The link between warfare and technological innovation has been well documented [...]. World War II was a particularly intense crucible of technological change, and the repurposing of military technologies and industries in the forging of a new post-war consumer [economy] is crucial [...]. Processes of technological bricolage turned the machines of war onto the natural world as global powers competed to cement their economic and imperial hegemony. In Great Britain’s post-war “groundnut scheme” in its East African territories (1946–51), this collision of nature, military hardware, and technical expertise was part of efforts to both produce more fats for the British diet and to demonstrate to the world (most importantly the United States) that, through a newly energized science-led developmentalism, British colonialism still had a “progressive” role to play in the postwar world.
Tumblr media
The aim was to produce millions of tons of peanuts across Tanganyika using the latest methods of advanced scientific agriculture. The environmental conditions in the north, where the scheme was to begin, were known to be especially trying, not least the dry climate [...]. But faith in the power of mechanized agriculture was such that any natural limits were thought to be readily surmountable.
The groundnut scheme was to be, as its Director put it in an interview with the Tanganyika Standard, a “war” with nature, and an “economic Battle of Alamein” waged over some three million acres by an army of colonial technicians -- many recruited from military ranks -- and local laborers, for many of whom the scheme represented their first entry into the wage labor market.
---
But it wasn’t just the rhetoric of war that was repurposed.
Lancaster bombers were kitted out to survey and discover “new country” in East Africa for agricultural development. [...] [T]ractors and bulldozers from military surplus stores in Egypt proved unable to tackle the hard ground and tough vegetation, so the planners turned to a novel solution: repurposing surplus Sherman M4A2 tanks. The Vickers-Armstrong factory in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne set about rearranging key elements of the tanks’ construction [...]. The tractors, christened “Shervicks” for their hybrid origins, were [...] thought to be particularly suited to large-scale earth-moving and to the kind of heavy duty “bush clearing” that was required in Tanganyika.
Tumblr media
Officials sought to dismiss concerns that large-scale bush clearing would have wider environmental consequences, using the well-worn colonial trope that any observed changes in local climate or erosion patterns were due to the “primitive” agricultural practices of the locals, not to the earth-moving practices of the colonists.
Albert Walter, who had directed meteorology in East Africa since the 1920s, had been appointed as an advisor to the scheme and warned the other technical advisers of the low rainfall levels. [...] As the plants continued to wilt in the sun, Walter’s dense network of rain gauges made for an ideal field laboratory [...].
Tumblr media
The stakes were high. As John Rosa of the Colonial Development Corporation put it in a letter: “Our standing as an Imperial power in Africa is to a substantial extent bound up with the future of this scheme. To abandon it would be a humiliating blow to our prestige everywhere.”
The only option left was to try and bend the weather itself to the scheme’s will, by seeding the clouds for rain. The scheme was nonetheless abandoned by the British government before charcoal burners could be lined up to seed clouds upwind of the growing area. But the experiments carried on under the aegis of the local colonial government and its meteorologists.
“Balloon bombs” (photographic film canisters tethered to weather balloons) and a repurposed Royal Navy flare gun were used to target individual clouds when the burners proved imprecise. [...] The rainmaking experiments lived on too, as a reference point for those who, to this day, seek to engineer the skies.
The scheme itself has survived as a cautionary tale of governmental hubris, but it is instructive too as a case study of how technologies of war have been turned against other foes.

The Himura clan
did some research! lots of research, actually, all about what being 'village headmen' entailed, what it meant to be wealthy post-land reforms, and I've even come up with a theory/explanation about why they had numerous branch families. let me share what I've found:
(but first, please go read @stillness-in-green’s wonderful review of chapter 387 that contains a great explanation on clan intermarriage and how the situation at the Himura’s must have looked!
The 庄屋 - Shouya - "Village Leaders"
Tumblr media
Shouya translates to village headmen, village leader - which is correct, but I don’t think that tells the whole story. So I’ll tell it to everyone:
The 'village headman' (and his lineage) was part of a specific, special rank of 'titled' peasants during the Tokugawa period (1603 - 1867). Basically, they were the elite of the peasant elites. When the shogunate came into power, it created a new system of village offices of headman and council to better collect taxes - and this new status granted prestige and the power to collect and deliver tribute, keep records and maintain the population register, and generally presiding over all public affairs. Headmen were still peasants, but they would be allowed things that would normally be only entitled to the warrior/samurai class, like the usage of surnames, the wearing of silk, and even carrying one (1) small sword.
