Furby Prototypes - March 2023

Hello Furby Friends! So as Some of you may know, there has been another round of furby “Prototypes' ' on ebay! And as usual! I'll be doing a breakdown of the listings and furbs.

Foreward: These prototypes are kind of interesting! As they line up nearly exactly with the 2000 Tokyo Toy Show, and the seller has nib and production runs of all the other furbys shown there. (minus ofc the rockstar furby)

What makes this even more interesting is the fact that these are marked as “salesmen samples” or SMS, in the toy industry these are final designs that are produced to attempt to get pre-orders or intent orders from trade shows, or to present directly to retailers as options to carry in their stores.

Now as you may or may not know, there are 2 different kinds of special editions, their are store exclusives, these are typically non holiday releases and come in normal furby boxes and have either normal furby tags, or a special paper tag, (ex: racing furby, jester, hawaiian) and were only carried in a single store. The other kind are usually based around holidays, and come in custom boxes and are typically carried in multiple stores. I think this is important to note, as these prototypes were most likely not meant to be store exclusives. 

Ok! So with that let's get into the furbys:

Thanksgiving furby

First one we have is the thanksgiving furby, this was also debuted at the tokyo toy fair as well! And this is the 2nd confirmed prototype known to exist, but in my opinion there are at least 3. 

This one differs from the one previously known, manly in eye color BUT this one also has an external power source cord which were typically used to power the furby at toy fairs or when on display however the wires are cut, indicating that it was used for that originally but then used as a sms. EDIT: Interesting that it lacks reset button? but has power wires 

Snowman furby

This also debuted at the tokyo toy fair as well! And is the 2nd confirmed one to exist.

This one is much less refined, the scarf is hand painted and the hat is a production run santa hat. The base furby appears the same as a snowball, but has a mane instead of a tuft/tail, black feet and coal buttons and lacks electronics totally.

Uncle Sam (4th of july)

This also debuted at the tokyo toy fair as well! And is the 3rd confirmed one to exist. one having the power cord, as previously mentioned but this one lacks it, making me believe that it is a SMS solely. 

This one is less refined, the hat is hand painted and is missing an eyelash.

Afterword!

As of writing this post, these furbys have not been sold, I will update with more posts as/IF more is documented. Again, thank you for reading this far! it means the world. I sadly, will not be bidding on any of these as I already have a few prototypes and I am not in the position to get more at the momment! But Im happy to document.

It’s My Little Monday With... Proto-peek at the Shimmering Beauties!  It’s basically just a peek because this low resolution photo is all I have of it / seems to be all anyone has of it. You can spot some interesting things right away, the most obvoius being that Stardazzle is a completely different color for her symbol, body and hair but... Did you notice her pose seems to be different too? That stepping foot in the front is on the ground in the final edition. She, of course, turned out to be bright orange with heartthrob-pink hair (not this dark color), the symbol is blue, and instead of ringlets she had a mass of curls. Dream Gleamer & Crystalline stayed the same color as seen here, though Crystalline may have had some green added to her blue. Even through this low resolution (you can barely read their names) you can still see that the symbols are unchanged except the angle at which they’re printed. The other difference is that Stardazzle did come with the (rare) yellow star pick, but the other 2 got flutter pony floral picks instead of brushes.  Why was Stardazzle changed to orange? The purple would have been absolutely gorgeous in their glossy, glittering plastic. (Many things ended up orange with them that shouldn’t have, because they kept trying to do red or pink sparkle things and they’d get orange instead: See the sparkle baby ponies, glow n shows etc.) Prototype pages like this would be printed in toy catalogs when they wanted to let companies know “What’s coming soon”, but they didn’t actually have the final items yet. If the resolution was better, you could read the catalog name in the corner. I LOVE Dream Beauties. They are horses but their stylization is so pretty. They are a perfect mixture. They’re so elegant, and the glitter/clear is amazing on these molds. I so wish they would have made more of them. Everyone should be able to know about and collect DBs!

I'm watching Tericho's latest theory video and it got me thinking about the Prototype's true intention towards the player, and maybe why he killed Catnap.

Neither Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Leg nor Catnap attacked us right away. They lurked around. Well Mommy was more directly present. But all three starts off not being a danger. I guess Catnap putting us in the trash compactor was dangerous but seeing how he loves to play cat and mouse and can immediatly be seen lurking around, I think he knew we'd get away anyways.

Added to that, Catnap tells us to leave constantly through the chapter. Not just once, not twice. He wrote everywhere that we had to leave.

