Russian Cup, stage 4
I’ll try to mention some of the lesser known skaters this time. Because they are all so good but often this is not enough because this is Russia: there are countless talented skaters and only a very limited number of international spots. (I came to the conclussion that - especially in juniors - the key is not to get attached too much to one skater, one team and just appreciate everything we get to see)
Pairs
Sometimes I really can’t wrap my mind around it. They are all sooo good. First warm-up group and they are so good, second group and they are great, third group world class.
Let me scream VIKTORIA VASILIEVA / Nikita Volodin. She was a singles skater a year ago. I saw her two years ago at JGP with my own eyes. And now? She is a pair skater. That was such an awesome debut for this new pair. I am in awe. And especially their Mickmacks FP is great.
I also liked Maria Alchova/Sergei Bezborodko and their Peal Harbour FP. (Poor them and the death spiral though)
Karina Akopova/Nikita Rakhmanin they are speeeed. (Limelight SP and based on my very limited knowledge of cyrilic alphabet a mix of P. I. Tchaikovsky’s music with A. Bocelli’s Fall on me???) Anyway they are so quick on the ice.
I love every Memoirs of a Geisha program and of course I loved Jasmina Kadyrova/Ivan Balchenko and their SP.
I love Boikova/Kozlovskii so so so much. And I love their SP, I’m so happy that we finally saw them. Their SP is so light, tender, classical. Their FP was good but not just that magically great as we maybe got too much used to it. It couldn’t be easy for them skating just hours after their coach’s husband passed away on top of everything else. (I absolutely didn’t know but they formed a pair in 2015 having skated only in singles prior to that.)
youtube
I have to admit I have a complicated relationship with Tarasova/Morozov. Though I liked their Adagio FP and after rewatching Bolero many times, yeah, there’s in fact nothing wrong with this program... They are just not my favourite skaters but I can still see why they are one of the best in the world. If I associate B/K with lightness, T/M are definitely power.
Mishina/Galliamov are back. Well, they were not away, it was just one bad comp and it happened to be Russian nationals which was so unfortunate. They were oozing confidence this time. They were flawless, I loved the low death spiral and the whole Esmeralda SP and the dance lifts and creative choreo sequence in their Bohemian Rhapsody FP.
youtube
Ice Dance, Sr.
I really appreciate that the organizers give the opportunity to foreign skaters training in Russia to unofficially take part in the Russian Cup series. You won’t find them on the results pages, but I think for them the most important thing is that they can skate in whatever form it is...
This time, it was Hungarians Anna Yanovskaya/Adam Lukacs skating to Grease RD and Hymne l’amour FD. (I love these combinations of programs: one more upbeat one more classical).
If I’m counting right it’s at least fifth Grease I’ve seen this (or last) season: Guignard/Fabbri, Shpilevaya/Smirnov, Pavlenina/Aleksanian and the queen and the king of Grease Smart/Diaz - I enjoy watching and comparing these programs, so there’s never too much Singing in the rain, Too darn hot... etc. ;) )
If you want to see passion and also synchronized hydroblades watch Vlada Pavlenina/Aleksandr Aleksanian La sal de la terra FD.
I like L’Opera Rock FD of Svetlana Lizunova/Alexander Vakhnov.
And then Julia Tulseva/Anatolii Belovodchenko. Cabaret / Umbrella. I simply love these programs, Cabaret, Burlesque... And their FD was even better, their speed, the interpretation, the curve lifts, the jazzy feel...
And I’m really happy that Anastasia Skoptsova/Kirill Aleshin won this stage and that they kept their Bonnie & Clyde RD.
Ice Dance, Jr.
Let’s take a look at some junior ice dancers! Of course Arina Ushakova/Maxim Nekrasov (I like their Chicago RD) and Vasilisa Kaganovskaya/Valerii Angelopol (here I like their FD) were the best but there were so many great performances:
Polina Kocherigina/Evgenii Artyushchenko - Mala Luna FD.
Polina Usova/Egor Goncharov - Anything goes RD / Sigur Ros FD. Especially the FD was such a mature performance.
Ksenia Davidova/Michail Antonov - Singing in the rain RD I liked the choreography, the whole performance aaand the speed.
Daria Bukovschikova/Alexander Vdovin - New York, New York RD A relaxing “feel-good” program (a style I really like)
Taisia Linchevskaya/Timur Baklanov-Smirnov - Cabaret RD The stylization, the poses, the carriage on the ice...
Alexandra Shabalina/Maxim Kiryukhin - Romeo and Juliet FD
And now let me present three teams I absolutely fell in love with:
Alina Abdulina/Maxim Nuralyev - Fifty checks / Mindfields I love the variations of the famous P/C lift in the RD. And the more pop/rock feel of the FD and synchronized cartwheels?!!  (I called it “P/C lift” but let’s not be like twitter moral police saying that anyone else doing this lift is a copycat; this lift was there long before P/C, eg. Belbin/Agosto did it...)
Sofia Kachushkina/Oleg Muratov - A chorus line / Walking castle?? I nicknamed them Team Red according to their RD costumes. The RD is such a fun and energetic performance, they even use the lyrics - saying steps, walk, ministeps and they do on the ice. And their FD is totally different, very balletic, like a fairy tale.
youtube
Alisa Ovsyankina/Matvei Samokhin - Aladdin / Dance of the Sugar plum fairy
They are babies and these programs are so fitting for them. The FD is from Nutcracker and I squealed. Yes, yes, yes, yes, that’s a perfromace, that’s so cute and just lovely to watch.

