The Edge of Ambiguity - By EZ (8.5/10)

What if you want to win? Sure you're possessive and obsessive and you want to indulge in those vices, but that doesn’t work. Your victim can call the cops. They won't love you. If you want a happy ending, a real one, you have to work for it. Being close isn't enough. Ropes and collars aren't enough. This yandere wants to be your true love.

Shin is pretty. Pretty enough to get in trouble. Pretty enough to get clocked as gay, because the other boys in school don't want to admit he's pretty. They whisper that they see gay in him, while they blush.

Shin is an ordinary guy who worked his butt off to get into a very good school. He's too busy to care about his looks and being gay....he probably is gay but he can't process that. His mom and uncle are both sick. He's a brand new adult, but he already must care for his elders.

Dates?

Posturing?

School hierarchy?

Shin's life is way too real for things like that.

He doesn't notice Jihwan, the handsome rich boy with a crush on him, until it's way too late.

Shin got roped into "dating" a different rich boy. A highly abusive one. Gyujin is a slimy insecure scumbag. He offers Shin money, and Shin took that cash because he was afraid. His mom got sick. He still had school. His uncle got sick and then boom no money. Gyujin has rich parents. He even offers Shin a free apartment.

Gyujin is obsessed with Shin, but Shin is straight up not attracted to him. Shin questions his sexuality again because Gyujin is so disgusting.

So, Jihwan is in a pickle. He's prime bachelor meat. He's handsome, mega rich and reasonably smart. If Shin wasn't traumatized they'd be together already, but that's ok. Jihwan is willing to play the long game.

He learned all the yandere tricks from his father. Being obsessive seems to be a family...thing.

Jihwan waits. He gets friendly with Shin's friend, and then that friend introduces him to Shin. He doesn't barge into his life like Gyujin did.

It starts out with touches. Jihwan offers to protect Shin. To be a good friend. Gyujin actually starts stalking Shin. Shin is in need of serious help. Jihwan says they can walk home together. Sit together. Go to the bathroom together.

Shin knows Jihwan is too interested in him, but he's gay. He's young and he got caught in one bad relationship. Jihwan is nothing like Gyujin, and they're going slow.

They start out as friends.

Gyujin gets crazier.

Jihwan gets more protective and sweet.

Shin starts to blush.

We pass a boiling point. The story starts to get darker, when you don't really expect it to. This looks like a simple story about two rich boys fighting over one poor, sweet boy. You expect a fistfight. You expect Jihwan to be a slightly possessive hero, but that's it.

Gyujin follows Shin home. He breaks in. He's got a mask on. The intent is clear. Shin runs but he's very small compared to Gyujin. The unthinkable almost happens, but Jihwan arrives because...he was on the phone with Shin before the lock broke.

They talk on the phone every day.

That is what saves Shin in the end.

So what now?

Shin's nutty ex is officially willing to commit crimes to get what he wants.

Jihwan has a plan. He works with the law. He uses the adults and parents to his advantage.

He returns to school as usual.

Gyujin beats him bloody, and he doesn’t move. He bleeds and bleeds until everyone comes.

Gyujin gets expelled.

(Jihwan cuts off two of his fingers in a parking lot as well, but that's after Gyujin is out of the picture.)

Jihwan has learned from his father's mistakes. His mother is a gorgeous woman with Schizophrenia. His father is a toxic man who looks down on her while he dotes on her. He even confined her in the family home. His mother desperately wanted a divorce, because her husband was too obsessed with control, but nobody listened to her. She grew to resent her son, and the marriage she no longer wanted, while her husband treated her like a beloved zoo animal.

Jihwan wants his beloved to love him. Through time and care he gets trust. The real key to Shin's heart. After years of work Shin feels safe going to the bathroom with Jihwan supervising the door. He lets Jihwan buy security cameras for his front door.

They're slowly moving towards the sweet happily ever after his father didn't get.

"Father said you were to wed soon." Hwang Y/N, Young Master of the House of Hwang stated, hanging upside down from the branch of an ancient oak tree.

"Indeed. I have come of age after all." said Jihyo, more focused on the novel in her hands than the restless figure on the tree.

