How the Dracula Stage Play Influenced Future Adaptations

So I wanted to let people know about the stage adaptation of Dracula, because it established a lot of tropes that have come to define the novel as well as vampire fiction in general, despite the fact that large changes were made when bringing the book to the stage. Sometimes, honestly, it seems like more adaptations pull from the play than the book. Okay:

The original stage adaptation of Dracula was written in 1897 by Stoker himself! Here you can see the manuscript in his own hand:

Apparently he hated how it turned out, because he called it “dreadful” and it was performed only once and then never again. The role of Mina was played by Edith Craig, a well-known figure in the suffragist movement and the daughter of Ellen Terry, Stoker's friend, whom he mentions in the book. The next attempt at adapting the novel would not be until the 1920s, after Stoker had died.

The 1924 adaptation by Hamilton Deane stays fairly close to the events of the novel. Some key points:

The entirety of the action takes place in the Harkers' house

Mina and Jonathan are already married

Dracula is already in England, and the storyline involving Jonathan as a prisoner of the Count has been omitted

To accommodate the female members of his theater troupe, Quincy is now a woman! Her name is still Quincy, and she is described as “feisty,” and is a close friend of Jonathan and Mina. (There don’t seem to be any photos from the 1924 play, sadly.)

It is in this first major adaptation that the idea of the Count as suave and debonair is brought into existence. This change is to allow Dracula to interact more easily onstage with the other characters, whereas in the book he stays an offscreen threat for large amounts of time. This is also the first instance of Dracula wearing a high-collared pointy cape, which was originally done to hide the actor better whenever Dracula had to “disappear” through trapdoors.

The play was a success, and quickly moved to Broadway:

This version, adapted by John Balderston, was a complete revision not just from the book but from the 1924 stage play, and a LOT of changes were made:

Quincy, Arthur, and MINA have been removed from the story. Mina is mentioned as having died mysteriously before the play takes place.

Jonathan’s relationship to Dracula has been completely removed. He is not involved with bringing the Count to England at all. He is also now wealthy, and has traveled Europe extensively, where he has heard folktales about vampires.

Lucy is now engaged to Jonathan, and her last name is now Lucy Seward. This is because……..

John Seward has been aged up and is now Lucy’s father.

The action takes place at Seward’s house/asylum.

Renfield is allowed to just sort of…wander around Seward’s house when the plot requires him to be there. He gets dragged away by attendants whenever he needs to be offstage. He also survives.

The Broadway version also made large changes in characterization:

Lucy is weak and feeble when we meet her in the play. She is helplessly preyed upon by Dracula, and yet is sexually tempted by him when under a trance. She and Dracula share a passionate kiss at the end of Act II, right before she willingly exposes her neck for him to bite.

Jonathan is still concerned for Lucy as she is slowly turned, but he is more wary of her and goes along willingly with Van Helsing’s ideas regardless of how Lucy feels.

Renfield is portrayed as actively malicious, through fearful and subservient to the Count.

Seward is seen as a strong-willed father who leads his asylum with a firm and confident hand. He believes Van Helsing more readily when confronted with the existence of vampires.

Dracula himself is once again depicted as charming and suave, and he spends time during the first act as a mysterious but pleasant dinner guest of the Sewards.

Despite these massive revisions, the Broadway version was a hit, partially to due the charisma of Bela Lugosi, who originated the role. (Below is Bela Lugosi as Dracula along with Seward, Van Helsing, Jonathan Harker, and Renfield on the floor:)

Bela Lugosi, of course would go on to star in the 1931 film adaptation. Other famous stage Draculas include Jeremy Brett and Frank Langella (Langella's revival would also give us this amazing Edward Gorey art:)

So we can see that the stage plays influenced many versions that would later come, as well as the idea of vampires in pop culture at large. It’s interesting how the motifs and themes we expect when we hear the word “Dracula” were actually the creation of people besides the author, and these differences don't seem to have been majorly disputed in the last 100 years. Has this happened with other classic novels? I'm not sure, but I'd love to see an accurate adaptation of Dracula in stage or film form, and see how it might influence filmmakers and directors for the future.

