heyy! just wanted to lyk that it's so cool you're an OT. my sister is too, and she's in the middle of transferring to her third placement! (still a master's student :>) any words of advice?
nonnie, my love so sweet, thank you this means a lot to me (ꈍᴗꈍ)♡
but wait, your sister is taking her masters in OT? omg that's cooler and really inspiring ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´- since i'm still contemplating if i should take up masters in OT too.
your sister will be more than ready to start working in the field of OT, i'm sure of it! i just want to warn her that OT internship and working as a professional OT are different worlds and sometimes imposter syndrome can get to you, but seeing the slow and small progress of the kids are so rewarding.
oh oh!! and she can always rely on her colleagues for some ideas if she's unsure on what to do ー having people to talk to or bounce ideas off of are a huge help! and asking about how they handle certain situations also help me realize a lot since this (and lots more of other) field needs continuous learning and growth which can be tiring but also really fun since you get to try out a lot of stuff!

What is Co-Regulation? Teachers, caregivers, therapists and medical professionals use this technique with infants, toddlers, children and young adults! It is a way for children to develop the ability to manage their emotions and self-regulate after distress. You can start co-regulation with infants at the beginning of life through connection with nurturing and reliable primary caregivers. Co-regulation involves various types of responses, such as a warm, calming presence and tone of voice, verbal acknowledgement of distress, modeling behaviors that can help regulate their energy levels, and providing a structured environment that supports emotional and physical safety. The caregivers and professionals that utilize Co-Regulation methods pay close attention to the shifting emotional and physiological cues of children, while also regulating their own emotional state.  When the adult is able to provide supportive, consistent responses in the midst of tantrums, behaviors or high energy levels, children develop a growing capacity for self-regulation. Check out our apparel collections for fun designs about sensory and emotional regulation and our website has more education/resources for these hot topics!

Her name is Sarah : Part 2 (Bucky Barnes)
Pairings : Bucky Barnes x original female character
Warnings : Past rape, protagonist was sexual abuse victim, past abuse, scars, blood .
Summary : Who could say that a normal night walk would change Bucky Barnes life forever, when he finds a distressed woman with blood stained clothes seated next to a New York’s street dust bin , holding her naked newborn baby in her arms staring at the blue eyed man with her vulnareble hazel eyes.
Part 2  ( part 1)
Medical professionals were coming in and out of the unit catching his attention from time to time lifting his head up from his entwined hands while he was seated on one of the seats in the waiting room of the emergency ward.
Hours passed by, and finally Bucky's body was lifted up by the gravity’s force only when he saw the woman's four wheeled bed being carried out of the emergency ward, surrounded by many highly focused medical professionals .
Luckily, one of the doctors recognized the brunet as Steve's friend and hurriedly approached him, letting the rest of the staff take the wounded to the OT.
“Sergeant Barnes?” The doctor spoke, visibly shaken.
“ Doctor, how is she? What happened to her? I had tried asking the nurses but they wouldn't tell me anything... Why are you taking so long? And where are you taking her?” Bucky asked the lady doctor, ignoring the surprise he felt knowing that he was recognized by this woman with his name, but whose name he was unaware of as she was one of Steve's acquaintances, not really his.
“In front of a street’s dustbin” He answered, adamantly getting serious in a matter of a split second.
“She has been raped” The doctor declared, clearly with her voice being broken in agony, “brutally… hours after she delivered her son . She had woken up an hour ago and I wanted to check her… but she won't let me... she was getting utterly agitated ... so we had to make her unconscious in order to examine her. Bucky, she is in extreme pain, she has lost plenty of blood and is still bleeding… She's traumatized and we are trying our best to save her. I have called a very dear friend of mine, Dr Neil Gonzalez. He is the best gynecologist in town and he will join me to handle this case. We are still examining her” The doctor finished explaining only because she could speak no more… as she had much more to say but the pain had blocked her vocal cords from making any sound after a point.
The doctor’s words had hit Bucky in the chest like rocks making him flinch in disgust thinking of the monstrous being capable enough to sexually abuse a woman right after her giving birth.
“ And what about the baby? How is he?” Bucky managed to ask, after struggling to break his trance.
“ I don't know... I haven't seen him yet... that's not my department. Another detail I noticed is that this seems to be a case of an at home birth in a very weird way… nothing is done properly… in fact... I think… I believe…” the doctor replied, and wanted to tell the worried man her most terrifying doubt, but a colleague demanded her attention, making her leave the Winter soldier standing there really baffled and dumbstruck, not before double eyeing the brunettes traumatized expression shadowing his gorgeous face... as if she found the woman’s suffering reflected in his light blue orbs very intimately... Even though Bucky didn't know the woman's name,he still was able to feel her pain.
