Did a tiny book bind along for Binderary this year and that was fun! (Shout out to @simply-sithel for hosting, I had a blast!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I decided to go even tinier with the leftover scraps and make earrings! (They were very fiddly, there was much swearing, but they are very cute and I love wearing them.) I think I used the flat plastic end of my glue brush more than the actual brush for applying glue to these...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cover paper of all the tinies was marbled by me! The first tiny book was about 2" tall, and the earrings were all of 1/2".

Once upon a time, as a wee child, I dreamed of writing a book and getting it published, of seeing it on shelves and hearing of people's reactions and excitement for what I wrote.
One fanfiction in particular is near and dear to my heart, so when I got it into my head to bind one of my own fics, there was really only one clear choice: Green Sarabhas.
Tumblr media
The first big decision was whether I'd do the series in four volumes or in one. Because I was making two copies, I opted for one volume because I really didn't want to make 8. 😅 The typesetting was a pain in the neck and the table of contents is four pages long, but we survived.
Tumblr media
Shout out to @purplephloxpress for hosting me for a weekend and spending about twelve hours at their dining room table with me, lending me tools I didn't have and helping me troubleshoot such a large undertaking. 🥰 I still need to get one of these punching tools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the first bind where I used book cloth, and it was a dream. I don't know if you can tell in the picture, but the book is sewn with four different colors of thread, one for each section of the fic. I contemplated doing four different colors in the end band too, but that was a step too far for me for this one. 😅
Tumblr media
squiiiiiiiiiiish
Tumblr media
I bought my own foil quill after playing with phlox's, so I did Claude, Sylvain, and Felix's Crests on the cover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, here's the part I'm arguably most proud of and that made me cry for many different reasons: the dust jacket. I designed it in Canva, complete with end flap summaries and comments from the fics on the back, and printed it on poster board. I had to set my printer and computer to print a custom size paper and print on the non-glossy side of the poster board, but after much trial and error we got there. And when I say I cried, I am not kidding.
This fic was a labor of love, this bind is a piece of my soul, and I gave half of it to @astaraxion because we became friends due to this fic, so be sure to take care of it. 😉 I look forward to losing it together over the revisions and art that I did!

It's August 21, which means: Happy Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day! If you are a writer of fanfic, please know just how appreciated you are!! Fandom would be such a different space without your creativity and labors of love. 💜
In celebration of this most glorious holiday, @renegadepublishing ran an event where we bind copies of fics to gift to their authors, and I had the joy of binding The Tranquility of Water for @noppoh! It's a truly fantastic post-canon story and I love the exploration into the effects of the main story on its characters after the fact. (This is a story I love so much that I wrote up a page and a half crash course on The Untamed so I can try to force my sibling into reading it as well. Take that as you will)
The walls of the Hanshi creep in on him and so Lan Xichen leaves. He leaves Cloud Recesses and his seclusion, stealing away in the night with no-one the wiser that he even left. His feet bring him to Lotus Pier where a surprisingly kind Jiang Cheng seems determined to help him heal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With a title like "Tranquility of Water" and the story largely taking place at Lotus Pier, I may have been a little heavy handed with the lotus imagery throughout the book, but it felt very fitting! The lotus on the cover was a last minute addition, but one that turned out so lovely. Just, you know, to tie everything together lotus-wise. (Another one of my favorite design details in the typeset is that both title fonts from the chapter headers and title page get repeated within the text of the story as the main characters handwriting fonts!)
I started the physical binding process of my copy while at the Renegade Retreat in April (and decided the week before that I wanted to change my body font... can you say formatting speedrun?) and up until that point I hadn't actually figured out what the cover and endpages were going to look like. Special thanks to everyone who contributed pieces to this binding (and who moral-supported me along the way -- my copy holds so many fun memories now) because it LITERALLY would not look like this without you all. I really love the way the color transitions worked out, with a predominantly blue/green case, fading into green, into pink, into the title page, and then transitioning back out at the end of the book.
And these endbands!! Friends, that is SILK embroidery floss that a friend brought to the retreat especially so I could experience the decadence of silk endbands. I will never be the same. (They're so smooth... so shiny... so slippery to work with, but SO WORTH IT)
(Binding details under the cut)
The pieces that went into this bind:
Fandom: The Untamed/Mo Dao Zu Shi
Pairing: Jiang Cheng | Jiang Wanyin / Lan Huan | Lan Xichen
Bookcloth: Renegade Retreat Swap Table Special (I have no idea what it is, but it was just enough to make a copy for myself and the author and the color worked PERFECTLY!)
Cover paper: Opal Momi paper
Cover paper: Opal Momi paper
Endpapers: from the Craft Consortium Ink Drops - Dusk paper pack
Titling: foil quill
Endbands: leather cording core, silk embroidery floss for the bands
Body font: EB Garamond
Title fonts: Wintersoul and Bastian
Handwriting fonts: Bastian (Lan Xichen), Richardson Script (Lan Wangji), and Wintersoul (Jiang Cheng)
Tumblr insists on eating and doubling text in this section at its own whim, so if there's something missing that you're curious about, feel free to DM me an ask!