Well, then - LOL. As I just said: I am very glad that these pics irritated the shit out of Mordor, of course. The collective idiocy of the Other Side is blatant and of course, belittling the adversary - the worst possible strategy.

But remember (hahahahaha), darling: double standard is a paramount policy of the Best Fans and the Only Ones, FWIW. They feel they have a license to do just about everything: repost things when reality bites and people begin to realize maybe things are not just as black and white (but rather more than fifty shades of grey, LOL). Insult people who dared question their honesty and/or intentions, with a ferocity that says a lot about their unsavory mob. And also play the ostrich, when people come to them with info like this very recent one:

Sure, Jan, wherever you'd live (a 500 people village, somewhere, I suppose). Because social and business dinners happen on Saturday nights, since the dawn of humanity (where is McIdiot, on that Saturday night, since it's all so social/business? rehearsing Smooth Operator with Blonde Bambino?). And yes, of course, 'pictures or it did not happen' (it did happen before, btw, albeit with chaperones, but never with the multi-millionaire, successful music producer!), on that we agree, and it's rare - this round's on me. That being said, it's priceless to read (and almost hear) those banshee shrieks: 'They are not romantically involved!!!!!!!!!!!!' I spat my Coke, again and remembered this wonderful Terry Pratchett quote:

'Multiple exclamation marks,' he went on, shaking his head, 'are a sure sign of a diseased mind.'

So, as you can see, that rally cry was also very, very far away from being efficient. As Cambronne famously said at Waterloo: merde!

One last thing and please try and not hate me for it, since I might have misunderstood what you really meant: there was no editing, as far as I know, of that interview BIF reposted. That name was always there, but once more, never uttered by C and just added for context by the journalist, when she wrote her paper. See for yourself:

Reading that last phrase tells the whole story: 'finding time that suits both their schedules is also proving challenging'. ROFLMAO. For Christ's sake, the 'intensely private' one ain't no Quincy Jones! And this is how you just know Tatler sugarcoated a very bland, unenthusiastic interview. A very common practice.

Clark Terry was most famous for bebop and swing on Trumpet and Flugelhorn. As a composer, he helped bring the Flugelhorn to mainstream Jazz. During the 1960's, he played with numerous musicians--including Duke Ellington and Quincy Jones.

Here There Be Dragons

I was thinking about dragons, and while a SHOCKING number of my dragony books are still in tubs in my Dad's basement in Alaska, I do have a few dragony books on my shelves at the moment and I wanted to share them, who their dragons are, and why I love them.

A Natural History of Dragons follows Isabella Camehurst (the future Lady Isabella Trent) as she works to build the field of draconic studies. The dragons here skew more animalistic than intelligent, but they're very cool, and the exploration of both the natural history of dragons and Isabella absolutely obliterating pseudo-Victorian gender roles in the name of science is extremely fun.

Heart of Stone features the draconic mob boss Janx, who fully has all the energy of "class clown who grew up to use his powers for evil" and simultaneously is himself a dragon. Between his phenomenal chemistry with Margrit and his on-again off-again tempestuous relationship with Daisani, Janx is never not fun.

Guards! Guards! features the absolutely darling Errol, who frankly is a miracle of nature and everyone's sad panda dragon. I get very Tad Cooper vibes from Errol, and between him and the great dragon summoned to eat Lady Sybil, the dragon shenanagins in this book are a solid 10/10. But then, it's Terry Pratchett, what else would we expect?

Ok, full disclosure: Calling on Dragons is the third book in the Dealings with Dragons quartet, but my copies of the first, second, and fourth books are in Alaska, so we are sneaking this one in. This particular book is lighter on the actual dragons than the first book, but Kazul just going full on Quincy P. Morris on a group of wizards never gets old, and Wrede's voice is, quite simply, incomparable.

