>> Rating: M >> Ships: VashMeryl, One-sided Millionsummers, Minor Brad/Luida >> Archive Warnings: none >> Overall Content Warnings: emotional/psychological abuse, trauma, implied/referenced suicide, loss of parents, threats of violence, mind manipulation, canon character death (it's not Wolfwood), eventual smut, monsterfucking, alien genitalia, angst with a happy ending >> Ao3 Link (more comprehensive tags here)
Summary:
On his sixteenth birthday, Vash was framed for the murder of his human mother, Primera Rem Saverem. He's been on the run for the past five years, planet hopping to avoid the wrath of his twin brother Nai, the current Prime of the Cerberus System.
Meryl has a single mission: find Vash, her childhood best friend, and clear his name. The pair have been psychically linked since infancy—a relationship called an Unai—but five years ago, he cut off their connection. Refusing to believe Vash is a murderer, Meryl uses her ties to the royal court to search for him.
When she finally finds him on a backwater moon serving as a small town's local hero, she realizes convincing him to return home won't be as easy as she'd imagined.
----------
A/N: I decided to put the first installment of this fic on tumblr just to see how it does LOL It's primarily posted on Ao3 (link above), so check that out for more chapters!
----------
Prologue: Separation
Star Date: July 21, 223 H.E. (Human Era)
Location: Stryfe Station, 10000 km above Julai City, Bellephona
Meryl woke to a searing pain in her left arm.
In a panicked flail, she tried to sit up, only for nausea to slide through her, and she wretched until acid bittered her lips.
Oh God, why did it hurt? What was happening? Was she dying?
She clutched her left arm, grasping at her biceps. Still there. Still whole. No, not dying, but—what the hell had that been?
Sweat trickled down her brow as a low, keening moan escaped her. She quietly counted to herself, centered her mind as the pain ebbed into a dull throb.
Heart still racing, she sent a single word through her Unai bond: Vash?
No response.
A bright, cyan glow appeared at her bedside table: her phone signaling a call. Vash's picture—a photo of them sharing donuts—appeared. Why was he calling and not answering through the bond? It didn't matter if he was ten thousand kilometers away on Bellaphona, she could always hear and sense him through their connection. They'd been able to do so since infancy, long before either of them remembered it.
Meryl slid a shaking finger across the thin screen, ready to chew him out. “Vash, I–”
“Bug!” The panic in Nico's voice nearly knocked her sideways. “Thank God.”
“I—Nico? What's going on? Why do you have Vash's phone?”
Something like shouting crackled from the speaker. An adult's voice, maybe? Nico swore repeatedly, and the phone beeped, asking Meryl to switch to a video call. Nico's panicked face filled the screen. His tawny cheeks flushed red, and...was that blood on his brow?
“Nico?” she started, but he cut her off.
“It's, uh, bad,” Nico said. His mop of dark hair flopped over his eyes, and he rubbed at the blood on his forehead. “But—it's-Meryl, you gotta tell everyone on Stryfe Station to stay put, ya hear?” Despite training with the royal guard since he was ten, he still spoke with a strong Gunsmoke accent where he often slurred his vowels together. “Things are about to get real bad on planet.”
Meryl paused at the use of her actual name. Nico had a bad habit of giving his friends weird nicknames, and hers had always been Bug, because she hated insects, but also because she’d stopped growing at age twelve. The only time he used her real name was when it was serious.
So...how bad was this? And where were they? The palace? It was hard to tell…
The screen flickered as another figure tried to take the phone from Nico.
Vash.
The boys swore at each other, palms slapping, until Vash's face became front and center. The sight of him made Meryl jerk back. Sweat drenched his forehead, and his eyes were rimmed red, as if he'd been crying.
“Hey,” was all he said, as if this were a totally normal conversation.
Meryl had only existed in this universe for sixteen years, and never had she wanted to punch him as badly as she did then.
“Don't you 'hey' me when you look like that!” Tears welled in her eyes, and she wasn't sure if it was her emotions or his. He could be such a crybaby. “What’s going on? What did you two do?”
