Fluffvember prompt - Going on an adventure // Malon and Link go to Castle Town and chaos ensues
(Featuring Malon and Link in an established friendship with a hint of something more <3)
“Oh… I don’t know, Link, I can’t go like this!”
Link threw a confused look over his shoulder, feeling his chest bubbling with both excitement and bewilderment. “But Malon, you always look like a mess when you work in the field, anyway.”
Malon froze, cheeks as flushed as her red hair, eyes widening. Link stared at her a moment longer and then realized his mistake. Before he could hastily backtrack, though, Malon groaned.
“That’s the point though – I wanted to look nice today!”
“That’s not the point of today,” Link replied, easing Epona’s steady trot so he was alongside his friend. He reached out to her, only a little shyly, and twirled one of the little bits of hair spilling out of the cloth she’d tied around her head. “Besides, you always look beautiful when we go to Castle Town.”
Malon watched him for a moment, face softening, and she leaned in just enough that his finger brushed her cheek. Link took the invitation, letting his thumb trace along her face a moment before Epona nickered a little and the pair pulled away from each other. Malon huffed, “Oh, fine, Epona, I’ll stop complaining.”
Link chuckled and watched as she took off the handkerchief, revealing two braids she’d interwoven on each side of her head. They were a little frizzy, but they looked pretty nice, and it reminded him of some of the Gerudo warriors he’d interacted with in the past. Seeing as they’d been the inspiration for the hairstyle, he wasn’t surprised.
“Does it look okay?” Malon asked.
Link smiled. They’d already agreed that today was just for fun – no worries, no cares about chores or responsibilities or appearances – but he knew she still needed the reassurance. “It looks great.”
Malon beamed. “Okay. I always wanted to try it – the Gerudo have such pretty hairstyles! There’s no way I could ever have that fancy jewelry they wear but this’ll have to do.”
The pair continued their trek towards Castle Town in peace, and Link found himself almost giggling. Two days ago they’d agreed to take a trip to Castle Town purely for fun – no milk runs, no errands, no melancholy gazes towards the castle. This day was just for them to explore Castle Town in ways they hadn’t – Link recalled running around the area as a child, but as his journey had continued it had become less of a priority.
Not to mention seeing what Ganondorf had done to the place had messed with his mind a fair amount. He’d spent his first return to Castle Town after that just roaming around making sure everyone was alive. He still sometimes found himself staring into dark alleys too long, wondering if a ReDead was around the corner or if he’d find another dying soldier.
But today wasn’t about reassurances, nor was it filled with the busyness of doing work for Talon.
Link discovered, though, as they reached the moat, that he had no idea what to do if the day was just about him and Malon.
His friend seemed to retain her excitement, though, and she nearly leapt off her horse, handing the reigns off to a stableman at the gate. Link followed, smiling at her infectious cheer, but mind scrambling for ideas as to what they should do.
“Okay,” Malon said with a happy clap of her hands as they stood at the entrance to the city. “…Now what?”
Link couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him. Apparently he wasn’t the only one feeling a little lost.
“This is fine!” Malon argued at his cackling. “We said we’d make today about ourselves, and we will! Okay! So! What’s a place in Castle Town you always wanted to visit but never had time?”
Link hummed, thinking about it. “Bombchu bowling?”
Malon looked at him, nose scrunched. “I thought you had gone bowling?”
“Once,” Link answered before shuddering. “But one of the rounds… it was fun, but… well, maybe it’s changed since then.”
His friend continued to give him a bewildered expression before shrugging. “Well, let’s try it!”
Before Link had a second to register her words, she had grabbed him by the wrist and was dragging him through the market square. Running around with Malon without a care in the entire world was honestly more exhilarating than he had expected, and he laughed as he passed her, turning it into a race. Malon yelled in protest and the two practically barreled through the entrance and nearly ran over a patron already inside.
After a sheepish shrug from Link and an embarrassed apology from Malon, the two got their bombchus and headed to the bowling lane. Link recognized the first round immediately – they’d upgraded the device a little, and it looked like it had seen some wear and tear, but the blade trap still looked roughly the same as it had when he was a child.
He got by it just as easily as he had back then, too. Malon cheered him on with delight.
The next round, however…
“A cuccoo?” Malon questioned as the little feathered terror traipsed about. “What if it gets hurt?”
“They’re indestructible, Malon, don’t worry,” Link grumbled.
“Oh!” Malon scoffed. “They’re not and you know it! Is this why you stopped playing this game?”
Link sent the bombchu rolling, watching as it climbed the wall and made it into the next goal. “No…”
The destroyed wall crumbled, revealing the final round, and he saw his adversary, much to his dread. He felt the bottom drop out of his stomach, as if Ganondorf himself were standing there and cackling evilly. “That’s why.”
The final barrier to get through, beyond the blade trap and the cuccoo was a monstrous sized cuccoo, large enough to rival Link in height and twice his girth. Malon’s mouth dropped.
“What kind of cuccoo is that?” she asked.
“A demon,” Link answered.
“So did you never get passed it?”
“Passed it?!” Link repeated, motioning wildly at the beast. “Why would I even try? Do you want to anger that thing?! I had hoped I’d outlived it by now!”
“I’m still trying to figure out how it got so big,” Malon said thoughtfully, staring the monstrosity down.
“You’re not actually considering getting near it, are you?” Link asked worriedly.
“Well, the good news is that if the bombchus don’t bother the little one, this baby definitely won’t care if you miss!” Malon noted with a laugh. “But my goodness, it sure is big. You could ride it like a horse!”
Link felt the blood drain out of his face at the mere thought of it.
“Oh, stop being silly!” Malon huffed, nudging him aside with her hip. Electricity shot through him as she did so, unaware that he was now trying to catch his breath as she bit her lip in concentration to figure out how to aim the bombchu properly. When she released it, it managed to pass the blade trap and the little cuccoo, but the large one inhabited too much space to bypass. The bombchu let out a boom! and Malon gasped, covering her mouth.
The cuccoo clucked, unimpressed, before taking a small step to the left, foraging for food.
“I should’ve used that thing to fight Ganondorf,” Link muttered.
“We only have two left,” Malon noted, sounding a little disappointed. “We’ll have to try harder.”
Link looked between his friend and the cuccoo. This was definitely the stage that he had given up as a child – he’d had more pressing matters to attend to anyway, and there was no sense in risking his life when Hyrule needed to be saved. But now… watching the sad pout to Malon’s face emboldened him, just as seeing others in need always did.
Besides, the prize was a heart piece, a magical item that could grant some protection and healing enchantments. It could certainly come in handy. And it would look pretty on some jewelry for her.
Link took a fortifying breath and gently pushed Malon aside, taking the bombchus. “I’ll handle it.”
He calculated the path he would need to take carefully. Bypassing the first two obstacles was easy. He’d probably have to let the bombchu climb the wall to access the goal and get around the gigantic cuccoo.
Link released the bombchu and the pair watched it go. When it got through the cuccoo without a hitch, Link couldn’t help the little cheer that escaped him, only for his face to fall in disappointment as the bombchu exploded outside the goal.
Well… great. Now they only had one left.
A devious idea popped into his mind, and he paused, considering it. Doing what he was planning would technically be cheating, but… it was already an unfair advantage to have such an adversary on the playing field without a way to defeat it.
Handing the bombchu to Malon, Link said, “Wait for my signal and then send it off.”
“Your signal?” Malon repeated, confused. “What signal?”
