable - this is how the masochism is able to infiltrate, it's a coping mechanism (but instead of being able to abandon it, it's latched onto another part of her brain, her sexuality).

Furthermore, when the brothers refer to Yui as a masochist, it could be implied to be an exaggeration, a way to riddle Yui's mind with stress, denial and self-doubt. In other words, it could be implied that they're gaslighting her to sow doubt and make her more susceptible to their mental manipulation. Additionally, it could be implied that they're enforcing masochism onto Yui so that they can enact their own sadism onto her without any complications - to make her a 'willing victim' if you will. In essence, the brothers could call Yui a masochist in order to imprint their own views and needs onto her - sadism and masochism is the giving and receiving of pain. It can be implied that the brothers' sadistic tendencies act as an outlet for their trauma; they need a recipient to take the pain they're giving - that being Yui. However, the brothers' sadism and Yui's masochism doesn't match up.

The brothers begin their routes revelling in Yui's pain, yet they don't end their routes with the same sentiment. Yui, however, starts the routes trying to escape the pain, only to yield to it - and by the end of the route, revel in it. And I'm not just strictly talking about her own pain either. In Reiji's HDB manservant ending, we see Yui delight in the pain and subservience of others. She gains control over Reiji, in which she belittles and emasculates him, all while playing the role of 'Cordelia' - and in Kanato's HDB manservant ending, we see Yui brutally (and sadistically) murders the other brothers, revelling in the affection she believes she'll get because of it. In essence, sadism and masochism are learned responses or coping-mechanisms (gone wrong), but that's just my opinion.

You're also right, Reiji isn't as screwed up as the triplets, and he does think out his every move - painstakingly so. The only other brother I'd say who comes close is Laito,since they're both highly manipulative and predominately enforce Operant Conditioning - with Reiji’s focus being on control and Laito's being on sex. When Yui behaves, they each reward her in non-material ways - for Laito, it's sex or physical affection, and for Reiji, it's remedies when Yui's sick, her favourite meals etc. What they both 'reward' Yui with is their vulnerability. In other words, manipulative characters like Reiji, Laito, Ruki and Carla enforce Operative Conditioning to gain the comfort of control; only once that boundary is established do they 'mellow'. In other words, the need for punishment and reward is a basis wherein the brothers can build a relationship that they can thrive in.

My OC for the story I was having a hard time coming up with a name or specific look for her, so I was thinking maybe she could just be nameless or a self insert like Y/N L/N but I'm still deciding...

I have noticed that the boys have been written more fluffy in recent years and don't get me wrong I love it but sometimes I do wish there was a little bit more content focusing on their more darker side so if your looking for more DL fanfiction like that @jardinsdeminuit has a wonderful one shot selection of fics on their ao3

My personal favourite was "Shackled" 🤭

"The Switch" by Rinster is truly one of the best DL fanfiction I have ever read. The story telling, the boy characterization, the fact that it's choices based, meaning your actions can have consequences it's still ongoing, but so far it has 74 chapters, which should be plenty for now!

If you're looking for art that really captures the mood of the different routes, @ausd has amazing art that captures that chilling feeling, especially laitos route mmm CHEFS KISS everytime I look at their art it's just!

If you want some analysis that'll make you cry read "The Fall of Yui Komori: A Partial Analysis of Laito’s HDB Route" by @everything-laito I swear after reading this I needed to put my phone down and take a breath of fresh air it definitely gave me a new found perspective on just how strong Yui it's just so good.

@carlatsukinamistolemyhamsandwich also makes analysis, but her fanfictions MWAH they capture Shin sadistic side perfectly my personal favourite is Siren’s Call (Siren!Shin x Reader One Shot) (this one is not a shin fic but it's my guilty pleasure Bathtub Merman - Merman!Azusa Mukami x Reader One Shot you can tell I have a thing for under water creatures)

@dixbolik-lovers does all the boys and her Aus are to die for, and the fanfiction can be found on ao3 and Wattpad as well.