We know how eagerly he obeys tye Prototype, so we can assume most of the things he does, the Prototype asked him to. Probably same for Huggy. And Mommy could have been an outlier in following the Prototype but she seemed to be scared of him enough to at least not go against him.

So my theory is that the Prototype doesn't want us dead. He just wants us to leave the factory. He had two occasions to kill us himself, yet he didn't. All three main antagonists eventually tried to kill us in the end of each chapter but Huggy ended up seemingly dead (we know he's not tho), Mommy killed by us and then retrieved by him. He didn't had the time to punish them for trying to kill us. But he did for Catnap. And i think that's why he ended up killing him. Either Catnap wasn't supposed to end us or it was punishment for failing to drive us away without coming to harm.

Poppy and the Prototype are on opposed sides, that much is clear. Poppy wants us to uncover the full truth behind Playtime Co, the Prototype wants us to leave and forget about it all.

So that means there is far more to discover down that damned Factory. Things the Prototype doesn't want us to discover.

Test samples and a prototype of the Mane Melody set, shown in Hasbro's booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 in July. 

Hasbro had a section at SDCC where they had numerous displays of their toy brands from over the years, such as G.I. Joe, Transformers, My Little Pony, etc. The company was celebrating its 100th anniversary.

My Little Pony had a a few displays, in which one of them showcased ponies from every generation. Notably, included were test samples of the Mane 5, Misty, and Opaline. There was also a prototype of the Mane Melody toy set. 

Misty and Opaline have molded manes and tails, although Opaline also has articulated legs. Mane Melody has a slightly different design from its final release.

NEW 2023 Furby prototype

hello furby friends, so perhaps the Biggest break in furby in almost that past 7 years which is WILD to think about, but a prototype for a new line of furbys leaked this morning on ebay at around 8am cst.

AGAIN this is wild, but is shows renwed interest from hasbro in the furby line. but first a general description,

So, bellow are the photos. 

The furby is an early run electroics prototype, these are can be very close to the final design, with the cosmetic proto being handed over for electronic prototyping.  the wires (as far as I can read) are as follows

Motor Ir encoder Microphone Left ear led Right ear led Back cap Front cap Sw & led Spear Mouth sw (switch) Neutral

So it apears they are going somewhat functionally similar to a 1998. this is also shown in the fact that they are using the og 1998 logo on the bottom. 

The board also reads 5-5-2022, so it is for sure recent. 

further into the cosmetics, it apears to be simialr to their fuzzalots brand. 

So it seems thats the direction that they are going in. which to me is... disapointing 

SO what adds to this story is the fact that Hasbro was alerted shortly after to the listing and were VERY interested. showing the first public interest directly in the furby brand in years. 

the ebay listing was the struck down less than an hour later

it was orginaly on auction for $50 then relisted, 

so overall. today has been a very interesting look into Hasbro playing around with a more modern furby... just observing the similarites to fuzzalots if this furby is released, it will retial for around 10-15$ which i think is a good price point, however I think that fans would prefer a more direct homage to 1998s, for those of you in the same boat as me, I think that the best we can hope for is hasbro having gone in a diffrenet direction, And with hasbro pushing their toy appearnce back, I suspect we will see an annoucment in mid september which would be just in time for the 25th aniversery. I will try my best to attend the toyfair in person or online and I will keep you guys updated.

Spunky the camel and prototype Cornelia from 1987 Hasbro Toy Fair catalog

It’s Toy Time Tuesday! With...PROTOTYPE Unreleased Fashion Star Fillies Dara! Straight from The Filly Catwalk comes these 2 known photos of this proto pose that only she ever appeared in. The Filly Catwalk is a super interesting & just refurbished website that was on Site Tourin’ Saturday but practically nobody went there which is a shame because it is very interesting so you should totally go and look at all the information once you see this. As you can see, the pose is walking, but the head is more down/forward as though she is concentrating. Notice how close the toe is to the ground and the angle of her head. The photo on the box corner shows the pose again. Naturally, she has all the same accessories as normal version. TFC will tell you also that nobody knows why this didn’t get made. Maybe it was too similar to Lani’s pose? Either way, a few of it DID get made and TFC seems to have actually managed to buy one into the collection, which is great. It is 100% proof. Next... There are TWO protos here! Look at the Joelle. It’s not just odd photography lighting, her hair is a color of pink that was never done. (Her hair is Blue Belle’s wisteria shade of purple) The body is also too pink, and for good measure, no amount of odd lighting will turn the legs/hooves a completely different color. This pink hair Joelle though, may have been one of a kind. It still makes these photos doubly interesting to see.
