I absolutely loved Glenn’s tumble down from the echelons of coolness in this episode bc I feel like it reflects a lot of what people have been saying, that Glenn’s whole Cool Guy persona is put on bc that’s what people expect, and people don’t really question you when you’re behaving in the way they expect

Like it took 23 episodes for the other dads to notice that Glenn never talked about his wife bc he created this persona who you can’t imagine you can have deep conversations with. He hid behind this character he created, which of course is still rooted in him and his personality, because it’s easier to play a role than it is to allow yourself to be vulnerable after you’ve been hurt.

But now that he’s back with Morgan (even if it’s a slightly different Morgan, and is that weird? I think it’s kind of weird) he doesn’t need to hide as much, so while he’s still ultimately the same person, it doesn’t matter as much if he stumbles over a joke or completely whiffs it because he doesn’t have that same fear of vulnerability, because he knows that Morgan knows that he’s kind of weird and kind of passionate in an off-kilter way and she loves him for that

And he still has his Cool Guy persona but it’s more clearly a performance and she sees what he’s saying with it, and she loves him whether he’s shredding a solo or stumbling over a Cool Guy line

More about AU under the cut:

This au is something I've been cooking for about a week now. It sets the season two teens in a loose plot of a movie/album called Vide Noir by Lord Huron (which is a total banger- totally recommend checking it out)

The plot follows Lincoln on an Odyssey-type journey through space and time to find Scary, who has run off to a faraway place to gain the power necessary to defeat the Doodler and its anchors. He soon hears tales of Willy Stampler's association with her, and journeys to more dangerous paths in order to try to save her from him and his perilous form of Daddy Magic or "Papa Magie."

Potential Story Ideas for a Buddy Daddies S2 (Daughter Daddies)

- Kazuki and Rei having to figure out how they fit into each others lives now that Miri is more independent and doesn’t need as much watch and care.

- Kazuki and Rei figure out how to tell Miri the truth about her past.

- Miri meeting her birth family (her grandparents).

- Miri learning how to deal with what actually happened to her birth parents and learning how to reconceptualize her papas and Kyutaro that she knows now with the ones that she learns about in the past.

- Shigeki or the Organization causing trouble for them.

- Visits from other friends of the family like Kyutaro, Karin, and Miss Anna (you know she stays in contact).

- Kazuki running into Carol and Dorothy again in Okinawa.

- Miri’s life at school: her friends, hobbies, clubs, having a crush, etc.

- Kazuki and Rei dealing with Miri having a crush.

- Miri having issues with their over protection.

- Miri bringing home a stray cat and Kazuki going, “Oh boy, not this talk again.”

- Except this time, both Miri and Rei team up against Kazuki so they get to keep the cat.

- Miri learning how to be responsible for their pet cat.

Buddy Daddies ending the series with a ten year time skip was such a smart idea because there is so much more potential for a second season, if they were to ever do one, than if they had left the series with Miri as a toddler, imo. There would have still been material there, but I feel certain elements would have gotten stale fairly quickly.

I got thinking that the most honest and raw details about Ed and Stede's past are revealed in Stede's fever-dream and Badminton hallucination and Ed's coma, when they're confronted by their own subconsciousnesseseses (too many esesesss didn't know when to stop).

I had a pick over some of Ed's dialogue from the Gravy Basket the other day, which was barely even scraping the surface, including his expectation of violence when he's vulnerable, anticipation of hurt/cruelty in a domestic sphere and from a caretaker, desperate need for validation and approval and more.

While rewatching episode 1-4 today, it hit me how much Stede's demonstrate his belief that:

he was and remains nothing more than a disappointment to everyone around him, fit for scorn and derision (covering the parent, spouse and child for his fever dream)

no one would care if he was hurt ("Yeah, congrats")

he was insufficient ("you are such a disappointment")

he was a coward/weak ("He was scared of geese, for god's sake," say the man who shows up holding the goose he forced his son to watch him kill)

his choices, thoughts and fears would be laughed at (All of the above + Nigel)

no one cares about his physical well-being (Standing over him, taunting and laughing while he's in pain)

he was a terrible father by choosing to leave ("They'll never see papa again")

his children would hate him and wouldn't care if he was dead ("scoundrels spare no one")

Messy, emotionally-repressive autistic lad hasn't had anywhere to let out his distress for a long time, because he's never felt safe to do it. Mary says she knew he was unhappy and thought she heard him crying alone and, in a flat monotone, he denied it and said the crying was the wind.