Link surveyed the area, knowing he’d caught sight of it earlier—ah, there it was. A large pot, tucked into a corner, and filled with a familiar scent. He traipsed over to the pot and turned sharply, his shoulder hitting the rim and knocking it clean over.
Wheat grains spilled everywhere, and, as predicted, the cuccoos immediately squawked in excitement. Malon hastily let the bombchu loose as Link ran for his life from the oncoming feathery horde, yelping to avoid the frantic owner of the bowling alley. The bombchu hit its target, knocking the final wall away to reveal the heart piece awaiting its victors.
“Was that really the best way to do that?” Malon whispered as Link shrugged at the owner with a sheepish smile.
“Listen,” Link fired back quietly. “That blasted bird has been hoarding that heart piece for almost a decade. Which means people have been throwing bombchus at it for a decade. This way, the bird finally gets to retire from being attacked.”
Malon scrunched her nose in the way that he loved, the way she would when she was debating a matter. Her eyes narrowed looking at him, reading through his excuse but giving in to it nonetheless. “I suppose you’re right.”
The pair blinked as they went out into the sunlight once more, and, after Link offered a giggling Malon the heart piece, found themselves stuck again.
“Now what?” Link asked.
“This is ridiculous, we should’ve planned an itinerary,” Malon huffed with some amusement.
“I think that was against the whole idea of the day,” Link offered with a small smile.
“Well clearly we’re not good at being spontaneous!” Malon sighed.
That didn’t seem true at all, but Link wasn’t going to argue the point. What they clearly were awful at was not having something to do. Both kept themselves busy, either with farm work or adventuring, and that was the reason Talon had suggested they take a day off.
“You two work so much you’ll work your lives away,” he’d said. “Go to town and have fun! The ranch will still be here and intact when you get back.”
It had taken a few more days to convince Malon that her father wouldn’t be sleeping on the job before they’d finally agreed. And here they were, barely at midday and already over it.
“I see people throw rupees into the fountain,” Link commented. “They do it all the time. Maybe there’s something to it?”
“They just do that to make wishes,” Malon commented, though she guided him to the fountain nonetheless. “I’ve heard people talk about it. Dad and I did it once – I wished—”
Suddenly, she cut herself off, stopping short of the fountain. Link paused, peering around her shoulder to look at her face. Malon swallowed, chewing the inside of her lip and hastily moved ahead. “Well, never mind that, maybe we—”
In her haste, Malon lost her footing, tripping on uneven cobblestone, and she nearly faceplanted into the fountain itself. Link moved forward quickly to catch her, grabbing at the back of her shirt and instead successfully falling with her. He pulled her to him and turned to take the brunt of the fall, and they both nearly gasped in a lungful of water as the cold temperature shift shocked their systems. Thankfully, the fountain was shallow, and the pair instead lay half soaked in the water, blinking at each other in bafflement at what had just happened.
Malon laughed. Link found himself laughing too, especially at the exaggerated noises of surprise and irritation from the local women who had been gossiping while waiting in line for one of the market stands.
“Make a wish, fairy boy!” she giggled.
“I wish…” he started uncertainly, still chuckling and coughing slightly on water.
“Not out loud!” Malon interrupted, clamping a hand over his mouth and making them both fall into the water once more with a squeal. After a moment, though, she made a disappointed noise as she looked down at herself. “Oh, this dress is going to be ruined. As if I didn’t look questionable enough.”
“What are you talking about?” Link asked, leaning forward and putting her sopping wet hair over her shoulder. A mischievous glint shone in his eye and pulled at his lips. “You are… more beautiful than Princess Zelda.”
Malon stared at him a moment before catching the reference, poking his chest. “Oh, and you are just as handsome as the King of Hyrule.”
The pair stared at each other a moment longer before the façade fell apart as they burst into fits of laughter. The sour look from the familiar married couple who constantly subjected everyone to such sappy lines with their innumerable public displays of affection was definitely amusing enough to send Link into full-on hysterics.
Eventually, the cold water began to get a little too chilly, and the pair climbed out of the fountain (Link was definitely tempted to fish the rupees out of the water, but he felt that would be rude). They decided spending the afternoon laying outside the Temple of Time might be a good way to dry off and relax. Malon started to doze a little bit, but somehow the idea of sleeping by the temple left Link feeling far too ill at ease to actually get any rest. Instead, he settled for watching Malon and the occasional passerby who went to pray.
When evening fell, both Link and Malon realized they hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and decided dinner at one of the local restaurants was in order. Link had no idea how to order, having never been to a restaurant, and Malon was not of much help since she mostly spent her days at the ranch, but they managed to figure it out. When that was done, most of the townsfolk had begun to head home, and Malon wondered if they should as well.
At least until the stray dogs came out.
Gasping in delight, Malon reached down to pet one, and Link started to chase a few as more chased him. The two giggled and ran all over the city, watched only by the guards leading to the castle, who didn’t bother hiding their smiles.
It wasn’t until the moon was high in the sky that they realized their mistake.
“Wait!” Malon said, stopping suddenly. “The gate! The gate closes at sunset!”
Link froze. “Oh.”
They had to stay the night here.
Well. Unless…
“I could… there is a way…” Link said hesitantly. “But… only if you really want to.”
Malon looked around uncertainly. “Is it dangerous?”
“Not really, no.”
“Oh,” his friend wrung her hands nervously. “Can we? I don’t… I’ve never spent a night away from home. It’s silly, I guess, but…”
Link smiled. “Don’t worry, I got it.”
Pulling his ocarina from his pack (despite Talon’s insistence that he take no weapons to the city, Link had still grabbed all his supplies), he played the familiar song that had saved his neck plenty of times. The notes danced out with a little bit of hesitancy as he tried to remember the fingering on the instrument, but as he gained confidence and added the correct rhythm, he felt the ocarina warm with magic.
In the blink of an eye, the moon nearly plummeted to the horizon, making Link’s heart stop for just a second despite knowing it was going to happen, and the sun sprang up.
Malon’s jaw dropped. “How did you—?”
“Let’s go!” Link said with a laugh, grabbing her by the wrist. The citizens of Castle Town blearily peaked out of their homes, windows opening in as people peered around in confusion. When they reached the guard house at the gate, the soldiers were staring up at the sky, eyes wide.
Link cleared his throat. “Excuse me. Can you open the gate, please?”
The guard stared at him. “W-wh—but it’s—”
“It’s clearly day,” Link said innocently with a smile. “The gate’s supposed to open at sunrise.”
The guard couldn’t offer an argument, and so Malon and Link got their steeds. Epona seemed to be staring at Link judgingly, and he laughed at her expression. She’d seen him do this trick a number of times, after all, and it usually resulted in little sleep for either of them. Thankfully, that wouldn’t be the case today.
After all, he could make it night again once they got back to the ranch.
“Link, how did you do that?” Malon asked as they rode out into Hyrule Field.
“Just a trick I learned on the road,” Link tossed back casually.
“You know you can’t keep dodging my questions about that stuff,” Malon replied.
No, he supposed he couldn’t. But not today. Today was just for fun. And it had been fun. He hoped it could end that way too.
When they got back to the ranch, Link was endlessly entertained (and unsurprised) to find that Talon hadn’t even noticed the daylight and was instead snoring loudly in his room. Link played the ocarina again, and the sun and moon traded places once more.
“That’s… disorienting,” Malon noted as she stared at the sky.