(Source: Tokugawa Village Practice, by Herman Ooms)
With these culminated privileges and means, then, it was easy for village headmen to get cultivate lots of land, get rich, establish lineages and cadet branches, cultivate more land, get richer, etc. This being feudalism, all land belonged to the central state, so they weren't exactly landowners, but they essentially functioned as wealthy landlords (and became exactly that when the Meiji era (1868 - 1912) established the right to private land ownership.)
Tumblr media
This is what the Himura(?) marriage broker meant when they talked about how the family was once "considered prestigious, with a long and storied history", and when Geten spoke of the Himura having wealth and pride. This is a family who could trace their history and genealogy back to samurai times, a lineage with inherited land and fortune that has been continuous for over 500 years by the time the story in HeroAca takes place.
The 農地改革 - Nouchikaikaku - Land Reforms
Tumblr media
idk what exactly Official Viz Translator Caleb Cook was thinking when he decides to translate nouchikaikaku - agrarian reforms - as ‘agricultural revolution’ which (to me) brings to mind ‘the era when cavemen starts farming’. It’s not incorrect, exactly, but there are much better options that have more accurate connotations. Nouchikaikaku can be referring to land reforms in general, but here, it is almost certainly talking about the post-WWII land reforms of 1947.
Some background: When poor farmers fall into debt - due to crop failures, due to the chaotic economic times, due to random things like "a fall in the price of rice coinciding with the expense of a wedding or funeral where social custom would permit of no stinting", just having one bad day, etc. - they usually were forced to sell their land... then stay and become tenant farmers on that same land, except now they were paying rent that could be as high as half their income. Thus a system of landlords and tenants came to be, and the gap between their economic statuses would widen.
By 1941, 46% of cultivated land in Japan were tenanted; and only 30% of peasants owned all the land they tilled. (In other words, landlords owned nearly half of all farmland, and 70% of farming households were tenants of some kind.)
(Source: Land Reform in Japan, by Ronald Dore)
This is where land reforms come in, in order to correct this inequality.
After the war, all absentee landowners and landlords who own too many acres were required to sell their land to the government, who then sold it to the people who actually worked the land. In this way, large landlords was practically eliminated, tenant farming was no more, and every farming family became proper small property owners, and Japan's land reform is considered today to be one of the most successful in history.
The whole purpose of the land reforms was to reduce the wealth and power of rich landlords... So how is it that the Himura clan somehow found a way to keep all that?
This is, I think, where the key words of "by creating branch families" come into play.
Quick jump back to the agrarian reforms: Under the land reform laws, owning and selling land became a very regulated affair - Corporations and non-farmers cannot own farmland; there was a maximum limit to how much land a person/family could have; only limited local landlording was allowed, and even then, tenants rights were favored.
Essentially, the “only way an individual could acquire farmland was by joining a farm family through birth, adoption, or marriage, then co-residing with the preceding generation until inheriting the parents' land, and eventually passing the same land to a household heir to repeat the cycle.”
So, my theory:
The Himura, as wealthy ancestral landlords, were bound to lose land (and their fortune) when the land reforms came. To avoid doing so - or, rather, to gain back land they had to sell - they could've started marrying local neighboring families, bringing them into the Himura clan. Each non-eldest, non-inheriting son who married out would already be creating a branch, and have access to his wife's family's land; with the Himura's influence and status, it wouldn't be strange if their daughters' husbands take the Himura name instead of the other way around.
Heck, they also could've just adopted people - one traditional method was indeed this: "families often adopted as “branch families” people who were not related by blood. This kind of branch family was often in an economically subordinate position: perhaps a family of farm workers who depended on the stem “family” for land and tools. The fictive familiar relationship added extra depth and strength to the economic relationship."
Thus, on paper, a tract of land is owned by a individual couple or family... but that couple or family is now Himura, and therefore the Himura clan have increased in branch families, and maintained/maybe even increased their wealth (land), exactly as Geten says.
Which is why when the Advent came, "Heteromorph blood" became so abhorrent?