A couple of tried and true home remedy hacks for sick kids. 🤢If your child has a stomach flu and can hold nothing down: Make two cups of water, one slightly sweet and another one slightly salted, like a tear drop taste. Alternate a teaspoon each under the tongue, every 5 minutes. It works like an i.v. and it's very effective. I know that this method is tedious, but I prefer it over a trip to the doctor's office and prescribed antinausa meds. And it's harmless. My friend Maya Davidova introduced me to it, it's been a life saver ever since. Thank you Maya! 😩If your kid is having body aches. You can rub vodka onto the entire body, cover them and let them sweat it out, but DON'T rub the vodka in,🤒 if your child has a fever. You can actually still apply vodka to the entire body in case of a fever, but without rubbing it in. This method works like a fever reducer. Running alcohol can be used too. Chances are, you'll have vodka on hand over the running alcohol if you're Russian 🤓. 😷Sore throat: Mix one teaspoon of baking soda and same of salt into a cup of warm water. Gargle every hour, sore throat goes away after about 5 times. These methods are what I use, because I'm not a fan of medicine💊 being my first answer. I think they're worth sharing. A lot of times the simplest solutions are right at our fingertips, but we just forget to use them. 📌Here's to health! #sick #remedies #quick #hacks #homeremedies #simple #nomeds #kids #parents #households #tips #backtohealth #ill #flu #influenza #stomachflu https://www.instagram.com/p/BuHlJ0wAMMG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hhw34qxx3ex1