"Any boys who've caught your eye?" Y/N asked with a bitter tone, for she has admired the young Lady Park for a while now.

"Unfortunately not." the other replied, who did not seem to catch the envy laced in her friend's voice.

"How would you wed without a groom?" Y/N pried, now standing and reaching up for a higher branch.

"Father planned to hold a masquerade tonight, said he might find a suitable man for me." the shorter girl said, closing her book with a leaf as a bookmark and looking up at the Hwang. "I forgot to tell you, you're invited."

"You really ought to have told me sooner." the short-haired girl hummed, jumping down with a small twig in her hand, which she brandished as if with a wand.

"I only just remembered it."

Back in the mansion that faced the meadow the two girls were in, their fathers were arguing.

"About your daughter, Jihwan-" the Lord of the Parks started, but was interrupted by the mentioned man.

"Yeji, or Y/N?"

"You know I always mean Y/N when I speak of your daughter."

"I simply thought this was a different case." Jihwan said calmly.

"I think you have raised her with too much freedom."

"I never knew there was such thing as too much freedom."

"Jihwan, it's not too late to teach her how to be a proper lady-"

Hwang Jihwan's voice turned sharp. "And what do you mean by proper lady, Joowon?"

"Graceful, soft-spoken, fair, obedient. The qualities a man would love in a woman!" Joowon exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air.

"First of all, my daughter is interested in no man. Secondly, yours and my definition of a proper lady must be different, as in my opinion a proper lady is an honest, humble, intelligent young woman." Jihwan defended. "And, if you haven't noticed, neither your daughter nor the other eight's daughters are very much obedient." Joowon stayed silent, knowing he had crossed the line.

"I accept that we have different ways of raising our children. I just came to tell you that your household is welcome at the masquerade at mine tonight."

"I shall alert my children." Jihwan inclined his head as an act of dismissal. Joowon nodded and walked out to call his daughter.

Night had come, and the Hwangs waited nervously for the carriage which would bring them to the Parks' dwelling.

"Hyunjin, let go of your sister's hair. Yeji, stop pulling your brother's ear." Jihwan scolded. "And Y/N dear, please tuck in your shirt."

The long awaited carriage arrived. Lord Hwang looked at his son and daughters. "You know I have let you do as you wish, but tonight I am expecting you to be on your best behavior."

They arrived just as the party started. The ballroom was filled with masked ladies and gentlemen, dancing to the merry music or else chatting. Park Joowon welcomed them, ushering Jihwan to a table where 8 other nobles sat. "Have fun." he said, before leaving the 3.

"I will look for Jihyo." Y/N announced to her siblings, before leaving them as well. She passed by a dark corridor on the second floor and was pulled into a dark room. "May I know the name of the person who wished to kidnap me?"

"It is I, you idiot." Jihyo revealed, unmasking herself.

"What are you doing outside the party?" The taller asked, finding it unusual that the other would be wandering around.

"I could ask you the same thing."

"I was looking for you."

"Well, I'm here now."

They stood in comfortable silence for a moment before Jihyo spoke. "I don't want to stay there. All of the boys were hitting on me, kissing my hand and offering drinks."

"Isn't that what your father would like for you to do here?" Y/N raised an eyebrow. Jihyo sighed, "I don't like any of them."

"What about Sir Percival of the Grants? I'm pretty sure your father would love to have him as a son in law." the young Hwang mumbled resentfully, for although Percival Grant was a handsome, charming man, behind closed doors he was rude and power-hungry, which was the personality Y/N had the misfortune to witness.

"That imbecile? Ha, no way." With these words, Y/N brightened. "Anyway, I just wanted to spend some time with you."

"What about with Mina or the others? They're here, I'm sure. I saw their fathers at a table."

"They're busy flirting."

They laughed together at the thought that as the 8 noblemen discussed marriage, their daughters had no interest in men whatsoever.

"Besides, I only want to spend time with you tonight." whispered Jihyo.

"And why is that?"

The shorter took a step forward and leaned closer, but the lights turned on and a butler of the Parks scowled at them. "Your fathers have been looking for you for the past hour."