Last but never, ever least (Naomi Novik has never written a bad book in her life and the JEALOUSY and ADMIRATION I feel are intense) is His Majsesty's Dragon. Temeraire, baby, you keep doing you and dragging Lawrence to the light side because you might be young and inexperienced but you're RIGHT. And just utterly charming. Not to mention the fact that his entire formation are a treat--I would hug on Maximus forever, we really need more gentle giant himbo dragons in the word (Maximus disagrees when he meets Kulingile, but we're just going to ignore that).

Project Windchill: WIP intro (Updated)

Project Windchill is the project title of an ongoing multichapter duology. Here's what you need to know!

This is the journey of Jeremy Elden - a young, previously-normal college student - to bring down the systems that oppress his newfound friends (and himself). He wasn't aware that he would belong to a community that wasn't even supposed to exist.

In the face of adversity and oppression from the powers in place, Jeremy must learn to control the new power burning through him - almost literally - as he grows to accept that the authorities in his life had no idea how to prepare him for something like this. How could they when they didn't even know a situation like this was possible? Now, he is relearning everything about the world from friends and mentors - both new and old.

Can he live up to being their chosen one? Can he be the foretold savior? Or will he crumble under the pressure? Will he fail the people he has grown to care for?

Everyone knows there are 12 months in a full year. 365.25 days to the Earth's rotation. But what if that's only part of a much bigger picture? In this world, there are 15 months, but only 5% of the world's population seems to be aware. The other 95% are sleeping away, controlled by the global powers through means that are artificial intelligence nature. Forced into a deep sleep, these people lose three months of their year to an uncontested war.

Supporting Cast

David Marino (22) - A young man with a strange fascination - Jeremy. What started as hero worship becomes quiet endearment as he comes to realize that Jeremy is nothing more than a human disaster.

Quincy Jackson (23) - A human lie detector. They are also Jeremy's best friend, having met him in college. Jeremy never would have suspected that his friend would be expecting him to save the world.

Terry Jackson (27) - The brute force powerhouse of the Rebellion and Quincy's buffer, hotter older brother. He is the "body" to Quincy's "soul", the two being nearly inseparable despite the age difference.

Antagonists

Beelzebub (19) - A master tactician. Despite his young age, he commands the Extermination Task Force of the United States government. Though, that isn't as interesting as him being a mutant himself.

Samael (18) - A boy that burns with the fury of angels. He knows how to kill quickly and silently, just as any avenging angel should. Not that he enjoys so much death. It's a shame that he doesn't have much of a choice.

The creation of Wonderwall Music, a series marking the 55th anniversary of the recording sessions - parts 1 & 2:

Wonderwall Music sessions in England included the Remo Four...

The Remo Four’s original song “In The First Place” was recorded during those sessions, and produced by George. Unearthed in 1998, you can hear the song as a bonus track on the 2014 remaster of Wonderwall Music:

“Harrison agreed to release the song [In The First Place] commercially and add it to the director’s new cut of the film. The ex-Beatle requests only to be credited as the song’s producer. Remo Four will be credited as the performer.” - CMJ New Music Report, June 7, 1999

Kit’s Quick LEPacy: The Plumbobs

Generations 1-3

Grant Plumbob was plopped down in Sunset Valley with one dream: becoming Leader of the Free World. And he succeeded! He surely wouldn’t have without his doting wife, Agnes Crumplebottom, who opened her heart and her home to him. There he was able to hold the greatest fundraising parties Sunset Valley has ever seen (seriously.... he would make campaign bank on those parties, like $50,000 a party). They had three children who were mostly raised by Agnes hiring a babysitter: Lizzie and twins Hamilton and Quincy.

When their father passed, the children took the family fortune and moved to Riverview. Lizzie found love and her calling as a forensic specialist which is why she’s not pictured. Hamilton, on the other hand, knew he was destined for greatness... As a Martial Arts Master. He successfully completed his aspiration a few days into adulthood, and married Shen Su.

Quincy’s heart belonged to adventure. A non-committal sim, she held a variety of jobs over her lifetime but mostly she followed her mother’s footsteps and wrote novels... Really trashy, smutty literature to fund her escapades. Her lifetime goal of becoming a Seasoned Traveler was full of tomb raiding, running errands, convincing sims to sign petitions, and losing priceless artifacts like Pangu’s Axe (no idea where it went... devastated about it tbh). She had two daughters with trysts on her adventures--Layla and Jia.

