So I know that current best practice is to refer to New Zealand as Aotearoa whenever possible, but:
When speaking about English and accents-for-English, it does feel a bit odd to say 'Aotearoan English' instead of 'New Zealand English/New Zealander accent,' since the English language and the English name are a result of the same colonization. Like, 'this is the accent of the language, in that language' or whatever. Should I refer to it as an Aotearoan accent, or does that suggest a slightly different accent, like which word you use to describe the accent indicates which language you learned first or which region you live in?
IDK, what do you guys think? I don't expect it to cause much fuss, whichever I use in this footnote, but I want to know if there's already a standard, and I couldn't figure out how to phrase the search for a search engine to help.
(I tend to overthink accent stuff due to my own background in terms of language; my first language was Serbian, but I speak Serbian with a noticeable American accent, and my parents speak English with a noticeable Serbian accent; despite that, people can still notice that my Serbian is of a Belgrade-and-rural-Croatia variety, because that's where my parents are from, so I arguably also have a Belgrade accent, which... yeah. Overthinking, and assuming other people/languages have the same kind of overthinking..)

Cursed thought
“To infinity and beyond” is a genuine program saying
There’s multiple potential meanings for the saying, just like “circuits” can apply to a lot of different things in the digital world. We can start simple simply by defining “Infinity” which is not quite heaven but more of an Olympus- a place on top of the mountain, somewhere beyond our skies. It’s probably less of a physical place to programs but that Users come from literal infinity a place beyond numbers, math and logic — the core tenants of their understanding etc
It’s less “you get rewarded and go there when you die” and more “the gods of creation spawned and wrote us out of it”
Potential meanings to the phrase
A way to express grief. Energy gets recycled into the system and reused by everyone and everything on a programs deresolution. So hoping they travel so far as infinity is a nice gesture
Basically the program equivalent of “to the end of the line”
Counterpart vows! Their relationships aren’t exactly like ours, they’re deeper and marriage isn’t really a thing but bonding literal code is a serious commitment so vowing to follow and be with each other “to infinity and beyond” is a really sweet idea?
This was meant to be silly but then thinking about it, it’s actually a really touching phrase taking on the implications of it. Also I think Sam would absolutely lose his shit if he stayed long enough to take in program vernacular.

"its okay to be not okay" replacements
["its okay to not be okay" replacements]
in the case of toxic positivity.
Tumblr media
as my qpp pointed out, the lack of the use of the phrase "its okay to not be okay", needs to be normalized. we need to normalize not being okay, but change our phrasing so we dont make this "not okay" feeling seem like a defult emotion rather than the signal it is.
while its normal to not feel okay that doesnt mean its actually okay to feel that way. feeling bad, sad, down, hurt, guilt, etc are all signs something is wrong and it needs working out.
saying its okay to feel that way brushes off the whole point that youre supposed to look into why you feel that way.
i also found an article bringing up a similar point here(link)
here's some better phrasing and quotes from a conversation we had on discord:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. "why dont you tell me about it/how you feel/your day, and we'll figure something out?"
this one offers a space to talk and figure out more about the "not okay" feeling as well as what may have caused it. sometimes people need to hear that its normal in the way that they'll feel heard.
4. to quote myself. "its normal to feel, but this feeling is telling you something is wrong and you need help working it out." feeling and having emotions is normal, its humanoid, its what a majority of living things if not all expirience. you are not to be ashamed for that and being made aware or reminded of the functions of feelings in general can help avoid or lessen that shame they might feel on top.
5. "its not wrong to feel a certain way" you dont have to necissarily encourage them to talk, but letting them know their emotions arent something they can turn off or on like a light switch let alone be at fault for, is a good start to things. its not wrong to have a reaction, thats normal, what you need to figure out is why you reacted that way. get to the route of the feeling.
6. "feeling bad is acceptible/normal"
a little weak but again, still a good start like other phrases.
7. "expiriencing (emotion) is completely natural"
more of another sentance starter than an entire phrase itself but its a good prompt and echorages digging deeper and opening up without feeling like youre weird/in the wrong/out of place for feeling that way.
of course you are entirely free to add your own phrases and/or even alter these to the specific context youre in, as you see fit. the more options the better and easier communication may be.

Will you write Luke/Simon? I love their dynamic. You can keep it platonic if you prefer I just think it’s nice seeing two rookies lean on each other the way they have
Simon Nemec is on his couch.
Or. Well, Simon Nemec is on his and Jack's couch, but right now its his couch because Jack has made himself scarce, laughing at Luke as he left their apartment telling Luke to give him a heads up when it was all clear to come back.
Luke had lobbed one of their throw pillows at Jack, hit him square in the ass because he has good aim, thank you very much, and then had to retrieve said pillow as Jack continued to laugh and laugh and laugh.
Simon had told Luke a number of times that he didn't understand Luke's nickname, "Rusty", and Luke, without thinking, had volunteered to watch the Ocean's Trilogy with him.
He's already good at watching movies with a European; he does it with Holtzy no problem.
But this European. This one is a problem.
Because Nemo is different.
Every other guy on their team knew Jack first.
But Nemo met Jack and Luke at the same time. And that means something.
It means something that they're both rookies. They're both defensemen rookies. Coach has handed both of them massive responsibilities from the get go. Luke on the first unit of the power play; Simon on the second unit of the power play and the penalty kill. They're both given big minutes each game. And sometimes, they even get to play together on the same D pair.
It means something that their time on the Devils will always be tied together. They will always be connected. They're going to be the future and they're going to be the future together. They're going to be the backbone of the Devils lineup for years to come.
It means something that they've hit it off so effortlessly. That even a slight language barrier can't dampen the connection they've made so quickly. That Luke is so drawn to him, that they're so drawn to each other.
And now Simon is on his couch and Luke's having a little bit of a crisis about the whole thing.
Because they spend so much time together on the ice and on the bench and at practice and now there's no hockey, there's just Matt Damon on the screen in a black turtleneck and Simon on his couch smiling, looking so bright and warm.
Simon who's cheeks are just a little red, who's made himself comfortable, who's quiet confidence has spread from his gliding on the ice to his stretching out in Luke's home. Everything about him amplified for the one man audience that is Luke Hughes.
Well.
At least he knows for sure he's a Hughes because here he is with his very own Emotional Support European (Boy)Friend.
He's pretty sure he can hear Jack cackling somewhere.
