Rumpleteazer was in gargantuan, absolutely no good trouble, as per usual, but - also as per usual - she had a plan to get out of it. Or half of a plan, anyway.

It was simple, really - all she had to do was catch Skimbleshanks before he had a chance to hear the business from anyone else, and she'd be able to use her incredible powers of obfuscation and persuasion to convince him that it wasn't her fault, and she'd been home the entire time, and that they actually had the wrong cat entirely, funny enough, and…and…

If she hurried, she would definitely maybe manage to at least avoid a complete, catastrophic meltdown. Word travelled so quickly on this side of town that it wasn’t uncommon for her to find her father already tapping his heel and waiting for an explanation before she even had a chance to slip through the cat door. Rumpleteazer found herself begrudgingly amazed at how often he could just tell something had gone awry before she'd even had a chance to process it. Alas, those sorts of powers of deduction were - frankly, if you asked her - wasted on such tightly wound a clock as her father.

Skimbleshanks’ little nook wasn’t too far from where Rumpleteazer was, and the streets were clearing out for the evening, so there wasn’t a lot of foot traffic and the paths were open - no suspicion or interruption of a cute little cat making her big old dangerous way in the dark. Plus, she knew at least three shortcuts thanks to Mungojerrie; all she had to do was run as fast as kittycat possible and she’d make perfect time, and perhaps avoid that snap of the overwound spring she was bound to run into if she was a second too late.

Mungojerrie himself had already bolted to his mothers before the you-know-what had even hit the fan, looking as though the blood had collectively drained from his body all at once. And, really, she couldn’t blame him for that. Skimbleshanks may have had a few too many cows for a cat his size, but he could occasionally (occasionally) be reasonable if she really pushed for it. Jennyanydots was fit to have the entire barn when she found out; maybe the coop alongside it if Jerrie didn’t get to her first to cushion the blow. Best to smooth that out as soon as possible; that in mind, she wasn't too sore that she'd been left a few extra moments in the hole of their own making, a hair shy from the flood light's accusing glow. Gave her time to think.

A couple extra seconds could really be worth the world in their line of...work.

Speaking of getting to something first, she had made it just around the last corner to her destination. Rumpleteazer clucked, pleased with the realization. When she'd been a much younger kitten, the distance to her father had always seemed like such an insurmountable thing (even moreso when he was gone, leaving her with whomever was available to look after her). Her first independent walks back and forth had stretched on what seemed like forever, Teazer looping her tail in a plea for the sunset to stretch on just a few minutes longer - to ward off the darkness for just one more corner - just so she could see the street until she found her way home again (she wasn't afraid of the dark, no sir). It never worked, unfortunately for her, but she kept stubbornly on - just as was in her blood. And, no matter how long it was, that stubbornness always ended with the same figure of a tom waiting for her (and how he'd always managed to be there around his schedule was no short of a wonder), outlined in golden light, ushering her inside. "That's my girl," he'd murmur, proud and warm. "Well done."

The traitorous little voice inside of her wondered when the last time he'd said that to her was.

As she'd gotten a bit older, the physical distance shrunk exponentially (because she'd grown bigger, duh), but she'd noticed that the abstract distance between the two of them seemed to be steadily growing in its place. Funny, since she'd once thought her da would likely never stop his constant hovering over her shoulder to ensure her safety, or fretting over where she'd head off to and who'd she be heading off with, or ticking through that never-ending laundry list of questions he carried around with him at all times. If he had his way, Rumpleteazer was half convinced he would be having her fill out timesheets and incident reports; or at least still carrying her around by the scruff of her neck so she wouldn't wander too far from him.

Maybe the distance was a teeny bit her fault - but when she'd snapped at him to leave her alone, that she was too big now for coddling, she hadn't really expected him to actually…leave her alone.

Though, she supposed, Skimbleshanks was nothing if not a cat of his word. Perhaps she should have seen it coming.

But now was not the time for melancholy paw wringing and "woe is me"ing - that was for later, when her tail wasn't on the chopping block.

Quickly, she adjusted her collar and tore the pearls from her neck (those'd prompt too many "My, my, where ever did you find those?"s that she did not have time for), stashing them beneath the decorative station bushes with a mournful promise to return to them later, should they not catch the eye of a sticky feathered bird. She licked her paws and smoothed her fur and whiskers as best she could without a reflection, sighing hard so her voice wouldn't sound like she'd been running several blocks. A couple of false starts later, and her shoulders were properly squared and her rehearsed excuse (and a backup) sat just on the tip of her tongue. All the more picture of a proper queen was she. Presentation was half the battle, Mungojerrie would say, and her da did appreciate propriety.

With a final deep breath, she slipped through the hidden entrance, mouth already half open with her explanation -

"Dad!" the familiar voice of Tumblebrutus suddenly whined (that one was always whining, it seemed), freezing Rumpleteazer in her tracks.

For Cat's sake; she'd neglected to consider the other half of her family's presence in her grand master plan. Whole new audience meant the previous strategy and backups was effectively useless. Some mastermind she was. Didn't even account for the possibility it'd be the other one.

It’s not like she spent most of her time around Skimbleshanks’ cubby anymore anyway; she was a big queen with her own places to go most evenings and her very own pet's house - there wasn't much need. And in her defense to the court, it was a relatively new development. The two of them being around these parts all the time, anyway.

Asparagus had been around them since before she could even remember, just on the blurry outskirts of her vision. From everything she could recollect, he'd always been nice to her, and shown her new things, even when she made the little vein at his temple pulse and "wore his nerves to the threads"; and, perhaps more important than that, he'd seemed to make her father happy, which was good enough for her to justify his presence. If she thought hard enough, Rumpleteazer very vaguely recalled sitting up on his back, waving eagerly at the trains coming in, being held very gingerly by the scruff of her neck so she wouldn't fall. That's da! she'd insist at every one, to which he would pointedly remind her about reading her numbers.

She would demand everyone who watched her to take her down to that station in the morning, come to think of it, at least until she decidedly grew out of it. But it seemed most often it would be him and her on that stoop, waiting, Asparagus glaring rather pointedly at the gaggle of humans that were always there as well should they circle too close to her vicinity and plucking her neatly from tumbling down the storm drain. It was consistently enough that she remembered it, anyway.

The gremlin, however, was new and not as welcome. He came along with the package later down the line, like a stubborn security tag on a pair of dangly earrings (and Teazer did so love her dangly earrings). She very easily could have gone the rest of her life without that one.

She scrambled quietly back against the wall.

Asparagus was lounging nearest the back corner to the right, with said little gremlin stretched between his forepaws, begrudgingly submitting to his father's ministrations. If she stayed just under the shadow of the overhang, they likely wouldn't be able to see her from this angle. She thought, anyway.

"I'm too old for a bath," she heard her brother mutter as he continued to squirm, sending his little shadow dancing against the wall.

"Last time I checked, you don't grow out of baths," Asparagus retorted. "Especially when you won't do it yourself. Now hold still."

Plans dashed, but potential confrontation delayed (and looking to completely avoid the issue), Rumpleteazer considered turning right back around and leaving. Couldn't miss what was never there; she could act like she'd been out all night (which she figured would mean less disappointment) and rush off to catch Skimbleshanks somewhere else. She had all but had her two front paws back through the door when her father chanced a look up from what he was doing (or perhaps chanced a look up to avoid being elbowed in the nose, who could say?).

"Rumpleteazer? Is that you?" Asparagus called. He sounded surprised to see her (which was a testament she really didn't feel like unpacking at the moment). Said queen, frozen in place at having been caught, slowly turned to face him, mind already clicking away on a new course of action as she plastered a fake smile from ear to ear.

"Hey, Rags," she chirped nervously, clutching her paws behind her back.

Asparagus' answering smile was somewhat bewildered. "Welcome back. We weren't expecting you to visit for a while y - oh, no you don't!" He held fast to Tumble who attempted to crawl away at the distraction. The tomkit pouted, glaring daggers up at her.

"Yeah, well…well y'know..." Teazer trailed off, struggling to keep her tail from twitching. Really selling her case - she was losing time. "Where's da?"

Asparagus tilted his head. "You just missed him, I'm afraid. He's gone for the evening."

Shit.

"I beg your pardon?"

Rumpleteazer snapped her jaw shut, wholly unaware she’d spoken out loud. Tumblebrutus snickered, mouthing the word under his whiskers, and Asparagus frowned - all in rapid, disappointing succession.

None of this was going even remotely to plan.

"Perhaps you're lucky your da isn't home," Asparagus deadpanned, tugging lightly on Tumblebrutus' ear as a warning, who yelped and grabbed it back from him. Serves him right. "I'm sure he'd have something to say about your mouths."

"Sorry," they muttered in unison. As it was, the only thing they consistently managed to agree on.

Asparagus observed the queen's face, noting her posture. "Are you alright? Did something happen?" Not what have you done, now?, mind you, did something happen? Rumpleteazer was unsure if he was giving her an out or was genuinely concerned.

As it was, her rapid fire mind had settled to a sudden, shameful lull at the scolding (and the smallest modicum of guilt), leaving her briefly and dangerously exposed. "Yes."

"'Yes' something happened?"

"No!" she chirped immediately, snapping her head back up, refusing to be caught in the familiar verbal roundabout that would get her admitting to things. Asparagus may be clever - too clever sometimes- but he was no match for the sheer force of will she was willing to exude to escape the figurative fisherman's net. She didn't have a lot of time. "Nothing happened. Yes, I'm fine."

Asparagus slowly blinked at her, looking not at all convinced, but seemingly weighing out the consequences of calling her out on her lie. A tense moment passed, before he settled on a new approach.

"You know, Teazer, you can tell me whatever it is. I'm sure we can figure it out." He pointedly left off the generous offer that it would be their secret, like he would when she was very little and he somehow managed to make things disappear under the rug with a wink and a smile, but Teazer still heard its tail ends. Asparagus had always been good that way, so long as whatever it was wasn't...well, fully illegal.

...And she'd helped clean it up, whatever it was. He wasn't a complete pushover.

Still, something about disappointing both of the toms she considered her parents in the same evening didn't exactly sound like a thrilling prospect; one at a time.

"It's nothing - honest, it's nothing," she insisted, bouncing on her heels, suddenly uncomfortable and wishing she just...hadn't come at all. It was too much all at once. "I just wanted to talk to da."

Asparagus gave her a sympathetic look, though it looked to be a second thought covering whatever first came to mind (she could guess well enough what it was). "Miss him, do you?"

Tumblebrutus rubbed absently at his ears, turning to gauge her reaction to that. Now both toms were staring at her with matching, window pale eyes. It would be a little creepy, if you asked her, were she not so familiar with it.

Rumpleteazer pressed her muzzle in a thin, firm smile. That wasn't...exactly the sentiment, but it hit very firmly just beneath her breast anyway. No, that wasn't it at all. She'd needed to catch up to him to plead her case, that was all. She wasn't a kitten running to her parent when trouble hit - she was a grown queen on a mission to avoid the consequences of her actions and that particularly guilt inducing look he'd always give her when she'd really done it that time.

And, funny enough, the only thing that kept passing her mind was how he hadn't even said goodbye - that she hadn't even been around to hear one.

Asparagus sighed, long and loud, bringing Rumpleteazer violently back to the present. He looked withdrawn; if she could say nothing else of him, he knew when to pick his battles. "He should be back tomorrow morning."

"Yeah...yeah, okay," she muttered, backing up a pace. Something unpleasant was bubbling under her skin and every instinct was pushing her to run off

Just like always.

