Extremely funny (and by funny I mean aggravating) to me that other people who use neopronouns want to have strict definitions of what makes something a neopronouns or not, with the definition they've chosen excluding people.

"Something can only be a neopronoun if it was created after 1800!"

so you think thee/thy/thou/ect. as personal pronouns aren't neopronouns?

Why use a definition that /by definition/ is going to exclude people who face the same challenges?

By the above definition, it/its pronouns aren't neopronouns.

How does that help anyone? Are you going to argue that people who use it/its pronouns aren't marginalized? Are you going to argue that society as a whole is more accepting of it/its pronouns than other neopronouns?

Like I hate to break it to you (except no, I don't) but it/its pronouns are literally treated as /even worse/ than other neopronouns 90% of the time.

And same with they/them pronouns! Yeah, sure, /queer activists/ and other people actively fighting for trans rights are fine with using they/them as singular pronouns, but most people still act like it's an impossible request that's too confusing and impossible to accomplish.

I've seen multiple instances of people being hold that they/them is too confusing, can't they just make up some new pronouns instead?

Just because some Queer people are accepting of they/them pronouns does not mean people who use they/them pronouns have the same privileges as those who use he/him or she/her.

Literally just look at any fictional character who uses they/them pronouns, and look at the way the fandom has to fight tooth and nail to get people to stop misgendering them. Look at Kris from Deltarune and tell me people who use they/them pronouns are treated with just as much respect as those who use he/him or she/her. The majority of people literally think a character using they/them means their pronouns and gender are up for the reader to decide! Even when the story they're in explicitly tells you otherwise!

Look at any fucking section of The Murderbot Diaries fandom, and tell me people who use it/its pronouns are treated with just as much respect as those who use he/him or she/her.

People who use it/its pronouns aer told we need to just use they/them, because calling someone an it is dehumanizing and wrong no matter what.

People who use they/them are told they just need to make up brand new pronouns, because using "they" for a single person is too confusing and impossible.

If you decide that people only belong in the neopronoun community if their pronouns were invented after 1800, you are excluding so many people, many of whom are literally treated worse than other neopronoun users most of the time.

How can you be Queer and then turn around and say that "no actually, Neopronouns are the one thing that must have a strict, unwavering definition set in stone, so no, you don't belong, because your pronouns are older than mine, so that means you do not face any of the same challenges I do, even though you often explicitly face even more criticism than I do?"

I've literally had people who use nothing but neopronouns tell me that I can't use it/its pronouns because they're evil and dehumanizing and bad, and I just have to use they/them or pick some "acceptable" neopronouns.

The entire point of the neopronoun community is to support people whose pronouns are not accepted by society. If you set up a strict, unwavering definition of who is and is not allowed in, you are literally excluding so many fucking people who need the exact same support.

It/its are neopronouns because one of the people I told my pronouns to in real life laughed, then waited for me to also laugh, saw that I wasn't laughing, and went, "Wait, you are joking, right? You can't really expect anyone to call you an it, right? Tell me you're joking." Then literally stormed away when I told them no, I wasn't joking, my pronouns were in fact it/its.

They/them are neopronouns because have you literally ever just fucking talked to someone who uses they/them pronouns? Have you never seen the way people treat those who use they/them pronouns?? Do you pay attention at all??

Just because they/them pronouns are **Sometimes** seen as more acceptable than neopronouns doesn't erase the fact that they're also **Sometimes** seen as less acceptable. And neither of those instances erases the fact that people who use they/them are constantly misgendered, looked down upon, and viciously mocked.

"What do I hope to gain by excluding people who use it/its and they/them from the neopronoun community?"

"Who does it help that I am excluding people from the neopronoun community?"

"What am I trying to accomplish by excluding people?"

"Why do I think it's important that it/its and they/them not be considered neopronouns?"

If your answer to any of these questions is, "Well, I'm looking for new pronouns to try out..."

congratulations.

That's what the terms nounself pronouns and novapronouns are for.

