Can always tell when I’m selling rocks to a Steven universe fan because they pronounce sugilite wrong

#it’s SOO- JUH - LITE not SOO- GUH - LITE #in su they say soo-guh-lite and it bothers me #Steven universe is alright but my biggest critique is clearly no research was done for the rocks at all considering at least 2 have their #names pronounced wrong #(peridot and sugilite)#(peridot is a little grey because technically a western pronunciation COULD be pear-ee-daht but it’s a French word and the original #pronounciation is pear-eh-DOH)#what also bothers me is in Steven universe future there is a larimar gem and larimar is really cool except 1. the gem persona looks nothing #like larimar. and 2. larimar is from the Dominican replublic and forms in VOLCANOS and in the show larimar has ICE powers. which is probably #just because it’s blue. when they could have literally had the blue character with fire powers and a fun call to larimar a origins #but whatever. WHATEVER.#also it annoys me how there’s just a ‘jasper’ when jasper is such a broad category and there’s a million fuckin types of jasper. that’s like #having a character who is just ‘quartz’

Pink Pearl: SOLD

Always thought of as a simple minded pearl who honestly to many outsiders never thought she was that great at being a quiet and follow you from behind type. Yet never seemed to be reprimanded much from Zebra Agate whom she was entrusted to. Currently she's thriving in this new Era 3 and on earth in Empire City. She was the one among this group to actually start the whole animal pattern print...kind of. Though technically it could be argued the pattern started with Zebra Agate but Pink Pearl conciously chose leopard print from seeing them on models in store window advertismenet and could not be more interested. On Homeworld theres very little patterns, only really lattice work or stripes of any kind or diamond checkerboard. No one really thought out- no one thought to look to organic beasts for fashion. Humans are so fascinating. Maybe thats what that Rose Quartz truly saw in them. How creative and vibrant they are. Comes with a past form too on toyhouse

Design Notes on Grey and Pink Pearl: Inspired first by Pink pearl's interest in 'animal pattern' which Grey is a pearl who excelled at being 'a pearl' sure she was never the most emotive, sing song-y type of pearl for entertainment yet what Zebra Agate needed was a pearl more of a secretary of keeping things on schedule and taking calls and what not. I also decided for this story a conscious effort that Pearls don't wear patterns. They're not of importance they are here to be simple, more softer colors typically and just to show they're a pearl. not some combination of gem type wearing another gems pattern. Also decided the same of course for Pink pearl for them being simple, run of the mill pearls even if Grey has a bit more to her past design it was only for the more authoritative feel that a pearl might have being under an *Agate* that terrifies Design notes on Pink lace: Due to corruption she is a lot more faded- not just from corruption but because her gem was more like that of the sand gem. Embedded in an object and only ever facing the sun. bleaching her gem of colors with too much exposure. She's a lot more polished in her currently look- i had a design ready for her just out of corruption look but then that would leave Zebra agate without a past form and decided to let the two non pearls without past forms. She of course used to be much more vibrant.

Design Notes on Zebra Agate: purposefully the inverse of typical zebra pattern on her clothes. with white stripes on black you can see that her hair itself is a regular part of black stripes on white like a typical zebra. also her design on her bodysuit is specifically to mimic a ribcage with zebra stripes

Zebra Agate: [Sold] "An Agate Terrifies" That's what Agates do. That's who Agates are. Subjugate those out of line and whip them into shape. They're here to make everyone stay in their proper places and follow rules. However I took her to completely go into the other direction of dealing with rules. The Punk movement appealing to her- if this is Era 3 and there is no need for her job role. Why should she keep trying to force a terrifying agate lifestyle? She may not be the kindest or most sweet Zebra Agate is however sentimental and more thoughtful than many- even pink lace considered her much more cold and rigid to expectations of what used to be common of gem society. While shes not an anarchist she has been delving into punk fashion but also the subculture to help her adjust to her new world and its views. She had always needed to follow rules blind and enforce them but due to the new order change. How else was she to find something that even acknlowedges no structure is perfect and many are flawed- even so her diamonds were flawed. Nothings perfect and nothing is without work to adjust.

Grey Pearl: SOLD A muted personality. What do you do when you used to know everything you were supposed to do? Living not in just a new era but an entire new world where you're allowed a lot more freedom that you never actually craved before. She's known Pink Pearl for thousands upon thousands of years and while there are some feelings of envy she would consider Pink Pearl to be her only friend. It's a complex mix of emotions like anyone would have especially towards Zebra Agate and the peculiar softness she seems to have for Pink Pearl that she has with no one else. Whilst never treated harshless it always was more of a cold wall from Zebra Agate that Grey Pearl felt. That this was strictly business relationship. Agate never even asked her to sing or dance- two components that make a pearl a pearl in many's eyes. Yet she's asked Pink Pearl to sing for her, and never stopped her from dancing without being asked. Grey Pearl may not have much of a relationship with Faded Pink Lace however she almost projects a sense of kinship of feelings left behind with her. In fact it was after Pink Lace Agate came back with those curated corruption spots that she decided to have some own markings herself. Humans have tattoos and while she can't get a traditional tattoo from humans she herself worked to get those marks on herself. She was the last one in the group to reform to this new Human lifestyle. Comes with a past form too on toyhouse