“It’s nothing.” Vash's breathing came out in soft, shallow pants. He looked as if he were crouching behind something, and he held his shoulders at an odd angle. He was hurt somewhere, probably his arm, which must have been what had woken her. It still throbbed. “I can handle it.”
Nico shouted, “Like hell you can handle it! I'm going to kill you if—”
Meryl grit her teeth. “Vash, why didn't you answer in the bond?” She probed for his memories, but he quickly set up a mental block. It felt like slamming into a wall.
“Vash!” she practically screamed, hurt. He hadn't tried to keep her out in years, not since they'd been trained on how to do so, and he'd vowed to never, ever leave her again. Not after how hard she'd cried, how absolutely alone she had felt in her head without him.
His eyes shot back to the camera, a look of sheer panic stressing the lines of his mouth. His heart rate had skyrocketed, forcing hers to do the same.
His throat bobbed with a swallow. “Mery, I need you to listen to me.”
“Do not use that name with me right now,” she hissed. “Vash, I swear—”
“I need to cut the connection.”
Connection? With the phone? Meryl's fingers slid over the transparent keyboard, to make sure nothing was wrong, to make sure she could stop him from ending the call too soon.
Not with the phone, he said through the bond.
Meryl froze.
What? It sounded like a whisper. A brief, paralyzing echo.
He didn't respond, just...smiled. She knew that smile. The soft, tender thing he gave her when he was trying to hide something behind his court mask.
“Not permanently,” he said. Something crashed behind him, and he hissed through his teeth as Nico swore. “But I can...disable it, sort of. Make it so dull that you won't feel me, because it won't be safe for us to talk for a while. I'll...I'll tell you everything afterward, okay?”
I'm sorry, he added, just for her.
Meryl's heart slammed against her ribcage. She was going to wring his neck. Crawl through time and space, grab him by the ears and shake him. “Vash Saverem, I swear to the stars above, if you do not tell me what’s going on, right now—“
“We gotta go, Needle-Noggin!” Nico snatched the phone, and with an aggressive click, the call died.
“Vash!” Meryl tried to call again. No answer.
Again, and again.
It only went to voicemail.
A warmth so delicate sank through the bond. It wrapped around Meryl's heart, like a gentle squeeze. Like a lingering hug.
I love you, it said. I love you I love I love you, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Please don’t hate me forever. I’ll come get you when it’s safe.
And then.
Nothing.

Report: Wall Street Journal Obtains Unseen Photos Of Bill Gates And Alleged Epstein Victim
Tumblr media
(L) Pedestrians walk past the Wall Street Journal building at 1155 6th Avenue May 1, 2007 in New York City. (Photograph by Michael Nagle/Getty Images) / (R) Microsoft co-founder and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-Chair, Bill Gates.
OAN’s Brooke Mallory
Years after the notorious sex offender’s conviction, an undisclosed image of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates with one of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims appeared in an article that highlighted the financier’s manipulations.
An anonymous Polish model stood smiling alongside Gates, her face hidden under a blue scarf over her neck and a gray jacket across her shoulders. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) revealed how the now-deceased Epstein was responsible for the photograph.
The image, which is thought to be one of the earliest to feature Gates with an alleged Epstein victim, was purportedly taken at Gates’ Seattle office in March 2014 by the dubious financier himself, years after Epstein was found guilty in Florida in 2008 of soliciting and obtaining minors for prostitution.
“In March 2014, Jeffery Epstein took his private jet to Seattle to visit Bill Gates at his office. Epstein brought along a Polish model he had met a few months earlier. Dressed in a long gray coat, she posed for a photo with the Microsoft co-founder. Epstein took the picture,” the WSJ reported.
The billionaire was also seen posing with a Russian model at the financier’s Manhattan home and at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York City, according to the publication, which claimed that at least three additional images of Gates with Epstein accusers existed.
Furthermore, it has been revealed that the Polish model that appears in the picture with Gates was also pictured with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, former CBS News reporter Charlie Rose, and filmmaker Woody Allen.
