Beyond the Word Count: A Book Editor's Guide to Writing a First Draft
Tumblr media
Every year, we’re lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events. First Draft Pro, a 2023 NaNoWriMo sponsor, is a beautifully designed writing app for fiction writers. Today, they've partnered with Kelly Norwood-Young, former book editor for Pan Macmillan and Penguin Random House, to bring you some pro tips on writing your first draft:
In my career as a book editor, I’ve reviewed hundreds of manuscripts. I've seen the joy of authors creating compelling tales, but also how disheartening it can be to rewrite a disjointed story. I’m here to give you some strategies to address common pitfalls so that you not only reach your NaNoWriMo goal, but also lay the groundwork for a manuscript that truly deserves to be called a gripping novel.
1. Have a plan.
Even if you’re more of a ‘pantser’ than a ‘planner’, it's really helpful to have an outline. I have two favourite approaches for this: the structure-first approach, and what I call the ‘Phoebe Waller-Bridge approach’.
The structure-first approach
There are a lot of narrative frameworks for story structure, but the most foundational in Western fiction is the three-act structure. Here’s a handy guide that breaks each of the classical three acts into a day-by-day guide to NaNoWriMo:
8-day guide to Act 1
14-day guide to Act 2
8-day guide to Act 3
The Phoebe Waller-Bridge approach
I love this quote from Phoebe Waller-Bridge: ‘I’ve never thought structure first. I’ve always thought material first, jokes first, character first ... But knowing the end really helps. Then you just go as far away from the end emotionally as you possibly can.’
Sketch out your major story arcs, your character’s desires and conflicts, and the world they inhabit. The more you know your story's world and inhabitants, the less you'll stray into scenes that lack purpose or create plot and character inconsistencies.
2. Keep the story moving.
Each word needs to propel your story forward. Superfluous details or tangents that don’t serve the narrative stall the momentum you’re trying to generate for your reader.
There’s a trick you can use to move your story forward, called the question of reversibility. Ask yourself: How difficult would it be for my character to reverse their decision? The harder it would be for them to turn back, the more you’ve moved the plot forward.
3. Plant clues carefully.
Plant important elements early and make sure every element, however subtle, serves a purpose (i.e. Chekhov’s Gun).
Be sure to set up necessary components for your climax so that you can steer clear of Deus ex Machina (having that strong outline will help you here), and avoid red herrings unless they serve a clear, meaningful purpose (e.g. you’re writing a mystery and your readers expect some false leads). Misleading your readers without a payoff can erode their trust.
4. Write for the reader, not yourself.
‘There is only one thing you write for yourself, and that is a shopping list,’ insists Umberto Eco in On Literature. Even if writing, for you, is a therapeutic outlet, a form of self-expression, or a way to leave a legacy, you’re still writing to say something to someone else. Your story simply won’t be as strong if you forget your reader’s perspective.
5. Keep daily editorial notes for your future self.
While editing should wait until at least December, end each day with a brief reflection, noting any off-course deviations, potential inconsistencies, areas to research further, or moments of inspiration to revisit when you start editing.
These daily notes will be invaluable during the editing process, helping you to remember insights that are no longer fresh when you come back to the manuscript later.
6. Embrace the first-draft mentality.
There’s a lot you can do to ensure that your first draft is the best it can be before the end of November—but just as important is to understand that all first drafts have flaws.
As a book editor, I've witnessed manuscripts transform, sometimes unrecognizably, from their first drafts. Embrace the uncertainty and creative detours—because it's from this beautiful chaos that your story will find its true voice.
Kelly Norwood-Young is a seasoned book editor and proofreader with comprehensive experience across various facets of manuscript editing. Her background includes roles at Pan Macmillan and Penguin Books, extending into a successful freelance career working with award-winning authors. Kelly's work, known for its precision and sensitivity to the author's voice, has been integral to the success of both new and established writers globally.