To be sure, they were likely just bigots who discriminated against Heteromorphs for being different.
However, if their whole operation had been to bring people into the clan, this hatred would mean a loss of marriage and adoption candidates. Anyone who had heteromorphic quirks were out; anyone who came from a family that had even one (1) individual with a heteromorphic quirk was out, since that trait could be inherited. As @stillness-in-green points out in her post, "Given that the characters in-universe still don’t know the origin of quirks, there’s no way to completely guarantee desirable quirks, or even to perfectly guard against the dreaded heteromorphic quirks," outsiders had the potential to bring surprise heteromorph blood, which would've been horrifying for them.
Official Viz Translator Caleb Cook translated this part as 'They [the Himura] didn't want to dilute their blood', but the more accurate translation, I feel, would be 'they hated the mixing of blood'.
Tumblr media
'Dilute' gives off the sense that they wanted to keep their 'Himura essence' or whatever pure, which is true to a point; but in the context that Mr. Compress gives us - heteromorph discrimination - and how it's only after the Advent that the result of clan endogamy came to be, I think it's more accurate to say that, yeah, the Himura specifically did not want to associate or mingle with 'unknown qualities', so to speak. They hated the idea of that ‘mixing'; so the Himura had to turn inwards to be certain that no heteromorph lineage could be mixed into the clan.
In doing so, the Himura would've lost their traditional method of growth. No more increasing branch families; instead, the branches would combine and decrease. No more obtaining, inheriting, and accumulation of land to the Himura name. The family shrink and wane, and eventually lost everything altogether.
(and the final delicious irony of all this is that their last ditch effort to marry off Rei would be consistent with their earlier methods, trying to save themselves and obtain wealth...
Tumblr media
except this time it would be too little, too late.)
Thanks for reading!

Why did the Templars just disappear in the early Middle Ages when they were so powerful?
They didn’t disappear. They were purged.
Most of them, anyway. Think Order 66 with swords.
But in order to understand why the Knights Templar were rounded up on Friday the 13th, 1307, you need to understand the context of the time in which it happened. Several factors contributed to the fall of the Templars, but the biggest one was this guy:
Tumblr media
This is Philip IV, King of France, who ruled from 1285 until his death in 1314. He was the main architect in the fall of the Templars—but I’m getting ahead of myself.
The fall of the Knights Templar was set in motion when the Siege of Acre ended in 1291. When it fell to the Mamluk forces, it marked the loss of the entire Holy Land for Christendom. Acre had been the last piece of territory in the Holy Land held by Christians, so its fall was a grievous blow to Europe. It was an unmitigated disaster.
That’s where the Templars come in.
The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, or Templars for short, were originally established after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem at the end of the First Crusade. Their mission was to guide and protect pilgrims on the road to the holy city, as traveling in those days was fraught with peril. Those who joined the order in those early days took vows of poverty, chastity, piety and obedience, and their sigil even showed two men riding on the same horse to emphasize the Templars’ rejection of worldly goods.
Their self-imposed poverty didn’t last long, however. The Templars soon found a powerful advocate in a priest named Bernard of Clairvaux, who wielded a great of amount of influence in the Catholic Church. Clairvaux was so psyched about the Templars that he wrote books talking about how awesome they were, and this got everybody so pumped that in 1189 Pope Innocent II issued a papal bull saying that the Templars were exempted from paying taxes to anyone and didn’t have to obey local laws or customs. Instead, the Templars would answer only to the Pope himself. With this kind of public prestige, the Knights Templar soon became a popular charity: powerful lords and peasants alike donated their money, businesses, and even vast tracts of land to their cause, and sons from noble families from across Europe clamored to join them.
The Order quickly grew to be one of the most powerful military and financial institutions in Europe. They achieved famous victories such as the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, when some 500 Templar knights, backed up by a force of only several thousand foot soldiers, took on more than 26,000 enemy soldiers and absolutely crushed them. At the height of their power, the Templars were so rich and so powerful that even the crowned heads of Europe didn’t want to cross them. They controlled vast tracts of land throughout Europe and the Middle East, built massive cathedrals and castles, and were heavily involved in manufacturing as well as imports and exports, which is why they controlled a large fleet of trading ships and an even larger navy. They even set up an early kind of banking system and bought the whole freaking island of Cyprus.