"Why don't you stay?" Asparagus asked hastily, eying how she continued inching away. "Let me just finish up here, and we can eat - I'm sure you're hungry, aren't you?"

And, in reality, Rumpleteazer was hungry. She couldn't remember if she'd eaten that day - she and Jerrie had been working on their plan for the better part of three days, and sometimes trivial things like eating would completely slip her mind. Really, there was no harm at all in staying the evening and eating and waiting for her father with the rest of her family. It might even be a nice change of pace, like it was before, and not like there was much to be done. But Rumpleteazer's brain was itching inside of her skull; she had to leave so she could fix everything. That was best for everyone.

"No, no that's alright, dad." She noted the slight jump in expression, just as she thought the name would invoke. It had been a more common utterance when she was a kitten - and, for the life of her, she can't recall why she'd stopped.

"I'll be back, though, I promise!" Rumpleteazer continued in a rush, as though keeping ahead of her thoughts, drowning them out, would strangle the persistent melancholy that threatened to take hold. She darted her gaze away so she wouldn't catch any disappointment. Even Tumblebrutus looked...well about as concerned as he was wont to be towards her. "Maybe next weekend?"

"Very well," Asparagus said eventually, looking...not hurt, she didn't think, but something in the same vicinity. "I'll let your father know."

"Thanks." She wiggled her way out the door, pausing only a moment to glance back. "I'll...I'll see you later. Goodnight!"

Rumpleteazer was out the door and down the street before she'd realized there'd been no goodnight in return, and she'd left her pearls tangled sadly in the bushes.

Asparagus continued to stare at the doorflap, watching the last flick of Rumpleteazer's tail disappear as it swung back and forth. He heaved a sigh, feeling a sudden pressure deep in his chest that he couldn't quite place.

"She's in big trouble," the tom kitten observed from beneath his chin, staring after where his sister had bustled off. There was a certain smugness in the announcement, but Asparagus could hear the beginning shades of begrudging awe and admiration in his tone. Not exactly a thrilling prospect of influence, but at least it suggested...some sort of fondness on his behalf.

"Mm hmm," he agreed, finally letting the tomkitten free from his grasp. He wasn't finished, but the chances of him ever finishing had set sail the moment it'd been interrupted. No matter; he was mostly clean, anyway, and Asparagus felt...trouble settling heavily in his stomach. Tumblebrutus took full advantage, scrambling up and away, leaning over to peer back at his father upside down.

"Is she going to be grounded?" he asked innocently. Asparagus wished it were that simple.

“Depends,” he murmured, feeling - he thought - how it must feel to be heading very quickly towards a wall without being able to stop. There was something on the horizon, he could feel it, he just couldn't put his paw exactly on what. "We'll wait until your father comes home. See what he has to say about it."

Asparagus hoped he had something to say about it - anything at all, at this point.

Relationships in the 2021 US tour

No relationships in Cats are set in stone, and every production does things a bit differently—although some are more common or official than others! So here's what we've collected so far from actors' comments about the relationships between characters in the 2021 US tour.

Under a cut so it can be expanded as we go. If I've missed one, let me know—but with a link please! Sources are key.

Alonzo x Demeter: A cute friendship which Lauren enjoys playing (X); and/or Demeter is Alonzo's onstage crush (X).

Bombalurina x Rumpelteazer: Rumpelteazer loves Bombalurina and wants to be her (X).

Bombalurina x Demeter: They're basically a single unit when it comes to looking after the kittens (X). They enjoy their character interactions, and Lauren refers to Chelsea's Bomba as her 'bae' (X X).

Bombalurina x Grizabella: Used to be best friends (X); plus here's Grizabella's backstory as told by Chelsea (X).

Demeter x Macavity: She loves Munkustrap but thinks Macavity is hot (X), and enjoys exploring Demeter's conflicted emotions during the Macavity fight (X). They have a past together, which she has only recently escaped, and to Macavity she is the one that got away (X).

Demeter x Mistoffelees: They love each other and enjoy the time they spend together during Skimbleshanks' song (X).

Demeter x Munkustrap: "Cute little romance", according to Bomba (X). Demeter loves Munkustrap but thinks Macavity is hot (X). They agree that they are cute, and also prone to onstage giggle-fits together (X). Their moment together after the Macavity fight is sweet and wholesome for them (X). Lauren said that Demeter's journey involves learning to be brave and love again - it's possible she means forming new relationships within the tribe in general, or specifically loving Munkustrap (X). At one point she referred to Sillabub as their daughter, but it's not clear whether that's literal or just 'we treat her like ours' (X).

Demeter x Sillabub: Though she's new to the tribe and learning to trust/love again, 'Auntie Demmy' spends a lot of time with Sillabub and Victoria, has bonded with them, and protects them (X). Later, Lauren referred to Sillabub as Demeter's and Munkustrap's daughter (X).

Demeter x Tantomile: Best friends! (X)

Demeter x Victoria: Though she's new to the tribe and learning to trust/love again, 'Auntie Demmy' spends a lot of time with Sillabub and Victoria, has bonded with them, and protects them (X).

Mistoffelees x Munkustrap: Paul loves Munkustrap and feels that he and Misto are close, they communicate and interact a lot (X).

Mistoffelees x Plato: Mistoffelees loves Plato's tenderness for Victoria.

Mistoffelees x Pouncival: Mistoffelees loves Pounce's energy and sees a bit of himself in him (X).

Mistoffelees x Rumpelteazer: Paul loves Rumpelteazer and the energy she brings to the tribe - the same may or may not apply to Paul's character (X).

Mistoffelees x Tugger: Zach and Paul have no qualms about using the word 'Tuggoffelees' (X, X); Tugger might 'low-key play everyone' but Mistoffelees is the one for him (X); Tugger is possibly bi but definitely queer, and loves Mistoffelees (X). Mistoffelees loves his moments with Tugger (X).

Mistoffelees x Victoria: They are close, but not siblings (X).

Mungojerrie x Rumpelteazer: May be adopted into the tribe - though this might be a joke. Even if we take it seriously, no word so far on whether this means they're related to each other or if they just bonded over being outsiders in the tribe. Kelly also refers to Max as her 'work husband', which suggests that they consider them as canonically a couple on the same level as Skimbledots.

Munkustrap x Rumpelteazer: Munk is 'too easy for her to mess with' (X).

Munkustrap x Sillabub: Sillabub may be Demeter's and Munkustrap's daughter (X).

Munkustrap x Tugger: 'Brothers for sure' (X); in fact, brothers 'for Jellicle life' (X).

Plato x Victoria: He's very tender with her, and his actor calls him 'Prince Charming' (X).

Rumpelteazer x Victoria: Both actors are playfully coy about the idea (X X).

Skimbleshanks x Tugger: Skimble and Jenny may be Tugger's uncle and aunt (X) or parents (X), and they consider him the problem child.

Sillabub x Victoria: Besties on and offstage (X); and, with Cassandra, they form the three Jellicle musketeers! (X)

Tugger x chorus Tugger (Bill Bailey): 'Bill Bailey' is Tugger's previous Jellicle life: he went to the Heavyside Layer because he wasn't really living his full life and came back as Tugger, who is "the outcome of true happiness and being free" (X).

Tugger x Victoria: Half joking and not really in character, but: Tugger loves her, she loves him and wants to be him (X)!

I’ve decided to used Letterboxd again for list-making purposes! I’ve decided to do some recommendations by decade, so here’s my picks for the 100 films of the 2010s I think are must-watch experiences. It’s a mix of my own bias as well as what’s objectively great so keep that in mind.

I’ve gotta say, if you knew where to look the 2010s had insane variety. There were also a lot of franchises, but most of them were pretty good. The best films here are always the most stylish or with clear direction; Taika Waititi, James Gunn, Robert Eggers and more all really made their mark with solid entries. This was a great decade for Keanu Reeves too, with his big John Wick comeback.

Obviously there were a lot of superhero films but most of them I don’t think were really worth putting on with only a few exceptions. Infinity War and Endgame are on here, but it’s more for the sheer spectacle and the former’s use of its villain; I think most of the other superhero films are overall better.

Sad to say there wasn’t really any “so bad it’s good” films I felt warranted making the list. As much as I personally love Cats and think Skimbleshanks is the greatest character in history, I think it’s still too soon to see if the film has left an impact. Same thing with The VelociPastor, an intentionally bad movie that nearly made the cut.

Another close one was Annihilation. Great movie, and I love Natalie Portman, but Color Out OC Space technically came out in 2019 and I think that movie is a lot better, a lot creepier, and more cohesive (plus it has Nicolas Cage).

Obviously I couldn’t see every film of the decade so if there’s something you think I missed out on, let me know! Maybe I’ll check it out. And I hope if you haven’t seen some of these films, you’ll check them out yourselves!

Cats 2019 😌

Oh, thank you, I’m gonna gush about this movie without even a DROP of that “i knoooow it’s bad” stuff, y’all know that I know. Okay maybe a few drops sneak in, in a back handed way, but MOSTLY this is me gushing and fawning

For context, since i’m putting this in the tag, the prompt was this was somebody gives me a topic and I respond with what i like about it. Like, the opposite of that “send me a thing and i’ll tell you what i hate about it” one

sometimes, like half the time, the CGI actually slaps. like, the close ups are amazing. proper look at some of these cats and it’s like, wow

mr. mistoffelees is precious. he’s my favourite and he’s adorable and his song makes me cry! specifically the bit where old deut is back and it cuts to his happy “oh my gosh i did it” face. triumphant! heck, i just like that whole song, as like the character thing that it is. and yeah anyways, misto is a cutie pie, he’s so shy and awkward and nervous, i wuv him uwuwu

misto is my fave but munkustrap is actually the best character in this movie. i cannot gush enough about robbie fairchild’s acting, singing and dancing in this. he is the backbone of this movie and i adore him! there’s a reason i’ve reblogged a bagillion gifsets of him being so expressionate, he’s so good! you can tell robbie loves being a part of this. and like, very often munku will absolutely be the best aspect of a scene

plus he’s beautiful too. munku, misto, victoria. beautiful kitties

now that i’ve adjusted to the art style, i find these kitties adorable. i love the ears and tails, they make me happy. i like how misto’s tail curls and the movement of everybody’s ears

i really like the music, shoulda mentioned that first. like, when its good, its really good. memory is of course a powerhouse. skimbleshanks is the movie’s highlight, so fucking good. i like mr. misto’s song, fight me. jellicle cats is a fucking bop. rumpleteazer & mungojerrie, I Just Like It. robbie’s performance in... well the whole movie... but also in old deuteronomy is beautiful and soothing. i’ve actually gotten every song in this stuck in my head.... SKIIIIIMBLEEEESHAAAANKS THE RAAAAILWAAAY CAT

legit, making that number include tap dancing was an actual stroke of genius and i cannot praise steven mcrae enough. whomst is also australian, im so proud. i also like skimble’s pants

OH ALSO regarding the music, another thing i love about this movie is that it introduced me to the concept of this musical. i never had any exposure to cats the musical before this movie happened. all i knew before was a couple of references i saw and i had heard memory. but i didn’t know that memory was from cats. and like, think of all the great songs i wouldn’t be aware of if this movie never happened. i’ve also, by extension, become enamoured with the 1998 version of cats too. because of this! i wouldn’t have had a reason to care before! i had no interest! so besides the fact that i actually do like this movie, there’s that

this is true of the stage musical thing, but a lot of cute and fun character moments are gleaned from like background stuff and facial expressions, that sorta thing and i find it really fun to notice stuff (or see somebody else point stuff out). like it’s all very simple but still with some depth, ya know?

