I LOVE THE TRADGEDY OF A COMEDIC CHARACTER! so funny so silly, who could ever take him seriously? when the reaction to grief can be so overblown and strange, its hard not to laugh! because wheres the line, really? we're just here to have fun! i look forward to the day this guy snaps! its gonna be REALLY FUNNY i tell ya hwat!!!

A Body is an Empty House

Another #samweek fic, cross-posted from AO3. Takes place somewhere vaguely post-season seven. This work contains mentions of possession, the Cage, and past mental health crises. Warning for strong themes of dissociation; prompt was "Trauma."

The mirror stops him short, sometimes. He’ll walk into a bathroom—in a motel, in a gas station, in some shitty middle-american diner—and he won’t see himself standing there. It’s not like he sees someone else, exactly. It’ll be his hair, the ridge of his nose, the little scar under his chin from when he tried shaving with his dad’s knife; it just feels like he’s not the one piloting it. It’s stupid, he knows. He’s wrestled it back from everyone who’s tried to take him for a joyride—he knows he has. But every once in a while he’ll meet his eyes in the mirror and it’s like he’s in the backseat again with Lucifer at the wheel, talking to his own face through the mirror and watching his arms move around without him.

Hell, sometimes he thinks—sometimes he remembers—sometimes he imagines that version of himself that went walking around while he was in the Cage, stuck in there screaming like he did, and—he knows that’s bullshit. Knows that was him, too, that he didn't take something's place when he slipped back in. Knows that it's his skin and he's the only one in it. But. It just doesn’t feel like him in the mirror, is all.

He wouldn’t tell Dean about it, obviously. Not after everything, after the hospital. He’s supposed to be better now, and he knows that, too. So he keeps it to himself that he isn’t. It’s not like Dean would have anything to say, anyway. He knows by now that there’s no way to fix it; if Cas couldn’t suck this out with the rest of it, nothing can.

It just doesn't feel like him, is all.

Like, he’ll meet his eyes for a second and if he doesn’t stop and think about it the devil's staring back at him, or he’ll catch his reflection smiling as he passes a window and he’ll remember the way his mouth pulled when it was Meg making his lips curl, or—it’s stupid. He knows it’s him. He knows it, and the feeling doesn’t matter. How he feels about it doesn’t matter. There’s just what is. And what is is one person moving his body around, and that person is him. There’s no other version of him left without his soul, there’s no traces of Lucifer left in his sinew (and he’d know; he scrubs his skin down to the bone to make sure). It’s just him, in the mirror.
