Legends and myths about trees
Forest spirits and natives (2)
Patupaiarehe – Night spirits of the Maori people of New Zealand. Dwell in the darkness deep in the forest.
Patupaiarehe are legendary humanoid cryptids native to New Zealand that hide in forests and are said to have the power to induce a trance and to lure people away. They are supernatural beings (he iwi atua) in Māori mythology that are described as pale to fair skinned with blonde hair or red hair, usually having the same stature as ordinary people, and never tattooed.
They can draw mist to themselves, but tend to be nocturnal or active on misty or foggy days as direct sunlight can be fatal to them. They prefer raw food and have an aversion to steam and fire.
The music of their kōauau and pūtōrino (small flutes), along with their singing of waiata, which songs are sung solo, in unison, or at the octave, occasionally reveals their presence on foggy days. A kōauau is a small flute, ductless and notchless, four to eight inches (ten to twenty centimetres) long, open at both ends and having from three to six fingerholes placed along the pipe.
They could lure people away from safety with the music of their flutes, and had magical powers and special knowledge. Some believe that red-haired Māori are their descendants. Patupaiarehe sometimes taught people magical chants and other skills. They were good at fishing, and one chief spied on them to learn how to make nets.
Patupaiarehe were seldom seen. They were thought to live in several places in the North Island, including in the Waikato, around Rotorua and in the Urewera mountains. They also lived in some places in the South Island.

For the final day of te wiki o te reo Māori: patupaiarehe! Pale, reclusive supernatural beings who live in the mountains and forests. Here's some art of them from books I've read recently.
Left: Ririō from Te Uruuru Whenua o te Ngātoroirangi, nā Chris Winitana.
Right: Katipō (and Kuratawhiti, and her human love Kāhu!) from Arohanui: Te Utu a Ngāi Parehe.
There's some really cool art of Kuratawhiti especially, but I couldn't find it online. Both these books are just gorgeous though- I fully recommend! I'm not sure about Te Uruuru, but Arohanui is also available in te reo Pākeha. Translated it is called Arohanui: Revenge of the Fey.

Pokemon Challenge 2024! #1066 Turehure.
Turehure is the third of the trio of legendary Te'Roan fairies, along with Patupatu and Pakepake. It is a Fairy/Flying type. The patupaiarehe from Māori mythology have many names, and another is tūrehu (tooo-ray-hoo). They were said to be extremely shy and distrustful of humans, but would occasionally befriend or even marry humans - but if they got spooked or thought their supernatural nature would be exposed, they could fly away on clouds, never to be seen again.
Find the rest of the Te'Roa set in my master post!

Dani,i had a fun idea. A bunch of TMI au's where the origins of the shadow world is not based around angels and demons, but on Mythologies around the world. Here's a few examples: AZTEC MYTHOLOGY: Shadowhunters were created by Quetzcoatl, the God of Protection, they still use runes. But the runes are Aztec Glyohs Warlocks were the children of humans and beings from Mictlan, the underworld, Fae are the mythical creatures of Aztec lore such as the Ahuizotl or the Quinametzin Vampires were created by Camazotz, the bat god. And Werewolves by Xolotl, the Dog of the Underworld. POLYNESIAN MYTHOLOGY Shadowhunters were created by Tane, the God of War. Instead of rune they use Ta Moko, sacred polynesian tattoos Warlocks are the children of Whiro, the god of the depths of the sea who lives deep below Fae are whimsical faerie of Polynesian myth, such as the Patupaiarehe Vampires are the children of Rangi, the Earth God. The Earth always hungers for blood Werewolves are the children of Tu, the War god of the angry face
NICO, YOUR BRAIN OMG. THIS IS SO COOL.
I'm super intrigued by the Polynesian background. It's definitely so much cooler than angels/demons - which is very much biblical.
LOVE THIS.