Admin's Thoughts About the Mukami Brothers' MB Routes Part 1: Mukami Yuuma

I will publish these in the same order I originally played the Mukami routes in More, Blood.

When my friend introduced me to Diabolik Lovers, she told me that the Mukamis were "the wrong family" and "no one is supposed to like them". I didn't have high expectations because of that, but these days the Mukamis are my favorite family. My friend called me a cheater because of that. 🤣

Yuuma was the first Mukami whose route I played. I got so annoyed with him on Reiji's route that I figured I wouldn't like him. Hence I wanted to get his route out of my list.

But the funny thing, Yuuma warmed me up rather nicely and fast, too. He's grumpy and violent, yes, and so damn rude, but I can see he has a golden heart. For some reason, I have noted in my gaming diary that Yuuma tore Yui's clothes several times. I surely hope that he bought her new ones, at least. He probably didn't.

Soon, Yui noticed that the Mukamis seem to be closer to each other as a family than the Sakamakis, and well, I feel that way too. Their family dynamics are interesting and sometimes heartwarming to watch, even though they have fights, too.

What I really liked was Yuuma's way of stuffing things into Yui's mouth. He gave her sugar from mouth to mouth and fed her with peaches. And the fact that Yuuma cooked for Yui is so sweet. To be honest, I have forgotten that scene, but apparently, I have written about it in my diary. 🤭 I should play the route again.

I also liked how Yuuma wants to change the world for the better and more equal place. He opens up a bit about his past to Yui, which is a good thing if you ask me.

Still, I would have hoped that he wasn't so violent toward Yui on his own route... I got annoyed by him on Reiji's route because he hit Yui there. I hoped he wouldn't do that on his own route, but, oh well, it's Diabolik Lovers for a reason.

Yuuma's backstory with Shuu is one of the most interesting points on his route, and I was a bit sad that they didn't makeup during the route. Also, I got even more pissed with Reiji because he didn't allow Yuuma to even speak to Shuu after Yuuma had remembered what happened in the past.

Another interesting revelation on Yuuma's route was his virginity. Before that, I had assumed that all Diaboys had banged their prey whenever they got a chance, but not Yuuma. I honestly like the idea that Yui was his first.

Even though I had mixed feelings toward Yuuma, in the end, I enjoyed his route a lot and totally loved the After Story. He is adorable with his manners of stuffing things into Yui's mouth and with being a blushing grumpy. Also, the marriage thing and the talk about future plans made me teared up.

Yuuma gave me a better start with the Mukamis than I assumed. He didn't have my heart completely, but he greatly warmed me up. And while the Sakamakis were the ones that kind of lured me in (since I played HDB first), Yuuma pushed me toward my current hyper-fixation with the series and lured me into spending more time with the Mukamis. Such a sweet, grumpy boy~

Meet Sayori Makina, nickname Sayo

She currently has two stories and a crossover:

Tainted Eve, which is the original canon story her backstory is based off of. Her love interest is Kou. In the alternate version where she is sent to live with the Sakamakis, it is a triangle between Reiji and Laito.

and

Sayo's Route, which is written in game script format and is inspired by events that take place in the DBL games. The plan is to write HDB, More Blood, and Dark Fate. I don't think I'll go beyond those three games.

Crack Obey Me! Crossover

This idea takes place as a bad end to the love triangle between Laito and Reiji in the alternate version of Tainted Eve. Sayo does not accept Reiji’s feelings. Laito does not know this, however, and only knows Reiji tried to steal her away. He kills her in a jealous rage.

Sayo is so hurt by this that she decides she can no longer stand living there. She confesses to Yui that she plans on leaving and asks if she wants to join. She agrees to run away together.

With her newfound knowledge of the demon world, she decides that they’ll escape to the other demon realm, Devildom. Diavolo finds them amidst their escape. At first, he is suspicious of the fact a Founder is attempting to get into the Devildom. However, he is able to tell she is telling the truth when Sayo tells him their story. He helps them settle into life in Devildom under the condition that their memories of their time living with the Sakamaki brothers be erased, so there’s no changing their minds and going back to them.