The Neopronoun community is for everyone whose pronouns are not accepted by society as a whole. Unless you're going to pretend that people who use it/its and they/them are treated with the exact same level of respect as those who use he/him and she/her (which inherently makes you an asshole), any argument you make to exclude them is just going to make you look like an exclusionist jerk.

Being Queer is about breaking down walls, not building them.

The Neopronoun community should be supporting eveyone whose pronouns are not accepted by society, and that includes people who use it/its or they/them.

Kris isn't a player insert but their gender is up for interpretation. It's like in a voice acted game where you can name your character, so no one actually calls your character by name. So it can be whatever you want.

I'm sick of people like you harassing people and acting like they're awful for having headcanons. I've seen 12 year olds get freaked out at by people like you.

Your argument here doesn't make much sense to me. In most games where you can name your character, there isn't a literal scene saying you don't get to choose who you are in this world. Kris isn't customizable! There is an entire CUTSCENE about how they aren't customizable! You literally make an entire custom character, name them, and they are then discarded and you play as kris instead! the game is REALLY clear that kris isnt just a normal rpg protagonist like youd get from games where they’re more customizable. The fact you even made this comparison at all proves you didn't fucking get the point of my original post! If you acknowledge that they aren't a player insert, why are you comparing them to a game where you can name a character whatever you want? If Kris isn't a player insert like you said, why is it OK to misgender them when they are *exclusively* referred to by they/them in the text? Their mom calls them they, their teacher, etc. You can argue they're nonbinary to make the character more neutral and relatable to all genders (which I bring up in the tags of my post), but they're still exclusively they/them in game.

Using your "characters not referring to the player by name" argument, if the point was for kris' gender to be up to interpretation why wouldn't deltarune just... Do this? I'm sure the writers are more than capable of avoiding using any pronouns at all for kris, so why use they/them exclusively? Especially in a series where multiple NON player characters are also they/them only like blooky and monster kid. We also see multiple characters not referred to by any pronouns at all in game like the shopkeepers (though seam is called they/them on stream) and undyne before she is properly introduced, so it is DEFINITELY possible and something realistic to take into account here.

I have NEVER seen this shit happen with cis characters who by go exclusively he or she which is why this bugs me so much. You can name link whatever you want in some of the earlier Zelda games, but you don't see people arguing that his gender is up to interpretation, or that him being a dude isn't canon because they choose to see him as a girl. This ONLY happens with nonbinary characters (and sometimes trans character, or just those who are androgynous but it's mostly NBs) and I am sick of arguing about this!

Dunno if this one is unpopular but like please stop misgendering Napstablook and Monster kid xD they are both they/them and further proof of that is how Blooky was called only by they/them in the alarm clock dialogue thing we got awhile ago! Which made me really happy to see as it only further cemented the fact they go by they/them! And MK doesn’t get called by any other pronouns in the game than they/them and I wish ppl could stop, like yes mistakes can happen when you accidently do it but gods I wish ppl would get better at it xD

Likewise with Frisk and Chara, though I have mostly given up caring there since like it’s so far gone now since ppl keep making them into their own like little inserts into the game, for shipping etc, even though the whole point with Frisk is that they are their own person and not you or your own character. Likewise with Kris from Deltarune, they are they/them, they are their own character the one you literally create at the start of the game gets tossed into the trash because Kris is their own person, just please don’t do a Frisk and Chara there too, it makes me pissed af xD

Also all the like shipping drama that happens time to time, like I don’t care what you ship as long as you properly tag it so ppl can blacklist it etc. Like hey it’s completely ok not to like fontcäst or fr*ns etc, and it’s completely ok to like it as well, either way I support you! But this constant like need for ppl to send hate to ppl who enjoy such ships, telling them how this is p*do stuff and fucked up, ppl doing so is what is fucked up because you can literally just go the fuck away and block the ppl, the tags and so on and move the fuck on! It’s so easy, you don’t have to enjoy it, just leave people the fuck alone man xD I miss the older fandom days when ppl were all like “this isn’t my thing but you do you” and then moved the fuck on