Layla’s path to achieving her dreams has been a little more zig-zaggy. When the family moved to Twinbrook, she moved away from her mom and sis to try the Ghost Hunter... which has made it hard to concentrate on her Descendant of Da Vinci LTW. We made it to level 8 as a Ghost Hunter before retiring to ~art~ full-time, as she and her husband Terry got bit by the baby bug. As of right now, they both rolled a want for a 3rd child, and she’s mastered the Sculpting and Painting skills [and is working on Inventing now. A lot of the time she just sets herself on fire though]. I have full confidence she will complete her LTW before she’s an Elder.... I hope.... because I want to activate Late Night and figure out which kid will carry on the family name!

Dracula: The Play and Its Legacy

While we’re waiting for the Final Updates leading into the Final Battle, I wanted to let people know about the stage adaptation of Dracula, because it established a lot of tropes that are still in use among adaptations of the material today. Sometimes, honestly, it seems like more adaptations pull from the play than the book. Okay, so:

The original adaptation of Dracula for the stage was written in 1897 by Stoker himself! Here you can see the manuscript in his own hand:

Apparently he hated how it turned out, because he called it “dreadful” and it was performed only once and then never again. Interestingly, the role of Mina was played by Edith Craig, a well-known figure in the suffragist movement and the daughter of Ellen Terry, whom Stoker mentions in the book. The next attempt at adapting the novel would not be until the 1920s, after Stoker had died.

The 1924 adaptation by Hamilton Deane stays fairly close to the events of the novel, though the plot has been streamlined and the entirety of the action takes place in the Harkers’ house. Mina and Jonathan are already married, Dracula is already in England, and the storyline involving Jonathan as a prisoner of the Count has been omitted. To accommodate the female members of his theater troupe, Deane changes Quincy from male to female. Her name is still Quincy, and she is described as “feisty,” and is a close friend of Jonathan and Mina. (There don’t seem to be any photos from the 1924 play, sadly.)

It is in this first major adaptation that the idea of the Count as suave and debonair is brought into existence. Deane made this change to allow Dracula to interact more easily onstage with the other characters, whereas in the book he stays an offscreen threat for large amounts of time. Deane also created the image of Dracula wearing a high-collared pointy cape, which was originally done to hide the actor better whenever Dracula had to “disappear” through trapdoors.

The play was a success, which meant that there was inevitably a version produced for Broadway.

This version, adapted by John Balderston, was a complete revision not just from the book but from the 1924 stage play. Here is a summary of the changes:

Quincy, Arthur, and MINA have been removed from the story. Mina is mentioned as having died mysteriously before the play takes place.

Lucy is now engaged to Jonathan, and her last name is now Lucy Seward. This is because........

John Seward has been aged up and is now Lucy’s father.

The action takes place at Seward’s house/asylum.

Renfield is allowed to just sort of...wander around Seward’s house when the plot requires him to be there. He gets dragged away by attendants whenever he needs to be offstage. He also survives.

The Broadway version also made large changes in characterization:

Jonathan is still concerned for Lucy as she is slowly turned, but he is more wary of her and goes along willingly with Van Helsing’s ideas regardless of how Lucy feels.

Renfield is portrayed as actively malicious, through fearful and subservient to the Count.

Seward believes in Van Helsing more readily, and is seen as a strong-willed father who leads his asylum with a firm and confident hand.

Despite these massive revisions, the Broadway adaptation was a hit, partially due to the charisma of Bela Lugosi, who originated the role on Broadway. (Here is Bela Lugosi as Dracula along with Seward, Van Helsing, Jonathan, and Renfield on the floor:)

Bela Lugosi, of course, would go on to star in the 1931 film adaptation. Other famous stage Draculas include Jeremy Brett and Frank Langella, the latter of whom would star in the 1979 film version of the Broadway play. (Langella’s revival would also give us this amazing Edward Gorey art that I have to share:)

So we can see that the stage plays influenced many versions that would later come, as well as the idea of Count Dracula in pop culture at large. It’s kind of like playing Whisper Down the Lane, where motifs and themes we expect when we hear the word “Dracula” were actually the creation of people who came after the literal death of the author.

