Red Farlow Mysteries #6
Nearing 70 but not slowing down, Red Farlow begins this pro bono murder investigation while in town for a summer camp’s administrative board meeting. Two male college students, counsellors for the summer, are missing when Red arrives. Having been a counsellor decades ago, he is soon on trails with the search team following paths he once tramped long ago. His memories of those long-gone days intertwine with the current case as it moves from missing to murdered young men and increases to multiple murders with a sinister serial killer on the loose.
What I liked:
* Red: retired Bureau of Georgia Bureau of Investigation, husband, private investigator, attended summer camp where some of the murders took place, puzzle solver, follows clues, has a network of friends in the area, tenacious, team player, motivated, loving husband, teen in the sixties
* Being able to relate to the summer camp counsellor reminiscences having been a camp counsellor in the sixties myself
* The myth of Boojum and how it tied into the story
* The close friendships that lasted decades – at least for red – and wondering why my time as a counsellor did not provide the same
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* Finding out the motivation for the multiple murders and the eventual solution of the cases
* The surprises, twists, and turns – and finding out new information as it came along
* The teamwork and effort exerted to bring down more than one evil person
* Catching up with Red and hearing a bit about his earlier years
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that there are people in the world as evil and amoral as the ones in this story
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

When he learns Unsworthy was released just before the counselors’ deaths, Red goes into the mountains. His trek requires sure-footedness over rocky terrain and old-growth forest as he explores caves with endless tunnels, shafts, and deep-water pools searching for his suspect.
But, did Unsworthy really murder these people, or should Red turn his attention to other suspects?
Red treads a treacherous path on his quest to find the killer and bring him to justice.

Over the next week we’ll be dropping news updates with details on upcoming changes to our programs, classes, schedule etc as we continue to move through our re-opening phases!
This phase was originally slated to begin a couple weeks earlier, but with the updates from Dr Bonnie Henry and the BC Government we decided to slow it down a bit to make sure we’re not the gym that spreads an outbreak (like the outbreak at a spin studio).
CLEANING & PROCEDURES REMINDER
One of the best things we can do to help keep COVID out is to do your self assessments & checks! If you’ve got a bit more of a cough or higher temperature than normal please do not come in! Period.
Also PLEASE remember to maintain social distancing when you’re at the gym. Also do not take it personally or get upset if someone (or a coach) asks you to take a couple of steps back. The orange marks on the floor are all 6′ apart - if the person you’re talking to isn’t already in ‘your bubble’ then chat with them from 6′ away :)

PHASE 3B CHANGES
CLASS SIZE
[FF] Group Classes will increase to 9 people per class.
There are currently 11 stations in the gym - some do not have access to everything so when coming in for a class please make sure to select a station that has everything you need for the class / workout
We’d like to get up to 10-12 - but currently we cannot do that without beginning to share weights or pull from shared piles - something we had originally planned to begin but with the state of COVID getting worse not better we’ve decided to hold-off on that change.
SCHEDULE UPDATES
Schedule changes all kick-in beginning in August! REMINDER: We’re closed for Sunday and a holiday schedule on Monday - which will include our first [FF] Open Gym blocks - rncty.ca/schedule

You still must reserve a block, stay in a square, and follow all COVID protocols!
Open gym blocks are 1:20
A coach will always be on hand to help but they will NOT run you through a structured warm-up etc
You must be able to tell the coach in advance of entering what you plan to do for your workout
We recommend ‘making up’ missed Raincity workouts BUT you have the freedom to do some additional skill work or other workouts you want to try
you MUST know in advance what you plan to do so the coach can help you select an appropriate square etc.
1 Shower is now open!
We will now allow use of the LARGE annex bathroom shower when needed!
Please only plan to utilize the shower if you MUST - if you have the option to shower at home etc. please utilize that
Our biggest concern in utilizing showers is creating a wait / cluster / clogging up bathrooms - so please be VERY QUICK!
If needed - we will create shower reservation blocks alongside classes to keep things flowing - for now please just get in and out as quickly as possible!
Remember to bring your own towel, and please wipe down anything you touch in the bathroom!
IN PROGRESS FOR NEXT PHASE
As things are constantly changing we don’t want to make any promises - but here’s a few of the changes we’re working to get up and running for the next phase (mid to late August or September)
PUPPIES - aka Raincity Petting Zoo (separated spaced cages to avoid people crowding and breaking social distancing due to excitement caused by @dogsofraincity
Increased class size - as mentioned above, we’d love to get 10-12 people per class. The major limiting factor at this point is equipment / weights so we’re working on a method to allow minimal sharing (no sharing during the workout - just shared stacks).
More classes - in the interim until we can add more people per class - we’re keeping a close eye on the schedule and classes filling up and will continue to add more blocks of classes or open gym to help alleviate this! We understand classes currently book full - but the addition of an extra day and open gym blocks should help alleviate that for now :)