Not to mention how many ppl I have seen in their bio’s telling ppl who ship those things to die like srsly wth is wrong with you, you’re the one who needs help between the two of us gkjegkje

And lastly before I end up writing like 24 pages of me just ranting, the whole babyfying of Papyrus, I know it’s like stuck from the early days of this fandom but gods it’s the absolute worst! Same when it happens to swap sans too, like holy shit I just can’t stand it and I am happy to see with the part of the fandom I am in how pretty much all my friends and mutuals or ppl I follow agree with me there because it’s just so bad, so bad to turn them into literal children mentally and then have their brothers treat them as if they were 5 years old when they are flipping adults! Or make them so stupid that they don’t even know what sex is like gods just please stop xD

But that’s all ya get, I also prolly worded shit weirdly or badly but it will do pft! But overall the fandom is great, I never been this active or spent this long been active in a fandom before like this, I love it so much and I don’t think I will leave for a very very long time, nothing else have caught my interest like this before, and while the fandom can make me go absolutely mad at times, so would I not want to leave as there is too much good stuff here that I enjoy and love ❤

im so smad over how most things try to go out of their way to be like ‘oh well its up for interpretation’ or try to explain away nonbinary characters’ genders in a way that makes sense so that its not them being nonbinary, its Just that they arent male or female because this thing!

like come on you had the ball then you fuckin dropped it by saying people can use whatever pronouns and while im sure there are nonbinary people who use every pronoun it sucks when the canon explicitly uses they and then people just. paste their own idea of gender onto them like theyre some sort of blank slate when they arent. and even if they WERE it wouldnt give people a free pass to just paste whatever pronouns onto them?

like...i see so many people who have no idea that characters like wx-78 from dont starve are nonbinary because their identity is erased so much when the game refers to them as explicitly they/them and uses mx. as a gender neutral title. frisk from undertale is one of (few) nonbinary human characters. they used they/them pronouns the ENTIRE game and at the end the twist was hey! frisk is THEIR OWN PERSON. and even if they were a stand-in for the player, what makes autonomy = getting gendered correctly?? you’d still correct yourself if a cat or a dog gets misgendered, why the fuck cant the same courtesy be given to nonbinary people? binary people’s genders are not ‘up for interpretation’ all the time because people would get real fucking salty about it. from what ive seen its only nonbinary characters and on occasion binary trans people as an excuse to misgender them. (also, chara, kris, monster kid, napstablook, and several others from undertale are nonbinary but get similar erasure because people gender them as well) with warframe, xaku came out i was so excited because hell yeah they look so cool and have the aesthetics that are right up my alley...and then people used binary pronouns or used it even if their pronouns were Right There in their desc and while people use it pronouns for warframes a lot its like. you use ember’s and excalibur umbra’s just fine? whats stopping you with xaku?? (not even gonna start with nezha or else i will get actually angry at how people treat him)

there’s an argument to be had over them being a robot/described as broken/made of multiple parts but...the canon still uses they? so use they? fucks sake?

idk it just...gets me tilted at the towers or whatever but i legitimately hope that there’s a nonbinary character that doesnt have any like explanation for them being nonbinary and they just...are. give me nonhuman characters who are like ‘yeah im nonbinary! i use they/them and i dont have an explanation behind why. i just am’. give me more (sorely needed) human nonbinary characters that are treated with respect and not just referred to as whatever pronoun Works For You. please god give me characters that are like ‘hey, i am this thing! specifically!’ and not dodge the word by using everything but the word nonbinary.

shit maybe im just an Angry Enby but goddamn if its not insulting that my entire identity can be erased from a character by being like ‘WELL- JUST- I- BUT- WELL I MEAN- ’ just. use. the right. pronouns. its not hard.

