PadMay is an annual event in celebration of our beloved former queen and senator of Naboo, Padmé Naberrie Amidala. There are thirty one prompts, one for each day in the month of May.
You may answer as many, or as few, as you like and there is no specific format. The prompts are jumping-off points and may be considered in universe or meta. Answers may take the form of essay, discussion, fiction, artwork, bulleted lists, gifsets, vids, vlogs, comics, whatever! Create something new, promote something you’ve previously made, or share a favorite work of someone else’s (with proper credit! Share their post if possible). It is also fine to answer prompts on a different day than that which corresponds with the number (if you miss it, or it is simply easier for you). There is no right or wrong way to participate! The purpose of PadMay is to celebrate Star Wars and Padmé, not create work or drama.

i love that obi wan tells leia she reminds him of padmé bc she’s fearless and stubborn and that she was a leader not the only memory of padmé being beautiful kind but sad (though i hope we get an explanation for that in the series) it has always frustrated me that’s what padmé’s legacy was reduced to yes she was beautiful and she was kind and at the end she was heart broken but she was also the teenage queen of a planet fighting back against a corporate invasion! a senator who helped found the rebellion!

Cy's 2023 Fic Replay - Track 9
I am very sorry, but this is continuing ...
track 9: Let's Hurt Tonight - One Republic
I'm pretty sure I found this song just this year through Spotify and from the moment I did it went to the top of the playlist for the modern obidala 'padme lives' AU that I've been working on off and on for the past year.

This fic has lived in my head for almost as long as Unintended has. I mean honestly, are you really an obidala author if you don't have at least one 'padme lives' au swimming around in your head? And while I adore all the gentle domestic 'obidala helping each other heal after Anakin' AUs, this is not that. After watching OWK, I really really wanted to just let them swim around in that mutual self-hatred for awhile. So Wires is where I get to do that
Which is probably why this song fits so well. Because really could anything say more clearly "I enjoy watching two characters I care deeply about tear great gaping chunks out of each other" more than this song. Particularly this part:
I'll hit the lights and you lock the doors
Tell me all of the things that you couldn't before
Don't walk away, don't roll your eyes
They say love is pain, well darling, let's hurt tonight
I worked on it quite a bit for PadMay, and it expanded out into a non-linear character exploration of Padme and her relationship with both Anakin and Obi-Wan. And while I haven't managed to finish it, it's got some wonderfully dark and raw bits that I can't help but want to share, so indulge me:
SPOILER WARNING
“I am not testifying against Anakin. I told you that.”
“No one’s asking you to. My testimony should be enough for them to–”
“To what? Lock him up? Let him rot in prison? You know what things would be like for him in there. Is that really what you want?”
“He’s dangerous, Padme. His being in a wheelchair doesn’t change that.”
“Says the man who put him there. What are you trying to do? Finish the job?”
He jerks his head away.
Padme falls back against the bed.
“Maybe we should talk about this when you’ve gotten some sleep.”
Like that’s going to happen. “Why? I’m not going to be any less of a bitch about it then.”
“Then maybe we should talk when I’ve gotten some sleep.”
Of course. This is how all their other fights end. She says something completely unforgivable, and he…doesn’t. Either retreating or calling a truce for the kids or distracting her in other ways he finds effective, but never never actually returning fire. And she knows that control, that ability to keep himself distanced enough, detached enough to never let his emotions get the better of him, is what kept him alive for all those years undercover. But god if she doesn’t hate it.
Just once she wishes he would fight back. Just say it. All of it. Every why didn’t you and you should have and this is your fault she knows he’s been carrying around in his back pockets. She knows they’re there. She can see in his eyes, feel it in his touch. She doesn’t understand why he won’t just say it. What’s holding him back. If he would just say it, just blame her, accuse her, something, anything, then she could at least mount some kind of defense, build a case, explain herself. But if once, just once, he would fight back, beat her up a little, then maybe she could finally stop doing it to herself.
Padme stares up at the ceiling and doesn’t say anything.
Obi-Wan turns to go.
“I’ll never forgive you. If you do this, I’ll never forgive you for it.”
He stops, back still turned. “I’m not asking you to.”
No. No he’s not. He never has. As if he knows she used up all her forgiveness on Anakin ages ago, and doesn’t have any left. For either of them.

How do I get a Bingo?

There's something that kind of confuses me about Padme's death, was it mainly Anakin's force choke that killed or was it just sadness? Like, let's say the force choke never happened would she still from sadness over what Anakin had become or would she be fine? Or there's no confrontation on Mustafar but Anakin is killed, would she die of a broken heart? Were there other factors that played in it as well like the heat of Mustafar and the stress of everything that happened, maybe even some kind of brief form of postpartum depression or something the medical droids missed?
It wasn't Anakin's force choke at all. I know people will gang-up and be like "nooo he killed her!" but the medical droids do say that medically she's 100% healthy, but she's still dying of unknown causes.
Padme died of a broken heart. And even if there was no confrontation on Mustafar, but she learned Anakin was killed, she would have still died of a broken heart. He was everything for her and she couldn't go on without him. When Obi-Wan came back to the ship but Anakin didn't, I think Padme assumed Anakin was dead, that Obi-Wan killed him as he said he would. So she lost her soulmate. Padme was constantly worrying about losing Anakin, especially in ROTS, so kinda seeing that fear materializing broke her heart completely.
You also need to take in account that her entire life got destroyed. The Republic was gone and Anakin was gone. Those are two of the biggest things that defined Padme's character. And without those, there was no Padme either.
I forgot where I talked about it, probably on a Kanan post, but I was saying how before Dave Filoni, deaths in SW served a purpose. Main characters didn't just die for shock value. And I talk about how Padme's death symbolizes the end of the Republic. She was so significant to democracy and freedom, and when those things ceased to exist, the character that was the symbol of democracy and freedom also ceased to exist. Same with Vader in ROTJ. His death symbolized the end of the Empire. It was Anakin's attack that made way for the Empire to go into existence. Sure, Palpatine put the bases for the Empire and he was largely responsible for the Empire, but it was Anakin in ROTS who was basically the catalyst for the Empire coming into existence. Without Anakin on his side, Palpatine and his clone army would have failed. So when Vader dies in ROTJ it's also symbolic of the Empire's death as well.
However, for Padme personally, as a character, it was the fact that she lost Anakin that caused her death. We see her keep going after she finds out that the Republic is no more. She's willing to go on as long as Anakin is with her. But once she loses Anakin, she loses her will to live too.

Padmé straddled her husband’s waist, memorizing the contentment on his face. A stolen moment of peace.
Her fingers traced over mottled skin, and thick scar tissue that covered much of his body. She leaned over him, peppering small kisses along his jaw and neck, smiling against his skin when he would make a noise from her teeth scraping a rare spot where he still had feeling. Every advancement in technology developed under her Imperial rule would go, first, to repairing what used to be smooth, sun-kissed skin beneath her hands.
A small ask from an Empress who’d nearly lost everything.
