Hi @rainbowrowell I was wondering, why Simon had any reason to like the Mage? You have expanded on flawed and complicated characters like Fiona and Malcolm that they still loved and cared for Baz so even at their worst Bazs affection is justified. But what did the Mage ever do to gain affection from Simon? Even the Mages who were on his side seemed to do it for political reasons and Agatha says Simon was probably the only one who liked him, but what was Simon's reasons? What justification did Davy give him?
Wait wait wait, what the hell was The Mage's plan if Simon had been adopted before he Went Off at age eleven??
Like was he just gonna show up to some Normal's (recently burnt down) house like "hello, I'm a strange man from a strange boarding school you've never heard of, I'd like to take your Ordinary Normal son because uhhhh, he's super smart and I know this, somehow"
What if Simon's parents had said he couldn't go to Watford?? What then?? Was Davy gonna kidnap him? And then what?? You can't put a kidnapped kid back in a care home for the summer, you'd get caught
This Wednesday feels like a Friday! Also, it's quiet, also it's my first post in ages, thanks to everyone who tagged me in the past...month? God it's been forever. I hope everyone is enjoying all the COC content and the second to last day of this year before the return of the light! I moved into my new house last Tuesday and it's still a huge mess, but my brain decided that not writing was no longer an option yesterday, so I've got some Simon's Two Mums words for y'all. Simon POV,
"Headmaster, I hardly think…"
"Zip it," The Mage says to Ms Possibelf with a sharp gesture and her voice stops as though her lips have stuck together. "Simon."
I follow. It's as though I've been tied to him with a string. It's sticky and itchy and the roaring isn't enticing anymore, with every step I take it's more and more terrifying.
We're out on the lawn, and there she is: red and gold scales, sparkling eyes, smoke floating out of the corners of her mouth. She's majestic. I hold my hand out to her and The Mage slaps it down.
"She's not a pet. Attack stance."
I spread my feet wider, take my wand out and hold it across my body.
She's enormous and beautiful and prowling towards us.
I don't want to hurt her.
"Try a bombardment spell," The Mage says. He doesn't even have his wand out. He's standing a little bit behind me.
My heart stutters in my throat, every bit of rage and hurt swelling up and rushing through me like fire.
I drop my wand hand.
"No."
"Simon," his voice is hard like stone. I hold my hand out toward the dragon. "She's not a pet. Use a bombardment spell. For Crowley's sake."
Instead I say, "I'm not going to hurt you." It's a whisper, but it comes out like a spell, heavy and echoing in my head. The dragon looks at me. "No one's going to hurt you."
Tagging in everyone!! Happy Solstice eve! The Mage steps closer to me, like he’s stepping close to an animal. “You’ve come just in time,” he says softly. He lifts his hand and touches my face. I feel blood trickle down my cheek.

“I’m sorry,” Simon says again. “I didn’t know.”
She smooths his hair back, sopping it. “Shhookay,” she burbles. “You put it back. And morrre.”