(Faded) Pink Lace: SOLD During the gem war she of course fought for homeworld and even was was part of the last charge. Of course, while she is more of the carefree type even she could see the dangers. Zebra was part of the task to pull out more of the aristocrats and Pink Lace part of the ground troops. Anything could happen so just as a precaution she sent her pearl away to Zebra Agate. Honestly, she expected that terrifying Agate to reset Pink Pearl for herself. It was a peculiar feeling for Pink Lace recognizing her pearl- even if it took only a moment before her Pearl recognized her. All so unevenly spotted and with sharp spiked growths coming out of her. She was a mess...Just how Zebra Agate used to scold her about. Her pearl still so lively and a bit oblivious to others feelings but even now so creative- such unique spots on her dress...theyre not even diamond shaped. Pink Lace at least knows to go with the flow of things but a good deal perceptive.

funny story, i asked owen what gem he thought he would be and he said sapphire which. y'know. is blue. but i didn't want to just ignore what he said AND THEN I REMEMBERED PADPARADSCHA!!! so take a little lie detector with retrocognition! also, his dress is loosely based on the one he wore in tommy's video that one time.

beks is a quartz because of COURSE she's a quartz, she can beat the life out of anyone. she finds the fact that some of her scars blend in with her natural markings to be a bit funny. she has glasses irl, so i figured she'd get a cool visor to help with eyesight! she's a little short for a quartz- like amethyst, she was a bit overcooked. but she's still just as strong as any other!

for eloise, i always thought of jades as the sort of...administrative...paperwork-doing...manager type gems? and it reminded me of r!eloise! also, she just gives jade vibes idk what to tell you. i'd like to think that at a point before el decided to stay on earth, her dress tore and she didn't bother to fix it because...nobody was going to shout at her for not doing so. and then when she decided to permanently stay she changed her whole outfit.

in my head the trio were sent to earth upon realising that the gems over there were not, in fact, shattered, and were just deserting the empire. eloise works interrogation and writes reports, owen can literally tell if anyone is lying, and beks is security detail for these two fairly important gems...along with playing the bad cop if need be. owen and scott recognise each other. owen is too stubborn to join earth. scott is too stubborn to go back to homeworld. eloise decides to stay after a while. beks is just trying to do her job. shenanigans ensue.

How It is Created: Tiger’s Eye is basically a quartz but they formed in such an unusual way that the fibers of the mineral called crocidolite are laid down in parallel bands within the structure. This creates its silk like appearance and its “cat’s eye”.

History: Tombs in the ancient city of Ur in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) dating back to 2500 BCE have yielded gold sets with agates, like tiger’s eye and carnelian. The tiger’s eye was very popular due to the belief that it harnessed the power of the earth and the sun. Blacked out. when I woke up this was on my computer. I swear there's a legitimate thought process behind the choices here. (which i'll list under the readmore so i don't drown you in my paragraphs)

I haven't thought about how the logistics of the game story would work or anything. But. I'm sure ill think of something/do sketches of them at some point.

(Design fun facts below)

Huggy Wuggy and Kissy Missy are quartzes (amethyst and rose quartz respectively) bc they came off to me as normal soldiers. In my mind the mini wuggies are rubies. They were also the hardest to design bc there is Nothing in SU that looks remotely like the wuggies so it just looks like OC quartzes. It's fine im fine.

Mommy Long Legs was the first one I drew and the one that inspired me to do the whole crew because I saw long legged pink woman and thought of spinel. Easy. Her gem is also on her lower torso bc she only dies when that part of her is crushed in-game.

Catnap is a pearl, and so are the rest of the smiling critters. It's the subservience catnap has towards the prototype AND the fact that there's a lot of them ("thousands of pearls being flaunted about on homeworld"). Also something something Canon Pearl being able to control sand/fog = catnap controlling the red smoke.

Poppy is an off color aquamarine. She was going to be a sapphire to make her important enough to keep in a case before i figured her body type matched the aquamarines better.

Miss Delight is a cracked Yellow Agate. Agates are the closest SU comes to having a "gem teacher" since Holly Blue fills the role of like... a boarding school matron?

The Prototype is a cluster whose base is a diamond. It takes shattered gems and fuses them to itself. Under the black glove is a hand that looks a bit like the canon cluster.

