Day 11: Jason Isaacs
Tumblr media
So this is my favourite version. Since seeing it, I own a copy of it, I make fan art of it, and I have fanfiction based on it….It is the one I dream of when I see Captain Hook. I also have @oh-my-favourite-piratee which has a lot of this version sliding into it.
It is from 2003.
This is mostly just a rant about why I love this version…
This movie is mentioned later in the inktober too.
More in Keep Reading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Peter Pan directed by P. J. Hogan (2003), is an authorized live-action movie adaptation. This version is notable for its directness in addressing the romantic elements between Peter (Jeremy Sumpter) and Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood). Captain Hook was portrayed by Jason Isaacs (who also plays the role of Mr. Darling), and Tinker Bell was played by Ludivine Sagnier. The $100 million film boasted state-of-the-art special effects by ILM and took nearly a year to produce in Australia, but was not a financial success for Universal Studios (USA/France/English countries) and Columbia Pictures.
It didn't become a financial success because...
Peter Pan had the misfortune of being released a week before another fantasy book adap - a little film called The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. This means audiences saved their pennies for that trilogy closer, and Pan only made $122m worldwide on its $130m budget.
To me, Lord of the Rings is another rabbit hole but it came after Peter Pan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the beautiful version of Captain James Hook we got, played by Jason Isaacs. Blue-eyed, with long black hair and facial hair plus he has his hook on his right-hand cause the actor is trained in sword-play with both hands.
Tumblr media
This is what fans are comparing live actions to cause Captain Hook here has the right amount of everything to him. I don't think the new version (with Jude Law) will come close…but we will see. Tumblr and Youtube with the trailer here:
youtube
has videos and gifs like this cause it is a fan favourite.
It is what made Captain Hook turn into a sexy bad boy. (Spotify has a playlist with this version as a cover). I mean I feel I agree with this when thinking of this version. This is probably why…
Tumblr media
...who's idea was that?
Granted I was like 5 years old in theatres when I saw this. Why did 5-year-old Emily see this in theatres? Cause she asked her dad and he said yes.
Also, I spy the Eton crest (talked more about in my @music-meme-of-365-days)
Tumblr media
Then he plays the piano (technically it is a harpsichord) for Wendy in this version and also sings. And also this caused so much older Wendy Darling x Captain Hook fanfiction/fan art/etc (looking at @darlinghooklove-blog and bloggers of that group) to appear and I get why so I have a blog called @emily-s-otp for more Captain Hook x Wendy Darling stuff.
Tumblr media
This version has a theme about Wendy growing up/learning about herself and it seems creepy when you think about it, due to him playing her father. This is probably why Jason Isaacs is unsure about it.
Now thinking about it, I know this was part of my sexual awaking as a teen (cause I saw it again as a teenager…and many times after…)
Speaking of Spotify, it only recently readded this version to it…just as Netflix removed it. (Like why? Add it back again)
also this song from the trailer…
I might keep hunting for stuff relating to this...or finding a Tumblr post like this...
This connects into another inktober...guess who?
Also, ratings for this come up this...
IMDb - 6.8/10
Rotten Tomato - 77%
Common Sense - 4/5
I wish they were better.
Also, Jason Isaacs has mixed feelings about it. Someone tell him that "You are born to play Captain Hook." cause it is true and many fans agree.
youtube
Also there is an extra that I need to show you.
youtube
Jason Isaac probably did have fun making this movie....this video proves it.
I think he did a lot part of the documentary for this movie.
Also, this has more than one thing with the person who plays Peter Pan:
Just look up Jeremy for more. (this channel has a lot of him.)
He and Rachel did a Neville Longbottom on us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So there is that article with Jason Isaacs part saying:
Apart from giving no fucks on Twitter, Jason has also appeared in the likes of Harry Potter and Star Trek. You've probably never heard of them.
…Jason Isaacs also does that apparently. I meant the "no fucks on Twitter" part, and not the others.
https://twitter.com/jasonsfolly
Tumblr media
…this is his username. Just look at the bio. No fucks here.
TV tropes are another go-to for me and this movie.

what i think redacted characters look like (sam edition!)
notes: y hello there!! sry i disappeared for a bit until earlier today, the last half of this week has been a bit busy w school. i’m gonna start working on the tank version of the ‘dynasty’ miniseries (i need to come up w a better name) later tn. i’ve also started inktober, so i’ll start posting that too!! — i wanted to make this as a drawing and writing reference if i ever needed it, plus i keep thinking about it and i needed to get it out of my head, so here u go.
{{ happy spoopy season yall, and please enjoy!! }}
~ height ~ i thought sam was pretty average height at first (like 5’11, maybe 6’0) until i saw this tumblr post referencing the “ur bond w a vampire” video, and the op said smth along the lines of, “imagine sam being so tall he has to bend down to walk into darlin’s apartment” and i’ve been a super mega tall sam believer ever since. sam is like david-height, maybe even taller to make it extra funny that he’s intimidated by him. (also i tried looking for the post mentioned, but i couldn’t find it, i’m sry!)
~ hair style ~ i think his hair is mid-length— like to his jaw. i don’t think it’s curly, but i think it’s curled at the ends, if that makes sense? like it’s fluffy, so it curls around his jaw and on the nape of neck. he has it parted in the middle for fancy occasions, but usually it’s just pushed back to keep it out of his face (NOT WITH GEL THO. that is a v important point.) i’m going to admit smth diabolical; i think sam has curtain bangs, but i don’t think it’s intentional. his hair just kind of grew like that, so he just gets it cut like that now. i think it’s also constantly falling to his face, and whenever he tries to push it back, a piece just pops back onto his forehead sneakily. perhaps he wears headbands sometimes. maybe darlin even buys them for him. we’ll nvr know.
~ hair color ~ sam’s hair has to be light brown, no i’m not taking opinions. i think it’s that kind of light brown that it’s ALMOST blonde, but only when it’s in the sun. his hair looks like gold thread under the sunlight me thinks.
~ eye color ~ pre-vampirism, i think sam’s eyes were a dark green/hazel-ish color. his eyes kind of looked like a forest, if that makes sense. now, his eyes r silver, but they hv v little crimson flecks in them. i don’t know if the amount of them has anything to do w how long a vamp’s been turned/how old they r, but i just imagine sam’s don’t hv much. maybe i just think his eyes look more human than most vamps’.
~ face ~ sam’s face is like a square/heart mix, w some light stubble along his jaw. i think his eyes r slightly downturned, and he has thicker brows. (i might draw him eventually, but i am terrified i will not do him justice.)
~ body type ~ i think he’s muscular. not like freaky raw chicken-esque muscles gym bro kind of muscular, but the kind of muscular that are comforting and can protect u. his arms r pretty muscular, and i think he has abs. he’s less muscular than david, tho.
~ clothing ~ white tank top (like a wife beater), unbuttoned flannel, jeans. boom. that’s literally all he wears. he doesn’t wear the exact same clothes every day ofc— but he’s got different colored flannels for every occasion imaginable, as well as an endless supply of jeans and white tank tops. i believe he’s got some pretty nice clothes that previously collected dust in his closet, but now tank steals them. also, i’m gonna say smth all might not agree with.. i don’t think sam wears cowboy boots!!! i’m sry i’m sry!!! hold the tomatoes tho and let me explain. i think he believes they’re impractical. so instead, sam wears sneakers. black converse to be specific; they’re so beat up he can just slip them on without even trying at this point. the little aglets r ripped off of the laces, too.

Help I accidentally acquired a new hyperfixation
What happened:
Somehow with no prompting on my part this show just lodged itself in my brain
I'm not great at drawing people so I couldn't quickly make fanart, so It's been endlessly rotating in my head for a week
While realistic people aren't something I have in my repertoire of skills, that's not the main reason I didn't draw characters- any attempts would take way too long and I have too much other stuff to get done
I've been getting sort of antsy being unable to draw stuff from the show and forgot the lack of face-drawing experience wasn't the main factor holding me back, so I figured I could just draw symbols and objects from the show
I noticed I could probably get away with using the lighter for the Inktober prompt "match" so I started gathering some reference images to make my life easier when I get to that day
Ended up just doing a quick sketch to remind me that was the main thing I saved the images for
Then this happened
Hours later and somehow I have a face that ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE A FACE, a lime green sketch of a lighter, and a ton of work left to cram into a short period of time
Anyway I really like how this turned out :)