Personally, MY favorite adaptation was the one my school staged, with acclaimed, ovation-worthy moments such as:

The mechanical bat not working and flying into the scene when Dracula was onstage

My Jonathan (I was Lucy), 14 and a full foot shorter than me, forgetting he was supposed to tenderly wake me up after I faint and instead yanking me by my arm off the couch and dragging me to the floor

Renfield jumping back in surprise when he sees Dracula and accidentally banging his head on the fireplace, making Seward laugh out loud

Dracula getting mad at both of them in the dressing room afterward and telling them they were ruining the play’s atmosphere

((Note: This drabble will have heavy grammar mistakes and errors but this was written for fun. I hope you understand but also enjoy please.))

The sound of running footsteps was heard in the hallway, showing some locked doors and rooms but it seems one of the prisoners was making a run for it. Sai a.k.a The Phantom Slasher was trying to make an escape out of this prison. He was with his cell mate Rust Knight but got separated in the confusion.

He stops to look left and right but he makes a right turn running faster. The reason he was running is due to the warden following him. Terry McGinnis was on his tail trying to keep up with him as he chases him through this building.

"Damn it, Halt!!" He heard the warden's voice as Sai clicks his tongue but quickly looks to jump over some desks that was there and keeps running down the stairs away from him. He was always chasing him no matter how many times he tried escaping. He did get out a few times but he always got caught by the same one.

"You know, if your that determined to catch me, do better! At this rate, I'll end up escaping again!" Sai taunts but seeing Terry only made him make a sharp turn running again as Terry growls giving chase. He was quick he'll give him that but he wouldn't stop till he caught him. He sees it was a trapped hallway but Sai saw Terry rushing behind him only to dodge as he crashes against the wall.

Sai looks at him but he smirked seeing this. "What's wrong? Your losing your touch there? I thought you would be so much smarter than this....or maybe not?" he teased only to go and run off again leaving Terry there. Now to find a exit out of here. Terry gets up to see the sneaky snake rush off but he didn't chase him? He only sees him turning to the right through a door but a smile shows on the warden's lips.

Seems like he walked into one of his traps. Now it seems the little punishment game can begin. He goes to follow him as he gets through to close the door but locks it with a key to follow the snake down the hallway. Sai did keep on running but he looks to see their was other doors in this hallway. How strange; their was so many but one of these had to lead to a way out right?

"Hmmmmmm..." He begins looking at the doors testing them but most was locked or some bolted shut. Damn, seems this was not going to work. The sneaky snake prisoner was still checking the doors getting the same results but he did remember his items including his weapon, Karma was around here or in the warden's hidden vault. If he can get through to that room he can get out of here!

Sai kept on checking the doors after a while before getting to the last one and to his shock, it was unlocked? He looks confused but he keeps on his guard to slowly open the door and take a look inside, his yellow eyes widen seeing it was a vault office room and to say the least he was more shocked seeing a locked up box inside. Maybe that's where his things were? He looks behind seeing Terry isn't behind him but goes inside to quickly close the door and looks trying to find a way out. He did see their was another door behind the main desk, some files, a key set, some chairs, a lounge chair at least. A mirror, pictures and...A window!

Yes! He might have found a way out! He rushes over to try opening it but looks seeing metal bars attached. Damn it, seems the warden was smarter than he looks. He tries to keep looking around being careful. He did look to wonder about the second door. Maybe it can lead to somewhere? He goes to start working on opening the door but as he did, he steps on something to hear a click.

"!!!" Sai tries to move but he falls down a trap door as he was going down to a hidden room under this floor. He falls down but as he did, he lands on something soft?

"????" He opens his eyes to look, seeing it was a chair as he look seeing another office? hissing annoyed, he begins to get up but someone grabs his shoulders to force him down as he winces.