“It could get that way, yeah,” Link huffed. When he looked back down he saw Malon staring at him. “Uh… what is it?”
Malon sighed, looking at the ground. “Nothing. I just… wish you’d talk to me. I know I’m just a dumb farm girl, but—”
“Malon,” he interrupted hastily. “I don’t think—you’re not—”
“I had fun today,” she interrupted with a small smile. “Did you?”
Link stumbled over all the words that had been spilling out of his mouth, and he took a breath, returning her smile. “Yeah… yeah, I did. And…”
He trailed off, uncertain how to continue. Malon watched him curiously, though she still held a degree of coolness after her previous statements. Clearly he’d hurt her feelings a little, and he felt awful for it.
He still struggled to figure out what to say. So instead, he stepped forward, planting a chaste kiss on her cheek. He felt her face grow warm under the touch, and the blush he saw confirmed it as he pulled away. “I thought today was nice too.”
Malon fanned her face with an exasperated, “Oh, you! That wasn’t funny!”
Link laughed nonetheless, pulling her into a hug, and she laughed with him, returning the embrace in full.

LoZ: LU - The Lantern of the Lost
I have this idea for an item that's been rolling around in my head for several years.
It's a black frame lantern with a peculiar flame inside.
Like this:
Tumblr media
The lantern has a tassel attached to the bottom with a silver, flower-shaped bell, that when it rings, it draws in Poe Souls so long as they haven't taken on the form of enemy Poes. Those souls then join the flame until it is time for them to be taken to the Bargainer Statues.
The flame itself almost seems to pulse like a heartbeat.
Regardless, its design would have a definitive Sheikah influence. Not technologically, but magically & design wise. Even featuring a very ancient iteration of the Mind's Eye symbol, one with a very destinctly Depths script style design to it.
Something kinda like this:
Tumblr media
(Obviously not done. There are definitely some mistakes. Also not sure which looks better.)
Other designs could include Depths-style versions of the Shadow Medallion symbol & such things.
Anyway, when held by someone who hasn't unlocked said ability, it will merely act as an ordinary, if magically-powered lantern with an ordinary flame. Though, it will consume the holder's magic, just not very quickly.
However, it has to be the actual Mind's Eye. Otherwise, the flame won't be the one in the picture above & won't be able to house the Poe Souls. It doesn't work with the Lense of Truth or the Mask of Truth. There's just a different level & even quality of magic that runs through your 3rd eye when you have access to the ability itself that very simply can't be fully replicated artificially. Sure, the Mind's Eye can't literally see through chests the way the Lense of Truth can, but it has a number of other benefits that the Lense doesn't.
Something else is that the light from the lantern can essentially project the power of the Mind's Eye outward, thus allowing those around the holder to also see the spirits. Both living & dead ones. Not to mention passed illusions. You see, someone with the power can see the Poe Souls as people. Much like how the ghosts of Rhoam & the Champions appeared. Though, more wispy & most normal people only have a couple of those little green flames floating around them. It also allows those nearby to hear the Poe Souls speak.
Though the Shadow Soldiers are merely echos of the people they were. The souls of those soldiers have already moved on, but they were able to leave a bit of themselves behind. Their dying wish to protect Hyrule in whatever way they could is what allowed such shadows to manifest. One with the Mind's Eye & those near them while holding the lantern could hear the Shadow Soldiers too, but it'd be little more than whispers of what they'd been thinking & feeling at the time of their death. Their most desperate desire. The one that keeps such echos anchored to the Depths.
Which brings up something. The fact that a lot of the Links seem to have a tendency towards seeing, interacting with, or soothing spirits or ghosts. You think it's something to do with the Spirit of the Hero?
Either way, I'd really like to see a half-Sheikah Link using this lantern. So, maybe this could be a part of the Library of Nayru story.
Either way, I'd want whichever Link ends up with it to also learn the Song of Healing & the Song of the Sun for the sake of soothing the souls of the dead.
Of course, it wouldn't always work immediately. Sometimes, Link would have to help them finish something or talk to them about something. Though, in the case of Poes & Imp Poes having taken on enemy form, it'd require a bit more work. Specifically, "killing" them with either a Light or Twilight-based attack. Either from a spell or a weapon. Doing so will destroy them & leave behind both a Poe Soul & a few Dark Clumps.
Such methods also work on undead enemies, such as Stals, Redeads, & Gibdos, & corrupted enemies such as Wolfos, Bullbos, Vulpos (the Keaton enemies from MC), Iron Knuckles, Furnixes, ect.
In the case of the latter, it purifies them, turning them back to their original forms. And in the cases of the Keatons, Iron Knuckles, & Furnixes, you'll get something out of it. If not rewards, then information or quests at the very least later on.
In fact, I could see purifying a Keaton near the beginning of the game ending up being the linchpin to Link learning the Mind's Eye technique to begin with. Perhaps the Keaton even becomes the companion for this game.
Though, I can also see him getting on a lot of players' nerves, because I tend to portray the Keaton as wise & clever, but very mischievous (occasionally just outright demanding Keatonzushi & Keaton Udon). Having a distinctly Cheshire Cat vibe, though his questions always have answers & it's always something that Link is supposed to be able to figure out on his own. Aside from riddles, I also tend to see the Keaton as being fans of the Socratic Method.
By this I mean, that they ask a lot of questions, fully knowing the answers themselves, but also expects Link to be able to think for himself & thus use said questions as a way to force Link to think critically.
Despite this, they are also not shy in telling Link when he's done a good job & will always repay a favor in kind.
In a way, I suppose that I see this particular Link as the sort who genuinely enjoys things like puzzles, brainteasers, riddles, & the like. Also having that classic Hero curiosity.

Nightmares From the Void: a horror Dishonored AU
(unless this title is already taken by something else or idk sfwjdwmfjdj i've not found anything? but let me know if it does)
I've talked about it a little some time ago, and even if I have to figure out more things (this is really getting out of hands), I have some bits to share!
Putting all this under a 'read more' cuz this is going to be a huge post.
I'd love to have your thoughts about it, if you feel like it!! <3
Quick description:
This may be a Horror!AU, but it’s definitely not just “OOOO JUMPSCARES AND GORE”. Horror isn’t just that, you know? And the best part about this is looking for references and more information because this is so interesting and so much better than just blood and viscera everywhere. I really wanted them to have their own little vibe, despite everything, and playing with the different kinds of horrors and fears. This all needs a bit more thinking yet, I’m sure, but I really like it so far.
There’re uh, changes, and maybe I’m thinking this too much like a third person game? I don’t know, maybe in first person it’d still look great.
This is just about Dishonored 2 (for now, at least?), and I mostly though about the main villains, to be honest. But as time goes by (and as I’m writing this post), I want to explore the other areas too.
I find some of the ideas a bit too obvious, somehow, but eeehhh :fingerguns: My mindset was kinda 'how could we go further, and into the horror genre, than this?"
After the ritual to bring back Delilah, in 1849, powers from the Void started to spread into Aramis’ mansion, crawling into the veins of those who were here. They slowly turned them into more monstrous versions of themselves. The closer to the ritual you were, the bigger the impact the Void had on you. Some of the guards got infected as well, but way less than the main crew. Memories of alternative lives flashed through them too.
Tumblr media
Differences for the coup crew:
Mission 1: A Long Day in Dunwall
Enemies: /
Description: Something feels off, as a puppet-ish Luca arrives. Then, Delilah appears, and the crowd is horrified by her look and all the vines and flowers.