Similarly to Epstein, the filmmaker is no stranger to being connected to sexual allegations involving underage girls. Allen has been accused of molestation by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, who claims that he was highly inappropriate with her when she was just 7-years-old. Allen’s ex-girlfriend, actress Mia Farrow, also told the press that she had discovered pornographic photos of her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn in Allen’s home when Soon-Yi was just 21-years-old and Allen was 56-years-old.
The WSJ report detailed how Epstein was accused of luring in additional victims by manipulating wealthy and well-connected individuals as he harassed young women with promises of professional development for their careers or by just simply offering them massive cash rewards. The WSJ was reportedly informed by the Polish model that Epstein had offered her “millions of dollars” if she accepted to be the mistress of one of his close friends.
However, she turned down the offer and went back to Poland in 2015.
“My impression is that becoming a mistress was the only one job proposition you were really serious about,” she purportedly wrote to Epstein. “Meeting Gates or Woody was great — thank you — will never forget it — although nobody [will] hire me just because I have a nice pictures with them.”
According to Brad Edwards, who is legally defending the Polish woman alongside law firm partner Brittany Henderson, he told the WSJ, “Without having legitimate connections to so many high-powered people, Jeffrey Epstein would not have been able to traffic most of these women after 2008.”
“He used the powerful people he was intermingling with to further facilitate his sex trafficking scheme, whether those people knew it or not. He was using everyone around him to create this façade of legitimacy,” Edwards continued.
The financier reportedly documented every move he made as well as the conversations between him and his victims, even requiring written thank-you letters from them if he had performed any sort of favor so that they could be used as blackmail or some sort of legal protection, according to the Russian model and Epstein complainant who spoke to the publication.
“It was almost like he was documenting everything, so we can’t go against him,” she said. “If you’re not smiley and positive, he was going to give you a talk, because then you’re acting ungrateful. And those gratitude letters—I’m sure he was using them as just another guarantee that we wouldn’t go against him.”
In response to questions regarding his meetings with Epstein in 2021, Gates informed broadcaster Judy Woodruff in a PBS interview that “I said I regretted having those dinners, and there’s nothing, absolutely nothing new on that.”
A spokesman for Gates also reached out to the WSJ and claimed that “Epstein tried, unsuccessfully, to connect himself to Mr. Gates by any means possible, including spontaneously bringing in people for photos with Bill, whom Bill did not know or interact with further.”
Additionally, Woody Allen expressed a similar sentiment.
“At no time did he ever request I cast anyone in a movie—and I never did it,” Allen maintained.
Towards the end of the piece, the Russian model expressed disappointment and embarrassment after telling the outlet that “After a couple of years in the JE circle, none of us had any legitimate things to add to our résumés, and none of the jobs he promised ever materialized.”
The Russian model and Polish model’s identities have been kept anonymous.

It was 10 years ago today: Brad Mehldau Trio’s Where Do You Start was released on Nonesuch Records. What’s your favorite track on the album? You can hear it again here.
Where Do You Start is a companion album to Ode, which had been released six months prior. Whereas Ode features eleven songs composed by Mehldau, on Where Do You Start the Trio—bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Jeff Ballard—interprets ten tunes by other composers, like Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, Sufjan Stevens, Elvis Costello, Sonny Rollins, Chico Buarque, Nick Drake, and Johnny Mandel, along with one Mehldau original.
"The pianist builds his improvisation like a master storyteller," said NPR. The BBC said it "points to Mehldau entering a new prime phase in his career."

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at a desk in the Mi-Soul office, fully dressed, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Happy Hump Day!
Not a huge fan of women’s league football but I really enjoyed The Lionesses’ win last night! England’s best really are very good. Those girls really give it their all! I love their energy and application, there’s no shortage of skill and they definitely know where the goal is! Looking forward to the final on Sunday.
I’ll be back on Mi-Soul this morning at 7.00 a.m. Hope you can join me? Thank you for all your kind comments. Doing ‘Mi-Breakfast’ truly messes with your body clock but it’s a joy to help you get your day started right.