the dancing in this is so good. so so good. especially munku because his actor is a magnificent dancer. it’s also funny and cute how misto clearly isn’t as good a dancer as everybody else, so they have him doing clumsy doofy stuff in the background. but im not insulting laurie davidson’s dancing, he’s actually good considering he had to learn for this movie. i just have to praise the dancing in this movie because i’ve seen people say that “the dancing isn’t impressive in this movie because it’s CGI” and i WILL EAT YOU WHOLE. no n no no people HAVE to know that the actors are actually doing that. robbie and francesca are professional ballet dancers, most of the people in this are. the movements are real, they just painstakingly overlayed CGI cat stuff over it. the stuff that isn’t real is like, stuff humans can’t do, like the big fuck off leaps, they used wires for that

victoria, misto and munku are OT3 and they’re bicons in my heart

oh i already mentioned the music but i just wanna say i think beautiful ghosts is a lovely song/motif/character thing. i haven’t mentioned victoria much, i think she’s rather sweet in a like endearingly dumb way. and her singing and dancing is, of course, lovely

the sets are practical, they built that! bruh

i have to give my respect to the poor overworked effects artists who worked on this movie. they were pushed so hard and for so long and i think they did a great job and they don’t deserve even a drop of the scorn they have received

i love misto’s jacket, it’s so good. and the pencil as a wand is clever!

the last scene is refered to as a living hell by a lot of people but i love it because just. watch munku’s face the whole time. so good. just watch munkustrap, he makes everything better

ooh on that note, i like how they made it so munk lives in a flat thats literally right by the junkyard. i find that a nice touch and fitting

i like the nuzzles <3 (furthermore i love how misto is so much taller than victoria so he has to bend down so far for a couple of those nuzzles)

i dunno, you can tell most of the people doing this were like really into it, like really loved doing this movie. like these performances are good, y’all! and like, these cats come across as so happy to hanging out and dancing and being together (for the most part, there is bickering and... cattiness too) that it’s like infectious. it makes me smile!

and there’s like a bagillion little things here and there that i like, like my list could go on even more. for example, shout out to that one cat that kept smiling when skimble was spinning upwards into the air (due to being kidnapped) probably under the assumption that skimble can just fucking do that djksakjdsa

so yeah i can’t exactly call this a Good Movie but i can genuinely call it a movie i enjoy, that i adore even, because i’ve never liked anything ironically in my life! also im autistic and this has become my special interest, so choo choo, this trains a chugging. i’m having a lot of fun, and i think that’s good enough

and i feel like it’s already on it’s way to becoming the world’s most expensive cult classic. like, friends getting together and watching it and having a good time, for one reason or another. and i like that. i hope in like 5 to 10 years time, people are gonna be endeared and nostalgic for cats 2019, cuz that’d be neat

Influenced by @white-cat-of-doom, and his Cats dream cast (please check it out), I have made my own.

This is going to be a tough one to figure out, but here is my Cats dream team, as of today.

I wish to see more productions to be better informed in my choices, so I need to get on some bootlegs I guess! (Some choices are actually going to be based off of assumptions of how the actors portray them).

I already know a bunch of my choices are going to be from the Broadway Revival (because I really like that production), and almost all are going to be from newer productions because I am way more familiar with them.

In alphabetical order:

Admetus / Macavity: Thomas Inge (Asia Tour 2017/2020 and UK International Tour 2018/9)

I quite like the Macavity redesign for Vienna 2019 and Asia 2020, so he gets the nod just for this. Otherwise, he is an established Admetus and seems to have fun with it.

Alonzo / Rumpus Cat: Fletcher Dobinson (Asia Tour 2020)

I have never seen him perform as Alonzo, but he has this energy about him I cannot really describe. From short videos I have seen, he seems to have a 'snarky' side, and just has a hell of a time flirting about with everyone during curtain calls. He has the moves.

Bill Bailey / Tumblebrutus: Kolton Krouse (Broadway Revival 2016 / Cats 2019)

They can fly with the best of them. Their flip in with the ball during the end of the Old Gumbie Cat is a cool addition. No strong feelings for this character though.

Bombalurina: Rosemarie Ford (Cats 1998)

If anyone exemplifies what it means to be Bombalurina, I think Rosemarie wins. The duality of caring attitude and scornful nature, combined with her moves and her voice all make her a top pick. Also, slightly older Bombas I feel are better?

Honourable mentions: Christine Cornish Smith (Broadway Revival 2016) for sure, Suzie Melloy (Asia 2017/2020), and Tanya Valenzuela (Mexico 2018).

Carbucketty / Pouncival: Joel Morris (South Africa 2008 / UK Tour 2013 / Palladium 2014 / International Tour 2016)

He does a relatively good job being juvenile, but not annoying in his role. Him screwing around during Tugger's song, Moments Of Happiness, and Skimbleshanks is actually endearing to a point. No strong feelings for this character though.

Cassandra: Mariah Reives (US Tour 6)

Another pick I have never seen during performances, but she looks like a good Cassandra. She is really pretty and appropriately tall, so ¯\_( ツ)_/¯. Bonus points for her lighting up during Misto's song.

Honourable mentions: Jessica Buckby (2013 UK Tour), Danielle Cato (International Tour 2019), and Emily Pynenberg (2016 Broadway Revival)

Coricopat: Corey John Snide (2016 Broadway Revival)

He pairs up very well with my top Tantomile pick, and cannot realistically be separated. This legend was also a dance captain, involved with Cats 2019, and did a split track cover of Coricopat and Jennyanydots during his run.

Demeter: Zizi Strallen (London Revival / Palladium 2014)

Real talk, I love her as Tantomile in Cats 2019, and her singing voice is beautiful and distinct. Her as Demeter is a good bet, and she gives off a happy vibe during less serious points of the show. That happiness she puts in 2019 Tanto is what she did with 2014 Demeter.

Honourable mention: Lisette Pagler (Gothenburg 2006 / Stockholm 2009). The OG grey Demeter. She is absolutely beautiful, and her non-rep portrayal design is neat. She is also an actual singer in Sweden, so her voice is top notch. I really like her as Demeter. Also, Ella Nonini (International Tour / Asia 2020).

Electra: Leah Sue Morland (Cats 1998) or Lili Froehlich (2016 Broadway Revival)

I cannot reasonably pick one over the other, I have disproportionately strong feelings for both. Lili made me fall in love with Electra as a character (and I mean, look who my icon is!), and Leah cemented it before and after me seeing the Broadway Revival. They both make a modest ensemble cat seem so much more important. One of my favourite Cats across any production.

Etcetera: Jo Bingham (Cats 1998)

Boundless energy and happiness rolled into one bouncy cat. No one had a better time during Cats 1998, and for a cat that does not appear in many production afterwards, Jo just said f*ck it and did whatever seemingly came to mind to forge a legacy. Biting Coricopat’s ass remains a landmark moment in cinema. One of my favourite cats in the film without a doubt.

George: Frank Thompson (Cats 1998)

He is sort of always there, enjoying himself. If I would cut a cast member, George would be it. Sorry George.

Gus / Bustopher Jones / Growltiger: Rory Campbell (UK Tour / Zurich / London)

Dignified Busto. A good Gus that does not play off too much about being old and decrepit. If done properly, Growltiger (for the sake of Griddlebone) should make a return to more productions. Remove the total racism and the open misogyny inherent to many portrayals of Growltiger, and make it strictly about the lovers.

Grizabella: Jennifer Hudson (for real) (Cats 2019)

I know this one will ruffle feathers, but her sad sap performance is quite unrivaled in Cats. She brought the gloom and the dejection of being casted out to life. Her singing Memory is powerful as all hell, and filled with emotion. She wins the screaming match.

Jellylorum / Griddlebone: Freya Rowley (Cats 2019)

At this point you are probably thinking, ‘my lord, what the hell is this person on about?’. Freya does not sing in the movie, and is just a background cat, but my god is she the best cat there! During her time with actual stage productions, she was a principle Tantomile, and covered Demeter, Jelly, Jenny, and Cassandra as swing. I know she can sing (even though I have never heard it), and I want to hear / see her as the most novel Griddlebone around. Big orange energy - get with it.

Honourable mention: Sarah Jean Ford (2016 Broadway Revival)

Jemima: Veerle Casteleyn (Cats 1998 / London / Dutch Tour)

The most vanilla choice, but she was the face of Jemima / Sillabub and the Cats ‘franchise’ when the 98 film first came out, and rocketed her character to great importance and notoriety. They used her for promo shots after the movie came out realizing how popular her character had become. Veerle is the innocence of youth personified. By the way, I am taking her without the overdub.

Honourable mention: Arianna Rosario (2016 Broadway Revival / US Tour 6) and Dawn Williams (UK Tour 2013)

Jennyanydots: Eloise Kropp (2016 Broadway Revival)

A younger Jenny still as wild as any other. Her greater involvement during the show is also cool to see. The changes they made to the Broadway Revival may irk some, but the Gumbie Cat scene with the choreography change is my favourite I have seen so far. Eloise does a really good job, and has a chaotic energy that draws me to her.

Mistoffelees: Laurie Davidson (Cats 2019)

On my pursuit of pissing off the purists, here is another controversial choice. He provides a character development that I think would work out well on stage. Imagine it for a second, with Tugger or Munk hyping him up. No Mistoria though.

Honourable mention: Joseph Poulton (UK Tour 2013 / Palladium 2014)

Munkustrap: Jack Rebaldi (London / Madrid / Paris / Dusseldorf / German Tours)

The man is a serious Munk, who is versatile with his portrayals. He gets so into playing the character, and seems to be having a great time doing it. Plus, how the hell can someone do Munk in English, Spanish, French, and German in the course of three years? Madness.

Honourable mentions: Robbie Fairchild (Cats 2019) and friend-shaped Michael Gruber (Broadway / Cats 1998)

Mungojerrie: Drew Varley (Australia 1993 / London / Cats 1998)

One half of the chaotic duo present in Cats 1998, with an oustanding level of dumbassery and foolishness that encompasses Jerrie. He encapsulates that attitude very well, and pairs perfectly with my top Rumpleteazer.

Honourable mention: Dante Hernandez (Mexico 2013 / 2018)

Old Deuteronomy: Nicholas Pound (London / UK Tours / Palladium 2014 / International Tour)

A bit of a different choice, considering most people would likely pick Ken Page (and for good reason). Mr. Pound has a great voice, and welcoming vibe. Behind the scenes, he is a chaotic Old D. Plus, his name is Dick Pound.

Rum Tum Tugger: John Partridge (UK Tour / London / Cats 1998 / Berlin / Dusseldorf)

Velvety smooth voice, swagger coming out the hip thrust, and a playfulness suitable for the rockstar cat. No contest with this choice. He also does not play of RTT as being childish or over the top (*cough 2016 Broadway Revival / US Tour 6*), which is appreciated. Sorry Tyler Hanes, your vlogs were delightful, but your Tugger was a bit too much.

Rumpleteazer: Jo Gibb (London / Cats 1998)

Jo Gibb is the reason I became super obsessed with Cats, and probably why my favourite character is Rumple. Having initially seen the 2019 movie before the 1998 film, seeing her smiling face and adorable portrayal made me sort of fall in love with her. She is a perfectly mischievous Rumple, and I feel is the benchmark for most others. Her engagements with other characters is awesome, and she is just the ideal actor. Also, Cockney accent Rumple is best Rumple I do not make the rules.

