➤ BARBIE CHARACTERS WITH A UNIQUE DOLL!READER request: how would barbie (margot) + ken (ryan) + allan react if the reader was not a barbie but also not a ken. basically they are just like allan, someone that doesn't fit in any of these binary roles.

barbie is — as she always is with new dolls — super excited for your arrival

when you do arrive, she’s quick to welcome you

she introduces you to everyone but especially dolls like midge, allan, skipper, etc

she assumes you’ll drift towards all the other one-of-a-kind dolls

and just kinda be with them most of the time

which is totally fine!! she knows there probably feels like theres a barrier between dolls like you and the regular barbies and kens

...but she secretly hopes you might want to spend time with her

which is partly why she's super enthusiastic the whole time she's showing you around

she wants to make a really good impression in the hopes of you liking her

she’d never mention it, but while she loves her role in barbieland, she wishes she could have a proper close friend that isn’t ken just trying to date her

her thought process is… you’re a unique doll and you don’t have any ties to any barbies and kens, you’re just you and you’re free to befriend or not any doll you genuinely want to!

and beyond all that logic, she just really liked you from the get-go!!

she likes everyone in barbieland of course, but there was just something about you that made her really want to be you friend (or more)

imagine her joy when you continuously go out of your way to spend time with her!!

she’s of course always so kind and bubbly to everyone

which could make you feel like she might not really want you around or sees you as the same level of closeness as all the other dolls (which isn't much)

if you mention that, she kinda freezes for a second before jumping into action again

“no, y/n, i love spending time with you! more than, like, anyone!!”

“really? it just kinda feels like-“

“i’m serious!! you’re better than a bestfriend!!”

if you don’t have a house, you’re invited to hang around her dreamhouse whenever

within reason — if you spend too much time there she starts imagining what it would be like to live with you forever and freaks out

not in a bad way! she just has realisations of "oh i want to spend my life with this person and live in the same house as them" and that thought makes her short-circuit

goodness forbid you do something domestic like get her breakfast for her or brush her hair without her even asking

she'd be a GONER

also she does just like being able to be away from all the other dolls after a big day

so don't take it personally if she politely declines your invitation for a sleepover or she doesn't invite you to stay over one night

she just needs some alone time sometimes!!

barbie bends over backwards to try to convince the other barbies you should be invited to girl’s nights

you can decide how successful she is with that, but the point is she tried really hard because she wanted an excuse for you to be around as much as possible!!

in her walk & drive around barbieland every morning she says hi to you several times

the first thing she says when she wakes up is “goodmorning y/n!”

then when you join her at her car she says hi again

she’s just so happy to see you

she says it again after a whole series or “hi’s” with all the barbies and kens on the beach

she hopes the other dolls might also pick up on her habit if they haven’t already and also say hi to you!

and if they don't she'll just pointedly say hi to you again so someone takes the hint

she is so invested in your wardrobe

if your style is some sort of diffferent/alt she is SO curious

she’d want to get new clothes for herself to match you style on special occasions

or special outfits for you to match hers

but she also loves it when you both wear your own clothes with your own personal styles!!

not necessarily because of the aesthetic contrast if there is any

but because she loves the authenticity!

you both being able to be yourselves and be together

and happy! so happy!!

also these have all been kinda set pre-movie so brief spoiler warning for below

when her feet go flat you’re the first person she confides in

at first she kinda thought your feet might be flat? and the attribute rubbed off on her because you spend so much time together??

she knows now that that makes no sense, but it’s what she’d wished was the case

she also asks you about stuff like that

like she knows dolls like midge or some of the discontinued barbies have parts about them that are noticeably different from other barbies

and she’s curious about if you have something like that

ryan gosling!ken

ken isn't confused, per se, but rather doesnt really know what to do

are you invited to the barbies' sleepovers?

do you have your own dreamhouse??

is he.... allowed to pursue you romantically even though you're not a barbie?? is he meant to want to be with you like that if you're not a barbie??

(not in a sexuality sense, but in the sense of; he's ken, a barbie's boyfriend, and you're not a barbie so...? what now?)

if you have your own dreamhouse or some sort of other unique house, he is so excited and really wants to see it

but he tries not bring that up because he knows kens arent allowed in barbie's dreamhouses

so that probably means the same rules for whatever your house is, right?

now he's really confused

he tries to think if anyone's ever been in midge's house? because she's like you — one of a kind — so surely that'd mean the rules work the same with you as they do for her

he asks allan — because he's friends with midge — if he's ever been in her house before and allan's just like "?? what??"

ken did not get a straight answer

not because allan's hiding something or anything but ken was just all over the place and being really confusing in general & with his wording

when you do invite him into his house he is Shocked.

does that mean the rules are different for you?? or are they just like the barbies' and you're just like really nice???

he still doesn't have a straight answer

but he also stands at the door for a second like,

"okay what do i do now-???"

