Maybe a decade ago, my friends and I did a parody for a Rock Band contest at PlayOnCon, which we called Phat L00t by Sum4d6.
Now, with the help of Pandemic Date Night, we’ve actually recorded the song for real and made a music video!

Beyond the Word Count: A Book Editor's Guide to Writing a First Draft
Tumblr media
Every year, we’re lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events. First Draft Pro, a 2023 NaNoWriMo sponsor, is a beautifully designed writing app for fiction writers. Today, they've partnered with Kelly Norwood-Young, former book editor for Pan Macmillan and Penguin Random House, to bring you some pro tips on writing your first draft:
In my career as a book editor, I’ve reviewed hundreds of manuscripts. I've seen the joy of authors creating compelling tales, but also how disheartening it can be to rewrite a disjointed story. I’m here to give you some strategies to address common pitfalls so that you not only reach your NaNoWriMo goal, but also lay the groundwork for a manuscript that truly deserves to be called a gripping novel.
1. Have a plan.
Even if you’re more of a ‘pantser’ than a ‘planner’, it's really helpful to have an outline. I have two favourite approaches for this: the structure-first approach, and what I call the ‘Phoebe Waller-Bridge approach’.
The structure-first approach
There are a lot of narrative frameworks for story structure, but the most foundational in Western fiction is the three-act structure. Here’s a handy guide that breaks each of the classical three acts into a day-by-day guide to NaNoWriMo:
8-day guide to Act 1
14-day guide to Act 2
8-day guide to Act 3
The Phoebe Waller-Bridge approach
I love this quote from Phoebe Waller-Bridge: ‘I’ve never thought structure first. I’ve always thought material first, jokes first, character first ... But knowing the end really helps. Then you just go as far away from the end emotionally as you possibly can.’
Sketch out your major story arcs, your character’s desires and conflicts, and the world they inhabit. The more you know your story's world and inhabitants, the less you'll stray into scenes that lack purpose or create plot and character inconsistencies.
2. Keep the story moving.
Each word needs to propel your story forward. Superfluous details or tangents that don’t serve the narrative stall the momentum you’re trying to generate for your reader.
There’s a trick you can use to move your story forward, called the question of reversibility. Ask yourself: How difficult would it be for my character to reverse their decision? The harder it would be for them to turn back, the more you’ve moved the plot forward.
3. Plant clues carefully.
Plant important elements early and make sure every element, however subtle, serves a purpose (i.e. Chekhov’s Gun).
Be sure to set up necessary components for your climax so that you can steer clear of Deus ex Machina (having that strong outline will help you here), and avoid red herrings unless they serve a clear, meaningful purpose (e.g. you’re writing a mystery and your readers expect some false leads). Misleading your readers without a payoff can erode their trust.
4. Write for the reader, not yourself.
‘There is only one thing you write for yourself, and that is a shopping list,’ insists Umberto Eco in On Literature. Even if writing, for you, is a therapeutic outlet, a form of self-expression, or a way to leave a legacy, you’re still writing to say something to someone else. Your story simply won’t be as strong if you forget your reader’s perspective.
5. Keep daily editorial notes for your future self.
While editing should wait until at least December, end each day with a brief reflection, noting any off-course deviations, potential inconsistencies, areas to research further, or moments of inspiration to revisit when you start editing.
These daily notes will be invaluable during the editing process, helping you to remember insights that are no longer fresh when you come back to the manuscript later.
6. Embrace the first-draft mentality.
There’s a lot you can do to ensure that your first draft is the best it can be before the end of November—but just as important is to understand that all first drafts have flaws.
As a book editor, I've witnessed manuscripts transform, sometimes unrecognizably, from their first drafts. Embrace the uncertainty and creative detours—because it's from this beautiful chaos that your story will find its true voice.
Kelly Norwood-Young is a seasoned book editor and proofreader with comprehensive experience across various facets of manuscript editing. Her background includes roles at Pan Macmillan and Penguin Books, extending into a successful freelance career working with award-winning authors. Kelly's work, known for its precision and sensitivity to the author's voice, has been integral to the success of both new and established writers globally.