Aspis didn't know what excuse he gave to Emil and Katarina. Or if he even bothered to say anything. But as soon as the match was settled, he had darted from his seat to find a way down. Throngs of people milled about since the end of a fight also meant time for snacks or relief. Yet Aspis weaved through them as it reminded him of the nights filled with food vendors and street parties.
He looked for the silver hair and bright eyes that seemed to finally clarify for him. Aspis didn't even realize how fuzzy his memory of his godfather was. But seeing him reminded the hunter of the features that stood out. The ones that earned the teasing of being called 'patupaiarehe' or 'fairy.'
Meanwhile Jasper held onto one of the bullets he managed to nick before he had to hand it over to the official. He rubbed part of the coating off. The feeling of the residue was distantly familiar as he recalled loading his own coated bullets into magazines before a mission. He also felt a chill with the calculating gaze of his opponent. It reminded him of some he met in the European branch. It had Bastion written all over it. And it made the man uneasy since even if he wasn't a high priority...a criminal was a criminal for them.
He tensed and nearly swung when a hand reached his shoulder. Jasper recognized him as one of the guys in the tournament, "If you want a fight, save it for the ring will ya?"
"What? No, I don't want a fight," Aspis said. Well, he did but not like this.
"If not then buzz off," Jasper replied, turning to return to the others. With him and Donovan both advancing, they couldn't just drop out. But would he also be able to avoid that hunter that whole time? He seemed intent and if he knew about Jasper...odds were he was dealing with a blackbird. And god, he didn't think he could survive another valravn after him.
"Can we talk somewhere, please?"
"No, thank you."
Fully snubbing the weird combatant, Jasper was set to turn away. The brusqueness of the man was off-putting to Aspis. He almost thought he had it wrong. That he was seeing things. If his memory was failing him. But the prospect of anything from that time ached in his body. It hurt.
Aspis reached out and called, "Uncle Jas, please."
That brought the mercenary to a full stop. He hadn't been called that in a long time. But any pleasantry was derided by a cynicism. He wasn't the only nonhuman in this game. What stopped one from getting into his head before hand? It had to be a trick. It had to. Because he knew that anyone from that time was gone.
"I suggest you use a different tactic or I'll put you in the ground for this one," Jasper snarled, "I won't tolerate speaking ill of the dead."
Dead? He's not--Oh. He'd been so wrapped up in the thought of meeting his godfather, he didn't even think of how strange it must feel to his uncle. Those piercing eyes dared him for his next action. Aspis looked away.
Taking it as defeat, Jasper shrugged off the other and started on his way.
Tumblr media
"You're a fairy not an elf," Aspis finally said, "You lost your wings in a bet with a centaur."
Jasper stopped again. Initially thinking he was insulted but then recalling a sunny day along warm sands. His cargo shorts soaked despite the insistence to not go in the water. The cause of it's head emerging from the waves, chattering without a care.
"And when you found them, you promised that you would take me for ride. I'd be able to see the entire island like the birds did," Aspis recalled as the man turned back to him. He rubbed his arm as he said, "...it's not nice to lie, y'know. A lot of fae don't really have wings. And you seem more like an elf than any fae based off what I've seen. And I...I would've really liked that ride."
The slate of Jasper's brain was wiped clean. His worry of being hunted and his information relay were thrown to the corner. His mind reeled as he thought of it were possible for his entire reason for surviving to just...appear to him like this. Could the world be so kind? So cruel?
He stared, looking at Aspis' frame up and down. The boy he remembered was scarcely eight the last time he'd saw him. So it was hard to imagine him over a decade later. But he thought of the scuffs from exploration and bruises of knobby knees growing to the athletic frame with scars tell tale of a far more reckless spirit. The skin tone like the warm-blessed like the woman that used to bicker with him as she pushed a tray of fruit to him. His hair was very different, much lighter than the dark locks lined with twigs and leaves and yet so familiar. But what brought it to Jasper and what should've made it obvious were the eyes that mirrored sunsets. Eyes like the one he grew up with. The one that was certainly shared by his best friend's children...his godchildren.
Tumblr media
Despite keeping all the names like a mantra in his head, Jasper hadn't spoken them in so long. So the one he spoke came out like a worried murmur, "...Kai...?"
Those eyes seemed to light up at the name. As if they weren't heard for as long as he hadn't spoken them. And there was a smile that cemented this revelation for Jasper, "It's been a wh--oof."
The rest was muffled from the crushing embrace that caught Aspis. It was constricting as if if Jasper let go, this would disappear. Some hallucination of his mind. He also wanted the assurance that this was real. And not a ghost of his past coming to haunt him. The relief, the hope that swelled in him threatened to burst him from the inside.
A tap against his arm asked for breath. Jasper grasped Aspis by the shoulders as he pulled back. He sighed, he really did have both his parents in his looks. But then the items he tossed aside in his fervor started to resurface and bring about their own questions, "What are you doing here? You're not forced here are you? Is someone following you?"
"Uh, no. No. And I'm here with friends," he answered backwards, "What are you doing here? I thought the bet thing was a joke."
"It was. Sorta. It was with a faun and for something completely different."
"A faun? Uncle--" this time Jasper purposely covered his mouth. His senses on alert. This was the greatest news he could get and yet the worst news had preceded it, "I'll tell you all about it. It and everything else you want to know. Just not now. We can meet later--"
To this Aspis escaped his hold, "--Later? You have been gone for almost 15 years and you tell me to meet later? Are you fucking--"
"--language--"
This earned an eye roll as he continued, "--Fucking kidding me? I just found you."
"Yes, you found me in the middle of a tournament with both savory and unsavory types roaming around as spectators and competitors," Jasper pointed out, "Look, I would love to explain it all but I can't. Like you said it's been 15 years and it'll take more than 15 minutes to tell you everything. But I can find you after this."
While the initial buzz of excitement wore off, the words started to give Aspis his own doubts as he recalled the last encounter with his godfather, "What stops you from just running away again?"
Jasper cringed at the words as they struck his heart. But he shook of the wavering in his being as he clasped the other's shoulder, "I give you my word that I will come for you after this. It may be hard to believe but I'm begging you to remember what my words means. What I can say is that I have some people here and now that may have it out for me or my associates. And I don't want them to target you too. So for now, keep this under wraps."
"...I don't know if I believe you," Aspis admitted, "but I'm gonna hold you to it. Or I will find you."
Despite the threat, for the first time this whole conversation did the man resemble the man that Aspis remembered. An amused expression graced Jasper's features.