Norwood family updates
Tumblr media
Starting with the kids still at the main Norwood house
Mary is now engaged to Hudson and is so excited to be married. Mary is very fundie so to her, this is all she's been waiting for.
Tumblr media
Billy is also now a young adult and is going to an actual college to become a doctor. He is also now courting Shirly Boykin; her family's modesty standards are different than the Norwoods, and Esther doesn't like her and doesn't like Billy going to an unwatcherly college. But it was ultimately Greg's decision, and he thinks it's fine. Good for Billy.
Tumblr media
Ashton is also super close to adulthood and is planning on going to a WLB-approved college for preaching, as he is planning on taking over for Greg in the future. Landen isn't quite sure what he wants to do; he loves the watcher and music, but he's not sure about all of his parents views. Alan isn't really worried about much; he is his parents baby and can do no wrong, so his life is pretty easy, and he thinks his family's views are the best. So yeah
Tumblr media
Greg and Esther are the same boring, annoying people they've always been. They are dedicated to their church and keeping the kids they control in line.
Tammy's Family
Tumblr media
Tammy and Dale already have five children, from left to right. Kellie (2), Destiny (3), Hayden (4), Travis (5), Ross (1), and are just as strict as Esther and Greg. Tammy and Dale fight a lot and definitely don't want to be married, but what choice do they have? They are also still youth pastors at the Norwwod church and do a terrible job. The numbers represent birth order.
Chad's Family
Tumblr media
Alina finally convinced Chad to adopt, and now they have a son, Spencer. Chad is super busy at the computer repair shop, but Alina doesn't care; she's so happy to have a child finally and to have fewer people comment at church. Besides this, they are a boring, fundie family.
Adam's Family
Tumblr media
Adam and Lydia are still living their best lives in Brightchester and are so excited for where life is taking them.
Maria's Family
Tumblr media
Maria is so happy with her crunchy fundie life. Besides wearing pants and choosing their family size, they are fundie the rest of the way. Their oldest Staci is close to aging up, and they recently found out they are expecting.
Bethany's Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beth is still living with her great friends in Windenburg. Sadly, she found out college wasn't for her and dropped after a semester and a half. Luckily, after that, she picked up the skill of mixology and soon started applying to bars. She loves bartending and can't wait to make it her career.

Day 1 of Tumblr’s #ActsOfPride campaign:

These are the black trans lives we have lost due to violence in the United States since 2009. Sadly, this is most likely not a complete list as many of the souls we have lost go unreported or were misgendered. They will not be forgotten.

Cinderella x Kelly Rowland
The Blue Rose - a symbol of love
I think Kelly is one of the greatest role models we have for young women of color. She has grace, style, but she’s not afraid to be her authentic COUNTRY self!
Ever since I saw Brandy Norwood portray Cinderella in Roger and Hammerstein’s Adaptation I’ve always thought “Cinderella is a Black Woman! PERIOD!” When I think of a black woman with beauty and grace but also the youthfulness to be someone such as Cinderella I immediately thought of Kelly! A true rose in a bush of thorns!

Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood cast net worth and Salary per episode in 2018
Tumblr media
The Love and Hip Hop franchise has been going on for quite a while now producing spin-offs on most major cities of the country. It all started with New York, then later spilled over to Atlanta and finally the Hollywood edition. Other cities that have been proposed for the show include Chicago, New Orleans, Detroit, and Houston. medianet_width = "600"; medianet_height = "250"; medianet_crid = "442568836"; medianet_versionId = "3111299"; We will focus on the cast of Love and Hip Hop : Hollywood, highlighting their salaries per episode and overall net worth and assets. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});
Ray J Net Worth in the year 2018.
Born as William Ray Norwood Jr., younger brother to famous singer Brandy and cousin to Snoop Dogg, Ray J has definitely made headlines. Both for the wrong and right reasons. He’s a singer, songwriter, television personality, actor, and so much more.
Tumblr media
Ray J net worth While focusing on his acting career alone, he has done quite some shows For the Love of Ray Jay, Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business, and Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood. Starring as one of the main characters on the show, he let the world in his $25,500 salary per episode aired on the VH1 network. Ray J’s net worth currently amounts to $6 million.
Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood cast Moniece Slaughter Net Worth.
The show is mostly known for its dramatic twists and turns. However, the producers did not anticipate for the shade main cast member Moniece Slaughter threw at VH1. This beef had something to do with the low salary from each episode she did for the show.
Tumblr media
Moniece Slaughter's net worth The posts, currently taken down were uploaded on her Instagram when she threatened to leave after three seasons. Though unknown, it looks like the network decided to do something about it since she stayed till the 5th season. Besides being a TV personality, she’s also a performer, model, and songwriter. Moniece Slaughter has a net worth of $1.7 million from all her work and business.
Teairra Mari Net Worth is $1million.
Always spicing up the show is none other than a dancer, actress, singer, and songwriter Teairra Mari.
Tumblr media
Teairra Mari's net worth While her voice may be the work of an angel, her personality is fierce. While the show mostly feeds off the drama, she has been known to sometimes get physical in her confrontations when protecting her man. Away from the drama, she does have a reputable career to be emulated. Love Hip Hop Hollywood’s Teairra Mari Net Worth is $1 million. Teairra Mari’s salary per episode on the show may be unknown, but she has made millions from her songs and contract signings at Def Jam. Collaborating with famous artist like Jay Z, you most definitely bet her songs have risen up the Billboard charts.
Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood cast Nikki Mudarris Net Worth.
The women on the show aren’t just models and divas. Some of them are businesswomen and well established for that matter. Meet Miss Nikkii Baby, also known as Nikki Mudarris, a model, reality tv star, and entrepreneur.
Tumblr media
While she may be pretty on the outside, she knows a lot about money and how to keep them coming. The model runs her father’s numerous casinos and family businesses. However, that’s her father’s fortune. To focus on her, each salary per episode may be unknown, but her net worth isn’t. Nikki Mudarris makes roughly $320 thousand annually salaries and has an estimated net worth of $800 thousand.
Lil’ Fizz Net Worth.
Every rapper goes with a cool alias. Usually something so catchy that even their real name starts to fade. Well, we’re here to remind you. Lil’ Fizz, also known as Dreux Pierre Frederic is a record producer and actor. He had his breakthrough as a member of the early RnB group B2K. Nowadays, the rapper does his best to stay relevant in the industry by making use of his acting career. Lil’ Fizz net worth is approximately $2 million while his actual annual salary is undisclosed. The same can be said about his salary for each episode of Love & Hip Hop he stars in.
Tumblr media
Lil' Fizz net worth
Princess Love
Princess Pilipina Love Norwood is an African-American Filipino model, actress, and fashion designer. She shares the name Norwood with Ray J because she is, in fact, his girl. The two tied the knot on January 2015 after dating for a year. Together with her entrepreneur of a husband, the power couple manages fashion lines and clothing designs. She appeared on the show as one of the main characters and soon became the love interest of Ray J. Financially, she can speak for herself. Princess Love has a net worth of close to $2 million. Unlike her husband, her cheque per episode is private and confidential.
Hazel-E.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 25th, 1980 as Erica Adams, she grew up to become a formidable rapper. However, this wasn’t always the case for her. The rapper had dreams of becoming an actress and even studied for it. Instead, a life directed her to a career as a publicist. From celebrities to brands and promotions, she did it all. She soon joined the cast of Love & Hip Hop and earns just as much as they do. The rapper was the love interest of fellow rapper Yung Berg. It’s still unclear as to how much she gets per episode. On the other hand, Hazel-E’s net worth is estimated to be $1 million
Masika Kalysha
Born as Masika Tucker in Chicago, she knew she was destined for greatness at quite a young age. However, her parents being protective of their daughter decided against it. At age 16, she became a model and moved up the ladder to become a Video Vixen. Linked to famous rappers like Lil Wayne, she decided on changing her name and started her rapping career. Masika Kalysha became even more famous when her acting career kicked in. Being the mother of a daughter with her father allegedly being Fetty Wap, she had to make ends meet. Masika Kalysha’s net worth is $200 thousand from sources such as her business and acting. Like most of the cast members, Masika Kalysha salary per episode remains undisclosed.