This all must have been her idea! She must have planned this from the beginning!

Richter: Beloved, take a seat… What ever is the matter?

Cordelia: That Beatrix!!

Richter: My brother’s second wife?

Cordelia: Don’t make me repeat myself; Didn’t you hear the announcement?

There is to be a ball thrown to celebrate her pregnancy.

All after I refused Karl myself. This must be her attempt to get under my skin, and… and to uproot me from my place by his side!!

Richter: Pregnancy? That woman, with Karl’s…?

Cordelia: How dare she give him his firstborn!!

Richter: …Come now, doesn’t it work out well? For us both? You said so yourself, you have always disliked the idea of children, no?

With Karlheinz’ focusing on Beatrix temporarily, the two of us areーー

Cordelia: ーーOf course! This was his idea!

Ooh, how very clever…

Well, I’ll show him! If he is going to get just anyone pregnant to try to stir something in me, I’ll only have to play along!

Richter: …Come now, allow me to ease your worries. Shall I run us a bath?

ー She embraces him. ー

Cordelia: No. That’s not at all what I want…

The only way to ease me right now, is to show me all your love, Richter. Do not even think of holding back… You’ll do that for me, won’t you?

Richter: Of course… Anything to ease you.

Cordelia: Fufu, good. He’ll be utterly furious when he finds out~

ー The flashback ends to Yui’s bedroom. ー

Yui: ( So, that is why Ryuuto-san is the odd one out… )

You should be grateful, you know.

If it wasn’t for my decision that night, with Richter, Beatrix would not have had that second opportunity to carry Karl’s children.

( If Karlheinz hadn’t tried to pressure Cordelia into having the triplets… )

( Reiji-san wouldn’t have existed… )

And, the only reason I was brought back, was because of him, too. In a way, my little mistake worked out well for the both of us.

What perfect timing it was for you to drop by. Have you anything to tell me about Reiji, or is that person still sulking after what I said?

Richter: The latter; He has cooped himself up in his laboratory.

Just by planting a few seeds of doubt in his mind, he was obviously going to work himself up, overthinking it all, fufu.

Riling these men up, keeping them wrapped around your finger as they tear each other, and themselves, apart…

It’s nothing… I was just thinking about dismissing you for now.

If you hear Reiji stir from his room, do let me know, won’t you? Otherwise, I only want to hear from you again when I call for you.

Richter: As you wish.

ー Richter takes his leave. ー

Yui: ( That is “if” he stirs. )

He will. As stubborn as he might seem, I think I’ve broken him in.

But Laito mentioned in HDB (Maniac 7) to Richter that they used to live in Eastern Europe a.k.a referring to Romania and was talking about returning there. The Sakamaki’s first lived in Romania in the Human World then were sent back to the Demon World and then after some time to Japan to find Yui because in Laito’s HDB it’s said how Yui was found in Romania but her dad returned to Japan after he got a daughter (Maniac 8). And in Reiji’s HDB Ecstasy Epilogue, Richter says:

I never thought that hunter would succeed in fleeing to this foreign, far-off land behind my back!

That foreign country was Japan, so wouldn’t that mean they all used to live in Romania at some point?

i see what you're saying, and yes it's very strongly implied that Yui is Romanian and that Yui was found in Romanian and then taken to Japan. but the Sakamaki's aren't, and i see your point, but let me explain why there's contradictory evidence.

so in maniac 07, it's translated as "That being said, when we return to Eastern Europe, those pesky hunters are lurking around" which doesn't necessarily mean they LIVED in or grew up in Romania. but even if that IS what they mean, it's important to remember that HDB and MB to CL are sort of separate? when rejet wrote HDB, they didn't think that it'd become such a big franchise. MB starts from basically where HDB starts in terms of character development, whereas games like DF and LE follow on from each other, meaning these are the games which really "matter" in terms of canon lore.

putting the rest under the cut bc it's long and there's also some minor game spoilers.