He was conditioned to believe anything he said would be shot down. He wasn't allowed to express opinions and thoughts and his father made damn sure if he did have any, they were scoffed at and ridiculed, whether it was Stede's belief he was fortunate to have comfort and wealth or derision about his belief that he could marry for love. Mary's anger at his ship plan comes in there too, even if her reaction is warranted - he still sees a rejection of him, his ideas and the things he cares about.

It says it all that the only time he really does lose his temper in S1 (not including the meltdowns over things not going to plan) is when Jack is deliberately smashing all his buttons, treating him like his peers and dad used to and then, to rub it in extra hard, pissing on his shoes.

Stede tried to do what he normally did in stressful situations: he was going to go back to the ship so no one would see anything, because Conceal Don't Feel is that man's watchword. He bottles so finely he has an entire wine cellar of Trauma.

Ed catches him before he can leave and Stede's all out of control of his emotions and lets opinions fly and next thing he knows, Karl is dead, the crew are upset and Ed is leaving with Jack. So he learns Do Not Show The Emotions Again and boy, how that spectacularly backfires.

And on that note, watching S2, ohhhhhh there's an eruption coming at some point. He has been pushing it all down, shaking the bottles and stacking them. We've had his flashbacks again. We've had him kill for the first time. We've had him almost lose the love of his life multiple times. He's not dealt with any of that and a storm is a-coming now there's nothing to distract him from it.

Also, in case there's any doubts that his trauma isn't lurking to sneak back up and bite him, look at the man he chose to spend time with after Ed left him when he did something regarded as "man's work": an older man in a bloody leather apron just like his father in the flashbacks.

"You like me for me," he says to that guy, the one who has been reassuring him and validating him and telling him how good and worthwhile he is all day.

IWTV S2 - Pix11 clip makes me so sad for Claudia

As a New Yorker, I caught second-hand embarrassment watching the latest clip promoting Game of Thrones Ann [sic] Rice's Interview with a [sic] Vampire. 😭 But Jacob did his thing, as usual! 👏

Anyways, the clip itself was VERY interesting, from what I could tell with the audio + accents + French + lack of subtitles.

Sweet precious baby Louis, always the optimist in denial that things were getting better, not progressively worse. Louis of all people should know a thing or two about scar-tissue: some wounds only heal on the surface, but the trauma & PTSD can last forever.

I love how while Louis' waxing poetic about them "healing," Claudia's counting change (a la Bricktop 2.0--Louis "letting a woman count his money"); visibly holding back her frustration with their reality.

They had to pickpocket!? 😨 Louis! Don't stash Lestat's useless arse in a dump before making sure the alimony & child support checks get cleared! Like, I can understand them losing all their NOLA luggage while running from bombs & revenants in WWII Europe, but what happened to all Les' Parisian bank accounts!? You know how LOADED that guy is?! Louis, you really let your man take care of all the finances like that!? 💀

Jfc, Lou, The First Wives Club ain't teach you NOTHIN. 😒

Lemme calm down.

Now here's where the clip lost me; I couldn't understand a word he was saying in French--same, Claudia. 😅

But this bit right here really gets to the heart of the matter: "Truth and reconciliation;" them looking for the truth about vampiric origins & history (and the truth about Lestat's past).

Then we get this remark from Claudia:

I couldn't tell if this meant that A) Claudia was correcting Louis' French (Truth versus Trust, and her going "What?" cuz he got the translation wrong); or if B) Louis was correcting hers (her going "What?" cuz she still doesn't know any French). And if so, that got me wondering--Claudia lived with Loustat for 20+ years--how could she NOT know any French by then? 🤨

Like, I don't mean just through casual exposure/immersion; I mean cuz we learn in TVL that vampires are (preter)natural mimics. Lestat never learned how to play violin or even how to read or speak English. He picked it all up passively with the Dark Gift; a vampire who (barely) passed as human by mimicking them.