Honourable mentions: Every other Teazer. All of them. There is no bad one. They all have my heart.

Skimbleshanks: Steven McCrae (Cats 2019)

Big daddy Skimble, with the red pants and the moustache. Tap dancing and ballet powerhouse. WOO WOO. Enough said.

Tantomile: Emily Tate (2016 Broadway Revival)

Given all Tantos do not really have an opportunity to set themselves apart because they are more of an ensemble Cat, I liked Emily from the beginning I saw her, and I think she is really cute. Her, paired with CJS, make a pretty ideal Cori and Tanto. Maybe I am swayed by the amount of lifts and spins they do together during the show? They have a beautiful synchronization and grace with their movements.

Weaponize your Tantomiles, helicopter her above your Coricopats and take over. Kill Macavity. Become the Everlasting Cat.

Honourable mention: Kaye Brown (London / UK Tour / Cats 1998), Melody Rose (US Tour 6), Helen Gulston (RCCL Cruise). Realistically, all Tantos are good. I like Tantomile.

Victoria: Georgina Pazcogiun (2016 Broadway Revival)

A prominent soloist with the New York ballet, renowned for her distinctive style, and you can appreciate that if you watched a 2016 bootleg show. She has also pushed out against ballet norms by being "The Rogue Ballerina" as a means of embracing the qualities that make her unique as a dancer, such as her 'bigger' (in terms of ballet) body type. Her unique style as Victoria makes her my choice. Plus, she be sneaky.

Honourable mentions: Hannah Kenna Thomas (UK Tour 2013 / Palladium 2014 / International Tour / Vienna Revival), Tyler Lotzof (Asia Tour 2020), Alicia Beck (UK Tour 2013), Phyllida Crowley Smith (London / Cats 1998). Realistically, all Vics are good.

My Favorite Cats Ships

Okie dokie, @whitmerule wanted to know my main ships/pairings and I knew I’d have to make a post dedicated to this at some point so here it is lol (also sorry this is so long). My “main” universe, which is what all of my main pairings are in, is based on the ‘98 film for the most part (although really all of my universes are based on the ‘98 film, just with alterations here and there).

Edit: My preferences have changed somewhat, so I’ve edited this list to reflect my current feelings towards certain pairings. This means that I’ve deleted some pairings that I don’t like much anymore, and have added some new ones :). All of these ships are in no particular order btw.

Main Pairings:

Tuggoffelees

-I know it’s super popular and there’s loads of content on them, but I still stan. I don’t love them AS much as I used to, but they were my first ship in this fandom, and therefore are still very important to me.

Demebombastrap

-In terms of individual pairings, I really like Demelurina and Bombastrap on their own, but I like them best all together. I used to be quite fond of Demestrap by itself, but I’ve gotten pretty tired of that ship over time personally (obviously nothing against people who like this pairing a lot, kudos to y’all who love Demestrap ^^), so I’m not that big a fan of them on their own anymore. In order of the individual pairings I like best: Demelurina first, Bombastrap second, and Demestrap not so much.

Skimblegus (Skimbleshanks/Asparagus Jr., NOT Gus the theatre cat, I see the two of them as separate characters in most productions).

Jellydots (Sweet lesbian grandmas <3).

Tumblejem

-This is my self-projection asexual pairing, leave me alone lol. They give me bestie vibes and I love that for them <3.

Platoriateazer

-This is a bit of a rarepair, but it is one of my main ships, I see Teazer and Plato as platonic partners and Tori as their mutual gf. Alternatively, I like Victeazer and Platoria on their own as well, although I like Victeazer a bit more than Platoria, but I prefer them all together.

And that’s about it for my “main” pairings, here’s a list of my alternate pairings/rarepairs that I love too much for my own good.

Alternate Pairings/Rarepairs:

Demandra

-No longer my main blog’s url, but they have their own blog now and therefore are still ridiculously important to me XD. This is my fave rarepair, and might also be even MORE of a self-projection asexual pairing for me than they were before. I’ll say it once, this is my ultimate comfort pairing.

Plonzostrap (Plato/Alonzo/Munkustrap, alternatively, I like Alonzostrap and Plonzo on their own as well, although I haven’t put that much thought into Munklato on its own).

Platoricopat (Cats Zurich got me obsessed with this concept, and @whitmerule’s gifs are are just *chef’s kiss*).

George/Etcetera/Electra

-I don’t really have a ship name for this, and also this particular pairing is very complicated and I’ll try to explain it as best I can. George and Etcetera are romantic partners, Etcetera and Electra are queer-platonic partners (I see Electra as aromantic), and George and Electra are platonic partners. This is technically a main pairing for me, but it’s sort of rare and complicated in its dynamics so I put it down here. Also, I adopted the hc that George is a Pollicle btw.

Oh and just as an aside, I also really like Elecctera and Etceorge on their own, but I probably slightly prefer Elecctera, I just love the queer-platonic besties vibes of them <3.

Mungocavity (This is in a scenario where Macavity is less evil and more of a dumbass, but I really like this pairing. It would be one of my main pairings if my main universe Macavity wasn’t complete shit).

Jemtoria

-One of my newer ships, I usually see Tori and Jem as being somewhat far apart in age, so this is in a scenario where Jem’s a bit aged up and Tori’s a bit aged down. I love everything about this pairing. Considering how much Jem and Tori interact with each other in the show, this ship has so much potential to me. They’re just so soft and they make me really happy <3.

Tuggoffeleteazer

-Once upon time I didn’t think I’d ever ship Tugger or Misto with really anyone but each other, but times change. Initially, I got very interested in the idea of Rumpletugger (which I still quite like on it’s own), but then later became intrigued by the idea of Mistoteazer (and all the shenanigans they’d get up to, both being mischievous and chaotic), so of course this led to me just putting all three of them together XD. I love this trio so much, they just give “bestie vibes ONLY” type of energy, and feel like a super chaotic friend group, and that makes me really happy.

Bombbella

-I’m not even sure how to explain what led me to becoming so attached to this ship XD. I had seen people mention it being a neat concept in passing, but I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who actually truly ships them. I basically got into this ship through my “Jellicle leader Griz” au thing, which is an au where Griz is the oldest of Deuteronomy’s children and was expected to become the next Jellicle leader. She’s much younger in this au than how I typically see her, so the newer Griz design fits well in this scenario. I just got really into the idea of Griz and Bomba being tragic ex-lovers.

They dated for a long time in their teens, broke up for a few years, and then got back together again when they had matured, and then Griz went and abandoned the tribe (as well as Bomba) to see the world and pursue her dream of being a star. Griz returned eventually, but the damage had been done, and Bomba was far from ready to forgive her. In the end though, she does forgive Griz, as does everyone else, but then Griz goes on to be reborn, and they miss their chance at happily being together. It’s just all in all a really fun concept for me to play around with, and has so much angst potential.

Jellycass

-Not a new ship, quite the opposite actually. This is a ship that I usually don’t think much about (hence why it wasn’t here when I first made this list), but whenever I do, I always feel at peace inside lol. I can’t for the life of me find the post that got me into this ship (trust me, I have searched ALL over tumblr for it, I looked through both Jellylorum’s and Cassandra’s ENTIRE tags and still couldn’t find it), but I saw a post when I was first getting into the Cats fandom that talked about how Jelly and Cass would be this sort of “odd couple” that the tribe didn’t really understand, but clicked super well with each other for some reason.

Even though I only ever saw that one post on them for a long time, I grew really attached to the ideas it presented for Jellycass. I like the age gap concept in particular, with my personal idea of it being Cass in her late twenties to early thirties, and Jelly being in her late thirties to early forties. It really heightens the “odd couple” energy of them, and I can see Cass getting along really well with someone older. Troika provides me all the rights for this ship <3.

Some Extra Stuff:

Even though I like Platoria as an individual ship, and ship them to a degree, I’m not super interested in them. They’re a bit bland for me if I’m being honest. I like seeing them on my dash, but I won’t actively seek out content of them, so please don’t tag me in stuff surrounding them if you don’t mind (obviously this doesn’t apply to their poly equivalent). I used to include Demestrap in this section, but now I’m really not all that fond of them, I really only like them together in a poly scenario, like Demebombastrap or even Demelonzostrap.

There’s a bunch of ships that I categorize as “I like it, but I don’t ship it,” and that’s where ships like Munkujerrie and Alonzoffelees fall. They’re ships that I enjoy as concepts, and that I would probably read fanfic about if given the opportunity (and like fanart of), but I don’t necessarily ship them. So you don’t need to tag me for them.

The only ships that I just straight up don’t like, although I have nothing against people who like them, are Tuggerlurina, Mistoria, Skimbledots, and Jellygus, Tuggerlurina being the one I dislike the most. I just scroll past content of them if I see it on my dash, I thought I should probably list them here cause idk, might be useful to @whitmerule to know which ships I really don’t like.

Note: I don’t see any of the characters I listed here as being biologically related, some people hc Deme and Bomba as sisters, or Etcetera and Electra as being twins, I don’t see this personally (In fact I have a whole bunch of family hcs that I’ll probably save for another post, if anyone even wants to read that lol).

And now for my favorite 2019 movie pairings (which I also don’t see any of them as being biologically related), because they’re sort of relevant since I’m listing pairings and stuff so I feel like putting them here too:

2019 Movie Main Pairings

Mistoriastraps

-This is the ONLY scenario where I like Misto and Tori together. I only like it when it’s in the 2019 movie, and only if it’s with Munk, those are my two requirements lol. I think Munktoria and Munkoffelees are really cute too, but I don’t care for them that much, I like them best all together.

Demandra (I see their relationship very differently in the movie, and I prefer their stage-show relationship, but as always, I love them).

Tantojerrie

-I know they don’t really interact in the movie, but I saw people talking about them as a ship on here, and I just think they’d be really cute. Technically Tanto is implied to be kitten age in the movie, but I imagine this as a post-movie, next Jellicle Ball type scenario. I see Tanto as being on the cusp of adulthood, where she’ll probably be an adult at the next Jellicle Ball, and I see Jerrie as being a very young adult, so they’re not far apart in my mind (plus I see Jellicles, being cats and all, aging differently than humans, so this isn’t as odd to me as it might be to other people).

IM BACK BABY!

Ok so! I want to get back on the oc making train and I’m going to start with the three prompts that have been sitting in my inbox for MONTHS. Once I’m done with these 3 I will put out the request for more one word prompts for the Jellicle OC challenge 2: electric boogaloo. So without further ado...

This lovely lad is named Teagan. He is a a brown Scottish fold cat with grayish green eyes.

Teagan’s life started off fairly uneventful all things considered. He was born to relatively small liter in a relatively normal household. Once the kits were of a decent age they were all handed off to new families of their own. Teagan was taken off to household consisting of one father, a grandmother, and a pair of rambunctious twins. Teagan often found himself bearing witness to their common mischief, as well as the reprimands from their frustrated grandmother. He quite enjoyed it, made things interesting.

The quaint apartment the family called home fascinated Teagan, especially how much fun it was to scratch at the flowing curtains and wooden furniture. Shortly after making this discovery however, the father decided it would be best that Teagan not be kept home alone during the day while the family was about. Thus, Teagan began accompanying the man to work. This is where things got interesting.