because of this, there's things which don't make sense in HDB in the context of the rest of the game. there's much more clear evidence that they grew up in the demon world. you need to consider the demon world as its own country, because it is. well, it's its own world. we learn a ton about the demon world in VC and LP, such as the vampires having their own customs, societies, and even landmarks. like i said before, they even have their own language! so when Richter says Seiji fled to a foreign land (aka Japan), that doesn't actually tell us anything about whether the Sakamaki's lived there.

even if it was "from" Romania, like i said, this lore does not follow from MB onwards. it's stated many, many times that the Sakamaki's grew up in the demon world castle and THEN got sent to Japan to find Yui, such as the panel i showed you last time.

in Yuma's dark fate, we see a tunnel which is a portal from Romania to the demon world, in which Shu wrote "ririe" which is his true name in the demon world script. meaning Shu was travelling TO Romania as a kid, not living there.

in Laito's dark fate when they all move back to the demon world, he states that being here brings back bad memories because they grew up there and that's where he has bad memories with Cordelia. other routes in DF imply the same thing; the Sakamaki's don't like being in their demon world castle because it's where all their childhood trauma is from.

this theme follows throughout LE, where everyone moves back to the demon world castle and expresses being uncomfortable. what's also funny to me is in Kino's CL, whereby Kino was collecting pictures of the demon world castle to gather info about the Sakamaki's. he then uses these pictures in the CL miniature world to remind the Sakamaki's of their childhood in order to get their memories back.

like i said before, it's best to consider the demon world as its own world and its own country. Japan is a foreign land to them, and it's best to take the information from MB to CL as canon rather than oddly specific things said in HDB, because a lot of HDB lore gets switched up once rejet realised this was going to be a multi-game series.

TL;DR- there's much, much more evidence in the games which follow each other that the Sakamaki's grew up in the demon world and then relocated to Japan. Yui is most likely Romanian, the Mukami's are Romanian and grew up there, but the Sakamaki's are not Romanian and did not grow up there.

Why does many people make it sound like the sakamaki brothers 'hate' ayato ? They literally 'hate' each other not ayato in particular , so no need to make him the victim.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to notice that and he’s definitely a HUGE victim?? Even Japanese fans are sick of Ayato’s mistreatment. Here are a few reactions I was able to find right now:

Things his brothers did to him:

- Shu used him as bait. Subaru agreed on that and they allowed him to be taken by ghouls, where he got beaten up and was almost killed. He ended up getting cursed and he had to witness his own degradation caused by it.

- Laito gaslighted him into believing that he’s not special, which was a very important theme in his MB route and the reason why he was so stubborn about ever considering someone special too.

- Laito wanted to murder him when he was younger out of envy.

- When he was going through a stressful phase, his brothers preferred mocking him instead of offering support or at least allowing him to express his point of view, which led to him leashing out due to reactive abuse.

- Reiji (and Ruki) planned his downfall out of envy by involving the Church and the Vibora clan to assassinate him and take his powers.

- His brothers manipulated him into committing svicide for “forgiveness”. They could have killed him if they really couldn’t stand looking at his face anymore, but they preferred seeing him — a person known for loving life— taking it in front of them.

These are only the most significant times; there are more. You could say to me right now: “B-But he killed his brothers in HDB!”, well yeah, that wasn't a good ending, so naturally, the characters will be more insane in that case, especially in the debut game.

Of course, I am not telling you to start hating the Sakamakis for how they treated Ayato, since they are all vampires and traumatized, so it was to be expected. Many of my favorites are from that family, but what they did to him still remains unforgivable, considering that all that stuff wasn’t unintentional and went way beyond simply being jerks.

Admin, what do you think about Reiji and Yui ship? Do you like it?

Admin: I will speak in my opinion on the wall of text below so beware that I may be a bit different from what most of you may think. Other than that, please enjoy the rant? 💀

It's OK. Like, I don't oppose nor support it. Cuz if we break it down, Yui will find herself a bit unhappy with it imo.