Nia Riley
Starting off as the daughter of the famous celebrity and Grammy award winner Teddy Riley, Nia got to be her own person when she stared in Love & hip hop. She’s a model, reality TV star, and mother to the beautiful Baby Kamryn. The paternity of the girl has always been debated as to whether she’s Soulja Boy’s or not. Nia Riley and Soulja Boy have been in on and off relationship since they started back in 2014. When she’s not with him, she’s seen cuddled up with Lil’ Fizz on the show. It looks like the model takes home a huge salary after filming. Nia Riley has so far garnered a net worth of approximately $3 million.
Lyrica Anderson
Lyrica is the remaining Anderson twin after her sister, Adia died due to lung-related issues when she was younger. Growing up and finding her roots, she dedicated her whole album to her and called it Adia. Lyrica Anderson is a talented singer and songwriter with EP’s related to Missy Elliot, Demi Lovato, and many more artists. Album sales went crazy with her two albums King me and King me 2. As a result, she got cast on the show as a supporting cast member but soon got promoted to one of the main members. She springs up a decent salary per episode. We can tell judging from her lifestyle. Lyrica Anderson’s net worth is $800 thousand.
A1 Bentley
No, we aren’t highlighting a car. Capturing the heart of Lyrica Anderson is none other than Floyd Bentley, also known as A1 Bentley. The duo found each other sometime during the prime of their careers and enjoy life together as a married couple. When it comes to a life’s work and legacy, the rapper doesn’t kid around. Love Hip Hop Hollywood A1 has a net worth of $2.3 million from his business deals and music. The rapper currently boasts of bossing around employees at his record company called Right Now Sounds. Always overseeing the signing of new artists, the CEO decided to venture into reality TV with his wife. Both their salaries are not for public eyes.
Kimberly Michelle Pate
The latest addition to the show during the fifth season is none other than Soul and RnB singer Kimberly Michelle Pate. The talented singer got her breakthrough in 2009 with her hit single Fakin’ It. Since then, she’s had some major record label signings, collaborations, endorsements and to top it all off, A World Tour. Her time on reality television may be short, but she does act like a natural. Anything to make ends meet for her little boy, Chase Bowman. K Michelle’s net worth is yet to be confirmed. Sources say she’s worth millions. Others say Kimberly Michelle Pate’s Net worth is $800 thousand. K Michelle’s salary is unheard of.
Bridget Kelly
The show may be called Love & Hip Hop, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be all about rappers and hip-hop artists. Bridget Kelly likes it much softer and goes for Pop songs. As a pop singer, she has gone through the cliché heartbreaks concerning cheating spouses even on the show. Nevertheless, it may be just the story that’s needed for the show. After all, she does get paid for it. Born on April 8th, 1986, the 32-year-old’s fortunes are still unknown. As such, Bridget Kelly’s net worth is $500,000. She did sign with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, and together with her acting, Bridget Kelly’s annual salary should be more than enough.
Solo Lucci
Drawing seasonal inspiration from famous rappers like 2pac and Swisha House, Solo Lucci made it into celebrity stardom with his single, Rip Tupac. Forming collaborations and producing worldwide hits are some of the reasons he got chosen to be on the show. He found love with Fetty Wap’s former girlfriend Alexis Sky, also appearing on the show. Moreover, his old flame and baby mama also appears as a recurring cast member to antagonize the couple. Quite an interesting storyline. As part of his reward for acting right, Solo Lucci’s net worth currently grosses at $2 million. The millionaire’s salary is next to mythical. No one knows for sure.