总有一天 a place to hide (can't find one near) - yiqie
That’s just the thing, isn’t it? Wei Ying feels nothing. He doesn’t feel anything, and this emptiness should scare him. He knows he should be scared. He wants to be scared. He isn’t. Fear itself is never scary; fear is just a response. It means that your body wants you alive. It’s the absence of terror that scares him.
I had SO MUCH FUN with this bind! This one had a lot of firsts for me, and is one that I really poured my heart into due to its particular emotional impact on me (tl;dr - I was a piano major in college, burned out, this fic helped me fall in love with music again). It's an Untamed WangXian Pianists AU (TW for anyone interested that it deals with attempted suicide and life following that) and I tried to tie that into the design details literally everywhere I could think of. Black and white cover paper, music note scene breaks, and my absolute favorite part to create: sheet music title pages. The particular song used for that is a recurring motif in the fic and one that means a lot to me personally, and I knew I wanted to include it somehow. Unfortunately I couldn't find an existing image of the sheet music that was high enough quality to use how I wanted, so I used a sheet music program to input it myself!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book was my first time doing any sort of edge decoration, and I had fun figuring out how to splatter paint with a toothbrush (Spouse: is that supposed to be blood? Me: no but also... kind of?) and it was also my first time doing endbands! (Shout out to the friends who walked me through it over voice chat one evening, and then rolled their eyes when I announced that I'd torn them out and done them over again. Twice.) I went with red and black for both of those parts to match the main characters canonical color scheme, and also because I liked the dramatic pop of color against the black and white cover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spine titling was done once again with a foil quill, and I decided to paint the Chinese title of the fic on the cover. I couldn't find a paintbrush that let me get as fine tipped and detailed as I wanted so I may or may not have used a toothpick to paint it on.
I prevailed over: somehow deleted half of my page numbers and had to reprint the WHOLE THING! Forgot to measure the boards as part of my spine width and had to do surgery with 2mm strips of paper! (Thankfully had allowed plenty of hinge because I didn't realize until I'd finished ALL of the titling and I would have cried if I couldn't salvage it) Truly this is my child and I adore how it turned out. Is it perfect? No. Are there things I would change? Sure. But I learned and I did and I'm so goddamn proud of it!

It's coming together! This is the typeset where I've probably gone the most feral (and yes I'm aware that I input sheet music by hand for another project) and it's also the first time I'm using cream paper instead of white! It's going to be so pretty!

Celestial themed journal I made as a gift for a friend! Somewhat rushed so I could deliver it to them in time, but proof that I can actually make a book within the span of a week if I don't constantly procrastinate my least favorite steps! Definitely some things I wish had turned out better, but I'm overall very happy with it. And it's a book, and that's what matters!!! (My friend has received the journal and insisted they can never write in it ever, to which I say: fill it up and then I'll have a good excuse to make you another one!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Extra special to me because I picked out the cover paper, book cloth, and end pages when I bought my first batch of bookbinding supplies, and then never made a test journal out of them. So I'm very excited that I finally got to use them, and for such a lovely project!
Tumblr media
While the casing in part may not have gone the smoothest, I am THRILLED at how well the endbands turned out! They're so smooth, and using an extra thread exclusively as a second core (instead of just the additional colors in the band) turned out really nicely. Each time I do an endband it gets easier and I'm excited to try some more intricate designs!

Price of a Soul: A Guardian Collection - by Sylvandreams
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I kind of kicked off my bookbinding by just. Making so many anthologies. These two Guardian fics by @elvencantation explore just how far Shen Wei would go to save Zhao Yunlan, and I pulled the anthology title from both summaries.
Frozen in Jade - Ever since they’d come back from that horrible mission, Kunlun has been… different. Shen Wei shouldn’t expect a god to confide in him, but-- there is something about Kunlun and how he treats Shen Wei differently than other people. -or- What price did Kunlun pay to save Shen Wei's life?
The Lonely Road that Brings Me Home - Shen Wei feels a stabbing pain in his chest. There’s so much noise, everything is moving, and it hurts to breathe. It hurts to breathe. It hurts to breathe. How is he breathing? -or- Zhao Yunlan sells his soul to the Hallows to bring Shen Wei back.
This was my first quarto binding and it's such a cute small size! Learned things about making quartos that I'll change next time, but I'm super happy with how it turned out! I went for a tree theme again with the title pages and chapter headers (I don't keep choosing fics because they feature trees, promise, it just keeps happening) and I picked cover papers based on the vibes of the parent material. Black, blue, and purple with lots of gold accents just felt right.
I had a lot of fun creating this one, not only because I love the fics (they're very good please check them out!), but also because @elvencantation has become a good fandom friend (I found her on Ao3 and tumblr separately, and didn't realize she had written one of my favorite fics in the fandom until she reposted a link to it MONTHS later, and I said 'wait a minute...') and it was a joy to be able to turn her lovely stories into a physical book!

