labor of love
Tumblr media
Thinking back on the books and shows that have captivated me most over the years, I’ve noticed that a significant part of my enjoyment comes through glimpses of the creator themselves. The human, fallible, subjective, personal, and unique perspective that bleeds through. I'm forever trying to see things from the other way around instead of as the audience. As I become more familiar with a person’s work, I almost imagine myself as the close friend who can see bits and pieces of their loved one in everything the write.
When I deal with fandoms or read and listen to media criticism, I inevitably get slapped in the face by the absence of this habit in other people. Maybe it’s because of concepts like “entertainment” and “consumption” making art into a product we spend our money on, and therefore we feel it owes us something. Maybe it’s the trend of pretending arbitrary differences in taste are actually somehow a basis for objective criticism. Regardless, even though I see plenty of reminders all over fandom spaces encouraging people to just enjoy things without worrying about whether they have some sort of intellectual merit, I don't see much acknowledgement of the creator’s point of view here.
So let’s talk about creative work as what it is: somebody’s dream, which brewed in the dark and solitary chambers of their mind, real but invisible to the outside world. By some miracle of good fortune and incredibly hard work, that dream is made accessible to us, the audience. It’s difficult to express how surreal that really is. Not all media is like this, of course. But sometimes you can see when a story is made with love, that the creator is so in awe of this miracle that they bring all of themselves into it. When that happens, I too fall in love, and preference no longer seems to matter. It’s not, “I enjoy this thing because it’s so ME,” it’s more, “I enjoy it because it’s so THEM.”
I worry sometimes that I have rose-tinted glasses on, but here’s the thing. We seem to over-associate criticism with logic, and praise with delusion, when in reality they are both limited. What I’m talking about here is neither. Sorry if this sounds cheesy, but I think “to love,” means “to know.” It’s where flaws and strengths blend together into a whole that is understood as it is cherished.
All these various observations have been tumbling around in my head more and more since I’ve gotten into this funny little thing called Boku no Hero Academia. It’s so popular, so polarizing, it draws in such a wide range of opinions from so many different kinds of people. I find it fascinating to watch, but, like I just said, it also tends to slap me in the face. Not out of personal offense, mind you. More than anything I’m stunned by how disconnected a lot of people are from this human element, whether they are being negative or positive. Even if they know enough to invoke the name of Horikoshi, they treat him like more of a figure than a real person.
It’s true none of us can actually truly know him. However, I think that while the author/audience relationship is a somewhat parasocial one, it’s worth acknowledging the mutuality of it as well. Let me take you all on a little journey to bring “the creator” down to Earth.
First, a few plain facts: Before bnha, Horikoshi was able to get two other manga into serialization: Oumagadoki Zoo and Barrage. The former lasted 37 chapters from 2010 to 2011. Barrage lasted 16 chapters, in 2012. Juxtapose this with Boku no Hero Academia, which as of writing this, has been running for over 370 chapters spanning 8+ years since 2014. Horikoshi is currently 36 years old (born in 1986).
Now let’s go back even further. His first one-shot was published in 2007, when he was 21. It’s called Tenko, and you can read it in English here. Most obviously, we can see that this Tenko character was later adapted to the Tenko we know in bnha, with a similar power, backstory, and appearance. But I actually think there are a few other ways we can draw comparisons from this genesis of Horikoshi’s career, all the way to the present.
Here is the intro that prefaces the 2007 one-shot:
Tumblr media
^I get chills looking at this, and it makes me grin, no joke. Please take a moment to read all the little tidbits. It sounds like the intentionally foreshadowing first scene of a famous person’s biopic, but no one had a clue back then. I just find that so hilarious and moving at the same time.
So think of the Tenko one-shot as a window into who Horikoshi was as an artist and a storyteller pre- pro industry, with the assumption that certain aspects of his work are probably simultaneously a bit more upfront but also underdeveloped. You know, like a kid. There’s both honesty and naivety there. I can also think back to being around 21 myself (only a few years ago lol), about the stories I was writing in school, the workshop classes I was in with other people my age, what they were writing, the things that were important to us that we discussed informing our work. It’s a formative time, right?
One of the primary things I notice about the Tenko one-shot is that it centers themes of power, heroism, and trauma, and has a resolution which involves bridging misunderstandings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s all very ideological, but also full of raw emotion. I read somewhere (sorry can’t remember where) Horikoshi saying that in formulating his idea for the ending of bnha, he has kept asking himself, what does it truly mean to be a hero? It seems he started asking that question way back in 2007, through this little story about swords and their wielders. The Tenko one-shot acknowledges that people and power are morally complicated, as is the idolization of heroes. The ending is hopeful, and looks ahead to times changing for the better by the will of progressively-minded and determined people.
This reminds me of the current arc of the bnha manga, and how the whole story might eventually end. Horikoshi has shown us that the villains are worthy of sympathy, that they are a product of society’s willful ignorance, that “heroes” have also done abhorrent things. But he has also embraced the pure optimism of youth. He seems eager to ask the big questions about right and wrong, and present us with both ambiguity AND certainty. The final fights are not at all a contest of strength, and there are no winners and losers. I’m very curious to see how far he takes this. I’m sure it will ruffle some feathers, and leave some people unsatisfied, but that’s probably a good thing.
Tumblr media
The other major thing I notice in the one-shot is the character Hana. Now, as she shares her name with one of the main characters in Oumagadoki Zoo, and they are also similar in personality, that could be where the comparison ends. However, that’s nothing to say Horikoshi didn’t continue her themes elsewhere. The Hana in the Tenko one-shot is primarily preoccupied with her goal of becoming a warrior, and she was inspired some time ago by a warrior who saved her. This other warrior, conicidentally, turns out to be a brutal, a-moral, self-proclaimed demon, and he actually doesn’t take Hana seriously. In some ways, this reminds me of Hawks with his own idols, Endeavor and Lady Nagant, and more generally the idea in bnha that someone you look up to might not be all you imagine them to be. Like All Might and his hidden suffering. Or like Ochako looking up to Izuku up until his solo arc, after which she proclaimed, “special powers are one thing, but there’s no such thing as a special person.”
Speaking of Ochako. Hana’s primary source of angst in the story is that since she is a woman, her “masculine” ambition is laughed at and dismissed. Her dialogue with other characters is very direct about this, which I find pretty interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can really feel her frustration and see the blatant misogyny in how she’s treated. Even though things are stated kinda bluntly, it feels genuine, ya know? Note that she also wears men’s clothes, and nothing about her appearance is catered to the “male gaze.” I mention all this because to me it contextualizes Horikoshi’s more recent female characters. We can infer that he carried this perspective on, but in subtler and more nuanced ways that might not be immediately noticed. They may sometimes look like shonen stereotypes and be influenced by a misogynistic world, but this is likely an act of parody and/or criticism on Horikoshi’s part. For example Ochako’s fight in the sports festival illustrates a similar point to Hana’s struggle as Katsuki is the only one who takes Ochako seriously while other male classmates see her and other female opponents as inherently weak or potential love interests.
Tumblr media
Hana remains ambitious, fostering her own motivation beyond her previous idol, and her ultimate goal is to help people. She reminds me so much of Ochako’s recent convictions. Ochako is fully herself now, and I’m confident her fight with Toga will show this even more, in a way that is much more direct. Since ch 374, I anticipate we may be getting confirmation of things pretty soon, so I wanted to restate that ASAP.
I’ve said this before, but it really does trouble me how a lot of people assume so much about bnha based on other shonen, disregarding the fact that Horikoshi is his own person. This either leads to undo criticisms or expectations that will likely not be delivered on. It makes me sad because I want people to enjoy this story for what it is. I hope this is a reminder that although it may seem on the surface like Horikoshi is rehashing the same old thing, his work really is a labor of love, of knowing. It is an homage, which both celebrates and deconstructs. Please remember that for the day when folks will be scrambling trying to figure out how we got here. Ironically, the signs were there all along, from the start of Horikoshi’s career, if you only care to look.

She says, "I am a disaster when it is dancing, Yeonjun!"
"Whatever you say, let me mentor you- I wanna dance with you for God's sake," Yeonjun Whines.
"But I don't want to, because I just can't dance!"
"Please-! Just go along with what I do to you!!"
"What will you do to me??"
"I don't know, perhaps I will handle your body too. Just do it!!" Yeonjun whines and becomes jumpy. He's been nagging her for a while now. And she agrees.
And in no time she's spooned standing, swinging to the music and intertwining her hands with his arms wrapped around her waist and her eyes completely on his earlobe and his acute side profile and he leans his face onto her shoulder.
Dancing to the slow music, just rocking themselves to the rhythm, they find their heart growing warm. All of Yeonjun's stress induced from his busy schedule just vanishes as though he reached a cloud nine.
She doesn't like dancing. She just doesn't. But she does like her man dancing. Be it any genre or type, her man slays dancing. And it is his happiness and so, hers too. She loves the smile when he dances flaunting his expert, flexible and durable body, his nose scrunched and him letting out throaty proud chuckles because he just lives in the moment, are the best therapeutic music for her ears.
Being an Idol who dances, models, sings, raps basically handles every role he is assigned to, Yeonjun has always he always remained in the top. And that made his schedule choking tight. She knows this.
Having no time for his woman, he felt love-starved. And now that he is dancing, having her in his arms, handling her to do any dance move he wants her to do, he takes in the physical cajolery that he so wanted to have in these stressful days.
Be it cuddling, kissing, or just laying down resting his head onto her thighs, just sleeping having her massage his head, he just wanted her. Now it's him dancing with her. Finding both mental and physical comfort, he goes on with this.
"I'm so tired," He says while spins her around & grabs her closer to him, "But I can't stop either. Cause I don't want to."
"I missed you," he confesses, "Having you like this is so comforting. You are so comforting..."
"Rock with me?" He connects his forehead onto hers, "And let me steal some kisses..."
He sprinkles cushiony kisses onto her lips and then glides them down her neck, "Just lemme have myself nestled into your embrace and showered in both your physical and soulful love?"
He lets his weight onto her, wrapping his arms around her neck and waist, burying his head into the crook of her neck, he hugs her tight.
Letting her whole warmth provide him the solace that every Fibre of his overworking body have so sought for, he relaxes himself in her warmth. And guiding her to the bed, making her sit in it and rest her back onto the head board. He sneaks in her embrace sheepishly and turning to her side and wrapping his arm around her torso and resting his head into the flesh her collarbone, he says, "I love you."
She lets him take whatever he wants from her and reciprocates his cuddle by patting his head and massaging his head in his hair, "You work hard. For everyone, for yourself. Have yourself whatever you want, I'll give it afterall you deserve the world...... Rest on me? I'll massage your head and cuddle you to sleep?"
He hums in agreement and "I love you too Yeonjun," she says, kissing his forehead.
Tumblr media
• Author's Note : Hehe, I don't know if anyone notices but in headers, that yeonjun is in your lap, falling asleep in three pics in three blinks of eyes (bye I'm rambling but switch on your delulu mode and have Yeonjun sleeping in your lap)

Hey. I'm sorry. So. Your post about sunseekerknight is really long and it seems out of date. I thought everything had been resolved and she promised to make amends but this all started back around again and it sounds like your issue isn't solved. Can you update me real quick? Sorry.
Thanks for being polite and coming to me. I’ll try to summarize things to the best of ability while also noting this is kinda a clusterfuck. It got long, so it’s under a cut.
In March 2020, I commissioned @sunseekerknight (I’m blocked so I can’t actually @ her) to do a Tarot Card commission of my Inquisitor for $80. I sent the money via PayPal friends and family as she requested which is something I no longer do for artists, even though I’d done it before with no problems.