10 Years of Sherlock (TV)  AO3 stats!
Sherlock fans, new and old, click below to read a long list of graphs and comments about our communities fanworks over the last 10 years. I scraped AO3 again and demonstrate that:
More creators are writing longer works in 2020
Readers engaged more as the fandom changed after S4
Top ten new tags per year for the last 10 years
And a lot more.
PS the code to gather this data and analyse it can be found way over here.
Activity over 10 years
The last 10 years in the BBC Sherlock fandom have been tumultuous, but this community persists, with engagement from new fans and continued creative output. To commemorate over a decade of squee, I’ve done another scrape of the fandom’s imprint on the Archive of Our Own and will share some insights from the numbers in these plots. A very late update on my post S4 snapshot from 2018.
Note: This analysis is of completed public fanworks only, about 101000 of the 122000 Sherlock (TV) works available at present. This is to remove the late WIP effect, which adds a bulge to the last few months, and out of respect to creators who wish to have their material reserved for other registered AO3 users.
The works are still coming
Counting the number of works posted per day, we can see the peaks associated with each series airing (in UK and US). After that, the number of works continues fairly evenly, 20-30 per day, plus seasonal peaks. This rate is continuing on without a hint of new canon in sight. So who is posting all this work?
Tumblr media
Creator-waves, monthly output
Years ago I started plotting creator waves, basically I group fanwork producers by the year they first posted to the fandom and then count how many of this group are active in later time intervals. This lets us get a sense of how long people are contributing and whether new fans are getting the urge to create.
Tumblr media
This plot of the Sherlock (TV) fanworks on AO3 shows the standard shape of plump participation in the first year of any given set of creators, followed by a slowly thinning tail as they because less active over time. Turnover is natural in fandoms, with most only posting a work or two within a fairly limited amount of time, while a precious few persist for years.  The surprise for me here is that the ratio of new creators is higher in 2020 than it was in 2019. Maybe the excuse of lockdown encouraged more folks to take a turn at creating content.
Tumblr media
Another way to look at the output of fan creators on AO3 is to see the total amount of words being shared across all fanworks. The total has been pretty close to 300-400k words per month since 2018! To get a sense of what that means per work, I also plotted the median number of words per fanwork in these monthly sets. The median in higher in the last year than it had been staying for a while.
Reader behaviour: Hits & Kudos & Comments
Fan creators are only part of the story. Stats on engagement are a bit trick to interpret, I’ve got some plots here that tell us something about how works have been engaged with over time.
Tumblr media
The obvious first to consider is Hits. Above is the total number of Hits given to works published each month. This is the current totals, not a historical snapshot, so we have a very strong bias  towards early works, what we might call the Classics Effect. Works that have been around longer have had the chance to be seen by more people, and in particular those works that become must-read classics in a fandom, extending their exposure through prominence in top ranked works and recommendations.
To cut down on the advantage of the classics, we can also consider median hits per work for each month. As most works get a lot attention when they are first posted and then fade out of sight, the median number of hits reflects instead the ratio of readers to creators, basically how many eyeballs are around to look at the latest work, regardless of status. The median plot shows how the hyper-visibility of the few work available before 2012, and then a more steady curve once the fandom had gotten established on the platform after Series 2. Amazingly, the hit rate for the median work was steady through the big bumps in activity with later series, a 1000 hits for median works between 2013 and 2018, followed by a slow decline. I’d expect the 2020 works to continue gaining for a few months yet, but the median is probably 50-60% of what is was when the show was in production.
Tumblr media
Kudos counts and medians show a similar story to hits, but there is a dip down around 2013 for kudos reflects the frenzy of productivity that saw the fandom grow during the Series 2 hiatus. Readers were getting spoiled! From the airing of Series 3 (2014) until a year following Series 4 (2018), the median work received an even 60ish kudos and 1000 hits, a niche audience that decreased to 50/750 through 2018-2019. The numbers of 2020 suggest a smaller community of readers again, though these numbers may still rise a bit in the next few months before the median works are forgotten.
The statistic that tells a different story is Comments. Looking at the total comments counts, there isn’t a drop after Series 3 (2014). Instead, the fandom compensated for changing numbers with more feedback and discussion attached to works. This is reflected in the median comment rate as well, which shows seasonal variation but doesn’t really drop off until 2020.
Tumblr media
It’s remarkable that without fresh canon we continue to have new creators contributing to the fandom, and while that may be outpacing the readership somewhat, the standard of engagement has been very high. One could say the fandom is chugging along quite nicely!
What about Tags
So, with all that turnover and shifting population, is there a change in the kinds of works being posted? We can look at tags, all tags and freeform tags, to see if there were any meaningful trends.
First up, I did a creator-wave like analysis of works just for tags, to see how tags continue to be used after being introduced. Unlike the creators, tags clearly persist for years. After 2015, it looks like the core tag set has been established, with very few tags persisting in usage per  subsequent year.
Tumblr media
This graph reports numbers over time that are not proportional to the number of works or creators active. Instead, works on AO3 have been getting more and more tags over the years, with the average steadily growing from 5 in 2011 to 15 in 2020, with freeform tags (not characters or ships) from 2 to 8.
To get a sense of fic and tagging culture changes over time, I counted the most popular NEW tags of each year (wave). Note: this analysis is using exact matches, not the networked associations of tag meanings wrangled into AO3 today, so some things that pop up aren’t new concepts but instead newly popular TAGs for whatever they represent.

A little note from looking across all freeform tags, not just the new ones, we see a curious pattern with regards to two actions: First Kiss and Anal Sex. They appear amongst the most common tags as of 2014, neck in neck for two years, than Anal Sex drops off the top ten in 2016. From there out, First Kiss stays in the top 5 from that point on, while anal sex appears at rank 9 from 2017-2019 and is gone again in 2020. This probably says something about the fandom, somehow.
Bravo for making it to the end and thank you for reading!
Questions/comments welcome.

Inktober Day 13 - SUPER GROVER! . "Presenting the further adventures of everybody's favorite hero; the man who is faster than lightning, stronger than steel, smarter than a speeding bullet!" . Here's the one you've all been waiting for! Do yourself a favor and go watch some Super Grover episodes on YouTube and laugh yourself sick. It's amazing. This drawing also serves as another kinda overlap/transition between the Muppets in Costume series and the next set, SESAME STREET MONSTERS. . This is the more "classic" Super Grover attire; his helmet was revised pretty significantly in later years to be a little more flashy and less rumpled, but I definitely prefer some patina on my Super Grover. Finding reference for these older skits was challenging, so again, there are pieces and parts from everywhere and a lot of filling in the blanks. Do you have a favorite Super Grover adventure? So I've decided to try out Inktober.
I'm a bit late so I'll probably upload two or three pics today. The first one I'm a bit unsure about
I've been working on it for a bit as part of a fanfic. It is supposed to be Colonel Klink. I don't know if it needs a tw, but it has some blood.
I'm not sure if it really counts tho. I'm just getting back into actually drawing so my stuff really isn't that great. I took a picture that was only supposed to be a reference pic and ended up editing it instead... I like the way its coming out, I'm still working on it. But it still kinda feels like a cheat honestly.
Anyway. here it is.
Tumblr media
Which I edited from this one
Tumblr media
So yeah.
Theres the first one. For Inktober 1. I'll post another one a bit later.

Inktober 2019 - Bait So much for a stretch?? Creating this piece was a bit of a marathon for me! Normally I can not stand to work on projects in small parts. You know, the key to success?? Haha, I seem to lose interest so quickly in everything I work on I get very anxious about not completing the artwork in one sitting. I don't know why, it feels like my brain compares it to taking a long break from a video game and not knowing how to play when it comes back. Feeling shame and embarrassment, I easily give in and not pick up old work that I struggled with. As a creative, I feel this was the worst decision I can do to myself. But at least past AJ did one thing right, she saved all her crappy doodles and ideas that she tried to work on in 1 sitting. Now that I grow older and learn much more patience with not just my craft but with my health, I find it to be a fun experiment to look through all of my older artwork and try to find pieces I wanted to draw but was clearly not at the skill level I wanted. Being older I know and understand how to break down a lot of these key elements that baby-aj was looking for, I still don't really feel confident that I could draw the image I imagine in my head. But that's not the point!! Just draw the image, done is always better than perfect. And so long as I have arms and cannabis, I will be able to keep drawing to my heart's content. The theme for this prompt was "Bait". My mind had a couple of ideas to juggle, first an old OC from a cage/Colosseum competitive brawling world of poverty and prejudiced. But that seemed too complicated to boil down, certain maybe later after I write about the bait-girl more and try drawing her more often. So I went onward to my second idea, prey animals. Specifically rabbits much like the stories of Watership Down. They have been big influences on the stories I want to tell and enjoy. This is one of my takes on the Watership down world. Mostly thinking of the quote by Richard Adams, "All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed." I feel at this time I captured the feeling of that quote. It's a little bit like how my brain operates. Depression and anxiety have taken a choke hold of my life. It is hard to find your independence and self satisfaction when you're constantly fighting your declining health. But did that stop El-ahrairah and his kin? Instead they thrive, even now in my mind they run freely. I did sneak a tiny reference to my own personal fantasy world, Clo, into the painting as well. In the world of Clo rabbits have one more predator they often fear, those of their own kind... Every once in a while a doe will give birth to a healthy litter of kittens but they quickly realize one of the kits has two hard claws on their hind legs and tiny little nubs on their soft fuzzy heads. It is the first sign of a growing Clawed Jackalope. They can only survive underground for the first month or two of their lives. But once their horns or antlers begin to grow in they can no longer safely venture into the burrows lest they get stuck and potentially die of panic. The rabbits of Clo do openly fear the clawed jackalopes. These rabbits can grow two or three times the size of your average wild rabbit. With razor sharp claws they easily can tear open their opponents with just a kick. Their horns growing from the skulls help harden the bone and allow them to butt heads without much damage to themselves. But what the rabbits fear most of their large brethren is how desperately they crave nutrients for how difficult the growing pains are. The more bone, bone marrow, and minerals they eat, the easier their bodies adjust. Many clawed jackalopes born to warrens who don't know any better will keep the jackalope close to home and accidentally starve it until the poor creature usually snaps and kills it's warren mates, devouring flesh and bone alike. Many warrens have fallen to their own kittens, now it's pretty well known to kill or abandon any clawed jackalopes that are born. Though it can be a hard sacrifice to bare, one for the many. Annnd... enjoy! ; W ;

Inktober is an online art project where you get a drawing prompt every day all October long.
This year I had some specific goals in mind. I wanted to work on character designs with odd body shapes and stances. I  also wanted to work on my Moebius-style hatching using a pen instead of thicker brush pen,  focusing on amount, length, curve, direction, etc, of the lines.
I took a lot of inspiration from old toys and video games, particularly Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toys and Mega Man video games.
Overall I’m really happy with this year. I didn’t figure out everything I wanted to, but I certainly learned a lot just through practice. And the best part is having another personal little catalogues of ideas and techniques I can reference later.
-Love Nick.