"you walk in ken... it's a door"

"wow...."

doesn't want to touch anything in your house out of fear of ruining/breaking something

but the moment you reassure him to "make himself at home" (the statement makes him so flustered and he swears he's going to faint) and he really believes you won't get mad at him for looking around, he is OFF

looking at everything

stars in his eyes the whole time

no matter if your house is a huge dreamhouse or something else like skipper & midge's treehouse

he thinks it's so cool & loves it no matter what

you're signed up for sleepovers with ken for the indefinite future now btw, you're never getting him out of your house

(if you do actually ask him to leave he is out of there at the speed of light but why would you ever wanna do that!)

he tries to remind everyone to always include your name in their daily "hi barbie!" "hi ken!"s

and then is torn between:

him wanting you to be included and not feel left out

and; his rival ken just said hi to you and he doesn't want that either!!!

he just feels so out of depth with you

not in a bad or personal way! just in general

because he doesn't really even have anyone to ask about how to go about things with you

it's not like there's many other unique dolls out there with particularly confused kens for boyfriends constantly overthinking everything

and also he's not experienced with relationships in general, and just wants to treat you right!!

he gets a hang of it though!!

with some help he realises he can just be himself with you and if something is genuinely bothering him he can just ask/talk to you about it

though he will have some wild out-there questions from time to time about your unique experiences

he'd ask allan or midge but both of them always look at him funny when he asks if they have mind-reading powers or something weird like that (and he's scared of skipper so shes also a no-go)

so that's your problem now!!

overall really loves you while also being very new to all this stuff and doesnt want to mess up

if he makes a big deal out of something seemingly little/inconsequential its because he really cares and want to do everything right for you 💛

allan

things don't happen suddenly with you and allan

there's no big burst of emotions or anything like it

it all just slowly builds up

ever since you'd arrived in barbieland you've spent a good amount with allan

standing on the sidelines at the beach watching the barbies play and kens cheer

sticking with eachother during parties

neither of you really realise it but you're with eachother like all the time every day

it had only started because you two were alike

being a unique doll that's neither a ken nor a barbie, there was only so much you could learn/do with following around one of the more welcoming barbies like a lost puppy

eventually you'd realised you didn't really like spending all day kinda just not fitting in with everyone else

and then you'd properly met allan, and things started to make sense

he showed you around barbieland his way

that included things like explanations of unspoken rules that all the other dolls had neglected to mention

and telling you about the other unique dolls/discontinued barbies

he gets what its like being your own unique doll

how different it is, how it can be hard to fit in and feel like you belong

but suddenly the two of you are alot less lonely because youve got eachother now!!

before you showed up allan's days were just floating around the sidelines of the kens' and barbies' activities alot of the time

but now more and more of his time is doing genuine hobbies and spending time with just you

also im a firm believer him and midge are friends so shes your friend now too!

group lunches together at her treehouse while everyone else is at the beach and its just nice and peaceful!!

SORRY im simultaneously spreading the allan & midge friends agenda while also trying to stop myself from spontaneously writing a midge x reader fic

i have no idea if allan has a house, you probably dont either

if you dont have a house — it takes a bit for him to be comfortable with it, but once he is — allan will totally invite you over whenever

and let you sleep over

if you do have some sort of house then you're probably at eachother's places an equal amount of time

if he doesn't have a house (yet again i have no idea if it was mentioned in canon at all) he's not like mind-blown by your house or anything like ken would be

but he's happy whenever you invite him in!!

allan probably knows whenever certain places in barbieland are relatively deserted

and once you're close enough he'll share them with you!!

(he wants to know he can trust you not to bring a ton of people and ruin the quiet atmosphere)

even though each unique non-barbie/ken doll is well... unique! there's still a level of understanding between you and allan

and if you ever feel insecure/like you don't belong, he gets it and he's there for you!!

things start slow with allan, until one day he's staying over at your house just enjoying eachother's company, and you realise wow, you guys are basically dating!

Jet and John-D went to a concert together, it seems they've both fallen for the singer...

Ramblings about this piece under the cut :)

I gotta say, I loved loved loved drawing Julien!! I love the pose I chose (used Gerard Way reference picture lmao) and his clothes even though they are rather simple. I had a little trouble with his hair but honestly it was more of a fun challenge than anything else and it's been a long time since I enjoyed struggling with art so I really had fun with that.

I genuinely loved drawing this so so much and I think that's why I was so okay with having to work extra hard on it! Like, I never do backgrounds, it's usually just a flat color, but I was so passionate about this that I not only gave it a background but gave an attempt at fun lighting too!

As for Jet and JD, I really liked how they turned out too! This was my first time drawing John Dory and I admit that I didn't really do anything special with his design but I still like how he came out. I had to fight of the urge to give him crow's feet because this is supposed to be a slightly younger version of him. Jet, on the other hand, I had to do a lot of work on and I'm still not completely satisfied with how it looks but, despite that, I think I did a pretty good job with him. I tried a new style of drawing his liberty spikes and I think I like these more.

Jet and JD's body language was also fun to play with and I think it brings a little more characterization to the piece. For example, their tails! JD's tail is up and at attention because he is constantly looking for an adventure and he thinks Julien could be his next one. Alternatively, Jet's tail is kind of saggy, like it's shoulders, because he has always been a hopeless romantic and I think it would have melted at the idea of a relationship with Julien.

I didn't give Julien a tail because Maddy (i hope it's cool that I'm using your name instead of your @ 😅) doesn't give his trolls tails and I didn't want to overstep.

Okay, okay, last thing I think, I really want to go into more detail about how I think Julien and Jet would have been together and how they're relationship would be in the present now that Julien is divorced and Jet has kids but Julien is very much Maddy's OC and I don't want to do anything with him without his go ahead but, yeah, look out for that