Realizing that the doctor had left him, Bucky immediately ran to the information counter and crashed both his hands on the furniture, bringing his face closer to the administrator.
“ Can you tell me where's the baby, madam?” Bucky asked nervously.
“ Which baby sir?” The woman on the counter asked the brunette back.
“The one that was brought some hours ago… with a woman who was taken to the emergency ward… both of them came in the ambulance with me,” Bucky explained, trying to make a point.
“Oh… I see... he is being monitored in the pediatric unit number 10, in the NICU, taking the first left from there”
“Thanks”
The Winter soldier almost teleported his body to said ward, but his feet froze even before he reached the glass door as his eyes fell on the baby. The tiny creature was left all alone being monitored with all the patches and wires on him. Not to mention, the thick white tube that was inside of his diminutive mouth. At first, the baby seemed unconscious to him. But when he looked closely, aiming his eyesight on the baby's naked chest, which was gently being lifted up and down following the laws of the breathing process, he was thankfully proven wrong. Nonetheless, nothing could lessen the pain he felt watching this little child so vulnerable, surrounded by all the heavy medical equipment. That too without his mother.
A white robed man joined Bucky seconds after he had arrived, staying silent for a couple of companionable minutes until he decided to finally share some information about his recent case.
“He is a premature baby and his situation is very... very delicate…” the pediatrician stated, crossing his arms in front of his chest and looking at the blue-eyed man, whose attention he grabbed the second he made a sound.
“What do you mean? Will he survive?” Bucky asked, completely shocked.
“We are trying our best… you... are the father of…?”
“No… no... I just found them on the street...I mean he and his mother '' Bucky responded, a heavy seriousness clouding on his serene countenance, “please... Please tell me that he will live... he will survive... he's too small to die …too innocent”
“We are doing everything possible that's in our hands to save him. But he's very weak... very thin... as if he wasn't being fed well inside of her mother's bag...she wasn't eating well and that's why her son is so malnourished… but don't worry fella.. I'll be joined within 10 minutes with my seniors. I hope to give you some good news soon” He declared, giving the sinking man some hope to live on, before he left for the meeting.
At that moment, the former assassin's phone started buzzing. Perks of being in avenger. He was needed urgently, even though he did not want to go he left the hospital with a heavy heart only to attend his duties. Because God knows, and he knew very well that his head was elsewhere.
The image of the woman with the brightest amber eyes he had ever seen in his life was occupying his thoughts. Worried… chewing his own skin he was, until he got a message after a day that both the baby and his mother were out of danger. He sighed a heavy burden of worry out of his lungs seated all alone in the Tower’s main conference room. Now only one thing was left to do ... Take some time out from his tight schedule in order to pay the lady a visit in the hospital.
Even though he was dog tired, after 3 days he decided to go to the place where he had lost a part of his soul to see if he could get it back.
“… Excuse me … the lady in this room ... where is she?” The metal armed man asked one of the nurses who was passing by in the hallway, finding the woman's bed empty. “Which lady?” The nurse asked,
“Oh... I'm sorry... three days ago… I brought a woman with a newborn baby to this hospital at night…”
“Okay, that woman?” She's been out of the emergency unit since the past 48 hours, sir.
“And… where is she now?”
“Wait a second sir, I'll check and let you know in a minute” The nurse stated, before leaving Bucky alone at the entrance of the emergency ward.
“Sergeant Barnes” A familiar voice steadied the brunette’s wandering light blue orbs.
“ Doctor” Bucky muttered in response, seeing the professional who had first informed him about the woman's condition walking over to him.
The doctor had now reached Bucky and stopped a foot away from the tall and handsome man, wearing a delicate smile on her countenance.
“She has been transferred to room 109” She declared,
“ How is she?” Bucky asked , unable to contain his curiosity any longer.
“Want to meet her?”
Bucky took a couple of seconds to think before nodding shyly after lowering his orbs, provoking a wide grin to decorate the lady doctor's face.
“Come with me”
And he followed the gynecologist like an anxious, newly adopted puppy. Nonetheless, Bucky couldn't keep his God-given large mouth shut.
“So… did she speak anything about her situation or her family background? How did she end up there … on the street?” He asked, matching his steps to his companion.
“I'm afraid to say no... she didn't say a word. We have tried asking her multiple questions but she won't tell us anything... not even her name, age, where she lives... nothing” The doctor replied hopelessly and stopped, forcing Bucky to come to a halt as well. “You know Bucky, maybe... she truly doesn't know her identity or who she is , where she comes from. Because…She didn't even know how to sign a paper. Her eyes were so… lost” The doctor spoke and stopped only when she saw the man in front of her getting exceedingly puzzled.