A century after their founding, the Templars had become an independent state in all but name. Some historians have even called them the first true multinational corporation.
But when Acre fell and the Christians lost their grip on the Holy Land, the Templars lost their reason for being. Even as they grew in power they never neglected their original purpose of protecting pilgrims on the road to Jerusalem. But now that the Holy Land was lost, there weren’t any pilgrims to protect. The loss of the Holy Land also did a lot to diminish their reputation in the eyes of peasants and nobles alike, some of whom even blamed them for the catastrophe that Christendom had suffered. Public support for the order began to wane.
I mean, imagine that you’re a European king or feudal lord for a just second. The Templars have returned to Europe in the aftermath of the Third Crusade. Maybe they’re even travelling through your land. They’ve got a massive army, a massive navy, they don’t pay taxes, they’re richer than sin, and they can do pretty much whatever the hell they want because the laws literally don’t apply to them. The only person with the authority to command the Templars to do anything is the Pope, and Rome’s a long way away. If they decide to camp outside your castle and eat your food and drink your wine for three weeks as your “guests,” there’s nothing you can do about it. The idea of such a powerful force with so little accountability would have made you pretty uneasy. And the Templars themselves did little to relieve that anxiety. Many of them could, and did, take full advantage of their immunity to local laws and customs. The phrase “drunk as a Templar” became popular for a reason. To be sure, all this might have been more easily borne before the tide of the Crusades turned against the Crusaders, but now these jokers are walking around all lordly-wise and they’re not even winning anymore. All of this made a lot of very powerful people very nervous and increasingly disgruntled.
The point I’m trying to get at here is that the Templars were already having some serious PR issues even before Philip IV of France came along. Speaking of which…
See, Philip IV came to the French throne in 1285, and by 1303 he found himself and his kingdom deeply in debt after several failed—and very expensive—military campaigns. King Phil couldn’t afford to pay for all that on his own, so he went to the only people in Europe who could loan him the cash he needed. Those people—you guessed it—were the Templars, and he opened a huge tab with them that only got larger with time. And since King Philip seems to have had the financial acumen of a freaking goldfish, it didn’t take long for him to bring his kingdom into dire straits.
Now, Philip shared many of the same concerns about the Templars as his contemporaries, but he was probably much more worried about how much money he owed them. He may have even feared that the Knights would try to overthrow him if he wasn’t able to pay them back—and he damn sure wasn’t able to pay them back, not after borrowing such enormous sums.
In short, all of his biggest headaches seemed to trace back to the Templars. So what did he decide to do?
Get rid of the Templars, of course. By destroying them, he could eliminate a potential threat to his authority, wipe out his debt, and replenish his kingdom’s coffers all in one fell swoop.
But the Templars were traditionally protected by the Pope, so Philip IV’s first task was to remove their shield of papal authority. He did this by committing an act almost as audacious as his persecution of the Templars: stacking the papacy. Here is when we first see his Machiavellian brilliance on full display, for it was through this web of machinations—which included bribery, intimidation, and even violence—that he was able to get a puppet Pope, Clement V, installed in the Vatican. Clement issued the edicts, but it was Philip who pulled his strings. The King of France now had de facto control over the Catholic Church, and he used that control to have Pope Clement draw up a long list of charges against the Templars. These included blasphemy, heresy, sodomy, idol-worship and even witchcraft. He also accused the Templars of performing obscene rites in their initiation ceremonies, which was a clever charge to make because the Templars kept the details of those ceremonies a closely-guarded secret. No one knew what those ceremonies entailed, and the Templars were forbidden by oath from discussing them with outsiders, so they couldn’t really refute the charges against them.
Needless to say, few historians take these any of these accusations seriously. They were almost certainly fabrications concocted by the king himself.
Next, Philip lured all the Templar leaders to France on a pretext. He claimed that he wanted to discuss merging them with another knightly order, the Knights Hospitaller. All the most powerful Templars heeded his call and came to France. Many were accompanied by lavish baggage trains, which Philip was no doubt counting on. He then issued secret instructions to all his officials in every city and town where the Templars were staying. So did Pope Clement, at Philip’s behest.
