Seat of the Writing Man
Parts Found in Sea
1984, Between
Named for a headline describing an airplane that crashed into the ocean, Parts Found in Sea were a mellow post-punk/college rock band that worked the Toronto club circuit hard throughout the 1980s before fading into obscurity. Their small catalogue (two EPs, an LP, and a live album) turns up around used shops in the GTA with fair frequency, and there are a few fond remembrances online from author/activist Cory Doctorow and the wonderful ‘80s indie blog Wilfully Obscure (which I was delighted to learn is still in business).
Parts are a very vibey band—meandering tempos, no hooks to speak of, plenty of glutenous bass to sway dreamily to. They’re not quite goth though—vocalist Steve Cowal is both melancholy and a poet, but seems like he would just look confused if you told him most people start bands to get laid. As Doctorow notes, most of Parts’ songs feel less like verse/chorus/verse/chorus affairs and more like a series of movements. It’s most notable on side-closers “Satellite” and “Body Sends Us,” which have jammy structures that give modest guitarist David Currie (not the former Ottawa Symphony Orchestra conductor, which, I know, you were thinking) a chance to scratch away at his instrument in the spotlight.
In retrospect, Parts Found in Sea sound like one of those transitional bands between European post-punk and the forthcoming wave of predominantly North American post-rock bands. If they’d come along a little later, they might’ve alighted on some ideas that could’ve expanded and abstracted their sound in interesting ways—but as it is, they left behind a catalogue full of pleasant surprises for aficionados of gloomy, thoughtful ‘80s alternative.

obsessed with the names in da2. carver's namesake is a man who granted his father freedom despite being the one who should have jailed him. other disciples came up with anders' name because he kept the one he had away from circle and templars and it is how it's been since then. fenris' name comes from his former master but he reclaimed it because he doesn't run away anymore. isabela adopted the name given her by a man who never took her seriously and then she became a captain isabela after she killed him. hawke is hawke because it's the way people refer to them and they're defined by people. all of their names. they tell a story

oh the fact that he was only there a couple months is making me have Feelings
on the one hand at least he wasnt there too long (i was assuming it was over years so its good he didnt suffer as long in comparison)
on the other thats. so much to happen and to process within such a short period of time, it really is like you saif about the vase shattering - he was broken so quickly
a timeline where he spends actual Years with Sam would be so interesting
their whole relationship is a constant push and pull, and the longer they'd spend with each other the more they would crave it as much as it hurts them. the thought of them trying to live without each other and be their own people is scary when all they've known for years is each other. their mind games would have settled by then, not quite healthy but they have each other figured out, for the most part, the boundaries so much clearer yet blurrier. (do you know Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? something like that.)
it would be especially interesting to explore because at the end of it all, Sam can't get too brash because he needs Dream for the revive book, and Dream, as much as he hates being a pretty thing to ogle and use, just doesn't want to be alone again.

quick damibeck thing bc i am thinking abt them and i Want To Share
theyve known each other since they were kids and were each other’s closest friends at that time and therefore ended up engaging in a lot of the same activities, and therefore both ended up learning to play music (the island they grew up on had a piano in… idk the tavern maybe or the library dont worry abt it). linebeck learned to play piano and damien, after trying out a few instruments when he had the chance (there was an island kinda nearby with a bit of a musical culture) started playing clarinet. they practiced together a lot and while damien decided to commit to really honing his skill on clarinet linebeck branched out a bit and looked into composing. since they almost always practiced together and effectively knew each other’s skill levels and preferences they worked on a piano and clarinet duet and finished writing it a bit before linebeck left, and they promised each other to practice it for when they met back up
anyways they each have half of a duet with each other and practice it frequently in the time they spent away from each other and both refused to just give up on it and kept at it even though they didnt really have a guarantee that they’d ever have a chance to play it together

but literally vernon applegate spent 3 years on the coast of a great lake (idr which one) just studying sea lampreys and how they breed and live and eat and their life cycles and learned more about them than anyone had before for his thesis so that he could figure out how to kill them. there's some post on here idr what it was about or maybe it was quoting something but it was like "how can someone become so intimately knowledgeable about something and then kill it" yeah that
