CHARLIE CHAPLIN THEATER ANIMATION
I first saw this on You Tube 11 years ago.
Clever little PSA on how to behave in movie theater. It’s in Portuguese but the little Chaplin character walks you through it.  The one part where he is struggling with the door and the little kid just breezes right through cracks me up :)

Portuguese Pavement, Lisbon (No. 1)
Portuguese pavement, known in Portuguese as calçada portuguesa or simply calçada is a traditional-style pavement used for many pedestrian areas in Portugal. It consists of small flat pieces of stones arranged in a pattern or image, like a mosaic. It can also be found in Olivença (a disputed territory administered by Spain) and throughout former Portuguese colonies. Portuguese workers are also hired for their skill in creating these pavements in places such as Gibraltar. Being usually used in sidewalks, it is in town squares and atriums that this art finds its deepest expression.
One of the most distinctive uses of this paving technique is the image of Saint-Queen Elizabeth of Portugal, (Santa Rainha Isabel) in Coimbra, designed with black and white stones of basalt and limestone.

Propaganda
Martine Beswick (A Bullet for the General, Prehistoric Women, Thunderball)—She plays Adelita in the 1966 Italian zapata western “A Bullet for the General” (aka “Quién Sabe?”) a gunslinging revolutionary and she’s so wonderfully playful and scary and hot in the role. She also looks incredible in the absolutely absurd “Prehistoric Women.” Jamaican-born, Portuguese-Jamaican and British, she worked to help support her family from a young age.
Vanessa Redgrave (Camelot)—Partially submitted as justice for her father, and you should all know her birth was announced to a theatre audience by Laurence Olivier. But for herself, she is a wild untameable beauty who was in some of the best avant garde cinema of the period.
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Update 13 Dec 2023: Updated 13 Dec 2023 with a Portuguese translation by David Manaia as well as correcting the Level 10 metrics!
A mortician career for your sims! This was requested by Catrillion and was super interesting to research! Your sim can join it via the Hospital rabbithole and is available from Young Adult through to Elder.
If anyone would like to translate this, please feel free! The English strings are included in the download file, just drop me a message here or on MTS!
I used @missy-hissy's career tutorial to make this and a huge thanks to @zoeoe-sims for helping me with some infuriating bugs we finally got sorted out!
Details under the cut!
This career has ten levels and requires you to level Science and the hidden skill Styling, which can be improved by using the Styling Station to do makeovers at the salon. The skill won't show up in the skills panel, but the metric should change and you can track its level through MasterController.
Since there wasn't a strict progression for this job IRL, I've varied it a little bit to encompass all skills a fully qualified mortician and embalmer would need. There's long hours and extra studies included -- it's not an easy job!
There's no opportunities or books to read, but there are uniforms from the Medical career included, which should show up from Level 2. Carpool only shows up at Level 2 onwards, so don't panic if you need to manually send your sim to work.
Please note if you want to use this, you must have Nraas Careers installed for it to show up!
There's two custom tones:
Study Anatomy (increases Science) Practise Styling (increases Styling)
I've put the levels, hours, and pay under here if you'd like to take a look: Level 1 - At the Crossroads - 10:00 until 16:00, M-F, 10 simoleans p/h
Description: "You’ve always been fascinated by death, sneaking into the movie theatre to watch the horror flicks much too young and reading books your mother would have definitely taken away from you. You have a knack for biology and have followed Olive Specter’s SimTube channel since she first started uploading in the middle of the night. With the job market uncertain right now, why not look into becoming a mortician? It can’t be any worse than EverFresh Supermarket…"
Level 2 - Apprentice - 09:00 until 15:00, M-F, 30 simoleans p/h
Description: "After many days of scrolling through job listings and qualifications in the hospital cafe, you’ve finally found the guts to apply for an apprenticeship. It’s not the best paid and you’re still stuck in the classroom, but at least the coursework is interesting. Now just to pass the exams…"
Level 3 - Mortuary Admin Specialist - 09:00 until 17:00, M-F, 40 simoleans p/h
Description: "You’ve passed your course, got that diploma, and swaggered out of that classroom with a spring in your step… only for your first gig to be doing the admin work at the local mortuary. At the moment you’re spending your time booking appointments and sending emails with the occasional aside of cleaning the equipment, but show enough enthusiasm and you’ll soon be moving on up."
Level 4 - Mortuary Technician - 09:00 until 18:00, Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun, 60 simoleans p/h
Description: "Your first actual job is dressing and caring for the deceased, making sure they’re laid to rest in the coffin of their choosing and that their funeral is exactly what they and their family wanted. It’s delicate, gentle work, making sure death has dignity. Sometimes it’s the living that need you more; you’ll need a calm voice and be a shoulder to cry on for families who have to say goodbye."
Level 5 - Mortuary Technician Team Leader - 09:00 until 18:00, Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun, 75 simoleans p/h
Description: "You’ve proved to have a light touch with the makeup brush and know the right words to comfort the bereaved, so a promotion is in order and that means working with the parts that make up a human body. Your duties will include weighing organs, taking tissue samples, and reconstructing bodies so they’re ready to be buried. Make sure you study up on identifying diseases in organs if you want that promotion!"
Level 6 - Senior Mortuary Manager - 09:00 until 18:00, Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun, 105 simoleans p/h
Description: "Finally, proper pay! Unfortunately, it more means managing your coworkers than the corpses. You’re allowed to sign off on the higher level decisions and have more responsibility, but you didn’t get into this role to do people management. Maybe there’s another path you can take…"
Level 7 - Trainee Embalmer - 12:00 until 21:00, M-F, 50 simoleans p/h
Description: "Back to the classroom you go! Sort of. You’ve put in an application to train as an embalmer, and are splitting your time between shadowing one of your senior coworkers and attending night school. It’s long and tiring, with late study hours for not much money, but it’ll pay off in the long run (you hope)."
Level 8 - Qualified Embalmer - 09:00 until 16:00, M-F, 200 simoleans p/h
Description: "The graft has paid off, and you’ve got another diploma under your belt (as well as a bit more cash, thank the Watcher). You’ve transferred back to the hospital mortuary but this time to work as an embalmer, washing and taking care of bodies and taking all the steps to make sure they’re preserved with the right chemicals. It’ll require careful technique with not only the embalming fluid and syringes, but also your empathy; you’ll need to make sure the family, as well as their loved one, are well cared for."
Level 9 - Mobile Embalmer - 18:00 until 03:00, Mon/Tue/Fri/Sat/Sun, 220 simoleans p/h
Description: "For some reason, embalming isn’t a sought after job – which means good news for you! Work is dispatching you all across SimNation to provide your services, from vampire attacks in Bridgeport to meteor strikes in Lunar Lakes. You’re spending more time in hotels than at home, and while you’re raking in the money, maybe it’s time you struck out on your own."
Level 10 - Locum Mortuary Technician - 11:00 until 15:00, Mon/Sat/Sun, 500 simoleans p/h
Description: "You’ve had enough of the corpo grind and chucked it in; you’re freelance, baby! As a fully qualified mortuary technician and embalmer, you pick up agency shifts and choose when and where you want to work, on whatever catches your eye. If someone wants to pay you good money to preserve the corpse of Bigfoot for their collection, now you don’t have to turn them down for something more sensible. After all, if you love your job, you don’t work a day in your life!"