So, Reiji is undoubtedly the most matured Sakamaki and very ambitious, reserved, high maintenance, and most importantly, a perfectionist. He has lotta expectations for his woman as well as himself that most women aren't to his satisfaction. Yui on the other hand, a normal highschool girl, clumsy and you can see she is drastically different from what Reiji wants or is suitable of.

I'm not entitling that people liking this ship is wrong. It's cute honestly. I can see in DF, later games and in Drama CDs that they somehow complete each others. She's kind and taught Reiji of humanity. Makes him question his vampirism and more like- changed his character.

He's super romantic and that might be what some fans want. He can cook for you, he will take care of you when you're sick, he brings flowers for you, buy you a nice dinner, tea parties, ball dances yes he's surely a dreamy man. Maybe I'm a masochist for wanting the HDB Reiji everytime but damn that's what I fall in love with.

If we go back to ReijixYui, Yui may or may not be able to fulfill his needs and wants. She doesn't have a perfect grade or best manners and he surely shown to be distasteful of it in early games. He persistently tried to fix her. Lecture her and make her study lots. While he did accept her imperfections later on but what if he didn't?

That could become a problem like, Rejet kinda forced that upon them that they will become lovers overlooking Reiji's ambitious nature. I know of they stayed long enough by each others they will slowly accept it but is it alright to change one person or another just because of love?

Like, look, Yui is a normal highschool girl, a Japanese one as well. Most normal highschool girls in Japan wanna date popular, cool guys at their school like Ayato, Kou, Subaru if we look outside from Yui knowing they're ruthless vampires. While Reiji, he would be more popular with nerds or academic obsessed girls. Maybe Yui could have a crush on Reiji if she wasn't living in the Sakamaki manor and was attending Ryotei, but the chances are low.

Going back on topic, if they aren't forced to be together, they won't be. If Yui didn't choose Reiji,he wouldn't take an interest in her. But the good point is, she chose him. I bet it shook him inside even if he doesn't show or act like he doesn't care because it's a human. He cares. She smells good and a good prey he won't deny.

They're super cute honestly, in Sleeping vampire and Care for a vampire, Reiji was caring AND teasing. Yui in his route can feel like Y/N sometimes. He would just act all in the player/listener's favor and I would say I definitely enjoyed it. In the drama CDs as well. He's teasing and Yui couldn't say anythung back to him about it~

There it is on the surface but on a deeper level, she may be exhausted from doing all the best for him? The Yui we know would do that. She wants to make Reiji proud and she even said “I want to feel worthy of standing beside you” at some point. Pardon me for not remember where. I do think she would do it all for him and be who he wants her to be but is it really healthy?

So one way or another it's either Yui changes or Reiji changes. But if we look at those points where Yui became a sadist? I definitely enioyed those scenes. Reiji has switch tendencies and I honestly don't think he would mind to worship a woman he finds very worthy of it. Not shipping him with Cordelia/possessed Yui but here is my fav CGs of all time <3 and I am shoked how it's all Cordelia possessing Yui 💀But Look at HIM.

Yuiin her normal nature won't do it nor even think about doing such a thing <3 Baby is pure. My point for the whole rant being: Reiji and Yui live in a VERY different world.

I don't think Reiji is suitable for the throne, from listening to a few lost Eden CD, I noticed he.... struggles being one. And I swear Yui CAN be a queen if she wants to. She has the charm, while Reiji doesn't. He proves himself through his actions and I can't see him more than a supporting character for the King or a successful scientist 💀

Since this is asking about my opinion, I won't have to care for the already-known-facts. So bear with me, we're close to the end.

Reiji won't be able to improve himself if he's with Yui, not character wise, but knowledge wise. I can see him incredibly bored with her always asking and never him asking her. There ought to be an exchange, right? He craves for an intellectual conversation, someone who can sate his thirst for knowledge and reason with him.

Opposite attract yeah, it's cool and nice. But.... I almost can't find that one essential common interest for that trope.