“We have reached her room” She declared and opened the door 109, letting Bucky pass first.

Midterm Reflections: SDG guide to make an impact in the community
It's 2015, and the United Nations has just called a universal call to action to end poverty and inequality, protect the planet, and ensure all people enjoy health, justice, and peace. Who will respond to this call? (WHO)
WELCOME BACK TO BLOG 3, WEEK 3
Can you believe it's already midterms? That means we're halfway through the block, and by now, I have begun to understand the multi-dimensional layer it takes to be a community OT. As I grow fonder of the community, I keep asking myself how can I make a significant impact with the little time I have left. The task sometimes seems almost impossible and overwhelming, as there’s so much to do and so much more that can be done… This blog will highlight the work I intend to do in the community using the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG) as a guide.
Before I begin, let me briefly inform you about the SDG- In 2015, the United Nations came together to create a plan for a better future called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It comprises of 17 goals to make the world fairer, safer, and more prosperous by 2030 (UN). The SDGs build on the progress made by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), launched in 2000. The MDGs made a big difference in reducing poverty, improving healthcare, and promoting education globally, with the exception of developing sub-Saharan Africa, leaving millions of people still lagging behind. This is why an urgent global call to action was required…
Tumblr media
The SDGs are a call upon governments, businesses, and individuals to work together to ensure quality education and healthcare and promote peace and justice, among many other goals, as explained in the link below:
This one is related to South Africa and is more relevant to us.
Tumblr media
So, what are we, as community OTs, doing to work towards these goals?
In my last blog, I mentioned how my mornings occur at the New Clinic where we do health promotion. Here, we inform the patients about OT, screen for possible clients, and educate and rehabilitate those in need. We see a variety of cases from psychological, physical, and pediatrics, such as mums with postpartum depression, workers with low back pain, elderly people with arthritis, and kids with developmental delays. This aligns with SDG 3, “Good Health and Wellbeing’’, in which we aim to promote physical and mental health and well-being for all ages. This goal concerns maternal and child health; you can read more about that in my first blog! We also run an active aging group for elderly ladies to promote healthy aging, prevent age-related diseases, and encourage social participation.
The next goal we intend to work towards is SDG 4: “Quality Education.” This goal aims to ensure all learners have access to ECD centers such as creches (4.2) to prepare them for primary school. In Kenville, there are many creches, but the kids are often under-stimulated and do nothing all day. As OTs at the creches, our role is to stimulate and bridge that gap to prepare the kids for primary school. We do this by using play, building cost-effective and stimulating toys, and upskilling teachers to support the learners better. The goal also aims to improve youth literacy and numeracy skills (4,6). At the Kenville primary school, we see many learners unable to read, write, and count. As OTs, we can use alternative and fun learning methods to help learners meet their grade requirements and write legibly.
Moreover, we try to promote SDG8, “Decent Work and Economic Growth.” With our individual clients, we provide vocational rehab for those who are struggling to work due to an illness or injury such as pain, edema, or a hand injury. At the New Clinic, we run a project called KITE, which employs a local community member to work to sell donated clothes to earn an income. We have also been trying to run a job skills program to upskill community members and teach them financial literacy skills. We also aim to tackle youth unemployment by running a study skills group and career guidance for high school learners to educate them about careers and colleges, to improve their marks, and to be able to meet university requirements.
Another goal we intend to work towards is SDG10: “reduced inequalities.” At Kenville, we see income and social inequalities such as poverty, gender-based violence, xenophobia, and the effects of patriarchy on women. This perpetuates a cycle of poverty and marginalization. As OTs, we try to reduce inequalities by focusing on advocacy, education, and social inclusion. At the high school, we discuss pressing issues such as bullying, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy to help combat these issues. We also run expressive groups for the youth to provide a safe space for the kids and to promote self-esteem and a sense of equality within the community. This links with the last goal as well…
Lastly, we aim to work towards SDG11, “Sustainable Cities and Communities”. This goal aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Kenville has a lot of litter and pollution; we can try to start community clean-up initiatives and environmental education programs; this can be done with the youth soccer kids as they are the ones playing on the fields. We can collaborate with local organizations and businesses to make community resources more sustainable and safer. Our goal for this block is to get a shipping container to work from and improve the youth soccer field (i.e., build goals and clean space). We also need to ensure our programs implemented are sustainable and continue even without us present through caregiver/ teacher/social worker education or, better yet, advocate for an OT post within the community. As OTs, we can also make and provide assistive devices and adapt the home environment to make it more inclusive and safe for people with disabilities.