Which makes me NERVOUS for Claudia, if her powers are so dang low that she doesn't speak French by now. 😰

As for Louis, I had to laugh here; him calling French the "mother-tongue." Like, book!Louis was the same way about going to Paris--he wasn't born in America; he was a settler/colonist from France who got rich off of his Louisiana purchases in slave labor & plantations. Going to Paris really was going back to the motherland for him, and Louis was APPALLED when the Theatre mocked him for his French having an accent.

But French is clearly not AMC!Louis' native language (the DPDLs spoke English at home, NOT French--not even when Monsieur Bouillabaisse de Lioncourt came to dinner). And we also know from the OG pilot script that Louis knew (at least some) Haitian Creole, too, when he'd chat with Oncle Vervain Mayfair (GOD I wish they'd kept all that in!). French is more what bougie Creoles would speak to be cultured & educated & show off; not to converse with regularly.

If anything, French is more Louis & Claudia's father-tongue; from Lou's French White great-great grandfather; to the MIA Papa DPDL we never see; to Claudia's biological father "whose daddy gave her away to a mean old auntie" (and who left her for dead to die of PLAGUE in the books); to Absentee Father/Maker of the Year Lestat himself. What's more, French is the language of ANGER, VIOLENCE & verbal ABUSE in the de Lioncourt household/family/coven--Loustat only ever spoke it when arguing around/about Claudia.

So to have Louis talking in French to Claudia about mother-tongues is just hysterical, like boyyyyy if you don't stop--get Lestat's thumb out of your mouth for ONCE. 🤣

more tfs thoughts, really just trying to recontextualize some show lore with what seems to be established in the play

SPOILERS ahead

yada yada you know

1.) so with Henry getting his powers from his encounter in dimension X this could potentially explain the "Will has powers" angle - with a: no one expect the lab kids (that were created via Henry's ?blood?, so via the help of someone who already had powers) was actually born with them, with Henry only having powers post his encounter and acting differently, presumably possessed/influenced by the MF to some degree. which Will was as well in the UD and up to the end of s2. it's possible that with the MF particles being expelled by the end of s2 impacted him to some degree, but he still seems to have some sort of connection remaining at least, in form of the neck thing

2.) also the "vecnaing" powers coming from the MF is interesting because now there's at least the possibility that Will in s2 could have killed people that way too, with having parts of the MF literally inside him. which is honestly, really horrifying but also kind of funny. maybe it was really Really good they knocked him out and didn't find out after all. also raises the question to me if Vecna himself also/still has parts of the MF in himself (and if that's even a requirement to "vecna" someone or if that just works via letting the MF do it's thing or asking it really nicely, or maybe it just really Gave Vecna that power to do it whenever he wants who knows

3.) also with Patty being almost guaranteed to come back, i'd say she's most likely Mrs Kelley. introducing a whole new character would be a questionable move, especially with Patty's caliber. and there have been theories about Mrs Kelley being somehow connected to Vecna since July 2022. with all the Vecna victims visiting her, them trying to find literal keys in her home, and her weird clock-key necklace that's SO specific in the season about the "wizard obsessed with clocks" guy

i think the most interesting place to take that though is if she's Patty and she has been helping/watching what's been up with Vecna instead of just being out of the loop and then being filled in in s5 and swooping in to help. if she's just used in s5 to help save the day and appeal to Vecna's humanity... i don't know how well that would work, especially with Patty and their whole backstory only existing in the play. it would feel weird at best, to me at least. if they made her more morally gray and didn't use her as, essentially, a tool, there would be something interesting there. but. hm, idk if they'll go there

4.) also, the whole boat backstory is kind of cool to me in a way. the original show bible mentions spontaneous vanishings so that turning up in the canon lore now is fun to me. also seems like something that will play into s5. with s4s main tag line about "Hawkins will fall" and the whole concept about the UD becoming a stronger influence over Hakwins (via Nancy's vision, bts interviews, the show bible as well) the idea of the whole town or bigger sections of the town or buildings/people could literally being at risk of "falling into" or merging with the UD in some form is something i was expecting for for s5. which seems backed up with where the play is taking the UD lore. could also be a potential source for cool sets/visuals for s5 if we get merged areas with a desolate UD and a building that's definitely not supposed to be there, or the other way around. i feel like they could do some interesting things with that