Additional notes: Delilah can flee with Alexi’s corpse, so the player must fight her later as an undead.
Boss battle: Ramsey is not affected by the Void, so nothing changes.
Tumblr media
Mission 3: The Good Doctor
Type of horror: Kind of slasher, ‘virus’, body horror
Enemies: The guards are infected with bloodflies and mushrooms (? Virus?). They technically are undead and immortal, but weak. They can be killed for good with fire. Guards + Bloodflies.
Description: The player tries to escape Grim Alex’s grip. They can carry a torch to keep her away.
Additional notes: There are a torch, blueprints and upgrades regarding fire equipment in Vasco’s belongings.
Boss battle: First, the player must find the main nest of the bloodflies and burn it. Grim Alex follows the player, and she can control the bloodflies. If the player tries to kill her, her body gets infested with bloodflies and she charges back. She is afraid of fire. Her fight only has one phase, and the player either helps her with the serum or kills her for good.
Why this? Because Alexandria is already kind of infected by something, and I think she should be a bit more unhinged when you face her. I decided to go with a wendigo/rake vibe for her. She follows you everywhere you go, and you can’t really get rid of her if you don’t have fire. Everything feels more organic yet dead at the same time. There should be a spark of hope somewhere, though.
Inspirations: RE / TLOU / Redead / Scorn / Outlast / Bloodborne
Tumblr media
Mission 4: The Clockwork Mansion
Type of horror: Psychological
Enemies: Cyborgs and clockworks. The guards are a bit weaker than the original soldiers, but they can share some capabilities. Guards + Clockworks.
Description: A kind of Hide and Seek in the mansion. The player gets knock out at the beginning and must find their stuff.
Additional notes: Sokolov is saved after the fight. They are eyes on the wall.
Boss battle: The player fights Kirin in his laboratory. He is waiting for them and jumps on his greatest clockwork (a huge one). First, the player fights the robot. Phase two, the fight is taking place beneath the laboratory, in the basement, room of the generator. The player can tear Kirin’s artificial arms/legs apart. The final move is pushing him against the generator and watching him getting electroshocked. Either it kills him or not is up to the player, depending on the power of the shock (player can get to the room before the battle).
Why this? I was thinking about more clockworks and mechanical things. In fact, the starting point of all this was for Kirin to build cyborgs too. Then, the idea of him having bugs features came to me, as a reference to him tearing their legs and such. But then, and as much as I wanted to avoid the spider thing, Kirin playing with you, as you try to escape his mansion (his web) sounded more fitting.
Inspirations: Lies of P / Shining / Bacterial Contamination / BG3 (Malus) / Mimic / Nosk / DrOctopus
Tumblr media
Mission 5: The Royal Conservatory
Type of horror: Paranormal and jump scares
Enemies: Zombies and stuffed animals. The guards are slower but hit harder. Guards + Witches + Animals.
Description:
Additional notes: Lots of illusions. Aggressive skulls. Moving around through mirrors.
Boss battle: The player has the option to fight a big cursed plush to get the defective lens. With each hit the doll takes, it loses a member part (leg, arm…) and the player must destroy them too before they go back to the doll. Then, mirror labyrinth to get to Breanna, while the player is followed by zombies. Breanna’s fight takes place in a room surrounded by mirrors too. If the player goes behind the scenes before phase two, they can use the defective lens and remove Breanna’s powers, leading them to the non-lethal ending. Phase two, she is mostly stronger than before, but also helped by the doll if the player didn’t destroy it earlier.
Why this? I had the idea of zombies for Breanna for a long time. Again, just thinking about “how could we go further?” But zombies weren’t enough. And then I thought ‘well, there’re also a ton of dead animals there’. I also wanted to find something revolving around the lenses, or rather, glasses, hence the mirrors, and the illusions. As for the cursed plush, we already know witches have some voodoo plushies they use from time to time, so I thought it was a good reference to this too.
Inspirations: Twilight Princess (Blizzeta) / Collector (Hollow Knight)
Tumblr media
Mission 7: A Crack in the Slab
Type of horror: Liminal spaces and gothic horror
Enemies: Ghosts. The guards don’t attack the player unless player attacks them first. They have 1 hp and respawn at each time switch. Guards.
Description: The player travels through Aramis’ mind. They must find all the broken memory pieces to restore Aramis’ health and spirit. The player starts with a 45 minutes chrono. After 15 minutes, the level starts to fall apart. The player can use clocks and hourglasses to slow or speed time.
Additional notes: The level falls apart, much like Aramis’ mind. Clocks, hourglasses. Maybe some enigmas. The player still can’t use their powers.
Boss battle: Race against time. The player must travel through past and present to stop the boss – who is TBD still (a strange chimera? And echo of Luca?). To help Aramis fully recover, the player must defeat it. Else, they can either decide to kill him or let him stay insane.
Why this? What better than liminal spaces and fear of the nothing for Aramis? His mind is falling apart, and so is the level. You must be a bit quick into this labyrinth. As I’m writing this, this needs some more thinking, but maybe thanks to a new power (or simply, a better ‘Possession’) you can go to Aramis’ mind instead of just wondering around his mansion. The idea stays the same, but still.
Inspirations: Backrooms / Crys Tales / Poes
Tumblr media
Mission 8: The Grand Palace
Type of horror: Survival…?
Enemies: Puppets. The guards are more agile, dodge more the attacks. Guards.
Description:
Additional notes: Show off. The player must repair the false duke and the pieces are all around the palace. Inspired by the royalty and the Game. Some puppets and guards wear masks. There are music boxes in the palace (around the ballroom). Puppet and some bits of flesh.
Boss battle: Luca waits for the player in his ballroom, where they find multiple false dukes dancing with the ‘guests’. They must find the right one and defeat him. They can also be helped by a dysfunctional puppet they must repair first – Armando. Then, Luca twisted and turns into a giant puppet with wacky movements.
Why this? So, this might be the less ‘horror’ one, somehow. Depends on if you are fine with getting surrounded by puppets or not. But why puppets? Because Luca longs for control. He is creating himself a perfect little world where everyone will obey him. And yet, he is one of them, because Delilah is already using him. I had in mind a ballroom, more excessive and unnecessary shows off. He is rich, he is powerful, he doesn’t care about the others.
Inspirations: Little Nightmares / Steelrising (ambient) / Skull kid puppets / Nutcracker
Tumblr media
Mission 9: Death to the Empress
Type of horror: Analog horror and strange imagery, a bit of dark fantasy but tiny bit
Enemies: A bit of everything and living paintings. The guards are moving when the player is not watching. The paintings can catch and block the player, attack them or simply scare them. Guards + Witches + Clockworks + Paintings.
Description:
Additional notes:
Boss battle: First, the player fights her outside, but there are other living paintings that attack them. Every weakness moment of Delilah, the player can reunite her with her soul. Then, she runs into her perfect world, the player shall follow her, but instead they find a crying Jessamine. They have a small chat together, until the player realizes it’s Delilah using her powers to stab where it hurts. The player then fights Delilah, but with Jessamine’s appearance. Lastly, Delilah charges a final blow, and statues are attacking the player. They must survive a certain amount of time. Then, the final blow explodes and both her and the player are thrown out of the painting. The player wakes up before she does, and either they decide to kill her or not by messing with the ritual.
Why this? Well, I know analog horror is also about found footage and doesn’t suit Dishonored, but the weird imagery looks just fine for a painter. Also, what about moving statues? Surely this is not new, and not all of them would move obviously.