Marcus Black
Born on September 2nd, 1986, the 31-year-old songwriter makes a list. He made several guest appearances before getting fully reinstated as a cast member. Musically, he is a genius. Having written smashing hits for artists like Justin Bieber and partnered up with known celebs like DJ. Mustard and more, he deserved to be on the team. However, details about Marcus Black’s salary on the show are a little bit hazy since he isn’t one to share much. Marcus Black net worth is $560,0000.

The Soloist (2009)
Biography, Drama, Music |
The Soloist is a drama film directed by Joe Wright, and starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. The film was released in theatres on 24 April 2009 and on DVD and Blu-ray August 5.
In 2005, Steve Lopez is a journalist working for the Los Angeles Times. He is divorced and now works for his ex-wife, Mary, an editor. A biking accident lands Lopez in a hospital.
One day, he hears a violin being played beautifully. Investigating, he encounters Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless man with schizophrenia, who is playing a violin when Lopez introduces himself. During the conversation that follows, Lopez learns that Ayers once attended Juilliard.
Curious as to how a former student of such a prestigious school ended up on the streets, Lopez contacts Juilliard but learns that no record of Ayers graduating from it exists. Though at first figuring a man with schizophrenia who’s talented with a cello isn’t worth his time, Lopez soon realizes that he has no better story to write about. Luckily, he soon learns that Ayers did attend Juilliard, but dropped out after two years.
Finding Ayers the next day, Lopez says he wants to write about him. Ayers doesn’t appear to be paying attention. Getting nowhere, Lopez finds and contacts Ayers’ sister, who gives the columnist the information he needs: Ayers was once a child prodigy with the cello, until he began displaying symptoms of schizophrenia at Juilliard.

Can A Divorce Shield The Assets Of Derek Chauvin From Civil Lawsuits? Not Necessarily.
Kellie Chauvin, the wife of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, has announced that she is filing for divorce after 10 years of marriage.  In her statement, she expresses sympathy for the family of George Floyd.  There is no evidence that this is a tactic to shield assets from the inevitable civil lawsuit against the estate of Chauvin.  However, it is a question that often comes up with clients that I dealt with on both civil and criminal cases.  When faced with potential of civil liability, some clients raise the possibility of shielding their assets by transferring them or seeking a divorce.  Such maneuvers often do not work for a variety of legal and practical reasons.
Once again, Kellie Chauvin has not shown or stated any such intention. A public statement declared:
“Her utmost sympathy lies with [Floyd’s] family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy. While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.”
There are also other reasons (beyond incompatibility or asset protection) that some clients consider divorce in high-profile cases. The most common is that a defendant wants to shield his family for hatred and abuse.  A divorce can seem like abandonment but it is often preferred by a defendant who does not want to see his or her spouse (or children) face public ridicule or abuse.  In this case, it is likely that the Chauvins will not be living with each other any time soon, or perhaps never again.  A divorce can reflect that reality in trying to shield not assets but family members. (The Chauvins do not have children).
Now to the legal question of whether estate assets can be shielded through transfers or divorce.  Courts have flagged transfers or divorces that appear opportunistic or strategic in anticipation of liability.  One such case comes from Minnesota where this issue could play out in the court. The 2014 case is Citizens State Bank Norwood Young America v. Gordon Brown and the Minnesota Supreme Court faced a divorce of a couple of 23 years. Notably, the husband under the divorce was assigned all of the debt while his wife was awarded most of the liquid assets. They continued to live together.
When the Bank was awarded a default judgment against the husband in June 2010, it found it difficult to collect and by October 2010 the divorce was final. The bank went after the assets of the wife and relied upon the Minnesota Uniform Fraudulent Transfers Act (MUFTA). MUFTA is designed to prevent the removal of asserts to avoid payments under liability judgments.
MUFTA is not a new concept. Minnesota’s territorial legislature enacted an early such law in 1851.  See Minn. Rev. Terr. Stat., ch. 64 (1851) (covering “[e]very conveyance ․ made with the intent to hinder, delay or defraud creditors ․ shall be void.”).