While the children went off to school during the day and grandma went off to something called “bingo”, Teagan would be taken with father to work. Father worked as a driver for a large two storied red vehicle that Teagan learned was called a “Trolley”. Teagan would find himself plopped in fathers lap as he drove across the city with all sorts of interesting people on board. Teagan quickly learned that people liked his presence, and, as the scratches and treats became a regular occurrence, he found the feeling was mutual. It came to the point a lot of the riders came especially for him, and eventually father gave him a little uniform of his own in the form of a plaid bow tie.

These days of riding on the trolley were the norm, the only thing breaking the norm being periodic trips to the local pub on the weekends. Most of the time father would go alone to be with friends (while the twins had grandma watching them), but if the trolley had run late that day Teagan found himself carted along to establishment as well. There he received the same pleasant treatment as he received on the trolley, and the raucous nature of the place gave Teagan plenty of excitement compared to his normal day to day life. That is, until the day the folks from the train arrived.

Teagan met Skimbleshanks on one of the late trolley days in the pub. He arrived with a group of train yard workers on a break, and immediately Teagan did not like him. The Tom gave off an air of self importance and sureness in his demeanor that ruffled his whiskers. Plus, the orange Tom began taking away all the attention Teagan had grown used to! He refused to let it stand, so he decided to take a note from some of the twins occasional mischief and attempt deal with the problem himself...

Skimbleshanks began noticing unusual occurrences whenever he visited the Tavern. Pints regularly being ‘accidentally’ spilled on his head, his tail getting caught in swinging doors, old curtains falling on his head, etc. For a while he chalked it up to bad luck, until one day he caught a small kit casually tipping one of those precarious pints over the edge of a table.

Skimbleshanks quickly confronted the mischievous kit, reprimanding him for his unseemly behavior like a disappointed father. Teagan didn’t appreciate the lecture however, and, rather than an apology, Skimble received a hiss and a bat on the nose for his trouble.

While the small attack didn’t cause any damage, it did get the attention of the feline’s respective humans who quickly moved to intervene. As the two cats were separated they could only watch as the trolley and train humans began to bicker, each accusing the others cat of starting the whole mess. It got to a point where the bartender had to come to break the whole mess up!

Skimble was none too pleased with the events of course, but Teagan was more than thrilled. He got to show the other Tom who was in charge and didn’t get in any trouble at all! It would be a while before Skimble would return with the train humans to the pub after that particular incident, but it only served to increase Teagans excitement. As long as there was a precariously placed drink to be spilt or a door to be swung shut, Teagan would be ready. This little rivalry was sure to make the average day a whole lot more interesting!

Of course you can! <3 Let’s start with Rumpleteazer...

Why I like them: She’s the most cheerful little hellraiser who’s always so much fun to watch, and she’s so bubbly and surprisingly affectionate to the cats she cares about. Rumpleteazer is the feline embodiment of sunshine and chaos, and I adore her for it.

Why I don’t: Yet again, I cannot imagine why you wouldn’t like her--I can only assume that you also hate happiness.

Favorite episode (scene if movie): As much as I love hers and Mungojerrie’s song, watching her during Skimbleshanks’ song is always completely adorable. She just loves Train Dad so much, even if she sometimes gives him a headache.

Favorite season/movie: It’s always a toss-up for me between Jo Gibb, Shonica Gooden, and Anna Carina Buchegger as my favorite Rumpleteazers, so I gotta go to bat for the ‘98 movie, the 2016 Broadway revival, and the 2015 Tecklenburg production (I haven’t seen any of the Vienna production, but I hope to soon!).

Favorite line: “AND! Ruuum-pleteazer!” She always sounds so indignant, and it’s hilarious.

Favorite outfit: Another toss-up for me, this time between her Broadway Revival look and her Mexico Tour look!

OTP: Victeazermile is an underrated OT3, and it is a ship I will absolutely go down with because Teazer has two paws, dammit.

Brotp: Besides Mungojerrie (whom I headcanon as being her twin brother), I love the idea of Tugger being like a big brother to her who enables all of her mischief. They give Munkustrap all of the headaches together, and it is glorious.

Headcanon: She has two scars on her face from Macavity that are hidden by her stripes--one across her cheek and the other running up her chin almost to her lower lip.

Unpopular opinion: Regardless of productions that have her do the fangirl scream, I don’t think Teazer has a crush on Tugger so much as she wants to be just like him.

A wish: Let Teazer Kiss Girls 2KAlways

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: I just hope she and Jerrie never get left out--like I said before, the show just wouldn’t be the same without them.

And now for Munkustrap...

Why I like them: MY GOOD GOOD PROTECTOR BOY. There’s that one post saying that if Munkustrap’s actor doesn’t make you feel safe and cared for, he’s doing it wrong, and that’s absolutely true. I love his dedication to his family, how sincerely he cares for every member of it, and how even as annoyed and frustrated as he can get he still takes that duty of care very seriously. Plus, I am historically a sucker for the Team Dad character type.

Why I don’t: There are some actors who can come across as overly cold and confrontational (Robert D. Marx comes to mind), and I’m not a fan of that characterization at all. Munkustrap’s the one who brings the audience into the cats’ world, and if it doesn’t feel like he even likes his job, there’s a huge emotional disconnect.

Favorite episode (scene if movie): The Macavity fight and the Old Deuteronomy duet with Tugger... I have Feelings (TM) about both.

Favorite season/movie: The ‘98 movie, the 2002 closing London matinee, and the 2015 Tecklenburg production--Michael Gruber, Jack Rebaldi, and Armin Kahl are my all-time favorite Munkustraps.

Favorite line: “At the sight of that placid and bland physiognomy/When he sits in the sun on the vicarage wall...” Especially when the actor hits the note on “sun” in his head voice--it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Favorite outfit: Jack Rebaldi is the face of Munkustrap for me--just pick any of his costumes over the years, and you have it.

OTP: Demestrap will always have my heart--they both deserve to be happy. <3

Brotp: Alonzo is his best friend and greatest support, and Munkustrap can’t imagine his life, let alone his duties as Protector, without him. I need more of their dynamic in productions.

Headcanon: He speaks with that Mid-Atlantic “not quite American or English” accent because that’s the accent his mother had, and you can gauge his mood on whether he sounds more American or English at the moment.

Unpopular opinion: I think he has a healthier work-life balance than fandom jokes about his sleeping schedule and stress levels would have you believe.

A wish: ...You know, Lis, you’ve actually converted me to Team Let Someone Other Than Munkustrap Be The Next Leader. Not that I don’t internally weep at the end of the Tecklenburg production, but I like the idea of him abdicating so he doesn’t have to become this distant venerated figure even more. Maybe a production could have a moment of him giving someone like Jemima or Mistoffelees his blessing to take his place.

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: No more harsh and combative Munkustrap actors who try to fight Tugger during their duet--nothing breaks my heart more.

It’s Electra Time: Part 2

Picking up from part 1 where I re-watch Cats 1998, keeping track of where Electra is and documenting who she is standing next to.

Last time, we left off right after ‘Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer,’ so we will begin with ‘Old Deuteronomy.’

Old Deuteronomy

Everyone's excited that Old Deuteronomy is almost here.

Electra expresses her excitement by nuzzling Munkustrap's leg. Jellylorum is there too..

Petting time.

Munkustrap gets everyone in position to greet Deuteronomy. He touches Electra's head and she moves closer. Here Electra is next to Jemima and in front of Jenny.

Instead of charging forward with the others to hug Old Deuteronomy, Electra goes for Munkustrap instead. Electra initiates a lot of contact with Munkustrap; I think she might have a bit of a crush on him.

Old Deuteronomy nuzzles are the best.

Nuzzling your head against Munkustrap's leg is also good.

The Awefull Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles

At the beginning of this song, Electra is located near Victoria, Jemima, Pouncival, and Cassandra. She hugs Pouncival.

Gotta get comfortable for story time. Not that the position Electra chose looks comfortable at all.

Electra and the other girl kittens supposed to be the Pomeranians, I think.

Electra the Pomeranian is ready to fight Skimbleshanks the Pollicle.

She is between Victoria and Etcetera.

Electra during the bows. She is near Jemima, Etcetera, and Munkustrap.

Then everyone gathers together to listen to Deuteronomy.

The Jellicle Ball

Jenny tells Electra that "Jellicles wash behind their ears." Electra smiles at that and Jenny looks happy as well and gives her a nod, more like this is a reminder rather than a criticism. I think Jenny is Electra's mother, although it's also possible that Jenny is just very maternal.

When Jellylorum tells Pouncival that "Jellicles dry between their toes," Electra seems to agree and joins Jenny and Jelly in looking sternly at Pouncival. Maybe Electra is better at following good hygiene than Pouncival.

Electra is with Etcetera when "Jellicles jump like a jumping jack." They don’t jump, but they do move up and down.

And here she is between Etcetera and Tumblebrutus.

Then she is between Pouncival and Mungojerrie. The cats all move around a lot during this song. They probably all end up standing next to each other at some point.

Electra shares a diagonal with Misto and Jemima, with Skimbleshanks kind of diagonal to her on her other side, and Rumpleteazer next to her.

And now she is still between Misto and Jemima, with Tumblebrutus next to her and Alonzo diagonally behind her.

Here she is with Jenny behind her and Skimbleshanks to her left. I may have already said this, but think Jenny and Skimble are her parents. She is around them quite a bit.

Back to dancing with Skimble next to her, Jenny behind her, and Jemima diagonally.

With Misto being center stage, Electra quickly dances behind him with Victoria, Bombalurina, and Demeter around her. Jemima and Rumpleteazer are also part of the group that dances past.

Electra hops up between Rumpleteazer and Munkustrap on the tire.

Or Rumpleteazer sits down after Electra does. Either Rumpleteazer got up, then immediately sat back down or this was a small filming mistake.

Regardless, Electra ends up next to Rumpleteazer and they act silly together.

This is a cute, little moment. Electra and Rumpleteazer get excited about Plato lifting Demeter. Rumpleteazer even waves at Plato.

Then Munkustrap turns to Electra and she rushes up to join the dance. Was he was telling her that she was about to miss her part or something?

Electra joins some of the cats for a dance, reaching out for to touch paws with Victoria.

Rumpleteazer joins in too. Electra is near her, Victoria, and Pouncival.

During this spinning part, she is near Pouncival, Tantomile, and Coricopat.

Oh, Electra is with Misto during the Victoria and Plato part. I did not know that.

And she even gets on top of him. Wow. I did not realize Electra and Misto were that close.

Here's Electra angrily dancing at Grizabella. The cats are in staggered rows, so it's hard to say exactly which cats are closest to her. She is diagonally surrounded by Jemima, Pouncival, Bombalurina and Skimbleshanks. Misto is two rows in front of her, but based on the camera angle and possible them moving around, sometimes he looks like he's right next to her.

During the jetes, Electra is with Etcetera. They are next to Jemima and Rumpleteazer.

Now Electra is with Etcetera.

After some of the Toms dance, a group consisting of Jemima, Victoria, Rumpleteazer, Etcetera, and Electra step forward. Electra is on the right.

This turns into a larger group, with Electra now surrounded by Etcetera, Cassandra, Pouncival, Skimbleshanks, and, I think, Coricopat. The lighting makes identifying cats hard.

As the song ends, Electra is in the back left corner. Electra has been in the corner of group dances on several occasions, but at least that makes it easier for me to catalogue who is next to her. It's hard to tell, but here she is behind Skimbleshanks and Mungojerrie, diagonally next to George, and next to Munkustrap.