My brother's ex-fiancee didn't think that penguins were birds. I couldn't believe it when she said that.
aha! here we get to another pitfall of human psychology!
when we put things into mental groups, like the group of "bird", we tend to have an archetype for that group in our brain. For birds, that's usually a songbird - something like a robin or a sparrow, maybe a pigeon. Small, flighted, perches on things. Things that fall outside of that archetype, if you're not familiar with them, don't compute - and we refuse to allow them into the grouping.
This is why the grouping thing is such a problem - our archetypes can never actually capture the diversity of a group we perceive, even if that group is a real thing. This is why stereotypes exist. This is why people still think of dinosaurs as lizards, because their archetype for dinosaur resembles a lizard more than a bird (even if it shouldn't). And this is why some people will refuse to believe that penguins or ostriches are birds.
we have to stop thinking that our brains are good at describing nature, because clearly, they are not.

I remember reading one of your asks on how you would like to do Batman and Wonder Woman's rouges right if you DID re-imagine them, so here are some recommendations.
For the Batman stuff, your best shots are looking at B:TAS/TNBA (A lot of the rouges were done wonderful there), The Arkham Games (Riddler, Bane, Catwoman, Scarecrow, and Penguin, but Joker is there too), and The Batman 2022 (Once again Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin, and if we want to get into it Gotham's corruption). The Non-B:TAS pieces of media are dark, but they're not edgy dark thankfully so you can pull some pieces from there for Inso.
Now for getting Wonder Woman's rouges right, the best recommendations I have is just reading up on greek mythology and picking up some of the old school, pre-52 Wonder Woman comics to see what elements of from those characters you can pick apart and remix into something faithful yet modern. I mean its what the B:TAS crew did, and one of the reasons why the show is still iconic.
You don't have to follow this advice, but just be aware that you have years of media to help you.
Oh thank you for the recommendations! :D
I've watched all of those Bat media already! I'm a big DCAU fan (finally finished re-watching Justice League Unlimited wahoo), I followed the Arkham games closely in college (where I really became a Bat-fan), and I re-watched The Batman 2022 recently! It's a delight. I tee-hee-d the whole time, what a treat. These adaptations just do such a good job that I don't know what else to add! Like what's there for me to change up? At most Scarecrow is definitely underdone in BTAS and the Arkham Games, so there's creatively wiggle room to reimagine him. But the others? Dunno yet until I look into them more.
Yeah that's honestly exactly my struggle with Wonder Woman, haha. You basically need a lot of homework before tackling adapting her (at least the way I do it)- not only does she have a ton of comics and re-imaginings, but Greek mythology on top of that? Woof I have not attended Wonder Woman university yet where I'd have to major in mythology and history, and minor in "what did this male writer do wrong this time" haha.
I'm so intimately familiar with Martian Manhunter's stories at this point (even without having read all of them, pre-Crisis and many Justice League comics are holes in my knowledge, still-) that I can spot character arc pitfalls and the weaknesses of an adaptation immediately. I know all the plots writers re-cycle with him at this point- so I know where to innovate and where I can pull a through line from. I don't know Diana well enough to do that yet.