The law contains “badges of fraud” to courts to apply in deciding whether a transfer was fraudulent. Section 513.44(a)(1) provides that “[a] transfer made or obligation incurred by a debtor is fraudulent as to a creditor ․ if the debtor made the transfer with actual intent to hinder, delay, or defraud any creditor.” A “transfer” is defined as “every mode, direct or indirect, absolute or conditional, voluntary or involuntary, of disposing of or parting with an asset.” Minn.Stat. § 513.41(12).
The Court ruled that “[t]he presence of several badges of fraud, however, creates an inference of fraud that requires clear evidence of a legitimate purpose to rebut” and “[t]he Browns have failed to rebut this inference.”
Other states have also applied such laws to divorce proceedings.   See Enlow v. Enlow, 352 Ga. App. 865, 868 (2019); Canty v. Otto, 304 Conn. 546, 558 (II) (41 A3d 280) (2012); RES-GA Lake Shadow v. Kennedy, 227 S3d 522, 527 (Ala. Civ. App. 2017); Estes v. Titus, 481 Mich. 573, 592, 751 N.W.2d 493 (V) (751 NW2d 493) (2008) (Michigan); Fadel v. El-Tobgy, 245 Ore. App. 696, 705 (264 P3d 150) (2011); Kardynalski v. Fisher, 135 Ill. App. 3d 643, 651 (482 NE2d 117, 90 Ill. Dec. 410) (1985).
In California, the court in Mejia v. Reed, 31 Cal. 4th 657, 668-669, 3 Cal. Rptr. 3d 390, 74 P.3d 166 (II) (D) (74 P3d 166) (2003)  ruled that “[California’s] UFTA applies to property transfers under [marriage settlement agreements]” and “[i]n view of [the] overall policy of protecting creditors, it is unlikely that the Legislature intended to grant married couples a one-time-only opportunity to defraud creditors by including the fraudulent transfer in [a marriage settlement agreement].”
These cases can present difficult questions as a court tries to determine if the divorce was based on substantive rather than strategic motives.  Some cases like that of the Browns in Minnesota are easier due to such facts as the couple continuing live together. That will not be the case with the Chauvins since Derek Chauvin is in jail and will likely remain there.  However, if the family sues, they could raise this issue to seek assets from Kellie Chauvin.
Little is known about the assets of the estate or Kellie Chauvin’s personal wealth. She was born in Laos and came to the United States in 1977 at age three.  She was crowned as Mrs. Minnesota in 2018.
If the estate has limited assets, Derek Chauvin may decide that he is better off with a public defender since he would quickly exhaust his assets anyway.
Minnesota is a no fault jurisdiction so the case can move more quickly, particularly if there is no dispute on the dissolution of assets. However, a one-sided dissolution as with the Browns can itself be an indicator of fraud.

Why Coaches And QBs Should Divorce After Five Years Of Not Winning
Marvin Lewis’s time as head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals is expected to come to an end after this season. It has been a remarkable run of longevity given that Lewis has compiled a 0-7 playoff record in 15 seasons on the job. No head coach in NFL history has more playoff losses without a win than Lewis.
Lewis, who was hired by Cincinnati in 2003, is one of seven active coaches to have started his current job prior to the 2010 season. It’s an illustrious group that includes Bill Belichick, Mike McCarthy, Sean Payton, Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh and Pete Carroll. Next to those names, Lewis sticks out for an obvious reason: Every coach on the list has won a Super Bowl on his current team. But perhaps more telling, each one of them did so within five seasons on the job.
This is strikingly common in NFL history. Of the 31 head coaches to win at least one Super Bowl, 27 of them won their first championship within the first five seasons with that team. Only Chuck Noll (six years in Pittsburgh), John Madden (eight years in Oakland), Tom Landry (12 years in Dallas) and Bill Cowher (14 years in Pittsburgh) needed more than five years to capture that elusive first ring.