The main post goes over my initial experience really well - the repeated attempts at contact and missed deadlines. This post was made on June 18, 2020 and blew up. I informed Ada that day I was making the post and she told me she’d be doing so as well.
I’d already filed the PayPal claim which was ultimately denied because I’d sent the money via friends and family, despite SSK’s assurances she’d help me resolve it in my favor.
I didn’t hear from SSK after this and I didn’t contact her. My father passed away on June 20th and I was busy dealing with the personal fallout of that (he’d been in the hospital the whole month of June as it was) so my priorities swung towards processing my own grief and planning what happens next.
On July 10th, my PayPal claim was denied. I forwarded the claim to SSK with the following message:
I want to inform you that PayPal has indicated, due to the way you asked me to send the funds (friends and family), they are unable to provide any sort of refund based on their policies. It is your responsibility to make the refund.
Because of the history of fraud I've uncovered, I will be pursuing this further. I am, in particular, asking PayPal to mark this account as one used for fraudulent transactions and scamming money before closing it. My hope is that this account is in your real name and that getting this account marked for fraud has real consequences you have to live with.
I honestly didn’t expect to hear from SSK again, but I did on July 12th:
Oh, I see. Now the difficult situation has become even more difficult. I'm sorry to say this, but, as I said earlier, I had only two offers for people affected by my actions - a PayPal dispute or finished art. And since PayPal is useless in this situation, all I can offer you - is art. I’m still ready to finish your commission because I don't want you to be left with nothing. I would like to return the money, really, but it will take time and I don't know how much, considering the current situation on Tumblr. I still want to resolve this issue peacefully, despite what is happening now. I know that you don't trust me, and I understand this, as well as the fact that you are disappointed, angry, etc., but still I want to do at least something so as not to leave the situation as it is now. But if this is your final decision, then okay, I understand and accept it.
This message struck me as victim blaming. I am, after all, responsible for the situation on Tumblr which means she can’t get commissions. I reacted with some venom and my tone is not great here, but I do ask you to understand the frame of mind I was in here on July 13th:
I don't think it's fair to claim that PayPal is being unhelpful in this situation when it is you who are refusing to refund money for a service that was purchased and not completed. I think it would make me feel better if you started phrasing the "situation" in a way that took responsibility for it. Such as: "I cannot refund the money to you myself, because I spent it before delivering what you paid for, and I cannot get your dispute resolved through PayPal because I asked you to send the payment a specific way that precludes disputes."
I also feel hurt that immediately after I sent my email on Friday, you blocked me from Tumblr and turned all your social media accounts private. I can't think of why you would do this when you claim to still want to resolve this and when I have been more than kind. I find it difficult to believe that you didn't know what my review would cause - it sounds to me like this is something that has been brewing for awhile. Frankly, I'm amazed it took three years. I would also appreciate if, instead of blaming the "situation" on Tumblr for your inability to receive new commissions, you began taking responsibility for that as well. May I suggest: "My actions in the past three years have harmed many people and they are angry about it with good cause. Because I have damaged my reputation to a great extent, I will probably not receive many, if any, people willing to pay me money for commissions."
I fully expect to receive nothing from you: art or my money returned. When speaking with PayPal on Friday, they advised the only way to shut your PayPal account down is if I file a criminal complaint with the IC3, which is the US's Internet Crimes division of the FBI. I did so and sent them the screenshots I have of all our conversations, your posts on Tumblr, and links to the posts of other people who publicly came out regarding the same behavior they experienced. I'm uncertain I can withdraw my complaints from both PayPal and the IC3, and if I could I don't think I would. I'm sure this isn't something that is high priority for them, but I assume eventually they will contact you to discuss your actions. The way I see it, you have three options at this point in time:
Find some way to issue a refund to me, and any other customers you've wronged. If I am contacted by investigators, I will say a refund was eventually issued in my case.
Deliver the art you promised to me, and any other customers. If I am contacted by investigators, I will say a product was eventually delivered in my case.
Continue to ignore what you've done and hope that no real consequences come of it.
As to the art, I don't want it anymore. It has been tainted by this awful experience and I will not enjoy it. I will, however, accept it if you choose to do it to lessen whatever consequences you may end up facing because, truly, I'd rather you learn from this than end up with financial or legal consequences that are even more burdensome.
Honestly. I never expected to hear from SSK again. But I did because this is the drama that never ends. On July 20th:
I must apologize for the long silence. Sorry, I just got home from an unexpected vacation with my family, and I followed the advice of my parents and friends - spend these days away from work and the Internet to feel better. As I said, I understand you. You sound reasonable and you are totally right - it is my responsibility for that. And I'm trying to work it out, even if these are rather strange ways. And it wasn't about you personally. This was part of another problem with a friend I was trying to protect, and I followed the advice to keep the accounts private during the "war" and block some people on the tumblr during this time to avoid any collisions. But still, I was available for correspondence via email, and now all my accounts are again freely available. I know how it looks like, especially for you, when you have really been more than kind to me, and I cannot apologize enough to somehow change and improve this situation. I just fucked up on all fronts and I admit it. And I see, yes. I don't mind returning your art or money, it's just a matter of time. These are not days, these are weeks or months, and it is solely a matter of your patience. If you do not mind waiting, then I will try to return the money to you, since you no longer want art for obvious reasons. I understand and accept it, and it's okay. If you're willing to wait, I'll keep you informed of the refund situation and will do it as soon as I can.
You’ll note earlier I told you I can’t tag SSK cause I’m blocked. I’ve never been unblocked since July despite her saying she would. This is also the last email I got from SSK. I’ve had no communication since to my knowledge.
At this point in time I was tired. Really tired. It was bad news I got this email exactly a month after my father passed because I just didn’t want to do it anymore. This is my second to last email to SSK in response also on July 20th:
Please feel free to do what you need to do to manage the situation. For my part, I have said and done all I can. I have asked for a refund for a service you have been unable to provide in a reasonable time frame, and thus you are legally obligated to return my money in the same reasonable time frame. That time frame has passed already.
When I am contacted by authorities about this matter in response to my complaints, I will tell them you have promised refunds but have not delivered. The only thing you could do to change this answer is to issue a refund before I am contacted.
This exchange is draining and unhelpful for me. I ask that you please do not contact me again until you are ready to issue a refund.
On September 25th, I was informed SSK had successfully opened commissions on Twitter and Instagram. This spurred me to send one final email:
I've been informed you recently reopened commissions to buy yourself something and met your goal, even though you only advertised on Twitter and Instagram.
I would like to remind you that I'm still owed a refund AND you shouldn't spend that commission money until you deliver on that art. Please do not rip and entire new group of people off.
There are other people, in the notes of the original post, who can attest to terrible experiences similar to mine. In particular, @starsandskies, @vorchagirl, and @charlatron have all come forward to talk about what she’s done and their experiences. Her pattern seems to be to open commissions, deliver a few, have the rest dragged out of her, and then to not do other ones. I drew the short straw this time.
I don’t know if she’s reading this - if she is, at this point all I really want is an apology, a list of people who are waiting for art/refunds from her, and a plan as to how she’s going to make it right. If she doesn’t do those things, I suspect I’m going to keep getting dragged back into this cluster for awhile to talk about my experiences.
If you’re waiting for artwork Non, open PayPal disputes and file complaints if you need to. The sooner the better.

Sure! ILOCOS asSURes relaxation😌💖
Tumblr media
Let's take a tour and go back and forth to this pleasant place!
Good day tourists! I am Jheslyn D. Uclusin, a member of Department of Tourism assigned to promote tourist spots in Ilocos Sur that assures happiness, greatness, refreshment, felicity and relaxation. I will make sure that you might encounter the best travel experienced here in Ilocos Sur. What are we waiting for? Come on, join me to enjoy the beautiful places here in Ilocos Sur😉.
The province is known for its rich culture, arts and history, the heritage sites, adventure parks, and of course, the food. But this time, we'll be putting the highlight on the beautiful places to visit here in Ilocos Sur.
Vigan is the capital of the province. Vigan is famous for its well-preserved Spanish Colonial town, historical Vigan tourist spots, and delicious food and delicacies. Because of its charm, it has been inscribed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Joining a day to trip to Vigan is a good idea if you want to explore other tourist spots as well.
1. Calle Crisologo
Tumblr media
Calle Crisologo is Vigan’s most popular tourist attraction. The grounds and pavements of this preserved street are made of cobblestones, and both sides are lined with ancestral houses that are reminiscent of old Spanish towns.
During the daytime, the street is a busy commercial district, with most shops selling quality antiques, furniture, and jewelry pieces.
You can indulge yourself in souvenir shopping, including native food products and delicacies, or snag world-class hand-woven clothing, blankets, and other accessories at Rowilda’s Weaving.
You can ride a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage), which is the only vehicle plying Calle Crisologo.
A kalesa ride is good for an hour and can take you around Calle Crisologo and the rest of the Vigan Heritage Village, including the Vigan Cathedral and Plaza Burgos.
It’s a totally different scene at night, as Calle Crisologo transforms into a dining strip where loads of people eat alfresco and enjoy drinks to cap the night off.
There are a lot of Calle Crisologo tours to try from, make sure to choose the one that fits your budget, schedule, and type of experience.
2. Pagburnayan Jar Factory
Tumblr media
The address is Liberation Blvd, Vigan City. One good thing about touring Vigan is that you get to learn a lot about its history, culture, and way of life through the town’s homegrown establishments.
Take for example Pagburnayan Jar Factory, one of the very few remaining jar factories around Vigan. It’s a popular must-try cultural activity in Vigan.
In order to help people appreciate the industry of jar-making, the factory is open for tourists who want to see and experience pottery making first hand, from simple, basic designs to more artistic earthen jars.
The staff will also tell you an interesting background about the origins of pagburnayan, the art of producing jars, which was inspired by Chinese traders who came to settle in Vigan and then later intermarried with Ilocanos and Ilocanas.
Tumblr media
Located within a good walking distance from Plaza Salcedo, this plaza is named after Padre Jose Burgos, whose statue stands as a reminder of the priest’s martyrdom in fighting the Spanish regime.
Here, you can take pictures, go people watching, or simply give your tired legs some resting time after a long walk around the area.
If you’re feeling hungry, you can grab a quick bite of the best-selling empanada, a kind of pastry turnover filled with minced meat, vegetables, and egg, which is one of Ilocos’ specialty food products on this side of the town.
It’s best to come here in the late afternoon or just before the sun sets since it can get pretty hot in this open space.
If you want to visit more tourist spots in Vigan, City just click this link:
3. Kaparkan Falls
Tumblr media
Kaparkan falls located at the Tineg, Abra. Abra’s falls come alive during the rainy season which is sometime from August to September. The rest of the year it stays dry leaving the limestone terraces empty. Even if you want to visit during the dry season, you won’t be able to because the area is closed off.
As mentioned, Kaparkan Falls is regulated by the local government. The max carrying capacity of the falls is 100 people at a time so visitors are only allowed in batches. Three hours are allotted per batch so maximize your stay at this natural wonder! Keep in mind that you might have to wait for your turn if a group arrives before you.
You can further climb down the pools to explore the area more. The limestone steps are not slippery despite being wet, but exercise caution anyway. Please be advised that there is no rest room in the area.
4. Sangbay ni Ragsak (Falls of Happiness)
Tumblr media
Sangbay ni Ragsak is located at the Suyo. It was first named as Burayok and named Sangbay ni Ragsak by Barangay Captain of Patoc-ao August of 2007. It is approximately 30 m in height. Its natural formation is inherent to mountain terrain. It attracts local and foreign tourists seeking ecological and natural surroundings to enjoy. Its pool area is not deep for diving. Nevertheless, it’s good for dipping with its cool waters.