Hope you all had a good and safe Halloween! Finally, I found the time to write down all these descriptions:
Day 25: Spirit Buddy During my work shift that day, I spent a good chunk of my time just trying to come up with a good design for a little spirit familiar idea, even going so far as to doodle out ideas on a piece of scrap paper whenever I had a moment. I ended up with a really adorable design that I liked a lot, and I need to draw a full reference pic when I get the chance.
The guy is a witch/shaman/divinator (I’ll research more later) who’s a college student. He inherited a book of spells and magic from his family line, as well as a little wooden pendant that contains a spirit who’s supposed to act as a familiar.
So far what I’ve come up with for the familiar is that they act sort of cat-like, being intelligent and slightly cheeky, but overall chill and helpful. Sometimes he’ll act cute because he knows people find him adorable (and like hell he’s going to turn down the attention). It’s also not unlike him to give a big slap to the face to whoever’s freaking out and needs to snap out of it, or to just yeet an object with his big hand-tail thing.
There is so much potential for shenanigans with this creature and I love it Day 26: Run and Hide Little Rabbit Ok, the story idea I came up for this demon is fairly dark
 Like, it’s kinda messed up.
Spike was born in a rural area full of farms and fields, in a place right next to a forest, and with a human population who was oblivious to magic.
When Spike was just an infant, his mother was killed, being hunted down by the local humans because she looked like a monster, and Spike was left at the edge of a forest. Luckily, he was found by a friendly farmer who raised rabbits, and mistook the demon infant for a strange defective rabbit due to his small size, large ears, and digitigrade legs. For most of his childhood, Spike was raised as if he was just a rabbit, the kind farmer waving off any remarks about his strange appearance. The farmer believed that Spike was just one of those rare instances of a genetic mutation, and cared more about Spike being a sweet little thing. However, as Spike grew, the kind farmer started to find less and less possible explanations for his appearance, at first thinking he was a Flemish giant rabbit, but then wondering if he was an entirely different animal due to his size. It wasn’t until Spike started to babble and imitate human speech that the kind farmer grew terrified. One of the neighbors suggested that Spike be released into the wild, and the kind farmer reluctantly agreed, wary of what Spike actually was.
For a while, the kind farmer would go out into the forest to leave some fresh food and water for Spike, but unfortunately he died a few years later due to a heart attack. It didn’t take long for the other members of the rural town to catch sightings of Spike. Out of their fear, Spike became known as the monster that stalks the town and the forest, and people immediately took up arms in case they ever saw him. Due to him being raised amongst rabbits, and him being chased down by every human who saw him, he became incredibly timid and fearful of everything.
As he grew into an adult, he wanted to stay far far away from the humans, but he had no choice but to sneak into their fields to steal food in order to sustain himself. This lead to the townsfolk becoming even more terrified as time went on, creating their own rumors and superstitions over the lumbering monster that came out to hunt at night. Even going so far as to blame every injury and bad occurrence on the skittish demon. It wasn’t until the village started to organize mobs to hunt down Spike that word began to spread about the monster in the woods. At this point, some of the more magically inclined individuals began to hear about this, and word got to the Magical Beings Protection Society. The MBPS sent out a rescue party to retrieve Spike and wipe the memories of all the townsfolk, and thankfully the mission was a success. However, they found that Spike’s mental state was long gone, a life of delusion and fear taking a severe toll on his psychological health. Spike could speak, but he was very insistent that he was a rabbit, no matter how many discrepancies were pointed out to him. He was admitted to the closest mental institution in a magic-friendly town, Ombra Nera, but no amount of care or treatment could fix him. He was so distressed about people not believing that he was a normal rabbit, on top being trapped inside a hospital, that he escaped on the first chance he got, and made a run for the forest that surrounds Ombra Nera.
To this day, Spike hides in the deepest and darkest parts of the forest surrounding the town, forging for roots and grass, and nervously muttering to himself about always needing to hide. He is doing better in the deep forest now that he is no longer being hunted, but his mind remains broken from years of neglect and abuse. Day 27: Punk Rock Satyr I was initially thinking of just drawing a human, but since I was studying Greek art for my art history class, I decided to go “fuck it, I’ll make her a satyr” I think I might make her friends with that one demon character idea with the huge cage/mouth tail thing Day 28: Floating Little Angel I didn’t have much of a plan or idea for this one, I just wanted to make a long and skinny creature that was very reminiscent of the character designs I liked to make up over 5 years ago
And I guess I decided to make it a sort angel? Idk, I just wanted to play around with the markings to make it look like it has psychic magic Might need to redesign this one to make it more consistent with the rest of my characters Day 29: Big Shoes The first thing that popped into my head was just this little gremlin with giant cartoony shoes It kinda reminds me of Webber from Don’t Starve Days 30-31: Ominous I wanted to end with a bang, so I decided to make one big drawing for the last couple days of Inktober This guy is another Necroform- a very powerful and high ranking Necroform as a matter of fact. Not sure what I’ll have him do in the afterlife realm, but all I know is that he’s probably about 15-20 ft tall Also I got the idea for his wings from those cheap skeleton animal figures that were popping up as Halloween decorations. Whoever makes those things probably doesn’t care about being anatomically correct lol I apologize for taking forever to update this, I've been trying to catch up with homework, and I've been trying to combat burnout

In the TV miniseries Neverland, James Hook is played by Rhys Ifans. He is introduced as "Jimmy", a fencing teacher and leader of a small group of juvenile pickpockets including Peter Pan with whom he has developed a father-son relationship. Jimmy is seeking a mysterious orb, which Peter and his gang have discovered unbeknownst to him. In the course of the miniseries, it is revealed that he actually killed Peter's father because he was in love with Peter's mother, with the watch that Hook owns having once belonged to Peter's father; the watch is lost with Hook's hand in their final confrontation when the crocodile swallows both.

