Yoko Tsuno and the Pentel P205
Yoko Tsuno and the Pentel P205
2022 saw the release of the 30th Yoko Tsuno album. In case you are not familiar with this series ((I came across this series a few years ago for the first time.)): In the Yoko Tsuno comics the main character, an electrical engineer, is taking part in adventures all over the world. Stories are usually technology and Sci-Fi heavy. Beginning of “On the Edge of Life” from 1977. The first story…

Huge mechanical pencil fan please tell us more (i don’t draw i just fucking love them)
Hello, thank you for your message! To love mechanical pencils is a great thing. ☺️
To get things started, I gathered up as many mechanical pencils (and mechanical erasers) as I could find and have used in the past year.
I absolutely love mechanical pencils because they’re so convenient, durable, reusable, reliable, versatile, and what I learned from using regular pencils in art especially can most certainly be replicated without worrying about many other drawbacks.
This will be a super long post so please bear with me!
Tumblr media
This is a set of Pentel GraphGear 1000 pencils (my favorites) which includes one of each of 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm, and 0.9mm. The 0.4mm was a separate purchase. It comes with four boxes of Pentel HB Super lead for each size and a tube of replacement erasers for this line and many other compatible pencils.
The Pentel GraphGear 1000 series are my favorites because of their rigid design and retractable point that keeps the lead steady and prevents accidents from pokes to drops. The clip is sturdy and acts as a button to retract the point. You can also twist the barrel and always know what lead hardness you’re using whether it’s 2B, B, HB or H. These are amazing to use on good, lightly textured paper.
Tumblr media
The leads shown are the Uni Kuru Toga HB 0.5mm, and Pentel Ain Stein in HB 0.2mm, 0.3mm, 0.4mm and one 2B 0.3mm.
The KuruToga lead is made with the KuruToga technology in mind with a softer outer layer and a harder inner layer to maintain a more consistent thickness through the pencil’s turning mechanism.
Pentel Ain Stein leads are made specifically to write smoother than standard leads by default though they also have varying degrees of hardness/softness. These are my usual lately.
Tumblr media
Uni KuruToga, 0.3mm and 0.5mm (standard)
The mechanism in the Uni KuruToga is made to rotate minutely when the lead hits the surface in order to promote a more consistent line. It may be more suitable for writing but I find it helpful for quick drawings when I don’t need to swap out a different size for a certain effect.
Tumblr media
Pentel Orenz, 0.2mm and 0.3mm
The Pentel Orenz is meant to help with preventing lead breakage with its own gradually retractable tube (also likely better suited for writing). The lead is meant to sit mostly inside for it to prove effective. When drawing, I tend to ignore this function depending on what I’m doing (it holds up quite well if I’m careful). Plus, it’s the only mechanical pencil I’ve found commercially and affordably that used 0.2mm, the smallest commercially available lead I could find. It’s wonderful for minute details in pencil.
Tumblr media
Pilot AirBlanc in 0.3mm
The Pilot AirBlanc have proven indispensable in some of my language study classes years ago where smaller lines made the characters easier to write and more legible for me. The pink one was a gift from a class and I bought a second one in blue. The pencil is quite soft and comfortable and it’s quite fun to use.
Tumblr media
Pentel P200 series pencils in 0.5mm (two have blue and red Pentel Super 0.5mm lead respectively) and one in 0.7mm
The Pentel P200 series have been super reliable for me over the years. I’d keep them so long until the metal part lost its sheen but they were still plenty functional for years and harsh usage. (More than once did a single P205 last me for art classes over the years including drawing as large as 18x24in).
It’s a great sleek, versatile and durable option that’s relatively cheap and easy to find in most stationery sections and art stores, sometimes with additional leads and erasers. The 0.5mm was my favorite size for a long time because it’s thin enough for fine detailing in my drawing but also a comfortable size for writing finely.
Tumblr media
GraphGear 500 series in 0.9mm and 0.3mm
A more heavyweight drafting option, the GraphGear 500 is more clunky and less stylish than its successor. They do their job well for writing and drawing but the grip is not very comfortable for long periods of use but it does prevent slipping. The metal tip does not retract like the 1000 series unfortunately.
Tumblr media
The mechanical erasers I use are from the Tombow Mono line a 2.5x5mm, a 2.3mm and a 3.8mm. They are excellent for erasing small to fine marks and are decently durable and smooth (though a previous 3.8mm one split in half and shattered after continuous wear).
Tumblr media
A “how it’s started vs. how it’s going” model comparison since I began working with and completely adapting to mechanical pencils for writing and drawing.
I hope this was informative! I couldn’t help myself!
(Fun fact: my schooling was weird in my early years and we weren’t always allowed to get up to sharpen pencils even through middle school so mechanical pencils sort of helped to bandage the problem hence my long term obsession)