Carmen Miranda - The Brazilian Bombshell
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carmen Miranda (born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha in Marco de Canaveses, Porto on February 9, 1909 – 5 August 1955) was a Portuguese-born Brazilian singer. Nicknamed "The Brazilian Bombshell", she was known for her sass and signature fruit hat outfit that she wore in her American films.
Miranda was introduced to a composer while working at her family's inn, and she soon recorded her first single ("Não vá Simbora") in 1929.  She then signed a two-year contract with Rádio Mayrink Veiga, the most popular Brazilian station of the 1930s. Her rise to stardom in Brazil was linked to the growth of a native style of music: the samba.
At the invitation of US show business impresario, Lee Shubert, who saw her perform in Rio's Cassino da Urca, she came to Broadway and starred in hit musicals: The Streets of Paris and Sons o' Fun.
Her fame grew quickly, and she was formally presented to President Franklin D. Roosevelt at a White House banquet shortly after her arrival in the US.
When news of Broadway's latest star (known as the Brazilian Bombshell) reached Hollywood, Twentieth Century-Fox offered her a contract in 1941. Her most memorable film performances are in the musical numbers of films such as Week-End in Havana (1941) and The Gang's All Here (1943).
After World War II, Miranda's films at Fox were produced in black-and-white, indicative of Hollywood's diminishing interest in her. As a result, Miranda decided to produce her own films to limited success. Although her film career was faltering, her musical career remained solid and she was still a popular nightclub attraction. She continued to tour the US, Europe, and Latin America.
After filming a segment for the NBC variety series The Jimmy Durante Show, where complained of feeling unwell, she died at home from a heart attack. She was 46 years old.
Legacy:
Chosen by former Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas as a goodwill ambassador in the United States
Was the first contract singer in Brazilian radio history; subsequently, the highest-paid radio singer in Brazil in the 1930s
Was Hollywood's highest-paid entertainer and the top female taxpayer in the US in 1945, earning more than $200,000 that year
Has a museum in Rio de Janeiro, Museu Carmen Miranda, established in her honor in 1976
Received the Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique Grande Oficial, a Portuguese order of knighthood, in 1995
Has a square in Hollywood named Carmen Miranda Square with a ceremony headed by honorary mayor of Hollywood Johnny Grant and attended by Brazilian consul general Jorió Gama in 1998
Was one of 500 stars nominated for the American Film Institute's 50 greatest screen legends in 1999
Honored by the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro in 2005 and the Latin America Memorial in São Paulo in 2006 with a Carmen Miranda Forever exhibit to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her death
Bestowed the Ordem do Mérito Cultural by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil in 2009
Was a part of a set of commemorative US Postal Service Latin Music Legends stamps, painted by Rafael Lopez, in 2011
Honored in the 2016 Summer Olympics closing ceremony with a tribute
Was the first Latin American star to be invited to leave hand and footprints in the courtyard of Grauman's Chinese Theatre
Was the first South American honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to motion pictures in 1960, located at 6262 Hollywood Boulevard