Memory

Electra is off-stage for this part.

During intermission, I would like to add up how many interactions Electra has had with each cat so far.

Please keep in mind that I may have completely missed a few things and that when the cats are moving, it can be difficult to really figure out who is next to who, so this is unlikely to be 100% accurate, but I still think it's pretty interesting. Also note that these data do not take into consideration how long Electra is near each cat, only that she was there.

Based on my observations, the cats Electra are closest to are:

Victoria - Electra reaches out for Victoria on 2 occasions, once during The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball and once during The Jellicle Ball where Victoria reaches back to her. I've also counted an additional 15 times where Electra is next to or other near Victoria throughout Act 1.

Etcetera - Etcetera and Electra are close. Etcetera reaches for Electra during The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball. I've counted them near each other another 14 times during Act 1.

Coming in third place are Pouncival and Jemima. I've counted Jemima being near Electra 12 times. I've counted Pouncival being near her 10 times, plus Electra hugging Pouncival during The Awefull Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles and Electra joining Jenny and Jelly in judging Pouncival for not drying between his toes.

Munkustrap also interacts with Electra quite a bit. During The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball, Electra is the first to paw at him for greetings; during Grizabella the Glamour Cat, Electra is between his legs. Throughout Old Deuteronomy, Electra rubs her head against Munk's leg twice, gets pet on the head, and attacks his arm instead of immediately hugging Old Deuteronomy. I've also counted them being placed next to or near each other an additional 5 times.

I've counted 7 times during Act 1 when the following cats either interact with or are near Electra: Rumpleteazer, Cassandra (surprisingly), and Jennyanydots.

Skimbleshanks was near her 6 times.

Jellylorum and Mistoffelees were near her or interacted with her 5 times each.

Everyone else was less than 5.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Act 2 will bring.

SPOILERS FOR CATS 2019, here’s my hot takes and opinions

be warned, THIS IS LOOOONG

First off my overall opinion, i LITERALLY cannot say whether it was good or bad, like lots of critics say it just...is beyond that. It’s VERY fun and that’s all I can bring myself to say, I have LOTS of problems with it but I can’t even say that they make the movie bad. It is definitely worth watching

OPINIONS ON CHARACTERS:

Victoria: she’s good! I appreciate that they kinda left her personality blank other than her innocence since that’s pretty much how she always was, still not super thrilled with her as a main character but franchesca did the best she could

Munkustrap: I loved him! he was more of a main character than I would have expected, but they STILL cut all the charm from his lines... why do I love him then? Robbie fairchild did AMAZING background acting, whenever he was in frame he was always doing something SUPER munkustrap-y and making cute dad faces. he was dealt bad lines but he worked around it best he could. Also his legs were normal so...epic fail

Mistoffelees: 😒😒😒😒😒🤢🤢🤮 disappointed but not at all surprised...he was just a Woobie, a softboy uwu nice guy. I felt like I was seeing fanon 2013 loki in cat form. THEY MADE HIS SONG A SADBOY PITY PARTY SONG...WHY WOULD YOU MAKE THE 11 O’CLOCK NUMBER SLOW AND SAD???? Where is the smug little shit who’s vague and aloof yet confident and joyous? He was murdered by his evil homophobic shadow clone. I’m not even gunna indulge the fact that him and Victoria were a thing, I’ll go over that later. He also just constantly looked like the crying cat meme his eyes were so red and watery it was horrifying, yet somehow he wasn’t the worst character , that leads us too.....

tugger: what.the.fuck.did.you.do.to.this.boy. HE GOT THE TREATMENT I EXPECTED FOR MUNKUSTRAP! HE WAS DEMOTED TO BACKGROUND CHARACTER! not only did he not sing mr. mistoffelees, he literally did nothing other than his song, he never interacted with ANY characters besides jenny in 1 scene. I know cats has no set main characters but he’s undoubtedly one of the most important characters and he’s like...the least important named character in the movie. ALSO Jason Derulo was not sexy at all. There was NO hip thrusting NO sexy meowing NO glamrock, he was just an asshole and if I hadn’t already seen the original I would have either completely forgotten about his character or though he was the worst character. I’m so fucking angy I cannot express.

Girzzabella: ngl I expected better. Her acting was great but with the horrible effects I couldnt get invested but I’ll touch on the effects later. Her singing was good, but I expected it to carry the movie and it wasn’t at all the best song in the movie, I’d say she’s about as good as I expected she’d be but the movie itself was more enjoyable than I expected so she was less significant

Old d: she was fine, she LOOKED the part definitely, she didn’t have as large a presence as ken page but I wouldnt expect that of her. Her singing wasn’t the greatest though, her voice is fine by it’s just NOT suited to old d’s songs. I would have preferred she play a female gus bc her voice is very sweet and frail, not at all built for belting like her songs required.

Macavity: he’s just...eh. He’s basically a comic relief villain which sucks. He does practically nothing besides kidnap people, say a cheesy line, and act like a caricature of a 90s cartoon villain (and not one of the fun ones) like theres a scene where he poofs away and when he does it he goes, MACAvityyyyyyy and fades away its so unintentionally funny but it just makes him so lame as a villain. not to mention he doesnt even die at the end or get any satisfying conclusion he just gets stuck on top of a statue and his powers suddenly stop working (for some reason??)

Bombalurina: fuck that, I am simultaneously glad she only was in the macavity number bc fuck off Taylor Swift but also disappointed bc she deserved so much better.

Bustopher: 😟 never in my darkest nightmares did I think I’d see bustopher Jones deepthroat multiple crayfish but here we are. Somehow THIS was the most sexual song, I cannot begin to name the fetishes checked off by this performance bc itd hit word limit. Let me just say that I said multiple times out loud, “damn bustopher kinda a freak with it 😏😏” like I CANNOT stress how weirdly sexual it gets. And ofc its all otherwise just haha funney fat guy eat food and burp and fall down. He also breaks the fourth wall a few times which like, fuck you

Jenny: exactly what was shown in the trailer. Unfunny fat jokes and slapstick humor. Also they focused WAY too many shots on her cat pussy and I wish I was making that up. Also of note is that the cgi on the rats and cockroaches are drastically worse than the rest of the movie, like not just bad designs the effects are BAD. also they translated they whole gumbie cat fur-shedding as her wearing fake skin over her outfit which would be fine but UHH the fake fur is skin tight??? so it literally looks like shes ripping off her skin and she does it multiple times its fucking terrifying

Mungojerrie and rumpelteazer: meh, they are fine as characters, not quite as energetic as I would have liked but they didn’t massively fuck anything up? The song was horrible, they went against the beat for...some reason? Like it’s a song with a very distinct rhythm and they split up the lyrics so weirdly. I liked that they followed through with the lore of them working for macavity

Skimbleshanks: YES YESSSSSSSSSS HOLY FUCKING SHIT 💗💕💖💞💜😳😳😳😳😳😳😳💜💛🧡💚💖❤️💗 i absolutely CANNOT express how good skimbleshanks made me feel. He looks like a leather daddy with his chains and suspenders and hat and stache, I hate that I’m saying this but uh...mr skimbleshanks sir😳 we were actually screaming it was so fucking good. Watching this movie was worth it just for skimble. Unironically. I’m listening to the song as we speak. It was kinda weird that they moved the tap dancing to this song but that’s more of a detractor from Jennie’s and a plus side to skimbles since it’s good tap

Gus: good! Ian did a good job of course, no one doubted that he would.

Growltiger and griddlebone: not racist but still absolutely horrifying. One of the worst parts of the movie, I actually got squeamish looking at griddlebone a few times that’s how bad she looks

Everyone else: not that good. I couldn’t tell who was who, all their personalities were annoying, I’m on imdb as we speak trying to figure out who even was supposed to be who. Demeter is completely butchered and jemima just isn’t there, doesn’t sing her part, it all sucked man.

Tech talk:

CGI: okay so here’s the thing, the effects are good. GREAT even, the issue is how fucking horrible the designs are. The lack of cat nose, mouth, and hairy cheeks makes them all look disgusting. Also the feet. Holy fuck why do they have feet. THERES A FUCKING SCENE WHERE TUGGER GRABS VICTORIAS FOOT AND SNIFFS IT. IT LASTS LIKE 5 SECONDS. Old Deuteronomy, Gus, and Cassandra (bc she was already bald) are the only characters I’d say look anywhere close to decent, grizabella looks okay in profile but head on it’s all horrible again. its really such a shame bc the sets are gorgeous! i really hope this movie gets some form of recognition for its sets.

the editing and directing was DOGSHITTTTTTT there are SO many scenes where characters just teleport or parts where people are singing and no ones mouths are moving its really distracting

Other things:

it’s OBVIOUS that the critics calling this movie horny have never seen the original. I’d definitely say the movie is LESS HORNY than the play. It IS however waaaaaaay more uncomfortable with its hornieness, so I’d say in that regard YES, the horny stuff is much more gratuitous and off putting despite there being an overall smaller amount than the play. ie everything bustopher jones does

They changed a BUNCH of lyrics for some reason?? Like they cut verses which I understand but there are like a handful of lyrics in almost every song they just...change. like...okay? All changing lyrics is gunna do is make people who knew the songs frustrated when they can’t sing along

the dancing was incredible! shame the cg just fucking invalidates all of it bc your mind doesnt register it as real people doing real moves

OKAY THE FUCKING CATNIP SCENE so when taylor swift showers everyone in catnip they all just fucking start moaning and go FULL HORNY its TOO MUCH like misto full on does an o face like eyes rolled back mouth open and munkustrap is like ass up panting i still havent processed it im fucking terrified to encounter it again. they cut the orgy? yet added THIS??? k

WHY did they take 2 of the most iconic characters who FREQUENTLY interact and just

a. Never even have them make eye contact

b. Make 1 a background character

c. Completely change the personality of the other one

On the topic of Victoria/misto: I am just still at a loss as to why they thought it’d be a good idea? They completely removed Plato and for what? This? Pathetic. It’s worth noting the weirdly munkustrap has WAYYY more chemistry with both Victoria AND mistoffelees then they did with each other (there’s a part where it looks like misto and munk are about to kiss for some reason?? munk ALSO gets all touchy feely with skimbleshanks???) anyways munkustrap king moments

tldr; its worth watching, the best parts were the sets, the dancing, skimbleshanks, and munkustrp fucking CARRIES the weight of the world with his face acting. the worst things were a big fat tie between bustopher, tugger,misto,jenny,growltiger and griddlebone, and the godawful design choices

The Cats of Cats Ranked According to How Good They’ll Be as Super Smash Bros. Fighters

Old Deuteronomy: So Old Doot has some sort of magical powers, but they’re kinda nebulously defined, and he’s not got a lot of iconic Dancy moves you can turn into physical attacks. Plus it would be really weird to have someone as serene as Doot in the field of battle, he kinda feels more like Assist Trophy Material.

Grizabella: on the one hand she sings the most iconic song in the entire show, on the OTHER hand…. it’s hard for me to see such a frail old cat actually flight, what sorts of attacks she would have? Sound-Based attacks where she sings ‘Memory’???? Does she summons leaves and wind and moonlight? No wait that’s kinda badass

Macavity: I’m writing this assuming that we’re talking about a SINGLE Cats Smash Fighter, and having that be the villain feels like an odd-choice, even if he is one of the few characters that can actually do a Physical Combat…. Honestly that kinda makes him less INTERSTING. Cause if you think “Cats in Smash” I think turning totally silly dances and props and song lyrics into attacks is much more intersting and representative of the Cats Experience. You could probably do something intersting with his implict powers of teleportation and flight. The Idris Elba version would have probably ranked higher (espacially since he can teleport other people) but we cannot subject Smash to the 2019 designs.

