lmao who would have thought wwdits of all shows would give us the chance to relive the good old tradition of showrunners claiming their protagonists friendship was too pure too sully with nasty gay sex while simoultaneously making fun of fans for noticing and liking the dynamic that had explicitly and inentionally been written as homoerotically charged after it had proved profitable thank you paul i almost forgot what 2012 tasted like

I see a lot of people saying things like “guys they just can’t confirm nandermo canon, that would be spoilers!!” but I think that is missing the shitty thing about this whole situation.
Nandermo does not have to be end-game at all. They’re will-they-won’t-they, it’s in the name. And that dumb “he’s his boss” comment is funny as shit and insane in many ways, but not my problem.
My problem is the super homophobic notion that them “hooking up” would somehow make their relationship “less pure” (how their relationship could ever be seen as pure in any way is a mystery to me but okay). And while he isn’t explicitly saying it, the implied point is that any romance at all would be ruining a perfectly wholesome relationship, which is a very old homophobic talking point.
Am I the only one seeing this? Am I reading into it too much? I’ve only seen people making (very funny) jokes about this but isn’t it actually pretty fucked up?

Ok I think I've figured out why nandermo is Like That if they aren't planning on making them canon: it's a running gag.
It's the classic "oh haha this relationship has the same tropes as this other relationship! Even though they aren't like that! Isn't that funny?" trope. I don't know if I'm getting this across very well but I've seen stuff like this before, especially in sitcoms and ESPECIALLY between men. It's honestly a very common homophobic trope even when it's not trying to be malicious. It usually comes in the form of male friends being overdramatically jealous of the other's new partner, or otherwise overly comfortable with each other only to hit the audience with the "no homo" puncline.
The problem with nandermo is that those are usually one-off jokes, or if they're repeated they're usually just for one episode. It's also usually between straight men with female partners, just to play up that "they aren't ACTUALLY jealous in a romantic way, it's just a bit!" or whatever. Nandermo is neither. They are both queer, (usually) single men, and the moments between them are EVERYWHERE in the show. It's woven into the fabric of their characters.
So yeah, I think they just committed to the bit too hard and accidentally crafted a beautiful and tragic queer love story when their initial goal was just "what if boss/employee acted like lovers lol". And now they refuse to genuinely explore what they created.

So does anyone remember Laszlo (and Nadja and Nadja doll) fucking Colin Robinson this season? Even though Colin Robinson was effectively Laszlo's son last season?
Paul, do you remember that? Now tell me again why canon Nandermo would be weird?

Checked the WWDITS tag and it seems like Paul Simms graduated from the Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat School of audience callousness.

Vulture held a What We Do in the Shadows panel with the writers as part of Vulture Festival, and I went because @phasmama nudged me.
Random things:
Season 6 will film in January, so the air date will be around the summer.
S6 will address the question of what does Guillermo want now, since S5 ended with him getting what he wanted and realizing he didn't want it after all.
S6 will feature a new kind of hypnotism, which will probably be in an episode co-written by Zach Dunn, or he came up with the idea (going by a teasing jab of Paul Simms').
A plot that was tossed around in the writers' room was about Nadja trying to fit in and joining a human book club and realizing that it was an excuse to drink wine and nobody actually read the book.
Jeremy Levick and Rajat Suresh originally scripted a lot of options for the hybrid creatures. One that was nixed was a curly-haired mouse that originated from Guillermo's pubic hair.
They talked about Nandermo. I've transcribed that specific part here.

Did not have what we do in the shadows no-homoing itself in the year of our lord Twenty FUCKING twenty three on my bingo card but hey, so many writers across so many streaming services really wanted to cement Our Goods Shadows' status as the new Superwholock. Good for them for really living up to their predecessors!

Just thinking if either Nandor or Guillermo would have been a woman, there would have been ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT that the writers would have tried to to put them together at the first opportunity, even if they would go through a breakup during the series. Because it's easy. Because is "normal". Because nobody would have a damn thing to say about it.
But they are two men. Whoops!
Let's put the "friendship bigger than sexual love" card on the table because they are pure and above the mortal comprehension of love. It's true love, don't you see? No need to kiss in the fucking and sucking everyone show! That would be too much! That's his boss!
Cowards.

IDK how people are so surprised that Paul Simms is throwing out flimsy excuses for why Nandermo can’t be canon.
Like do you guys not remember who owns FX and Hulu?