5. Banaue Rice Terraces (Filipino: Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe)
Tumblr media
The Banaue Rice Terraces are terraces that were carved into the mountains of Banaue, Ifugao, in the Philippines, by the ancestors of the indigenous people. The terraces are occasionally called the "Eighth Wonder of the World". It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimal equipment, largely by hand. The whole address is  Nueva Vizcaya - Ifugao - Mountain Province Rd, Banaue, Ifugao.
8.  Yamashita Cave
Tumblr media
Yamashita Cave is located at the Cervantes. Yamashita cave was the barracks of General Yamashita during the World War II wherein he and his soldiers executed their last stand in the war. The cave was found in the depths of the mountains. Rumors said that treasures are found beneath the cave which has the range of 64 meters.
9. Skyline
Tumblr media
The whole address of this skyline is Santiago - Banayoyo - Lidlidda - San Emilio - Quirino Rd, Quirino, Ilocos Sur. Visitors planning to visit the place would have to travel roads that could remind them of their Baguio City trips with all the long, winding and steep roads.  As visitors traverse the twisty mountain road, they would surely feel the temperature getting much cooler.  Drivers really need to be more defensive as visibility sometimes gets reduced due to fogs.
So you can witness for yourself the unfolding of the breath-taking yet sometimes rare sea of clouds, it is advised to travel early so you can arrive at around 5 AM.  If you are lucky as we were, the clouds will be there for your enjoyment.
Skyline has a view deck and they are currently constructing a new one.  When it is clear and it’s not foggy, the view deck offers a bird’s eye view of Quirino, Ilocos Sur, Tubo mountains and the Abra river.  Often in late afternoons, fogs would descend and there won’t be much of a view.  Your only consolation would be the teeth-clattering wind.
The place is gaining popularity here in Ilocos Sur and in our neighboring provinces like Abra and La Union.  Some riders from Baguio and Manila even take a detour to Quirino just to avail themselves of the sea of clouds without having to see one in Mt. Pulag.
For the hungry visitors, there’s a nearby store that offers hot water and cup noodles.  But of course, you can always bring your own coffee and snacks.  Just be sure to leave nothing but your footprints.  For a better outdoor experience, some visitors would even bring their camping tents and stay there overnight.
10. Hidden Garden
Tumblr media
The address is  008 Katipunan St, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.  Hidden Garden features a restaurant and a cafe in a relaxing setting filled with tropical plants and flowers, carved wooden sculptures, and lots of clay pots. Taste some local delicacies at the restaurant or just walk around the garden past a bonsai corner, an artificial grotto, and a large birdcage housing white cockatoos. You can also buy some plants and burnay jars--unglazed traditional pots typical for Vigan. So you must bring money and personal hygiene etc.

hi i think tumblr might have eaten my previous ask but i'm a yr 12 in england considering pharmacy. unfortunately i don't know anyone i could ask about it so could you tell me a bit about the good the bad and the dirty of being a pharmacy student in the uk please? i'm trying to convince my parents that this is what i want but they feel that i'm not well informed enough so just something from a former student's pov would be great
(if not and you just didn't want to answer i'm really sorry about this and you don't have to answer)
Hi! I am so so so sorry for not responding - I thought I had but my post seems to have vanished :/ Also, a pre-warning, this’ll be SUPER long if you really want the good, the bad, and the dirty. Also I wrote thoughts as I had them so this is not in a coherent order sorry haha. If you have any questions, please let me know and I’ll do my best to help, my final exam to become a pharmacist is a week away so I might not respond super fast because I am Dying but I’ll do my best!
TLDR- pharmacy is fab.
Okay first, in case you don’t know, pharmacy is 4 years. Then you do a pre-reg year when you work full time, then you sit your final exam, then you’re a pharmacist. They’re reviewing this after covid broke the system completely and left my year in a mess, but for now that’s what you can expect to get yourself into.
The good!!!
Pharmacy is super interesting!! Learning about how medicines affect the body and how the body affects the medicines is so interesting, and you’ll become an expert in medicines - what to use when, what shouldn’t be used together, and how to get the most benefit out of them.
You’re with all the other pharmacy students SO much that you end up with a really close-knit group of friends because you’re all together all the time in lectures/labs/etc
It has great job prospects - you have a masters degree. Be a community pharmacist, a hospital pharmacist, an industry pharmacist, teach pharmacy, quit pharmacy and do science, there are SO many options that you can do with a pharmacy degree! And, at the end of uni you’re basically guaranteed a job.
Because pharmacy is SO intense, you have a lot of contact time, so you’re getting your £9,250 worth! You can expect to be in classes pretty much 9-5 for the first year or so, it’s super busy so you learn time management pretty fast!
By the time you graduate they’ll have changed the system so much that I’m p sure you’ll be a prescriber on graduation, or the year after which is SUPER cool and means you have even more job opportunities open to you.
Pharmacy labs have so much variety - you have chemistry labs (the classic - make paracetamol, extract aspirin, use chemicals), biology labs (microbiology and physiology too so monitoring heart rate etc), and then pharmaceutics labs - my one true love. Making creams, making tablets, making all sorts of medicines which is so much fun
You also have dispensing classes where you’re essentially learning how to be a pharmacist, how to dispense, how to check medicines, how to make sure they’re safe, how to advise patients on how to use them which is super fun!
As well as labs and dispensing classes, you’ll also have normal lectures, seminars, workshops etc so it’s super varied with lots of learning methods. Also you get to go on placements to put your learning into practice which really really helps!
It’s great to actually be a pharmacist - I LOVE helping people and being able to make a difference to patients
In uni most modules are mandatory, so as well as knowing your friends well, you’ll know your lecturers well. By 4th year I got on so well with most of my lecturers, it’s like a pharmacy family
You get to use a mixture of science and clinical skills - you use the science from A levels and the start of your degree and build upon it to find out why drugs work and why they have x side effect and why you can’t use them in y people.
4 year course = extra year at uni = one more freshers week and one more year of not paying council tax and one more year of fun with your friends before real life
I couldn’t not mention the BPSA - it’s the British Pharmaceutical Students Association and they do events and a week long conference every year over Easter which is lit- you meet other pharmacy students from other schools of pharmacy and debate pharmacy, have guests talk to you, do workshops, get evening entertainment, it really is the best PLUS then you learn about the European version of the BPSA and can go abroad if you’re lucky!
Graduating with a masters with your best friends and the lecturers that supported you through 4 years of hard work is one of the best things to ever happen!!!!!! Fab achievement
The bad!
Pharmacy is really hard. It’s 4 years of hard work, then more hard work after you graduate. You need to be committed to pharmacy because it is LONG and HARD and you will undoubtedly have times that you want to quit. I did pharmacy whilst on a range of antidepressants (don’t worry, the depression came first - pharmacy isn’t THAT bad) and it was brutal at times. The workload is intense.
It’s really tiring - I remember a time in first year where I was in lectures all day, went home to eat, then went to the library all evening to revise for exams. Now I’m old I’m just tired and I don’t have the stamina for that but there are times where pharmacy will wear you out - but the successes are worth it.
Because it’s 4 years long, your non pharmacy friends will graduate before you. My campus was impossible to walk across without seeing someone you know, and then at 4th year that just ends because everyone leaves at 3rd year. And you feel really old because the freshers are 18 and excited about uni and you’re 22 and tired.
People don’t like pharmacists. That isn’t strictly true, but don’t read anything on facebook about pharmacists. The general public don’t know what we do and therefore they don’t like us and see us as the barrier between them and their medicines. Also if a medicine has been discontinued that is YOUR fault personally and the patient will tell you ‘if I die it’s your fault’ - usually over something stupid like heartburn meds. Don’t let it get to you though - the patients who appreciate us and say kind things really do make up for all the abuse.
You need a life outside pharmacy or it’ll get too much pharmacy- especially if you live with pharmacists too. You’re together 24/7 and that’s too much so make sure you join a sport or a society so you can talk to people about something other than medicines.
The dirty
People think you’re a wannabe medic. Medical students also don’t like pharmacy students - or maybe that was just my uni. We try and say pharmacy is hard that they will ALWAYS one-up us. Whatever, when they’re qualified and we save their ass catching a prescribing error, they’ll love us then
Everyone knows everyone in pharmacy. The other day I got really excited when I attended a webinar and one of the hosts was a guy who wrote one of my fave textbooks. It is a VERY small world, so make sure you’re hardworking and kind so people have the right impression!

Painting Tutorial
Disclaimers !!! (important)
I’m not an expert or teacher.
There is an infinite number of ways you can paint. THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO PAINT! This is how I do it / how I was taught to do it.
I’m doing this (during mars 2020) because I’m getting restless during the global quarantine. If you want to paint but you don’t have the supplies: PLEASE don’t go out to buy supplies. This is not a necessity so please stay safe. Also, if you’re considering buying art supplies on the internet ask yourself if it is necessary (like if you have an assignment/it’s part of your job/...) and try to minimize the strain on delivery services for non-essential supplies.
This post will still exist in a few months. I’ll even self-reblog it at the end of the lockdown so that, if you’re still interested, it’ll be here.
I’m going to make fan art for @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels (madsthenerdygirl on AO3) and her witcher fic “Even Steel Blades Need Fire” that you can find here.
I’m trying to make a non-spoiler piece, but I’ll talk about the fic (so spoilers!) during the process. If you have not read her fic and you don’t want to get spoiled, go read it before you continue.
I started painting two years ago, and I remember vividly my struggles in the beginning. Painting can be confusing, and I am going to assume that people with no experience are going to read this.
I’ll be explaining the painting process in-depth so LONG POST (I guess) and stay tuned for updates !!! (yay)
I think that’s all.
Let’s start !!!
Tumblr media
Here we have it all! All the supplies (and some) I use when painting with acrylic paint.
First, note that you don’t need all these supplies to paint. Most of the time I do it with less, but this is a tutorial so...
Tumblr media
1. Paper
Good news, you don't need to have a canvas to paint !!! You can just use paper (cool right?!).
Any size is ok, but I prefer to paint big (this paper here is on the smaller side. I usually paint on “grand aigle” paper or “double grand aigle”. Which translates to “great (?) eagle”. Look it up!).
Here I’ll be using a 65x50 cm piece (called “format raisin”/ “grapes format”...)
I advise to use 200gms (or 200g/m2) or more but 180g can work too.
225gms and 250gms are my personal favourites.
2. Something to protect the surface you are painting on.
when I started painting I was super messy. I had no control over the paintbrush/the paint/etc..
I recommend using something (cardboard, plastic bag (not the best...), or newspaper) to cover up where you're going to paint.
The smaller your paper, the more likely you are to spill paint next to it.
On that note, when I started painting I used to wear a chemistry lab coat to protect my clothes.
It can save you when you least expect it (read: the whole bottle of paint falls and explodes everywhere). Now I stopped doing that (bad) but I don't really care about my clothes and also painting in your underwear when you're alone is fun.
remember to remove any jewellery (RINGS!!!) (you don't want to scrape off dried paint of off jewellery).
Don't wear gloves. (acrylic paint washes of with soap and hot water). Plus gloves are going to make your hands sweat and I don't recommend wearing them for long periods.
have a towel nearby or something at your disposal (but only use old stuff. you will probably never get all the paint stains off. I use my old lab coat.)
where you are painting is important too. When I started painting I liked using an easel. If you don't have an easel, that's ok. I don't have access to one during this quarantine business, so I'm doing sans-easel.
Also, I prefer to paint on the ground or on a table (depending on the cleanness of the ground and the paper size. if it's too big for one table, I sometimes use two side by side but it's not really practical).
Also with bigger papers, an easel can be impractical = you can't reach the top/bottom easily and you tire very easily.
