write in the tags what your first major wrestling event/ppv was
that you got to see live, in person or on stream, im curious - for me it was the 2018 NJPW Dominion show where Kenny Omega won the IWGP Heavyweight belt

(disclaimer that I’m not out here simping for or trying to defend a million dollar company, just a fan with frustrations)
the njpw/aew partnership has always felt incredibly unbalanced. FTR didn’t defend or talk about the IWGP tag belts and skipped out on WTL, Kenny (as much as I love the dude) has done 0 with the US belt, AEW did nothing to promote Willow being part of the Strong Tournament. Desperado set a match with Mox and that didn’t get mentioned. They didn’t even talk about Dominion until after it happened. New Japan social media and commentary make a big effort to keep continuity and talk about things going on in their partner promotions.
Even with Takeshita. DDT has tweeted about the heel turn, their wrestlers have mentioned it, I cannot remember the last time DDT was even mentioned on the show
I get that All Together Again and the Road Tour means 90% of their roster is booked up and it would be a struggle to appear live. But a build to a show doesn’t need to be done 2 weeks before. This is something we should have had going since tickets went on sale. Or at the very least, ask them to film backstage promos to send in, not just play the promotional videos and press conferences that New Japan did themselves.
Sorry, you sent this after I fell asleep, but I agree with everything you've said! Like, I'm not even trying to shit on AEW―it's just facts.
FTR and Kenny were the first people I thought of when Aussie Open had to relinquish the IWGP and Strong tag titles even though Mark would only be out 6 weeks. And Kevin Kelly explained at a later date that if the Dominion match hadn't been set they could have just kept the titles which, okay, fine. But that doesn't change that FTR and Kenny just sat/are just sitting on their respective titles. Also, I was Big Mad when Kenny defended the US title against Jeff Cobb on Dynamite and not a few weeks later at Capital Collision. Like, that's an NJPW belt, my guy. Kenny by God Omega coulda shoulda woulda brought soooooo many more eyes to Capital Collision/NJPW. (And I thought he would have known better, too? That was his home for years?)
But you hit the nail on the head—it's an unbalanced relationship and I frankly don't know what NJPW is getting out of it? Forbidden Door 2 is probably gonna be another routing of their talent like the first FD was.
And like you said, there's absolutely ways to work around people not being able to come to America in order to build a feud/to a PPV. But like I said to that anon, David Finlay been around and available. AEW had the time to meaningfully address the long, long history between him and BOTH Jay and Juice. Juice literally turned on Finlay to join Bullet Club and now Finlay is the leader and you're just gonna ignore that?! And Jay's been exiled from NJPW but he's still out here acting like he's in Bullet Club?! As if (in storyline) Finlay would just allow that happen?! PLEASE. Make it make sense.
Editing to add: there's still a chance to meaningfully introduce the White/Finlay feud AT Forbidden Door. As I said, Jay's been kayfabe exiled from NJPW (and working with NJPW talent, I believe?), so he really SHOULD NOT be anywhere near Toronto on June 25th if they're gonna uphold that. But he could show up because it's also an AEW event. And then Finlay could show up and be like, "Wtf do you think you're doing?" And boom, there you go. I HOPE that happens, genuinely. If not... I will fly to Florida just to smack Tony Khan.