Inspirations: Mandela Catalogue / A Hat in Time / Layers of fear / Canvas Curse (Drawcia)
And that's ... almost it? Wait, could this be... what's up there???
Epilogue: Secret Meeting
Type of horror: Cosmic horror
Description: If the player found all the runes and bonecharms throughout the game, after the credits they appear in the Void. The Outsider comes to them to talk about their run, their choices, and asks them if they wish to see his true form. Then, the player can decide to fight him.
Why this? Because I wanted to add cosmic horror to the list! And the Outsider is already kind of that, the Void is a space beyond true comprehension and such. I still have to figure out his ‘true form’ as a powerful being.
Inspirations: Lovecraft
AND NOW, that's about it so far! As you can see, some things still need a good thinking and such, to be worked on. I've also started to think about a playlist, but I'm not sure about it yet and this is going to be for later. There'll definitely be more to it, I just don't know when lol.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU'VE READ IT ALL, it means a lot!!!! 💗💗💗

"Why does this fandom have to create so much angst all the time? The games were fun, right? Let the boys be happy!"
While I generally, wholeheartedly agree with and love the, "maybe it was an adventure" viewpoint, I've been thinking recently about why, for example, so much of what I write is angst. The short answer is projection, but I wanted to dive deeper. Why these boys, specifically? Why not some other characters from some other fandom? Why would I take such happy bois from such happy games and angst them into oblivion?
It's fun to push buttons. To swing an imaginary sword. Play fighting against invisible foes is fun, because there's no real mortal danger involved. At the end of the day, The Legend of Zelda is a video game series. A video game series that wants to be fun, that wants to sell the joy of adventure, the accomplishment of saving the day and being the hero. And those are valid! I definitely think those are key aspects of their journeys and should be included in fanworks, featured even!
But... That's not the whole story. Pushing buttons from the comfort of your sofa is one thing. Actually, physically being there, experiencing the exertion and adrenaline and injuries of combat, the pressure of actual time relentlessly ticking by (no pausing, no saving and quitting the game, no infinite tries against difficult enemies) as the world slowly inches towards its doom... Those would be very real for the boys, who, in a sense, live in those worlds.
Remember Dead Hand? Redeads? Guardians? Some other boss or monster that gives you all the nightmares? Think about how terrifying they are when your life isn't on the line. When you can pause the game, turn off the console, get up and go do something else. Simulated fear and actual, life-threatening terror are very different. Your body and brain make darned sure to remember when your life is on the line and make very very sure that you don't ever want to try that again.
But the Links do.
They try, they fight, they soldier on. They don't give up and they don't give in. How many of us would do the same, were our lives actually on the line like theirs would be? How exhausted would we be? How many of us would end up breaking down, literally unable to continue the journey ahead of us? How much worse, more vivid and debilitating, would those nightmares be?
And yet, there is joy.
They smile, they laugh, they wonder at their surroundings. They offer a helping hand to those around them, kick back and relax with mini-games, and take time to explore their beautiful world. Their trials, though horrific, do not break them. Because that is what it means to have a Hero's Spirit in this world of LoZ: no matter what happens, no matter what or how much they suffer, they will. Not. Ever. Break.
They won't become jaded. They'll still see the joy in life. They won't ever give up, won't ever have to. They will always defeat evil in the end because they will always overcome whatever is thrown at them. Up to and including death itself.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could say the same?
I can't speak for everyone, but I angst these fine young men primarily because I want to explore how an unbreakable soul would handle my horrors, my problems, my struggles and inner turmoil, and still come out okay on the other end. How do they manage it? If an "unbreakable spirit" is the rule, how does that look? How does that work?
What can I learn about myself by putting these guys through hell?
The light is made brighter to our eyes after suffering in darkness. Anguish and pain carve out the depths of the soul required to feel exquisite joy. These young men, these little boys, these heroes aren't happy in spite of the horrors they've suffered.
They're able to experience that joy precisely because they've suffered.
So yes, let the boys be happy. Let them laugh. Let them have fun. But always remember: There is no true joy without the experience of pain.

DAY 6: YOU LIED TO ME
[Mild on whump. Trying my hand at a Warrior’s Hyrule trope I love]
Stalls crowded the streets in Warrior’s Hyrule. People moved in unpredictable tides, going wrong ways and in eddies instead of flows.
Wind wasn’t sure how he got separated so quickly from the others. He’d only been looking at the food a little bit. One moment he was walking behind Legend, the next he realized the person ahead of him was a lady in a red tunic with blue hair, her face nearly buried in a book.
Wind stopped in the middle of the crowd, looked around, and groaned.
How long have I been following this lady? He searched the crowd for his brothers, but they must have been long gone by now.
How was he supposed to find them in this crowd, anyway? He needed a crow's nest. There were stairs that led to a tall building ahead, a guard at the top. Maybe he could get up and get a better view.
Towering turrets came into view as he rounded the corner. The castle! He didn’t even need to climb to see it.
Wind made his way to the breathtaking structure until his path led to the gates. Off-duty guards milled around at a tavern near the entrance.
“Excuse me, um, Sir…knights? Have you seen Captain Link around? We got separated, and I really need to get back.”
“Oh!” The knight replied, handing his drink to a friend who stared at Wind as if seeing a redead. The first soldier seemed unfazed, so Wind ignored the other. “Yeah, I remember seeing you with him. I just saw him, actually. Let me send word with some messengers in case they find him first, but I saw him come this way,” the guard smiled warmly.
“Thanks!” How cool to have a whole crew to help defend Hyrule. Wind felt a little jealous of the knights among the heroes, who didn’t have to face Ganon alone, who had skilled fighters at their back. Then again, Tetra was a one-kid army.
Wind smiled back at the soldier and sighed in relief. Thank Oshus that Warrior was probably one of the easiest Links to track down. If it had been Hyrule’s Hyrule… Wind guessed he’d probably have a pack of moblins chewing on his legs like a cuckoo wing long before ever finding the Traveler. He shivered. He’d never say it to his face, but his era was the worst era by far. Actually, he probably had said it to his face, now that he thought about it. The poor teen looked like death when he first showed up. At least the bags under his eyes had finally faded.
He wished he could show them Outset Island, but he didn’t want Shadow opening more portals leading monsters to his home.
The guard turned to listen to a messenger whisper something in his ear, and turned with a smile to Wind. “Excellent. He’s waiting for you at the stables.”
Warrior’s Hyrule was a dream by comparison. It had all the excitement Aryll and Tetra and the crew could want, and seas of grass he could run through for days. Traveling with the chain showed him just how amazing having more than an island to travel could be. Still, he couldn’t wait to show them what real fun looked like—sailing open seas with a full sail, conducting the wind, exploring for treasure with your crew.
Wind followed the man away from the tavern and around a corner.
“In here?” They came to a stable. The knight stood in the door, welcoming him inside. The stalls reeked horribly.
“Link prefers a bit of privacy. Not everyone is a fan of his,” he explained.
Wind knew the other Links loved their big, stinky horses, so chided himself for being surprised that he’d come here. Wind had good money on a bet with Four that Warrior also had an Epona. Sky had bet that Legend had one, and Hyrule had bet on both Warrior and Wild.
Not everyone is a fan of his. Something about the words nagged at him.
“What do you mean?” Wind asked.