Here is something my teacher used to tell us:
“Don't sit on a chair.”
Explanation: when using a chair your paintings tend to look "tired" or "sloppy" (Idk how to describe it, but for better results try to stand up)
however if you are doing:
a big piece
painting for a long time
or you have medical issues that make standing up for a long time painful
then I recommend either having a chair nearby to take "sitting" breaks or painting on the ground.
In all cases take breaks!
Second advice from my teacher:
“Don't listen to music while you paint.”
Explanation: when painting you want to avoid "coloring" with brushstrokes that go left-right and up-down all the time. when listening to your music you will unintentionally start following the rhythm of the music with your strokes and making them repetitive. Similarly, I noted that I'm slower when listening to music because I tend to focus more on the music than on what I am painting.
BUT, I know someone who makes these beautiful, giant paintings on bedsheets, which take like weeks to complete and with lots of details. And guess what? Not only does she sit down but she also listens to music while doing so.
In conclusion, it's up to you. but if you struggle painting: try sitting down/standing up/ taking more breaks/ turn on/off your music...
3. Paint pallets
Ok, so here again it's up to personal preferences.
you can use a
plastic/wood/glass pallet (that you re-use every time)
or you can use
disposable paint pallets/a piece of cardboard/paper plates (that you reuse a couple of times before throwing away).
At first, I started to use plastic pallets but I kept trying to clean them at the end of each lesson and I was losing so much time... (note: I found that bigger pallets with no little "holes" work the best).
Problems:
If the paint is dry it’s super difficult to get it off without soap or other types of cleaning products.
You use a lot of water to clean it and paint gets in the sewers.
An alternative is disposable pallets like on the picture (or cardboard/paper plates). you don't have to clean them, it's super cheap/free and a lot lighter.
Problems:
you can't use them forever and will need to throw it away (or recycle them into weird paintings).
If you use straight-up cardboard and try to mix a lot of water in your paint it will make a mess and destroy your pallet.
4. Water dish
Anything that holds water and that you don't use to drink is ok. Remember you will probably never get all the paint off.
Tumblr media
5. Paintbrushes
Okay, this is the weird part where I tell you that "paintbrush" is "pinceau" in french and that the word comes from the Latin  "penicillum" which means "small tail" or "penis". Also, there's this text (of which I don't remember de name or the author) but it discusses the implication of artist's preferences for certain types of paintbrushes when you compare them to penises and it's silly and fun but now I need to talk about the paintbrushes I use and I don't want to make this awkward, so just forget what I just wrote there.
Let's see. I grouped and ranked each brush from A to G depending on how much I use them.
A) My personal favourites, that I use all the time: they are mostly round brushes.
There's a big one that's actually to paint walls but works well when I need to cover big surfaces
then a few tiny/flats with rounded tips for detail (called ”Filbert”)
a couple of medium/rounds
and this flat squared tipped (called “Flat” or “Bright”) for when I need to get clean edges.
B) Medium/flat and square tipped brushes I use the same way as the big round.
C) These ones I use when the others are already in use and I need a clean brush. the problem is that some of them have these synthetic bristles that are super bendy and I don't like it.
D) Some more small brushes for detail. I sometimes use them for watercolour because they can hold a lot of water. See how they have a shorter handle? Long handle = for easel painting (because then you can get further away). The small handle = not for easel painting.
To be honest I don't really care. it's not super important (but I prefer the long handle ones).
E) These are really tiny small round brushes that can be used for even smaller detail (but I don't use them a lot).
F) I never use this paintbrush. the bristles are super soft and fur-like and see how they're pointing outward instead of inwards, and don’t make a point? yeah, I can't do anything with that.
G) Please, PLEASE, for the love of god do not use these types of brushes with acrylic paint. they're for ink painting and calligraphy and other stuff. They're super expensive and a pain to wash. I've seen people use them with paint and I don't judge but personally, it just feels wrong to use them with paint.
General tips to keep in mind when buying brushes:
Size matters.
The bigger the better.
Hog bristles = texture + (in general) better quality + stiffer
Synthetic or nylon bristles = cheaper + bendier + smoother finish.
If you are getting a pack of brushes try to look for one with more of the bigger brushes than smaller ones.
You don't need every size but you need a couple under 10, one or two around 20 and one 30 or 40.
Brushes are expensive. Like, think book price range (where I buy them they are around 15 euro or around 20 euro).
Any free brush is a good brush.
Handles don't matter.
General tips to care for brushes:
Wash your brushes.
Use soap (dish soap is fine). I've seen people use shampoo and I'm sure it works but for acrylic paint (= water-based paint), it's a bit overkill.
Let them dry laying flat.
Don't let them sit too long in the water. you don't want to weaken the wood or glue or metal that is holding everything together.
Handles don't matter (just keep a picture or a reference of your brush before it gets covered in paint and you can't tell what size/brand it is anymore).
Tumblr media
6. Paint
The fun part!
Here are the colours I am going to use (I'm not using all the colours i have and I tried to make a varied but coherent pallet).
(from top to bottom, left to right.)
Titanium White (neo acryl, Gerstaecker, 102)
Black (neo acryl, Gerstaecker,704)
Prussian blue phthalo (acrylic standard series, Amsterdam all acrylics, 566)
Quinacridone pink (I love art, Gerstaecker, 350)
Reflex rose (I love art acrylic, Gerstaecker, 384)
Primary yellow (acrylic standard series, Amsterdam all acrylics, 275)
Raw sienna (acrylic standard series, Amsterdam all acrylics, 234)
Burnt sienna (acrylic standard series, Amsterdam all acrylics, 411)
Burnt umber (acrylic standard series, Amsterdam all acrylics, 409)
Vandyke brown (acrylic standard series, Amsterdam all acrylics, 403)
Carmine (acrylic standard series, Amsterdam all acrylics, 318)
General tips to keep in mind when buying paint, or how to choose colours when you don't want to spend too much on paint:
You CAN NOT paint with only primary colours !!!
NO magenta (it's like using 100% red. Also paint is pigment not light so magenta does not equal red)
Get more white and black paint (you can start with small quantities but these two getts used the most. I've also seen people buy "handyman paint" in white to get large quantities for cheaper but I never tried before.)
Pick darker colours over lighter ones
and pick lighter colours over mid-tones (I will go over this later when I start painting)
If you're like me and don't have tons of money to spend on paint, avoid paints with double colour names like "greenish-yellow", get yellow and get green and get white and then mix! (so you have green, yellow and everything in-between...)
When in doubt pick colours with:
fancy names (royal blue, ultramarine blue,...)
natural pigments names (cobalt, carmine, sienna,..)
well known names (TITANIUM white !!!)
artist’s names (Vandyke brown, Klein blue, ...)
Exciting and unusual names (what intrigues you? If you go: wtf is "Quinacridone pink?", "Phthalocyanine emerald"  "Vermillon?", then pick that.)
I know I said don't use primary colours but you NEED to mix colours. Go crazy! (note: straight from the tube colour can be used but in moderation or with good reasons..)
BUT You NEED brown, don't try to make it yourself
you DON'T need purple (I'll explain later)
(fluorescent colours can give you unexpected results when mixing. (I bought the fluorescent pink thinking I'd only use a small amount but now I'm kinda running out. And I don't even like pink that much...))
7. Something to pin down your paper
You only need this if you are going to work on something not horizontal.
Any type of pins (that can support the weight of the paper)
repositionable tape
or any kind of masking tape (that does not ruin paper when removed)
8. references
(The references on the picture are from another project.)
If you're not painting from life I recommend printing out your references over just having it on your phone or laptop or any screen, because
when you print them you are using pigment
and then when you are painting you're looking at pigment and not pixels/light.
So it's actually easier to SEE the colors you have to use (and it can improve your results when painting with PIGMENT).
Also, try to print them as big as you can.
Right now I don't have a printer with me and I can't, like, get it printed or anything (not only because of the lockdown but because this is witcher stuff I'm going to make so I'm going to need reference photos of the actors and everything... yeah, no).
I'm just going to have my refs on a screen...
Hope some of you made it this far. If so, congratulation!
(I tried to make this as clear as possible (English is not my first language and I struggle with writing)).

9
1 5/..
great deal of heavy rain during last night – up at 6 1/4 for 20 minutes then went to bed again feeling rather stiffish about my loins so many things to do today, gave up all thought of the Jardin du roi and lectures – wrote out the journal of Wednesday yesterday and so far of today till 10 – read over my letter to Marian written on Wednesday but dated today as is also my letter to Mr W– (Waterhouse)
‘my dear Marian I received your letter about a month ago (Monday 7th ultimo) but have not written more immediately, because, as I thought of going from home, I waited to tell you when and where, and because it was quite unnecessary to write particularly about Hampstead, as, from your not mentioning your plan till you had not only determined upon it but given orders for its execution, it was, of course, evident, that you neither felt the want of advice, nor cared to have any – Besides, tho’, this being in part my own concern, I am not, strictly speaking, bound to the promise I made you at your own especial request, never to advise or interfere with you about your affairs, yet, as it was, and is, too late to say anything, I am better pleased to make no comment at all, but merely to express my anxious hope that you will find your plans in this instance, as in every other, answer your expectations – …… trust you received all possible pleasure and advantage from your month’s absence from home’ –
my aunt will forward my letters –
‘I think of being off on the 15th tomorrow week, to the Pyrennees, with the party from the Embassy, and, if the weather is good, have no doubt of having a most agreeable tour – we shall go by Orleans, and Tours, and Bordeaux etc the route beyond B– (Bordeaux) not quite determined – How long we shall be absent, is uncertain – But it matters not – my letters will be forwarded.’
say I shall not write many letters in Travelling – they will hear all from my aunt – ….
‘we have exceedingly wet weather of late which had not quite well agreed with my aunt – her limbs are not so well as they were some months ago, and she cannot walk about well – However, she will have it, she is ‘well of herself’, and we have no physician’ –
wrote the ends of my letter to Marian and in mentioning bad weather here and everywhere, in the neighbourhood of the Pyrennees too, said ‘we shall probably get as far as Marseilles and Toulon – the coast of the Mediterranean will interest me much’ –

"I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW, WHAT I SAW THERE... I DON’T APPRECIATE IT.” His stern voice cut through the thick atmosphere inside his car as he drove off through the still night of downtown Manhattan. Adrian had come to pick her up for some official council business only to see some other kind of business he certainly wasn’t pleased about.
A huff came out of her lips, body shifting slightly on her seat, fingers fiddling unconsciously upon the leather surface of the seat belt. She tilted her head a bit, giving him a glance, divine features being illuminated with each street lights they pass by.
“What exactly is it that you don’t appreciate?” Amy asked, brows furrowed in slight indignance.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed him giving her a quick glance with a scowl plastered on his features as his grip on the stirring wheel tightened. However though, she remained silent, urging Adrian to answer.
There was a brief pause before she heard him pitch a strangled sigh, his shoulders slumping. The scowl on his face was adamantly replaced by statutory indifference. “I... Nothing.”
Scoffing at the usual answer he gives whenever he wanted to change the subject, Amy shook her head in dismay. “You see? This is what’s wrong here, Adrian. I can’t read you if you’re like this. How am I supposed to understand?”
She let out an exasperated noise as no further answers were provided by the other. However, the car slowly pulled down a curb to a stop. The silence was almost deafening she swore she heard crickets whistling in the air.
“Here we are.” With a cold, controlled voice, Adrian gestured over her window, showing that they successfully arrived home.
Her home. Her apartment. Not his suite nor his building.
