Manipulating Modern Polaroid Pictures
Over the past few months I have been working on figuring out what ways to best manipulate modern Polaroid photos. I think from the things that I have tried and documented I have figured out some techniques that yield good results.
This is the first attempt at a Polaroid emulsion manipulation that I tried:
And this is an example of a more well done manipulation that I have done:
Another example using black and white film:
Of all of the things I tried I found heat helped with the manipulation the most. A source that I found useful was a 40 watt incandescent bulb, but prior to that I attempted to use a slightly warm LED lightbulb. I imagine using something like a hair dryer would work well as well but I have not tried. For the time after the photo has been taken that is best to heat up the photo and apply the manipulation depends on type of film. I find the best time for a color photo to be manipulated is right after the opacifier has completely disappeared. For black and white photos I find that if you manipulate a photo at least 2 hours and up to 3 days after the photo has been taken(these are the times I have attempted) the image is fairly manipulable with heat applied to it like the black and white example photo.
To manipulate the photos I used clay tools, part of an arm of a pair of glasses, and the wide flat end of a pair of tweezers pressing into the picture.