“Oh, we’re big fans of the Captain, though. Happy to follow him. Just one moment. I think I see him coming…” The soldier stood on his toes to look to the far end of the stable where another set of doors stood open to another street.
A sting on his neck and darkness closing around him showed that was a fat lie.
He swatted at the spot and grabbed a glass vial with a tiny metal point on the end. A large hand grabbed his and held it tight, and another circled his arm and chest, pinning him. “What the…what are you doing?” he stammered. Exhaustion flooded him from the prick on his neck, weighing him down. His eyes felt heavy. But he pushed back and squirmed, trying to fight it.
“What’s going on with this brat? Spirit normally would have seen this coming a mile away. He’s never been this easy to get the drop on…” the man holding him said.
Wind slumped against his attacker. The first soldier came closer, staring at him.
Wind struggled to stay alert and remember who this stranger was and why he was here. He struggled to keep his head up enough to glare back.
“He’s smaller, isn’t he? Younger? Has our Dear Captain been messing with portals again? The kid probably doesn’t even know about it!” The venom in the man’s voice at Warrior’s title made Wind gut clench with anger, and if he was honest, a touch of fear. This man hated Wars. Clearly, they hated him too.
“The kid probably doesn’t even know about it”
Know about what? Wars, what didn’t you tell me?
He huffed heavily. Had he been running? Had they chased him? Is that why he felt so tired and out of breath? No… they were liars…
“What more damage is that monster going to cause?” a voice near his head said. They were angry. But Wind couldn't understand, couldn’t keep track of the words. Who were these people?
He was so, so tired.

LU Deepest Fear Headcanons 1
Tumblr media
These are headcanons for the deepest fears and deepest points of worry/anxiety for the chain. They may be great and powerful heroes, but they’re still humans who’ve been through some shit.
This is more of a discussion than a list of bullet point headcanons, but there’s a lot here to sink your teeth into and think about.
Time
He’s old enough to have had time to process and deal with everything he went through, so he’s one of only two in the chain who doesn’t really have any major fears or worries (the other being Legend).
He’s still got baggage from his adventures in the form of a buried but inextinguishable bitterness and seething anger, that may pop up in his mind occasionally to ruin his day or stop him getting a good night’s sleep. All the stuff that’s now made him jaded is still present, it just faded into the background as he aged.
I suppose he would be worried about the rest of the chain, seeing them as his responsibility, even though most are already adults. He’s much more to them than just a leader, there’s some found family stuff here. Most of his attention would go to Wind because he’s still a child (and I love their dynamic), and Twilight, as he’s his blood descendant and if anything happened to wolf boi, Time would not be able to forgive himself (on the flipside, Twilight worries about Time even more due to...you know why).
He also has the Fierce Deity on his mind now and then. Dreading the day he’ll inevitably resort use its power again.
Warrior
‘false friends are worse than open enemies’ - an old proverb
Monsters don’t even faze the Captain, as thanks to the War of Eras he has fought almost every one in existence, from all across the timeline. A random bokoblin? Piss easy. A Redead that can screech like a banshee? Not pleasant, but manageable. The Demon King Ganon himself? Bitch please, he and his allies had him 6 feet under before you could even blink.
What’s far scarier to him is not only having no allies, but having people you once trusted your life with turn against you. Getting stabbed in the back by a ‘friend’ is the Captain’s biggest fear. Hence why he keeps his men at arm’s length even though he’s good friends with many of them (he’ll still hang out with them outside work to bars and stuff like that).
During HW all the ‘traitors’ in the Hyrulean Army were turncoats because they were spelled, which means that their actions weren’t really their own and the blame lies on the spell caster. I’d like to think that while the Captain had to deal with these kinds of soldiers on the regular (which would haunt him anyway, because fighting and even killing your own comrades is still a harrowing experience no matter who’s in control), he had to deal with one or two instances where soldiers acting on their own free will turned against Warrior. Either directly by striking a deal with Cia/Ganon’s forces to get power/safety or indirectly by flat out ditching him on the battlefield to save themselves.
Imagine the betrayal and anger that would have festered within him after those ordeals. That kind of pain never goes away, no matter how many trustworthy people you surround yourself with in the future.
Twilight
Twi has always been on the outside looking in.
Growing up, he was probably aware that he wasn’t one of the villagers (has pointed Hylian ears, they all have rounded Ordonian ears). Despite being really involved in the community and having many people he cared about, in the back of his mind he probably felt like an outsider.
This feeling of never quite having a place where he truly belonged would be an acute sort of worry, that’s just normal to him.
He could possibly have abandonment issues. Never knowing his parents and Midna shattering the mirror are two sources of anger, hurt and most notably confusion. He has no idea who his parents were and what happened to them. Did they unfortunately pass away? Did they willingly abandon him? He has no real way of knowing and all he can do really is carry that weight until he finds it in him to let go (I feel like his friendship with Time can really help with that).
There’s also Midna. Those two formed a powerful bond during the course of TP, but at the very end Midna not only left Link but she also destroyed the one thing that could let them meet. Twi is a rational guy and probably concluded that there was a deeper reason as to why she did this (as ruler of the Twili) that didn’t involve him specifically.
Then again, I can see also Twi internalising her decision and taking it a little personally. The fact that she didn’t even talk to him about what was going on makes it worse and it left him feeling hollow. Having spent so much time together, I’d argue she was the closest he’d ever been with to a person, making the betrayal even worse.
He isn’t all that mad about it, just upset.
Plus, she’s the only person who truly understands what he went through during his adventure. Most of what happened to Twi in TP can’t really be shared with anyone else without risking being alienated. That’s obviously the last thing Twi wants, so he’d rather bottle it all up than take that chance. Perpetuating his sense of isolation and loneliness.
Sky
Having another adventure pull him from his peaceful way of life is something that deeply troubles him. We all know the lengths he went to in order to save Sun in SS and there’s that LU panel where he plays the harp and talks about missing her. To my memory, none of the others get a moment where they talk about missing someone they care about quite in this way, leading me to believe that it’s almost always on his mind.
Not being able to return to his era would be the thing he fears most. Of course, to some extent every member of the chain misses home, but I feel like the most reluctant hero is Sky.
There’s also the topic of injuries.
At a couple points in the comic he expresses discomfort at hearing stories about injuries and seeing the chain’s scars. Which makes me wonder if he has a low pain tolerance or has a fear of getting seriously hurt or even fears pain itself. If that’s the case than his lightning scars (a headcanon that’s quite popular) would be a major point insecurity for him and he probably distresses over the possibility of ever getting hurt like that again.
Legend
Not too sure about this guy. He’s been through some shit, and has had enough time to process said shit for every event in his life to kind of bleed together in his mind. He’d come at almost anything, no matter how horrific with a ‘business as usual’ or ‘eh, could be worse’ sort of attitude. He’s just too deep into this hero business to bother giving too much of a shit.
On the other hand, I feel like that’s just a front he puts up. At the very least, if something is troubling the Veteran, he won’t show it or acknowledge it. Any and all unresolved feelings or sadness that may arise from memories of a certain island are permanently locked away in the mental dungeon. Never to be exposed or see the light of day, so long as the chain minds their damn business.
There is that one tragic experience in A Link to the Past when his uncle dies- and that was his first adventure. I’ve not played the game but I’m going to assume that his uncle had a decent send off, making it a good-ish memory for Legend in the sense that it inspires him to push forward and is a relatively positive motivator for him.