Gus\Growltiger: Including them as the same Fighter, with the idea that Gus has a mode-change gimmick where he shifts between the frail, lightweight and kinda-weak Gus Mode into being the badass swashbuckling pirate Growltiger, who is faster, stronger, but also heavier. Main issue is that Gus Mode shares the same flaws as Grizabella would and also Growltiger is being phased off a lot of production cause…. you know… it’s pretty racist. So even if Growltiger as a Smash Fighter won’t include any Siamese Cats, maybe it will be uncomfy to remember his main defining characteristic is that he’s a Racist Cat.

Rum Tum Tugger: Probably the most Popular Cat in Cats??? Very iconic, and has a very iconic song, you can probably do something with like... Fangirls and Fanboys Based Attacks, or some of his dance moves. But the only problem is.......... I don’t think you can do a John Partridge Crotch Thrust in Smash, so like............. What is Even the Point?

Bustopher Jones: Well-known character with a fun song, the various props used in his performance could be used as fun attack ideas, but his lack of movement on-stage might also limit his moveset. Also, Bustopher would obviously be a slow-moving, heavy-hitting character with bad mobility, and while there’s nothing wrong with that on it’s own… if we’re talking about only ONE Cats character, I would want them to be representative of the Cats experience as a whole, and of the idea of cats-the-animal. Thus, I believe a dancier, faster character with good mobility and recovery options would be best - Bustopher works better as the Second Smash Rep and not the first.

Jennyanydots: She’s kinda has the same idea as Gus with a Mode Change between her daytime form with a heavy coat and is a heavyweight but slow character, and her nighttime form that has her in her tapdancing outfit and allow her to be lighterweight and faster even if she doesn’t hit as hard - that way both forms have advantages and disadvantages and a lot of options for attacks (Daytime Jenny attacks with the help of the mice, Nighttime Jenny attacks with her Beetle’s Tattoo). She can also incorporate dance moves into her attacks, which is more of what I would want from Cats rep. The main drawback is that I really don’t think she’s a super-popular cat ):

Skimbleshanks: Very popular cat with a very popular song, espacially after the 2019 movie! A lot of potential with the tap-dancing inspired attacks and the train-inspired attacks, obviously a very fast medium-lightweight character. Althogether a strong option, but I would prefer a character with better aeriel mobility and I feel like Skimbleshanks is a character who’s best when he has both paws on the ground (trains are kinda... you know, Landbound, so I would assume the Railway Cat would be similar)

Mr. Mistoffelees: Very popular cat, a serious banger of a song, his magician-theme, his use of props and magic, and his dancing skills all allows for a great and versatile moveset with great mobility. As I mentioned under Bustopher Jones, I am thinking about a character who represents both Cat-the-Animal and Cat-the-Show as a whole; so I’m leaning more toward the lightweight, faster, lighter-hitting characters with good mobility and aerial recovery (cats land on their feet, after all) to fit the cultural idea of a cat and an acrobatic character with a lot of cool dancing moves to fit the cultural idea of the Cats show. Also Rum Tum Tugger might not be the best choice for a fighter on his own… but he could help Misto on some of the attacks!

ALRIGHT! I’ve now seen the new Cats movie!

My first thought?

”That could’ve been a lot worse, actually.”

Even if I didn’t absolutely love it, some of the songs really brought me glimpses of the happiness and excitement I got from the original musical, and dare I say it, I would actually like to see the new movie again.

I went to see it right after watching the old version with my friend (she loved it btw!) and so, the contrast was pretty big.

My general thoughts and some shameless ranting with absolutely no order *spoilers ahead*:

- I got used to the designs of the characters quite quickly, there were some I liked more than the others but my mind numbed to it eventually. "You get used to anything, except an icicle up in your asshole", as the age old Finnish saying goes (and that's a rock fact).

- However, I did not like Jennyanydots the Bodyhorror Cat and I am pretty sure the person behind every decision regarding her might be an alien.

-Bustopher Jones lost all his dignity. In the musical he is very respected and completely fine with being a ”bounder”, yet in the movie they make a joke about him being sensitive about it. I also could’ve done without seeing cat men and women wolf down garbage.

- Apparently falling and tripping on things is still concidered to be peak humor in Hollywood.

- (maybe thanks to that) Instead of the humor coming from just their body language, they relied more on the spoken gags. Most of them are pretty meh. However, I’ll never forget the ”Is he neutered? That note was kiiinda high...” line, ’cause, whoa... wow... damn... Didn’t expect that. Lmao.

- Speaking of the Rum Tum Tugger... well, let’s just say John Partridge will probably keep the mantle of being the best Tugger forever. Derulo has a good voice but the whole design given to his character and the way they had downgraded his importance in the movie made him a tad forgettable.

- Also, Jellicle cats do not have cheerful faces, actually Jellicle cats seem rather mean.

- The ”Touch me!” Part of Memory lost most of its meaning since the importance of touch was never implied in the movie. I’m also annoyed that the directors didn’t tell the actor of Grizabella (Jennifer Hudson) to go a bit easier on her first two appearances and do the full blast crying scene at the end when she’s pleading the other cats to accept her. Her emotion was seriously amazing, but because it was too strong right from the start, she lost the wow moment she could’ve had at the end. It wasn’t her fault, Memory is supposed to be an emotional roller coaster, but she should’ve been directed better.

- I prefer Grizabella being much older looking overall, even in the musical productions, since the comparison between how the Jellicles behave towards Gus and Grizabella is quite an important point to me. If they are both older cats, it’s easier to see and the decision to send her to the Heaviside layer more justified. Yeah, Grizabella’s coat was a bit dusty and the corner of her eye a bit scarred in the movie but she was waaaaaaay too fine to think she’d need a whole new life to fix herself. Nope.

- Very important note: There definitely should've been a rule that cats with clothes should KEEP THEM ON during the entire movie. The whole deal with clothing was utterly baffling altogether. Some cats had cat sized shoes, hats, jackets and they seemed unable to decide if they should keep them on or be in their birthday suits most of the time. Plus, if some cats have clothes and others don’t, it’s just going to look odd. And hey, why is that one cat otherwise naked but wearing shoes? I don’t know man, nobody knows.

- Thankfully, Skimbleshanks the Railway cat decided he rather liked his pants and never removed them. His tap dancing number was one of the best scenes in the movie. He also had a proper excuse to wear cat shoes. Good job Skimble.

- Ian McKellen (the cat) had the kind of fur around his head I wish every cat on the movie would’ve had. I’ll never forget him saying ”Meow, meow, meow!” Or dunking his head into a bowl to lap water with his tongue. I actually got a bit teary eyed watching his number.

- I don’t feel that Taylor Swift’s Bobalurina was... well, Bombalurina. She was just some hench cat whose only purpose was to get everyone high on catnip and preach about Macavity.

- Honestly, I actually thought the whole Macavity song part was pretty neat! Hear me out (don’t scoff, lol). Yes, it was odd, but the way the dancers started moving when the golden flakes touched them was fascinating to watch. It was almost like a reference to the beginning where the cats couldn’t help but dance under the Jellicle moon and their movement showed that clearly. Storytelling, but with dance! Can you believe it!? I’m just sad that the CGI cheapened the dancers’ amazing performances during the whole movie since their movement looked odd at places thanks to the added fur. When there’s so much digitally added effects on screen, you can’t help but wonder, is this real or just animated?

- I haven’t said anything about Munkustrap, I notice. Maybe because I like complaining too much and had to get all the whining out of the way. Good news, Munk remains a good, good cat and he was definitely my favourite character, alongside with Skimble (who kept his pants on, as you might recall). Thank the Everlasting cat or the Maker for small mercies.

- Also, to people talking about Munk and Misto in this new movie, I see ya. My poor heart is quite confused since the song Mr Mistoffelees is, and will always be, to me (and many others) Tugger and Mistoffelees' song, and therefore can have that kinda romantic vibe. Since they threw Tugger out of the window, going as far as to make the two interract as little as possible, I’d rather eat my right leg than accept the romance they cooked up with Victoria and Misto. Since Munkustrap sings the first parts of Mistoffelees’ song in the movie, I can see why Munk and Misto could be seen as a new pairing.

I don’t mind if you like Victoria and Misto together, it doesn’t itch my bum what other people enjoy, so have fun! Victoria x misto is just not for me. If I had to choose who I ship in this movie, I’d probably ship Skimbleshanks with his hat. It’s a very good hat. You can’t see the CGI ears under it. Oh, did I mention Skimble's pants? They were red and he kept them on throughout the whole movie.

- (just remembered) Victoria singing Beautiful Ghosts to Grizabella immediately after Grizabella ended her second part of Memory, reminded me of that Tall Girl meme from last year. Like, “You think your life is hard?" *bursts into song*

- Macavity being so desperate about getting to the Heaviside layer was actually pretty hilarious and the whole thing about him vanishing all the other “contestants” was something new and unexpected. Didn’t really mind it. I just wish the big finale would’ve been Mistoffelees making all the vanished cats appear again.

- Judyteronomy teleporting behind everyone after Mistoffelees song made me laugh.

- Mistoffelees believing in himself at the end of the movie was pretty wholesome.

- Hey! Macavity’s fur actually looked a bit red when the light hit it from just the right angle and the stars aligned! I wonder if that was one of the features they added when they did the updates. Maybe that's why they couldn't afford to give people cat noses. Oh well.

This is already pretty long and got kinda outta hand. Thanks if you read this whole thing! I just wanted to vent and gather my thoughts about the movie. I love to nitpick and poke at stuff. I hope I didn't come across too negative or say only things everyone and their mothers have already talked about. The movie was far from perfect but in this nice safe bubble of ours no one should feel ashamed of liking something Cats the musical related. I'm actually itching to see this again, in all its horrifying glory, because despite all its flaws and things I wish they would've done differently, it's still Cats and some of the songs and scenes absolutely, quite positively slapped.

I'll ask cause I'm on the fence--is it the type of movie a person could go see on their own, or do you need a group of (probably intoxicated) friends along to make it fun?

I mean, I’m maybe not the best person to ask because I love going to the movies alone, so I think any movie is a fun movie to see alone. That said, I went with my parents, who are in their mid-sixties, and we had a good time without being drunk or “friends” as it were (I mean I love my parents but they are not my peer/colleague group).

Mum thinks it’ll win Oscars. :D She liked Skimbleshanks the best because it was an extended tap number and she’s a tap dancer, and she also liked what they did with Idris Elba’s eyes. She thinks it should get attention for “makeup” but I think it probably only counts as effects since it’s CGI. She did NOT care for Taylor Swift, thought she was flat and it was weird she was wearing shoes when most of the cats weren’t, except for ballet toe-shoes and tap shoes.

The review might say “it was bizzare and horny” but the real OGs know it was always weird and horny

Plus, I mean, actual cats are kind of weird and horny. A lot of what seems to have been read as “horny” is just like...the incorporation of cat body language.

One of my favorite moments of the whole film was a “cat” moment by Ian McKellan, and I’m glad they got at least one hairball joke in :D

I went to see the traveling production and own the DVD of the London show. I'm swinging between excitement and dread they messed it up. The stage costumes did look better then the CGI but we really haven't got a decent look at the dancing yet.