In other words, these orders were sent out not just across France but across Europe, to every village, city, castle and keep with a Templar presence. It was received by princes, judges and civil officials in Spain, England, Germany and Cyprus. But no matter who they were sent to, the orders were the same:
At daybreak on Friday the 13th of October, 1307, every Templar in sight was to be arrested. Nothing was to be said to anyone about the raid before it happened, on pain of death if the plot was given away.
The plan went off like clockwork. It took the Templars completely by surprise. At dawn on the appointed day, they suddenly found themselves under attack all over the Continent. Some managed to escape, but many of them were rounded up and imprisoned or killed. Those unlucky enough to be captured, including their Grand Master Jacques du Molay, were tortured until they confessed to the trumped-up charges that had been leveled against them. Many of them died from this terrible treatment or were burned at the stake, and Pope Clement officially dissolved the Knights Templar several years later. Du Molay himself was eventually burned at the stake along with many of his comrades.
But the immense wealth that Philip had planned on seizing never materialized. The vast treasure the Templars brought with them to France was never recovered, and no one knows what happened to it. We do know that a Templar fleet of more than twenty vessels was anchored in the French city of La Rochelle before the purge and vanished overnight shortly after it began, but no one knows where it went. Some believe that the Templars used those ships smuggle their treasure out of France just in the nick of time, but there’s no way to know for certain. And even if they did, the treasure is just as lost to us today as it would have been had it stayed in France.
Nor does anyone know for certain what happened to the Templars who were lucky enough to survive the purge. Some of them no doubt faded into the background or lived the rest of their lives in hiding. Others may have vanished into the ranks of the Knights Hospitaller. A lucky few might have been able to bribe or plead enough for clemency if they were caught.
There are stories, though. One of the most persistent legends says that some of the remaining Templars managed to make it to Scotland, where they later fought for Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The Templars had strong connections with Scotland that dated back for more than a century, and Robert had little reason to honor the papal decree to purge the Templars. The pope had excommunicated him and his entire country after he murdered one of his rivals, John Comyn, inside a church on February 10, 1306, and now the King of Scots was fighting a brutal war against the English. If the Templars did indeed show up on his doorstep, he would have been happy to have such experienced and fearsome warriors on his side. But to date, no solid evidence has been found to give this theory credence.
Another legend—and my personal favorite—claims that some of the Templars fled to the Swiss Alps. In fact, there are stories in Switzerland even today of “armed white knights” who helped the Swiss crush an invasion by Duke Leopold of Hapsburg in 1315, just a few years after the purge. Could these “white knights” have been Templars? If they were, they picked a perfect spot. The Swiss Alps are formidable even with today’s technology, so they would have been an ideal location to hide in. They would also have been a great place for the Templars to put their expertise to good use. In fact, some claim that these fugitive Templars trained the very first Swiss pikemen, who went on to win renown as the most fearsome fighters in Europe. It is, after all, fairly remarkable how quickly the Swiss, who had been simple subsistence farmers for centuries before Duke Leopold’s invasion, became some of the finest warriors of their day. The story even goes so far as to claim that the Templars also taught the Swiss their secrets of banking and finance, and that those same secrets eventually evolved into the unique banking system still used in Switzerland today.
But by far the most fantastical—and least likely—story says that a group of Templars fled to North America, and that they used old maritime routes first pioneered by the Vikings centuries earlier to island-hop across the North Atlantic until they landed somewhere along the upper northeastern seaboard. Few historians take this assertion seriously, however, as there is almost no archaeological evidence to back it up.
Ultimately, as with the final destination of their fabled wealth, the true fate of the last Templars will likely never be known.

⸸ The Turn of the Screw ⸸
(What if Miles was a yandere?)
Based on: The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Turning (2020)
Characters: Aged-Up Yandere Miles Fairchild, the Fairchilds, Mrs. Grose, Peter Quint and Ms. Jessel
Warning: terror and violence, yandere is its own warning
Includes: childhood trauma, death of parents, fear of loss, gaslighting, typical gothic horror themes, maybe supernatural, maybe psychological, obsession, Victorian era
~~~~~~~~~
⸸ Somewhere, East of England, a grand and immense estate sits over more than hundreds of acres of land.
⸸ For generations, a family of great wealth and prestige has been residing within its walls. But for years, ever since the last Mr. and Mrs. Bly passed away, its gates had been shut from the rest of the world. Many wonder what had become of the once glamorous family, but many more worry for the orphaned children.