"Finally got ya you sneaky snake." That familiar voice! He looks to see but he saw the Warden!? He was holding him down but he begins thrashing as he was forced up on his knees with Terry holding him from behind.

"How the hell did you-"

"Lets just say being a warden helps you get some idea of your own prison. You think this was a normal prison? It does have special traps where a prison goes in, they don't get out unless we let them out. And it seems you fell for one of mine." He chuckled but Sai growls thrashing again but Sai gets him down to lay on the couch.

"Let go of me!" he hissed as warning but Terry keeps him down while he was seeing how aggressive he was.

"Now now, you don't have to be so angry. I'll just be taking you back to your cell as I usually do." He said holding him down that he heard Sai laughing finding it funny.

"Really? Even if I slip past you so many times?" he teased.

"And me catching you right after.." Terry said.

"Only because I let you. I'm not that easy to tame you know. I'm just a bratty person so what do you think will happen? What could you do to stop me? Give me a long lecture or what? You'll spank me?" he jokes laughing at him but Terry tightens his hold on his wrists as Sai winces from his grip to Terry look at him.

"You really think you can get away with this even if your a brat?" He said but Sai looks to him being silent. He glares at the warden to only chuckle deeply.

"I don't see you doing anything to stop me." He chuckled to his hair covering his eyes as he chuckled, looking in his direction. "So Warden? What are you gonna do?" he teased.

".........Tch, you seriously need a punishment then....." That's when he suddenly moves to get him on his knees but he looks down while gripping his shirt. This damn guy was a tease and yet...Terry always found it amusing that someone like Sai was willing to be a tease. Sai looks quiet but he only shifts his head that one eye looks to him and the other hidden. His smile still showed the smirk.

"What? Did I upset the warden already? Your used to my teasing and insults by now. I thought you would hold back from that punishment you-Mffm!" his words were cut short when feeling Terry suddenly kiss him on the lips. He didn't move from the feeling but he shook to feel the kiss break as a thin trail of saliva connects before breaking.

"Lets get one thing straight here. Your a damn tease you know that? But..since you wanna be a brat..I'll just have to punish you like one." He said but Sai chuckled to look at him.

"As if you could. Again, what are you gonna do? Hmm?" he teased but Terry said nothing only to look at him.

"Trust me, you'll know." he warned the snake who was curious.

Terry was quiet while looking down at the prisoner, lifting one hand to bring it down smacking Sai's ass. He sees the sneaky snake hiss from the sting but that's not the only reason. "Oh no, were not done yet. I said I was going to punish you...and I'm planning on doing that." he said now thrusting again as Sai cries out drooling again. His mind was hazy now but he couldn't stop moaning while he was being taken.

"Ahhhhhhh ahhhhh p..please...please...." He begs but Terry panted still slamming into him.

He will keep his word on what he said; he was going to punish him and that's what he was going to do. Seems the snake was beaten so it seems only one more prisoner remains.

Theophilus D Packard: the anti-slavery crusader

Pamphlet for meeting opposing annexation of Texas in Boston.

Theophilus D Packard, as his Find A Grave entry notes (which I wrote), was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts on March 4, 1769 to Abel Packard and Esther Porter, and had three siblings. By February 25, 1800 he would marry a woman named Mary Terrill in Abington, Massachusetts and they would have five children: Theophilus (1802), Isaac (b. 1804), Louisa (b. 1808), Laura (b. 1815), and Jane (b. 1817). He would live in Shelburne, Massachusetts until his death, serving as a Christian minister, going to Princeton, Amherst, was a member of the Franklin County Anti-Slavery Society (FCAS), formed on December 1836, and helped Mary Lyon establish the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Beyond that bio, and his death in September 1855 at age 86, he would be involved in four anti-slavery petitions to the US Congress.