The two girls groaned, assuring the man that they would be down in a minute. As they went down, they were unfortunately separated, Jihyo engulfed in a crowd of admirers and Y/N with a group of young ladies begging her for a dance.

Several weeks have passed since the Parks' masquerade. Y/N was incredibly joyful when Jihyo informed her that her father was not able to find a groom.

Presently the two heirs sat at the Parks' lawn, conversing about anything and everything as they haven't been able to meet due to their respective duties.

Suddenly, a maid of Jihyo's appeared. "Your Ladyship, Young Mistress, I have come from Lord Hwang and Master Park. They asked me to tell you to come over to them at the banquet hall.

So the two girls obeyed, and they met with their solemn-faced fathers.

"I will have to ask you not to meet at night." Park Joowon said shortly.

"Why not?"

"There has been word of a man in black who comes after people of us nobles. We are afraid he might come after you two." Hwang Jihwan explained, kind as always. "You will stay home, yes?"

The two nodded, albeit reluctantly.

Despite the warnings and promises to stay home, Y/N stood under Jihyo's bedroom window as they had planned.

She threw a stone at the window pane and waited patiently until the young Park exited through the back door.

Giggling silently, they ran through the small forest of trees owned by the Head of the Park house, intent on having fun until the sun rose.

The bright moon hung high when they girls decided to take a rest. And then they heard a cracking sound.

And then a man rose from the bushes, a silver dagger in hand. "Why, hello, little girls."

The nobles stood frozen for a minute, before Y/N threw a punch at the black-clad man's face and screamed, "Run!"

They raced through the night, predator and prey, no longer laughing but panting in fear.

To make matters worse, Jihyo tripped, spraining her ankle. She let out a cry of pain, unable to move.

Panicking, Y/N ripped a piece from her tattered shirt and hurriedly wrapped it around her friend's ankle as some sort of cast.

She hauled Jihyo upon her shoulders, but the mysterious man overtook them.

"Well," he rasped out, "that was fun."

He advanced menacingly, twirling the dagger in his rough hand.

Y/N had a chance to run and escape, but she refused to leave Jihyo. Instead, she stood over the latter in a protective stance.

"What do you want?" she demanded in an attempt to look intimidating.

The man laughed again. "This young lady." he said, pointing at Jihyo, who stared at him terrified.

"Then you'd have to go through me first." Y/N said with a shaky voice.

"That wouldn't be a problem." and he charged.

It was lucky that Y/N trained in martial arts, or she would've been dead by now. Gasping for breath, she pushed the man away. Amused at the way she wheezed, the man with the knife paused.

It was a mistake, for Y/N was only faking to catch him distracted. She ran at him, yelling furiously, but he only smirked and came up behind Jihyo. He held a knife up to her neck, making Y/N stop.

"One move and she dies."

"I thought you were after her? You wouldn't kill her."

"You're a noble too, are you not?"

He cut her across the body from shoulder to just below her chest, and Jihyo shrieked in pain, clutching the bleeding gash.

"HOW DARE YOU?" roared Y/N, grabbing him by the shoulders and punching him in the face repeatedly. He glared at her through the pain before thrusting his knife into her stomach, stilling her. "NO!" Jihyo screamed, crawling towards the unmoving girl, disabled by her broken ankle.

The Parks' men came on time to catch the kidnapper, arriving at the scene with an unconscious Y/N and sobbing Jihyo.

Y/N woke the next day with a stinging pain on her lower abdomen. Memories of the past night flashed through her mind, and she frantically looked around. "Calm down." came a soft voice.

Hearing the familiar sound, she ceased moving. "Are we safe?"

"Yes." confirmed Jihyo.

With those assuring words, she took in her surroundings, recognizing the white walls to be the infirmary in Jihyo's home, where she was taken to at the age of 9 when she fell off a tree on a playdate.

She noticed that she was only clad in comfortable pants, nothing on her chest but a bandage that extended to the wound on her stomach.

She noticed Jihyo, who wore the same things, averting her eyes with red cheeks.

"Come here." the shorter girl said, beckoning her to her own bed.

Y/N followed, sitting down beside Jihyo and was immediately engulfed in a hug.