my (personal favourite) writings from 2019
I don’t have anything for January because I guess I didn’t write/didn’t post anything then? At any rate, here are my favourite writings from every month of 2019.
---
February:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/17764769/chapters/41916899 : “To Give Life Meaning”, a 5+1 things Hinanami fic I wrote over the course of several days, mostly at night. The honourific situation with this one is messy and there are the beginnings of a lot of good lines? Like I know what I was trying to say. But it’s not the kind of thing that I would be happy posting nowadays. (Ignore the fact that it says it was completed in September of this year; I went through nine months later and separated the different sections into chapters so that it would be easier to read. I wrote and published all of it back in February.) This was the second Danganronpa fic I ever wrote.
Content warnings: Contains talk of suicide, and mentions of being suicidal. Generally in the past tense. Nobody is proactive in this fic.
---
March:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18232343 : “Hold his hand”, the very first Amasai one-shot I ever wrote. I got the idea for this one late at night thinking about how Shuichi would react if his mom died. I was actually going to write this with Ryoma comforting him, or Kiyo maybe, but I ended up doing Rantaro because I watched all of his FTEs with Shuichi and was like… I do like this green man. Anyway, I’m glad I did, because if I hadn’t I don’t know if the Amasai series would… even exist. That’s really weird to think about.
Content warnings: Minor character death on the part of Shuichi’s mother. The focus of the piece isn’t her dying (as it is in fact from Rantaro’s perspective) so much as it is the conflicting emotions that it stirs up for Shuichi, but it’s still, y’know, someone’s mother dying. Anyway, read with caution.
---
April:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18468478 : “Does it matter?”, a late-night fic where Aoi is conflicted about her sexuality and calls Makoto to talk about it. I wrote a lot of one-shots in April (I actually surprised myself going through them haha) but this one is my favourite because it touches on things that I don’t see addressed a lot. Makoto and Aoi are good friends. 10/10.
Content warnings: Internalised homophobia. It hasn’t triggered anybody that I know of because it’s mostly just Makoto giving advice and Aoi coming to the conclusion that she really likes Sakura in a not-so-platonic way, but y’know.
---
May:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18776947 : “Shuichi thinks too much”, another installment in the Amasai drabbles series, and… wow. I literally only posted Amasai in the month of May. This one is my favourite (of the ones I posted in May, obviously) because it’s the one where Shuichi realises that Rantaro is claustrophobic and then they have a messy first kiss in the wake of Rantaro’s panic attack. I like fics where Character A kisses Character B and B has to be like… slow down partner… ur panicking. I also just like milking Rantaro angst so it’s a win-win. I go back and read this one periodically :)
Content warnings: Panic attacks, claustrophobia. Shuichi is exhausted in this fic haha but at least he has his shit together enough to know exactly what he’s feeling through the whole thing.
---
June:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/19210423 : “Quiet Moments”, an introspective drabble/character study in which Peko thinks about how much she loves Ibuki. Damn, I love Pekobuki. I haven’t written nearly enough for them. I wrote a lot of things in June (including an Undertale one-shot which was a strong contender for this spot just because this list is dominated by Danganronpa stuff) but this one is my favourite because it was just me… rambling about how much I love Ibuki… and projecting onto Peko. Which I do every time I write this pairing, but I didn’t make this list to call myself out, so yeah I’m just going to move on.
Content warnings: Peko briefly mentions that Fuyuhiko had to get an appendectomy within the piece, but it’s nothing intense.
---
July:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/19974424 : “Take his soul with a kiss”, a Grim Reaper AU in which Maki is Death and Kaito is a guy with the audacity to tell her to wait a week before grabbing her soul. I’ve finally hit the part of this summer where I was eating one meal a day and spending the rest of my time on my laptop writing fic. 14k words a day, babey! I wrote all my favourite pieces in July (Shuichi’s love hotel, the one where Rantaro pierces Shuichi’s ears, the domestic Hinanami, the one where Shuichi has a breakdown and everyone comforts him, that one where Shuichi is mean to Kokichi and then apologises) but this one definitely deserves to be here because it’s my favourite. I like Momoharu/Kaimaki/Harukaito (idk what y’all call it man) so, uh. Yeah.
Content warnings: Death is talked about a lot but I don’t want to spoil anything about the ending by saying shit so I’ll just??? It’s a Grim Reaper AU, procede with caution. Oh, and Kaito has a lung disease.
---
August:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20442290/chapters/48499868 : “Causation and Correlation”, another 5+1 things fic (I have a good chunk of them) where Kyoko can hear death and so she goes around saving people. Also, in the end of the fic, someone saves her. It’s a cute fic and I love writing Kyoko so obviously this one is my favourite. (The one where Kokichi has parents and the Kaemugi fic I wrote that month are ones I really like too… this isn’t easy for me gamers ;w;) This is one of those fics where I was feeling extremely confident about my writing abilities the whole time I wrote it, and I’m still really proud of it.
Content warnings: Again, uh, death? Attempted murder, near-drowning, sickness, head injuries, and also attempted suicide. (Nobody dies in this fic, though.) Kyoko has her work cut out for her in this one.
---
September:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20577251 : “Cigarette smoke”, a vaguely nonsensical Saimota piece I wrote where Kaito breaks down and Shuichi comforts him. I’ve only written Saimota twice and both times it’s been Kaito angst because you guys, you just, you don’t address his sadness at all unless it’s in Oumota (and we all know how I feel about Oumota). I should start referring to September as “the month of angst fics I wrote in the middle of the night” because that’s exactly what all of it was. This one wasn’t a vent fic, but there were a lot of them. September is also the month I started doing Amami week, so there’s a lot of that, too.
Content warnings: Kaito really… berates himself in this one. His internal dialogue is hard for me to read in this one because he’s super hard on himself. He also has a meltdown and starts hyperventilating at one point (and the way I write breakdowns is always super descriptive) so please make sure you’re happy and healthy before reading.
---
October:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21195527 : “In the forever sense of the term”, what is probably my favourite Amasai fic at this moment, where Shuichi and Rantaro are forced to address Shuichi’s abandonment issues, and also there’s crying. A lot of it. From Shuichi mainly but a little bit from Rantaro too. I was surprised at how many fics I wrote in October because I was mostly focusing on Inktober I should think? I wrote a lot of original works in Inktober (though I ended up falling off the wagon at the end due to burnout) and it was a really fun experience! I think it strengthened my skills as a writer. Anyway this one is cathartic as hell.
Content warnings: The self loathing is strong with this one. It’s one of many mental breakdown fics that I’ve written this year. And there’s obviously the abandonment issues thing. Yikes.
---
November:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21399748 : “One hundred and twenty six tiles on the ceiling”, where Himiko ends up bailing on plans she made with everyone to hang out and instead stays at home, stewing in self deprecation, until Ryoma shows up, and then everyone else comes to take care of her. Another one of those ones where everyone is there for someone after a breakdown. I like this one because Himiko is my baby and most of the angst the fandom puts out for her is centered around Tenko and Angie, which sucks because I headcanon her as having depression. Like, depression that is entirely unrelated to the people she knows kind of depression. I didn’t write a lot in November because I had a relapse, but I like this one anyway.
Content warnings: Depressive episode, disassociating, suicidal ideation, all the ugly things that come with depression. This isn’t a pretty fic. I don’t write depression as something that’s pretty or poetic because it’s not. It fucking sucks and that’s just how things are going to be.
---
December:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21976864/chapters/52442179 : “An Ode to Yellow Carnations”, a 5+1 things fic where Tsumugi is a florist and Kaede takes different people to her shop until eventually she goes by herself. Is anyone surprised to see this one here? I wrote it for Tumblr’s Danganronpa Secret Santa Gift Exchange 2019 and went waaaay overboard with it. Which is probably why I like it so much. It took me ten days to actually complete, and I’ll frame it like I was diligently writing the whole time, but anyone who knows me knows that I never do things in that way. In truth I switched ideas for the fic four different times and then wrote half of it all in one night when I was hit with a surge of inspiration. I was really nervous that the person I wrote it for would hate it since it’s so long, lol. (Hi Alerane, I love you.) Anyway, I’m gonna think of December of this year as the month where I spent a really long time on a bunch of fics and then posted them all at once.
Content warnings: Very minor character death, mentions of alcohol use (nothing egregious, just recreational use on an outing with friends and all the characters are of age), also Kaede doesn’t go outside in this fic.
---
I’m going to try and get out one more fic before the year ends. To be honest I wasn’t expecting to have updated Search by now so I’ve been kind of sitting around wondering what I should write. Maybe I should just start on the Aki chapter, but I’m kind of putting that off because writing those chapters takes a lot of energy and Aki’s is probably going to double Tsubaki’s in length. (Which is great, since Tsubaki’s was already a monster of a chapter on its own.) I’ve had a really great year for writing, y’all. I’ve made lots of friends and learned a whole lot about myself, and my writing style, and the characters I’m trying to portray.
I didn’t include any long-term multi-chapters in this list, like The Best Lies or my Fanganronpa (rip… I swear I’ll pick it back up again soon, I love those characters) but if you want to track my progress as a writer without reading eleven different fics, I’d really recommend reading one of those, because you can see it happening as the chapters go on. There’s so much that I’d probably write differently from where I am now as a writer, because that’s just how things work. Life is like that. You do things a certain way in the moment, and then later, you wish you could’ve done them differently. It’s impossible to live your life without regrets, or things that you’d like to do over again.
But for what it’s worth, I’m really happy that I don’t have to. Thank you guys so much for sticking with me this year. It hasn’t been the best, but it’s been all that it’s been capable of being.
Here’s to a new decade.