Yui maybe wanna discuss about fashion magazines, go to malls and try out pretty outfits and ask him how she looks, go for not-so-formal dates, walk along the streets and jump into puddles with her partner, skip classes together, watch silly movies and much more teeny stuffs! Can you see Reiji doing them? Yes, maybe in his early ages but not anymore. I can see him being equivalent to Carla in the aspect of matureness.

I see them cute, without thinking of all these points apart. But that's pretty much all. Just cute. Not really suitable for a long term relationship. After all, Reiji will be Reiji and Yui will be Yui. Their worlds are far different to merge.

//contains route spoilers and sorry if it gets a little long 😭

there are so many cute and adorable ships, in their own way, that it took me years to select my fav ships, and here they are with rankings:

1. shinyui: aside from shin being embodiment of anger and impatience, i seriously have lost the count of how many times i have re-read his DF route, like the character development and their bonding is so wholesome. the way yui is ready to give up everything even if it means she will have to keep running away from people for the rest of her life with shin, she was ready to throw it all just so she can be with shin and shin trying to push her away so that she can be happy in a comfortable place instead of being stuck with him in his mess and get targeted. even in LE he pushed her away scared that she might get endzeit and suffer from its symptoms and he didn't want her to wither in pain and would rather let himself go through it alone than see her harmed.

2. carlayui: his character development was so smooth and amazing to watch, seeing him and yui bond over books was also adorable to watch especially it was the first time his soft side came out, i think it was also due to Yui that he gave up on taking revenge on karlheinz and instead BOWED to him just to bring yui back to life.

3. shuyui: shu giving yui queen treatment by still being his lazy self>>>>>>>> the difference in shu's behaviour can certainly be seen from the first game and the latest game despite keeping the same lazy attitude. the development is so good, if i keep talking this post will become endless.

4. reiyui: Reiji slowly opening up and protecting yui in his own rational way by planning instead of going all fighting so that she won't be hurt or get involved in this dangerous battle is the best character development. yes he was like that from the start about planning and all that, but he who was prideful and always boosted of being a vampire started to question where vampires come from and if they were originally human in DF route. and he even said that he will choose yui over being a vampire. and in his more blood vampire ending, when little Reiji said how servants are afraid of him and his inventions because his mother and brother are distant from him. Young Reiji also mentioned how he always carries his self made ointment around because his brothers are clumsy but nobody wants to use it. proof he was the best boi from the start in his own way.

5. subayui: SubaruYui was my first ship that i would do anything for. I mean my tsundere gentle boy deserves the whole world. I haven't read HDB routes much because too much violence isn't my cup of tea ik ironic but i did read manga and also his MB route, there was a lot of development I can say. and let me not get started on his DF route, not only in his route but it can be seen that subaru had soft spot/feelings for yui in others' routes too, even in kou's LE route, he didn't give up on Yui. He is very protective of her in anime too, probably why they were my first ship.

6. rukiyui: his DF route and anime is what attracted to me this ship because of all the angst. His MB route and CL route definitely didn't disappoint me. In DF he pushes away Yui to not betray karlheinz but later confronts karl as yui is the most important person and the best thing happened to him in his life aside from his brothers. In the MB he was even ready to become a snake and actually became a snake to take yui away. His CL route felt like I was reading a married couple's life and it was refreshing to read compared to all his other routes which involved angst and drama

7. kouyui: The ups and downs in his MB route for his character development was understandable especially after knowing the kind of environment he was in. there were times when I just wanted to smack kou so badly on his head for his treatment towards yui. Then i read his DF route and it was literally all angst and i think when yui said "what do you mean useless!?!???" when kou said he cannot become Adam while crying, thinking it's useless for Karl's plan but still wants to love her after almost ahem himself from the terrace and Yuma & Azusa saved him from his own pool of blood.

8. azusayui: i just recently started reading his DF route and oh my god he is literally the best boi, I'm still reading his route but he is already getting into my heart because he is such a cinnamon boy 😭.

one of my fav ships is ayayui too but the way all the above ships have raised my standards... i still love them and enjoy their content.