It makes me think about Kenny’s IWGP US title reign after he beat Ospreay…
i considered dedicating an entire section in that post to how aew handled the ospreay-omega feud (and the fan reactions that followed) so as you can probably guess i'm incredibly happy to be prompted to talk about it separately. as it is something i'm very passionate about
(it's also what i alluded to when talking about a "story-heavy match" at forbidden door, so... you know)
i think a few things go into why kenny only had one defense with the belt, but the most important thing that stands out to me is that he wasn't supposed to have a second "reign" with the belt, per se. all he needed to do was take the belt from ospreay, and then drop the belt back to ospreay, because these were necessary story beats in their feud. what happened in between was... largely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things—and, upon passing the belt over to aew, they continued to treat it as such
as this was all happening, i remember thinking that maybe there was an underlying reason that had to do with... something shoot-related, i guess. maybe something like kenny wanting to be in the best possible shape for forbidden door, having less matches until then. but then the cage match with mox happened and that whole idea flew out the window
so, what remains is... the idea that aew didn't care about the us title belt. even if this wasn't the case, it definitely felt like it. but, then again, i also sometimes think about the possibility of kenny having a slew of dead-end squash matches (akin to the proving ground matches they keep putting athena in over on roh) and how... that would've been leagues worse than one memorable match with jeff cobb. but, at the end of the day, they definitely sidelined the belt itself while it was in kenny's hands
it's a bit ridiculous, actually, because over on the new japan side of things, the absence of the belt had a bigger impact than the presence of it did in aew. the mini tournament, ospreay's chase for the top contender spot... that's where all the action was. this, of course, was only ever brought up in passing, and in the video package they featured on the actual ppv
speaking of forbidden door, i think going into that match you were pretty much required to have known what was going on in new japan, otherwise the result left you either confused or even outright dissatisfied (ignoring the portion of the outrage that was simply just people disliking ospreay himself). without wrestle kingdom, without resurgence, without dominion, without ospreay's promos... the whole thing falls flat on its face. and it's because it's a new japan storyline that just happened to have its conclusion at a crossover event. it's an ospreay-centric story that kenny inserted himself into at historic x-over, and if you look at it from any other angle, it doesn't make a lick of sense

FAUST (1926) – Episode 145 – Decades Of Horror: The Classic Era
“Poor Faust, why do you seek death when you have not yet lived?” That does seem kind of backward. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, and Jeff Mohr, along with guest host Ralph Miller – as they head for the realm of silent horror with F.W. Murnau’s Faust (1926). Care to make a bargain?

Featuring innovative special effects for the time, Faust, directed by F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu, 1922), is one of the preeminent examples of German expressionism. Faust is Murnau’s final German film before heading to the U.S. where he would make three more films before passing in 1931 at the young age of 42. In the movie, Mephisto sets out to prove to an Archangel that he can corrupt a man’s soul. An early example of superb cinema and intellectual horror, it is a must-see indeed. Check out what the Grue-Crew thinks of this true masterpiece.
At the time of this writing, Faust can be streamed from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Kanopy, and Hoopla, as well as various subscription and PPV options. The movie is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber’s Kino Classics line. If you haven’t yet experienced Faust, there is no time like the present.
If silent films are your thing, you might want to check out these episodes of the Classic Era focusing on silent horror films:

NOSFERATU (1922) – Episode 21

In honor of Raquel Welch’s passing on 15 February 2023, the crew’s next topic will be Fantastic Voyage (1966). Despite what you might think, the film is not based on an Isaac Asimov novel. It does, however, feature Oscar-winning special effects along with performances from Donald Pleasance and a bevy of top-notch character actors.

Full disclosure RE I’m going to wait til the NJPW/NOAH ppv is up on World…it’s honestly less about expense and more that I’m not sure, having not bought a ppv since like 2001, and never having bought a streamed one…whether if my internet connection or power dies at the worst possible time (Tana’s match) if I’ll be able to immediately rewatch what I missed or not.  It’s not super common but it does happen, and outages can last anywhere from a minute to like 45 minutes, which is a sizable chunk of something I’d be paying probably nigh $50 for when I could just wait a week to watch it on the thing I’m already paying for 🤷‍♀️
It’s still going to feel absolutely Unnatural to miss a Tana match though.  First time since Dominion 2017.

Do you think the Forbidden Door card will be good?
I think so! But I am biased because everyone knows I like NJPW better than AEW, so IMO having them involved automatically elevates the event 😶 On the AEW side of things, though, I am pretty excited for the All Atlantic Championship final provided that Pac wins.
Also, if Okada vs. Hangman does move forward, I personally feel like that means Okada's gonna drop the IWGP Title to Jay at Dominion... and if Jay walks into Forbidden Door as champion, surely that warrants at least an appearance from Kenny, right? 👀
Ironically, though, I personally don't want anyone else in Bullet Club to get involved in this PPV or the AEW shenanigans. My precious bbies ELP and Chris Bey can stay working it in Nooj and Impact, thanks.