I’m really happy to say that, this weekend, I am going nowhere and doing nothing! The Mighty Josiah will be mightily pleased about this. When The Trouble and I go out of town, he is never happy and actually complains out loud. So, if I come home after my radio show and sit in an armchair next to him, he knows I am at his beck and call. In addition to this, my beautiful granddaughter Shadae is coming to see me, so it will be a house full of these people that I love very deeply. Thankfully, there will not be pictures of my sickly-sweet smile, as I look on in pride at my grandbabies, but I will make sure I get photos of everyone else. There’s only one thing better than kids and that’s grandkids!
Sad to report the passing of actor Paul Sorvino. Not a name you might know but, if you Google him, you’ll know his face. Not a lead actor like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt but a ‘character’ actor and an essential member of any cast. Survived by his amazing actress daughter Mira Sorvino, who won an Oscar in the 1995 movie ‘Mighty Aphrodite’, and then appeared in ‘Modern Family’.
We are all sitting and waiting for one of two liars to be nominated prime minister. Politicians lie to get elected. They will make the most outlandish promises, with no hope of ever keeping them. I just wish this process would hurry up and we could fast-forward to a general election!
Sending out LOTS of love to my beautiful friend Bud Bissell, who is a bit poorly at the moment. Speedy recovery, lovely!
Have a wonderful and well-endowed Wednesday. I love you all. Yes, a crazy, bald man loves and cares about you.

Fix’er Upper Pt. 4
Tumblr media
Pairing: Eventual Frankie Morales x Reader Warnings: Injury, swearing, mentions of ptsd and drug use Length: 2k Notes: Hello my Freaky Darlings! I was watching The Martian while writing this and didn’t edit so bear with me and forgive errors!
Part One, Two, Three
Damn your stubborn pride. Damn it, and your swollen wrist, all to hell. Now that you were back at home, nursing your previously ignored injury, it was easy to forget why you had felt the need to work through the pain. Prime harvesting season was ending and all the old farmers in town were predicting an early frost. Knowing how this would destroy any unpicked apples, you had worked hard all day.
Frankie had grumbled at you once, an hour into the workday when he saw you emptying your half-full basket into one of the tractor-pulled bins. You didn't feel like explaining your stupid injury, or risk drawing his memory to when you eye-fucked him, so you just grumbled back an assurance that your total count would be the same.
He was slightly more attentive than usual, and you were worried he had read more into your glances than you had meant. Because, you still hated the guy, right? His... what was it again? Arrogance? Yes! That was it.
Not wanting to encourage any more misconceptions, and still trying to hide your damn swollen wrist, you worked through your breaks and barely stopped for lunch.
Frankie had finally put his foot down when Jacquie had arrived with stew and biscuits for dinner, forcing you off the ladder and stashing it away to make sure you didn’t get the idea to head up again that day.
You had successfully hidden your swollen wrist from him but knew that Jacquie had a much keener eye. So while you were remiss to leave the company of your friend you begged off dinner, citing exhaustion, and went home.
Now though, with a meal that paled in comparison to Jacquie’s cooking, and your bound wrist on ice, you wished you had stayed.
That is until you remember the moment when you had stared at your boss's lips for an inappropriately long time. With a groan, you decided to leave the dishes for tomorrow, just wanting to bury your head under your blankets and try to bury your embarrassment as well.
Tumblr media
The sound of rain pelting against the window woke you a few short hours later. You would have just gone back to sleep but the memory of leaving a few windows open forced you out of bed. By the time you made it downstairs, the gentle rain had turned to a downpour of sleet and you could feel the cold air blowing through the house.
Your mind immediately went to the orchard. If this storm got any worse, a sizeable section of un-picked trees would be rendered worthless. Grabbing your boots and discarded coat off the floor, you rushed to your truck with freezing rain stinging your face. It wasn't until you were near the end of the driveway that you realized you hadn't closed any of the windows.
That wasn't what caused you to slam on the brakes, though. Frankie's truck had just turned down your driveway, fishtailing around the bend as he barely slowed down in his hurry. Seeing you at the last minute, he braked hard but the slush already accumulating on the ground caused him to skid. The impact wasn't hard but your smaller truck wouldn't be road-worthy any longer.