She turned redder, wherever their bare skin touched felt like fire. Wherever the other's hot breath fanned tickled her. She pulled away, not because she didn't like the gesture, but because she was afraid that she would combust in flames.

She was saved from being asked why she let go by their fathers entering. Joowon strolled over to his beloved daughter, hugging her firmly but gently so he would not hurt her. Jihwan motioned for Y/N to come closer, so she slid off the bed and approached her father.

"I'm disappointed," was his first words. Y/N bowed her head in shame. "We told you not to go out at night, yet you defied us. I expected better from you." Y/N waited. "But I am also glad you're alive. I'm glad that you protected Jihyo."

"I did not protect her enough."

"She is here, and that means what you did is enough."

"Y/N." Park Joowon called. She walked unhappily towards him. "You disobeyed us."

"I broke the rules too!" exclaimed Jihyo.

"Be quiet."

But she would not be quiet. She got up and stood beside the kneeling Y/N. "If she will be punished, then I shall be punished also!"

"That is enough, Jihyo!"

She sat back down, sulking with her arms crossed. Joowon turned back to Y/N.

"You put my daughter in danger. You brought her to harm. Yet you put your own life in danger for her." He placed a hand on Y/N's shoulder. "I thank you for that. And I forgive you. All I am asking for is that you do as we ask the next time."

"That I can promise, sir."

Several months had passed, and the two had healed fairly quickly.

They sat at a table in the Hwang's library, talking in hushed voices.

"How are the marriage plans going?" Y/N asked, genuinely curious.

"Oh, Father called it off." Jihyo shrugged, turning a page in the book she was reading.

"What?! Why?"

"I thought you would be happy with the news."

"Well... I'm just surprised. But why?"

"He found one he thinks is worthy to be with me."

Y/N frowned. "Who?"

"You."

"Huh?"

Jihyo chuckled. Pushing Y/N's shoulder with her finger, she repeated it. "You."

"Me? But... I'm not a man."

"Would you want a man?"

"No."

"Neither would I."

"So..." Y/N said, unsure, scratching her head, "You like me?"

"Yes, you brave idiot." Jihyo murmured and kissed the other softly. She pulled away, looking into Y/N's eyes for a hint of a reaction.

Y/N's lips formed a smile. "I'm glad." And they kissed once more.

Park Jiwoo nasceu no dia 26 de novembro de 1999 em Palermo, o segundo filho de um casal coreano imigrantes na região da Sicília, na Itália. Seus pais, Seungho e Minjung, eram dedicados à família e aos negócios que lhe proporcionavam viver em uma vila de renome e pagar as melhores escolas para os dois filhos.

Recebeu o nome italiano de Giovanni e teve uma infância consideravelmente normal, apesar das regalias que lhe eram dadas. Não era tão inteligente quanto o irmão, Jihwan, mas sua personalidade cativante e seu espírito aventureiro o destacavam. Era muitas vezes reprimido por certos comportamentos considerados inadequados pelo pai, mas continuava crescendo curioso e destemido, sempre em busca de novas aventuras.

Descobriu aos poucos, através do irmão, que sua família havia mudado-se para a Itália subitamente quando a mãe estava grávida. A viagem revelara-se como uma jornada em direção à rumos obscuros, devido ao passado sombrio que os pais escondiam no país natal: estavam envolvidos em golpes explorando esquemas de fraude e corrupção.

Ainda assim, em novas terras, continuaram com os mesmos hábitos e se envolviam com segredos perigosos, comprometendo também a integridade dos jovens rapazes. Giovanni não tivera outra opção a não ser mergulhar com a família no submundo do crime. Apesar da influência sombria de sua família, encontrou maneiras de viver uma vida vibrante e independente, envolvido nos golpes ao mesmo tempo que explorava suas paixões e descobria as alegrias da vida adulta.

Quando a situação se tornou arriscada, os pais de Giovanni decidiram enviá-lo de volta à Coréia do Sul, sob a falsa premissa de cuidar de alguns negócios particulares da família no país. Apesar das atividades duvidosas da família, o rapaz era determinado a aproveitar seus dias ao máximo, desfrutando dos luxos que somente o dinheiro podia proporcionar. Ele considerava os golpes e os empréstimos como uma maneira de garantir seu próprio conforto e esplendor, sem se deixar envolver nas complexidades morais.