⸸ But it had been nearly a decade since. The little babe, the youngest of the two children, Flora, was now a young girl. The boy, her brother, the one that was only seven or eight when he witnessed his parents' passing was now a young man, soon to be the new head of the Fairchild family.
⸸ Time had moved on. It seemed that the sun is beginning to shine its light once more on the family...but it seems that the Master of the House is still trapped in the darkness.
Tumblr media
Miles Fairchild (The Young Master of Bly Manor)
⸸ He was once a sweet child, believe it or not. Spoiled and stubborn just like his parents, but what child of a socialite wasn't?
⸸ Miles was given everything he ever wanted. If he wanted a new toy, he shall have it. A black stallion that could easily dislocate a grown man's jaw with its kick? Do not fret, the mother will be sure to nag the father until he changed his mind.
⸸ They did so out of guilt, for they believed that they had been lacking as mentors. Far often, they spent their time overseas than at home with their only child.
⸸ This flaw persisted even into his adulthood, as he was only ever surrounded by servants that had no choice but to give in to his demands lest they lose their income, and three enabling guardians, two of which were now deceased.
Really, is it still a mystery as to why he didn't take your rejection so nicely?
⸸ And another thing you must understand as a new member of the Bly Household is the Young Master's...'aversion' to loneliness, and more confusing perhaps, his revulsions towards anyone that gets too close. Let me explain...
⸸ Miss Jessel might have only been his governess, but he looked up to her as one would a dear, older sister. In the end, she abandoned him.
⸸ Then, in what Miles assumed was done out of grief and heartbreak, Peter Quint drunk himself to the point of being incapable of riding a horse. The Young Master was only just a boy, then, when he found his new father figure dead, his neck bent at a deadly angle.
⸸ Truly, he fears you would leave him like Miss Jessel did, or die just like Quint the moment he leaves you for even a second.
⸸ Then, you start saying you do not want to be here, that you could no longer bear his abuse, that you could no longer stand this place and all of its dark secrets.
⸸ Ghosts, you say? Dear, there are no ghosts.
⸸ And as harsh and stern he may be, he was not a cruel master. Ask everyone that ever met or worked for him. He never once raised his hand to hurt a living thing.
⸸ And with you spouting nonsense about Peter Quint's ghost tormenting you, and Miss Jessel pleading you to leave, no one will believe that it was him who gave you those bruises around your wrists.
⸸ And at times, even you yourself questioned if you were right. Were these bruises really from his hands? Or had you simply hurt yourself, and deluded yourself like you did those phantoms? Had it ever been his intention to make you his prisoner, or was he keeping you here out of concern for your safety?
⸸ Were you wrong to lash out on him for being concerned for you?
"It was never my intent to hurt you, Miss. I care and worry for you, I truly do. But I know that your mother is mentally ill, and I...I fear that you suffer the same affliction."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is more of an excuse to vent my frustrations about the movie than anything. I really liked the original, so I was hesitant to watch the movie (especially after seeing the ratings). Now that I did, I understand why. I loved the setting, atmosphere, Wolfhard, and the rest of the actors, but the ending was so disappointing.

"It is not habitation amid wilderness. Mankind has conquered nature instead of adjusting to it. Often the new instant enclaves have a supermarket, a cleaning and dyeing establishment, and a laundromat. The immigrating mini-city populace consists of country club types rather than hillsiders.
Although Lillard was writing only a decade and a half ago, his mountain frontier is now extinct. "Country club types" have everywhere conquered and now monopolize the picturesque seacoasts and foothills. Despite brave but belated attempts at open space conservation, like those of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Southern California's remnant natural landscape continues to be destroyed or privatized. As we saw earlier, fire itself accelerates gentrification and the replacement of bohemian lifestyles by snobbery and exclusiveness. The real impetus of this movement to the hills is no longer love of the great outdoors or frontier rusticity, but, as critic Reyner Banham recognized in the 1960s, the search for absolute "thickets of privacy" outside the dense fabric of common citizenship and urban life.