So, he wouldn’t despair over the loss; it’s a normal sort of grief that sucks but everyone’s dealt with it at some point in life.
Wild
He’s been building his identity from scratch for a while now and so help him Hylia, does not want to lose himself again. I think it’s reasonable to conclude that he still struggles a lot with his new identity and constantly remenisses about his past self. He’d do things like question his decisions/judgement and wonder what pre-Calamity Wild would have done in any situation he finds himself.
In all, he is somewhat at peace with current himself. One day he will get to a point where he can finally declare that he is who he is and can stop trying to live up to the memory/legacy of his past self. But he’s far from that yet.
It doesn’t help that everyone who knew him 100 years ago still reference his past self and bring up memories that Wild still can’t remember. Flora being one of the most notable as now their dynamic is sort of reversed. Where Wild was once the walking embodiment of Flora’s failures and inadequacies, now Flora is a painful presence to Wild, reminding him of everything he’s lost about himself and his past relationships due to the Calamity. He knows now that what happened 100 years ago wasn’t solely his fault and appreciates that at the time he did his best in the chaos. He knows this, but it doesn’t always quell the internalised regret and anger at his failure. I’m not sure he even forgives himself for it yet.
Having memories suddenly trigger are welcome in the long run (even at the most random or inappropriate times), but they’re bittersweet in more ways than one.
Four
Whether the colours are a system or not, Four being able to split in the first place means he needs to always keep his emotions in check. Or at the very least he can’t let himself become unbalanced to the point where he has to split in order to sort himself out when in the presence of others. Which ironically, is a source of worry for him.
He would never split if someone made him angry just to let blue and maybe red go off on that person. That’s not a very responsible or heroic use of the Four Sword’s power, which is why I feel like he only splits if he’s experiencing deep inner conflict or in an especially tough battle.
Losing his cool and then choosing to split in scenarios where it would be best if he didn’t, is probably what worries him most. As of the colours debut in the LU comic, he’s now seen the impact the various sides of him have on others and probably wishes for something like that to never happen again.
(I think I’ve got the intended interpretation of the colours, but lmk if I’m wrong)
Hyrule
Getting injured himself/someone he’s travelling with getting injured and there being no one around to help. He almost always travels alone and so is used to relying on no one but himself no matter how difficult things get. Luckily thanks to experience and his skills nothing has gone wrong.
But what if, one day something does go wrong? What if he finds himself trapped in an unknown location and can’t escape? What if he or someone he cares about gets hurt? Sure, he has incredible healing powers...but what’s left if that fails him? What if a time comes when it’s not good enough? What can he do then? Is there anything he can do at that point? If not, what happens when there’s no one around to help?
These always plague his mind and is why despite living as a hermit, he’s always willing to accept help from others and doesn’t rely on his powers/doesn’t think them all that special.
Wind
Like the rest of the chain (Sky and Time specifically), he has people back home who love and worry about him. Still being a child, this would affect him more and be a quiet but prevalent source of worry for the tiny sailor.
Putting himself in dangerous situations is what he has to do as part of his role as an incarnation of the hero. He knows this and has the confidence and skill to pull it off. But he a fierce determination surfaces whenever things do go south and he’ll tell himself that he can’t die here, that he has to live and get back to his family. The thought of Grandma breaking down into hysterics if the news of his untimely death reached her and Aryll crying out into the ocean, screaming his name over and over kills him.
It’s enough to ruin a his sleep for the night. But a cuddle from Wolfie, dad hug from father Time or a dog pile with half the chain can put a smile back on his face.

i forgot how good the environmental storytelling in ocarina of time is. The NPCS in castle town react to ganondorf and zelda running away, there's the soldier who dies, and once you become an adult, it's all gone. You see the changes, you see what happened while you were asleep, i remember the first time i played i thought the redeads were all people in castle town that ganondorf killed, and i was relieved when i found them in kakariko

In Descant, how does Ganondorf command monsters? By turning them loose in a direction of his choosing, by using magic to enthrall them, through negotiation, or varies depending on the intelligence. I remember reading lizalfos warred with the Zora in BOTW and had structure enough to have a general
So... To be honest, I kind of decided to be a little sparse on the magical worldbuilding to avoid causing myself a concussion given this is originally a side-project and not something meant to consume my every waking thought (this is not going great right now but I'll stir it back under control eventually). I do have one, however, and it's loosely related to this.
(I kind of infodump about my magic system instead of really answering the question sorry sorry)
I decided to use the basis of the different "realms" of magical abilities embodied by the Sages in OoT: so Light, Forest, Fire, Water, Shadow and Spirit. Each of these elements encompass both a very literal manipulation of this element (whenever possible, right Spirit :) :) :) ) and a more complicated manipulation of energies associated with this element. For example: Shadow magic involves manipulating darkness directly (making a place spookier or shrouding oneself), but taken to an extreme it also encompasses decay, fear, everything dissimulated --and also, because of the nature of what is most hidden, truth. Fire is about arson, and it's also about drive and consumption; Forest is about the neat little trees, and it's also about growth and patience and ancient knowledge, etc etc. Part of mastering a given element is deepening your understanding and of just everything it really encompasses and the very complex web of how it truly affects reality, and how you can inject your own input of energy to affect it to your liking.
So a lot of basic monsters in Descant are kind of bound to being fueled by a given type of magic --and so sometimes it's just that there's Vibes in a place and so monsters appear there as a coproduct, and sometimes (and Ganondorf loves to do this) through upsetting said Vibes of a place, you can mess up the internal balance and generate an "infection", aka drastically and brutally change the magical ecosystem and invoking a bunch of things by doing so. In this kind of situation, Ganondorf isn't bound to these creatures like an invoker would be (like they don't have to obey him through a magical contract or anything), but given he generally is the person in the room with the most mastery over the type of magic that fuels the monsters he encouraged the proliferation of, the loose alliegeance happens pretty naturally. They serve his purposes, even if half-consciously and not in a way that he can use to make complex strategies like he would with actual soldiers or more complicated creations (like his phantoms).
Then, for more complex cultures where the monsters are not gohmas or redeads or things like this, I think there might be negotiations or something of a higher caliber going on but it's not a part of Descant I focused on a lot and I mostly brushed over it for the sake of uhhh narrative simplification, because it was already spinning out of control!!!
Thank you so much for your curiosity!!

▴ — @sapientiiae ;; Sheik & Zelda. Secrets.
The one thing that he had never explained to Zelda was the things that he had done while serving Ganondorf. It's easier if he doesn't, easier to keep it buried down. He knows at the very least she realizes that it wasn't alright, that it wasn't good. His reaction to Castle Town is enough, and for her part--she had never asked. Never guessed, never even pondered toward him about why he won't step foot there.
The moment that it happened, when he had to report back after, he had been late. Over a day late and both Impa and Zelda had been worried. He had been unable to meet any of their gazes and gave the report like a soldier. That redeads now filled the streets, that the civilians were turned into them in death, that monsters had wrecked the place. None of it was a lie, he just--omitted his own part.
He couldn't tell them. He thinks Impa knew though.
Now though, now that Castle Town was becoming more of a part of his life. The people and the crown. He still avoids it, he can see the strain it puts on Zelda. She's always the one dealing with the people, with their concerns, making the trekk out to Castle Town. She doesn't tell him it's to much, he knows she never will. When this started she said she would never expect more of him than he is willing to give--and people is one of those things. He has the social skills of a dried up crushed bug.
Tumblr media
"I killed them all."