With silent frustration and a very unpleasant mood, she gritted her teeth and threw a glare his way only to be answered by a slight cock of the head. He was about to open his mouth but she cut him off immediately with words she wished she never delivered. Words she actually never meant. “You know what, suit yourself. This is why I find Jax a better company than you.”
Without looking back, she got off the pristine sports car, slammed the door in his face and marched towards the entrance of her apartment building. With a soft click of the door and a sound of a car speeding away moments later, Amy released the breath she didn’t realize she was holding as she sunk to the floor quietly. Her vision welcomed her with nothing else but darkness.
Waking up to a blaring alarm was not how she imagined to find herself into as her body rolled over unfamiliar yet familiar surfaces. However, snippets of her rendezvous last night swallowed her as she shifted over to the side, seeing that nobody was there to convince her to get back to sleep while snuggling closer.
Adrian was not there.
She let out a weary huff whilst picking up her phone from the nightstand and cancelling another notification of her alarm. Squinting her eyes at the bright screen of her device, she clicked a few buttons and her message window popped up, advising her of some alerts she missed.
Lily... Lily... Kamilah... Jax... Jax...
Reading the names only made her stomach churn because there was not a single text message from Adrian. Deflated, she let her head fall back against the soft pillows, eyes now wide awake and rid of sleep. Maybe she overreacted last night?
A beep from her phone brought her back only to be disappointed to see that it wasn’t Adrian who’s calling. Obviously, he hasn’t spared an effort to contact her since.
“Hey,” she drawled, life obviously drained from her voice. Her ears perked in the soft sound of chuckle and buzzing background noises. “Where are you?”
“Eager now, are we?” Jax teased as he shuffled and moved to a quieter place. “Just wanna check on ya.”
“I’m still alive, Jax.” Amy joked only to find no humor in the statement. Alive, yes, physically. Emotionally? She felt dying a little.
“Ha-ha.” Jax humored as he cleared his throat. “So, uh... what’s up with you and Raines? You guys alright?”
Oh great.
“You could’ve just asked me a thousand questions and you had to ask that.” She sighed while sitting up, feet barely dangling on the wooden floor.
“No, seriously. He was pissed when he arrived. Dunno his deal but he shrugged me off.” Jax paused before sighing. “You know Amy, I stand by what I said. A lot of us lost important people over the course of our lives...” He drawled, unsure how to proceed. He took Amy’s silence on the other end to press forward. “It takes a little bit more patience to endure being... with us.”
“Yeah,” Amy breathed as she closed her eyes and mentally slapped herself for her tacky attitude. “I understand.”
He chuckled on the other line and spoke in a light tone, “Also could’ve sworn he might’ve been jealous last night.”
Choking on thin air and totally caught off guard by Jax’s statement, her eyes widened with realization.
Jealous? Was that the reason...? “Holy crap! I’m such an idiot!”
Jax laughed at the other line and she swore she almost saw him shaking his head. “I won’t go that far but you do seem a bit dense at times.”
“I need to go see Adrian,” She said in a hurry while running to her closet and pulling out a cardigan. “I just wish he’s not so mad at me.”
“Huh? What, hold on–”
“Bye Jax! Talk to you later!” Click.
Amy faced the mirror, smoothing her hair wild with curls from tossing and turning in her bed. The creases on her pajamas straightening as she ran a hand over them before putting on the cardigan.
Jealous? Was Adrian actually jealous?
Only one way to find out.
One taxi and elevator ride later, she found herself standing in front of his guest suite inside Raines Corporation, fingers shaking and hesitating to knock on the smooth wooden door. But before she can even debate her decision, there was a soft click and the door opened in front of her. On the doorway, Adrian stood sharply with nothing else but his pants on. His eyes bore with hers, carefully reading her mood before stepping aside to let some space.
“I heard you outside.” He said softly, tired eyes smiling a bit. “Come in.”
“Uh... hi?” Amy sheepishly smiled while taking tentative steps closer. Adrian distanced himself a bit, careful of not getting close as he moved to shut the door behind her. This gesture alarmed her in many ways as she slowly walked inside. Familiar scent knocked her senses awake, her body suddenly aching to feel Adrian this instant.
She jumped a bit when she heard him talk while taking long strides towards his kitchen counter. “Can I entertain you with something to drink?” Her eyes scanned the room and took note of a few discarded empty bottles of wine.
“Have you been drinking?” Her voice came out as a whisper, concern and worry overtaking her tone. She bit her lip, fighting from automatically throwing herself at him while nursing his wounds in the process. Enough of that. She needs to prove something first.
“Yes... I seem to be having a hard time falling asleep.” Adrian shrugged as he handed her a wineglass filled halfway. He drank his portion in one go before focusing on her. His stormy hues were now looking at her directly for the first time that night. “What brought you over, Amy?”
“I...” Carefully choosing her words, she took a deep breath before squaring her shoulders with renewed determination. Adrian quirked his brow and a small, playful smile tugged on the edge of his lips. But as quick as it arrived as quick as it went. Now, he looked blank and curious.
His silence urged her to speak.
“I wanted to apologize for... my unruly behavior last night.” She began, hands fumbling on the edge of the glass she’s holding. She slowly rocked the item as the contents gently sloshed around. “I’ve said words... I didn’t particularly mean. I take it back. I’m sorry.”
“Hmm.” Adrian hummed, strong muscular arms gripping the edge of the counter top tightly. His eyes closed as his eyebrows scrunched. Then, when he looked at her, his stare was filled with nothing but lament. “It’s not your fault, believe me. I somehow contributed to the cause of your upset mood. I’m sorry, too.”
“What of it? I’m sure I’m mostly at fault here, Adrian.” She argued, eyes now trying to lock his own. Her mouth searched for words but her mind forced her to stay quiet and let him speak his mind.
“It’s mine, Amy. I... may have imposed on you too much. Realizing that I, myself is the one who actually needs to sort out his emotions.” He sighed as he stood straight and walked over to where she was standing. “I didn’t mean to put you into a very promising position these past months.”
“Huh? Promising?” Unsure of what he meant, she asked. Her gaze darted to his arms as she felt him gently squeeze her shoulders, the look on his face an utter dismissal of matters. Without a moment’s notice, Adrian took the wineglass off her hand and placed it on top of a flat surface.
“This relationship... should’ve stayed where it was supposed to be in the very beginning.” Voice cracking and resolve trickling down, Adrian forced himself to look Amy in the eye, a flash of guilt, worry, sadness, pain, dismay and jealousy all mixed in one agonizing stare.
Feeling her heart ramming madly against her chest, she moved over to him and carefully locked their fingers together, holding Adrian’s gaze in hopes of negating whatever it was that he was going to say. She had a very bad feeling about this.
“Adrian, I don’t understand.”
“I... I should’ve strictly imposed that you and I stayed professional about everything. Not... not this mess that we’re in right now.” He gave her a longing look before removing his hand on her hold.
“Mess?” Amy repeated in complete and utter shock. Her eyes widened with fear upon realization of where this conversation was exactly heading. He’s cutting her off before anything serious even began!
“You think what we have is a mess?” She replied incredulously, the words sounding more ridiculous as she repeated it over. He remained silent as he turned around and distanced himself, avoiding her gaze in the process. She stalked towards him, angry stomps echoing in the marbled floor of the room.
Her hand gripped his lean biceps tightly, noticing the extra stress in his muscles. She felt Adrian shiver at the graze of her palm on his skin and that immediately caused her to feel tingles all over her body.
“Adrian. Look at me, please.” Amy pleaded as she walked around to face him. His eyes were tightly shut in control of something. She took this opportunity to cup his face into her hands all the while tiptoeing to plant a small kiss on his lips. Adrian blinked in surprise as their gazes met in one electrified moment.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I said all those words. I didn’t mean it. I value your companionship more than anyone else. I value your opinion above anyone else. I value you more than anyone else.” She reasoned out, fingers gently brushing his cheeks. Adrian heaved a shaky breath as his shoulders relaxed after a long tension. Gently, Amy wrapped her arms around his neck, planting yet again a feathery kiss.
“I... you as well. I feel strongly for you, Amy.” Adrian swallowed as he forced himself to hold back whatever he was feeling. He didn’t move to wrap his arms around her. He didn’t return the kiss. He didn’t devour her right then and there when she was so openly willing. It took all his willpower to restrain himself. “You’re different. You make me question my views. You challenge me. You push me to do the right things– things that I should’ve done and never lost track a long time ago. And I... I can’t afford to trap you with me. I wouldn’t wish that kind of life for you.”
“Oh Adrian...” Amy bit her bottom lip while brushing off wild locks of hair on his forehead. “You know I don’t think that way... you’re all I’m crazy about these days.”
There was a long pause as both of them stared into each other’s eyes before Adrian cut her short. He heaved a frustrated sigh as he stepped away from her, causing her resolve to crumble down in an instant. “You should go home. It’s late. I’ll arrange a car to drive you home.”
Mad, dejected, rejected and extremely upset, Amy whirled in front of him, tears threatening to spill from the corners of her eyes. She tried blinking them back but they wouldn’t listen. Fresh batch of hot tears streamed down her face, realizing that she’s been holding back since last night. There was a look of complete aghast on Adrian as he tentatively reached out to her only to catch himself midair.
“Fine. You wanna be that way? Then go ahead. You know what I think? You’re afraid to love because deep inside, you know you feel the same way that I do, Adrian.” She hissed while angrily wiping her wet cheeks. “And if you haven’t spelled it out yet, I’m in love with you... and now that might’ve been the worst decision I’ve ever made in my entire life.”
“Amy, wai–” But before he can even interject, she turned away sharply, the momentum of her movement knocked off the wineglass that sat atop a sidetable. Her hand was caught in the middle as fresh blots of blood dripped from the open wound in her hand. The sting was incredibly painful but her broken heart was even more so.
“Fuck,” she hissed while cradling her hand near her chest, unsure of where the pain is actually coming from. Chest or wound? Could be both. She sank to her knees while clutching her wound while trying to press it against her cardigan’s cloth, hoping the bleeding would at least stop. “Fuck this.”
“Amy!” In an instant, Adrian was on her side, a look of sorrow and regret reigning on his countenance. His eyes glistened with unwept tears as he crouched down to her level, hands gently tugging her injured hand. He looked at her for a moment, pained surrender flashing through his orbs as if he was asking for permission. “Let me see...” She only nodded as an answer and remained silent, too drained to retort nor argue. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”
Adrian tugged and gently removed her cardigan that was stained with blood. Weak and tired from the aftermath of their fight, she resigned herself in his presence, the twin pain of heartbreak and open wound weakening her state. Her eyes gently took all of Adrian in front of her, his stormy hues now blazing red in color. She felt herself shudder at the sight of this beautiful man in front of her – all reign and glory but soft and unassuming. His blazing red eyes locked with hers before his fangs protruded as he slowly dipped in to lick the blood off of her hand.
There was always a sensual reason about feeding with consent. And part of those reasons were probably having a VIP seat in watching a gorgeous man up close, licking her hand clean of blood all the while looking immaculately delectable.
“Amy...” Adrian’s gaze fleeted back to her, red eyes burning with carnal hunger and uncontrollable desire. He tore a slight wound on his skin and let his blood heal her wounds without tearing his gaze from her. His muscles flexed as he gently placed a kiss on the area of where the gash was slowly starting to patch up.
Her face flushed at how evident his lust shown. He hovered over her, both their bodies sinking low against the hard surface. He trailed light kisses from her fingers to her wrist to her arm and up to the crook of her neck, fangs grazing just ever lightly along the way. Amy inhaled sharply while she watched him ever so engrossed in kissing her skin. And when he was finally only inches away from her face, Adrian gave her a stare heated enough to melt even the sturdiest armor in existence.