As you can see, OTs have an active role within communities in helping meet sustainable developmental goals. For the last 3 weeks, we have ''unconsciously'' been working hard, in accordance with the SDG, to help create communal change, promote health, reduce inequalities, provide quality education and work opportunities, and achieve a sustainable and safe community.  By focusing on these five SDGs, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change within our community. It's important to note that each goal has many sub-goals; we, as OTs, work within our capacity to meet these goals as much as possible, despite the various barriers - such as corruption, poor service delivery, discrimination and occupational ennui of clients- yet our impact is still significant. Considering we have 5 years until our goals should be met, there is so much to do, indicating the need for more/permanent OT services at the community level. Seeing the importance of the SDG to promote health, justice, and peace, as well as the link between the SDG and our OT role, I ask you, have you responded to the UN's call as a future or graduate OT?
Until the next blog
Peace ✌️

No water? No electricity? No basic resources? No food? How do we function in our everyday lives if these are constant challenges that these people face in their everyday life.
With UKZN being one of the 7 schools in South Africa that offer the Occupational Therapy degree to students, it is essential that they have an effective and robust curriculum which ensures that they are able to produce the most knowledgeable and of quality students to practice and make a better difference in the world.
Now, I know, UKZN does not have the best reputation when it comes to universities in South Africa, particularly because of the strikes occurring almost every year, and sometimes even more than once a year. Despite these issues of striking and our buildings being lit alite, it affects merely a week or so of learning and then we are back on track, but more importantly, somehow, the Occupational Therapy department manage to figure out ways of ensuring that their students are on par during these times whether it be through a zoom lesson, doing a tut followed by work or even just being given work to do at home so that we are never left idle, and the reason I know all of this is from experience!
UKZN’s OT curriculum ensures that it covers all aspects where theoretical knowledge and practical skills are combined through theory lectures and hands on practicals which offer each student the ability to not only be taught words and facts off a powerpoint but also allows the student to physically do certain aspects of therapy on their classmates so that they have somewhat of a feel of what to do when facing real cases in the outside world. One of my favorites being the NDT pracs which were done at the beginning of third year and I must say, are very hands on and therefore allowed us to get a feel of how to carry out these skills once we start practicing, and the best part is that we are monitored by our lecturers who ensure that each of us know exactly what we are doing. The different areas of practice that we are doing this year include community based practice, physical patients, psych as well as pediatrics. This is highly beneficial as it equips all of its students to face challenges that they may experience when practicing as a professional. With this being said, there are many pros and cons that come along with it which in ways will either positively or negatively impact the students.
Since two weeks ago, we have ventured into our second block being community. The location that I am placed at is about 30 minutes from campus. At the beginning of the year, we were given 3-5 days where we only covered community based work and were prepped on what to expect on our community block. After having those lectures, I had become intrigued and quite excited for this new venture and to make a difference in such low resourced communities. After setting out on this venture and physically being in the community that we discussed at the beginning of the year, I have come to realize that my experience is nowhere near what I had thought it would be. Despite being told that it would be so much different to what we’ve been working with for the last 2 years, once you actually are experiencing it, it’s a huge difference.
So what are some of the pros in terms of preparing for community based practice. Well, at the beginning of the year we met with lecturers to discuss what to expect and how to go about working in the community and this was highly beneficial to us. To me, it felt like it gave us a portion of an idea of what we would see because I don’t think anything can prepare you for working in the community until you are physically there. From working in such resourced hospitals and then transitioning to the community it really is a big jump and takes a lot of adjusting before getting used to it. What else has been helpful in preparing for the community is extra resources on learn such as articles we are beneficial to read and learn more about the community. Something I read about was Community Based Rehabilitation which was initially designed to meet the needs of people living in rural areas. This approach includes community involvement and also looks at building on the resources of that community (Lundgren-Lindquist and Nordholm, 1993; Malafatopoulos, 1986).
Similarly, in the preparation process for the community block there are cons that we are faced with. Personally, I think that the biggest challenge has to be that from second year till block 1 of 4th year, we are sent to facilities such as TAFTA, King Edward, Madadeni, Grey’s etc and these hospital / facilities are the complete opposite to what we are experiencing now. These hospitals are well equipped all with their own OT departments as well as equipment to use such as plinths, exercise balls, splinting pans and the list goes on. The challenge we are now facing is that we have now come into the community who has minimal to no resources and therefore it puts us in a difficult situation because we are so used to having all the necessary equipment for treatment. Although it is challenging it is a good learning curve.
Overall we may come to the conclusion that UKZN’s OT curriculum is comprehensive in the sense that they are focussed on upskilling their students with theory and practical based knowledge which enables them to become competent and confident in their practice, focussed on making a difference and making meaningful contributions to society. The pros and cons will forever remain as each and every thing in society has its ups and downs, we as intellectual individuals must find ways to overcome these challenges and use the pros to our advantage.