He doesn't know where the words come from, why they suddenly burst out. She's tired, still bent over her desk, working on whatever it was Castle Town needed this time. Sheik's been stressed, trying to figure out how to help her and--it just came out. It fell from his lips and he wants to throw himself out the balcony again. He hasn't done that, hasn't run from her in a while. But the words are out now and he finds his throat closing up around them. The tension in his body far to tight and straining. His chest hurts, he's trembling and all he wants is it to stop.

How does Shiek fell towards Link after that adorable moment they had post redead fight?
Sheik: I don’t know that I would call it a moment exactly. I merely helped him out while he was injured and suffering the effects of the redhead screams. I would do the same for any soldier.

Not to mention seeing what Ganondorf had done to the place had messed with his mind a fair amount. He’d spent his first return to Castle Town after that just roaming around making sure everyone was alive. He still sometimes found himself staring into dark alleys too long, wondering if a ReDead was around the corner or if he’d find another dying soldier.

absolutely looove being able to teleport somewhere super high up and just dive to where i need to be. peak gameplay. anyway i'm going to SIGH the tundra
I MADE A BIRD...i made a bird with an engine and batteries!!!! it goes up and down!!!!!!!!!
oh man you could fly ANYWHERE with enough juice.....anywhere!!!
it's not great at ascending but STILL
maybe with more fans on the bottom next time, but i ran out of battery power...
BAH i missed the island i was about to drop onto bc of the blood moon >:(
oh my god this thing has a ZILLION tears on it and i dont have snowboots girl HELP
at least theres not a bunch of fucking lynels here this time, i thought, before getting attacked by a fucking bear
oh my god i FOUND IT........that took ages
ok. im bracing myself once more
SCREEEEAM. SCREAM. SCREAM SCREAM I AM NOT PREPARED
I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR WHATEVER THE FUCK. SHOULD I HAVE COME BACK LATER? I'M GETTING THEM IN ORDER FROM NOW ON THIS IS TOO MUCH
to clarify i have watched three seconds of this memory. i saw ganondorf and had to put my face in my hands and scream. ok. unpausing now. god help me
I
NEED
A
SECOND
no. wait. i need to watch that again
girl that was number TEN??????? oh my god. i'm literally gonna get a guide. in order from now on no matter WHAT!!!
first of all. FIIIRST of all. is sonia like....dead lmao rip lady
SECONDLY. i realize im having a hard time divorcing ganondorf from matt mercer. uh oh
ALSO THESE ARE THE SHOTS FROM THE TRAILER...maybe i was meant to see this now, given where it is placed...love a good nonlinear story. im still gonna try to do them in order though my heart feels ready to jump out of my chest
i still don't know if we're calling him "demon king" and he has the glowy hair and scaly look if this "counts" as demise. what a fun philosophical question. where does demise end and ganondorf begin??
he is sooo hot btw. im so sorry. he's so hot
nintendo was SO careful to cut out the zonai soldiers from the trailer footage...you'd never imagine it was from the distant past...i love how they all wear theee zonai clothes...i wish i could wear mine always
redeads WHEN btw
i thot that was the end of the cutscene but then HERE COMES RAURU........
YOU TOOK FOR GRANTED THE GODLIKE POWER YOU HAD IN YOUR HANDS..........girl thats literally the triforce. he made the TRIANGLE SYMBOL WITH HIS HANDS thats been zelda headcanon for sooo long
idk if it was anyone else's but it was mine. it was in my fanfic that i wrote when i was 14
"you tried to control me, rauru..." so i know nintendo would never give us good guy ganondorf but i am clinging to the scraps to build my own canon about it later. he sounds as though he was Wronged. im choosing to believe this
literally thot zelda was about to take a pic but she's just transporting them.........clever girl <3
but if rauru and sonia are both dead or about to die...surely they had a child who could go on to have children to eventually lead to zelda...so like is the baby human looking or. sorry this is just so wild to me. they literally didn't have to make him animal-like
ok i see a shrine nearby but then i am getting the HELL out of this tundra

Another thought hence why it's here and not on my fanfic based blog. Out of the Link Chain, Four is the only one who has a still living parent sorta in his life. I don't know if it's canon but I sorta headcanon Wind and his sister being adopted by Granny.
Considering we like having other Links, AU based or getting involved with the group... wonder how they react to another Link that has a very peculiar family. Like it's rare enough for an incarnation to have relatives in some shape or a peaceful childhood. Then there's the idea of taking this further when the members aren't what people used to. I'm not using the human term as mixed families whether it be by blood, through marriage or adoption, are a thing plus the various species that exist in LoZ.
An example I'll be using is Digimon inspired cause appearances vary a whole lot species wise. Good chunk being so monstrous that they really don't have be part of the Nightmare Soldiers classification (which is reserved for demons or demon adjacent) to scare someone shitless. Even temperament is another thing to be cautious of as some Digimon can be mellow while some will just maul ya on sight.
Why not up the pressure when this Link's parent is a Digimon with either a dangerous temperament, a demon lord that even the embodiments of the seven deadly sins or a living force of destruction. Some good examples being Lamortmon, GranDracmon, alongside Apocaylmon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lamortmon, a vicious berserker that won't stop until either their offender is dead or the one closest to them holds em back. An ancient demon lord that looms over the digital equivalent of Hell itself and lures angels to their downfall, GranDracmon. The living embodiment of the void, neither good or evil, and destruction bringer Apocaylmon.
Despite all this, a certain blonde child ends up happily in their care. Now take into consideration every adventure the members of the Chain been on. Very few had any positive or neutral experience with these type of people. Time, whose the defunct leader, isn't one of them. That means you have a powdered keg situation at hand.
First impressions aren't something that will go well especially if the Link in question is near said parent. The kind of sight that causes assumptions and when it comes to the Hylia's chosen... Those are dangerous if enacted.
Do you fault them for charging in? Not fully. Dawdling is tempting the balance between life or death situations for the group. None of them had the luxury to examine a scene fully without the worry that someone is going to die. Breaks can be rare at best to non-existent at worst.
Every single Link had the fate of the world placed on their shoulders without any major help. Hell, there were times where armed fighters just drop their current issues onto the Link of that time period. That ends up manifesting unhealthy trauma induced viewpoints which aren't addressed until they blow up.
Soon the harsh reality crashes when the Link they thought was in danger had been on a peaceful outing. That the heroes attacked someone who beared no threat to anyone. Want to break the camel's back even further?
Find out that the new Link in question bears power aligned to darkness. A power never wielded by the Goddess's Chosen unless it is cursed base. Light is always viewed positively in the LoZ series, Twilight being middle ground and darkness viewed as evil.
A mindset that has never been fully challenged nor explored upon. Especially when you look closer into the actions of the Sheikah and the Royal Family dark secrets. Just know that certain dungeons such as the OoT Shadow Temple to enemies like ReDeads, Darknuts, and the boss Bongo Bongo hold unsettling traces NOT connected to Ganon/Ganondorf in origin.
Even the Fierce Deity Mask is under suspicion as the detail for the item question asks 'Could the dark power inside be worse than Majora?' You can only imagine the potential disaster to occur when it isn't the case. The world isn't black or light. It's grey. Darkness can't exist without light and vice versa. Chaos will always be with order. Evil can be born of light as heroes can come from darkness.
The Chain will have to adjust, question what they know, and be forced to see that the paths they led could have gone differently. A thought to muse over when you place them in a situation like this.