“You’ve always fascinated me.” He breathed, lips now only inches away from hers. His gaze flicked from her eyes and to her lips and back again. There was a cocky smirk on his face as he used his index finger to tilt her chin up and meet his melting gaze upfront. “I’ve wanted you strongly enough that I’m afraid I will devour you clean, Amy... and nothing will be left of you.”
She released a rattled breath, raising her other arm to touch the side of his face. Whatever intensity he was giving right now, she was sure to return ten times fold. “Maybe... maybe I’m more willing to provide more than what I could give...”
And in one swift motion, she was now up against his body, legs wrapped around his waist, mouths syncing with one another in a fiery and passionate exchange of kisses.

What systemic racism in the British beauty industry looks like
Remember when Black Lives Matter content filled up the feeds of your preferred social platform? While the message still burdens many within the black community — as well as some allies — on a daily basis, for many it is business as usual; even one of my regular online beauty go-to’s has that in their homepage banner. I’m sure it’s more about things being back to ‘some kind’ of normal post-Covid, but who knows? To me, it seems like everyone is tired and weary of the triggering message of BLM and I believe that’s a sign that, if systems are not changed, things are likely to return to what they used to be, the word diversitybecoming one of those words people say out loud while using air quotes. I’ve already written about my own personal experience as a mixed/black woman in the beauty world, but I wanted to try and tackle the systems within the beauty industry. If I’ve missed anything, let me know!
Brands/Agencies Throughout the early days of BLM, brands and agencies around the globe paid close attention to where their ads were appearing. It wasn’t a moral stance however; brands had learned that ads placed near George Floyd or protest-related content, monetized at 57%* lower than other news content. The investment simply wasn’t worth it and words/phrases such as Black Lives Matter, George Floyd, Minneapolis and Black people were put on industry blocklists. While blocklists surely began as a way for the industry to ensure it wasn’t placing insensitive ads, in 2020 brands are using them purely because of the bottom line; revenue.
For me, the brands that have stood out during BLM are the ones that are more thoughtful in how they can help, long-term. Praise was given to Emily Weiss of Glossier for starting a grant for black-owned beauty businesses. Another stand-out show of support came from Caroline Hirons, a brand in her own right.
Hirons is known as the queen of skincare amongst the UK press — and she knows that is a very white press. She took a few days to get her ‘ducks in a row’, early on when BLM was being heavily supported, ensuring her donations were able to have Gift Aid applied (more of the cash actually going to the organisation), before announcing that she would be giving 100 percent of the 2020 proceeds from her best-selling Double Cleanse with Pixi to Black Lives Matter. Pixi duly matched her donation.
But for every positive there were several embarrassing examples of how notto do it. I don’t have the time or energy to give a comprehensive list of just how many brands got it so wrong during the days that followed #blackouttuesday for instance.
I’m not about forcing anyone to do anything, because if you don’t care, why would I want your help? For me the blame lays with brands who have the means to send out the right messages on the daily via social and in the media. It wasn’t just about calling out RMS Beauty on their Instagram for hiring such an insensitive social media manager. It was more about checking out the feeds of Maybelline, Chanel Beauty, etc, etc, and seeing if they had ever shown diversity in their campaigns. The results were lacklustre to say the least, but, if there was one truly classic example of what not to do, the medal would go to Marcia Kilgore (founder of Beauty Pie, Fit Flop, Bliss). I’ve been a diehard fan of Kilgore and her work ethic for years and I’ve lost count of how many interviews I’ve listened to of Kilgore sharing her business journey.
But throughout BLM I’ve seen some shockers coming from (seemingly) Kilgore’s own hand. I’ve been sent screenshots of comments on Instagram (later deleted) including one that shows Kilgore using the shrugs emoji. One of Beauty Pie’s diehard (white) fans just didn’t get why Beauty Pie was receiving negative feedback after not standing up soon enough or strongly enough for BLM. Kilgore replied to her fan with the shrug — she might as well have said: ‘gee, we just can’t seem to please these people.’
The Influencer Whether you love influencer culture or not, it’s clear that, for now, it’s here to stay. Mostly dominated by (white) women, with some being worth over £4million here in the UK, whatever their chosen area of specialisation, there seems to be a very cookie-cutter approach as to what and who’s adored and accepted. Look at wellness, look at fashion, and of course, beauty, and you’ll find that the popular accounts are usually owned by very blonde, very slim women. Life is just one long Instagram Story compiled of working out in Lululemon, wearing makeup from an expensive brand that’s never looked past 10 shades, sipping an iced green tea and getting your wedding paid for by your clever agency rep who’s reached out to countless companies that are guaranteed to find you so palatable and on-brand.
Now, I am not coming for these women; these women can exist alongside the women that I choose to follow — the women that can and do in fact influence me and how I purchase, whether they get paid or not. And there’s the rub. Brands have been making tons of excess profits from women of colour who just love that brand — essentially unpaid micro influencers.
As a self-confessed beauty addict, I know the allure of the ‘next big thing’. I know how it is when you feel, or felt, that that brand actually understood you. When that new shiny purchase arrives from the likes of Glossier, you’re like, ‘hey friend’, and off you go, sharing your unboxing for your fellow beauty enthusiasts to swoon over in the comments.
Like I said, many true beauty influencers are micro influencers, doing their thing purely for the love, and not a pay check, but that’s in sharp contrast to those who are actually paid to do so. These paid influencers put in the work, styling their stories to appeal to their audience and also the audience of the brand that’s paying them.
One such influencer, someone I’ve been following a while as I enjoyed her fresh aesthetic, is also a PR. To be fair to her, I’d become so used to seeing her bounce across fields of tulips and daisies, that I wasn’t expecting anything from her when it came to ‘real life’. However, I did happen to see her Instagram Stories late one night, where she ‘appeared’ to be crying about BLM. I say appeared because honestly, I’ve seen better performances at my nephew’s nativity play. I even recorded the crying just to check I wasn’t being too dismissive.
The next day I saw that she’d finally posted an image she’d found elsewhere (i.e. not spent time creating) and given information on how to donate and research. It all seemed very rushed and frankly, I imagine that zero attention was given to the words. I wondered if she’d been pressured to post, and apparently she had been, after being tagged in a post that prompted people to call out influencers and brands who weren’t stepping up.
She dutifully posted a black square when it was ‘expected’ of her on #blackouttuesday — which she has since deleted.
On top of that, behind the scenes she was contacting various bloggers — I can’t confirm race ratios. She sent DMs that did not address the individual, did not ask the person how they were doing at this truly tiring and stressful time. Instead she asked if they were supporting black-owned brands (she asked this of a mixed-race woman who identified as black and had been posting tons of information on her Stories…) Clueless, lazy — or worse?
She mentions in the DM that one of her clients is a black-owned business and asks if the blogger might be interested in talking about it. The following day I kept wondering, ‘okay, if you’re so supportive, why not post about this black-owned brand on your own feed?’ Or, how about you offer your services to black-owned businesses at a reduced rate? Not because you should, but because, after all, you are performing as if you care.
**Dominique, a black, London-based PR shared her thoughts on how her frequent social media support of a beauty brand (self-created and not paid for, purely because she wanted to), soon started to feel as if she was being treated as a token when she was shown as the only black face in the company’s newsletter. She also tells me of a black influencer in the UK who had been promised payment for several pieces of promo work and yet had gone unpaid and ignored. It wasn’t until her loyal followers bombarded the brand’s social media platforms that the brand paid her, in full, with no argument, or apology.
“It’s so intrinsic, and so embedded,” says Dominique. “Whether it’s content creation or Instagram — which is the first port of call for every business — it’s also the tech, it’s the algorithms used. It’s the influencers, it’s the appropriation, it’s the fact that black influencers aren’t on PR lists, and aren’t being paid the same rates.”
Dominique also talks of the pressure of ‘black guilt’ that black influencers and creators can feel: “You kind of hope and root for the brands that you spend your money on, that you will see a change. And then also, you kind of assimilate in your feed to try and see if that’s gonna help you build a following. I’ve done it. Black people have learned to compartmentalise to survive and it comes down to assimilating and trying not to broadcast your blackness.”
The PR I think, in some ways, the power of the beauty industry PRs often goes unnoticed. These are people who are in the business of carving out a niche for a brand, making it the ‘next big thing’; they advise clients on everything, from tone of voice to the right faces to use in an ad campaign to which influencers to send product to, and which influencers to offer lucrative ambassadorships to.
As most UK PR firms are owned by white men and women, it’s easy to see why inclusivity might not even enter their heads. Why would it? Let’s not forget, for decades the ideal beauty has been that of a very Eurocentric look. PR firms, alongside the rest of the industry, play their part in affirming this beauty standard — it isn’t their job to actually change it. But with more and more voices calling for change, and in the era of cancel culture, PRs are likely to be forced into taking a more active role.
For example, the labeling of BLM being a political rather than human issue by the head of CrossFit was clearly a PR nightmare of huge proportions, and no-one in the multi-billion dollar beauty industry wants that to happen to them. As a recent article on the Business of Fashion stated; too often public relations execs go along with what their client wants, and if ever they do try to steer the client in another direction they are often left unsupported or removed from the account completely.
The Magazines As someone who’s been a hair and beauty editor and writer for 15 years, I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go. But one trend that remains the same is that of the ‘spot the black journo in the room’. While things may be slightly more progressive in the US, here in the UK I can say that I have never seen more than three black or non-white journalists at a press event at the same time. And don’t get me started on the staff within the publications themselves.
I remember when former British Vogue editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman shared an image of her team in celebration of her last issue in 2017 — with not one black or brown face. I had long stopped my subscription to British Vogue, but when her replacement, Edward Enninful arrived, the man who had inspired me for years during his time at i-D magazine, I bought each issue with renewed excitement; oh how things would change!
But Enninful is one black man. And when Enninful himself is racially profiled while entering the doors of Conde Nast, you know that the problem goes way deeper. Add to that the fact that Vogue is still going to have to bow to its advertisers — the brands that keep it in print. It’s not us with our £2 ‘special price’ purchases that are keeping Vogue and others like it alive.
Elsewhere on Instagram, former Glamour editor Jo Elvin was bemoaning the fact that it wasn’t always the editor’s fault that there were no black models on the cover. Elvin said that black models often declined being on the cover (am guessing maybe it was because it was a pretty crap magazine back then?) because they ‘thought it would hurt their chances of getting covers with the high-end mags’.
And what is wrong with that? It’s far tougher for a black woman to get a Vogue cover, so if that’s that model’s goal, what’s it to Elvin and her crew? Perhaps they could seek out an unknown, rather than relying on the top three black faces over and over? Thankfully, Elvin was prompted to elaborate on her flippant comments, by none other than the aforementioned Caroline Hirons. Hirons ended by telling Elvin that the numbers don’t add up, and that bias is ‘systemic in Conde.’
I remember once going for a meeting with an online brand I avidly read. Naturally I was excited and flattered to be told: ‘you look so [insert brand name here]!’ as if I had just earned a special badge. Aside from the flattery, it really meant a lot to me and I was genuinely excited at the opportunity to write and shoot for them. I left the building buzzing, but over the coming weeks, my numerous pitches seemed to fall on deaf ears. ‘Hmm, she’s probably really, really, busy,’ I told myself.
Weeks later I noticed a new name on their writer roster and wondered if the fact that she was also mixed race was something to do with it; perhaps two was one too many? I think this is something we see and fear in many industries, but especially within fashion and beauty. While a non-black editor might enjoy being seen as the progressive one, he or she might also be nervous of ‘opening the gates’ and only employing non-white people! I’ve heard this from several black and brown people in the industry also. Once you get that role, you want to keep it both for career and financial reasons.