Inktober/Spirktober (part 3)
What do you mean, it’s February already ? Doesn’t matter ! I still have a lot of theme to go through, and I indend to ! You guys can take this as a gift for Valentine’s day ! (what-? Valentine’s day’s over too ? Oh, man.) The drawings are taking me more and more time to complete, as I’m trying to get better at backgrounds. Also, I’m having fun experimenting with new supplies ! (what is money anyway)
Hope you’ll like it ! Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone ! <3
(Also, I’m considering posting the drawings one by one, instead of doing a master post every 5-6 drawings. What do you think ?)
[Part 1 and Part 2 here !]
Tumblr media
Day 14 : Soulmate AU - Or the AU that wasn’t actually an AU because they are soulmates, it’s canon, thank you for coming to my TedTalk. Spock unlocks Spock!Prime’s memories stuck inside Jim’s head through a mind meld, and both of them realise they’re actually each other’s T’hy’la
I think this is my favourite drawing of Spirktober. I’ve always loved the concept of T’hy’la, of a universal constant that it’s Jim and Spock’s destiny to meet in any reality. Same thing for the idea of Spock!Prime accidentally giving some memories of his relationship with his captain to Jim, like “Woops, sorry bro, you weren’t supposed to see that, lol” Also, mind meld ? Yeah, man, awesome stuff. It was also fun drawing scenes seen in the movies, love it !
I also want to credit @t8oo and @djiange as I used some of their marvelous drawings as references (because I don’t know how to draw people kissing and... hands ?? Wtf are hands, anyway ???). If you like Spirk, I advise you to go check their art, it’s beautiful.
Tumblr media
Day 15 : Furry AU - Captain Puppy!Kirk and his First Officer Cat!Spock go through purrfect adventures (okay, that was terrible).
I was really anxious about this theme as I’m not really into furries, and i’m usually terrible at drawing animals. But while searching for some references, I stumbled onto some Zootopia fanarts, and realized a drawing mimicking Disney’s animal style could work ! Overall, it was pretty fun to do, even if that’s not the drawing I love most. I also didn’t really know what to do with the background, but I decided to keep it for maybe later, just as the first drawings I did for Inktober.
Tumblr media
Day 16 : RPG/Fantasy AU - Princes Spock and Kirk decide to team up to beat up the dangerous creature terrorizing the fantasy world.
I spent weeks on this drawing, because I actually didn’t know what to do ! I did a bunch of sketches, but I was never really satisfied. I also wanted to do a more elaborate background, maybe showing the inside of a cave, but I didn’t feel like doing it. But this is also were Clip Studio came into play ! I downloaded it some time ago, and it’s absolutely amazing, especially thanks to the 3D models, that can help create references. It’s a blessing for me as I usually rely on pictures and fanarts found on the Internet. I also brought back the outfits from the Fairy Tales AU, because I really like them, and they fit in this theme too ! All in all, a difficult drawing that came up to be pretty fun when I knew what I was doing (so... rarely).
Tumblr media
Day 17 : Mirrorverse - Everyone fears James T. Kirk, captain of the ISS Enterprise, and his First Officer Spock, who seems to hate his captain as much as he loves him.
You guys, I looooove the Mirror Universe. Especially the kind of love/hate relationship between Kirk and Spock. I had a bunch of ideas for this drawing, but I preferred to keep this first idea : the menacing captain who seems to be in charge, but is in fact hidding a much greater threat, who could make him the most powerful man on Terra by killing all of his enemies, as much as just snapping his neck at the first sign of betrayal (what do you mean, it’s not what happened in TOS ?). I love this drawing. I think the red pen as well as the blue and gold glitters were perfect for this.
Also, the uniforms were mainly inspired by @leifor‘s art for her fanfic trilogy “Mirror, Wall, Door” which I absolutely adore. Go check it out, it’s awesome.
Tumblr media
Day 18 :  Heroes/Villains AU - Jim, San Fransisco’s most popular hero, keeps tracking Spock, a Vulcan villain and his rival, to make him turn and get him to the good side.
Honestly, what is a background ? I really liked the concept of this drawing, and I like the foreground, but getting started on the background was so hard, because I wasn’t sure of what I was doing. I’m bad at this. However, designing heroes/villains outfits for Kirk and Spock was really fun. And yet again, I can’t resist putting glitters all over the place. Anyone that looked at my drawing was very surprised because “Kirk’s got a BELLY” “Of course, he does ! It’s Kirk ! He’s chubby”. I love his tum. But for some reason, Spock seems smaller on the photograph than on my drawing, and the colors of the background are really weird ? I should learn to take a correct photograph for my traditional drawings.
Next theme will be Cowboys/Spaceboys ! I already have an idea of what I’m gonna do, and I bet it’s gonna be fun !
Hope you guys have a great day/afternoon/evening !