Character sheets take longer than I thought (I'm drawing on my phone without a stylus help me)

I am absolutely TERRIBLE at drawing guys body types so I had to stare at reference photos for like ever and I chose discus athletes as my frame of reference. It's better than my usual work but still not perfect so I'm glad I don't have to do scar/tattoo maps for all of the characters.

very common headcanon I know but I imagine all the the Ro'meaves are tall with Garroth being around 6"7-6"8. HOWEVER he and his brothers inherited their height from Zianna not Garte. With Zianna being around 7ft and Garte being around 5"11 (Which is still tall but like he's the shortest so he WOULD make everyone sit for family portraits)

I'm getting rid of the cross on Garroth's design and replacing it with a star symbol, maybe something to symbolize Irene's power or something. The "gem" in the center is actually dyed quartz as it's customary for head guard to place a false gem of glass or a cheap gemstone to mimic the look of the Jury of Nine. Guards are gifted slightly higher quality stone or hunks of metal if they are on the waitlist for the Jury as well.

I know we make fun of the fact he never changed his name but there was a period in where like 20 percent of the English population was named Mary so he can keep his name unlike Aph.

I'm basing O'khasis on specifically on places like Wales, Ireland, England and France so maybe expect some later design elements from there.

His cape is "faerie silk", which is one of the few exports from the Yggdrasill forest region and is known for its durability. It's one of the few items Zoey always keeps in stock because after the incident with Zenix, Garroth incorporated it into Phoenix Drop's guard uniform.

I keep running into problems with ages because Diaries is just inconsistent like that but I THINK 24 is a good enough age??? I'd explain but that's a whole ass post about the Ro'Meaves that isn't set in stone until I figure out how evil I'm making Zane and reworking how the lord system works.

His armor was originally way too fancy for Phoenix drop but I imagine that it fell into disrepair after the lord dies. Aphelia and Laurance get his armor fixed up for him for his birthday one year before everything goes downhill.

The scar on his face is because Zenix swung a giant-ass blade at his face and I refuse to believe he walked away from that fight unharmed physically

I know it's hard to see BUT HE HAS STUBBLE. He always attempts to grow a full beard but after like 2 weeks it gets too itchy and he just goes back to the stubble.

if you're still here pls send in a request for the last character sheet for now because Laurance has like 5 outfits and I don't want to draw all of themmmmmmmmm help.

A: Yes, Blue Diamond wasn’t hiding her true identity, and Blue Pearl and Greg have no reason to hide it from her.

A: No, Amber isn’t corrupted. She’s an experimental Gem type made unconventionally, so she looks a bit different.

A: Yes.

A: No, in my AU her gem grows with her basically. It's my fanon interpretation of a similar thing but in reverse with Malachite from the show having Jasper's gem, but it scales to fit her size.

not to bother you or anything but how did you choose the gems for the gemstuck (+ the gemcyt cause yk it applies to that also obvs) designs? and like, the fusions and stuff? :?

I think I answered this a while back (I just checked my archive trying to find the ask but can't so maybe not?)

But either way! So, yeah!

So for baseline characters (non-fusions) I try to stick to canon gem choices as much as possible. This is a self-imposed restriction I give to myself because to me, it makes the characters feel more "canon" to what the show is. I have more references to base designs off of, rather than trying to completely conceptualize new gem types (there's a few exceptions to that, Nepeta is a Cat's Eye which doesn't exist and BigB is a Blue Quartz, which also isn't a variant ever seen in the show).

As far as fusions, I tend to just look up gemstones that have the colors of both (or more) components and try to go from there. Ametrine is purple and yellow and while Scar is more pink than purple, it felt fitting for a Willy Wonka-inspired character to be an Ametrine so I could lean more into purples and dark magentas with Ametrine's color palette. Other times, it's more based on the vibes that a fusion will give off. Impulse and Bdubs are a Sunstone because I feel like that's a perfect fit of their personality, even if the design leans much more into Impulse's color palette than Bdubs'.

For fusions of 3+ gems, I try to focus on bigger concepts as that's usually what those fusions are. It's less about how the individual components mash together, and more what their collective motivation/purpose/personality is. For Rainbow Obsidian, I wanted to do something similar to Obsidian from the show but make it clearly Dogswoods-inspired, so it's a giant wolf/puppy. Boatem (Celestine) is also another more "concept"-based megafusion that takes inspiration from the Boatem builds (specifically Mumbo's temple).

I think one of the best things you can do with fusion design is focus on the core vibe of the new character your creating. Yes, fusion is technically two gems mashed together, but they're also their own person. I think when you start to give yourself the space to be more flexible with the design, you will end up making better gem fusions.

self indulgent little pearl gil. pil. gearl. once i figure out a design for lud its so over.

lud's some type of higher rank quartz in the gem war & the idea is that gil is lud's pearl-turned-bodyguard who takes his task of keeping lud safe so far that he simply poofs him before a quasi suicide mission battle, runs off and keeps him from regenerating for centuries. either waiting it out on a different planet or ship or staying and being hit with the corruption beam eventually. :3