Hillside homebuilding, moreover, has despoiled the natural heritage of the majority for the sake of an affluent few. Instead of protecting "significant ecological areas" as required by law, county planning commissions have historically been the malleable tools of hillside developers. Much of the beautiful coastal sage and canyon riparian ecosystems of the Santa Monica Mountains have been supplanted by castles and "guard-gate prestige." Elsewhere in Southern California-in the Verdugo, Puente, San Jose, San Joaquin, and San Raphael Hills, as well as the Santa Susana, Santa Ana, and San Gabriel Mountains-tens of thousands of acres of oak and walnut woodland have been destroyed by bulldozers to make room for similar posh developments."

Chapter 10 Fieldwork
Karl Marx theory focuses on the struggle between capitalists and the working class. Marxists attempt to show that the middle class is declining, and polarization of society into two classes is a strong tendency within capitalism. Marx's view was that the successful members of the middle class would become members of the bourgeoisie, while the unsuccessful would be forced into the proletariat. This article’s illustrates his theory by giving an example of workers going on a strike for more pay, but still believe that management have the right to manage. People can have their own ideas in there heads and their understanding can change from time to time. Working in a big company such as Apple, they can get payed a decent amount but not as much as the value produces. It can be a struggle of working hard but still not getting enough as they think they should.
https://www.counterfire.org/theory/37-theory/23541-marxism-and-class-part-four-capitalism-and-class-consciousness
Weber theory was that owning property, such as factories or equipment, is only part of what determines a person's social class. For him social class included power and prestige, in addition to property or wealth. A person can still run corporations without owning them still benefit from increased production and greater profits. This article shows many people who own a good amount of properties which would make their social class great. For example, it shows a top 50 family with the best properties or amount of land area. The least amount of and area on this list is 260,000 acre. Mostly anything below that will make their social class ranking decrease.
Bourdieu's theory of class proposes that capital and habitus are two key elements in educational reproduction. Capital includes participation in cultural activities and cultural material resources, and habitus focuses on subjective attitudes and dispositions. This article shows how Covid taught America about inequality in education. The pandemic has invaded education worldwide, bring more focus on racial and economic disparities which is creating the potential for a lost generation. Students in vulnerable communities are already facing inequality from resources to student and teacher ratio and extracurriculars. To help with this, reopening of schools presents opportunities to introduce changes and that some of the lessons from remote learning, particularly in the area of technology, can be put to use to help students catch up from the pandemic as well as to begin to level the playing field.

I Travel Troubled Oceans - Chapter 31: In Which Fractures Begin to Form
Jack's little business empire has expanded again. He's essentially running a couture house now – although his application to actually be called a couture house hasn't been approved yet. And indeed, he may need to make some additional inroads to France to actually get the approval of the Federation, but he meets all of the requirements.
He's even moved into a dedicated studio space, with state-of-the-art technology and two-dozen seamstresses, largely provided by Eme, and acres of storerooms and even a catwalk for critiquing designs. Because despite all the digital drawing boards, Jack is still very much mocking up designs on the dressmaker's dummies before actually putting pen to paper. Or gigantic touchscreen computers. Whichever.
Still, it's all very modern and sleek and impressive to the investors he's seeking to court. Housed in a converted warehouse, the noble brick edifice pocked with large, modern windows, it's the exact mix of historical precedent and modern sensibility that has built his (Max's) real estate empire. And just like the imperial remnants making up his gullible marks on the real estate side of things, the same toffee mouthed suit wearing old guard eats it up on the fashion side as well. Or their wives do, at any rate, and he's discovered that a lot of the time, the wives are the ones holding the pocket books.
Just as the industrial revolution forced the landowning British aristocracy to look to gauche American millionairesses for bridal stock, a similar thing is happening now with the technological revolution.
So many nouveau riche sprouting up out of the woodwork with their computer security systems or their sweatshops full of overseas call center employees, providing goods and services no one who attended Eton would ever have thought to invest in, at least non until it became ubiquitous. It's not prestigious or old money enough.
There's an over-the-top glamour to it that just appears chintzy when compared to the rambling country estates and the pheasant hunts and all the pageantry of the old money crowd. But those country estates are crumbling at the foundations. Those hunts a show put on to pretend that they haven't burned through all their money. That they're still relevant. Powerful.