It’s clear that, across the board, work needs to be done, and we also need the work that is supposedly being done, to continue. It makes me nervous to see brands jumping on the Diversity Officer job role, while only offering six-month contracts. Does this mean that they hope BLM will just go away and people will just stop expecting their voices to be heard and their rights acknowledged? Are we all just so nostalgic over what normal used to be that we’d rather enter another year with blinders on?
It’s okay to admit that you’re completely unprepared for this fight. If you’ve never had to care about this fight, I get that. But whether you chose to use #blackouttuesday to gain some new fans, or you actually wanted to begin making lasting change, it’s clear, it’s going to take a lot more than a black square followed by vague epithets. Show the work; talk to your audience. Literally no-one can claim to be perfect right now, but if you want to build an anti-racist brand, take the steps, because we are all watching.

__________________
________
The young adolescent female grips the seat under her as she listens to her boyfriends confession. Her facial expression was more shocked and hurt than angry. As she continued to listen to Zach's Words on how he and Hannah had become more than friends during the summer Y/n was gone. The young female bit her lip and quietly left the room.
....
..
"Damn it Dempsey.." She silently cried in her room clutching the plush that Zach had gifted her. "Why did you go and cheat on me?" She sniffed still upset about the confession. Suddenly there were gentle knocks at her door.
"Y/n? Sweetie? Zach is here to see you!" The Teen's mom had called to her. The girl crying from earlier had cleared her voice to sound normal and responded.
"I'm a little busy tell him to come back at a later time!" She had curled up into a ball and silently cried into. After a few hours of being on the cold now warm floor, Y/n then stopped crying and wiped her tear stained face.
"Im not just going to stay here crying.. I have to take my mind off of this.." I mumbled getting off the now warm floor. The girl changed into a black tank top, a red flannel and blue shorts. She slipped on purple ankle socks and black hightops. She walked out the front door and walked the streets of crestmont. Her feet led her towards Rosie's an old fashioned diner that she regularly attended only for her favorite drink. A Vanilla milkshake which she had only shared with ..
.Zach..
She walked through the doors and sat at her usual booth and ordered her Vanilla milkshake. "Hey you mind if I sit with you Y/n?" A familiar Voice asked. The girl looked up at the owner of the voice none other than Clay Jensen.
"No go ahead! At least your not a heart breaker Clay.." The broken girl had mumbled to herself. The Milkshake had soon arrived in their awkward moment of silence. The tension became thicker the longer it was silent so the male had now began to speak. "Hey Y/n I'm really sorry about what happened during the trials.. you don't deserve that.." He said cracking a small smile. She looked up at him after playing with her straw smiling for once. She then Laughed. "Hey Thanks Clay.. your a really good friend.. at least you know how to cheer a girl up" she smiled at him making him blush. The girl sat up more comfortably looking at him.
"Well if you need me I'll be around the halls of Liberty! Just call for Clay!" He chuckled. The girl stopped her sip and stiffled a laugh. He smiled at the actions of his friend as she laughed at hjs awkward attempt of a joke.
Little did they know someone was watching them.
------
It was now morning and students bustling through the halls of Liberty High. The Young girl who was so broken hearted was now smiling again and hanging with her friend. "Clay! Hey! You wanna watch a movie sometime? Just as friends!" The now happy female chirped. Clay looked at his female friend and nodded.
"Sure! That'd be fun! But I don't think your boyfriend would like that.." He motioned to the said male across the hall glaring daggers at Clay. The girl turned to the male and sighed apologetically. Zach being caught glaring then looked at something else either around or at a locker.
"Clay? Should I forgive him? I know It was one sided but..-" She sighed looking at him for amswers. The male put up both arms mid air showing that he was hiding nothing. "Hmm.. Well thats honestly up to you! If you want to go ahead I'm only tired of his glares." The male friend had sighed. The girl smiled at his words and hugged him.
"I think its time to forgive him Clay" She spoke softly and pulled away from ths hug only to walk ober towards the circle of jocks.
"Hey look its Y/n are you here to tell Dempsey your not his cheerleader anymore?" The Baseball player named Bryce Snickered. The small female rolled her eyes at his words. Her hand reached out for the Larger hand and pulled him along getting out of the circle of jocks.
"Y/n look I'm so sorry.. fuck.. you deserve someone better than me.." He started and only looked at the ground. He rambled on not thinking about the usual filter he had on when he was with friends or family. We soon stopped outside and were near a couple of wooden tables with benches surrounded by trees.
"Zach... The only reason I left you...us.... this relationship.. was because This was all one sided after the summer.. Hannah had ignored me and so had you.." I started rubbing my arms with my hands looking at a tree. He gasped softly. "I felt Like I wasn't good enough for you. .. Even after what happened between you two.. you never even bothered to stop and tell me... not even my own friend..am I that much of an embarrassment to you?" I weakly said tears finding their way out of my eyes. I heard the crunch of the leaves and familiar shoes infront of me.
"Hey.. Your not an embarrassment.. I'm sorry that I've ignored you for so long.. it's just.. I thought with you gone that I would.. try and get over it.. but hannah came along.. and I still have her note.. I never threw it away.. I never bothered to tell you because I didn't want you to think.. oh god.. I'm screwing this up again aren't I?" He rambled on running a hand through his hair. He kneeled to look me in the eye and could only take my hands in his still rambling on.
I smiled at his words and cupped his face with my hands. His eyes looked into mine with utter confusion at my sudden action. "Zach thats now why I came to talk to you.. I camt to talk to you because I.. Still want to forgive you.. I know that only happened once but.. I want us to be honest from now on alright?" I softly whispered only so he was able to hear. Suddenly I was now buried in his chest his arms around me tight.
I hugged his hugs frame that my arms could barely wrap around. I nuzzled into his black shirt that he wore under his baby blue Letterman jacket that I clutched my hands on.
"Y/n.. I want you to know that this wont be just one sided anymore alright I'll love even harder than before! Better then ever! I'll love you just like you have.."

HELLO INTERNET SO I HAVE A QUESTION AND IT IS MULTI-LAYERED AND ABOUT TRANSLATION AND LOCALIZATION BUT MOSTLY
YAGI TOSHINORI
So. I have a theory of sorts.
I know we all quibble over dub vs sub. I am a sub ho, I will readily admit. I worship the ground and the microphones on which the Japanese VA’s do their thing. The dub is undeniably well-executed, but the fact remains that the voice actor’s performance and the translation/localization/efforts to lip-sync result in some ... pretty different characterizations that can cause concept drift within the show itself.
I have an Issue with American Might, or what I’ve seen of him. It’s an entirely different Dad IMDSO (in my dad-stanning opinion), and I wonder how much of it is official or unofficial translators localizing their efforts toward American culture and masculinizing/derpifying him in order to appeal to, admittedly, a country of derps. I tried to watch the dub and lasted about three episodes because of All Might’s sophomoric, aggressive dude-bro energy (please please I could have gone roughly forever without hearing the “Oh my, oh my OH MY GOODNESS!” hero of my heart shout “hoLy frEAakin’ suPer CRAP” like ahhhhHHHHHH KILL IT WITH FIRE).
But here’s the thing: I understand that this is a part of him!!!
Yagi does flip back and forth between jaunty, dramatic, hard-headed hero that’s kinda desperately trying to stay young and hip, and fretting older guy who hides behind gifts that he’s too shy to give as per the latest Vigilantes chapter (which isn’t directly from horikoshi’s pen but come on we all squealed). However, the American version seems to hype up his dude self in the anime and the soft fretter that is Small Might/Yagi becomes a tired, brash, flat-affect tower of coughing and bad jokes that you’d find in a back room at a boxing meet and that is fucking WEIRD TO ME. Like, weird to the point where I want to APOLOGIZE to any BNHA exclusive-dubbers who read my fic, because?????? what????? who is this soft old man who needs to be dommed into the ground where are we who is the president
When Yagi loses his mantle after Kamino and comes to watch the kiddos train, Midnight specifically says something like “well your style of talking has certainly changed” so it’s obvious he’s become less formal since, but I get confused on the gap between translations, the actual presence of intended dudebro in the original material, the existence of dudebro-ness in Japan (??), and am trying to figure out how to parse How Soft Yagi Toshinori Actually Is!(???????)
So, take these three translations (I’m afraid I only know that the last one is from MangaStream, I poached the other two off the internet, if anyone knows their source please hmu).
The first one is “my” Yagi: characterized with softness and helplessness, kind of a “he protest too much” situation. The other ones ...  they’re just rude no matter if they’re jokes? Like, they’re mean and a little sophomoric, and trashing on Deku, which does not vibe with how he’s characterized elsewhere. (Let’s not even address the highly specific adultery joke with aizawa there, my erasermight heart knows which one is true lol).
So ... has anyone else noticed this characterization gap and the weird, exhausting thing it potentially suggests about compulsive masculinity in America?
Does anyone have knowledge of the Japanese culture/connotation inherent in Yagi’s characterization that may have caused this split? I understand that translation is TRICKY BUSINESS but I need to know because I think it reflects deeply on how masculinity is portrayed/valued/prioritized in both cultures and how Horikoshi is attempting to subvert masculinity with Deku and the entire story etc etc etc! Is the American translation office missing the goddamn point? IS YAGI AS SOFT AS I THINK HE IS OR AM I MISSING SOMETHING???? SOMEONE MORE INTELLIGENT THAN ME PLEASE ADVISE AHHHHH

I think a master list for long term roleplayers is such a good idea! I think if it delineates the reasons someone would do long term over short term, and makes sure to not prop up one style over another, it could go over well. I just wonder what a roleplayer would have to do to be listed. Rp a muse for over two years? Have a declaration they don't easily lose muse and keep muses for a long time by default? I think that's the hard part, because it would be easy to exclude people if done wrong.
Hey, Anon!
Well, I'll let you in a secret...I might have begun that project this weekend. So, it might (absolutely will be) be happening, and this message certainly made me feel good about it!
It also brings up some incredibly valid points I hadn't thought about, like how one would go about specifically designating RPers as long-term. As you said, it's got a potential problems for exclusion, and the only exclusion intended is simply not being a dedicated, long-term RPer.
I think the only fair way of doing it is to let the muns themselves decide. As it presently stands, the idea is to submit the answers to a form that does ask "RP experience (years and places)." I thought that might help muns field each other better, and now, I think it might be the fairest way of determining what "long-term" means to everyone.
If you feel like someone who has been RPing for two years with the same muse(s) is long-term enough, then it is! If that's not enough to hit your mark of long-term, no hard feelings even happen because you just keep scrolling the list to someone who has been RPing for ten.
I'll be rewording the question to have two parts, thanks to this ask! It'll now read something like, "How long have you been RPing (includes tumblr and other RPCs)? Has this been the same muse/handful of muses (what's your longest time RPing a muse)?"
That way, you're also not running into issues like...well, let's use me as an example. I've been RPing online for over twenty years, but have only been RPing on tumblr for seven. I've had one muse for almost seventeen years, but another one only for that seven years. If I was to answer just with my presence here on tumblr with that muse, that's far shorter than my total time RPing and doesn't include that I'm long-term enough to have had a muse for seventeen years. This way, I could customize my answer and give a fuller one.
I know we all tend to think of tumblr's RPC as rarely taking on new muns these days, but I meet them fairly often. None are new to written, online RP, but they've only just joined this RPC. I certainly don't want anyone to feel like they have to answer "six months" when that isn't entirely an accurate representation of their experience and interest.
The questions are also not overly skewed toward any single type of RP outside of the umbrella of "Dedicated." Meaning long-term, primary hobby/dedicated interest RPers who stick with threads and muses. So, while, yes, a lot of us are also into long replies, it's not excluding those who write less either. It asks your style(s) and gives the options of "sentence, para, multi-para, novella, lengthy novella." You can, obviously, put multiple answers in as to what you prefer to write!