As the nation continued to debate the topic of enslaved Blacks, Theophilus came out on the side of justice. On September 18, 1837, he joined "other congregational ministers of the Franklin Association" in Franklin County, Massachusetts, to protest against the "annexation of Texas to the Union of these States." Nine days later he (or perhaps his son of the same name who seemed to be against slavery as well) signed onto another petition. Again he petitioned on behalf of the Franklin Association of Ministers, supporting "the abolition of slavery, or of slavery and the slave trade, in the District of Columbia, or in the District of Columbia and the Territories of the United States." Two days later, John Quincy Adams, then a representative of Massachusetts who strongly disapproved of "the expansion of slavery..[and] the annexation of Texas and the war with Mexico," specifically

presented sundry petitions and memorials of inhabitants of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, praying that the resolution of the House of Representatives of the 18th of January last, requiring all petitions, memorials, and papers, relating in any way to slavery, to be laid upon the table, may be rescinded

One of those petitions was from "...Theophilus Packard and 13 other citizens."

Theophilus wasn't done. With fifty other citizens of MA, on January 12, 1846, he petitioned "against the admission of Texas as a slave State into the Union."

In order to understand Theophilus's stand, lets give some historical background.

In 1836, Texas had declared independence from Mexico because they felt the Mexican government had "ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people" of their region, cited "atrocities" by the Mexican state on those in the region including siding with indigenous peoples, declaring that "the necessity of self-preservation, therefore, now decrees our eternal political separation." But there was more than this. When they talked about "property," they meant enslaved Blacks. Article 5 of the 1836 Treaty of Velasco between Mexico and Texas made this clear:

That all private property including cattle, horses, negro slaves or indentured persons of whatever denomination, that may have been captured by any portion of the mexican army or may have taken refuge in the said army since the commencement of the late invasion, shall be restored to the Commander of the Texian army, or to such other persons as may be appointed by the Government of Texas to receive them.

From 1836 until 1845, Texas continued as an independent slaveholding republic. By 1845, as the Texas State Library and Archives Commission argued, the joint resolution passed by Congress, "that admitted Texas to the Union provided that Texas could be divided into as many as five states." [1] James Polk, then the President, supported the measure, saying it was "the peaceful acquisition of a territory once her own." Furthermore, as the US State Department, all of all places, says in their write-up on the topic, there were economic motives at play:

...Texas was a producer of cotton. It was also dependent upon slave labor to produce its cotton. The question of whether or not the United States should annex Texas came at a time of increased tensions between the Northern and Southern states...over the legality and morality of slavery... there was another issue raised by the Texas-cotton nexus: that of the market for raw cotton. One of the largest export markets for North American raw cotton...was to Great Britain. As long as Texas remained an independent state, it could give Southern U.S. cotton plantation owners competition in terms of setting prices

The Texas government accepted the terms proposed by the US Congress, the latter which allowed Texas to be a "slave state," giving it two representatives in the US House of Representatives. In later years, Southerners wanted to "exercise the provision to create another slave state from Texas to balance the admission of California as a free state" but this was rendered moot with the end of the Civil War. Beyond that, Texas would later be given $10 million to pay off its debt to Mexico, along with the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act, all as part of the Compromise of 1850. While the nation stayed united, it didn't stay that way for long, as the Civil War from 1861 to 1865 tore the nation apart, with over 600,000 people dying overall in one of the most bloody conflicts in US history. Texas, in its declaration of succession defended its slaveholding, declaring that abolitionism was one of the causes for joining the Confederacy, which fundamentally was (and should always be seen as) a pro-slavery racist force:

...the non-slave-holding States...demand the abolition of negro slavery throughout the confederacy, the recognition of political equality between the white and negro races...For years past this abolition organization has been actively sowing the seeds of discord through the Union, and has rendered the federal congress the arena for spreading firebrands and hatred between the slave-holding and non-slave-holding States...We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior...the servitude of the African race...is mutually beneficial to both bond and free.

Theophilus, although there is no record he went to the southern part of the US, was among the "firebrands" that Texas detested for reasons as mentioned above. For this, he should be celebrated by any rational individual. He was, by any definition, an anti-slavery crusader, a fighter for justice, to say the least. It is hard to say what political party he was sympathetic toward, but undoubtedly sided with those at the time who opposed slavery.