Red Farlow Mysteries #3
Red Farlow is working for free in this case. Why? His friend leaves a quick rather abrupt message that has Red worried so off her heads to Tram’s house only to find him near death. After listening to Tram’s dying words Red knows that he must find the person who killed his friend. With that goal in mind he calls in a group of people that he feels will be helpful in finding the killer and the story unfolds. The story includes an ex-wife, multiple lovers, a motorcycle gang, drug dealers, a seedy dishonest businessman, a few crazy people, and a whole lot more. The book is filled with twists and turns, sleuthing, relationships and an interesting cast of characters.
What I liked:
* Red: a good man, loyal husband, dedicated private investigator and loyal friend. He is more than capable of staying on the scent to get the baddie.
* The newshounds helping Red: interesting people with leads and sources that help locate information while also locating leads for stories they will publish
* Red’s wife: didn’t see much of her but she seems to balance Red well
* The twists and turns in the story and not knowing who the killer was till nearly the end
* That those that might be considered good or bad were never 100% one or the other
* The location, writing and story
* That the story was complete without a cliffhanger
* Looking forward to another book in the series soon
What I didn’t like:
* The ease with which some take the lives of others
* Being reminded of how seedy and difficult the lives of some people are
* Knowing it might be awhile before another book in this series is ready for me to read
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

2021 #RaincityGlobo Programming Cycle
As part of our continued effort to keep our clients as fit & safe as possible we’ll be committing to a continued ‘individual access’ schedule for the first 2 months of 2021.
One of the major risks to group classes is multiple athletes completing the same workout at the same time. Though many gyms have shifted to an ‘open gym’ style program - by only providing one workout of the day to their clients, they are not alleviating the issue - and if anything making it worse (by not having more coach direction / assistance).
Multiple Programming Streams Available
We will be providing multiple programming streams that clients can choose to follow for the next 8 week cycle!
We encourage you to NOT always complete that days programmed workout - instead select the primary lifts you need to work on and do your best to complete those pieces every week!
We will make 5 days of programming visible in advance via SugarWOD - don’t hesitate to ask the coach for help or message us in slack when checking in advance!

[FF] Strength & Conditioning Program
Primary strength lifts: Deadlift, Push Press / Jerk, Front Squats
Strength details: Volume accumulation focus - this means you’ll be doing an increased volume in those lifts at moderate to heavy weights. Starting with 6x5s at moderate loads, and decreasing the number of sets while increasing the weight week to week.
Conditioning details: We’ll be returning to a similar format focusing on 8-16 minute conditioning pieces. Please make sure to follow all updated protocols & guidelines for completing increased respiration work during individual access.
[OLY] Olympic Lifting Programming
Cycle details: If you’re looking to improve your olympic lifts one of the most important things is consistency! This is a 3 day / week program we encourage you to follow a minimum of Day 1 & 2 consistently! These days would pair nicely with 1-3 days / week of the [FF] program as well :)
Day 1: Snatch & Back Squat
Day 2: Clean & Push Jerk / Split Jerk
Day 3: Accessory lifts for Snatch & CJ
[PTG] WODSQUAD Program
This is a 3 day / week program that I (Thor) have been writing for a crew of my buddies (PTG = private training group). In the interest of spreading out what clients utilize / have access to I will be making this stream available to all [FF] memberships a well. Note: This program is written specifically for my 8-10 clients following - so adjustments may be made on a week to week basis.
Day 1: PUSH - focusing on single leg / arm
Day 2: PULL - slow tempo deadlifts & upper body pulling
Day 3: COMBO - Dumbbell complexes for upper / lower body
[RAAH] Raincity At Home
We will be continuing to offer 7 days a week of on demand workout videos provided by NCFIT! You can even join Coach Thor for a ‘Coach Workout’ throughout the week (check schedule - they may move around) where he’ll choose a days workout & follow along with the video!