Lasso Regression Analysis in SAS
This study focuses on the impact of motivations, perceptions and attitudes of agricultural households in five EU NMS – Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovenia – on their market participation. The conceptual framework is based on Kostov and Lingard (2004), suggesting that objective factors influence market behaviour through their subjective evaluations. Within this approach the subjective evaluation of the status quo, the nature of the alternatives, and the subjective utility contributions of the attitudes towards agricultural concept, measured by orientation (subsistence or commercial), affect the degree of market participation. This is a pre-refereed version Kostov, P. and S. Davidova (2012) A Quantile Regression Analysis of the Effect of Farmers’ Attitudes and Perceptions on Market Participation, Journal of Agricultural Economics, http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1477- 9552.2012.00366.x The substantively different definitive version is available at wileyonlinelibrary.com 24 The methodology applied is a quantile regression method coupled with the Bayesian adaptive lasso to simultaneously select important covariates and estimate the corresponding quantile regression models. It provides more detailed insights that can allow policy makers to better target those semi-subsistence and semi-commercial farmers who would like to integrate further into the output markets, insights that could not be achieved by the mean regression methods prevailing in most previous research. The analytical results are meaningful in two aspects. First, the actual structure of the variables included in the model varies across different quantiles. Second, the modelling strategy applied allows for heterogeneous impact, i.e. even when some variables affect the outcome at different quantiles, their impact is allowed to vary and be different for different types of farmers. The results support the assumption about the heterogeneity of farm households, and the impact of their subjective motivations, attitudes and evaluations of future prospects on their marketing behaviour. Out of 34 variables retained by the model only three are important to all quantiles (17 quantiles altogether). The remaining variables affect some quantiles but not others. What is particularly interesting is that some clustering of effects has emerged since most of the variables tend to affect mainly either the lower or the upper quantiles, i.e. either only the semi-subsistence and semi-commercial farmers or the commercial ones, but not both groups. This indicates that the marginal effects of some subjective factors on farmers’ orientation, subsistence or commercial in the Kostov and Lingard (2004) sense, are large for farmers with a specific orientation but not for farmers with a different one. Thus, some subjective factors affect the market integration of semi-subsistence and semi-commercial farmers but not that of the commercialised ones and vice versa. This suggests that policy measures have to be more targeted and that blanket measures, if effective at all, may not be effective for the overall policy target group. The results indicate that what may help some semi-subsistence farmers to integrate into the market is not the traditional agricultural support and/or support similar to measure 141 in the EU Rural Development Regulations for 2007-2013 for semi-subsistence farmers in the NMS undergoing restructuring: rather, it is rural development and job creation in rural areas. The latter will not only increase the living standards of these farmers but will release resources for This is a pre-refereed version Kostov, P. and S. Davidova (2012) A Quantile Regression Analysis of the Effect of Farmers’ Attitudes and Perceptions on Market Participation, Journal of Agricultural Economics, http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1477- 9552.2012.00366.x The substantively different definitive version is available at wileyonlinelibrary.com 25 more efficient uses in the commercial sector since several of the farmers feel locked in agriculture due to the perception that other options are unavailable .
The results also suggest an important role for the advisory services in facilitating the market integration of farmers selling between 20 and 60% of their output. In the current (2007-2013) EU rural development policy there is support for advisory services amounting to 80% of the eligible cost per service and capped at 1,500 Euro. However, the main focus is on advice on how to keep the land in good agri-environmental conditions (GAEC) and meet the occupational and safety standards, thus the emphasis is on the conditions necessary to receive direct payments from CAP Pillar 1, which is not very beneficial for small and not well market integrated farmers (Council Regulation 1698/2005). In the proposal for the new regulations post-2013, the focus is widened with actions necessary to mitigate climate change and maintain biodiversity – but again nothing specific for the millions of semi-subsistence farmers. There is a general provision that “advice may also cover issues linked to the economic, agricultural and environmental performance of the holding or enterprise” (COM(2011) 627 final/2:13), thus advice on market integration is not precluded but at the same time is not targeted either. The results also show the need for more targeted training and advice to meet EU food safety and quality standards. In many cases these standards require investment. This links to the other policy area that featured prominently in the results – access to credit. It has been felt as a constraint by the lower end of market integrated farmers who want to start up an off-farm business, thus to diversify or to add value to their agricultural products. There are new financial engineering instruments; for example, a rural credit guarantee scheme. However, experience in the use of such instruments is still rather limited (CSIL, Centre for Industrial Studies, 2010). Recently, there has been a more extensive policy debate in Europe concerning the special policy needs of semi-subsistence and small farmers (ENRD, 2010). In the Commission proposals for the new regulations there is substantial detail concerning a simplified scheme for direct payments to small farmers. However, the results here as well as several previous studies (see e.g. Davidova, 2011) argue for support for rural development (CAP Pillar 2). The measures in Pillar 2 are multi-annual and can be tuned to specific regional needs. In the Commission proposal for a Regulation for Rural Development post-2013 ‘small farmers’ constitute a ‘thematic sub-programme’ (COM(2011) 627 final/2). In principle, the Member States are allowed to give higher support rates for some activities covered by the sub- This is a pre-refereed version Kostov, P. and S. Davidova (2012) A Quantile Regression Analysis of the Effect of Farmers’ Attitudes and Perceptions on Market Participation, Journal of Agricultural Economics, http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1477- 9552.2012.00366.x The substantively different definitive version is available at wileyonlinelibrary.com 26 programmes but the probability that low market integrated farmers will be the beneficiaries of such national decisions is low since they have to compete with the remaining sub- programmes, including setting up young farmers, support to mountainous areas and support for short-supply chains. It is unlikely that the least market integrated farmers, who usually have small farms, will have a very strong and organised voice and be capable of influencing decision-making in the direction of their interests

Ab Montag gilt in fast allen Bundesländern Masken-Pflicht.