Escolheu morar em um condomínio luxuoso em Gangnam, que lhe traria segurança e prestígio. Trabalhava na surdina como agiota, em nome do pai, fornecendo empréstimos a pessoas em dificuldades financeiras. Aos finais de semana, atuava como dungeon master na Erostic, mergulhando na vida noturna que tanto apreciava. Sua natureza despreocupada e amor pela diversão o faziam parecer destemido diante de qualquer desafio. Enquanto continuava suas tarefas, ele também encontrava tempo para usufruir dos prazeres da vida, mantendo sua atitude alegre e despreocupada.

Park Jiho (Jun Ji-hyun)

It should come as no surprise to anyone who know the family that the eldest daughter would be just like her father: intelligent, business-savvy, cutthroat. And yet, when Jiho was named COO of the Park Enterprise, questions about her competency were raised, but time and time again, she squashed any doubts about her like a bug with her five inch heels. She’s been credited a lot for the recent successes of the Park Enterprise, and anyone who works for her knows she runs a tight ship. Her marriage to Captain Shin Suhyeok and the birth of her twins have made her quite an interest to the general public, but very little is know about Jiho as she keeps her private life, well, private. She’s ruthless, when she wants to be, and is perhaps the least forgiving out of all the Park children.

Park Jiseok (Ahn Bo-hyun)

Perhaps one of the more famous of the Park children, and sometimes not for the right reasons. His party boy reputation definitely precedes him, and it seems he has no care whatsoever what that entails. Jiseok has been named one of South Korea’s most eligible bachelor, but if the tabloids are any indication of his dating life, he doesn’t exactly have the makings of a reliable boyfriend. But he’s charming, and has a way with words, and he owns the most raved about members-only night club in the city, Neverland. Fitting for a boy who does not seem to want to grow up. While it may have come as a surprise to some that the Parks’ eldest son did not follow his father’s shiny footsteps, Jiseok has never had any interest in the family business, and he looks quite content with running his club, and jet-setting around the world.

Park Jitae (Kim Jae Young)

A sharp contrast to most of his siblings (except, perhaps, Jiseok), it seems Jitae has no interest in the family business, or any other kind of business for that matter. Despite being a business major in one of the most prestigious universities in Seoul, his interest is seemingly limited to five-star restaurants, expensive bottles of wines, and of course, his impressive vintage car collection. But he’s definitely the easiest Park to get along with, as long as you don’t piss him off. His time abroad in exclusive boarding schools has gained him some friends with equally impressive last names, but unlike most of them, Jitae is content with being away from the public eye. He probably should have a record in a precinct or two, but he’s always had daddy’s money and lawyers to help him make sure nothing ever tarnishes his reputation.

Park Jihwan (Joshua Hong)

A modern contrarian, a disapproving frown is almost always present on Park Jihwan’s face. Don’t say anything stupid in his presence, for he’ll definitely call you out on it, and then lecture you some. He loves being the smartest person in the room, and loves making people feel uneasy in his company. With his looks, however, he can easily be charming when he wants to be, but he rarely wants to be. Older twin brother to Jin-ah, there’s always been a certain closeness to the two of them that he doesn’t have with his other siblings, but who can blame him? His two older brothers are idiots with no ambition, and he puts his eldest sister on a pedestal. He’s cunning, definitely, and he’s not above using what he has to get what he wants.

Park Jin-ah (Kim Doyeon)

She became a household name at 11, when she first won her gold medal at an international figure skating competition, carrying with her the flag of her country. Jin-ah then became a force in the figure skating world, winning one grand title after another, and with every win, her popularity grew. With her show-stopping routines and off-the-rink fashion choices, the public was quick to take an interest in the youngest Park heiress, and she easily became the favorite of a lot of brands for whatever she was seen buying, so would a lot of people. No one exactly knows if Jin-ah loves the limelight when outside of the rink (she does) for she’s always seen with her trademark ‘cold expression’, but she’s a darling in the way she welcomes the attention of the press, and she’s surprisingly easy to get along with, too. Or so would others think.