5.) and that coming with the by-product of apparently giving Brenner dead-daddy issues is kind of funny. no comment there. the guy who calls himself Papa and is defined in the show by his freakish relationship to his "kids" having daddy issues IS just funny

6.) also, small point, but Allan Munson apparently not having a big role and being very similar to Eddie... i'm shaking my fist, will these people ever stop riding the Eddie Munson wave 😭

Do you think Papa Titan was made for the shortening? Since he contradicts the show message of the Chosen one and raises questions on why he didn’t intervene earlier

No and I think he was made for a different purpose but first why I don't think he existed for the shortening: His fingerprints show up too early. They establish King's father issues and his ancient lineage early in S2 and from all we can tell about the production of the show, the shortening at affected S2B. King was already from conquerors of a sort, of those with immense power and importance was already being placed on whoever raised him. Admittedly, this is all kind of normal for the hammering home of the found family over adopted one that happens eventually... poorly since King returns because his life was at risk, just like Hunter abandoning Belos. Which also in fact means he never actually rejects his heritage over found family which I'm actually fine with. Let kids have two families, not that King ever gets that.

The second, potentially more damning, thing though is actually The Collector. We know for a fact that the Collector was not actually planned to show up this early. Dana has gone on record to say that he was an idea that they liked and then when the news of the shortening came down, they decided to cram him in because, well, they liked it. The needs of what had to be changed about him though for that cramming to happen though is probably why The Collector is so different from his dream appearance in Knock Knock Knocking. They couldn't build him how they wanted and so went more Bill Cypher with him, or they had to hammer out an actual character for him rather than keep him nebulous which is similar to what happened with Alador when he finally actually had to show up and the incongruities there.

Why does all of this matter though? Well, it has to do with the fact that the second The Collector was introduced, with only three specials left, I turned white as a sheet. The Collector was entire SERIES, multiple seasons, levels of power above literally anything in the show before then. The characters themselves might have been prodigies but moving a moon with a finger? They couldn't fight that. Which meant there were only a couple options for how that could go down in the end, especially with the lack of time they had. Either A: they redeem him and it never turns into a fight which is what happened or B: they pull something out of their ass to give someone power on par with the villain... Which also happened in order to defeat Titan Belos.

And I'll admit that King being a Titan had never crossed my mind for that but it syncs up well with why King was given daddy issues: He needed SOMETHING to do finally. Needed something to bring him back into the plot as the show became more plot focused and he could no longer be a mascot with a tired joke. He needed something to make him important and being the avenue for an escalation in power was what they went with.

This is why I make the claim that King's heritage is more important than himself. The fact that a Titan EXISTS has more effect on the show than literally anything King ever does. Period. His one choice that impacts anything is when he pulls the Collector out and he does it because, well, otherwise literally everyone he has ever known dies. That's nice but it's not exactly deep. He would have likely still done it pretty early in the series, WELL before he does, honestly. He just might have played at asking the Collector to be his minion as well instead of just being a little marshmallow who is willing to BLEED for this. At EIGHT YEARS OLD.

But that's the point. He is now a mcguffin who can provide powerful magic that can rival the level of threat that Dana wanted for the finale. The level of threat that she had wanted to implement eventually regardless since the Collector was already on her and the other writer's minds.

Also, you know, TOH manages to fuck up it's messaging all the time. The Coven System is inconsistent, Amity learns to care about her friends regardless of other's opinion and then abandons her friends when Luz disapproves of them, etc. etc. So even if all my conjecture is wrong and Papa Titan was changed for the finale, it's not exactly a mistake we haven't seen before. Not even a mistake we haven't seen before regarding this theme since Willow might as well be a chosen one with the level of plant magic she was just born with because she is probably at least half a decade behind the rest of the kids at school in practicing plant magic but is about as impressive as TERRA when it comes to what she can do.

And finally... Why does it matter if the shortening changed it? S3 still has lots of wasted time and no one forced Dana to make Titan Belos happen. She could have opted for a resolution that didn't require a deux machina like this. You know, maybe actually had The Collector be the final boss and his redemption as him turn on Belos and get rid of him properly this time. It was still the writer's choices that led to requiring Papa Titan to bless Luz like this and nothing is going to change that.