Do cíle etapy dojeli s rezervou 12 minut a vedou s náskokem 1 h 11 min 29 s.
Pro Stéphana Peterhansela a Jeana-Paula Cottreta problém začal
– při předjíždění motocyklu na kilometru 186. V prachu nezahlédli kámen, zlomili tlumič a trojúhelník zavěšení, takže museli zastavit.
– a pomohli svým týmovým kolegům.
KLASIFIKACE V 7. ETAPĚ:
Carlos Sainz (ESP)/Lucas Cruz (ESP), PEUGEOT 3008 DKR Maxi, 4 h 49 min 26 s

34. Cyril Despres (FRA)/David Castera (FRA), PEUGEOT 3008DKR Maxi, +3h 44 min 44s
KLASIFIKACE PO 7. ETAPĚ:
Carlos Sainz (ESP)/Lucas Cruz (ESP), PEUGEOT 3008 DKR Maxi, 21 h 41 min 38 s
Nasser Al Attiyah (QAT)/Matthieu Baumel (FRA), Toyota 4WD, +1 h 11 min 29 s
Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA)/J.-P. Cottret (FRA), PEUGEOT 3008DKR Maxi, +1 h 20 min 46 s
Giniel de Villiers (ZAF)/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZAF), Toyota 4WD, +1 h 20 min 54 s
Bernhard Ten Brinke (NLD)/Michel Perin (FRA), Toyota 4WD, +1 h 25 min 04 s
Jakub Przygonski (POL)/Tom Colsoul (BEL), Mini 4WD, +2 h 19 min 02 s

Peter Van Merksteijn (NED)/Maciej Marton (POL), Toyota 4WD, +4 h 23 min 35 s
Lucio Alvarez (ARG)/Robert Howie (ZAF), Toyota 4WD, +5 h 14 min 16 s
40. Cyril Despres (FRA)/David Castera (FRA), PEUGEOT 3008DKR Maxi, +44 h 52min 20 s
Bruno Famin, ředitel divize Peugeot Sport, Team Manager PEUGEOT Total
„Říkali jsme, že na tomto Dakaru se toho může ještě hodně přihodit. A dnešní etapa to potvrdila!
Zničilo to celou záď vozu: tlumiče, zavěšení, převody, spoustu věcí.
Součástí druhé části maratonské etapy, z Uyuni do Tupizy, bude druhý nejdelší měřený úsek v délce 498 km.

The film is the result of Swedish journalists travelling to the United States in the 1960s and 70s with the intention of exposing the country’s lesser-told realities. It features appearances from Angela Davis, Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton.
After the film, join fierce pussy at Julius Bar (159 West 10th St. at Waverly), the oldest gay bar in New York City, for drinks and discussion.

Just Cause
This exhibition includes the work of three artists from the international Residency Unlimited program: Maria Agureeva (Russia), Juan Sánchez (Spain), and Benjamin Brett (UK). All of their work is extremely different, but intersects along “by way of conceptual concerns and intellectual reason, paired with doing something ‘just because’—instinctual and driven by a sense of chance and play.”
Here, that conceptual concern is the balance between external politics and free will. We’re curious to see how that translates to each artist’s respective practice—Agureeva uses her own body in pieces that function as both painting and sculpture, Benjamin Brett makes conceptual paintings that combine narrative and abstraction, and Juan Sánchez uses economical materials and art historical references to comment on labor and impermanence. This should be a heady show.

Radical Conversation: Making America Great - Hettie Jones: The History of Greatness
ICP has been responding the current political crisis with a programming series that’s pretty on point. This week, they’re hosting a talk by Hettie Jones on exactly what making America “great again” really means. Jones has a long history of working through publications—she published the radical Yugen magazine from 1958 to 1962, numerous books for children of color when they were a rarity, and was a chair of the PEN Prison Writing Program. That’s a lot of experience and wisdom to share about working in the face of adversity, and boy do we need it right about now!