Some additional things it asks for:
links you'd like to include (rules, promo, carrd, docs, bio, other)
types of RP concentrated on (angst, slice-of-life, canon-involved, AUs, romance and shipping, friendships, horror, etc.)
your URL(s), obviously!
blog type (single-muse, multi-muse)
muse/primary muses' names (if this is a multimuse blog with all muses in one place, if not, please designate which goes with which URL)
mun age/age range and age requirements
other things about your blog/RPing/muse(s) (hard limits, crossover friendly, OC friendly, plot-driven, selectivity, etc.)
I really want to give the widest variety possible of dedicated RPers the opportunity to put themselves out there if they desire, since it truly is incredibly hard to find each other anymore. And I believe that since such phrasing tends to be a turn off for those who are more casual RPers, that alone cuts down on the likelihood of me having to message someone and tell them that they might not qualify.
I do plan to actually look at the blogs, though that is definitely going to annoy some and take more time to get people's submissions posted. It isn't because I am remotely interested in being judgmental of anyone's blog, writing, muses, or whatever! It's...tumblr. In 2021. Leaving anything up to an honor system is asking for trouble, and as we've seen in the not too distant past, very unfortunately, no matter what one says, the effort they go to in order to not rub people the wrong way, if someone wants to misread negativity into something, they will. Any time you have the topic of types of RP or broach it being at all acceptable to have preferences, requirements, expectations, and so on, it can turn quite ugly quite quickly.
It is a serious concern that those determinedly offended parties will misuse the listing. While seeing too many red flags of harassment on a blog doesn't retroactively stop them from seeing the list of RPers, it does at least prevent them being on it. That is absolutely within the rules, too, that this is not a place that is friendly/tolerant of any manner of policing and resultant harassment.*
*There will be a harassment policy. I realize that any listing can be used inappropriately, and I realize, too, that there is a limit to what I can do to cultivate and maintain a safe place...but that needs to be done in so far as possible and taken seriously. Callout culture is absolutely not allowed, period. That won't be added to the list, if it's engaged in and I'm aware of it, it'll be a removal from the list. Inappropriate use of the list as a callout resource will result in blocking, harassing others to RP with you when you've been politely declined will result in blocking. Yes, that can be subverted, but the stance matters.
And, obviously, I'd also be looking for anything really glaring like the basic (and it's my intention to make it as clear as possible that these are variable things, we're all real people here, that it's repeat and extreme behavior only) parameters state. Things like incessant, flippant muse creation and collection when there is, right there stated repeatedly, not the time or creative energy to keep up with those already present. Or just as obvious blog/muse/fandom hopping. Again, a thousand times, if that's how you enjoy RP and engage with it as your hobby, that's perfectly fine. It's also perfectly fine that other people don't enjoy that and would like a space to find the comparatively tiny number of muns who want to engage with the hobby in the way they do. That's what I'm trying to do!
I don't have an estimate on when this might go live, as has been clear with my horrifyingly delayed responses, I'm very busy right now. Just know that it will be happening! I believe things will be slowing down, allowing me more time to do more than a couple of responses a week, roughly toward the end of October/beginning of November. So, I'm thinking it might be the first week of November.
That's a little bit off, but it does give everyone time to send in asks about it! If there's something you can think of that would be helpful (questions for the submission, the way it's set up, rules, whatever you can think of), please, do send it in. I want to know! I'm just one very busy, very tired mun trying to still be a dedicated RPer myself elsewhere lol I appreciate that sort of feedback! And the list is for y'all, you really should get to opine and suggest things!
Also, I did just think of something, opinions, anyone? Since it is a list that is open to everyone who fits the description, there will be blogs containing "dark content." While tags would catch the major, basic things muns might wish to filter, that can't possibly be expected for unique squicks and triggers. I don't want anyone getting specific on the listing, I think that could incite problems, but how about warning that the blog does contain such content, with the notation right there in the rules, use info, and posted listings themselves that it's advised to visit rules links first for details. I'd like to avoid anyone getting exuberant, clicking a blog URL, and seeing some graphic imagery they need to avoid. This way, if you do that, you have been warned...repeatedly and responsibly, and made your choices.
Obviously, that is dependent upon muns actually detailing what upsetting content might be present on the blog in their rules and not simply making a blanket statement that it exists. I haven't seen many RPers of this type doing that in recent years, but I'm sure that the increasing threat of harassment has negatively impacted this honesty and warning system. Still, at least this way, you'd be warned and could exercise your own judgment messaging the mun of the blog to ask for content specifics before you proceeded beyond rules.
Those are my thoughts, anyway!

Partner search!
Name:Rhys Age:20 Timezone:Central Email:[email protected] Hey there! I'm looking for long term, descriptive roleplay partners. I do m/m, m/f, f/f. I am also very wary of being approached with "I only do this gender" because I am very flexible, and just want many different characters on both of our ends. I do not appreciate stereotypical 'top/bottom' and 'seme/uke' tropes (please don't call it yaoi/yuri and/or give anime-esque face claims) and would like for relationships to remain as realistic as possible, meaning switching. I do smut. (Note: I rdon't roleplay with minors. Please be 18+. If you aren't a legal adult, I will not respond.) Fandoms ----- •Life is Strange (Max/Chloe, Max/literally anyone, Chloe/Rachel, Warren/Nathan) •Game of Thrones (Gendry/Arya, Jon/Ygritte, Robb/Theon, Robb/Talisa, Sansa/Margaery [video game>>] Mira/Sera, Asher/Gwyn, Rodrik/Arthur, Elaena/Gryff) •The Wolf Among Us (Bigby/Snow, Bigby/Woodsman, Bigby/Bloody Mary) •Steven Universe (Ruby/Sapphire, [aged up] Connie/Steven, Pearl/Rose/Greg, Pearl/Amethyst) •The Mortal Instruments (Alec/Magnus, Simon/Raphael, Isabelle/Simon, Isabelle/Lydia, Jace/Clary, Clary/Isabelle, Jace/Simon) •The Walking Dead (Rick/Daryl, Rick/Negan, Negan/Dwight, Daryl/Carol, Rick/Shane, Rick/Michonne, Michonne/Andrea, Glenn/Maggie [video game>>] Luke/Nick, Lee/Carley, Lee/Kenny, Eddie/Wyatt, Nate/Russel) •The Last of Us (Joel/OC, Joel/Tess, Ellie/Riley) •Infamous; Second Son (Eugene/Delsin, Reggie/Delsin, Fetch/Delsin) •Marvel (Tony/Steve, Tony/Bruce, Bucky/Steve, Clint/Pietro, Clint/Phil, Natasha/Wanda, Peter/Wade, Peter/Harry, Peter/Gwen, Peter/Harry/Gwen, Wade/Vanessa, Wade/Peter/Vanessa) •Until Dawn (Chris/Josh, Chris/Mike, Ashley/Sam, Sam/Beth, Emily/Jess/Matt, Ashley/Chris) •Borderlands (Jack/Rhys, Jack/Rhys/Timothy, Fiona/Athena, Athena/Janey, Fiona/Yvette, Rhys/Vaughn, Jack/Nisha, Axton/Rhys, Axton/Maya, Maya/Lilith, Lilith/Roland, Timothy/Wilhem, Jack/Nisha/Rhys) •Underland Chronicles (Gregor/Luxa, [aged up] Gregor/Howard) •Uncharted (Nathan/Sam, Nathan/Harry, Nathan/Elaena, Elaena/Chloe, Sully/Chloe) •Miraculous Ladybug (Adrien/Marinette, Nino/Alya, Marinette/Lila, Marinette/Nathaniel) •Suicide Squad/Batman (Bruce/Dick, Harley/Ivy, platonic Harley & Floyd, limited Harley/Joker [i advise being very careful, as this pairing is extremely toxic and abusive], Floyd/El Diablo) •Brokeback Mountain (Ennis Del Mar/Jack Twist) •Shutter Island (Teddy Daniels;Andrew Laeddis/Chuck Aule) •Hamilton: An American Musical (Alexander Hamilton/John Laurens, Alexander Hamiton/Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton/Elizabeth Schuyler, Alexander Hamilton/Angelica Schuyler, Elizabeth Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, Aaron Burr/Theodosia Prevost, Philip Hamilton/Theodosia Burr, Lafayette/John Laurens, Alexander Hamilton/George Washington, Lafayette/Hercules Mulligan) Eyewitness (US): (Philip/Lucas) --- I don't do canon/oc, but can be convinced for some, I am all for it! If you don't see a certain pairing you're looking for, approach me with it! I may have forgotten or whatnot and could easily be swayed for that pairing! ---- I would love to chat OOC. Being friends is what really makes this work! I want to hear about what's going on in your life. I want to be someone that you can lean on! If I do not reply to an email within the span of a few days, it may be because it got lost in my inbox. Just send it again if this occurs! I write in third person, past/present tense, and in paragraph form. I'm going to be honest, if you show disinterest with one liners and very limited two-paragraphed responses to my six, then I will most likely not respond. I want to be friends, and get along, but if someone doesn't want to put in the effort, I understand. I know life is busy, and you don't always have time, but if it's a constant one-two paragraphs and not at least giving me a heads up that you'll be gone, I'm not going to accept it when I specified that I just want something over three. :( I feel bad for doing this, but it just gets tiring to try awfully hard and get a disinterested response in return. Original plot ideas ------ •Anthropomorphic medieval nobles that have to tame the beasts within themselves in the midst of a war. ((This is an extremely descriptive, multiple character plot that I have pre-planned.)) •Super duo/team coming together to defeat a mass villain/conflict •Pandemic survivor must take an immune survivor across the US in order to extract the cure (credit to The Last of Us) •Future where androids/robots are used as helpers for just about anything, for example: Keeping disabled and elderly people company in their homes, doing odd jobs to assist humanity, etc. among this, most people who don't need them as companions are very prejudice against the AI. It is up to our characters to stop the impending war between AI and human. (Credit to I, Robot. Two of our main characters can be a human and an AI! :V) •Assassin roleplay (can be assassin/target, assassin/assassin. historical or modern) •Explorers looking for a treasure on the coast of a tropical island(credit to the Uncharted series! Can be romantic or platonic) •Time traveller gets stuck in time, and another person has to help them get back to the reality they came from. • Oceanologists go to a secluded island to study the plants and sea life in the water, and on a scuba dive, discover creatures unlike anything they've ever seen. People with tails and scales! (Merpeople! :D Can be romantic, like all the others) •Person goes to live in a very wealthy relatives home after they pass away, and learns how secluded the neighborhood really is, with a small village of less than 30 people, and nothing more. Supernatural occurrences ensue, and characters must stop the thing/creature as it starts taking people in the night. •Detective duo goes to a secluded mental penitentiary together in order to solve the case of a patient that went missing out of nowhere. Throughout their journey, detective 1 is separated from their partner, and is put through a series of trials in order to find their missing patient. What they think is going on isn't what it appears to be. (credit to the movie Shutter Island. Heavily influenced on the plot, and will contain many, many triggers. Such as murder, mental illness, and deception.) ------------ Limits: I cannot do pedophilia, mpreg, beastiality and/or furries, gun/knife kink, bathroom stuff, a/b/o, or gruesomely detailed rape/forced sexual interactions. Other than that, anything is fair game. Please don't contact me with a "hey, wanna rp?" I appreciate you adding things about yourself, and things pertaining to the RP like your limits and what interests you most! :) thank you! I apologize if I seem straight forward or offend anyone over some specifics I want, but I promise I am much, much more friendly and relaxed when we talk OOC.