edit: i should also add that there is a difference between a nonbinary person hcing a character to use both they and another pronoun and people intentionally using the wrong ones and while ik sometimes people dont always know a character is nonbinary it’d be appreciated if they could at least correct themselves when it happens

every character in undertale that uses they/them is canonically nonbinary

and before you get mad, let’s take a look at what nonbinary means:

chara, frisk, kris and several other characters in undertale are never explicitly defined as male or female, instead, only ever referred to with gender neutral language and pronouns throughout the game. these characters would fall under the definition of nonbinary.

to nonbinary and trans people, these characters are representation. these characters are important to everyone, but the fact that they positively represent this part of us (being nonbinary) that is so often ignored, shamed, or inaccurately portrayed by other media is much more important to us. it’s very appropriate that the example sentence for the definition of nonbinary is “nonbinary people are vastly underrepresented in the media” because it’s true.

list how many nonbinary characters you know off the top of your head. now list how many characters you know that aren’t nonbinary. the lack of representation we get is astronomical.

it’s undeniable that these characters are canonically nonbinary. however, it appears that some people are holding on to the idea that they’re not. i’ve seen many, many excuses for why people can’t possibly see them as their canon gender or use their canon pronouns.

the thing is.

these excuses are often very poorly thought out. and they tend to disrespect the source material. so, if you’re going to come up with an excuse to misgender these characters, at least do a better job.

here’s all the excuses i’ve seen and why they make no sense.

#1: frisk/chara/kris are the player.

if they were the player they would not have their own names, backstories, personalities, relationship dynamics, motivations, & interests which lay outside the player’s influence. i’m inclined to believe people who claim this probably did not finish these games.

also just because the narrator says “you” does not mean they’re referring to you, the player. i’m guessing people who think this probably haven’t read homestuck and...actually, that’s valid tbh.

#2: frisk/chara/kris are meant to be projected on.

there’s a whole plot twist during the end of this game that these characters are separate from the player. (ie: frisk being revealed to have their own name and be their own person with their own life that flowey begs you to stop interfering with. chara being separate from both frisk and the player, having their own true name, family, backstory, personality, and morals.)

frisk and chara are written to be ambiguous at first, yes, but that’s because toby wants the player to project onto them because it makes the whole plot twist have actual meaning. frisk and chara being separate people and having their own names and backstories wouldn’t have any meaning if they were still supposed to be representations of the player.

this is amazing writing and it would make no sense for their genders to be the one thing that the player somehow still has control over when both undertale and deltarune keep reiterating time and time again that these characters are separate from the player.

#3: toby said frisk/chara/kris’s genders are up for interpretation.

he has never said this.

#4: toby made a tweet that said-

toby’s tweets are not canon.

#5: someone found a deleted tweet where toby called frisk a boy.

it was fake.

#6: frisk/chara/kris are only called they/them because the monsters don’t know their gender.

that’s never stated anywhere.

if monsters didn’t know their gender, toby would have written that into the narrative to show clearly what was going on, and we wouldn’t be having this whole nonbinary debate. but he didn’t. because this excuse doesn’t make sense.

chara & kris had been living with monsters for years. they were family. there’s no way the dreemurrs wouldn’t know what gender their fucking child (sibling & best friend, in asriel’s case) is, especially when they all have genders themselves. especially since, in undertale, the monsters weren’t living under a rock forever. they know what humans are like and have interacted with them before the war. even more so in deltarune, where everybody lives on the surface, so OF COURSE monsters would know what nonbinary is.

just maybe.....the monsters call frisk/chara/kris by they/them pronouns because they go by they/them pronouns

there are several monsters who go by they/them pronouns in the game as well. napstablook, monster kid, and ice wolf are just a few notable examples. the monsters do understand that these characters are nonbinary. i just wish some irl people could too!

#7: they/them is just another way of saying he or she.

usually you only call someone they/them in this way if you don’t know them. all the monsters know frisk/chara/kris. they’re family, class mates, friends, neighbors, etc. they know what gender these characters are and they know what pronouns they use.

there’s also already characters in these games who use multiple pronouns. there’s characters who use both he/him AND she/her pronouns. if frisk/chara/kris was like that then toby could’ve just done that as well. but he didn’t. they only ever uses they/them. it’s not that hard to respect that.