I need to walk for health because I'm not loving how I feel, but I over-exercised as part of my ED so exercise triggers my ED thoughts (including suicidal ideation) and the risk of relapsing is Real. Searching for a solution that won't push me into relapsing OR turbo-charge my dysphoria OR enrage me has been upsetting in a way I don't know if anyone who has not had an ED can understand. If you know, you know.
So I finally thought about the zoo, and it was such a great idea. It's perfect. So I went and got a zoo membership two days ago so I can just go whenever and I probably should not have spent the money but boyfriend made really good tips this week and offered to cover it, and it occurred to me this one thing does ALL of the following for one (1) entire year:
I can access a very walkable space.
Place to go when I am restless but can't afford to go back home for a while.
Not a gym.
My hearing-impaired ass will be safe from car traffic.
No dogs.
No people on bikes that I can't hear.
Not jostling for space with joggers/bikers/etc. on those overly narrow public park trails and sidewalks, which makes me hate my body even more.
It's very very safe. No harassment, no crime.
Very few other people visibly exercising.
Less people Looking At Me (they are mostly busy Looking At animals).
Lots of bugs.
Many plants.
Things to touch.
People-watching.
Place to draw many things! <- Main appeal.
Non-zookeeper staff there is mostly queer! And when they learn you are queer they tell you which animals are gay.
It's the penguins. They have gay penguins.
Sneps.
Stared at by tigers -- all the intensity of being about to die with none of the fear!
Smells smells smells! Stinky smells, good smells, food smells, flower smells, lots of animal smells.
Lots of personal space. Hand sanitizer everywhere.
No music outdoors.
Train?! Train!
Petting zoo.
Will acclimate me to weather and sun over time.
Free! Ish.
I can go and just take short trips if I want.
Picnic area.
Access to attached huge nature park and educational/rec center.
Can bring a friend.
Cheap admission to many other zoos and aquariums.
I have raging ADHD and don't have the dopamine to spare on exercise for exercise's sake. Some of you will know what I mean, will understand that this is. Just. A terrible hurdle.
Downsides:
Sunscreen. Blech! (Lotion is heavy and hurts to apply and remove but spray works.)
Long drive, I live across town. (Can't change that but I can get up earlier.)
Lots of glass and I hate reflective surfaces. (A Challenge, but I can hopefully cope.)
It is hot outside a lot (but that's true of anywhere not indoors, and there's tons of shade and benches and indoor areas).
That's it. Those are the downsides.
Our zoo is good. It used to be really bad when I was little but over the last 20 years it has been revamping everything, the new enclosures are gorgeous and enriching. It isn't depressing to be there. It's nice.
We went today and had a great time. It felt way better not trying to see everything in one go, and I'm not tired or sore. I just feel good.
I just...wanted to talk about this. How hopeful I am today, to have not just solved a problem but maybe snatched a little happiness for myself for a while. To potentially make any further headway on an ED at this point, 15 years or so out, is pretty remarkable. There's pitfalls to watch for but this is so much better than anything else I've considered.
Maybe I will get bored of the zoo. I don't know! But I think that will take a while.
Look at this bad picture of three snep siblings lolling like housecats:

Not gonna get bored of those mighty beans.

You can't download a PDF for whatever amount of money you want to pay, including none, on the Team Snow Day website. It is not much like DND, but it is a lot like Joe
listen i also think I'd love ttrpgs. however I live in the middle of fucking nowhere and I do not have the things needed to do anything online
also I can see what you mean by it's a lot like Joe. yeah this is very Joe.

Embarking on watching all the Batman movies pt 9: The Batman (2022):
This move is a bit complicated, in terms of accuracy. As a Batman movie, I really enjoyed it. There’s a very clear separation between Bruce and Batman, to the point where even Alfred comments “is Bruce Wayne actually going to be making an appearance?” It’s a perfect Batman Year Two, complete with the baggy t-shirt, smeared eyeliner, and awkward not-quite-quippy one liners (“you got a lot of cats” said to Catwoman). We see him purposefully interact with kids a lot, especially towards the end, and we have a lot of the classic internal dialogue which is treated exactly as cringy as it is (“the city’s scarred. Angry. Like me.”).
I also think they added just enough hints of not-quite-entirely-created or fleshed out aspects of Batman. Having the Iceberg Lounge was a nice touch, as was having the memory of Thomas Wayne healing Falcone. There were a couple major changes, and most of them worked fairly well. Having Martha be an Arkham was a weird choice, but paired with making Selina be Falcone’s daughter, it added nicely to helping Gotham feel insular.
Catwoman is fantastic, and I greatly enjoyed having her be so involved with the Falcones. I also quite liked Bella Reál’s storyline. Having a background plot of politics is really nice and it helped flesh out Gotham as a city.
There were a few changes that didn’t fit quite so well. Making Penguin be a normal mobster and part of the Falcones made me wonder how he would advance as the Penguin, and it made him a little less weird and out there.
Similar to that, I do have a fair amount of issues with their treatment of Riddler. Firstly, while making him be a type of villain that is feared in modern times (a white fuckboi Reddit mod), it once again brings up the question “why Gotham?”. It doesn’t make Gotham feel particularly singular, or especially messed up. Furthermore, by turning the character himself into a less (for lack of a better word) bright character, by making him not have the Riddler suit and have his outfit be covering and dark, it really makes him feel like he’s not the Riddler. While I could see the changes being made, with the amount of care that gets put into the Batman character and the Falcone family, it feels very out of place. While it seems like a nitpick, making his name be Edward Nashton instead of Ed Nygma is a great example of this. Ed Nygma is designed to be glaringly obvious, kinda cringy, and very campy. Plus, it fits with a lot of the Rogues (like Julian Day being Calender Man). Additionally, giving him reasonable motive (being screwed over by the crime families) sort of ruins the point of him. You have reasonable villains that exist for moral quandaries (Poison Ivy, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, Babydoll, etc), but Riddler exists fairly in the black and white. He’s not as cut-and-dry evil as the Joker, but he mainly exists to cause chaos, not to raise good points.
Overall, it’s a very good BYT and a suitably fleshed out Falcone, and in terms of the internal machinations of Gotham it’s fairly comic accurate. Plus, a lot of the shots looked very much like comic panels, which is something I greatly enjoy. I deeply hate the Joker hints at the end, largely because I worry that it will fall into the same pitfalls that The Dark Knight did and will either not adjust him to fit the world very well or over-adjust.