I thought the dancing was great. There were a couple of duds -- Rebel Wilson didn’t do her number any favors, but it more had to do with HOW she was awkward than THAT she was awkward. I do think a lot of people thought some of the dancing was CGI, but I think the dancing itself was all human, which is pretty cool.

A friend of mine and I are thinking of going too, just to throw popcorn.

See, I think that would be fun but also you should wait until the end of the run or until you can pirate and watch at home -- I know a lot of people want to go to make fun of it and I 100% get that, but the rest of the theater might be there to see it because they like Cats or musical theater or their kids or parents do. Like, I was there with my parents who very earnestly wanted to see it, and they would have been really upset if other people were spoiling their moviegoing experience. Even at 10:30 on a Sunday it was us, an elderly couple in front of us, a couple of people there on their own, and like FOUR families with kids.

Trailer #2

An: Okay everyone I think this will be my last trailer redesign but I’ll make this promise if this gets a lot of attention then after I see the new film, which is in a view days, I’m going to do a redesign of the film, I will write the movie like I’ve written these okay.

“Jellicle Cats meet once a year At the Jellicle Ball where we all rejoice And the Jellicle Leader will soon appear And make what is known as the Jellicle Choice

When Old Deuteronomy, just before dawn, through a silence you feel you could cut with a knife Announces the cat who can now be reborn

And come back to a different Jellicle Life For waiting up there is the Heaviside Layer Full of wonders one Jellicle only will see And Jellicles ask because Jellices dare Who will it be? Who will it be?”

A black cat is seen walking through the streets, avoiding cars and rummaging through bins. Bustopher jones stands in front of her “oh my, we better get you cleaned up” he says and the screen fades black.

“Follow me home if you dare to, I wouldn't know where to lead you”

Three knocks are heard and the cat door opens up to a Jennyanydots “oh Bustohoer Jones what a surprise, Jelly and I weren’t expecting you” she says after a small curtesy and Bustopher bowed back “I know but I have an urgent matter about a dirty kitten and this time we will need a bucket of water” he says showing the cat with a streak of white on her cheek. The next shot she’s in the bubbly bath playing with the bubbles, one floats in front of her face and shows Plato’s face before it pops and he wasn’t there. “Sorry I’m late ladies I had a little trouble” duchess says coming inside with Quaxo and Alonzo seeing a clean Victoria with the pink bow “oh whose this darling little queen?”

“Should I take chances when no one took chances on me? So I watch from the dark, wait for my life to start With no beauty in my memory. All that I wanted was to be wanted Too young to wander London streets, alone and haunted Born into nothing At least you have something, something to cling to Visions of dazzling rooms I'll never get let into And the memories were lost long ago But at least you have beautiful ghosts”

Cettie squeals moving to sit between his legs and rub herself against him as Victoria and Rumple playfully claw at his legs and he smirks blowing a kiss to Quaxo. “My darling Victoria I have discovered that life’s greatest treasures lie in having a family with the ones you love” Tugger tells Victoria as he looks over his litter of seven kittens, three are red, brown and yellow with a mix of stripes and spots and four are black, white with gold spots and two have similar looking names. “How did we let him talk us into mating with the both of us?” Misto asked Bomba “we love him and all his eccentricities” she answers.

“Then we have Cassandra,”

The Psychic twins are seen reacting to an unknown presence in the yard. Tantomile and Corcipat watch Victoria and Misto sharing a secret smile with each other. “Will the yard’s magician make a big show?” Tantomile asks Misto “I believe it will be a sight one must see to believe” Coricopat says.

Skimble And Jenny are tap dancing together and skimble twirls Jenny around and they pose finishing their dance in each other’s arms. “I still wonder how our daughter ended up with him?” Skimble says watching Rumple and Jerrie, “if my memory serves me correctly you were just as wild as him in your youth, or did you forget how Rumpleteazer was conceived?” Jenny says smirking at her husband.

Asparagus And Munk share a look of disbelief as someone asked ‘what’s a Jellicle Cat?’ “Boys please settle down you know how upset Munk gets if everything isn’t perfect” he chided his sons stopping then from their prank, making them groan.

Deuteronomy sits down on the tire and he sons come up to bow before nuzzling him. A flashback is shown of a younger Deuteronomy with his sons of varying age with the oldest being Macavity and youngest Tugger. “Deuteronomy do you really believe that she’s out there?” Duchess asks him “all Jellicles find their way home eventually” he says as Grizabella and then Victoria is shown.

“You’re very lonely out there, you should stay” Jemima tells Victoria by the entrance of the yard, “How do you know?” “I can feel your sadness as you remember your life, so please for Plato, for duchess, for everyone please stay” Jemima begs grabbing the taller kitten’s paws, Victoria’s ears and tail tilt down “I can’t” a shot of sad Jemima standing alone at the entrance is shown.

“Is he really a cat?” Victoria says not knowing she could be heard, Bomba slides up behind her “not sure we have a theory going he’s part pollicle” she says watching George smile goofily at Electra and wagging his tail.

Tumblebrutus does a double flip and backflip before turning around and seeing Cettie wasn’t watching him. “How the hell can I get her attention if she’s obsessed with Tugger” Tumble rants to his friends “go and say hi” Plato says “that’s easy for you, you are tall dark and mysterious Queens love that plus you have very intense eyes. Meanwhile I’m quirky, flippy and akward especially talking to Queens” Plato groans finding Tumblebrutus’ plans stupid.

“,Pouncival,”

Pouncival and the other Tom kits are on top of boxes looking at Victoria after her bath, Pouncival leans forward too much and falls off the box landing on his feet as the others laugh at him. “,And please be wary of anyone named” “Macavity!” Demeter screeches as the other cats run and hide, Munkustrap stands tall in front of Macavity, who calmly walks up to him and Tugger who was hiding behind Munk “look at this a family reunion” Macavity says mockingly “leave Macavity there is nothing for you here” Munk states making Macavity cackle “Give me what is mine and there won’t be any cats getting hurt” he threatens and the light turns red as the other cats hiss at Macavity before everything turns black.

Grizabella is shown crying as she lays on the floor, Deuteronomy watches shedding tears for the queen he can’t help. “Does she really think one night can make 20 years of hurt disappear just because she’s sorry?” Tugger said enraged and Deuteronomy sighs “no but even the worst cat in history feels regret for actions made out of ignorance”.

Plato stares dreamily at Victoria as she talks with the Queens “fellas Plato has a case of Love at first sight” Tugger tells the toms as they watch Plato, “go on up and tell her how you feel” Tumblebrutus orders.

“Who are you?” Victoria asked Plato as they circle each other in the moonlight, “I’m called Plato, and you?” He asks “I’m Victoria”. “Will it hurt?” Victoria asked as they start dancing together “I don’t wanna lie it will hurt, I can’t stop it but what I will do with your permission is give you the most pleasurable experience in your life” he promises and he drags his claws lightly down her back making her moan.

Various shots are seen including the kittens all smiling as they dance a chorus line behind Tugger, Munk and Macavity fighting, Rumpleteazer and Mungojerrie in their Peke and Pollicle costumes messing up the barking line, and Deuteronomy nuzzling a shiny Mistoffelees. The final shot is Victoria throwing her magic glitter to the camera as Plato holds her up in the center of a circle of mating partners, Rumpleteazer and Mungojerrie, Electra And George, Etcetera and Tumblebrutus, Jemima and Pouncival, Misto and Tugger, Demeter and Munk.

💗 - Favorite song?

Oof. It varies. Top 3 are usually Deuteronomy, Skimbleshanks, and The Gumbie Cat, though if you asked me again tomorrow I might say something different lol. Top 3 I typically find myself singing quietly to myself are Moonlight, Deuteronomy, and the Song of the Jellicle Cats are black and white, Jellicle Cats as we said are small, if it happens to be a stormy night -. So since Deuteronomy is on both of those lists I guess I'll pick Deuteronomy ^-^

💕 - Favorite chorus cat / background cat?

OOF. Again it varies. I can be obsessed with Asparagus Jr one week and Admetus/George another. Right now it's Electra (massively underrated character imo), but next week it might be like Pouncival/Carbucketty or something

💝 - How long have you been watching / liked cats? (and your journey with it!)

Since I was a kid, I don't remember how old, like probably middle school so that would be like late 90s. Right around when the video came out, so that makes sense. Ended up taking a shelf for a while in favor of other interests, but I recently rediscovered my love for it (ironically, thanks to the 2019 film trailers reminding me how much emotion I get from just hearing a snippet of the music)

💔 - Feelings on the 2019 film?

Meh. Used to think it was entirely awful, but it's slowly growing on me, starting with respecting the actors performances (did the best they could, and took it very seriously, especially Robbie Fairchild) except Rebel Wilson goddamn why is she always a disgusting joke in literally every role, then with liking Skimble's redesign, and Momma!Deut has grown on me as well. Robbie Fairchild's Munk, though I don't like the redesign aesthetically, I've found that I increasingly enjoy watching his performance, and the way the effects team use Munk's ears to add to the expressiveness of Fairchild's performance. That being said I really don't like nearly all of the redesigns. I think Skimble and more recently Deut are the only ones I like. Those two plus Misto are the only ones that look even a little like themselves. Like there's a specific design for each character that makes them identifable, and even though those three don't fully follow those designs, they're close enough and get the aesthetic right so that they still look/feel like themselves. And it's not just that no one else looks "right." Everyone just looks so generic. Those three are the only ones I can easily pick out of the crowd. Even Munk, if his back is to the camera so I can't see Robbie Fairchild's cgi face, I wouldn't know who he was unless I was really looking hard. And the designs in general are just weird. Like alien uncanny valley omg what is that thing. Slowly getting used to them but still… CGI was actually decent, just the designs suck ass. Oh and the tail movements are uhhh... well some of them that I've heard people say are cute and nice little touches I just look at them and go "that's… odd?" I think it's because they were added on after the fact and the actors weren't trained to move their bodies to compensate for tail movement/balance because none of the tail stuff was scripted. And omg where is Demeter?? That young little Cat, is that supposed to be Demeter??? DEMETER AS MUNK'S DAUGHTER IS A THING IN THIS FANDOM NOW BECAUSE OF THIS MOVIE??!?!?!? Anyway I have more feelings but this has gone on long enough so yeah. TLDR: Meh, don't like it, but don't hate it as much as I used to either.

🖤 - Any cat you don't like at all?

Lol no, except maybe Growltiger cuz racism, but he doesn't appear in my main reference production (1998), so I rarely think about him anyway. I usually just exclude him from my headcanon altogether and honestly forgot about him entirely when I was first writing this. But other than that, no I don't really dislike anyone! Even Bustopher, whose song paints him as a walking fat joke, is usually characterized in choreography and interactions as very cultured, pleasant, and especially very well-respected. I figure there's a reason for that other than "he's impressively fat, yo." When it comes down to it, he's a high-society Cat, with apparent high standards, that frequently visits his friends in a freaking junkyard and doesn't turn his nose up to a single one of them or shame them for being "poor" like some other high society folks might. Even Exotica, who we barely even get to know, has her cute moments, like watch her during Deuteronomy, she's so adorable trying to reach for him, then immediately dropping her hand and fleeing as soon as she touches him, like a shy nervous fangirl XD

Oof well this ended up way longer than I intended. That happens a lot with me. It's a bad habit lol. If it let me do a Keep Reading cut on mobile I'd be doing that like every other post lol