Wrenching your doors open and coming around the assess the damage Frankie was swearing while you were trying to decide whether to laugh or cry.
"What the hell are you doing?" Frankie called to you from across your crumpled hood.
"Me? ME?!" You countered, voice becoming shrill from panic and stress. "What the hell are YOU doing?!"
"Coming you help you and save your damn house from this storm!" He yelled back, giving a little jump and waving his arms out of frustration. It would have been comical under different circumstances. "This is gonna flood your fuckin' house!"
"Your orchard!" You were hollering now "This is going to ruin the rest of the apples!"
Jerking his head back Frankie looked at you with confusion, "What the hell are you worried about them for?"
His query forced you to stop and wonder that for yourself.
"I-" you stuttered, feeling a little silly "I don't know? Are you really going to argue with me though?! We've wasted enough time..."
Heaving a sigh, Frankie jerked his head towards his truck and growled, "Get in."

In a desperate bid to save as much of the fruit as possible, you and Frankie laid tarps down under as many trees as you could. Shaking the branches caused the ripened fruit to fall and you just prayed the rest would survive the sudden storm which had now turned to snow.
Working together you dragged each tarp towards the tractor and took turns driving the filled bins into the barn. It wasn’t a heated cab but still a nice respite from the blizzard.
By five a.m. you had done as much as possible and the adrenaline that had once been surging through the both of you had long faded. The snow had now slowed to a light drizzle but the ground was a slippery, muddy mess, as so were the both of you. Once Frankie noticed the shivers that wracked your body he ushered you into the barn and up the side stairs into his loft.
“It’s not much but it’s enough.” was his way of welcoming you into the space. It was cozy but lacking in luxuries or personal touches.
While Frankie got busy making tea and warming soup in the kitchen you explored the loft. It was one large room broken into three basic areas: his bed in one corner with a small bathroom just off the side, a kitchenette along the opposite wall, and a couch flanked by rocking chairs faced a fireplace at the end. Making your way over to the fireplace you intended on getting a fire going but were distracted by the photos decorating the mantel.
“You served?” Your voice came out sounding loud and strained, not at all the casual way you had intended. Frankie had been gruff with you but never unkind, however, seeing photos of him in uniform instantly raised your hackles. It was an automatic response from being reminded of your husband and you hated it.
Shaking the thought of Brad from your mind, you realized Frankie hadn’t answered and was just standing next to you, staring at the photos with a blank look on his face.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have pried” you spoke softly, not wanting to spook him from his reverie.
You had seen that far-off look on your husband’s face when he had been home between tours. It had always been best to stay quiet and out of sight when he had gotten like that.
Frankie took a sudden step in your direction. That movement, mixed with the current memories swirling in the forefront of your brain, caused you to reflexively throw your arms up to cover your face. Hot tea spilled out of the mug Frankie had been passing to you and immediately burned the skin on your hands and arm.
“I’m sorry!” you cry out, immediately, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!” Tears were spilling down your cheeks and you had instantly curled up, trying to make yourself as small as possible.
“Shhhhhh, no, nononono, shhhhhh” Frankie was frantically trying to reassure you while simultaneously trying to get close enough to assess how bad the damage to your skin was. He seemed to know that you were feeling unsafe so he made himself small and lowered himself to the floor. “That was completely my fault, right? Can I see?”
Taking a deep, shuddering breath you calmed yourself enough to see the warmth and worry in his eyes. Your heart immediately constricted for an entirely new reason when you noticed his posturing, how he had made himself smaller than you and had his hands out wide where you could see them, waiting for you to show him the severity of the burns.
This man had dealt with PTSD before.
Nodding, you reached out both hands for Frankie to take and tried to swallow the embarrassment you felt from your little breakdown. That emotion was quickly forgotten, however, when Frankie finally got a look at you and noticed, for the first time, just how swollen your wrist was.
“What happened here?” he asked, sternly “Were you working all day like this?”