The Power and Perils of PBN Backlinks: Unveiling the Secrets Behind Private Blog Networks
In the ever-evolving landscape of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), backlinks remain a crucial factor in determining a website's ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs). Among the myriad strategies employed to acquire backlinks, Private Blog Networks (PBNs) have gained notoriety for their potential to manipulate search engine algorithms and artificially boost website rankings. In this article, we delve into the world of PBN backlinks, exploring their effectiveness, risks, and ethical considerations.
Tumblr media
Understanding PBN Backlinks
A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a network of websites owned by a single entity or organization. These websites, often referred to as "satellite sites," are created with the sole purpose of building links to a target website, also known as the "money site." pbnbacklink typically consist of expired or auctioned domain names with existing authority and backlink profiles.
PBN backlinks are links placed within the content of these satellite sites, directing traffic and link juice (SEO value) to the money site. The rationale behind PBNs is to artificially inflate the authority and relevance of the money site in the eyes of search engines, thereby improving its ranking for targeted keywords.
The Appeal of PBN Backlinks
PBNs offer several perceived advantages for website owners and SEO practitioners:
Control Over Anchor Text and Link Placement: Unlike natural backlink acquisition methods, pbnbacklink  allow complete control over anchor text and the placement of links, enabling targeted optimization for specific keywords.
Rapid Ranking Improvements: PBN backlinks can lead to quick and significant improvements in search engine rankings, making them an attractive option for businesses seeking immediate visibility and traffic.
Cost-Effectiveness: While building high-quality backlinks through outreach and content marketing can be time-consuming and expensive, PBNs offer a relatively inexpensive alternative for acquiring links at scale.
Flexibility and Scalability: PBNs provide flexibility in terms of link acquisition strategies and scalability in expanding the network to include more satellite sites over time.
Risks and Pitfalls
Despite their apparent benefits, PBN backlinks come with significant risks and potential consequences:
Detection by Search Engines: Search engines, particularly Google, have become increasingly adept at detecting and penalizing websites that engage in manipulative link-building practices, including PBNs. Algorithm updates such as Google's Penguin algorithm target link schemes and can result in severe penalties, including loss of rankings or deindexation.
Negative SEO Impact: Low-quality PBNs may contain spammy content, unrelated niches, or irrelevant backlinks, which can harm the credibility and authority of the money site. Associating with dubious link networks can tarnish the website's reputation and credibility in the eyes of both search engines and users.
Unpredictable Long-Term Results: While PBNs may yield short-term ranking improvements, their effectiveness over the long term is uncertain. Search engine algorithms are continually evolving, and tactics that may work today could become ineffective or detrimental in the future.
Ethical Considerations: PBNs are often viewed as a manipulative and deceptive SEO tactic that violates search engine guidelines. Engaging in such practices undermines the principles of fair competition and organic search results, potentially damaging the reputation of both the website owner and the SEO industry as a whole.
Ethical and Sustainable Alternatives
In light of the risks associated with PBN backlinks, website owners and SEO practitioners are encouraged to adopt ethical and sustainable link-building strategies:
Content Marketing and Outreach: Create high-quality, valuable content that naturally attracts backlinks from authoritative websites within your niche. Outreach to relevant influencers, bloggers, and publications to promote your content and earn genuine backlinks through partnerships and collaborations.
Guest Blogging: Contribute guest posts to reputable websites and blogs in your industry, providing valuable insights and expertise to their audience while earning backlinks to your site in return.
Social Media and Community Engagement: Build relationships with your target audience through social media engagement, online forums, and community platforms. By establishing trust and credibility within your community, you can naturally attract backlinks and referrals to your website.
Link Earning, Not Link Building: Shift the focus from acquiring backlinks through artificial means to earning them organically through the creation of valuable, relevant, and shareable content that resonates with your target audience.
Conclusion
While PBN backlinks may offer a shortcut to improved search engine rankings, their use comes with considerable risks and ethical implications. Search engines are increasingly adept at identifying and penalizing manipulative link-building tactics, making sustainable and ethical link-building strategies essential for long-term success.
By focusing on creating high-quality content, fostering genuine relationships with your audience, and earning backlinks through ethical means, website owners and SEO practitioners can build a strong and resilient online presence that withstands algorithmic changes and delivers sustainable results over time. Remember, in the world of SEO, honesty, transparency, and integrity are the cornerstones of long-term success.