But that's the thing. It's a show that works. A trick that's fooled a great number of the nouveau riche that despite all of their millions, they still haven't made it. They're still not really sitting in the seat of power carved out by thousands of years of noble British arses.
And so they either get angry, fight to make their type of rich the only on that matters, or they “marry up.” Buy their way into the prestige they crave. The gravitas of the British empire at it's height. The ruins of British aristocracy can all be had, and for a comparative pittance.
After all, it's what Jack's doing.
And the brothel has payed major dividends by way of an impoverished hotel chain owner (gambling debts, you understand) looking to offload some property quickly. It's a block of residential flats he'd purchased with the intent to demolish them and put up a luxury hotel once waterfront development got a bit further along. As he and the other property owners hadn't had the Councilor on side, the redevelopment efforts went nowhere and the flats have sat vacant for nearly two decades.
Why he didn't just choose to rent them out? Well, that would take effort, wouldn't it. And he hadn't gotten where he'd been (millions of pounds in debt to some very unsavory individuals) by putting in effort, by planning for the future instead of living in the now now now.
Jack, on Max's orders, of course, had snapped the flats up for a song. They're not in the residential market, but a little elbow grease and they'd be quite livable. Much more livable than the council estates most of Eme's seamstresses and house cleaners and some of Max's brothel girls lived at.
A perk of the job, as he'd keep the rent reasonable (for London) and he'll feel better with all his eggs under one easily protected roof. There's been whispers of a new player on the streets. One who's gunning for Flint's old spot on the hierarchy. One who, unlike Flint, only desires to sew chaos and disorder, and who wields violence as his only tool.
Charles has tried to find out more, but his underground boxing ring knows only the same rumors Max has heard. That they're foreign and are going after, well, everyone. Random people in the street. Businesses and banks. No real motive or method, other than mayhem.
Mary is getting brought along to threaten someone on the Immigration Council into giving immigration visas to all the people Eme's found to staff their little business empire. They've been living in Britain for years – in some cases decades – but in the shadows. Below the radar. Brought in as cleaners or farm laborers or just because they had family already living there, family to take them in and help them get jobs away from the plantations and resort hotels of the Caribbean. And now they have the political capital to make them legal citizens.
Via blackmail gained at the illegal brothel they run, but still.
And normally, it'd be Charles going with Anne. Or going by himself, really. He loves that sort of thing, B&E and breaking kneecaps and all. But he's not really on board with this mission, is the thing. Had a giant screaming row with Jack about it, in fact.
Tying them down with legal identities had been one complaint. Plus there's the whole thing with becoming landlords and then generously offering those apartments to their employees for well below the average London rent. Who wouldn't want that?
Charles, apparently, who thinks everyone should be a squatter with no legal address or birth certificate.
Frankly, Mary doesn't see anything wrong with charging rent for the flats they just bought. Sure, they don't have a mortgage they need to pay off, but there's always projects to be funded. Palms to be greased and favors to be bought. Leverage to be applied.
Mary knows because she compiles all the files on their marks and their potential enemies and their potential allies. Who they can afford to screw over and who they need to make nice with.
And Mary doesn't see the big deal about making the flats available only to their employees. That way you know who you're renting to. You know your customers. And they have incentive to stay at the job, or to keep their flats clean and in good order.
But Charles hadn't seen it that way and now things have descended into sullen silence and is probably why Anne was so eager to get out of the house. And Mary so eager to go with her when usually her contributions to the gang lie in the realm of paper pushing and handling all the actual office tasks that go along with running a semi-legitimate business.
But she'd been on the streets before. As a dealer, sure, but still. She knows how to handle herself. And the gun she's got in her boot makes her feel a lot better about the whole thing. And Anne never goes anywhere without her knives. But they're starting off genteel like, with blackmail of the Councilor with his mistress from the brothel. And if that doesn't work, well. There's plenty of ways they can go from there.
It's worth it to keep Eme on board. Providing workers and providing legitimacy to their cover story of being from the Bahamas.
They're playing with expectations, after all. Making people think Jack's legitimate. That he started legitimately as a designer and clothing manufacturer in Nassau. And he had workers there. Workers he wants to bring to Britain, because they're trained in already. Because he's an eccentric millionaire and he can do whatever he pleases. And the Immigration Council will let him.
Or, they will once she and Anne are through with them.
