I wanted to fill the gap in my cultural upbringing and finally read the Icewind Dale trilogy. Honestly, I was quite bored, so I entertained myself with silly doodles.
(the excerpt on the first doodle roughly translates as "[Wulfgar] thrust his battlehammer behind the belt and went after the dwarf")
(the excerpt on the last doodle roughly translates as "Entreri ran out into the street and spread his legs, ready to meet Drizzt")

Ése era el peligro de la nostalgia, comprendió el drow. Recordar las cosas buenas del pasado y olvidar las malas.

I’m starting Book XIII tonight. I’ve finished 12 books in 6 months — that’s like 144 hours of audiobooks, give or take. You can imagine that I’ve been vibing with the narrator, Victor Bevine. His voice has reeled me in with suspense, lulled me to sleep, made me chuckle. I love him and I’m glad he’s been contracted so the series has consistency.
But. Road Of The Patriarch is only three books away…
Tumblr media
Obviously my main man Victor wasn’t available, and I’m dreading it
Listen to the difference:
(big spoiler if you haven’t read Book X: Passage To Dawn)
It is SO JARRING. David Colacci might be a perfectly fine narrator in his own right but I wanna BARF.
At least Victor has done all the others so if I can just hold out for those 13 hours I can get back to cozy listening.

Vector Prime - R. A. Salvatore
Star Wars: The New Jedi Order book 1
Reread: Oct 2023
This is the first book of what I would consider the last era of the Star Wars EU. They moved to a more long form story arc with many books and away from the stand-alones and duologies or trilogies that characterized the landscape of the 1990s Star Wars books. They also moved to a more in universe chronology progression for the book releases. Not always the case of course, but for the most part.
Of course this is the start of the most famous of the Star Wars EU/Legends series: The New Jedi Order. It really set the tone for everything that came after. NJO really made a mark on Star Wars books. And this is the kick off for NJO.
This book was written to be a potential stand-alone. I know that the whole series was planned and plotted before this book came out. But the way Salvatore wrote this one was giving very "if it flops and we cant do more at least this will be a complete story." And it really was. Really the only NJO book that I would consider being able to be alone and still make sense.
Onto the book itself. They really kicked it off with a bang. Lots of new characters, bringing the Solo kids into the main body of the EU, whole new species of villain to introduce, fragmenting New Republic politics to set in place, major character death to hammer fans with. I heard somewhere that they (Skywalker Ranch??) got a tonne of hate mail for killing off Chewbacca. It was sad but also set the tone and the stakes. The new baddies were not going to be fucking around.
NJO as a whole moves from the Outer Rim in towards the Core in setting, so this one is very Outer Rim indeed. One of the planets is basically about to fall out if the galaxy. Kind of fun to start in the wild west of Star Wars, where the navy is not coming to save the day you have to pull together and do it yourself. A job tailored for the main heroes obviously. Lots of work by the usual suspects here, but also new comers as well: Kyp, Danni, Jacen, Jaina, Anakin. Of course Luke still gets top billing, he just starts leaning into that powerful Jedi Master thing, and I really love it. This is also where I fully fell in love with Mara Jade Skywalker, her one on one fight scene with Yomin Carr paints such a good picture. So like I said it starts the series off well, with a bang! Literally since they explode a planet at the end haha.
Info: Del Rey; 1999

More and more I wish Earthsea had got the adaptation it deserved. An adaptation that loved and valued the incredible power of these books. An adaptation that captured the heart of Earthsea, it's gentle, stern atmosphere, it's passion and it's fire. And most importantly, an adaptation NOT JUST FULL OF WHITE PEOPLE. It's insulting.
Nowadays, fantasy adaptations are so key to bringing a fanbase and attention to older works. So this is my plea - read them! They're such incredible works of fiction, with POC mains and queer characters. If you're a fan of LOTR or WOT this is your jam. If you like Brandon Sanderson or James Islington, give it a go.
If they've passed you by, or you've never got round to reading them, this is your sign.
READ EARTHSEA

Do u think what Kelly Donovan did to Tyler counts as SA
he was 17 and very drunk and she was a grown woman
I’ve seen people say it doenst count though like huh
Tyler being disliked in the fandom ties into how they feel on what happens to him. Kelly Donovan was the adult in the situation and 100% took advantage. Tyler is the same age as her children to really put it in perspective. She should’ve refused and controlled the situation. She is an adult, there is no excuses.
People say it doesn’t count because Tyler consented to it. Tyler’s a male, she’s an older woman so it should be seen as “sexy.” Sexual assault isn’t taken very seriously by the TVDU fandom because TVDU never wants to call it as it is. They rather sweep it under the rug.
Marcel and Rebekah are another example of when the woman needed to set boundaries versus taking advantage of the male. It’s Rebekah though and no one wants to call her a groomer but she looks like one when Marcel met her as a child and has had feelings for her since then. In none of Marbekah scenes with child!Marcel does Rebekah ever refuse Marcel’s advances. Katherine assaulted Stefan but that is glossed over.
Women are just as capable of being sexual predators.

Let's talk about Tyler Lockwood. The guy is a TOTAL smash (Ik how that sounds but am I wrong?) and with a little bit of delusion his fanfics could be awesome. I need some x readers. Pretty please if anyone wants to write that ;)

“Drizzt had always suspected it, but now it was confirmed, that “welcome” was his favorite word in the Common Tongue, and a word, he understood, with no equivalent in the language of the drow.”
