#OTD in 1649 – Siege of Drogheda ends | The first siege occurred during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, when Phelim O’Neill and the insurgents failed to take the town.
Drogheda was one of the best-fortified towns in Ireland. The main part of the town was north of the River Boyne, with a smaller district to the south. The two districts were connected by a drawbridge across the river. The town was protected by a circuit of walls four to six feet wide and twenty feet high that were punctuated by a number of guard towers. Sir Arthur Aston boasted that anyone who…

In a Letter Signed By Over 130 Parliamentarians, British MPs and Peers are Saying that Continuing Arms Business with “Terrorist, Fascist, War Criminal, Genocidal and Zionist 🐖 Isra-hell” is "Totally Unacceptable" as UK-made Arms are Being Used by the “Terrorist, Fascist, War Criminal and Genocidal Isra-helli Army” in Gaza.
The letter, coordinated by Labour MP Zarah Sultana, sites a case where a fighter jet made with UK parts was probably responsible for bombing British doctors in the Palestinian enclave.
The parliamentarians also refer to other countries, most recently Canada, who have halted exports sales to Israel over concerns over its actions in Gaza.
The letter comes after a UN Security Council resolution which called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the remainder of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Israel seemed undeterred by the resolution, as it continued its relentless bombing and military operations in the enclave with the civilian death toll continuously rising.

Interview With Ali Hamud Jibril – Somaliland, A Democratizing Country Struggling For Recognition
Ali Hamud Jibril #Somalia does not know or deliberately does not want to understand that if #Somaliland were to gain #independence, it could help Somalia address its #security #challenges, as it can't at present. The #agreement would also help on two other regional issues,

Hi.
I'm going to break my very strict format for once because I need your help. For the past 9 years, the irl human behind this blog has been involved in the effort to save a museum from incompetent and money hungry executives.
The museum is filled with precious objects, telling the story of the history of technology, and how it relates to art and society.
Many of these are objects are large, but delicate and have been in place for over 30 years.
No one within the museum's community trusts the CEO, who was appointed by a hostile former government, and prefers renting out museum spaces for business functions over educating the public.
In a few days, the museum is set to close down for renovations. Yet none of the staff or volunteers have been given any clear details about these plans. All we know is displays which have inspired generations will be torn down, likely never to be restored.
We have a petition asking the new government to step in and stop the closure:
If you could sign this, you'd be doing the human behind this blog a massive favour.

Give parliamentarians the opportunity to interact with their ambassadors to the UN and UN officials.
The joint UN-IPU Parliamentary Hearing typically attracts an audience of 200 parliamentarians from all regions of the world and from both government and opposition parties. The hearings have helped to articulate a parliamentary perspective on UN negotiated agreements. Recent hearings have taken place on the world drug problem, oceans, migration, multilateralism, education, corruption, and recovery from the Covid-induced economic crisis.
The joint Parliamentary Hearing can raise awareness of a major UN process and prepare the parliamentary community to play a role in the implementation of the final agreement. Parliamentary Hearings help garner a general sense of where parliamentarians stand on the various aspects of an issue that is high on the UN agenda while also giving parliamentarians an opportunity to interact with their ambassadors to the UN and UN officials.
