So I was kind of feeling like, "ugh I'm so unfocused, I picked a movie an hour ago and have just been dicking around since then, ugh". However...in a wild attempt to be fair to myself, I did spend most of the day being very focused on my studio work, apart from the intermittent breaks to download *checks notes* 52 movies from my PlayOn account. But that was during my needed walking around for my stupid back and joints breaks, so. I suppose I can excuse some unintentional dicking around time.

Anyway, I actually thought ahead thanks to the whole "one theme week per month" goal, and had a list ready? So this week is Black Cinema!

evolution of starsaints kiddos. first was from around 2021 . i wanted to give them a greater difference in color pallete and shape. my least favourite iteration of them is the 2nd because i can't get over the fact that they literally look identical, my same face syndrome was terminal back then

To be fair, (and this isnt an excuse more an admonishment of the problem) even this official book art is whitewashed

yeah i know, this was years ago but iirc sanderson didnt say anything about kaladin in the wor cover cause he felt embarrassed giving notes to whelan. honestly to me this is indicative of white people (even when writing diverse characters) not understanding the gravity of those choices and who they will affect. i dont think that fantasy as a genre is where representation goes to live or die but frankly it would be nice to see people give a shit. as for the text i honestly cant blame some fanartists for white girl shallan when her physical description carefully skirts around any mention of any racialized features (alethi monolids are conveyed by szeth's eyes being described as big and weird as a contrast to the norm. this isnt effective) however if youre on tumblr you know. like you know. no one has shut up about it, myself included, for years so unless you joined the site literally yesterday you know about shallan. and you can tell when an artist hasnt made the effort.

now i dont think this is a good enough excuse in 2023: the official art has gotten better over the years, especially with those figurines they put out and the row cover, but honestly this whole business has always come with a lack of care from both sanderson and his fans. to me it speaks to the bigger problem of white fantasy authors/fans who can only contextualize oppression when its fictionalized and therefore not that big of a deal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#i know you (anon) personally are not excusing this but with all the new official material out i dont think its a pass anymore #also really incredible as a person of color in this space who has seen like 90% of black and brown stormlight fans fully #leave the fandom by 2021. like i can stick it out cause i dont put faith or stock in this shit and i no longer engage w/ anyone i dont know #but it was genuinely hard out here #asks #cosmere