This Is How (You Haunt Me) - and other ghost stories by Pyrria
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This anthology is a collection of four haunted MingCheng fics - Forgive Me (Save Me), Come Back To Me, This Is How (You Haunt Me), and Good Bones - all written by Pyrria (@pyrriawrites over on twitter), and I kind of just committed to a forest vibe for all the designs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were lots of letters in the various fics, and I enjoyed picking out handwriting fonts for everyone, but I definitely had the most fun making chapter headers for Haunt Me, designing signs based on aspects of each chapter.
(more design details can be found under the cut, if that's your thing)

God of Arepo my beloved 💜
My first book is officially bound! (I actually finished it in early November but I forgot to post it) Pamphlet bind with cereal box cover and too-thin cover paper that wrinkled (oops I've learned my lesson) but I'm really happy with how it turned out! Especially for a first book! Definitely a good learning process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you've never read God of Arepo, you should check it out! It's a lovely story based on a writing prompt that was group written by several users, and then turned into a graphic novel by another. (Another artist did a graphic novel recently and it's also quite lovely, tho not included in this particular binding)

Worked on some fics instead of just notebooks today, which brings me to 6 textblocks sewn so far for binderary! Somehow the one where I was using the last of a spool of thread was NOT the time I almost ran out of thread on the very last signature. What is my life.
Had a sad sad time realizing after printing an entire 260 page fic that I had accidentally deleted half the page numbers (honestly I would've preferred to have just deleted them entirely at that point) but now I have lots of misprints for glue paper? (thankfully it's only 65 sheets of paper but still) Problem has been fixed and I'll get it reprinted later this week. Could I have made it work? Sure. But this is the fic that I input sheet music by hand for the title pages so. Nah. We'll reprint it. I don't have the cover paper or end pages I want for this one yet, so it won't hurt me to wait a few more days.
ON THAT NOTE if you don't want to be encouraged to make every single possible purchase of fun paper or cloth that you come across, the Renegade server is NOT the place to be. Totally completely unrelatedly I have a huge stash of cool paper coming in the mail later this week. Totally unrelated to that first fact. Promise.

Final binderary2023 tally: 7 books!
3 notebooks, 3 fic bindings, 1 author copy
4 quartos, 3 half letter
4 hard covers, 2 soft covers, 1 pamphlet
2 fandoms, 7 fics, 78,908 words
While I didn’t quite manage two books a week (though I came close!) my goal was ultimately just to get something cased in, which I achieved! Four times! I conquered measuring/math challenges (I cut. So many things wrong. Because I couldn’t do simple addition or kept misreading my ruler. Oh boy.) and made these lovely books! I had so much fun participating in workshops, trying new things, hanging out in craft chats, seeing what others created, and pushing myself to take the final step and make something tangible! A huge shout out to everyone in the @renegadepublishing discord who made sure everything ran smoothly, it's been a fantastic month and I'm excited to see where this will push me next! (Hopefully, putting titles on all these naked spines...)

Finally took these little guys out of the press and sewed my pamphlet bind of Pyrria's "Music for a Melancholy Soul"! I'm also binding an anthology of some of her other MingCheng fics, but I've reread this one so many times I decided it needed to be printed and join my collection all on its own

Decided to finally tackle building a case today! Had to do entirely too much interacting with numbers for comfort (and managed to keep counting wrong!) but I did successfully figure out board measurements, bookcloth for spines, and cut cover paper! I also practiced spine designs with my new paint pens and apparently I can only write in a straight line if I'm holding the paper at an angle. I do not understand how this works. In addition to miscounting my measurements entirely too many times, I also mismeasured the spine stiffener for my two smaller books so I'm going to have to rebuild those cases, but I got a lot done!

February is Binderary for the @renegadepublishing friends! Some people are trying to do a full 28 books (one per day) in the month, other people are just trying out new techniques, and since I'm new to bookbinding, my goal is honestly just to finally case something in and see what else happens! (If you're interested in what other people are getting up to this month, check the binderary2023 tag!)
Last week, I wasn't able to get anything printed, so I folded, sewed, and glued spines for two little blank notebooks for my niece and nephew, and I got to try out the lying press that my dad made for me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I was able to get a few fics printed, so I got a couple of those folded, and sewed another blank notebook! Nothing cased in yet, but I'm definitely getting closer!!