“It’s nothing,” you assured him, trying to pull your hands out of his firm but gentle grip, “just a little mishap from this morning. Don’t worry, though, I was able to work just fine.”
He let out of huff of frustration. “You think I’m worried about how many apples you picked? Jesus Christ, you must think I’m the biggest asshole around.”
“No,” you said quietly, still trying to calm down but also wanting to relieve the tension, “that title belonged to my husband. You,” you continued, ignoring the way his head snapped up to your face then back down to check your bare ring finger, “are just the biggest grump around and it’s intimidating.”
Frankie was silent again and watched his jaw tic as he digested this new information. He was still staring at your hands, cradled in his. The bright red hue of your skin must have jarred him from his thoughts because he quickly but carefully stood up, pulling you up with him, and ushered you towards the kitchen. As you sat on the counter with cold tap water flowing over your burning skin, Frankie flitted about searching for salves and gauze to protect the skin once it had been sufficiently cooled. You tried to reassure him that you would be fine but he wasn't hearing it.
He was talking now, hadn't stopped rambling, but of nothing consequential. You had a feeling there were a lot of secrets stored in his heart but knew you weren't in a position to be trusted with them. You found yourself wishing that you were. You hadn't realized you were nodding off, the strain of the past 24 hours finally catching up on you, until Frankie had called your name for the fourth time. He was, respectfully, keeping his distance not wanting to startle you again, but hovering close enough by to catch you if you slumped over in your doze.
"Come on," he murmured sleepily, "let me take you home. We're not getting any more work done here for a while so take a few days to rest."
Tumblr media
"Oh Christ," you guffawed in a very unladylike manner, "how did I forget?"
"It looks worse in the light of day." Frankie chimed in, ruefully.
The two of you sat in the idling truck staring at the crumpled hood of your poor truck, which was inconveniently blocking your driveway.
"I'll call for a tow."
While he was on the phone he climbed out of the cab, assessing the damage and trying to figure out how much this was going to cost him. A few minutes later he made his way back into the warmth of his truck, "He won't be here till tomor-". Frankie let the sentence trail off once he noticed you'd fallen asleep, bundled up in the fleece jacket he had lent you. Sitting back in his seat, watching the sunrise dance across your face, Frank took a moment to think about everything that had transpired in such a short amount of time.
Closing his eyes and leaning his head back against the seat, he figured he'd let you sleep for a few more minutes before making you wake and have to walk the rest of the way to your house.
"As I live and breath..."
Jacquie's jubilant voice woke the both of you with a start. It was evening and Frankie's truck had been idling in your driveway for nearly 8 hours with the two of you passed out cold in the cab. At some point, you had shifted and were resting against Frankie's chest, his body turned toward yours and his arms wrapped tightly around you.
"Mark!" She continued to yell, "You owe me fifty bucks!"

New interview with Alexander Skarsgård and Men’s Health Australia:
‘Why Alexander Skarsgård Might Be Bigger Than King Kong’
The Swedish superstar talks career moves and the joys of creativity on the set of Godzilla v Kong. - by Ben Jhoty
Alexander Skarsgård’s bruised face is bathed in pale blue light as he sits in the cockpit of a makeshift aircraft inside a darkened soundstage at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, where he’s shooting a scene from Godzilla v Kong (currently in cinemas).
The scene requires Skarsgård and fellow cast member, English actress Rebecca Hall, to endure an explosion that violently rocks the craft, positioned on a gimble, then survey the battle scene below. Before the scene begins Skarsgård listens intently to notes from director Adam Wingard and takes some deep breaths, as if he’s preparing for a 150kg deadlift. Someone yells action. The gimble rocks furiously for a few seconds before steadying. “Looks like round two goes to Kong,” says Skarsgård, before Wingard yells cut.
Between takes Skarsgård sprays himself with an Evian bottle before turning to young co-star Kaylee Hottle, who’s seated in the back of the cockpit.
“Have you ever tried menthol for tears?” he asks. “If you have to pretend to be sad about monsters that aren’t here, use menthol. Take a menthol stick home and every time your parents say you can’t do something, you spray.”