fictober - day thirty-one
Prompt #31: “Scared, me?”
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe (Spider-Man/Tom Holland Films, Captain America)
Characters: Peter Parker & Steve Rogers, Michelle Jones (mention)
Words: 2917
Author’s Note: i have been patiently waiting for an opportunity to pair these two all month, and today i happened to see a still from ffh that showed art supplies in peter’s room and just. bam. practically 3k. having also done inktober this month, this serves neatly to combine the two. oh—and this occurs about 4-5 months post endgame.
>>Brooklyn & Queens (don’t throw shade, draw it)
Signing up for Ms. Hart’s Drawing I class is the most singularly idiotic thing Peter’s ever done, and considering he accidentally hitched a ride into space four months ago, that’s saying a lot.
It all started when he found Ben’s old film camera in the storage boxes they’d gotten post-Blip. He’d showed it to MJ—it’s artsy and it’s old, so she was sure to know what to do with it—and she’d looked at him with her usual level of curiosity disguised as ambivalence.
“You know Midtown’s offering a Darkroom Photography class next Fall, right?”
Peter didn’t know that, but once he did it was all he could think about.
He brings it up to his guidance counselor, and while she’s surprised by his interest, she tells him he can fit it into his schedule—but only if he takes the spring semester drawing class to meet the prerequisites.
It’s that fateful decision that leads to him sitting in Yellowstone Park for two hours straight, trying and failing to translate the still life from this morning’s class onto the paper in front of him.
He holds his pencil at arm’s length and tilts it to the side, one eye closed. He’s not entirely sure how that’s supposed to help, but it’s what all the artists in the movies do, so he figures it’s worth a shot.
The image looks just as small and useless as it did before.
(Although to be fair, that might be because it’s a photograph on a 4.7 inch phone screen, and not an actual, full-sized object.)
Peter wishes MJ were here—he’d initially picked the park because MJ said she’d help him figure out lighting, but she’d gotten caught up in some kind of decathlon prep right as they were leaving school. He hasn’t heard a word from her since, so he’s honestly given up on the idea of her coming at this point.
Peter groans and flops back onto the grass, notebook falling onto his chest and arm across his eyes.
“I should have stayed Blipped.”
He’s fully intending on lying there until nature takes over and he’s turned into ant food, when he’s interrupted by an elderly gentleman’s voice.
“You all right there, son?”
“Only questioning my own mortality for want of a stable light source—” Peter halts mid sentence, realizing the voice sounded weirdly familiar.
Peter lowers his arm from his face and finds himself staring into the eyes of none other than Captain Steven G. Rogers himself.
“Holy shi—” Peter nearly punches a hole in the ground with the amount of force he exerts in leaping to his feet. “—shingles. Holy shingles. Sir.”
He only just remembered that one story Mr. Stark used to tell about the language thing, but Captain Rogers just seems amused by his slip up.
“Sorry if I scared you there, Queens.”
There’s a twinkle in his eye that makes Peter wonder if he didn’t do it on purpose, but he feels the need to defend himself either way. “Scared? Me? No no no no, I was just… cold.”
It’s seventy-five degrees in the shade, and Peter’s been sitting directly in the sun since he got here.
He shoves his notebook behind him with his foot and brushes non-existent grass off his jeans. “Um, anyway, what’re you—what’re you doing out here? I mean, not that you need a reason, since it’s a public park and you’re part of the public I guess, I mean you’re like half of the reason the public is even still here, so, uh—”
Cap looks like he’s trying not to laugh, and Peter wishes the ground would swallow him whole if only to get him to stop talking. “—what I mean is that I uh, I didn’t realize you were still hanging around in New York, Captain Rogers. America. Sir.”
He’s not entirely sure what the ex-super soldier’s official designation is these days, but Cap just starts to sit down on the grass, gesturing for Peter to do the same.
“Just Steve is fine,” he says, legs folded cross-legged under him. “Pretty sure Sam’ll kill us both if he hears you referring to anyone but him as Captain America now. He’s pretty taken with the new title.”
“Oh. Yeah.” Peter crosses his own legs and twiddles his thumbs. The politics of legacy heroes must be wild. He makes a note to never let anyone go by Spider-Man except himself.
“So can I… help you?”
Even as Peter asks, he can feel his throat seizing up at the thought. Before Thanos, he’d have given anything to team up with Captain America, but now…
Now, his heart’s accelerating from than just hero worship.
“No, no. Nothing like that.” Steve’s looking at him closely, eyes strangely sharp for the hundred plus year old body they’re staring out of. “Actually, Tony asked me to keep an eye on you.”
Peter looks up in surprise. “Mr. Stark said that?”
“The words he used were a bit stronger, but yes,” Steve says. “Not that he needed to. Even if you’re from a trashy borough like Queens, you’re still a New York boy.”
Peter gasps in horror, tensions forgotten. “You’re literally from Brooklyn! That’s like, infinitely worse!”
“Not according to ExtraSpace.com, which ranks it as the best borough for housing.”
“Whoever taught you how to use the internet should be criminalized, sir.”
“Steve,” he repeats.
“Right. Steve.” The name still feels weighty on Peter’s tongue. “…If I’m Queens, can we make it even and I call you Brooklyn?”
Cap laughs, and Peter barely has time to think oh my god Captain America laughed at one of my jokes before he realizes the man’s nodding towards Peter’s sketchpad. “Tell you what, you can call me Brooklyn so long as you tell me what’s got you longing for death this evening.”
“Uh…” Peter flounders, trying to find a cooler way to say homework. “Just some bottles.”
Not cooler, Peter. Very, very not cooler.
Steve raises his eyebrows.
“By which I mean drawing bottles! Glass, still-life bottles. Totally kosher ones. Not like, alcohol ones.” Peter scrambles for his notebook. “I’m not legal yet.”
To his surprise, though, Steve holds out an open hand. “May I see?”
Peter turns red enough that if he looked in the mirror, he’d probably think he had his costume on. “…Sure?”
Steve takes the notebook from him and starts paging through it, lingering every so often to trace over his lines. Peter watches the other man’s gnarled hand to avoid thinking about the fact that Captain America was looking at his high school level, B graded sketchpad.
What even is his life.
The only benefit from Steve looking at his drawings is that it meant the other man’s eyes weren’t directly on him, and that lends Peter the courage to ask the question that’s been in the back of his mind ever since he first saw Steve’s white hair.
“…Did you really go back?”
Steve’s hand stills over a poorly done rendition of an onion skin. “By go back, I assume you mean ‘stay.’”
Peter’s not sure he hasn’t just walked into a dangerous topic, but he’s never been good at knowing when to stop. “Yeah.”
Steve nods in a way that makes Peter think he’s probably a lot like that, too. “Then yes.”
A young couple walk by a few yards away, but pay them no mind—Peter’s not in his costume, and the general public doesn’t know what happened to Steve. They could easily pass as just an average grandfather and grandson, enjoying a day in the park. Peter’s eyes follow them until he’s sure they’re out of earshot, anyway, then he turns his attention back to Steve.
“So that makes you like…” Peter pauses, quickly running the numbers in his head. “…A hundred and ten? A hundred and eighty if you count the ice?”
The corner of Steve’s mouth twitches up. “Something like that.”
There’s a glint in Steve’s eyes that makes Peter think he might have wildly missed the mark; he stows that tidbit away for later. “Huh. Wow.”
Steve turns another page. “Does your professor know you’re drawing from photographs?”
“Uh, yeah, I guess?” Peter frowns, wondering how Steve could tell. “Does it matter?”
Steve hums, his brow furrowed in thought. “Camera lens aren’t the same as an eye—flattens the shapes differently. It can throw off the lighting, too.”
Peter tilts his head, then looks at his phone, still lying abandoned on the ground. “Oh.”
“Don’t worry.” Steve turns the page. “It’s a disadvantage when drawing, but it’s also the main advantage of actual photography. You can distort the world to fit the message you’re trying to tell.”
“Isn’t that lying?”
“All of art is a lie if you think it’s a direct interpretation of reality, Peter. The truth of art isn’t in always in what it depicts. It’s in how it depicts.”
Even though they’re his own drawings, Peter cranes his neck over Steve’s shoulder to look at his sketchbook. To him, they just look like the average still life.
He wonders what Steve sees.
“How’d you know so much about art?”
“I was planning on being an art major, before the war,” Steve says. “And then I became one in 1957.”
Peter starts, eyes widening as Steve turns the page and finally reaches the sketches he’d been working on that afternoon. “You…”
He trails off, unsure of how to pursue that without offending the older super. Steve, for his part, says nothing further and just flips back and forth between Peter’s second and fourth failed attempt at the three-bottle composition.
Peter clears his throat. “When you—when you decided to go back. Was it hard?”
“Dr. Mortyn’s decision to grade on the curve was infuriating.”
Peter scowls; frustrated at what he can only assume is Steve being deliberately obtuse. “No, I mean—not being able to… change things.”
If Peter’s honest with himself, he’s both a little confused by and a little jealous of Steve’s decision. Confused, because he can’t imagine walking away from the fight when there’s still so much work to be done, can’t imagine going backwards in time when all he ever wants to do is move forward. But also jealous, because…
Because Peter’s tired, and he’s only been doing this for two years—if he’s tired now, then he can’t imagine how he’ll feel once he’s been doing this for as long as Cap did (if he makes it that long). Because Peter’s watched superheroes fight and die and sacrifice everything, and the memorials he passes in the street make him feel so small and insignificant that when he goes out on patrol, it makes him wonder if anything he’s doing really matters. Because he feels like he’s doing nothing right now but he’s terrified he’s going to be called on to do everything one day, and he’s just not sure he’s enough.
Steve finally reaches the last sketch in the notebook—the one Peter’d been working on before he’d given up on the whole thing. Steve looks at the forms for a long moment, then flips to the back of the book and carefully tears out a blank page.
“Where’s your pencil, Queens?”
“My—” Peter’s not entirely sure Steve isn’t just changing the subject on him, but he scrambles for the writing utensil regardless. He finds it and two more laying a few feet away, and gently blows an ant off the tip of the black one before offering it to Steve.
Steve accepts it, and starts sketching an outline of the composition.
“Your grasp of form is good,” he says, shapes quickly coming to life under his deft fingers. “Your proportions are mostly correct; there’s not too much difficulty on perspective. The composition is already set for you, so that’s no issue.”
He finishes the draft, still unshaded, and hands the sketchpad back to Peter. “So why do you keep redoing the same drawing?”
Peter looks between the sketched lines in Cap’s drawing and his own iterations. “Because they’re not the same?”
“The outlines are. Does the rest matter?”
“Well, yeah. Once you add in the shading…”
Peter flips through all the sketches he’d made today—one, two, five, seven; hundreds of eraser marks on all of them. They’re all wrong, but they’re all wrong just a little differently. One has light sources that seem to defy all the laws of physics, jumping in every which direction. Another has marks that were supposed to be highlights, but wound up being darker than the actual shadows. Still another has values that are so close together the shadows make the image look flatter than even Steve’s quick sketch.
He looks up at Steve. “It makes the final thing totally different.”
Steve smiles in response, and starts filling in his own sketch.
“Local colour is your biggest problem,” he says. “You’re trying to match everything to the colour your eye thinks it’s seeing in the photo—like in this one, where your darkest shadow on the white bottle is still brighter than the lightest highlight on the black bottle.”
“And that’s bad?” Peter frowns, catching his lip between his teeth, and starts his eighth version of the image while Cap continues.
“Not necessarily.” Steve runs the pencil over the edge of one of the bottles, darkening its side. “Shading is always a tricky thing. There’s a lot of things to pay attention to—shadows, highlights, halftones. Local colour. One of the most important rules is making sure your lightest dark is still darker than the darkest light.”
“Is that last one supposed to be a metaphor?”
“It wasn’t intended, but you can certainly take it that way.”
Peter hums in response, and moves on to outlining the second bottle. “So in my drawing, do I just ignore the colour?”
“The original context always matters,” Steve replies. He pauses to point out a discrepancy in one of Peter’s lines before continuing. “Your white bottle is always going to be whiter than the black one overall. But if you’ve got a highlight on both—that highlight’s the same. And if you’ve got a dark shadow on something, don’t be afraid to make it as dark as it needs to be to provide contrast.”
Peter nods, and after a few minutes, finishes his outline and starts shading. Steve offers pointers every so often, and he’s barely a quarter of the way through the first bottle before he can see a marked difference between this sketch and his last one.
“So,” Peter says eventually. “When I asked how you handled not being able to change things…”
Steve pauses, his pencil hovering above the page, and waits for Peter to finish.
Peter looks down at his drawing and thinks about how it’s exactly the same as all the others, and yet totally different, too.
“…The answer is that you did.”
Steve smiles, the edges of his eyes crinkling, and turns his attention back to his sketch. It’s all the confirmation Peter needs.
The scritch-scratch of pencil on paper fills Peter’s ears as he thinks about that revelation. Whatever Steve did, it can’t have been major—not in the universe-shaping, blatantly obvious kind of way he’s used to Avengers working. He wonders if it was enough.
Peter erases a shadow on the middle bottle he’s decided has gotten too dark, and then glances at Steve, who’s started adding all kinds of textures and details to his own drawing.
It’s clearly the same picture, but the art is something else entirely.
It’s enough.
Peter’s certain Steve has better things to do, but the retired soldier stays with him for another hour, either telling him stories about the Avengers or old school New York, or gently correcting something about his art form. By the time Peter’s done, the sketch isn’t great, per se, but it’s at least good. Steve helps Peter pack his things back up, and then hoists Peter to his feet with a strength that belies his older body.
Steve then hands Peter the drawing he’d made, and Peter almost refuses until he flips it over and sees that Steve’s written a phone number on the back.
“Let me know if you ever need anything, Queens. Including, but not limited to, more art lessons.”
Peter grins from ear to ear. “Thanks, Brooklyn. You too.”
The next morning, Peter turns in a drawing that still looks a little wonky, but it’s so dramatically improved from last time that MJ gives him a halfway impressed thumbs up, and it’s enough to make him take back every disparaging thing he’s said about the class.
That evening, Spider-Man heads out onto the streets with more excitement than he’s had in a long time.
He doesn’t do anything of a particularly groundbreaking nature—nothing that will change the outlines. There’re no aliens, no world-ending weapons, no last minute, jaw dropping rescues.
But there is Mr. Delmar, who needs help repainting the store sign that’s too high for him to reach. There’s a sixth grader, who’s putting up posters for her lost dog until he finds it eleven blocks away. There’s a would-be mugger, who’s had one too many bad days but Spider-Man listens to them all, and then helps him register at a homeless shelter.
It’s nothing so grand as saving the universe. It won’t get him shrines in the streets, or murals on skyscrapers, or even a mention in the paper.
But it’s something: a few more highlights, a little more definition, a bit more right in a world where there’s so much wrong.
And that, Peter decides, is not nothing.