Ok so I finally watched the whole of v2, not just scrubbing through and I’ve calmed down a bit but I’m still disappointed in a lot of areas that reach beyond Will and Mike that “straight boy” he loves.

I cried like a literal infant at that van scene because I felt so fucking bad for Will. I cried again when Papa was trying to stop El from leaving, and again when Will and Jon spoke for 5 seconds about being brothers, and again when Hopper and El reunited. (I take issue with queer pain and I have daddy issues ig)

The painting was a huge let down, overhyped, and it’s super obvious that whatever Will was painting in the opening sequence is NOT what ended up in vol 2. I’m not sure why, but they claim to be SO detail oriented and s4 was sloppy at best with the details (like the birthday gaff, the fact that no one considered a giant one way sign pointing into a closet may mislead people, etc.)

But…in terms of Byler. I honestly feel like they kept the door “open 3 inches” and it’s kind of a cop out. I said in a previous post that worst case scenario was an ambiguous ending. And while it wasn’t wholly ambiguous, there were still Byler crumbs and Melvin felt forced and it just seems…weird? Season 3 and 4 Melvin are just odd overall. Like pick a lane, Duffers. Are Mike and El head over heels or forcing it? At this point it seems like Mike has just been a confusing asshole with no consequences or explanation for two entire seasons. How he treats El AND Will is unfair and his character is practically irredeemable IMO. It’s gonna take a miracle for me to ever care about his dumbass again. I hope Will moves on quick, fast, and in a hurry. Also, Will sort of shot himself in the foot. He’s selfless to a fault and I was hoping he would be a bit more forceful.

They could have just left out that cringey and offensive love confession and I would have felt a bit more satisfied with the season overall. And to have Will coax it out of Mike added to the weirdness that Melvin has become. Like what?? It was 100x less interesting than the shed scene in s2. Like, who tf wrote that? Why must Melvin be so forced upon us but also so distant and shallow feeling? I truly don’t get it. Lumax got a decent season, considering.

Overall the episodes were decent. I don’t like that Vecna’s story was told mainly through exposition because it’s lazy. The action was fine and all but they overhyped a LOT, including Will’s storyline, the death count, and Mike’s character development. I just feel…exhausted. I don’t want to think about this show again until s5 drops. This is the El show now and I just need to accept that Mike is only her accessory.

I will hold a tiny shred of Byler hope but I’m going to have to shift my focus away from it after mourning that brutally butchered plot line. They are stringing us along while simultaneously ruining multiple characters that were once nuanced and adorable. Fuck, this sucks.

hi francis!! i finally caved and got a gagaoolala subscription so i could support papa and daddy s2, so now that i'm here i wanna make the most of it! what are your must-see's on gaga?

Oh, my favorites on Gaga? SO MANY.

My Ride is a must. It's so darling and soft and just... absolutely glorious. Soft boys fall in love with lots of softness but with an adult twist, actual conflict and a pointless het couple in the background and a secondary pairing that was... okay. HIGHLY recommend.

My Esports Genius Brother is a censored BL out of China but it's very lightly censored and A+, tbh. I enjoyed it. Slightly surreal, a little bit fantasy, strange and odd but great.

The Lost Ring is an O2 short they made! Vietnamese BL in it's most basic elements. I love it. Obviously.

Innocent is strange and sweet and surreal and it does deal with mental illness and childhood abuse but mostly in a very soft and loving if not entirely realistic way. I adore this show but it's not for everyone.

Private Lessons is a Strongberry short that I love and it's on there, teacher and student in university and just... very, very good. Also by Strongberry, Long Time No See if you haven't seen the OG mafia BL movie!

Red Balloon is a great little show, serious but also sweet.

Takara-Kun and Amagi-Kun just started on there and I might be in love with this little thing?

I recommend Something Crunchy Crunchy just because it is the single most surreal and strange thing you'll ever see but, I mean, it's literally anthropomorphized candy bars singing and being gay... if... candy bars can even be gay?

I mean, they have My Beautiful Man and Mr Unlucky and a lot of good ones... I love La Cuisine but it's very slow. My enjoyment of Unforgotten Night is not because it's good...

Uh.

Well, that's a list at least!