#8: singular they/them is not grammatically correct.

tell that to shakespeare.

#9: they look like [x] gender stereotype.

start applying this logic to real life people and see how quickly you get punched in the face.

#10: they never explicitly state they are nonbinary. the words “i am nonbinary” never come out of their mouth.

alphys never explicitly states she’s a girl. the words “i alphys, the royal scientist, am a girl” never comes out of her mouth. and yet... do people think her gender is up for interpretation? no.

you don’t need someone to hold your hand for you and walk you through this shit.

As Kenny began to walk to the back, bleeding, limping, and all around worse for wear, he suddenly stopped. A microphone had switched on, and he heard the heavy breathing of his opponent could be heard coming loud and clear through the speakers.

"Hey motherfucker...." Effy managed to croak out. "You said you were going to kill Effy.... Guess what... Effy Lived."

The crowd popped for that, and Kenny finally turned around to look at the man he'd just beaten. Sure enough. Effy had even managed to already pull himself up to his knees. "Get your ass back in here. I'm not done with you yet." Effy used the ropes to pull himself back up to his feet, and after a moment of hesitation, Kenny then began to walk back towards the ring. Kenny climbed back into the ring, and immediately put his hands up, ready for a potential round two with Effy... But Effy simple laughed. "I wanna know how that felt." Effy started, and Kenny dropped his hands. "I wanna know what that felt like. You see, when you announce a show like this... Like Effy's Big Gay Blockparty. Certain people start to come in with an expectation. An expectation that the show is going to be soft. That it's going to be this big "celebration" of sorts- and believe me, this is a celebration. But it's not the celebration they expected. There's no hugs here. There's no kisses. I didn't hit you with a riding crop, or shove a dildo down your throat, or whatever the fuck the internet said I was going to do to you, or you were going to do to me... I had to piss you off. Because I wanted you to try and kill me, and because I wanted to try and kill you. Because I need everybody to understand something about gay wrestling, about LGBTQ+ wrestling, and I needed you, Kenny, a man who despite being one of the best fucking wrestlers on the planet, you still get message after message, tweet after tweet, full of thinly veiled homophobia and other bullshit... I needed you to help me show them."

By this point, the locker room began to empty, and many of the wrestlers from earlier in the night began to make their way out to the ring. Syn, Kris Wolfe, MV Young, Jody, O'Shay Edwards, Parrow, VENY, Riley, Violet, Matsumoto, Sonya Deville, Sardonyx, Max, Lacey, Kamiyu, Edith Surreal, AC Mack, Ziggy Haim, and even Jay White came out to join the frey. Effy at this point had turned his attention away from Kenny, and looked directly into the hard cam. "I needed the Second Gear Crew and four of the baddest motherfuckers I could find to kill each other to help me show them. I needed Parrow to rip a man limb from limb to show them, I needed VENY and Riley to have one of the best god damn professional wrestling matches I've ever seen, to show them that just because you can slap a label on us, or because we attach a label to ourselves, doesn't mean you can ignore us, and it doesn't mean we're going to come out here and have a homoerotic little spectacle, to give you something to laugh at. Nobody in this ring is a god damn comedy wrestler, or a sideshow act, these are the toughest Men, Women, and Non-Binary Wrestlers in the god damn world, and June was Pride month, July, July is Gay Wrath month, and I want to make something abundantly clear, and I needed this show, and everybody on it, to help me send the message." Effy wrapped an arm around Syn, and an arm around Riley, and pulled them in close, as Effy leaned against the ropes to deliver his final message. "We're here. We're Queer. And if you think you're going to get away with disrespecting us, or misgendering us, or any other bullshit homophobia or transphobia, the ring right now is full of people who will drag you out into the parking lot, in any god damn city in the world, and beat you to death. And don't you fucking forget it." Effy tossed the microphone and laughed as his music began to play us out tonight.