Heyo, Happy Halloween everybody! It’s been a while hasn’t it? I’ll discuss that a bit more later, but for now I want to announce what I’ll be up to in the next month. That’s right, I’m doing Huevember again this year! But this time, I’ll be doing something a little different.
For each day I will be drawing one of my characters (all OCs this time) using the colours in their original order, but using that colour’s compliment (i.e. the colour directly across from it on the colour wheel) as the background. I call it: Huevember Contrast!
As far as rules go, I am allowed to use any tints or shades of the two colours as I see fit, but the challenge will come from how well I can integrate each one and maintain balance between them. Black and white are fair game as neutral tones but cannot be more prominent than the colours. I will likely only use them for line art and eye whites/shines respectively to match the style I’m going for. You’ll see what I mean starting tomorrow!
I’ve already chosen my roster of characters for this challenge, but I’ll let that part be a surprise. c: I did try to match them with colours that might work based on their original designs, but some of them have some pretty off-brand colour schemes, so it should be a fun time! I’m also letting myself be more experimental with these this time around, especially if some of the characters don’t have completely solid designs or attire yet. I won’t be using a lot of references for what is “on model” and will draw whatever looks good in the moment. I’m excited to see what I’ll come up with!
Are any of you doing Huevember this year? If you are and want to give this version a try, go for it! :D I know a lot of people are hopping off the Inktober train just now, but I think a colour-centric challenge is just what I need to get back in the game. I’ve been in a creative slump for months but I’m hoping this will rejuvenate some of the faith I have in my art skills, or at the very least be a decent distraction for a while. Either way, I hope you enjoy! Like last time, I will be compiling all of the illustrations into this file at the end for a final reveal. And it all starts tomorrow, so see you then! :D <3

Inktober 2019 Soundoff!
Earlier this year I decided to revisit art. Drawing was such a large and important part of my youth and teenage years then it just... wasn't. I had heard of inktober in the past, but this was the first year I participated. It wasn't easy - my brother came in from out of town and it was the first time I saw him in a year, my hubs and I went on vacation, I was working on a DTIYS challenge, I started a diet and exercise regimen... There was a lot going on!! On top of that I was struggling with ulnar tunnel syndrome in my dominant hand which caused me a great deal of pain.
For my inktober project I wanted to create a connected story that you can read and see, with plot progression. However, instead of planning it all in advance (like a sane person), I did it one or two days at a time (until the very end so I knew it could be resolved). Yes, the story has some flaws, but it really tested my creativity and ability to connect seemingly disparate thoughts.
My pieces are a lot simpler than most of the others I've seen because I wanted to participate daily while keeping up a good life balance and allowing my hand to heal. However, the amount of thought that went into them was never rushed. I also limited my paper to 3" x 3" squares, both so I could compile them into one piece later and so I wouldn't kill my hand (or my sanity).
Overall, I had a lot of fun with this project, whether it was experimenting with different brushes and perspectives, or including a JJBA reference just because I could! I also noticed a lot of improvement in myself, both artistically and in the way I approach ideas. So long inktober, see you next year!