The Sakura Retrico Ballpoint
Somebody told me that you had a ballpoint, that looked like a pencil, that I had in February of last year. It’s not confidential, it’s got potential, a-rushin’ in rushin’ arooOuund. For real though, the Sakura Retrico Ballpoint looks a lot like a Pentel P205 mechanical pencil. They both have similarly geometrically ribbed grip sections, and they both have similarly tactile click mechanisms. The…

Bunny Girl Sketch
Tumblr media
Made with a pentel P205 and Kuretake ZIG REAL COLOR (warm grey 6 pack)
I've been obsessed with using the ZIG brush pens (♡‿♡) They add an immediate depth in my drawings and it's so quick to draw with. Also great at layering! I think you can see the layers best in the hair 💁‍♀️
+the P205 has a really good weight to it for a mechanical pencil. I enjoy them a little heavier ᕙ(ಠ ਊ ಠ)ᕗ

Navied Mahdavian.
Bio: I am Miami-born (my apologies in advance), streets of hard knocks-schooled (well, suburbs outside San Francisco), currently living in Salt Lake City by way of rural Idaho, with my eyes firmly set on NYC, if only to avoid people's surprise that I don't, in fact, already live in NYC. I've been a cartoonist for The New Yorker since February 2018. My work has also appeared in Wired, Alta Online, Private Eye, Reader's Digest and wherever else I can convince to publish my cartoons. I'm currently writing my debut graphic novel entitled, This Country, about my three years in middle-of-nowhere Idaho (details/news forthcoming!). Before becoming a cartoonist, I taught the 5th grade, where I learned most of my jokes.
Tumblr media
Find this print here! Tools of Choice: I'm what you might call a tools-of-the-trade-idiot. When other cartoonists talk shop about what they use, I usually just nod my head and think about important things like why the word "vacuum" has two u's in it. I do, however, have a tool box of trusty tools I have learned to use over the past few years. I draw with a Pentel P205 .5mm mechanical pencil. When I first started out, I used pencils with letters like H and B in their titles, but I could never get the fine lines I was looking for (and plus, I had to sharpen them, which is a whole thing). For inking lines, I typically use Microns. For a while, I exclusively used the .005 but as my confidence in my drawing has increased, so has the size of my pen tips. In order to get dynamic line variation, I sometimes press down harder than I should, which destroys my poor microns. For washes, I use Bombay Black India ink diluted in water and Winsor and Newton brushes. For a long time, I just used the size 1 brush (you can see a pattern here), but now I use the size 3 (*gasp*). I recently discovered a W&N round 1 brush which has completely changed my ink washes. It allows me to do really delicate and tiny ink washes.

