Finding Penny

Part of the story: Tender Ministrations in Thailand: Shep has managed to find trouble on his honeymoon in Thailand. Can Simon and Baz save the day? (Can they survive the flight over?)

In this extract, they've finally made it to Penny's remote resort in Chiang Rai. It’s nighttime and up in the hills away from the city.

Baz POV

The 4x4 finally stops at the top of a dirt road. Fairy lights illuminate an area filled with chairs and tables. Bunce comes running over, tears spilling down her cheeks. Her hair is all over the place as if she has been pulling it out. It’s unimaginable that she was a beautiful bride only a week ago. Simon has caught hold of her, pulling her into a tight hug. She seems oblivious to how bad he smells after our journey. How bad we both smell. She’s clinging to him with a  desperation I’ve not seen from her before.  For once it’s Simon who has all the right words, “Penn, Penn, it’s alright. We’re here now. It will be OK. We’re here for you.” I put my arms around them both but I can't bring myself to reassure her of anything. I look over their shoulders and see. . . nothing. Total darkness beyond the hill we’re standing on.

i wanted to let you know that your photos of poconos resorts have helped me with studying honeymoon resorts!!! i wanted to thank you for the photos as well as ask if you potentially have more borscht belt/catskill resort photos? also while i'm at it, what building has resonated the most with you?

Glad to have helped! At this time in terms of Catskill resorts I only ever made the one trip, got a lot of good pictures in Homowack before it burned down and got a precious few pictures at Nevele before getting scared off. There may be a few pictures I opted not to post from Homowack, but most of it is published here already. The abandoned building that resonated the most with me would definitely be at Penn Hills, the whole complex honestly. Passed it by chance way back in 2015, didn't come back to explore it for years after that but what a treat it was. Carpeted walls & ceilings, mirrored everything, heavily angular 70s architecture. It had already had multiple major fires by then & I never got to explore the whole place, but what I did see was a real experience, and to think it was still open and looked like that as recently as 2009...

hi!! tysm for the ask! ☁ - What inspired you to start writing your WIP? (or in general) Probably what inspired me the most is this amazing documentarian named Dan Bell (check him out on YouTube) and his video covering the now-abandoned Penn Hills Resort. I was struck by inspiration to make a series revolving an old swingers hotel in the history rich, yet sadly forgotten, mountainous region of Western Pennsylvania. also, camp camp. you'll notice a lot of my characters have... similar archetypes, lol.

🌙 - What's the most common / reoccurring theme of your WIP(s)?

Heart Hollow, as a whole, is about finding what you've been yearning for. it could mean the vulnerability of being with another person, a welcoming place to call home, the safety of a tight knit community... its a story for anyone who has ever felt lost or unwelcome in their current life; for anyone who thinks they're too broken to love.

This print was inspired by Penn Hills Resort; one of the honeymoon resorts in the Poconos that are closed down and now in ruin/ mostly forgotten. I love the cheesy and tacky decor of these places and how spooky they are when abandoned. While looking at old photos, I tried to capture the complexity of this setting; a place designed for the cultivation and the destruction of intimacy. If walls could talk, right?

She is a mermaid because society tends to treat women as though they are mystical or beautiful but not human. The heart shaped tub is her "ocean" because she is severely limited by her circumstances, but it's pretty so she should be happy. She is looking at herself in the mirror and sees herself, but her many other reflections are revealed and on display unbeknownst to her.

Abandoned Penn Hills Resort

was driving around with Derek and we went past the old Penn Hills resort that they burned to the ground and he told me when he was a kid and homeless all they'd do for fun was go walk around the abandoned ruins, just like when i was a kid and dirt poor and all we'd do was go to the old foxmore village before they burned that to the ground too. goddamn it they took everything from us i hate the poconos

❤️ The now abandoned Penn Hills Resort looked like an absolutely beautiful honeymoon destination with it’s iconic heart shaped hot tubs and wedding bell shaped pool. Wish I could’ve been there in its heyday. ❤️

Penn Hills Resort in Analomink, PA

Penn Hills Resort has burned down yet again, this time affecting the building from the first picture. I'm not sure what purpose this building served. Pictures 2 & 3 show it in flames, and picture 4 shows the aftermath. This comes less than a year after the last major fire brought down the former resort's gymnasium / ice skating rink. Local authorities say they now have court permission to go in and demolish the rest of the buildings on the site - but they've been talking about that for years now.