when AmiThere, I’m all caught up, except not because I have to do today’s after grocery shopping and laundry, if that even gets done.
Inktober Day 21, Konnie: I started the one on the left with the goal of just slapping something out, no reference image or anything. Thought it was okay, not great, but okay. Looks a smidge better as a sketch. Then I decided I ought to try to find some sort of reference image. It’s hard because Konnie’s genetics, as written, are horribly mixed, but then I wound up finding this image:
Tumblr media
Half-Japanese idol Rola. I know her hair is dyed here, but colouration-wise this is very similar to how I picture Konnie for the most part (although it makes me want to play around with giving her slightly darker hair, as in veering into the light brown/dark blonde territory) So I doodled this general pose as well. I couldn’t figure out how tf to draw her usual side braid (note: I can’t remember shit, the braid was way shorter than I remembered) I just drew her hair down and...wow, that’s not a look I expected at all.
I was thinking for a bit that it was a bit weird that the group’s fightingest, most tomboyish character had this long hair (I think I had a line in there about her parents not wanting her to cut it short, but see above about my memory), which would obviously be a huge issue in any real fight (free rope for your opponent!), and wondered why she didn’t have shorter hair, like even shoulder-length or something. Then I sort of realized that, hello, I have uber-short hair, it’s a lot of work. I have to go get it cut every 4-6 weeks, usually veering closer to the 4-week mark. I can’t see Konnie wanting to do that kind of upkeep, even on a “longer” style that might require less trimming. Just not her thing.
It is kind of funny how far she’s come. @erinhime83 pointed out, she was pretty sedate in the earliest version, as all my characters start out as because I’m a fucking doormat, got a little more feisty (as much as I hate that word, I can’t think of anything else) in later versions, despite the whole “she’s an alien but basically also in a third world country, time to marry at 15 because even aliens have sexism ok”...thing. The fighting went down in this version, but she’s fighting a metaphorical battle against the ~Old Country~ I guess. Except I haven’t quite figure out why the technologically-advanced civilization still has the same old sexism and patriarchy as our world except I kind of also have, but whatever, she’s fighting a battle against her parents and her brother who sort of expect her to be something she’s not, because that’s what Women Do, and in their mind, the less she stands out, the safer she will be. Except, you know, not. Ask Konnie how that worked out. Just don’t mention she broke her leg (at the end of the second version) doing something stupid, because then they won’t listen, even if the rest of it is true.
Inktober Day 22, Dev: He turned out hot here, which is good. 3/4 view is clearly my strong suit, as you can tell by the infinite amount of time I drew it and also why challenge yourself when you can make things look insta-good just by doing this one weird trick??? I think @erinhime83 suggested she didn’t see him as hot, which is super weird, because I clearly can. Wavy hair obviously makes someone 1000x hotter, and her has wavy hair in spades. Sure, I drew it nicely, probably in reality it would veer more towards the “curly, frizzy” side of the spectrum rather than the genteel Grecian-style waves I drew here, but shush, let me have my fantasy. Hot nerds are clearly A Thing, and I have decided Dev is one.
Even though...well, I don’t know too much about him? Sure, he’s Kai’s brother and he loves her and wants to protect her, but either it’s been a while or he didn’t do anything super major. I feel like I can’t re,ember much about him. Kai’s got an emotional connection to him, but she also has an emotional connection to Talia, and because Talia and Dev are cute together, that’s mostly where I get my enjoyment from. It’s hard to describe. I mean I don;t dislike his character, I just find it hard to think of him too much because a lot of the big moments are either Kai and Dylan, or Kai in a group. Like I said I haven’t reread Earthia in ages though.
Inktober Day 23, Keiko: I had an image in my head, this was not it, but this is what we got. Just sort of playing around with Keiko’s hair here, giving her more of a Hotaru kind of look. Then I thought “well, that’s not fair to keep randomly tinkering with designs, just draw her straight,” so I drew her old hairstyle (Keiko Kitagawa as a ref, because I always sort of pictured her?) I realized that I didn’t hate the old hairstyles as much as I thought, I just hate the shitty reference image that hasn’t aged well. Everyone has too-large eyes and full lips, even though they don’t all need full lips. So the layered style doesn’t actually look too bad at all, not that you can tell when I’ve blocked it in like this. Sweater-wise, because it’s -10 here this morning and clearly Sweater Weather, the first one was sort of lifted from a big squishy-looking one my supervisor has and that I secretly sort of envy. The one with her usual hairstyle is one I have, sort of a dove-grey with white/cream lace running down the sides there. And the necklace...ehh, seems like almost all of the other girls have them so she gets one even though she doesn’t need it.
Story-wise I’ve never found much to do with Keiko though. She was always just sort of there, bouncing around from position to position. It makes just as much sense to make her one of the girls, but I could easily make her straight-up alien (although even there, it’d be minor) or just axe her completely, like Carmen. Which makes me sad, because I changed very little about the main characters for years now, and considering she’s been here since the beginning it would feel weird to write a story without her, but I just might. (Like I know the goal is just to vomit words all of November and probably delete it all when I’m done, but I’m also still thinking of a rewrite, even if I know I won’t be able to prepare anything at this point, not between Inktober and my other stuff. So in my head I’m trying to conceive of a story without them there (it’d be a bit more manageable than writing, and since Keiko’s main “interest” or “role” semi-overlaps with Shelby, wouldn’t lose too much if cut), and I have a feeling they might not show up as much, because in my head I’m already trying to think of them as not there.
Which is a shame. The designs are cute. Maybe Carmen and Keiko need a story to themselves or something. :P
Inktober Day 24, Gaius: He turned out stupid here but that’s entirely my own fault for using a bizarre ref image. Not bad otherwise though. Gaius is one of those characters, like Dev, that I don’t think much of because his real push is his connection to Aerona, whom Kai and the reader both have a connection with. I mean I like him well enough but he doesn’t stand out as a major character or anything. I kind of liked when he was a Federation officer, even though I can see why he’s a rebel in this version. The structure of being an officer and having a lot of stuff take place on a Federation ship gave Gaius more of a chance to shine, I think. I don’t know if that makes sense. The design looks good though, even if I think I messed up the collar (not wide enough??)
Inktober Day 25, Dr. Thanatos: Man, Thanatos has been around from, if not the beginning (although...maybe? In a different form?) then pretty close. His basic design and colouration hasn’t changed terribly much either, a symptom of how I don’t bother changing things unless I’m really dissatisfied. Sure he started out as something of a ghost or spirit, because my works are defined by nothing if not an oddly spiritual side and a supernatural presence, but that sort of got axed when I decided he wasn’t going to be the spirit of some long-dead guy or the personification of Death in the CS ‘verse, but instead a normal guy with an incongruously Greek nickname. (Then again, so does Serena, and Theophanes, etc. Considering the rest of Veive is very much Etruscan-based the name ‘Thanatos’ and ‘Serena’ stick out like sore thumbs. Maybe I should change it, or at the very least suggest that his nickname literally isn’t “Thanatos”, but a name the mental translator is supplying based off the listener’s pre-existing knowledge--like the actual name is sort of the name for an old death god in their culture, due to whatever reason. however people gets nicknames, that the translator used “Thanatos” as a translation, even if it’s not literal/.
I like his design. I accidentally doodled him once with a side part and liked it way too much. Also he has stupid future glasses in an earlier design that got scrapped that I brought back for the lulz. I think they took good on him, and considering their advancement (he’s said to have eye implants to help him see, because otherwise he would need glasses), I would imagine choosing glasses would be more of a personal/stylistic choice rather than a need. The sweater...well, I’ve drawn him in a couple, but I couldn’t remember the neckline for the one, except that it was something like this except not. Trust me, he looks hot here, but he’s also a scientist; things like “clean clothes” and “coordinated outfits” are really beyond him most days. Probably why he wears black and white, and whatever the Veive equivalent of jeans is, like...daily. So imagine that sweater has been sitting on the back of a chair for a week or two, and is probably wrinkled, he will look less hot, I assure you.
Also he’s got some sort of sketchy past based off of the fact that in previous versions, his character had a sketchy, pretty abusive (with him being in the position of less power and receiving the abuse) relationship with Amina, and that’s sort of persisted here. Except not, because Amina’s dead in the Prime timeline, but there was something sketchy with his experiments that made people a bit uneasy, but not enough to actually cut him off from funding (the second his funding went there’d be no more story, because someone’s got to pay for all this science, and he sure as shit can’t do that with an instructor’s salary.)
I think I had him planned to be the main villain of the first book. Oh, not a straight-up villain; I rarely write those. No, he was supposed to be a villain in the sense that he was blocking the Gang from their goals, or withholding information or something. He was a villain in the sense that he opposed the group, not out of hatred but out of an overbearing desire to keep them safe (he’s not cruel, he’s not mean, even if people allege such; he can tell they’re just kids, really, and he doesn’t want them to get hurt, especially since they are in a world completely unfamiliar and perhaps almost hostile to them, so of course he has to do all of these things, he brought them here, he’s responsible for them, he has to keep them safe from the other dimensions, let alone their own. So what if their feelings are hurt or they sustain minor injuries? Easily treatable, and the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term inconveniences)
But then I wrote Amina into the draft and really, the second she’s in there any sort of villainy goes straight out the window. She’s fairly one-dimensional as a villain but she;’s obviously malevolent compared to him so that takes him down a peg.
Also, I’ve doodled versions of Thanatos Delta and Thanatos Omega before. Delta was from the world dominated by military dictatorships, so it makes sense Veive Delta would become something like it too. Anki, the space station, always existed in a sort of rigid, military-esque hierarchy, with everyone needing to contribute to survival or else everyone would fucking die, because a space station is difficult to maintain and repair. I imagine Veive would be like that too; in prime timeline they’ve stabilized enough that the “everyone needs to pitch in to keep this machine running” has slowly slipped over the decades; in Delta, it never went away. Thanatos Delta, seen before before he got tied up with this experiment nonsense, probably would have either been assigned, based on standardized test scores, or applied to, say, an Engineering department or something similar for an apprenticeship once he was done with secondary schooling. The concept of going to get a higher degree wouldn’t ordinarily be open to him unless a) there was a need to be filled, that is, he would bring his supervisor proof that he had a research plan in mind and that said research could prove useful, or b) He rose in the ranks enough that it’d be necessary to keep doing his job. So he probably wouldn’t be a doctor, just sort of an apprentice, like everyone else. Sure, he may have been bright enough or motivated enough or talented enough for his superiors to take notice and recommend he go and get his degree, but he very well might not have been, too, just living out his life as a blue-collar worker sort of thing.
But that basically just explains why his work jumpsuit looks vaguely like a military uniform. It sort of is.
I like the concepot that the other dimensions actually have a lot more subtle differences than people realize. People saw the major events of the Delta timeline and just assumed, “oh, this is a universe where General Aloisburg never got overthrown and Anki Station began to expand into this massive military machine, as would have obviously happened here if not for the political turmoil, yes, of course,” except the more you look at the little details, the more this story starts to fall apart: like how the dates General Aloisburg was elected in Prime and when he was elected in Delta are vastly different, and the timelines actually don’t match up at all--Aloisburg Delta was elected as a later date than Aloisburg Prime, and having learned from his younger self’s mistakes and being a bit more cautious, was able to edge out any other political opponents in a way that Aloisburg Prime wasn’t able to do--because Prime was brilliant; he took power quickly, but when he was a still younger man, and he made several mistakes that lead to his outing.
Or the fact that, say, perhaps Thanatos Delta’s father didn’t die when he was eighteen, he died earlier, or later, or not at all, which wouldn’t make sense if Delta was supposed to be the same as Prime up until a certain point only a few decades ago. 99.99999999% of people don’t know anything about the different timelines, or even that they exist, and those that do typically don’t bother looking close enough to spot those little details that might make them question the common story. So perhaps Thanatos Delta isn’t as similar to Thanatos Prime as one would think. At the very least, he wasn’t trained in astrophysics and probably doesn’t understand most of it, but when Amina Delta got a hold of him, guess what his new specialty was??? You mean you don’t know anything about it? Here’s a textbook and a taped intro course from the Lyceum; learn fast.
Inktober Day 25 Bonus: No reason behind this. I was just thinking I wasn’t super stoked for the upcoming week, because...eh, Marcus, Marcus could be cut too, I don’t want to finish out the month with him, I’d rather draw more animal aliens, because that’s fun, and Dr. Max (on doing some skimming) was pretty funny. he was too old to give a shit about most things and old enough that people let him do whatever the fuck he wanted because he was going to die soon anyway.
This isn’t polished at all, the proportions are janky as fuck., but it looks close enough to what I picture. Sort of I see the Biralo as sort of a sister species to the Erebians (sort of like the relationship of Neanderthals to humans), in that they probably had a common genetic ancestor millennia ago, it’s just the Elders decided to start messing with things and wound up putting the Biralo on another planet...a planet orbiting close to a very bright star (brighter and hotter than our Sun), so the UV index on that planet is enough that humans need total radiation protection, and even the comparatively radiation-resistant Erebians think, “well, the sun’s quite bright, maybe I should cover up and put on some SPF 100.” So, in order to combat this, instead of losing their hair like the Erebians did, when the moved underground, the Biralo just evolved a fuckton more. You can see this in the way I draw Serena--the idea being that the hairs in front are so short is because the Erebians can’t really grow their hair past a certain point, so the earlier layers are really just like baby hairs or something, that’s as long as they’ll get. Serena probably has more hair on her head because she walks bipdeal all the time and because a head of hair is good radiation protection, but even then there’s a limit to how much her fur/hair will grow. Those limits...are much less on Dr. Max. Sure, the fur on his body usually only has a set length, but the fur on his head? No problemo. (Also apparently the Erebians gained a finger along the way somewhere.)
He’s obviously feline-based, but you can see the similarities in the way I draw his face. I picture him now with a black nose (extra melanin = more sun protection) and black claws, even though I described them as gross and yellowish originally. Green eyes and he’s so old his fur is now all white, rather than the spotted calico pattern it was in his youth. I see his limbs as all knobbly and arthritic, hence the cane, not sure if that came across though. Also I fucked up his feet somehow, I feel like he shouldn’t have that heel thing. He moved to Veive in his older age because Veive’s lower gravity was easier on his arthritis, plus I imagine if he fell he’s much less likely to break a hip or something. Not that it matter, since his children and maybe his grandchildren are all dead, and the several generations after him are distant enough that they don’t really keep in touch except maybe on birthdays, he’s free to do whatever he likes otherwise.
ALSO he’s wearing a lab coat, because he is a doctor, a legit medical doctor, but...you know, not much else. His species doesn’t really wear clothes, because there’s no evolutionary pressure to do so (their hair protects from UV and keeps them warm, and the planet is warm enough that the fur is sufficient), so they really don’t have a nudity taboo (and if they need to carry things, they have invented bags, or maybe something like ponchos or loose wraps for inclement or especially cold weather). I wanted aliens who weren’t just cat people but also had a distinct cultural difference as wel. So, no nudity taboo. On a planet full of humans and Erebians (who have some level of nudity taboo, although to a lesser extent, and even then everyone thinks humanity just passed its weirdness onto them as far as that’s concerned). Humans kind of don’t like it when you walk around with your wang just hanging out (let alone if it looks more like a cat’s), so usually if he’s wearing the lab coat, and it’s buttoned up...yeah. But some days he just really doesn’t want to wear that, so to accommodate he will wear that sort of thong. He is even considerate enough to make it white like his fur so you don’t immediately notice. Once you see it you can’t unsee it, but a passing glance can make you not notice it because it blends in.
Appearance-wise, I see his species as looking like Maine Coons, with the large ruff at the chest and the sort of...sideburns? It obviously doesn’t translate well to human proportions, but I see the “sideburns” as being sort of the key sex difference: men develop them more/longer/at all, and maybe a bigger fluff of fur on the chest/woman develop small chest fluffs and no sideburns. The linework was getting really messed up and I was having a hard time telling wtf I was even drawing any more so I did that front doodle to sort of give me a better idea of what I was trying to capture. Still a work in progress, but not terrible concept.