this is easily my most self indulgent train of thought re:troll bio but...
i've been reading more about siphonophores (for a portuguese man o' war sonic oc obviously) and i've been captivated by this concept of a colonial organism whose constituent parts are in essence actually the same organism. which is to say; while a typical biological colony consists of a multitude of related but genetically distinct organisms (i.e. animals of the same species but not clones), a portuguese man o' war is a colony of genetically identical animals, all born from the same source, who simply take on different shapes in order to serve different purposes in the colony (digestive, reproductive, locomotive, etc.)
and in the past i've talked as well about how much i love the idea that the inside of a troll reflects the world around them in that, just as on alternia the line between machine and organism is blurred, the dissection of a troll might have trouble distinguishing between "organ" and "parasite". where a human has stomach bacteria, a troll has stomach mites; or even a mite for a stomach, a centipede where a mammal's intestines would go. and like gut bacteria, this microbiome changes as the eras pass; diets shift, medicine evolves, and the ecosystem grows. but is this a truly "natural" change in gut flora? or is it a form of cyborgism? where does the microbiome end and the techno-macrobiome begin? indeed, if the troll itself is a parasite that attaches itself to a lusus, so then is the troll race a mixed colony organism? but i digress...
maybe you see where i'm going with this. we know trolls are born from a slurry formed from the genetic material of every single mature member of their race. the legend goes that if two trolls are fated partners, their genes will find each other and overpower all else, but even in this perfect scenario a troll egg can never just be "a" troll egg. sometimes a human finds themselves sharing a womb with another human and is forced to absorb their twin to survive, but how does a troll survive when they share a sac with dozens, hundreds of their ilk?
we know that troll infanthood is brutal; the first theatre of many in a warrior's long, violent life. but even before a larva has mandibles to bite, legs to grasp, spinnerets to choke, perhaps there's another avenue toward survival entirely? we know, too, that trolls are social insects whose bodies pupate into a myriad of different castes and morphs to best serve the specific niche in the colony which needs filling. some become armored drones, built not for warring with the colony's enemies but for picking off aberrations within the colony itself; others never pupate at all, but become larger and larger grubs until their limbs are powerless to relocate their cavern-sized egg chambers. but would you consider morphing even further beyond recognition if it was your one chance at survival? would you become just a small part of a colony organism led by a grub with stronger genes if it meant you could perform even a small role in the hive? would you compromise, if it meant you didn't have to fight? would you become a stomach mite? would you become an intestinal centipede? would you become an organ-parasite whose sole purpose is digestion, reproduction, locomotion?

Barbara Bedford (Cinderella of the Hills)—no propaganda submitted
Beatriz Costa (Aldeia da Roupa Branca, A Song of Lisbon)— She was at one point the biggest celebrity in Portugal, a true star. She was one of the biggest figures of the so-called golden era of Portuguese cinema and she also did a lot of theatre and was a chorus girl and a dancer in lots of places. It's said that everyone was charmed by her wits and intelligence and she was friends with a lot of the biggest figures in art and literature. She sang like this [linked song. editor's note: the editor is unfortunately monolingual as fuck so can't tag this for warnings. enjoy the song but go forth w caution as per usual]

So, this one time back in 2009 or so I went to the mall with my friends in Belo Horizonte and we wanted to watch a movie. So we bought snacks at the mall and went to the movie theatre and the lady at the box office demanded our ID cards to make sure we were all 14 or older. Fair enough.
"I don't have an ID card," I explained in perfect Portuguese, "I'm a tourist. I moved to Canada when I was 10 and I'm just visiting."
The lady wouldn't believe me.
So we had to go find my mom (who was also at the mall) to come and vouch for me.
Except the lady wouldn't believe her either.
"She's my daughter and she's well over 14, you can't just deny her a ticket for no good reason!"
My mom spent a good 10 minutes arguing with the lady, accusing her of being bigoted because I'm short. (I was actually 18 at the time, but I have a back problem that makes me really short).
The lady said she'd only sell me a ticket if my mom bought herself a ticket too.
A couple days later my friends and I were at the mall again and wanted to watch a movie. The same lady was at the ticket booth. When she asked me for my ID I handed her a copy of my Canadian passport.
She stared at it for a solid 30 seconds before quietly going "You're the one I wouldn't sell a ticket to, aren't you?"