Be the first Penguin
EXPERIENCE IS what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted. It’s a phrase worth considering at every brick wall we encounter, and at every disappointment. It’s also a reminder that failure is not just acceptable, it’s often essential.
But those who’ve had failures are valued, too—sometimes even more so.
Start-up companies often prefer to hire a chief executive with a failed start-up in his or her background. The person who failed often knows how to avoid future failures.
The person who knows only success can be more oblivious to all the pitfalls.
Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted. And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer.

What Role Can An SEO Agency Play In Your Business's Search Engine Success?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a crucial part of any online business. If you want your website to get noticed by potential customers, you need it to be easily accessible in search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.
This is an important and often difficult task that requires expertise and experience. Luckily, there are SEO Agency in Ahmedabad out there that can handle this work for you!
As an entrepreneur who's just starting out or looking to expand their company's reach, knowing how these agencies work can help you decide if they're right for your business. Here's what they do:
They can focus on the big picture.
In order to do this, an SEO agency can help you understand the big picture.
They can help you set goals for your website and for your business as a whole.
They can help you understand where your business is now, and where it needs to be in the future.
They can provide recommendations on how to get there.
They've got industry experience.
Your SEO agency partner should have experience in your particular industry. That means they know the kinds of trends to expect and what to watch for. They know the best practices for search engine optimization and how to implement them effectively, so you can rest assured that your business is getting the most out of its online presence.
A good SEO agency will also have experience with the kinds of challenges your industry faces. They know how to address those challenges, so that your business can get ahead in a competitive marketplace.
Their knowledge is broad and deep.
You’re in good hands. A reputable SEO agency will be able to walk you through the process of improving your website, and they'll be able to offer guidance on the best ways to achieve this. You can trust them to make sure that when you do see improvements in your rankings and traffic, there won't be any surprises or unexpected pitfalls along the way.
You can trust your SEO agency to be transparent with you and not to take advantage of your lack of knowledge.
They should explain all the steps they're taking in plain English, so that you'll have a clear understanding of what they're doing and why it's important. This can help ensure that there are no misunderstandings or confusion about what's going on with your website.
They know how to work with the algorithm.
A good SEO agency will know how to work with the algorithm, and they can probably tell you if something will or won't work. If you try it on your own, you're likely to get caught by Google's Penguin filter (or worse).
A good SEO Agency in Ahmedabad also has access to tools that let them see what's working for their clients and what isn't.
If a search engine optimization project is not working out, then the agency should be able to point out where the problem lies and offer solutions for improvement.
This way, there aren't any surprises when it comes time for Google Analytics or another analytics tool that shows how much traffic your website receives from organic sources (i.e., search engines).
Conclusion
SEO agencies can be a great asset to your business, and they can help you reach your goals. So when you're looking for an SEO agency, make sure that they have the experience and knowledge needed to get the job done right.