It could be argued that Lewis has lacked something most of those coaches enjoyed: a future Hall of Fame quarterback. Lewis never had an Aaron Rodgers or a Tom Brady. Instead, he’s had Carson Palmer and Andy Dalton, the current Bengals’ quarterback. Oddly enough, the closest Lewis ever came to winning a playoff game was in 2015, when Dalton was sidelined with an injury. AJ McCarron helped the Bengals to a late lead over the Steelers in the wild-card round, but Pittsburgh still won 18-16. That was the fifth season for the duo of Lewis and Dalton, and the Bengals haven’t made the playoffs in the two years since. Based on NFL history, there’s reason to believe that Lewis should have parted ways with the Bengals — or vice versa — after that season and not waited until now.
Call it The Five-Year Rule: No team has ever started the same quarterback under the same head coach for more than five years and seen that duo win its first championship. As you can see in the table, some really great duos just got their title together in the fifth year, but all 35 duos required no more than five years together.

This list raises a red flag for any quarterback-coach combination that has logged a lot of mileage together and not won it all — like Lewis and Dalton. If championship success doesn’t come within five years, things tend to get stale, and someone eventually has to move on from their position of power.
Plenty of great coach-QB combos have played together for longer periods of time without a Super Bowl, but even those pairs’ best years have tended to come early in their tenures. The great Don Shula coached Dan Marino for 13 years in Miami, but the duo reached only one Super Bowl — in 1984, Marino’s second season. Incredibly, some of the best duos to never win a championship had their best shot at one in their fifth season.
John Elway and Dan Reeves (1987 Broncos): The pair reached three Super Bowls together, but the only one that looked optimistic was Super Bowl XXII in year five, when Denver opened up a 10-0 lead before an avalanche of points by Washington buried the Broncos. Elway would win his first title with Mike Shanahan in their third year together.
Boomer Esiason and Sam Wyche (1988 Bengals): The high-powered offense was shut down by San Francisco in Super Bowl XXIII, but one more defensive stop against Joe Montana would have clinched a title.
Jim Kelly and Marv Levy (1990 Bills): The Bills lost Super Bowl XXV after Scott Norwood missed a potential game-winning field goal. Buffalo lost the next three Super Bowls as well but never came closer to winning than the first shot.
Matt Ryan and Mike Smith (2012 Falcons): The Falcons never had back-to-back winning seasons before Ryan was drafted and Smith was hired in 2008. Then they had five winning seasons in a row, but the peak was the 2012 season, when the Falcons blew a 17-point lead at home to the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
And more recently, Carolina’s Ron Rivera and Cam Newton reached the Super Bowl in 2015, their fifth season together, but lost to Denver. Now in their seventh year, the two are 10-4 and have an opportunity to defy The Five Year-Rule by winning their first championship this season.
A couple of other duos have also recently seen their five-year clock expire. In Arizona, this season was Bruce Arians and Carson Palmer’s fifth together. But a championship was not to be as Palmer broke his arm in Week 7, derailing the Cardinals’ season. This season was supposed to be the sixth year for Chuck Pagano and Andrew Luck in Indianapolis, but Luck couldn’t even get on the field in his recovery from shoulder surgery. Pagano is unlikely to return in 2018, while fans just hope that Luck can return to action.
Finally, there is the intriguing case of Andy Reid and Alex Smith in Kansas City, who are in the middle of their fifth season together. Reid and Smith already have some history working against them: Reid is in his 19th season as a head coach, and Smith is in his 13th season. Only one quarterback (Elway, 15th season) and one head coach (Cowher, 14th season) won their first championship more than a dozen years into their careers.
After a roller-coaster season, Kansas City has rebounded in recent weeks, easily dispatching of the Raiders and Chargers to regain control of the AFC West. Smith is enjoying a career-best season, but this fifth try may very well be his last shot at leading the Chiefs to a championship.
If Smith and Reid can’t bring home the trophy, their tenure together may be over. (Smith is a free agent, after all.) The Chiefs will likely obey The Five-Year Rule and give another combo a try — as the Bengals and Lewis probably should have done two years ago.