draft words for forms for exposure
Working in experimental ways within sculpture, installation and painting, my practice is inspired by histories steeped in whakapapa and is an expression of my identity.
While lamenting the serious plight for its survival, my current body of work pays homage to the rich heritage of kauri and its central role in the lives of tupuna gum diggers, unearthing familial narratives of patupaiarehe as well as kauri pūrākau in te ao Māori.
Symptoms of kauri dis-ease can appear at the lower trunk where Profuse gum is expelled or leaves and seeds sprout directly from the trunk

Old info i never posted👀
Many times I show you they often symbolize black/dark people as creatures/monsters in stories/movies.. In this case I'm speaking of the Caipora...It is described as a small dark being often accompanied with a animal.. The mayan vase paintings are just there for reference to show small, dark people did exist in the past which helps draw the connection.. Also used the patupaiarehe example since it's another humanoid creature that i believe is based on a real people... Pacific islanders are known to have natural blonde & red hair also

Some sketches from today. I re-read Chris Winitana's Te Uruuru Whenua o Ngātoroirangi and drew some of my faves.
Tamaohoi looks pretty messed up. I like when he's depicted more humanoid, but I also like the scary lava jaws in this book, so I tried to mix both.

Kind of a Moana oc. I can't believe i haven't seen this movie sooner, because it's awesome! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is Kalea (Meaning "Joy", "Happiness"). She is a Patupaiarehe, a kind of fairy-like creature in the Māori mythology, and lives in Lalotai with the rest of her little tribe, away from sunlight. She likes to scavenge for what she calls "treasures", but can really be any kind of junk she finds interesting. She even bring the shiny stuff to Tamatoa sometimes (they are on pretty good terms). She could be considered a bit weird, or at least eccentric, but is overall friendly, curious and clever. She's a bit smaller than Moana.
