Sidesteppers have appeared throughout the Mario franchise, but this would be the first time they've appeared in the Mario Kart series. They've since gone on to appear in every subsequent Mario Kart title, through either returning or new tracks.

Spooky Video Game Music No. 300: GBA Boo Lake- Mario Kart 8 (Wii U/Switch)

Wow. We made a milestone with the Spooky Video Game Music list. After 9 years, we made it to 300 songs. To celebrate this milestone, I decide to bring in what I thought is one of the scariest Mario Kart songs yet. After 5 years, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe finally brought more stages thanks to the Booster Course Pass. Lots of stages from the older Mario Karts are given an HD coat of paint. In Wave 3, the returning Boo Lake from Mario Kart: Super Circuit makes its grand return. While it does look quite similar to the original like the haunted house in the background and there are the Boos themselves, it does have some differences. For one thing, it’s an actually a lake instead of a large hole and because of that, there is some moments you have to drive below the water. There are Fish Bones swimming in the water serving as obstacles. The layout of the stage remains the same but with the new stuff, it feels almost like a new course. Given we’re in a haunted lake, of course, the music will be scary as well and boy, it’s definitely scary…

We did talk about the original song back in 2020 (No. 215) but man, this song really got more scarier. The slow synth and the bass in the beginning adds some tension to the stage, giving a sense of dread of being in a haunted lake near a haunted house. Once the drums kick in, it gets really catchy while still sounding scary as well. What sounds like ghosts groaning added with the violins adds to the spookiness and intensity of the stage. The song then gets back with the low synth near the end, giving a sense of panic as the song reaches its apex. Man, with the updated instruments thanks to the Mario Kart Band, this ended up being one of the spookiest Mario songs yet and definitely perfect for Halloween. 🎃 Here’s to 300 songs of the Spooky Video Game Music list with more songs to go. 🎃

GBA Snow Land - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

In most Mario Kart games, if the player is in first place while using the Spiny Shell (known colloquially as the Blue Shell), it will either disappear or immediately hit the user. However, in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, it has a unique interaction.

If the player throws the Spiny Shell backward, it will wait in that spot on the track until the next lap, and then hit the driver in first place when that driver passes that spot. As such, if the player who placed the shell is in first place on the next lap, this turns into merely an extended "hit yourself" setup.