Vectorian New Year : HAPPY 2030 AD
Who ever knows what the hell is going on at Vector Gallery? We applaud AFC alum Whitney Kimball for her in-depth attempt at deciphering their mysterious ways. Whatever “Crown Prince of Hell” JJ Brine and his accomplices are up to, it’s usually fun. If you need a break from reality in these stressful days, this celebration of the 2030 Vectorian New Year might be just about the closest thing to experiencing an alternate universe on a Wednesday night in Manhattan.
From the event page:
Facebook has rejected the language of this event ad on numerous ocasions due to the asymmetrical relationship between SHAY culture of 2017 and the notion fo a 2030 temporality by Vectorian reckoning. Therefore Eye am left with no other choice than to state the following : all symbological designations of time and its passage, Gregorian or otherwise, are conceptual art proects purporting to account for the laws of now, then, soon, and when was that again?

Book Launch: Ah Yes Bad Things by Andrea McGinty
We’re big fans of Andrea McGinty. The artist has a rare capacity for conveying bittersweet, humorous reflections on contemporary living with economical combinations of mass-produced products. That might be a vibrator dancing endlessly around a juicer or a humidifier wrapped in workout clothes with optimistic platitudes. For anyone who’s felt alienated by the endless barrage of ever-more-unattainable “wellness” or “self-care” promised by consumer culture, her work feels like a poetic confidant to share a skeptical eye-roll.
We’re excited to see how this strategy translates to publication form. McGinty is launching her first book from local publishers Soft City, Ah Yes Bad Things. The book comprises ephemera from her smartphone: Tweets, messages, notes, and images from the camera roll. That’s an increasingly common approach to compiling artist books, but we’re guessing McGinty’s will be singularly insightful, weird, and funny.

Book Launch: Queer Threads
We haven’t had a chance to check out Queer Threads, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art’s survey of LGBTQ+ fibers artist yet. This looks like the night to do it. AMMO Books is launching a 192-page color catalog featuring the work of and interviews with 30 queer fiber artists. It’s a good mix of local, national, and international artists. It sounds like a keeper. JD Samson (queer icon behind feminist bands such as MEN and Le Tigre) will be DJing the event.

Tough
What’s this show going to look like? If Alicia Gibson’s oil painting “Nail Polishing Club” (above) is any indication, great. The event page only lists the artists and the below list of tough stuff, so we’ll have to wait until Friday to satisfy our piqued curiosity. Even the artists we’re familiar with aren’t an indication—conceptual painter Joshua Bienko’s work always seems to look different, but it’s almost always good.

Sharper Image
We love Dina Kelberman and Milton Melvin Croissant III (two of the artists in our Providence College show Geographically Indeterminate Fantasies: The Animated GIF as Place). Kelberman samples pop culture or the endless archives of the internet with often hilarious, often overwhelming ends. Croissant (yes… real, awesome name) creates insanely detailed CGI renderings of the corporate blandscape and various other digital environments. Whatever they’re showing here, it’s going to be great.

Heartbreak Hotel
Heartbreak Hotel is succinctly described as “Five hour simultaneous durational pieces with bells, whistles, and fog.” Sounds like a fun haunted house?
The show features work from some of our favorite artists in the Bushwick scene, such as FlucT’s Sigrid Lauren and video/installation artist Miles Pflanz.
Generally, I’d say five hours is more of an endurance challenge for the viewer than the performer. But this format and lineup might just keep things engaging all the way to midnight.

Thanks to Two Trees’ Space Subsidy Program (of which we’re also a beneficiary) AFC has some pretty cool neighbors. Come meet them at Art in DUMBO’s open studio crawl. It’s a lot of art to see, but it’s mostly within a block or two of 20 Jay Street (where about half of the participants are tenants). If you can’t do it all at once, come back on Sunday, when studios will also be open.

Tom Burr: New Haven
Bortolami’s ARTIST/CITY initiative famously put Eric Wesley in a Suburban Midwestern Taco Bell last year (the idea behind the project is to pair the gallery’s artists with unusual spaces outside of NYC to make new work). But the most exciting pairing might be Tom Burr’s takeover of the IKEA-owned brutalist landmark Pirelli building. Designed by Marcel Breuer, it’s one of the many modernist gems sprinkled incongruously around the small city. At present, it sits empty like a sculptural object in the parking lot of an IKEA. It’s an odd example of suburbia sort of subsuming the utopian architecture that just-barely preceded it.
Tom Burr has been creating works in response to the building (which was designed, coincidentally, in 6-foot segments; exactly the artist’s height). This should definitely be worth the Metro North ride (and like, a trip to IKEA!). It’s one of the few Bortolami ARTIST/CITY projects within the NYC metro area, so be sure not to miss it.