My desk after the Tuesday submission deadline
Tools I wish I could use better: Everything that I currently don't know how to use or even know exists (to misquote Donald Rumsfield, "There are known unknown drawing tools.")! Things I know exist and hear about all the time but have no idea how to use are: non-photo blue pencil, Procreate, watercolor, oil paint, nib pens, brush pens, correction pens, and those gel pens the girls were into when I was in middle school.
Also what is a slide rule?
Tools I wish existed: A pen that could draw correct perspective on its own. Having never studied drawing formally, I sometimes struggle with perspective. In a review of my dancing robots cartoon, the now defunct website Cartoon Companion said the composition and perspective were "contrived" (they also said my first cartoon was "D.O.A." but who remembers these things?).
Tricks: I draw directly onto the finish paper I use (I use Arches 140lb Hot Press paper). I used to draw rough drafts on printer paper and then trace it for my finishes, but I read an interview with Carolita Johnson where she said that she chucked this stage at some point which made the whole process so much faster. I also shamelessly reuse elements from my old rejected cartoons. I have an Artograph LightTracer light box and constantly trace my old cartoons (it works great, but it's chunky and looks like a children's toy. Point of fact, I actually stole it from my old classroom).
Misc: I balance drawing cartoons that I think the New Yorker would go for with cartoons that I know they would never buy. Which isn't to say that I don't submit those cartoons to them, because I definitely do, but it means I have drawn (and submitted) way too many cartoons with animals in bed (my apologies to Emma Allen). Part of me hopes they'll buy one (they won't), but they make me laugh.

On the side note: my coworkers seem to really appreciate me as their supervisor(?) Everyone heard of my broken mechanical pencil and now I have the whole collection of Pentel Sharp P205 Boys and Girls. I cried at the office today because of this. It was so sweet of all of them ( i n i ) I didn't expect it at all.
Now I need to name them all.

oh, nice!! I’ve actually never used colored pencil lead before, not sure why. Seems like something I’d really dig (strongly considering purple right now). Did you go to a specialty stationery store or a generic office supply store?

Here is an update to my newest portrait, “Emily I” 11 x 14 pencil on Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper. For pencils, I’m using Pentel P205 mechanical pencils with 4H, 2H, H, B, 2B, and 4B leads. I’m also using Derwent Graphic pencils, 4H, 2H, H, B, 2B, 4B, and 6B. For tone and texture, I’m using a circumcise type technique by making tiny overlapping circular motions with my pencil which also makes a smoother blend. More to come soon! https://www.instagram.com/p/BwooqcWg5K9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1sgkv9ojd7814

Day 15 | Universi-tea’s Back to School Challenge Supplies + Reviews
Midliners not gonna lie, I got these because of the whole hype on here for them, and I haven’t been disappointed. I’ve never liked the colours of standard highlighters (they burn my eyes) and these are a neat alternative. I love having both the chisel tip and a regular felt pen too.
Wilko Gel Pens These cost me like £1.50 and they’re surprisingly good! I got them for doing diagrams in different colors and honestly they’re perfect for it. Only complaint is the silver looks really pale irl
Pilot v-pens I got three purple and three green for Christmas last year and they’re still going strong. I use them every day in my journal too. They’re not too cheap at like £3 a pen, and a couple look like they’re leaking on the inside??
Pentel p205 0.5mm I’ve had this mechanical pencil for like 4 years now I think? I mean obviously I’ve needed to buy some replacement leads for it over the years but it’s still working great- though the eraser has worn away and idk if I can replace that as easily
Uniball eye micro I have like a dozen of these, they’re my go to pen for note taking. I haven’t used them too much but there’s no real issues so far- the ink dries fast and it doesn’t skip, but my letters get a tad feathery around the edges on thinner paper.
Parker Vector my fountain pen!! only cost like £10 of amazon and I love it. I’d prefer black ink than the blue it came with, so will get black cartridges when it runs out. It’s smooth af and looks real classy, but for some reason it doesn’t mix with my mildliners very well?? idk if the fault is with the mildliners or the Parker or if it’s just a bad combo but when they’re together the highlighted words fade quite a bit

As evident from the small number of mechanical pencils in my stationery stash (they all manage to fit onto a single A5 page!), it is clear I am no huge fan of theirs, preferring to stick to woodcased pencils for its simplicity. However, I have grown to be curious about this category of pencils. Which goes to explain a growing collection.
