Transformers: Mosaic #534 - "Weight Of The World"

wada sez: A creation of Marvel UK writer Simon Furman, the Transformers’ god-creator Primus eventually appeared as a giant buried head in the main US series in issue #60, “Yesterday’s Heroes!”. On deviantART, Bove explained: “I figured if you were God (any god) and you couldn't intervene I just think it would be a horrible position to be in. To love your creation and know that you're losing them...” Ed Pirrie helpfully provided a list of every single character featured in this strip, including some obscured by captions—which I only spotted after googling every single Predacon to identify Razorclaw's sword and shoulder, go figure. Per Bove, the font used for the speech bubbles was “Resistance is Futile” from Comicraft. On his own deviantART, Pirrie would explain why he drew Jazz fighting Razorclaw: “I was recently annoyed by certain attitudes in the fandom berating Spotlight Jazz just because Razorclaw didn't kill him on the spot. What a load of bollocks. So this was a reaction to that.” See below for clean inks and colors, along with a sneak preview of tomorrow’s strip!

Dear Vector Prime,
How did Gnaw and Cindersaur become members of the Predacons and Terrorcons, respectively?
Dear Legends Leftover,
In the case of the former, it was more by accident than anything. Gnaw had been the leader of a team of Sharkticons sent into the depths of Cybertron to pull the large switch controlling the Exponential Null Generator. When that plan went awry, he ended up following Galvatron to the surface, and from there to Chaar, without being noticed.
When Galvatron finally stumbled across Gnaw (chewing on the base of his makeshift throne), the Decepticon leader threw him to the Predacons—declaring that since they were both spawn of the Quintessons, they should get along fine.
Razorclaw knew better than to argue with Galvatron when he was in one of his moods, and reluctantly accepted the Sharkticon. When the Predacons went on their hunts, they would toss the scraps to Gnaw, keeping him around as a living waste disposal machine.
Cindersaur, by contrast, was deliberately headhunted. Hun-Gurr had been keeping his watchful eyes on the Combiner Wars, and had seen the other combiner teams picking up new members to replace fallen ones or to increase their number. The Terrorcons' rivals, the Technobots, had acquired two new members even, which stirred envy in the Terrorcon leader. Still, Hun-Gurr was not about to recruit just anyone to join his squad; he wanted an outcast—someone whose loyalty would lie with him over any other Decepticon. He found the perfect bot with Cindersaur. The Firecons had recently broken up, and Cindersaur had found themself lost without their teammates... literally. They had gone on a rampage, ending up completely disoriented in Chaar’s wilderness. Their usual means of retracing their steps, by blazing a trail behind them, had completely failed them in a landscape where everything was already burned and blackened, and they'd been wandering in circles for months.
Hun-Gurr tracked them down, and offered Cindersaur a place in the Terrorcons. He had a quick recruitment form for Cindersaur to incinerate, and that was that! The other Terrorcons were hesitant at first, but they soon came around, after realizing that the smell of smoldering metal helped mask Blot’s stench.

razorclaw is conceptually one of the funniest TF characters to me. near genius-level intellect that he uses to do the least amount of work necessary. specifically likes to fight honorably because it's more fun for him. uses a big sword. kind of a general depending on your continuity. got kidnapped by a dragon once. also part of a combiner team (whose gestalt form is ALSO SMART and uses a BIG SWORD) with some of the rowdiest decepticons to ever hoot'n'holler they way off Cybertron. he has the biggest "fucker in charge of you fucking fucks" energy ever. Love that guy

wada sez: Get ready for a four-part Megatron-versus-Shockwave beatdown! I’m pretty sure this doesn’t fit into any existing continuity, and is instead a generic mishmash providing a backstory for the Classics Megatron toy, which notably had orange and purple highlights necessitated by American toy safety laws—here, they’re recontextualised as being leftover Galvatron parts. Megatron was driven mad (well, more mad) by Unicron, but here, the extensive damage to his body purges the worst of the planet eater’s influence. Unicron and Straxus appear tormenting Galvatron in the fourth panel; Straxus appeared solely in the Marvel comics (most notably in the expanded Marvel UK continuity where he was central to a bunch of silly complicated retcons surrounding Megatron) which also formed the basis of Fun Publications’ Classics stories, but the plot here simply can’t fit into the Marvel timeline at all. There’s some distinct movieverse vibes to Megatron’s endoskeleton, I’d say. I’ve included a preview and the higher-resolution versions of all the strip’s panels shared online; in the first one, it’s possible to identify a cameo for Armada Megatron in the background!

Transformers Universe 2003 - Decepticon Razorclaw - Function: Unicron’s Emissary - In a universe where the heroic Maximal, Tigerhawk, succumbed to the Vok influence and destroyed that realities Megatron, Unicron chose to select his fourth and final general. Devoid of compassion, dictated by logic, and possessed by evil, this once noble character uses his Vok-enhanced abilities to pillage neighboring star systems for the glory of his dark master. Totally fearless and ferocious in battle, Razorclaw is one enemy that you don't want to face alone. Has a particularly heated rivalry with Optimus Primal, his one time commander. Under times of great stress, Razorclaw’s unique binary-Spark combination of the lost Maximals, Tigatron and Airazor, is both a hindrance and weakness; confusing this powerhouse as the noble Maximal Sparks strive to re-exert their original personalities.

Note
Dear Vector Prime, Galvatron told us about a Mini-Con named Whirl who was unable to powerlink with Roadbuster. Was he telling the truth? If so, why was this the case?
Dear Powerlinx Perjury,
While in the Realm of the Primes, Galvatron had nothing to gain from deceit, and indeed he was correct about Whirl’s condition—though his words on the subject were as biased as ever.
Imbued with tremendous potential energy by their progenitor, Unicron, the Mini-Cons were designed to seek out and bond with larger Transformers—but this connection was realized through an element of physical hardware: the Powerlinx port. Rarely, this connector could be permanently damaged in battle, as was the case with Whirl.
But some of the most independently-minded Mini-Cons personally chose to render their port inoperable. There have been long-standing philosophical quandaries over self-determination and Powerlinxing, which were only complicated further by the revelations regarding the origin of the Mini-Cons. Is it truly their nature to be subservient to larger Transformers? Galvatron believed it to be so, and this was his justification—or at least, his rationalization—for his mistreatment and enslavement of their kind, and his professed view of Whirl.
In my view, the Mini-Cons’ connection to humanity gifted them with self-determination, the ability—and desire—to define themselves as individuals, not merely as conduits. They still form strong bonds with their partners and teammates (how Unicron must have hated to see them forge such useless friendships!), but they have their own unique preferences and personal goals. And for some Mini-Cons, the very thought of giving oneself over to another so completely is simply unconscionable: thus, this precommitment to independence, never to combine, never to be used as a weapon or servant. From the top of my head, just to name a few of the individuals in question: Menasor, Onslaught, Hot Zone, Blades, Hun-Gurrr, Razorclaw, Silverbolt, Air Raid, Skydive, Fireflight… many more I’m forgetting, I’m sure. Meanwhile there are some bots, such as Trypticon, who are often confused for Mini-Cons—when in fact, they are simply unusually-small Autobots or Decepticons! Or consider Dirge, and his diminutive clones, or- oh dear, I’m getting away from your question, aren’t I?
Well, what I have described to you is merely a gross generalization of the experiences of ‘bots in one particular reality. In some universes, the ability to Powerlinx was introduced to the Mini-Cons by the Decepticons’ abhorrent experiments, or gradually lost in the course of evolution, or otherwise complicated by any number of the vagaries and contradictions that define this bizarre miracle we call life.