For the next take, Wingard instructs the actors to appear both “relieved and stunned”. The gimble duly starts shaking and Skarsgård repeats his line. “Nailed them both,” he jokes to Hall afterwards.
After the scene wraps, Skarsgård walks across the soundstage floor and is briefly silhouetted against the studio lights. You’re instantly struck by his rangy frame. He’s wearing a latex suit with parachute straps to play geologist Dr Nathan Lind, a geek with a love of ’80s action movies, who finds himself with ringside seats to the biggest rumble in the so-called ‘MonsterVerse’.
“I wanted to find his idiosyncrasies and avoid the stereotypical action hero because that wasn’t very appealing to me and I thought it would be way more interesting if the guy is not equipped for that and is thrown into that role,” the 44-year-old says later of his mild-mannered character. “It makes his journey more interesting if he’s not a tough guy, he’s not an ex-marine. He’s a geologist, so for him to get thrown into this is scary. I thought it would be fun to play him that way because then the stakes would be higher for the audience as well. They can see he’s out of his depth there. He has no idea what he’s doing.”

The son of legendary Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård (Breaking The Waves, Good Will Hunting, Avengers: Age of Ultron), Skarsgård divides his time between Stockholm and Hollywood. His siblings are also actors, most notably, Bill (Pennywise), who was due to star alongside Alexander in upcoming Viking saga The Northman, but had to drop out due to scheduling problems.
The two haven’t appeared together since 2000’s White Water Fury and are rarely up for the same films, let alone roles, Skarsgård says.
“That could be tough if you were super excited about something and you want it and then your brother gets it,” he jokes. “Because if you don’t get a job, you don’t want to be at Christmas dinner hearing your brother talk about how amazing that experience was.”
As it is, it looks like this Christmas he’ll be telling Bill about his experience watching two iconic monsters duke it out in the mother of all monster mashups. The role is an exhilarating departure from the serious, sometimes dark roles that Skarsgård’s been playing the last couple of years, most notably perhaps, domestic abuser Perry Wright on Big Little Lies, for which he collected Golden Globe, Prime Time Emmy and Screen Actors’ Guild awards.
While you might think a big-budget action flick would be creatively stifling, Skarsgård relishes the opportunity to exercise his range and keep challenging himself. “It’s tonally quite different from what I’ve been doing,” he admits. “I’ve been doing smaller indies and slightly more cerebral projects and also quite dark, intense subject matter. It’s not so much about ‘I want to do this and then I want to do that’ to show that I can, it’s just a way more fun way of working. It’s easy to get stereotyped and pigeonholed. If you’re lucky enough to jump between genres and different types of characters, then you’d be crazy if you didn’t embrace that.”
Skarsgård’s IMDB is certainly eclectic, with roles ranging from thousand-year-old vampire Eric in True Blood, to stoic commando, Brad ‘Iceman’ Colbert, in Generation Kill. “It’s always nice to work on something that different from what you’ve done in the past because that will just ignite something and it’s not repetitive,” he says. “Those are always the most fun contrasts, the dichotomies. A couple of years ago I did Tarzan and Diary of a Teenage Girl back-to-back and they’re so diametrically opposite in scale and tone. I had an amazing time on both of them and it’s so fun to go from one to the other.”
When it comes to choosing roles, Skarsgård looks for material that’s not only going to push him in new directions but is also enjoyable. It’s that sense of fun, he says, that fosters creativity.
“I just want to have a good time,” he says, smiling. “And I also want to learn and grow from every experience. Most importantly, I think if I go into a project and I’m not super excited about it, it’s not a good place to start because creatively you’re not going to give 100 per cent. Even if you try to give 100 per cent, you won’t because you’re not completely open. I find if I read a script and I know the character, like I totally get the character and how to play it, there’s no sense of discovery and that doesn’t trigger creativity. You just step in there and do it.”
True to his word, Skarsgård’s character in his next project, The Northman, couldn’t be more different from Nathan, the geeky geographer. At the same time, you could say it’s a role he was born to play: a ripped Nordic prince.
